"As we've observed time and again, everyone reinforces each other's anxiety about looking weird if they're the only ones doing the right thing. They would rather sabotage their own health than violate social codes."
Also preserved in our archive (daily updates)
From September but still relevant.
By Jessica wildfire
The science of not helping.
In 1913, an engineer named Max Ringelmann noticed something weird about human behavior. When you told one person to do something like pull a rope, they tried really hard. When you put them into groups, they didn't try as hard.
They slacked.
Psychologists have identified this behavior as social loafing. Sometimes they also call it diffusion of responsibility, defined as "the idea that the presence of others changes the behavior of the individual by making them feel less responsible for the consequences of their actions," leading to "moral disengagement."
A 2005 study confirmed that when you put people into teams, each person does less, with the exception of highly motivated individuals, who wind up doing most of the work. If you were ever the team leader or facilitator, you know all about social loafing.
It happens online, too.
A 2022 review on diffusion of responsibility revealed that it happens all the time, in situations ranging from donations to tipping. It even happens in online communication. If you email one person, they're more likely to respond. They also give longer, more detailed responses. If you email a bunch of people, and they see each other copied on the message, they don't respond at all or they send shorter, less helpful replies.
Groups also make riskier decisions than individuals.
A team of psychologists asked a bunch of adults to play with marbles. They put them into pairs. Each pair's job was to stop the marble from sliding down a ramp. They won points if they stopped the marble before it hit the bottom. They got more points if their partner stopped it before they did. As predicted, both players got worse over time. As the study concludes, "The co-player's presence led participants to act later, reduced their subjective sense of agency, and also attenuated the neural processing of action outcomes." Basically, it made them slower and dumber.
In 1968, two psychologists wanted to see what adults would do in an emergency when they were alone, versus when they were in a group. They started pumping fake smoke into a room while people filled out a questionnaire. When they were on their own, 75 percent of participants did something. When they were in a group, the dynamic almost completely reversed. More than 60 percent of them did nothing. They just kept working on the questionnaire.
When the researchers asked why, participants said they didn't want to look stressed or anxious. They figured if nobody else was doing anything, then there was nothing wrong. They figured they were just overreacting. They cared more about looking weird than letting the building burn down.
That's called pluralistic ignorance.
You see similar results in studies over the last several decades. On their own, people generally take more responsibility.
There's nobody else to do it.
When you put them into groups, they start acting selfish and stupid. They look to each other for validation first. If they don't get any signals to act, then they'll ignore what their own eyes are telling them. The more people you add to a situation, the more passive they become, the less likely they jump into action.
About a decade after the smoke study, another team of psychologists ran a similar experiment, but this time it was a man beating a woman in public. Participants intervened when they thought the man was a stranger. When they thought the man was her husband, they didn't do anything. That's called confusion of responsibility, when bystanders think it's not their place to step in or step up to help, or they're afraid helping will get them into trouble with some kind of authority figure.
