Even more Stone thoughts! Like before, this contains spoilers of Sonic 3, so beware!
One thing I really wished we saw more of in the movies is a real villain Stone. Like, the Stone we se in the prequill comics and part of Sonic 1- at least, his first scene in there.
Like, this is Stone in the prequill comics:
Tumblr media
It's a far cry from the Stone we see in the movies because Robotnik isn't there. Sure, technically he's still following Robotnik's orders, but he's acting like this because he wants to.
As I've mentioned in a previous post, he's almost just as evil as Robotnik. And I think it sucks that we didn't really get that in the third movie.
Don't get me wrong, I loved seeing Stone care about Robotnik and just a bit more of their relationship, but I also wished we got more Stone. More of that motorcycle scene.
Like, Stone isn't a silly dude. He's an evil genius and I just want to see more of that. Sometimes it just feels like the movies... forget that. They'll give us one cool scene and then nothing else like that for the rest of the movie.
And sure, that has to do with how different he is around Robotnik, but I do just want more of that. He is cold and calculating and I want to see more of that. He's with Robotnik for a reason after all.
Who knows. Maybe we'll get a Stone series soon. That would just be absolutely awesome... and even if we don't, we still have fanfics. I'll for sure be writing one like I've mentioned in my other posts!
Gonna be some cool villain Stone who wants revenge! And some Stobotnik too, though that will be very much one-sided... in the beginning at least.
That's all for this time tho. Still have a bunch of Stone things I want to talk about, but that's for another time!

sonic movie 3 stobotnik thoughts:
Watched the third installment earlier today and have a lot of thoughts
Likes:
Stone being confirmed as the protector in their relationship (His action scene in the chao garden restaurant and his plea 'i'm not there to protect you!') was amazing, you can definitely tell Stone had been traumatized after Robotnik got stranded in the mushroom world and then returned only to nearly fall to his death
'I already lost you once-!' 'Unsubscribed blocked and reported.' 'I can't lose you again...' Stone you deserve the world and so much better than Robotnik i'm sorry your hearts deadset on this dickhead <3
Robotnik's first name Ivo being dropped several times and pronounced eye-vo rather than ee-vo. always preferred the eye-vo pronounciation personally, feel like ee-vo is a bit too on the nose and doesn't sound as good.
Robotnik being open enough around Stone at the very start of the movie that he casually mentions that Stone is the only person he trusts and at the very end after he thought he found loving family only to be rejected and betrayed by Gerald admitting Stone was the only one to ever truly care about him my heart can't
More of the weird kinky BDSM shit my beloved - Eggman's reaction to seeing a shirtless tied up Stone 'Do that in your own time you sicken me' sent me as did the frigging shirt snatch and of course that glorious haircut scene
Stone getting to interact with characters that aren't Eggman. Him calling Tails adorable and that short moment where he hung out with Shadow was nice to see.
Again the haircut scene. Stone had zero excuses for straddling his bosses lap and nearly strangling him in a chokehold. Firestarter by Prodigy playing was just the cherry on top.
Stone getting cucked again by Robotnik's own grandpapa. First knuckles now sour gramps smh there's always a damn third wheel
Robotnik finally finding family and just CLINGING to them (quite literally the boot kissing scene was... something.) Ivo was so desperate for Gerald's love and approval, its such a great parallel to Stone's admiration for Robotnik. Honestly it makes sense that Robotnik immediately reacted so defensively when Stone warned him of Gerald and Shadows hidden plan, like Robotnik immediately reacted by attacking Stone back by accusing him of just being jealous because he felt his bond with gerald was being threatened. Robotnik even looked over at Gerald several times while he was chewing Stone out, clearly seeking his approval.
Eggman's announcement dedicated fully to Stone after three whole movies of Robotnik taking Stone for granted and Stone being ditched berated and sidelined. Finally after feeling the pain of Gerald's rejection (that 'You're no Maria' was ice cold) Ivo in his last moments alive makes sure Stone knows he reciprocates and pays tribute to Stone's love and loyalty to him, admitting that Stone was more than just a sycophant, a tool to be used and discarded, Stone was a 'syco-friend'. my HEART
That final 'I love the way you make 'em' the delivery was so heartfelt
Stone's tearful smile after saying goodbye to Robotnik. There's a sort of sad acceptance to it like finally hearing Robotnik admit that he does care about him too softens the blow of losing him and will help Stone to move on post movie. Maybe Stone after Robotnik's death with find someone that truly treats him right. A lot of people speculate that Stone will be the big bad of the next film but I don't know, I think in an interview by Lee he said that Stone just wanted to feel acknowledged by Robotnik and in the end Stone finally got that. I feel like its a good bookend for both Robotnik and Stone's characters arcs and i'd have mixed feelings if they were confirmed to appear in the next movie; while i'd love to see more of Robotnik and Stone's twisted dynamic in the next movie, I feel like it'd sort of undermine Robotnik's final moment of humanity at the end of movie 3. Then again someone has to have made and been controlling the metal sonics we saw in the post credit scene so who knows what the next movie will bring.
Dislikes:
Stone only getting like 6-7 minutes of screen time, I would have like a few more scenes with him interacting with Robotnik Gerald and other characters to flesh him out a bit more, maybe even learn more of his backstory. I felt like this was also a problem with Maria and Gerald; both needed a bit more time to flesh out their characters. It would have been cool to see more of Gerald and Maria before Maria's death for instance.
