Hi, do you have any general tips for getting into grad school lol?

I'm trying to get into a clinical psych phD program which I know is very different from what you're doing but hey, I'll take any advice youd like to share ! Also love your art :-)!

I'll just explain how i got to this point and hope theres something worth taking from that.

For me, I did my Masters 1st bc I hadn't done in the lab work until my last year of undergrad and I wasn't sure how I would handle working on a big project and I had a general idea of what I wanted to study but it was still kinda blurry. So, I thought ok 2 years on a project that seems ok, then 4+ on something I really wanna do based on what i learned from my masters. I found my Masters advisor through a string of talking to different people about my interests, reading her papers, and asking if she happened to be looking for students. I sort of stumbled into a good situation on a bit of luck

For my PhD I had a very narrow focus for what I was looking for in terms of research, so there were only like 5 ppl doing exactly what I wanted in english speaking countries. I found them all through reading a bunch of papers, stalking their lab websites and then emailing them like: Hey! I found u through reading X paper, ur research is so cool! Here is how it fits with my interests and here is what I've done that qualifies me to work with you (in as few words as I could manage). Are you accepting students into your lab? And then if they reply that they are: would u be willing to talk with me?

During meetings the questions I always ask (aside from questions abt their research) are: what's your lab space like? How hands on are you as an adviser? What do you like about what you do/what compelled you to take on X research? And then it's also good to ask about their other students (what research they're doing and if you could email them to ask if they like this adviser as a boss/whats it like at the school).

Honestly, I feel like the best advice I could give is treat an interview like it goes both ways. You don't want a boss that sucks so grill them a bit to try to figure out what they're like as a person. And it helps to let a little passion shine thru ✨️

“jesus-!” he yelled back in surprise, almost dropping a tray of freshly baked shortbreads before whipping his head up to see what was going on only to feel like he’s been punched in the gut because there you stood by the entrance, bundled up with thick jackets like you’re preparing for winter even though fall was just settling in, your hair a haggard mess and your face gaunt from exhaustion, and looking like all parts of simon’s dream woman.

“um,” you stammered, staring at him with wide eyes and trembling hands, your heart hammering in your chest as you began to panic. “i, uh. i’m…?”

simon watched as you continued to stammer before finally taking pity on you. he placed the tray on the counter and turned to fully present himself to you, spreading his arms out in hopes that it would show you that he’s not dangerous. that you would see his flour-covered apron and see that all he’s got going on in life is baking, and then instantly be enamoured with him.

“you here for breakfast?” he asked, clearing his throat upon hearing the awkward croak of his voice. thank god for his mask because he was able to hide the flush of his cheeks, allowing him to continue to play it cool in front of you.

“yes?” you replied, still confused as to why the… baker? was wearing a homemade skull mask.

“sure,” he said and you watched as he wiped his hands on his apron. “come over here then. what’d you want to order?”

baker!simon who isn’t really a big sweets enthusiast but whose desserts are the best in the block. you asked him what made him pursue this career and you watched as he stilled, his face falling slack like he can see something you couldn’t – like he is reliving a memory – before shaking himself with a deep inhale and finally whispering, “for my brother.”

you did not probe any further, your heart heavy with guilt, but simon just turned to you with a small smile and asked, “wanna hear about ‘im?”

he gathered you in his arms as he recounted the few fond memories he has of his childhood, and you breathed him in, smelling the faint smell of macaroons and toasted butter on his skin.

baker!simon who begins dedicating his daily special treats to you. “for the apple of my eye,” when it’s apple fritters day. “for my beloved cheri,” on cherry pie day. “for my precious sugar,” on sugar cookies day.

baker!simon who proudly prances around in his frilly pink apron that has “husband material” embroidered on the chest. you gave it to him as a gag gift but simon loves it so much that he began to wear it to work, showing it off to his friends with a deep chuckle.

“my girl got it f’r me,” he says to johnny. “pretty, isn’t it?”

johnny nods amidst laughter, his body folded into himself as he clutches the counter for support.

And raccoon patty (amber) is Cuno and Cunoesse's chaos pet!!!!! The one thing Cuno fuckin cares about. hi ive been binging your blog a lot recently. i rlly adore the sheer effort you've given to these dumbass fucking characters that otherwise get such little people even attempting to appreciate or engage with them beyond very shallow depths. as someone who only really got into the p4 games relatively recently (2022. my only remembered experience with the series beforehand was like a couple episodes of the the p4anim years ago and playing p5 in 2016/2017) and kind of being shell-shocked by how characters like marie and teddie and namatame were perceived by the overall fanbase once i started engaging with it more i really appreciate all the writing and analysis and art and other shit you do for them. even the gas station attendant, a character i overlooked initially, i've come to love because of all the time and energy you put into picking them apart like a dead frog in a science class

I don't collect many things, but of the things I do collect I think the most surreal is physical Mabinogi merch.

