Context: I temporarily cannot hear out of my right ear, but luckily my usual hearing is very sensitive and my left ear is still working as well as ever so I've mostly been able to compensate.

But I did not expect what would happen when I listened to "This Jesus Must Die" from Jesus Christ Superstar with headphones. The first 10 seconds sounded completely normal (well, "normal" for the noticeable one-sidedness I've gotten used to for the past week) but suddenly it seemed as though the vocals had disappeared - while the background music was still loud and clear. It basically went: "🎶 Good Caiaphas, the council waits for you 🎶 The Pharisees... 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶" with the vocalless music continuing for a good 20 seconds before the singing returned.

Initially I was bewildered and a little worried, wondering if my MP3 file somehow got corrupted or VLC was malfunctioning or my computer had developed some extremely weird bug. I replayed that section over and over to make sure I hadn't just imagined it.

Then I remembered my hearing issue and tried putting my headphones on backwards, so the right cuff would be on my functioning left ear.

...And suddenly the song sounded normal again, because the recording was using stereo sound to have the vocals only on the right audio channel for that portion, while the music continued from both sides.

I never noticed that detail while listening with my normal hearing (like most everyone has for Bohemian Rhapsody). Interesting.