A 2018 study looked at the brain's natural response to emergencies. They observed a significant drop in the central gyrus and the prefrontal cortex, the parts of your brain associated with helping. A person's first reaction is to preserve themselves. Their brain has to cross an empathy or compassion threshold in order to risk their own safety and security by helping someone. Basically, they have to care more about the person in danger than themselves.
A 2019 study in Aggressive Behavior found that friends and family members help each other when strangers don't. In fact, knowing the person makes you roughly 20 times more likely to help. Flip that, and you see that if someone doesn't know you, they're 20 times less likely to get involved.
Saturation also plays a role.
When you add more people to a situation, there's less for them to do. At least, that's what they usually think. If someone's already helping, then bystanders are less likely to get involved.
The gravity of an emergency also makes a difference. Basically, an emergency has to look bad enough to get someone's attention, but not so bad that it triggers their self-protection instincts.
You can see why this setup poses a problem when it comes to a crisis that falls way above or way below that threshold.
The climate crisis and the pandemicene hit us right in the middle of the bystander effect, exploiting pluralistic ignorance and diffusion of responsibility. It's exactly the kind of problem everyone wants someone else to do something about.
The super rich grasp this vulnerability, at least intuitively.
So do politicians.
They're perfectly happy to profit off our deaths and the destruction of our future while everyone stands around waiting for someone else to make the hard decisions, for someone else to make the personal sacrifices, for someone else to deal with the problem. Even worse, they use the inaction they see as an excuse for them to do nothing. After all, why should Monica give up her carbon bomb vacation when Heather is going to Italy?
As we've observed time and again, everyone reinforces each other's anxiety about looking weird if they're the only ones doing the right thing. They would rather sabotage their own health than violate social codes.
Some research has pushed back on the bystander effect, showing that people do tend to offer help even when they're in a crowd. However, the Aggressive Behavior study shows this likely happens because of accountability cues. In other words, they act because there's a camera present of some kind or some other indication that there's going to be consequences for not helping. That's why they help.
They don't want to look bad.
Here's the strangest part:
Most people know about the diffusion of social responsibility, along with terms like social loafing and pluralistic ignorance. If they don't, they've heard the story of Kitty Genovese, even if it's exaggerated. We have countless examples of societies allowing moral crime and social murder to happen right in front of them, simply because their membership in society itself encouraged their silence and complicity.
They know all this, but they still decide to stay silent and complicit when it's happening right in front of them.
Maybe psychologists should study that.
Even when people know about these psychological and sociological hangups, they still choose to dwell in denial and wishful thinking. They tell themselves it's different this time, or there's some kind of exception to excuse it. They still choose to stand around and wait for someone else to do the right thing, until it's too late. They're really good at admitting fault and promising to do better after the fact, especially when they can fall back on a diffusion of responsibility as the reason.
Then they wait for everyone to forget.
Rinse and repeat.
It's ironic that we keep talking about society and community as something that calls on us to summon our better selves and help each other, when our actions continue to prove that group behavior often leads us to making bad decisions and indulging in our worst selves.
Simply being in a community isn't enough.
You have to do something.