To explain Mabinogi is an MMORPG that came out in 2008 and I've been playing it ever since beta. I'd argue it has plenty of charm and enough reason even now in 2023 for anyone with even some slight interest in it to give it a shot however to me (and to my partner) it has a special place. Not only is it how my partner and I met, but it's literally a game I have played for 15 years now; considering I'm 28 that's over half my entire life.

As you might imagine back in middle school and even early high school I didn't really have a lot of money, let alone the understanding of how to order things from overseas. So a very niche MMORPG didn't necessarily have a lot of merch out and about. While most kids at my school had Pokémon backpacks or some kind of Anime plastered on their shirt (normally Naruto or Dragonball) I never had physical merch. So I was always that annoying kid who had to verbally tell you how much I liked my dumb special interest.

To give you an idea of how much this game was a part of my life, my mother once bought me an actual copy of the Mabinogion, like; the book that the game is loosely based on, it's entirely in Welsh and my mom also gave me a dictionary to translate it, I was stoked about this; I was in early high school walking around with a black book with a red symbol on the front speaking in Welsh as you can imagine this did not make me popular and cool.

Now my partner and I collect actual official merch, just last year we acquired a few magazines, guide books, and even manga. It's incredible to behold such a snapshot of time from when this was all still new and popular.

This is a guide book from back when the slogan for the game was still "fantasy life" it would later become "anime life" and a few other things; but this is the one I remember from my childhood:

We were really excited to look through this and translate it, more over we were taken aback by the system requirements listed in the guide book, I mean just check out these specs!

The funniest part is that there was a time at which I was getting a new laptop because I had to travel and I specifically gave the guy at Bestbuy this almost exact rundown for the specs I needed. This was of course because my plan was to install Mabi on it, which I did. However I had a hard time explaining to anyone why I wanted these sort of specs specifically without saying "uh so I can play an extremely niche online game from Korea?"

We also got books that were literally Item and databooks which had full lists of items you could obtain in the game as well as what races and genders could use them:

This was an absolute trip down nostalgia lane for us.

I cannot stress just how cool it was to flip through these pages and go "oh shit I had those, oh I remember that! Remember this? Yea it was from an event, damn that was a long time ago; oh god I'm old."

It's crazy to see just how much detail and effort went into these! I didn't even know they existed, if I was aware of these back in school I'd have gone ballistic over them like, check this out there's entire pages dedicated to Generation 1:

These books are great and I personally love the manga, illustrations of the world that I've only ever seen as low poly PMGs is such a sight to behold as a long time fan.

However you may notice something, there's not a ton of physical merch. Sure there's books and manga, and it seems like at one point there were standees and a few figures, posters, and mugs; but these days getting your hands on the rarer merch can be difficult and not to mention expensive.

That's sort of why we excitedly took matters into our own hands, slowly and methodically recreating the game's PMG models as OBJs we can actually print from our 3D printer. It's not easy but it's totally worth it.

I know this probably sounds REALLY stupid to you, and I wouldn't blame you for laughing at me for it; but the fact that I have played this game for 15 years; and today I held a 3D printed figure of a Golem in my fucking hands has me feeling a certain kind of way that's hard to explain. Knowing I could print figures of our characters, our favorite NPCs, not to mention entire dungeons and create dioramas of our favorite places from a game that means so much to me is genuinely mind boggling.

I think the part of all this that still has me in disbelief is that if you asked me what I wanted when I was a depressed 16 year old in school who came home and immediately jumped on Mabi; I'd 100% tell you that I just want to live alone with a partner who enjoyed Mabi and maybe a few cats. Now I'm 28 living with a partner who I not only met via this game but who is actually significantly better than me at it lol; we also have 3 cats and our home is slowly but surely being decorated with more and more Mabinogi crafts. I don't mean to sound like my life revolves around this game, though I admit I do laugh when my partner breaks out her signature slogan of "Mabinogi is Real Life" but I guess in a sense it just feels like I've fucking made it you know? I did it, I finally got the life I was longing for and while it may not feel real; every day this sort of thing happens makes it a littler harder to deny that I'm living the dream. I'm far from rich and I'm far from healthy; and I don't exactly have a great career or anything sure, but I think 16 year old me would be happy with the way I turned out.