The movie steering away from the romantic subtext that was present in the second movie (the lattes with hearts, the romantic music playing in Stone's cafe and Stone photoshopping his boss into a maid outfit) in favour of a more platonic or atleast debatable dynamic between them - Stone being sad about not being Robotnik's 'best friend', Robotnik calling Stone his syco-friend and no outright explicit confirmation from either of them was kind of sad to see. Felt like there was potential to openly confirm stobotnik in a romantic if twisted relationship, especially given the two lived together for over a year in their crab mech and were clearly comfortable around eachother, but I guess maybe the producers were too nervous of backlash to do so so they went with a more dubious/platonic angle.
Robotnik immediately treating Stone worse once he connects with Gerald :( I suppose it makes sense; Ivo now has this shiny new family connection, from his selfish perspective why would he need boring old but reliable Stone but it still was sad to see Robotnik completely disregard everything Stone had done for him - staying by his side after leaving the government, doting on him and rescuing/caring for Robotnik after the latter fell from the giant mech in the second movie (not shown in the movie only storyboards but still presumably Stone was the one to rescue Robotnik). Personally i'd have preferred it if there was a bit more conflict from Robotnik's side, maybe have Gerald manipulate him into steadily distructing Stone more and more as the movie went on.
Stone not getting a scene where he snaps at Robotnik/shows a backbone. Yes he tried to to warn Robotnik of Gerald and Shadow's real plans for the world but again that was mostly for Robotnik's own wellbeing. Stone was terrified of losing him. It would have been nice to see after 3 movies of Stone being a doormat for Robotnik Stone finally erupt and stand up to Ivo.
Stone disappearing from the plot at the climax of the film AGAIN, a reoccuring theme in the trilogy lol, Stone disappears from the plot after Robotnik tells him to ready the prototype in the first movie and again in the second, though to a lesser extent, after he was knocked out in the mech. It would have been cool to see him do a little more, maybe aid Robotnik Tails and Knuckles in stopping Gerald in some way instead of merely being a bystander.
Similarly to the second movie I feel like Jimbotnik and now Gerald were a bit TOO zany at times. Like the scene at their first meeting when they both looked at the camera and broke the fourth wall made me groan and god... the Ivo vs Gerald fight was... bad and not even in a so bad its good way way more a killing the pacing and tension way. Like why why put the jim carrey selfspank scene right after Sonic and Shadow had a heart to heart on the moon. Why.
Robotnik's overuse of modern slang also made me wince a bit... didn't like it in the second movie don't like it anymore in the third. I found some of the quips funny like the trauma dumping line but most of the times I felt the jokes were pandering too much to kids and would age badly.
No scene where Wade once again awkwardly third wheels while Robotnik and Stone be weird together again :(
THE FLASHBACK SCENE BEING CUT :'( In the leaked storyboards Robotnik was going to a have a sort of 'feelings realization' moment where he presumably contemplates why he's bothering to save the Earth. A flashback was going to appear showing the scene where Stone gives Robotnik his latte after the latter returned in movie 2, Stone in his GUN disguise rescuing Robotnik after the latter was trapped under the rubble of his mech post movie 2 and a scene where a concerned looking Stone is handfeeding Robotnik soup complete with Robotnik looking depressed in a full body cast. The final storyboard picture showed a wide eyed and concerned Robotnik clearly realizing that Earth being destroyed would mean Stone was going to die as well. The flashback and Stone's life being on the line was what would have prompted Robotnik to try to save the planet. The flashback and feelings realization scene was cut for some reason from the final film :( Think I still have the leaked storyboard images somewhere on my blog but we were robbed.
Well this got longer than expected haha, hope its somewhat coherent.

Frostbite
Max Phillips x f!reader
Summary: By all that was holy in the world, you were going to slap the ever-loving shit out of this man. Words: 1.9k
For the #pedrostoriesgift24 Holiday Gift Exchange. @almostfoxglove asked for:
* max gets reader/character for their office's secret santa (or vice versa) * office christmas party
And y'all know I can't resist Max.
Tumblr media
My Masterlist <- So much more Max stuff here y'all. I've missed him.
Rated: Teen Warnings: This is romantic and sweet and I make no apologies for that. Max being Max, however.
Tumblr media
If you had to listen to George Michael complain one more time about what happened last Christmas, you were going to cause a scene.
Looking around the room, you took some small solace that no one else seemed to be having a good time either. Derek had taken up a post near the exit, obviously waiting until just enough time had passed that he could make a break for it. Malika was on her third hard cider - if she wasn’t careful she’d be the Monday morning gossip.
And the very next day, you gave it away…
You slip your phone from your pocket as surreptitiously as possible, checking the clock. Not even 6:30, there was still the speech from the CEO, the sales award, and of course the office secret Santa to get through before you could make your escape. They always saved secret Santa for last - everyone marching one by one to open their gift from the table in the center of the room. Showing everyone the mug they had been given.
It was always a mug.
The table looked extra sad this year - filled almost entirely with bags, half of which didn’t even have a festive spray of tissue. It was the laziest possible wrapping job. Nothing more clearly said ‘I put no thought into this’ than a dollar store bag, taped shut.
