Do you have any tips on how you do shading ?? Your art really inspires me and I literally suck at shading lmao.

hello anon!!! im honoured i can inspire you sdfhkjh it's crazy to me that i can inspire literally anyone :,DDD <33

tbh i do all my shading purely based on vibes/what makes me happy so im not sure im a good advice person but ill show you a breakdown of how i go about shading and hopefully that might help a bit? :o i've left it below the cut because i have too much to say and it ended up being really long LOL

of course if there's anything you want more details on i'm always happy to explain, just let me know!

okay SO ill use this asmo as my example, i think there's enough to talk about here that it should be helpful hopefully

so here's my lineart and flats! i do all my flat colours in one layer because i find it easier to make everything look more cohesive when the pieces arent separated (i usually like it when the colours bleed into each other a lil), but i also just dont like the process of having to switch between layers for everything too LOL flats are unfortunately my least favourite part :,D probably because my lineart is so messy hahah

as you can see, the shading is very minimal here, just some subtle stuff in the wings/sheer parts of the fabric and some blushing on the skin, i also stole the orange under eye/liner thing from TBHK because <3

and then i clean up any messy stuff by just painting over top of everything on a new layer, i also rendered the metal at this stage because i felt like it i guess???

i dont think i did a suuper good job at rendering the metal here (because i was lazy), it looks fine but something to note about metal is that usually you want to push the highlights and the shadows a lot more, as well as the reflections because it is so shiny and smooth this is why you'll see a lot of pink and blue in the metal, to show the reflections of his hair and the sky

i would recommend using reference to get a better idea of how metal ACTUALLY works but again, i was lazy lol so that's a simple explanation based on what little i know/have observed

the jump here is a bit drastic and you might be like woah starr where'd all this come from?? but this is all in one layer-

this is how that layer looks as a normal full opacity layer, for reference:

lately i've been using hard light layers to shade! they're very versatile because unlike multiply layers i can do my shading and my highlights within one layer (do you sense a theme of me disliking having too many layers lmao)

SO this is where i have a bit more to say about shading you'll notice the prominent shading colour here is blue, this is because the main environment here (the sky) is blue. i dont know if that's how things work in the real world but it works for me LMAO i usually prefer to have my shading lean cooler purely for aesthetic reasons, i like how it looks more

you might also notice some areas where the blue is a bit brighter, this is to imitate reflected light, again because the environment is blue light tends to bounce around on things and reflect back even into the shadows so this is the effect im trying to get, i like to typically go with a brighter blue cause it gives things a sort of shinier? quality that i enjoy aesthetically, idk if its very accurate to real life tho it also helps me to give depth to the shading since shading isnt usually just one flat blob, and this is a bit of a shortcut to having more dynamic (?) looking shadows

i also want to point out my use of bright reds on the edge of the shadows:

i believe this is called diffraction- there's a real legit scientific reason why it happens but i... dont know what that is i just know it happens in real life (maybe not to this extent?) and it looks cool so i do it SFHJKSFH i usually blend it into the shadows though as opposed to into the lighter parts, i find that tends to look better

some miscellaneous things-

don't be afraid to throw random colours around!! who cares about realism, it's fun lmao

this artwork is a spoiler for asmo's bday so shhhhh but i did want to quickly show that you can also use hard light layers to create a glowy effect, i literally just painted the pink/orange directly on the shadows layer and it helped to make his eyes more glowy

of course i do go in and paint over a little after and add some layer effects but it helps to have that base there

now that you've learnt that i dont know what i'm doing, i wanted to highlight a couple of resources that have helped me! i hope they help you as well <3

there's a lot of arguing in general about how modern nattlan is amongst the fans, and i feel like some ppl are being overly forgiving of it and trying to put a woke hat on it since some people on the "its too modern" side are admittedly being racist, but most of us simply are not imo.