(what remains of Edith Finch is the perfect example) but they also like other type of games!! they're willing to play fps or first person shooting games it's just... they suck at aiming and will probably stay with being a healer or something because they deadass cannot aim AT ALL

• Cosplay is their side gig I don't have anything to add on to this but they craft everything and stitch it by theirselves

• they know how to bake!! they love making pastries and sharing it to their friends but like it's more of a daydream because they're too scared to share anything or gift something they MADE soo... :(

• They're short. like 5'2 short LMAOOO they have to wear heels or heeled shoes to reach Ren's chin

- impressive voice range like their voice stays in high but when they just woke up it's SURPRISINGLY DEEP?? like not deep deep just like mid deep

that said like, quark is still quite compelling as part of it. and the fact he defends Pel is sweet. but i also find it so difficult to take ferengi drama seriously because like, the nagus is RIGHT THERE, and he's a pure comic character. its pure comic. and that just sorta sucks drama out of it for me. whereas i think quark has the right balance of comedic greed and genuine pathos that he can carry dramatic story lines. pel isnt quiiite working for me in that respect but i already flagged my lack of interest in this specific kind of plotline earlier so its not her fault.

dax just vibing in the background of most of this episode was kinda fun though. i do like that.

okay so my verdict - ? two romance episodes back to back kinda sucks for me since i didnt really feel invested in either romance as a thing in itself, though maybe part of that is the foreknowledge that neither go anywhere, right. as an episode on its own i think its alright, but will probably be better as part of the overarching Ferengi plotlines later, i guess? idk. its not quite my thing. i did enjoy dax here though so she's starting to win me over after a rocky start

It’s a very niche fandom, so I wasn’t exactly hopeful. In fact it got way more love than I’d hoped (marry me Guest Commenter Leanne C). But it is my favourite story and possibly my favourite show, so.

It’s Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, specifically the one-man Andrew Scott adaptation (it is amazing), and it doesn’t have an online fandom whatsoever.

The Shadow of Your Shadows was my literal love-letter for it. Mostly for Sonya, who I loved more every time. She’s so wet cat it’s NUTS.

idk whats funnier to me. i like the first option bc continuity and also the thought of that experience sticking in her brain and thus propelling her to get very very good at such a specific ability is fantastic

but the second one i like because what KIND OF REASON would somebody have to lie about BOAT PADDLING PROWESS. not once, but TWICE.

i hope she brings up boat paddling one more time in a future card. third time's the charm would mean this is truly a recurring pattern. running joke that mc will admit to her weaknesses (eventually) in most situations so she can adequately grow and improve

orville peck released new stuff?? btw i was wondering why we didn't really get a fully colorful glitter cowboy in kpop as far as i remember... with all of the western adjecent styling it would make sense but maybe that would become to costumy them

as for why there hasn't really been a lot of spectacle country styling in kpop........well. it's pretty long answer that has to do with several factors like:

golden era country as a genre just isn't popular in the way that it would need to be to catch international attention

country music pretty dramatically changed post 9/11 and the pop country that gets media attention + play nowadays portrays a particular nationalistic message that is viewed uh......distastefully outside of the us. it's also pretty wrapped up in right wing rhetoric and while this is absolutely not true of the majority of the genre and definitely not true of golden era country, it all gets painted with the same brush; country's 'tacky' and 'only about trucks and beer and girls and conservatism' because that's what the image of country music has been to the general public for the last twenty years.

despite a lot of country music's themes being very universal, it's a folk genre, an intrinsically american one at that (i'm not going to get into too many semantics here but it's not totally specific to the us there is canadian country) and folk genres are visually rooted in personal and cultural experience. so a lot of the aesthetics that come with folk genres often will not hit with people who haven't lived that experience because they just don't understand what the markers mean.

the 2000s were super homophobic. like so homophobic. i don't know how to explain this to anyone who didn't experience it firsthand or is not from north america but men do not know how to dress here specifically because the 2000s were so homophobic. like we really made up a whole new word to politely (derogatorily) call men who knew how to do their hair and wear clothes that fit them well. yes it was that bad. and now combine that with my second point. so men wearing bright colours and rhinestones? definitely a no go. it's only now in the last few years that nudie suits have made a (semi) comeback in popular styling in the west which is i think, mostly thanks to lil nas x and post malone/his stylist cathy hahn (who, fun fact, has also done styling for orville peck. i love when things come full circle). but the reality is that the domestic environment just has not recovered enough for them to be popular internationally.

all that being said: there are still a couple of comebacks that have, in my opinion, done a pretty good job of integrating + synthesizing that golden era aesthetic. mx's fantasia, which i think everyone just forgot about? these two stages (it's the same outfits but one set in black and one in white) especially have a lot of the right shapes and ideas, and they also imo do a good job to capture the more casual/workwear aesthetic too. they then managed to do it again with rush hour, but with much more of a talladega nights bend, which is a pretty specific niche to pinpoint, but i thought it was great because it made my top styling list. and nobody is gonna like me for this but sticker maybe actually got it the best? the mv is really great and a lot of the stage styling is not exactly referential to country music in specific but is absolutely based in gaudied up old western (the genre, not the geographical area) aesthetics, which you can see here, here, here, and especially in these purple outfits.

tldr: i don't think people outside the us really understand what and where the 'country' aesthetic comes from and the prevailing us domestic disdain for the kitsch of the aesthetic and the genre as a whole means that it's not likely to get picked up directly by kpop stylists.