You had wrapped your gift. An oblong box with a festive red bow. Inside was a designer tie - one you had been lucky to find at a local thrift store. You had no idea if your giftee would like it, he ran so hot and cold you never could tell if he even liked you. Or anybody for that matter.
“Hey there sweet cheeks, looking for me?”
Speak of the devil.
“Never.”
He sidles up next to you, all long limbs and expensive cologne. His suit is perfect; crisp navy blue with a sparkly snowflake tie. As usual he stands too close, forcing you to shift slightly sideways to avoid brushing against him.
“You tease,” he pouts with a puffed out lower lip. “You’re gonna break my heart.”
Max Phillips, rising star of the sales department. Arrogant, conceited asshole and inveterate flirt. He was handsome too, which was honestly just annoying. If someone was going to be that obnoxious, they should at least look like half a roasted ham.
“I have it on good authority you don’t have one,” you point out.
He pats his chest for a moment, giving you a wounded look. “Stacey tell you that? Don’t be jealous, baby.”
“Miranda.”
He has the decency to hesitate, eyes darting across the room before back to you. “Well, someone had to be my shoulder to cry on.” You snort at that and he grins, shifting closer again and almost backing you to the wall. “And don’t worry about them, that’s business.”
You were pretty sure whatever that was you had walked in on in the copy room hadn’t been ‘business’ but you don’t point it out. Miranda hadn’t been the same, something viscerally off about her, ever since.
“You,” he leaned into you and you felt a cubicle wall at your back, “you would be nothing but pleasure wouldn’t you?”
“We are at work.”
“Most couples meet at work.”
“We’re not a couple.”
“We’re not a couple, yet.” He takes a deep breath and frowned. “You don’t take good care of yourself.”
“Excuse you?”
It came out close to a shriek, several heads turning your direction. Max gave them a dazzlingly wide smile and as one they smiled back. Even Richard, the grumpiest at the best of times, blushed. He blushed.
“You’re not eating right.”
By all that was holy in the world, you were going to slap the ever-loving shit out of this man. He wasn’t even looking at you, eyes scanning the room while he talked out of the corner of his mouth. “Dave is doing his speech,” you try to point out but Max gives you his attention long enough to roll his eyes.
“Don’t change the subject, babydoll.”
“What subject?”
Max takes the proverbial shovel you offer. “You’re gaunt. You’re not getting the right vitamins.”
“From the man who has an ‘allergy’ to sunlight.”
The grin he gives you is wolfish. “That’s documented. I have a doctor’s note.” You can’t help the small smile and of course he notices. “There now, was that so hard? I’m being charming all over the place here.”
“Why?”
The word is a hiss of air and he blinks at you, confused. “What do you mean, why?”
“You’ve fucked half the office.” You try very hard to keep your tone too low for anyone else to hear. “Am I keeping you from bingo or something?”
Another one of those deep breaths and he leans in to you, so close you think he might actually nuzzle you. “I like you.”
You snort, turning away.
“I do.” He scans the room again before he turns, blocking your view with his wide shoulders. “Look at me.”
“No.”
“Look at me.”
“I said no.”
There’s silence for several heartbeats before he admits, “You intrigue me.”
“You’re a liar.”
“All the time,” he concedes. “But not right now. There’s something for my people, a knowing of sorts…”
He trails off and you can’t help but ask, “Your people? Wasps?”
“Something like that.”
“Max Phillips!” The call of his name comes from out of the blue.
“Gotta run, sugar tits, duty calls.”
Of course he’s won the sales award. He shakes the CEO’s hand while accepting the plaque, turning and smiling - not pausing for even a moment when he realizes no one is going to take his photo. It doesn’t stop him from playing mayor of the cubicle farm, waving at a few people before stepping to the side. You notice him looking at you and studiously avoid meeting his eyes.
The secret Santa starts and you take a quick tally of how many people participated this year. Even if half the people make a fuss about it, you should be able to leave in fifteen minutes - twenty tops.
Since Max won the award he gets to go first, picking up the box you had carefully wrapped and tearing into it with the gusto of a toddler. He fingers the silk and you swear his eyes dart to where you’re standing.
There is no way he could know you’d bought it for him. No way.
“Looks like we may have a tie for best present.”
People laugh at his terrible joke and he steps to the side, letting the next person fetch their mug. You try to be surreptitious as you gauge his reaction. Does he like it? Does he think it’s tacky? With one hand he pulls off the one he’s wearing and loops the length of red silk around his collar, deftly tying a full Windsor.
It looks good on him.
Dammit.
Your name is called and you shake yourself out of your stupor, avoiding looking to the side. The present is in a bright orange bag - not even a holiday color - and stapled closed. You reach in and pull out the small bottle.
“Iron supplements.”
There’s a small scattering of applause and you stare at the offending object for so long the new HR lady has to gently move you aside.
Iron supplements.
Your secret Santa got you fucking iron supplements.
“You don’t look happy.”
The tie you so carefully picked out mocks you. You put thought into his present - and your Santa did what? Clean out their medicine cabinet? You wouldn’t be surprised if the bottle was already open.
No, you were not happy. You were fuming.
“You look pale.”
“Shut up.”