fonntaine has been repeatedly stated to be the most technologically advanced region, and every new invention we see in the game seems to come from there. however when saying this, we can't Ignore the fact that fonntaine's advancements are based on ancient sumerian and kanarian technology. fonntaine's advancements are aided by their proximity to the summeru desert and kannaria, they find old buried technology from long ago and reverse engineer / take inspiration from it. and even before summeru and kanaria, there was the original society of dragons that ruled this world before the humans colonized it, and that dragon society was supposed to be incredibly technologically advanced. so it's true that modern-esque technology isn't Unheard of in this world; one of the first enemies you fight in this game is a ruin guard, which is an ancient steampunk looking robot. that's the thing though: it Looks ancient and steampunk. it Looks like something out of a ruin. so it fits the aesthetic and doesn't look out of place!! that's almost the entire basis for our argument, They Aren't Bothering Aesthetically to make these things fit in anymore. we weren't complaining about naavia or chevruse's guns because they don't feel modern, or at least they have fantasy elements that make them fit in (naviia's gun being an umbrella cannon for example, its a very cool weapon but doesn't Look futuristic even though it technically is).

some people on the its too modern side Are being racist, i've seen ignorant people acting like nattlan can't have technology because "they still have tribes" as if tribes are some sort of primitive precursor to "advanced" (western) society and not just cultural. but people are taking these bigots and acting like they make up the entire argument and aren't just a minority. it's perfectly okay for nattlan to have technology, they aren't fucking cave people, but the laziness when designing said technology is getting ridiculous.

chassca's gun and the motorcycle aren't the only examples (although they're the most egregious) there's also xiilonen's turn tables.

they look too modern!! okay!! i just really don't think there's any way to make one of these fit in with the aesthetic of the game. and look at her sword, it's literally got LEDs!! like those light bars Move!

also this is a bit of an aside but xiilonen in general is kind of all over the place because they gave her roller skates and made her a DJ in her gameplay but her actual role in the story is that she's a blacksmith. there's absolutely nothing in her design or gameplay that invokes Blacksmith, and she isn't just any old blacksmith either, she's like a Magic Blacksmith. an important one. its like they needed someone to fill that role and stuck her in there despite her theming having nothing to do with it, it bothers me.

i can excuse kinnich's video game aesthetic a bit more, and i know it sounds like i may just be playing favorites since i do like him most, but from a lore standpoint it makes sense because ajjaw is one of those ancient dragons from the advanced society i mentioned previously. ajjaw's projection comes from a bracelet kinnich wears which is ancient tech that he found in some ruins, so it makes sense lore wise. also, kinnich doesnt like Play Video Games, like video games aren't An Invention in this world, he just has an aesthetic that looks pixely and video gamey, it isnt like the turntables if you get what i mean? also thematically as well him being dendro also follows a pattern, in this game nature and tech have a really cool relationship that i've never seen elsewhere. you get kind of like, natural tech if that makes sense? you can see it in nahhida and kaaveh's gameplay. nahhida's attacks look like she's stepping on a keyboard and her skill looks like she's taking a picture, meanwhile kaaveh has a little robot suitcase that fights for him, but his suitcase is Appropriately Themed so it doesn't look out of place. again lore wise it makes sense because kaaveh Also got his suitcase from an acient ruin, it isn't a modern invention its left over tech from a bygone era.

idk its just weird to me to see some ppl sucking their dicks so severely over this, its just entirely a matter of them being uncreative and not trying to appropriately theme their stuff anymore so it fits in. it would have been so easy to give the goddess a motorcycle that fits in, botw had a freaking motorcycle that looked old and ruin-y.

First of all, your shared home is cozy as fuck. Comfortable rugs and curtains you've made yourself or purchased, a lovely fire going during the night, plants set up on the windowsill, the smell of something baking, and a cushion under the window for your dog. Arthur tried to keep her as an outside dog, but then she got scared during a thunderstorm and he couldn't leave her out ...

Arthur is used to cooking for survival, cleaning game and roasting it and all that. When he watches you cook, he realizes he doesn't actually know the finer details. He'd be bashful about asking, but he'd love for you to teach him. Baking is interesting too, though he insists he'd be no good at it. Make that big man bake with you! Wipe the flour off his cheek and watch him blush red!

He always asks you nicely to mend his clothing when it gets a rip. In return he'll always keep on top of fixing up things around the house, taking care of firewood, going hunting... It's a traditional life but he doesn't mind at all if you want to do all that while he does something else. Arthur just worries about being clumsy and screwing something up - cooking and sewing is where he'd have little confidence, and he wouldn't want you to go off hunting on your own.

He bundles you up so much during the winter. Insists on it. And yes, he adores it when you wear his scarf and jacket. But when you try to do the same for him, he says he doesn't need all that. He's been up in the mountains, he can take it.

