It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Tadpole season in the northern hemisphere! These common toad tadpoles, Bufo bufo, are travelling in schools in a local pond, eating all the detritus they can find.

Are amphibians marsupials? Of course not-- except for marsupial frogs! Although not a true marsupial, female members of the sub-family Amphignathodontidae have an external brood pouch on their back in which they carry their eggs until they hatch as fully-developed juvenile froglets.

No. 19 Bruno's Casque-Headed Frog Nyctimantis brunoi

Found in lowland forests, marshes and scrub in Brazil.

A nocturnal generalist species feeding low down in the trees on a diverse range of invertebrates.

One of only two known species along with Greening’s Frog (Corythomantis greeningi) of venomous frog in the world. These frogs possess a series of spines projecting from the upper lip of their skull. When threatened these spines are butted against the threat, piercing through toxin glands in the frogs’ skin and into the target.

This mechanism was only discovered by Dr. Carlos Jared when collecting specimens of Greening’s frog when one headbutted his hand, causing him intense burning pain for several hours but luckily nothing further.