“And you’ve been having headaches lately.”
“How would you know?”
“I told you, you intrigue me.”
Something clicks and you finally look up at him, bottle clenched in your fist. “This was you?”
“You’re anemic.”
He sounds so absurdly reasonable you barely resist the urge to kick him. “You are not my doctor.”
“Do you have a doctor?”
You don’t, not that he needs to know that.
“If you did they might tell you your iron count is dangerously low. You should get checked for an autoimmune disease.”
“I do not have an autoimmune disease.” Derek shoots you a surprised look and you give him a wide smile before jerking Max’s arm and pulling him into a supply closet. “This is not appropriate. On like a hundred levels.”
“Why aren’t you taking care of yourself?”
“It’s none of your business.”
“Tell me.”
“Don’t take that tone with me.” You shove a finger into his chest. “You may get other people to leap to your bidding but I’m not one of them.”
“I know,” he grins, “it’s fantastic.”
“Fantastic?” you repeat.
“Fantastic.” He’s faster that you expect, grabbing your wrist and flattening your palm to his chest. “Why aren’t you taking care of yourself?”
He sounds genuinely concerned and you deflate, giving in. “I don’t have the money for fresh food. I’m living off ramen at the moment, okay? I’ll probably develop scurvy soon.”
“We pay you a decent amount - not what you’re worth, of course - but market value.”
You don’t bother asking how he knows that. “My ex took a loan out in my name. I’ve been paying it off.”
“Why isn’t he paying it off?”
“Because he’s an asshole and I can’t make him do anything.”
“Want me to kill him for you?”
It’s said so casually you almost think he means it. “It’s fine. It’s only another year. I’ll be fine.”
“You’re going to get rickets.”
“Isn’t that what Tiny Tim had?”
He nods. “Yes, and you’ll be begging for a Christmas bonus just like he did, too.”
“I think that was his dad.”
“Which one did Kermit play?”
You scoff, trying to pull your hand away from him. “Have you only ever seen the Muppet version of a Christmas Carol?”
He doesn’t let you go. “It’s the only one worth seeing.”
“Max,” you say softly. “I’ll be fine. Thank you, for worrying about me. Even if this-” you hold up the supplements with your other hand “-is by far the worst gift I have ever gotten.”
He gifts you with that wide, easy smile of his. “Let me buy you dinner, to make up for it.”
“Sure you don’t already have a date?”
“I’d cancel any plans for you.” If you didn’t know better you’d say he was serious.
“Big words, don’t make promises you don’t intend to keep.”
“I never make a promise I can’t keep.”
He’s standing close, so close your chest brushes his when you take a breath. “Max…”
Tingles shoot to your fingertips as his lips capture yours. A rush of heat floods through you and you can’t help but moan when he sinks his fingers into the back of your neck. The sound he makes is close to a growl, his mouth opening and his tongue is suddenly there, licking at the seam of your lips.
Would it be wrong to climb him like a tree in the supply closet?
He apparently has the same idea, lifting you from underneath your ass with an ease that takes your breath away. Your back is pressed to the wire shelves and his hips settle between your thighs as though he’s always belonged there. Your neck arches into the palm of his hand and he nuzzles beneath your ear.
“Take your damn iron pills.”
“What?”
“Your iron,” his teeth scrape along your jaw, “and maybe a multi-vitamin too.”
You were going to slap him. Just soon as your head stopped spinning from his kiss.

Req: How do you think Charles and Arthur's first romantic dance went out? It can be a drabble or one shot, whichever you'd like! Go ham-
Ohh I love this.. I have an answer and a little one-shot for you. I got really carried away with this one,,
I think in a modern au, which is what I am assuming, for the sake of *romantic* and their *first*, it'd have to be the classic dinner date.
I like to think they knew each other beforehand from work or similar, and after some painfully obvious pining, Abby and Hosea were practically begging Arthur to just ask the dude.
I've never really thought of Charles being the type to initiate too much in relationships, being alone for so much of his life, and Arthur's probably had more experience being a ladies' man if Mary says anything, so I thought the trope fit. And with Charles being a closed book, Arthur probably didn't have any other promising ideas such as this one.
So he pops the question, to which he receives a sheepish yes. Panics a little because he was fully expecting to be friend-zoned, or a secret open-ended thing in between, and also had nothing else planned except for a place, a budget, and the time.
Of course the cherry on top is that the 'table-for-two at a warmly lit and hushed restaurant that pours champagne for hundreds' scene isn't really something familiar to either of them, so the dinner itself ends up pretty abysmal. I mean the evening is nice, and they're clicking, and it's not necessarily awkward, but they'd really just rather be anywhere but here.
Anywho. In truth, as their relationship unfurls I think Charles and Arthur would kind of stray to the more unconventional dates— hiking, camping, volunteer work, roadtrips, etc etc. It's safe to say a rich and lavish night of romance isn't really something they're super inclined to. Plus, there's just something a little impersonal about sitting across from the table from your potential lover, and these idiots have always seemed like the 'parallel play' type to me.
I hope I've embodied a lot of this in the fic well enough... sorry if it's all a bit of a spoiler!
Anywho. I hope you enjoy!!!!!!!!! It gets a little introspective like most of my works... so apologies in advance. And for reference, this is probably set in the early 2000s.