...Yeah, until he comes home with a runny nose and a cough. You keep his ass in bed for a week.

Arthur bringing you a basket full of wildflowers and herbs he thought you'd like and he's so ... flustered... probably rambles and mumbles about how you like this sort of thing.

One of many simple cute things he likes you to do: Cut his hair! Especially if you insist on washing it before cutting. Once you both were heading home after a long day and you heard something strange, like a weak cry. You went over to the barn and found a hungry, tiny little kitten. For the next several hours you and Arthur were fretting over it and trying to find something to feed it. And for the next several weeks, you each took turns cradling it in your arms and feeding it. Arthur said you ought not to name it in case it doesn’t survive the first night, but guess who started calling it Thistle right away? The kitten is so tiny in his big hands and he holds it like it’s made of porcelain. Arthur even teaches your dog to be careful around it. 

You both having lots of sleepy, lazy cuddles in the morning as the sun slowly seeps through the curtains. The dog and cat aren’t even up yet - they’re being merciful for once - so you can rest against his warm chest all you want.

now im not quite sure if you want only writing tips or writing blog tips, so ive included tips and tricks for both!

WRITING BLOG TIPS :

have a masterlist. this might seem stupid and obvious, but ive seen people with no masterlist. people are lazy, so if they cant access your writing easily, they will just click away.

have a clean theme. aesthetics are important. they are. people love clean and easy to navigate themes. again, people are lazy, so if you make it easy to click through your blog and get to your writing, youll increase the chance of people reading your stuff!

how to get your work show up in general. putting links in your fanfic might lead to your story not showing up in the search. ive also heard that a banner thats too big can cause that. even using too many tags can lead to your work not showing up. its complicated.

the first five tags. im sure youve heard abt this already but the first five tags are the tags that will actually show up! so if someone follows #bts fluff and you tag your fic with that, your fic can show up on people's dashes as a recommended post!

tag accordingly. speaking of tags, please tag accordingly! theres nothing more annoying than finding a jimin fanfic in the taehyung fanfic tag. i really discourage you from mistagging your stories. if im scrolling through the taehyung fanfic tag and find a jimin fanfic, it makes me want to not read it. just tag your fics accordingly.

reblog your fics. i mean it. seriously, reblog them as much as you want! people live in different time zones or sometimes forget abt wanting to read your stuff, so reblogging it consistently for a week or so to get it on people's dashes helps!

teasers and taglists. i recommend doing both! teasers help to get people excited for your story and taglists ensure that people will read it, or at least remember to!

dont stress abt notes. now, this is less of a tip but rather something i just really really really want to tell you! i know youve heard this before, but please do not stress about notes. tumblr fame does not exists! it doesnt matter if your writing gets 2 notes or 300 or 5k notes! i do understand how getting a lot of notes can be motivating (every fics deserve all the love in the world by the way!!) but in the end, it should not be your motiviation to write. focusing on notes will ruin writing for you. it will. the amount of notes your fic will reach has nothing to do with how good your writing is. dont let something as superficial as notes ruin the fun of writing for you. its seriously not worth it! write for you and no one else!

WRITING TIPS :

write self indulgent fics. i seriously think all fics should be self indulgent. writing fics should be fun, so please write whatever you want! also, theres no such thing as an overdone trope. if you want to write a fake dating enemies to lovers fic, please write it! you might think there are already a bunch out there and its not worth writing another one, but youre wrong! there isnt one out there thats been written by you yet. go write it!

make playlists. now this is a bit specific to me because im absolutely obsessed with music, but making playlists that fit the mood of the fic has always helped me while writing and gotten me out of writers block before!

take your time. writing is freaking hard and when writers block hits, theres rarely ever something that you can do. try not to stress too much abt it! it happens to the best of us!

balance dialogue and detail. its important to find a middle. if im reading a fic and theres paragraph after paragraph after paragraph of detail, the chance of me just skipping that part is really high. because even though i love detail, it does get boring. so use dialogue to spice it up!

reading. okay, this sounds weird because youre asking for writing tips, but reading seriously help your writing so much! if you wanna improve your writing skills, reading a lot is going to be key. now, im not saying reading is necessary, but i do think that it can help you to better! whats even more important though is that you try to analyse people’s writing while reading. when i say you should analyse people’s writing, i do not mean you should write an entire analysis of a book, but to take a second and think to yourself how the authors just did that. how did they convey oc’s sadness? why did they just describe the weather? whats the purpose of this scene?