Hey MilfGPT, could you write me a short explanation of why in hell so many blogs are being deleted right now?
You're the third major one I've heard about this week
Generating your answer now:
...
Back in February, there was some very loud outrcy about a trans Tumblr user (name escapes me at the moment, I hate being bad with names: Progesterone?) getting deleted for publicly protesting her transition timeline getting flagged as a adult content. Afterwards, Tumblr's CEO began harassing her on Twitter. I was deleted the first time for speaking out loudly against this. When I came back, i split my personal and covid blogs so I wouldn't lose my entire covid audience. My original covid blog was deleted for suicide baiting for telling an antimasker to "take a long walk off a short pier" because staff changed the definition My second new personal blog was deleted after I was swarmed and mass-reported by people who were mad about TME being a thing after I defended the term/concept loudly. Tumblr moderation basically doesn't exist, so if you flag something as offensive enough times, someone just bans the account so they look like they're doing their jobs over there. It's been weaponized by TMEs several times this year specifically to silence trans women talking about how poorly the queer community can treat TMAs.
Basically, It's been a rough year for transfems on tumblr because Matt Mullisquig drinks his own piss. Fuck that guy.

Read this thread about cult social relationships by Matthew Remski:
When you deconstruct harmful ideas and beliefs—from antivax positions to reactionary social views—you will inevitably be seen and felt as attacking the relationships that people form through those views. That’s a big problem in a lonely world, and there will be blowback.
In anti-cult theory and journalism, this alienation is usually seen as unavoidable. The idea is that the relationships within a toxic group are transactional, unfulfilling, and fragile. The gamble is that the person will wake up into wholesome relationships outside of the group.
That may work out. Or, the person will crawl out of a mid-level engagement with NXIVM and find themselves in late stage capitalism looking for gig work, missing the friends they had on the inside, and the sense of shared purpose.
This analysis can scale up: It’s been helpful for some to look at QAnon, the Trucker Convoy, and antimask protestors through a cult studies lens. All the boxes get ticked: information silos, emotional manipulation, charismatic leaders and their failed prophecies. But there is never a single explanation and the activities within these groups are diverse. It was dangerous for antivax parents to open mask-free homeschool spaces when the schools had to shut down. But the reason for the school was the outer layer on what it felt like to be in the school, or teach in it.
In researching an antivax parenting group on IG, I saw they posted about their parties and playdates in politicized language. They were also parenting at the time, doing all the things that parents do. Shooting criticism into that space will feel like an intimate attack.
There was a lot of disgust at the Convoy crowd for partying on Parliament Hill. But pissing on snow while rave music throbs can signify bonds that may outlast any incoherent ideology. Which is why the same group will cycle through different ideas. The ideas may be fragile.
The most dangerous bonds are locked in with fascist hatred and must be resisted. But most participants are not leaders, and not monetized. Many of the yoga and wellness people I interviewed had no idea how toxic the views of the leaders were. But they did feel they had friends.
These groups are diagonalist, distrusting all power structures, including (maybe most of all) an interpretive power structure that would discredit their views without knowing or valuing their relationships.
The truckers hated Trudeau’s position on vaccines and fossil fuels, but they may have hated more what they saw as his smug privilege and mastery of national hypocrisies. He stands outside and above their society and friend circles, like Clinton using the word “deplorable.”
There’s an amazing passage in Naomi Klein's Doppelganger where she basically asks Why should we be shocked that after decades of neoliberal cruelty and individualism, people will say Fuck you to the “elites” who are suddenly asking them to act like we’re a society after all?
I think this problem scales further, with different political valances, up to broader critiques of religion from rationalists/skeptics, where the target is low-hanging fruit: crazy shit people believe. The collateral damage is usually a neglect of social desires and needs.
Currently there’s this question floating around about how so many former members of rationalist and skeptic movements, and IDW influencers, slid rightward and conspiratorial in their politics. Many answers there, including: “They might have always been like that.” But one answer is that when Hitchens guts Mother Teresa like a fish, there’s schadenfreude, but no more clarity around the diverse reasons for what people experienced when they gathered around her. The charismatic religious is taken down by the charismatic debunker.
And what is left over, aside from lonely smug men? Are people forming real communities of solidarity and resilience through Sam Harris’s meditation app, or in Bill Maher’s garage? Is there a single pro-community initiative that has emerged from this commentariat?
If not, could this be because they never really took an interest in the day-to-day lives or shared needs of the people whose ideas and beliefs they preferred to snigger at?
I’m not debunking all debunking here because we’re all doing what we can. But I am advocating for a more social and anthropological approach, an approach that offers more than “follow the science” or “develop critical thinking,” or anything else that implies stupidity among people who need friends and meaningful work. We all guffawed when Ron Watkins, pretty much caught out as Q, gave up on the LARP by saying “Maybe QAnon was all about the friends we made on the way.” It was a POS statement for a POS dude to make.
But he wasn't all wrong. That’s the thing about grifters. They exploit a social vacuum progressives often think they can fill with irony. They wrap their followers in flags or ideas, but in that huddle there are real connections that have to be understood and not dismissed.
This is very relevant when dealing with cults on all sides of the political spectrum.
Most young people are wrapped in colorful flags and anti-scientific homophobic ideas pushed by big industries. But they also find community through those flags and ideas. No young person wants to be outcast by their peers.
And then there's the people who deny climate science and oppose catastrophe mitigation policies. These people also find a powerful form of community. They are uniting through a shared relationship to the land. The relationship they all share with the land is toxic and misinformed. But uniting over your shared perspective and feelings about land is powerful. Human-land relationships are neglected by modern neoliberal society. But solastalgia is now causing everyone to reach desperately for that human-land connection. And we're all coming up with different perspectives on land and forming social groups around those perspectives.