(i have this fic and more posted on ao3!)
----------
Arthur leans across the center console, trying to catch a glimpse of the apartment numbers once more. Re-checks his watch. Flips the visor down, and re-checks himself. He gives the reflection a once-over, kneading at his face, flicking back a particular chunk of hair, only for it to bounce back over his forehead. Curses, mulling over for the umpteenth time this whole affair, and steps out of the truck.
He thinks, immediately, that he should've asked earlier. In April, or something. Not December, when the sun's always further than it should be, and the truck only starts up on a prayer. It's too cold to wear something nice without it looking unfitting, but he supposes he's done okay. He wonders if Charles is any better, as if the man's ever looked bad a day in his life.
The quick jaunt to the door has his stomach flipping inside itself. He buzzes once, and twice, and considers a third time before it squeals open. Straightens. Crosses his arms before letting them down again at his sides. Thinks it better to just push them both into his pockets.
Charles is there, like he should be.
He's wearing about the same thing Arthur is, about the same thing they both wear normally, only more polished. Boots and jeans and a simple flannel, covered by a thickly lined denim jacket.
He gives Arthur a look. Something akin to amusement, maybe. Holds his gaze to Arthur's and gifts him an earnest little smile, like it's a secret just for the two of them.
Usually, he's got an inch or two on Charles, but with the man on the doorstep, Arthur's looking up a good bit. He's got one hand on the door, the other occupied with necessities, rested in the air with idle anticipation. Gaze following Arthur's every move, every frantic bout of shuffling, and fidgeting.
Arthur's chest stirs at the sight, at the tilt he keeps his neck to. He lingers on the feeling, and breaks the contact, looking over his shoulder while it settles.
It takes a second or three for him to even process that he's supposed to do something. He shifts on his heels and lets out a chuckle himself, smiling ear to ear.
"Hey," he huffs, and gazes up once more.
"Hey," Charles mimics. It makes them both laugh, the whole situation. Arthur can't seem to wipe the smile off his own face at that. He shoves fists further into his pockets, glances back to the truck, then down at his feet. Face feeling like ice, burning at the core. He's sure it's screaming quite a shade of red.
He steps back, letting Charles step onto the porch beside him. "You ready?" He asks, to which Charles hums.
They both settle in the truck. Arthur quickly fumbles for the keys before he can bear any drawn silence. His shoulders drop as the engine sputters to life, just ready to start the damned night.
He doesn't remember ever being this anxious for anyone. With Mary, there was almost a standard, or rubric for him. He knew her type well, what she fawned over in their early days. Could mold himself into it easily enough and be loved by a woman how he ought to be loved, and in turn love her the way he ought to love her.
With Charles, it seems it's flipped itself around. Some way or another Arthur'd bared himself enough for Charles to wrench that mask from him. And he supposes that is the issue, that there may in fact be nothing behind it, or at the very least, an entirely lesser man. One that would be realized, and discarded for what it's worth.
But, hell if he doesn't want it. Hell if Hosea didn't plead him for it either.
Arthur never told him about this excursion, but he plans to. Regardless if it goes well or not. The man deserves that much and more after putting up with his stubborn self. He just worries like a parent should. Arthur doesn't blame him, with how his past two relationships went. He supposes he worries too. Wonders many more chances he can take, before his heart is disciplined into something less malleable, less childish.
If anything, he is grateful that it'd have to happen now. He's felt freer, softer than he has in years. By instinct he wants to hate that, wants to beat it down before it gets a chance to blossom, but as a stronger nature, he finds that mere notion impossible the moment Charles finds him again, and shows him how easy it all is.
And Christ, it makes him sick.
They haven't even made it a minute down the road before Charles nudges Arthur, supposedly thrilled if the look on his face says anything, but with something unreadable behind it.
Arthur figures his nerves must be afire, too.
Charles turns to him, speaking low, an odd tilt of his tone, "Surprised you didn't bring me flowers or nothin'," he rests his elbow on the center console, pausing. "The girls told me about your... 'charms', as they called it."
Arthur balks, "Oh— pff. You're kiddin' me," he groans, rubbing a palm over his face.
Charles makes an amused noise through closed lips. "Maybe Ms. Gaskill just told it a little rosier than you did."
Arthur tilts his head around, shrugging. "Well... I mean, it was all puppy love back then. I ain't blamin' her none."
"Lucky I'd known before. Woulda second-guessed this whole thing."
Arthur leans back in his seat, one arm outstretched to steer, like those big rig drivers. Trying to loosen up, even if it seems unnatural. He looks at Charles, brows furrowed. "You ain't already?" Still trying to ride on the teasing, but there is genuine surprise there. He wonders if Charles wants it just as bad.
Arthur watches him open a pack of Marlboros, offering one. Watches him light both and take a drag. Voice a little more genuine, a little lower, "Can't say I'd ever," he says.
Arthur nods to that, and they fall back into silence.
The last bit of blue hour has fallen beneath the horizon, a void swallowing the road. The restaurant is further into the city. Not like neither of them really live in the city to begin with. The reviews were good enough, a little too distinguished for his taste, but he hopes there's at least some bit of casual-ness, with it being downtown.