switch up sentence/paragraph length. shorter sentences/paragraphs = emphasise something and pick up the pace. longer sentences/paragraphs = slow down the story and allow for more detail. its important that you do a mix of both. utilise the length to your advantage. a well placed short sentence/paragraph can pack a lot of punch and turn your sad story in a heartbreaking one.

outline your fics. look this is very personal again because some people dont like to outline their fics, but i recommend outlining your fics. and when i say outline your fics, you can do it as little or as much as you want! it can be a few notes, or a long list of every detail you want to include. i just want you to know where this story is headed. its so easy to write yourself in a corner and trust me, you dont wanna end up there.

allow yourself to be free. this connects to the previous point i just made. even though i do recommend outlining your fics, i am also a firm believer of taking the story somewhere else if you feel like it. ive scrapped complete outlines before. half of the scenes i write also arent in my outline at all. you dont have to stick to the outline. if you think that a specific scene would add something to your story, then please go ahead and write that scene. just always remember where youre headed and dont loose focus.

have fun. i just really wanna reiterate this point again. its just so important to me that you have fun while writing! seriously. its just fanfiction. it should be fun. go crazy. i support you!

Yeah...so WW84 wasn't good. At all. I went into this with moderate expectations and was still disappointed.

From scenes that ran on for way too long (I.e the opening, which btw who lets a little girl compete in what seems to be an adult race course.), lazy CG (seriously that cheetah design could have been so much better. I wont say its Cats 2019 bad as its slightly above it), to inconsisties both in the film (like the fact that there needs to be physical contact or close proximity for the crystal to work to all of the sudden being able to broadcast all over the world where even non english speakers can understand) and it's own continuity (wasn't it stated in BvS that Diana walked away from man's world a century ago?).

There is also the issue that has been brought up by other posts about how Steve's conciousness essentially possesses some random dude and proceeds to sleep with Diana without as if we are supposed to gloss by it. And the fact that Steve isn't cautious at all during the action sequences given that it isnt his body so you think he'd be careful.

I know that Steve is a pilot but I'm pretty sure there is a huge difference between piloting a WW 1 plane and a modern jet.

The villain honestly should have just been Max. You would think in the trailer it was Barbara/Cheetah, but she was essentially Electro from Amazing Spiderman 2. Where she could have been cut and the movie would have been better tbh. Why doesn't Max just wish for his company to be successful? Why does he wish to be the crystal? You would think that the crystal would have a fail safe against something like this given the number of civilizations it destroyed and is still preserved. Also how the fuck are strong winds able to stop Diana when we see her taking punches and headbutts from Doomsday and Superman?

Why have this movie set in the 80's exactly? The movie goes out of it's way in terms of aesthetic and look to remind us that it set in the 80's but in terms of plot/storyline, there was nothing mentioned or I can remember where it needed to be era specific.

The first one (despite its clunky 3rd act) had enough intrigue, drama and fun moments to keep me excited. But this, wow did it drag out for too long and alot of the scenes could have been cut. Honestly I would rank this movie around the same level as Aquaman, where it makes the mistake that because it's more light hearted and "fun" to cover the fact that its story is underwhelming.

okay im gonna be completely honest with yall and say that my every single try at keeping a journal failed spectacularly and i lost motivation after like a few months so my only journals rn are my fancy fake-leather-bound calendar to note tests and assessments into, a kinda roughed up notebook that i uses for noting down poems or scribbling or passing notes in class, and a kinda fancy bullet journal notebook that i used as a book of shadows for a while but since my fountain pen died i didnt touch it

i love sunrises because its so peaceful and everyone is asleep but also i subconsciously immediately correlate them with waiting for a train to take me to school (because thats basically the only time i see them) so its a bittersweet love especially with my fucked up biological clock

okay heres the thing. for anyone else both my playlist library and my bookshelf would be considered pure chaos of a mad man b u t they actually have a highly focused system which means that i sort them based on their vibes, lovability and (in case of books) their age and whether or not theyre a part of a series so i would say my bookshelf is rather organised (when a quarter of it isnt occupying my desk that is) and my music is more organised than not but sometimes it gets out of control and i have to sort it entirely again

ok so this posts been a long time a comin’ but i finally feel like im drunk enough to talk about (and never shut the fuck up about) one of my favorite bands... Hole

hole’s music has meant a lot to me since i picked up Live Through This at some boring ass used cd store that also happened to sell erotic fantasy novels about good fathers. but anyway. holes music is for women with bad fathers. women who are kind of fucked up and angry about it, too. women who have trauma and scars and are kinda gross. women who were wronged but somehow by the grace of god empowered in the face of their horrible experiences. 