I hate the fact that we're literally not supposed to do or say anything to maskless customers!! Makes no sense!!
About half the customers come in the store maskless and most cough their damn lungs out and management won't let us do shit about it!! But all employees have to wear masks regardless. 🙄
A perfect example of why this fucking pandemic has gone on as long as it has and why it will not end anytime soon unless we crack down on antimaskers and fine (or even arrest) them for being maskless in public. I want this shit to be over as much as everyone else!!

Be me, druid firbolg
Be not me, rogue and paladin of the Cathedral
Context, we were in a valley where three dudes touched some painting, causing eldritch horrors to spread, ranging from skinless wolves to a mushroom plaque.
We were getting followed and harassed by an invisible bastard
We met future bbeg and his dying father in the woods. They were both loyal members of The Church, who hated druid and paladins of The Cathedral.
Hmmm
Dudes actually pretty chill and we seperate amicably.
Later in mushroom quarantine party is trying to help people. Sets up communal area for healed people.
Meet bbeg again. His father died so bbeg moved to lead the Church in the quarantine.
Bbeg blames us for his father's death
Invisible bastard following us strikes again
Bbeg still chill. Tells us to hide and not prevent him from burning areas down. He wants to cause enough chaos in the quarantined area in order to steal a boat and leave.
Fuckers an antimasker goddamit.
He wants to burn the local church and our communal area before going for the boats.
Rogue manages to steal some firebombs while they're burning the church, so we can use them to disable the boats.
Wait at the, now abandoned, communal area for rogue.
Rogue shows up. Talk out the plan some more
Bbeg shows up with two ballistas in tow.
"three questions. What do you intend to do with my firebombs? Why is the communal area empty? Why am I seeing you again?"
Fight
Paladin duels bbeg
Rogue and I fight goons and ballistas.
We're losing on all fronts
Paladin gets beat within an inch of his life. Bbeg grants him the respect of letting him outlive the rest of us.
Rogue gets wrecked in the open.
Im stuck behind a cart, about to get the same fate as the rogue
Bbeg brags about how much cooler his religion is than the paladins
Paladin: "it's that ego that made your father deserve everything I did to him"
Bbeg angy
Bbeg punches paladin
Does four damage, paladin had three left.
Rogue dies.
I use my last wild shape to worm out.
Decide that was a tpk and end the campaign.
Really excited to see my druid again tho.
Feel free to tell me stories in the replies. My party has gotten close but never quite there, so I wanna hear about it if you wanna share :)

i’ve been seeing a lot of stuff, mainly on twitter, to the effect of “the thing that this pandemic has really highlighted how many people think going out to eat is a personality trait 😂😂” and... like... i don’t really know what else to say other than “stop doing this”
i think this thing has really highlighted how shallow people’s collective empathy really is, and it’s especially frustrating where it concerns these I’m Better At Doing Lockdown Than You sort of attitudes, because it postures as coming precisely from a place of empathy. i hate to be like “at least antimask and antivax assholes come by it honestly, that they don’t give a shit about other people” because it’s an abysmal way to think and feel. still, i find the thought occurring to me more frequently when i’ve been encountering increasing cruelty and ill will coming from people positioning themselves as being on the side of the greater good. i know the way i feel translates to “i don’t understand why you’re being so mean”, and that’s the thing. i just... don’t. what’s the sense in pretending that it doesn’t bother you.
nobody authentically thinks going to restaurants and bars is a personality trait, and i’m sure everyone is very well aware of this. so why has it become so commonplace to be petty about people being depressed about having to go to work or school and then stay/come home and stare at the wall? bars and restaurants, by and large, are very easy solutions to being stir crazy and that’s not really an option anymore. especially if you defaulted to that back in normal times, it’s jarring and difficult to have your routine forcibly disrupted like that.
everyone’s malaise right now, no matter how superficial or stupid you might think it is, is very real to them. and i know the people doing this are in some kind of pain too, otherwise they wouldn’t be lashing out like this. i hate to post kumbaya bullshit because i generally think it comes of as labored and corny, but i don’t get the reason or gain of dumping on people for hating living through a global pandemic and wanting a sense of normality. because you know it isn’t about the bar or the restaurant, right? it’s about wanting to return to a time before collective anxiety, about wanting to live your life as you used to before it was dangerous. we all want this to end, and we’re all frustrated. don’t be a dick in trying to distance yourself from that when you feel it too.