They make it to the place, parking a block or two down. Before Charles can even think, Arthur's rushed out of the car and rounded to the passenger side. He whips open the door with a flourish and bends down with a hand out, grinning coyly.
Charles barks a laugh, turning his face away, as if he could flee the scene. "You bastard."
But Arthur persists, cheeks round with an actual smile now, still holding a palm out for Charles to take. "You ain't an exception to my romantic charms, Mr. Smith."
Charles steps out, shoving past the hand. "Sure," he breathes, face to face with Arthur on the curb, who's stood like a deer in headlights, performance quickly smothered. Charles gives him a perplexed look.
"Could use a little work, though. Face gives it away." He starts down the sidewalk.
"My— What about my face?" Arthur's pitch raises, catching up to Charles. He merely laughs in response, and throws another look Arthur can't quite put his finger on.
They reach the restaurant. A glistening tower of brick, about three stories, crammed between its larger neighbors. Arthur quickly settles in. Strides past Charles and makes a bee-line to the host, leaning across the stand. Mumbles where Charles can only hear the drawn vowels of his accent, low and grumbly.
They both follow the host like a family of ducklings. It's a lot more crowded than Arthur anticipated, or wanted frankly. He immediately begins to recognize his own askew presence, but decides not to bother.
Their seats are snug against the wall, on the second floor, with a little square table that hardly fits both their forearms, and a large window that reaches past their heads and down to their heels.
They each order a beer, in quiet agreement that they've already painted an odd portrait of themselves by wearing jeans to what is quite the esteemed establishment. There's a second of consideration before just picking the cheapest meal the place has, and deciding they'll share it.
Charles shifts in his seat. He clears his throat and takes a few sips of beer. Clearly the dread in the air has become palpable.
"Arthur, how've you been?" He says. It's blunt, and uncomfortably shallow. Arthur thinks like second nature, though with some amount of disappointment that it's where they must tread now before hitting any deep-end.
He tries his best to salvage it, anyway.
He takes a few sips himself before opening... whatever this conversation should be... and scrunches his face at the taste. Right. Cheapest options.
"Well y'know," his confidence tapers as soon as it had been mustered. "Pretty static right now. Dutch ain't sending me on any jobs lately, 'cause of the ice. Good time to—"
Charles, honest to god, giggles, though faint, waving his hand in a subtle gesture to Arthur. "We're not here to talk about work, Arthur," he sets both his elbows on the table, shifting again, like it's some interrogation. "How are you?"
Arthur sits, lips parted. He looks out from the window, then back at Charles, who stares expectantly. Then, his body suddenly rights itself, reanimating with an odd ferocity.
"Right— sorry... I ain't really connected like this, with you. Just not used to it." he pauses, "Long way from coworkers now..." he winces. "But I'm good. Not just in a shallow way, I mean. I'm real happy about this. Happy, in general. At least Hosea thinks so." he looks back out to the window, humming. "How're you holding up yourself? I know you... ain't really open up much 'round work and all."
Charles also falters, it seems, spotlight suddenly upon him. Arthur thinks the same epiphany's occurred to the both of them simultaneously. That a date does, in fact, take two.
Charles opens his mouth with a brief noise, much like a string of vowels that've been severed. He settles a little dejectedly, posture slightly shrunken.
"I don't really know what I'm doing, to be honest," he says. Avoids looking for Arthur's reaction, he barrels on. "It's just been a while since I've really... pursued anything? But I'm glad— y'know, that you are, but I'm also glad myself. Content, I think. Maybe a little anxious," he huffs and hides behind his beer again.
Arthur balks, "You?" He watches Charles perk up, smile growing, even if a little reluctant. "And here's me wakin' up 'fore dawn and starin' off half the day, I was so worried."
"We're in the same boat then," Charles says in stifled laughter. Arthur bites his cheek, stirred by the sight of it. He keeps the yarn spinning, coaxing more, slowly peeling back the layers eagerly.
The food comes, and he takes it as an opening. They share it together as planned, which could be a little tastier with the damn price of it. Not that Arthur is really paying attention.
They trade throughout the night. Little details, and Arthur learns more than he'd expected to. About Charles' mother, with sparse mention of his father. That this is both their first serious date with another man. That Charles has a sweet tooth, shyly confirmed after the pursed lips he'd given when Arthur declined a dessert. Little quirks about him that Arthur's already begun nailing into his own heart, forgetting entirely to share anything about himself until prompted to.
By the end of it, the creaky stools and odd stares all around hardly really mattered anymore. He supposes he's grateful for the experience as they walk out, and only knows for sure when they're both shoulder to shoulder on the street again. His heart stutters despite it. He feels he owes something.
"Charles. Hey, I'm uh," he stops them when they reach the truck. "Sorry if this was all kind of a bust."
Charles faces him, remnants of a smile still lingering. "What do you mean?"
"Not that I didn't enjoy it! I mean you're— it was really amazing. I loved it, I'm just kinda realizin' maybe the fancy night-outs ain't fit for us, or me for that matter," his hands stay at his middle, fidgeting with the keys, averting his gaze.
Charles looks at him even more confused. Taking a second to process that, then, his features relax in what seems to be understanding. He lends another smile, "Your company was wonderful Mr. Morgan," his voice falls back into that same timbre from earlier in the evening. "But I think you're right," he says, to which Arthur only huffs.