or at least it feels like that, dont it?

that was the main appeal of hole to me, anyway. i fell in love with this album around the second or third listen through. i was like, damn, shes pissed. it was so refreshing to hear a woman just screaming out her frustrations. how cathartic must it have been to be able to not only get it out, but also be taken somewhat seriously? of course hole never got the recognition they deserved. im of the unpopular opinion that they were waayyyy better than nirvana. without sounding kinda sappy... you know what fuck it im not apologizing to any of u. hole totally made me embrace womanhood. it influenced my own, much beloved way to just exist. 

but also i guess i just really love tunes.

ok so heres the part where i write my onions about their four studio albums 

Pretty On the Inside

their first album and admittedly, my least favorite (that doesnt say much because i still really enjoy it). its sound is much more abrasive. love employs her most guttural screams in this one, but ill get to that. to its credit, its the most experimental but many interpret it as amateur guitar screeches and song bits just hashed together. and maybe theyre right! but what band doesnt have that not-quite-there-yet first album? its an unrefined, beautiful mess. A song title or two is spelled wrong. Garbadge man is one that comes to mind. and for some reason, its just... fitting. its an artistic mistake left in and its so dumb but thats the fun in it! thats the punk in it! they dont give a fuck so why should you? this album is a messy bitch. 

track im gonna nut about: mrs. jones

this song is apparently about a back alley abortion, and its just as brutal. love is screaming, just guttural sounds and expletives and nauseating lyrics. when i first heard it, i was absolutely entranced in the atrocity of it all. shes sweating, panting. i will follow you down the sick drain

Live Through This

their most popular album also happens to be my favorite! the start of it all...

i havent shut up about this album since day one because i just like it so much! she refines her skills and just comes out with a successful album that ties an array of horrible themes and wraps them up in a pretty pink bow. its soft aesthetic covers the dark, sickening themes that make the album. rape, anorexia, self harm, self hatred, violence, abuse... the list goes on. someone i one knew asked me why women with bipolar disorder and bpd love hole so much and i had to bite my tongue but to be brutally honest we probably like it because love had the nuts to scream about taboo themes that are so hurtfully common in our lives. just like how the depressed rally behind the smiths. oh that and the musics awesome. but anyway, the cover is a beauty queen the moment shes crowned. its supposed to represent someone who has fought, clawed, and fucked her way to the top. but look! shes the queen! shes the beauty queen! everyone will finally love her and treat her with respect! and all she had to do was sell her soul. all she had to do was get abused over and over to the point of breakdown. but she made it, didnt she? i mean, look how pretty the crown is!

i dont have as many onions on this one. supposedly, love didnt want this album to become ‘the widow album’, but theres a song or two about kurt’s death snuck in there. this albums loud, but not nearly as angry as the first two. in fact, when shes not singing catchy pop tunes about how jaded she is, shes being sincere and heartfelt. all in all, its a fantastic album and my second favorite that hole has to offer.

ive heard two stories about what this songs supposedly about. on one hand, people say its about two lovers. the girl wants to lose her virginity to the guy, so she drives (recklessly) to his house and dies in an accident. she’ll never grow old, she’ll go to heaven tonight. on the other hand, i heard that love just wanted a fun song to sing to her daughter, frances bean. either way, it makes me want to dance. so idk if its about teenagers fucking or about a little girl who just needed a song, but its cool.