You know, the following seasons of Shadow and Bone need to make it more clear Jesper and Nina both are bisexual/pansexual. Not only will it make their characters more like their characters in the books, but it will also be so cool to have a man and a woman as bisexual/pansexual representation in the show.
I think one way to do this is to have them flirt with and maybe even fight over the same person, someone who is AFAB, someone who is fluid in presentation, someone who is bisexual themself.
Me. I'm talking about me. I want Jesper and Nina to fight over me. Is that too much to ask for?

Time for the latest installment of me providing my Thoughts™ and Feelings™ about Shadow and Bone as I watch it; this time it is on episodes 6 and 7:
I'm kind of disappointed Alina didn't stay with the Crows. That would have been so cool. But I honestly can't blame her for leaving, and it was nice for her to be reunited with Mal
Kaz's magic trick to escape the Darkling was fantastic! Get fucked, asshole! But also, the fact those two even stared down each other was like a weird battle between two angsty boys who aren't dealing with their emotions in the proper way at all but on opposite ends of the spectrum
I was wincing the entire time Alina was walking up to the stag. I knew the gunshot was coming 'cos, you know, the books, but it was executed well, and I felt so bad for the stag
The whole thing of the amplifiers being a part of the person's body instead of being like a piece of jewellery, like in the books, is metal as fuck. I didn't expect body horror in this show and I'm honestly not a fan of that shit, but it does show how serious and painful this is on Alina. And I like that it's not pretty, that the antlers aren't symmetrical (which is a shocker 'cos of how much of a perfectionist David is), 'cos it being ugly makes it real and devastating
David throwing that book was so funny and Jesper's reaction was priceless. I love them both dearly
Nina and Matthias' hostility is still great, but seeing them warm up to each other, literally and figuratively, felt so genuine and sweet. Like, that truly is Nina and Matthias, and that makes me so happy (I'm looking forward to being absolutely wrecked in the future)
Can I just say that I want to hug Inej? Like, all of the Crows' backstories are upsetting, but we are seeing Inej's more explicitly and it hurts to see my girl in pain like that
I haven't cried to the show yet, but that scene of Kaz and Inej by the fire got me so close. I was legit tearing up
Not to do a complete 180, but I did not care about the Darkling's backstory. At all. Boy, you made the Shadow Fold. I don't care how or why you made it, you're still a little bitch and I hate you
But God, it's honestly kinda nice to see the Darkling be his true and horrible self. He's such a good and easily hateable villain. I love hating him, tbh
Also, the Darkling saying his most famous line of "Make me your villain" was impeccable
However, that got upstaged by Kaz and Inej saying, "No mourners, no funerals." The ✨serotonin✨ hit me like a ton of bricks and I accepted it all with open arms. I need more
Stop roasting Jesper like this. He's always looking good; you're all just rude and don't recognise attractiveness when it's right in front of you. And I said three things before Jesper said them; our solidarity grows ✌
Milo returned! That goat is far too cute and I too want to give him a kiss on the head like Mal did
Lastly, I cannot wait for the inevitable cliffhanger that the last episode will have in store for me. I don't know what I'm gonna do when we finish it tonight. Probably wallow and crack open some fanfic instead of working on finals stuff

things you can’t request
-nsfw (why? this is a sfw blog and i’m a minor)
-full fics (why? i do not have the time for that, and requests aren’t my blog’s main focus anyways)
-dark content ( why? it makes me uncomfy, and i’m a minor. while i respect writers who do write it, i will not be. do not ask me to write dark content.)
-character x character(why? this is a character x reader writing blog)
-poly relationships (why? i don’t think i’m educated on it enough to write)
-health issues (why? i wouldn’t want to say anything out of lack of knowledge!)