They settle back into the truck, silence looming over once again. Arthur can hear the rustle of fabric as Charles shifts in his seat; he doesn't feel any urgency to turn the keys.
"What about lights?" Charles asks.
"Lights?" He mimics.
"Christmas lights. Whole festival for them, next weekend. Should be near your area." He does the same move he'd done on the drive here— elbow on the console, except his head rests in his hand, and he's leant closer a great deal, wholly confident in his proposal, although Arthur can't imagine how he's already figured out the answer.
He clicks his tongue, turning the keys. "Sure," he says. "I'd love that," voice pitched and quieter, like an admission to himself.
The drive back is in contentment. Arthur feels like a wad of knots that've been untied and strewn limp on the floor. Part of him longs for more, more of Charles, more of his voice, for some odd reason. Part of him wants to just crash at his place and wake like it's been the two of them all along, but he knows he can't rush it. For both their sakes.
Dutch has always prodded him for having a pliable heart. He's never found it in him to disagree. He's starting to think he wouldn't have it any other way, though.
They reach the screen door, mirroring the position they were in just hours earlier, Charles on the doorstep, Arthur tilting his head to meet his eyes.
He sways around, air a lot colder, trying to keep his nerves about, before stilling a moment, and turning to Charles with as much coolness as he can. "What was it about my face? Said it didn't help my 'charm'?" He asks, voice breathy.
Charles squints, confused, before his eyebrows raise with recognition, a faint laugh bursting out— a small 'oh' buried somewhere between it.
He takes a breath, "You blush a lot, Arthur."
Arthur's face scrunches, "What?" He exclaims. "That ain't fair, 's just cold, Charles,"
"Mm. I noticed it that first ranch job in August," Charles offers, snuffing out Arthur's poor excuse.
Arthur turns his head to where the truck sits, trying to save the embarrassment for later, if at the cost of Charles' amusement. "Pfft. Bastard. It can't be that bad?"
"How do you think Hosea picked up on it before either of us did?" Charles supplies, still grinning.
Arthur grumbles out a string of empty curses, letting the topic go, for now at least.
A pause. The truck rumbles behind them.
Arthur inhales sharply, "Well I suppose I should get going."
"Yeah," Charles says. He rests his hand on the door handle.
"Thank you, for y'know. See you next weekend?"
Charles searches his face, eyes like palms tracing the shadowed features. "Yeah. Take care."
Arthur lends a smile in response and finds another shot back at him with a fervent sincerity. Turns around before it gets the best of him, and walks down to the truck.

Adding on some lessons from my photojournalism days before I switched majors (be glad you don't have to learn about film speeds on top of all this other stuff because adding that variable in too was OOF):
If you are able to use manual focus, that can help especially in low light when autofocus struggles to work as well. CAVEAT if you have poor eyesight, especially those of us with high astigmatism tend to mis-focus and we do it worse in low light. (This is actually what forced me to change majors - at the time autofocus was not as reliable or fast as it is now so we were all supposed to use manual focus on school projects whenever possible.)
If you are using autofocus, see if your camera will let you set it so that the focal point is ONLY using the center dot, not automatically choosing for you. Using this you can auto-meter and focus on your subject with a half-press of the shutter button, THEN move your camera for better composition before pressing the rest of the way to take the shot. Meter/focus first, then compose was a constant refrain from my professors.
Be willing to spend a lot of time in one place and keep your camera at the ready. The longer you spend the more you can start to read body language and see when something interesting is about to happen. Don't wait for the exact moment, start shooting before it and keep going a little while after the cool thing happens. You're more likely to catch what you're after that way.
If you're taking photos somewhere there's a lot of glare, circular polarizing filters are your best friend.
UV filters aren't as critical these days as they were for film cameras' sensitive parts, but they are a cheap way to protect the end of your lens from scratches and are worth having if you don't already have a different filter slapped on there.
Get those little lens cap holders that let them dangle off the camera so you can't drop them. Trust me. A lost lens cap suuuuuuuucks.
If in doubt, focus as close to the eyes of the animal as you can. That way if your depth of field is too narrow you at least have the face in focus.
Go during off hours if you can. The animals often come out to play more on the exact days that cause fewer people to go to the zoo.
Golden hour is your friend for dramatic lighting. Open shade is your friend for easy metering. Play around with lighting conditions and see what works for you and time your visits accordingly.
For composition, a lot of the principles that guide art apply to photography as well. Rule of thirds is a commonly used one, but there's also other rules like not cutting your subject off at a joint whenever possible if you can't fit the whole animal/person in frame.
Learn whether your camera can do that thing where you focus once then hold down the shutter to rapid-fire shots. Use that in excess. Digital is FANTASTIC for that where with film you used to have to be a lot more judicious with how you used your shots, since it was a lot more limited. I have gotten some amazing action sequences using the burst feature like this.
If you are using your camera's automatic light metering instead of tweaking the setting manually, keep in mind that the camera will automatically assume anything you point it at is "neutral gray" which is supposed to be midway between white and black. Some modes let you auto-meter while having the numbers adjusted up or down accordingly so it doesn't mess it up. Modern cameras are somewhat better at taking in a whole scene, but again I prefer focus using the center dot so sometimes I have to tweak the metering settings, depending on my subject and the surrounding area (snow photos can be tricksy).