Nobody’s Daughter

years later, hole released their final album. when i first heard it, i was disappointed. the first track was great, but then.... i noticed her voice had deteriorated significantly due to her smoking and other vocal abuse. and i thought, damn, i really wish she released this when she was younger. she sounds normal when she screams, but i guess to compensate when singing softer parts, she does this kind of weird weird thing when enunciating that... ok i cant pinpoint or describe what exactly it is but it kinda sucks. ‘honey’ is the only hole song that i dont like very much, and its the best song to use as an example when trying to explain how her voice got all fucked. now, we cant all be bowie (whose singing voice only got better after years of smoking). but still. 

anyways, i listened to the album again, and i mean really listened to it. and actually! the smoker voice is the beauty of it! its a woman who is past jaded and past giving fucks about anyone or anything. its songs from a woman of experience. and she still sounds badass! her voice is so rough, she sounds like she could still fuck anyone up. its exciting.

It’s not pointless at all! It provides me a lot of extra context for her. This is also where I can finally talk about my idea. Okay, so… with the royalty/history and mushroom themes as well as the being trapped in a manor/castle… she kind of a little bit reminds me of Princess Peach. I mean, Peach is Princess Toadstool. There’s not really a Tone I can add to her with this beyond aesthetics (I might especially pull from the Shadow Queen), but you can definitely give her more of a… she dislikes the situation she’s in sort of personality that can work towards her rebelling and trying to seek out the unknown, such as playing sburb. She’s sick of being treated like a damsel, who isn’t allowed to explore or easily take part in all the things she enjoys.. …Even if she is naturally a little paranoid because of how she’s been raised.

Design: 

Hair/accessories: So I edited her barrettes a little. I thought they were cute, but they were kind of just sprinkled on randomly, and they didn’t match her color theme. So I moved them into select locations and changed them to that peachy color. I also gave her some big earrings to be reminiscent of Peach’s! They could even be homemade, since she’s the DIY crafty type. 

Dress/shirtskirt: I wanted to add a waistline and border detail that reminded of peach’s dress while retaining the general shape, because I did really love her look. I also updated the symbol a little. I wanted to give it juuust a touch more color variety without taking away the simplicity of the design. It looks more like a recognizable Mushroom now. 

Shoes/tentacles: The shoes ended up being smothered by the tentacles a little. I decided to give her some small pointed pumps, edited from fan-troll’s sprite sheet, and I redid the tentacles. I liked them in theory, but they looked a bit too much like jellyfish limbs? So now maybe they’re stuffed velvet tentacles with posable wires inside that allows her to shape them to her aesthetic!

so something (refer to the song he said suits myday) happened with jae recently and ive seen fans trying to defend him by @ing him and saying that they love him which is fine - great even! but what i dont approve is how everyone’s basically forgotten about the whole matter because they had concerts so instead of @-ing him and asking him to explain himself, they tell him what a great concert it was which is also great bc their concerts are honestly amazing. basically my pet peeve is when ppl dismiss the problematic action of some people just bc they like them.

another thing is that there were some fans who started guilting others for wanting to drop day6 completely because of what jae did and in my opinion i think it is totally cool to want to drop a group if they did smth bad like??? its ur life???? u can choose who you want to like. what is not cool is pulling out all the good things the person has ever done in their entire life and try to remind others about the positive sides of the person. yes. they’re an encouraging person, etc. but that does not cancel out the bad things they’ve done until they explain/apologise. what is infuriating is just the manner some people took it?? they literally went ahead and tweeted shit like “would your parents drop you if you did smth wrong?” and “you’re seriously gonna drop someone whos been nothing been nice because of one incident?” yes. people will and you dont have any fucking right to stop them? so dont go pulling out receipts.

13. dream job: hmmm. i mean i dont dream of working, i dont have a dream “job”, but if the question is about my dream “thing i wanna do a lot of in my life” then i guess my answer is… idk… something where i can just engage in whatever is interesting to me at the moment. like in the vein of my tumblr blogs where i can just post and talk about stuff im interested in. idk if that means being a youtuber or journalist or just someone who does something else and engages in my interests as a hobby, but yeah. or something to do with linguistics of course. though like i dont wanna be a teacher and thats basically the only path lmao (that i would even consider, anyway)

14. dream trip: you know i dont actually have a lot of interest in travel. idk, it stresses me out. i cant think about going places without worrying about how i’ll get around, what i’ll be doing, what i’ll be able to eat since i have a lot of food anxieties… idk. if someone i love wanted to go on a trip with me i’d probably be down, but i dont really know on my own.