The 100 7x10 - Impressions
Not a proper liveblog because I skipped watching it in real time (oopsie!)
Is there like a particular reason why everyone sees the dude covered in blood - who they know was a powerful scary person - and they leave the 12-year-old child alone with him? Instead of, idk, someone grabbing her hand when they’re all running out behind her back? Like any reasonable adults would do in that scenario?
The three most dangerous women on this or any planet - YAS QUEENS
So weird how a verse in an alien language rhymes when translated into English...
Fuck yeah Echo! Stab stab those are my terms!
Octavia knew they’d turn up - of course they would lol. Dangerous foreign planet, genocidal maniac, eventually Clarke Griffin will show up. That’s just the laws of like, plot physics or something.
Hope looks super cool in the guard uniform with the haircut and the eyebrows...
Every war is the last. Until the next one. You tell him, Niylah.
Right before they cut off her drinking water to water the lawns of the rich... We were robbed of more Gabriel-Diyoza interactions on the basis of eat the rich. That little “she was a freedom fighter” comment wasn’t enough.
Cadogan really thinks he’s running the Jedi religion. Seriously. And I hate it. I actually like Jedi - even if they’re kinda’ misguided/
I really feel like Gabriel doesn’t actually know how to do the whole hostage thing...
So I’ve seen the gifs - and therefore I know that for the scene Levitt has to stay tied up. But... Clarke saying not to untie him because they need to know what Echo is planning makes no damn sense? He can talk and get untied at the same time. And clearly Octavia is close to him and he cares about her (her body language, his immediate apologies, she knows where his bedroom is in the first place).
If you’re looking for the wrong answer, it’s easy to miss the right one. Ain’t that the truth. Antivaxxers, antimaskers...
I couldn’t even laugh at Malachai’s fuckin’ cliche name, I was too busy laughing at his new extensions and his “I’m 25 and angry at the world” goth-punk outfit bahahaha (I’m not saying I wouldn’t wear it or that it isn’t a bitchin’ outfit - it just looked so out of place and was so sudden lol! Did Russell have that stuff in his closet somewhere? Like for halloween?)
YOU SAY YOU HONOR OUR TRADITIONS, SO HONOR THIS ONE. YOUR PATH TO THE THRONE LEADS THROUGH ME - SINGLE COMBAT! Boss. Ass. Bitch.
And where’d he get that fancy-ass sword? It’s not like anyone had time to pack or anything before they left earth, if they even had time to oack before leaving for the bunker...?
Did Madi... take his whole eye? Noice! But also... are people allowed to survive the conclave? Wasn’t that the whole plot and the reason why nightblood was genetically rare and the world fucking ended like it did? Both Indra (the challenger) and Madi (who I think illegally interfered) are alive. So I cannot respect or fear Sheidheda as a villain. :-/
Hiding everyone in the reactor... Now THAT’S a survivor’s move. :-3
Raven says CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT RIGHTS and I think that’s very sexy of her
Anders: Raised in the wild, slaves to their feelings... you disgust me. What are you, cheap knockoff Vulcans? Miller: Bold words for a man standing in front of a pack of armed beasts. Hell yeah!
Diyoza... Idk if it was the music or the filming or what but her death scene felt off. Just... cheap, Idk. I was all prepared to be super upset and probably cry (I love her so much!) but I was just kind of... taken out of it by the presentation.) Anybody else have that experience?
Trailer: Next Up, Bellamy Alone!

gigi i miss youuuu i remember how i used to binge read all of your work and think to myself “one day, that’ll be me. not the number of notes but she seems like she enjoys writing her cute l timestamps :))”
and now it is. i enjoy writing my work.
how are you? are you and your family well?
idk anymore man like tumblr hates my jaehyun posts they never make it to the tags the first time i post them 😑

my family are well!! thankfully no one has gotten covid but the numbers are spiking and the school board is talking about remote school again. but my sister did have to work with antimaskers until she finally quit thankfully,,, and so far no one has shown signs of covid and it's been more than 2 weeks. how are things for you?? 💜