16. languages: are amazing and i love them. okay fine lol i only speak english, but i took german in middle and high school, i took latin in high school as well, then took latin and ancient greek in college, and then after college i did a lot of looking into hungarian, vietnamese, a little bit of indonesian, turkish, and polish, and then recently i’ve been pretty focused on korean for obvious reasons. i speak none of those languages tho, lol. if i heard someone speaking some of those i could get the gist of what types of things theyre talking about most likely, but honestly my whole thing with languages is that im more interested in learning about the intricacies of how languages work and especially how they change over time than i am in actually learning the language. i’d love if my dumb adhd brain allowed me to focus hard enough and really commit to becoming fluent in a second language because so far i’ve only steadily approached being barely conversational, i’ve never actually reached even that point yet lol. and being only fluent in english makes me feel like a stupid american lol. i pick up bits of language really easily, but the rigor of learning ALL the vocab and ALL the little details you need to become actually fluent is where i fall off. 

like whenever i go through an anime phase, i pick up lots and lots of japanese. like if they keep using a word i’ll see it in the subtitles and figure that it must mean that, and then i’ll pay attention to the endings they use and how they inflect it and i’ll make little inferences about what those signify, so then when i hear a word that i dont recognize but it has a grammatical ending that i know, i can infer the meaning of the word from context, and im going through this same learning process with korean now and it’s super super fun and i’m loving how much progress ive made (though i could have been making progress like three times as fast if i was actually taking a korean class)… but the actual work of learning common phrases, learning the sheer volume of vocab, all that stuff… yeah that’s where i fall off. so idk how fluent i’ll get in korean, but i’m down to find out, lol. maybe this is the one i’ll really try to focus on and achieve it with!

20. random fact: idk... if yall couldnt tell and didnt already know this, i’m a linguist haha. i went to school for linguistics, i majored in linguistics and classics (latin, ancient greek, etc) though honestly i was only into the languages, roman and greek history is cool and all but not really what i’m most into. majoring in classics was a mistake lol but oh well. i didnt end up graduating though because of unrelated reasons.... adhd, depression, just a general sense that the way the whole system works just wasnt made for me and it didnt click with me and ive never been good at forcing myself to be good at school... and like i was tired of hearing from professors that i have “a very organized mind when it comes to linguistics stuff” (something a greek professor said that meant a lot to me) or that i “understand how language works better than most other students my age” and that im a natural and that its impressive how nuanced my understanding of these concepts is.... while also failing or almost failing all of the classes whose professors said that about me. like basically all those statements were followed by a “, but” or a “, so if you just-”.... sigh. so i guess i’m not “actually” a linguist. whatever “actually” means there. 

so other random fact i guess, which is still related but anyway... i have a conlang! that’s a constructed language. ive been working on a language for like 6 or 7 years. its at a state right now where it’s not really something i can just like... speak? it was at one point, maybe. but basically what i like to do is try out various ideas i have about language and phonology and morphology, so my language is kind of like a sandbox lol. if youre a scientist you conduct experiments, if youre a linguist i think you should try making a conlang. its not a common hobby but its something i spend an unconscionable amount of time thinking about lol. like basically 24/7. i’m almost always thinking about my word for x thing im seeing or thinking about, or like some sound change i heard that some language had, and how that would sound if applied to the words in my language... 

like the reason my language isnt at a point right now where i can speak it is because getting into korean has made me think about massively reconfiguring how the grammar works. its always been kinda like latin and german, cause those are what i was taking when i started, and then it got kinda like ancient greek, so the grammar has/had a lot of complicated conjugations that are just honestly so superfluous... its such a mess lol... i have a much better understanding of how those systems come about in language now, so even if i remake my language to have verb conjugations like latin or greek, it’d be a much more coherent and natural system than the one thats existed in my language for years... but after learning about hungarian and korean in particular, i really wanna try making it a lot more logical like those languages are. but my big thing is phonology (speech sounds), so i just get hung up on sound changes and cool new consonants and vowels to add, so i keep putting off actually fixing my language lol. also ive become attached to my awful, amateurish words haha. im so bad at this... a real conlanger like tolkien or the dude who made the languages for game of thrones would look at mine and scoff haha. most of my words are just straight up stolen from words in latin, german, many others, but predominantly... english. i just mangle english words and call it my own lol, and ive been trying to replace those words with original ones that i made up arbitrarily... like my word for nose is just “nass” and my word for dog is “handir” which is just based on english “hound” and german “Hund” and stuff lol. i wanna change those