Expect to have to edit at least a little in post. The goal is to meter well so you do the least amount of editing, because the more you edit the more it shows in the quality of the finalized image, but for your average DSLR there's only rarely going to be a time when you do exactly no editing once you get those files onto your computer. I usually do just the very tiniest tweak on mine to add a little warmth and fix the black levels where my eyesight forces me to rely too heavily on the automatic settings.
...I know I am probably missing a million things but that's what I've got in my brain at the moment.
Do you have any advice for photography, especially when it comes to animals? I just got a camera and I was wondering if you had any tips because I love the photographs of animals you take :)
Do the work to learn how to swap your settings around for the right exposure / f-stop / shutter speed, and practice until you can figure out it out on the fly. I will admit I’m still not good at this, and shoot mostly based on pre-set settings and vibes - but I’m getting more fluent and the times I’ve figured out what changes I needed to make quickly the in moment, it’s really improved the photos I get. I wish I had a good resource to link, but look up explainers for the “exposure triangle” to start you off.
It’s important to understand what your camera / the lenses you use can and can’t do. I like to shoot telephoto for super close-up shots, but I don’t have ten thousand dollars for a telephoto that does well in low light, so I’ve had to learn to predict when I’m going to need to swap it out for a shorter lens that can handle darker light conditions (looking at you, indoor reptile habitats). Most newer smartphones are currently better for macro photography than any lens I currently have, and easier to use for it. You can ask questions of people at camera stores, or try Reddit for super detailed discussions of specs and settings. I am incredibly lucky that I have two close friends who do hardcore hobbyist/professional level photography and let me pester them regularly with questions as I figure this stuff out.
Learn the animals, too. I get good photos without a lot of technical skill because I can predict behavior and set up for the shots that I want. So the more you know about the animals you’re photographing and how they use the space they’re in, the better chance you have of getting something you’re happy with.
Also like… just practice. A lot. Thank goodness for digital cameras and memory cards. On a normal zoo trip, I will shoot upwards of 4000 photos. I keep maybe 500 of them, unless I’ve gotten astoundingly lucky. If I’m shooting animals being chill, I get the pics I think I want and then play around with my settings and take the exact same photos again, so I can compare and learn what works best. Some things, like focusing through fencing or physically tracking flying birds across the sky, just take repetition to get fluent with.
Have fun with the new camera!!

Alhaitham and Kaveh - not 'friends' but 'roommates'
(This is a reworked excerpt taken from my Haikaveh essay! If you're interested you can check it out here or as a pdf <3)
Due to Chinese game restrictions, explicit mentions of homosexuality or overt queer references have resulted in less implicit ways of conveying queer relationships or characters. Therefore, same-sex characters in romantic relationships are assigned the platonic status of “best friend” or “friends”.
Tumblr media
As such, these restrictions can be used as guidelines in establishing queercoding within Genshin Impact. It is of note, however, that this rule does not mean that all characters who are canonically “friends” are in a romantic same-sex relationship. Differentiating between same-sex couples and platonic friends (who have all been assigned the label ‘friends’) can be done by identifying particular care undertaken to ‘style’ characters. This is done so by queercoding, as in, using taboos linked to queerness; references which point to romantic connotation; or omitting certain details which casts obscurity on the nature of their ‘friendship’.
Alhaitham and Kaveh’s relationship has been styled in this way, as although various titles have been given to their relationship status, there has been no definitive term supplied overall. Alhaitham tells the Traveller that the two are “roommates”, with Kaveh confirming this, although stating that they “used to be friend(s), but not anymore”.
Within Kaveh’s Character Stories, their history as “best friends” is a painful one of separation, which can be seen as akin to a break-up, and despite their lack of status as ‘friends’, the two share an intimate knowledge of the other that no other character is privy too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Condensing their relationship down to ‘roommates’ is an oversimplification that the narrative challenges the player to question.
This is achieved through their rapport with each other, seen within Alhaitham purposefully goading Kaveh, something which he cannot be seen to do persistently with any other character, as well as Kaveh’s unique reactions to Alhaitham, which present a side to him unlike which can be observed in his interactions with others. Additionally, the two mention the other without them present, as Alhaitham mentions Kaveh unprompted twice within the Archon Quest and once within his Story Quest, and Kaveh is prone to discussing Alhaitham with those who are aware of them living together, as Collei observes: “Seems like you always include him in the conversation, even when he isn’t here…”
When the two confirm themselves to be roommates, this is immediately followed by Paimon asking Kaveh if they are friends, to which Kaveh does not give a definitive answer too. When Paimon asks Alhaitham the same question in the Archon Quest, Alhaitham evades the question, and turns it back on Paimon, who notes that “[she] doesn’t know. That’s why [she’s] asking,” to which Alhaitham then describes Kaveh as his roommate. Although, this still is an evasion of Paimon’s initial question, Alhaitham neither denies nor confirms their friendship status. The status of their relationship is constantly called into question, for the characters they interact with, and for the player.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This casts an ambiguity over their relationship which aligns with Chinese gaming regulations in regard to same-sex couples, which in turn, points to a certain ‘styling’ of relationship which differs from general platonic friendships within the game. Where both platonic friendships and same-sex relationships can only be openly dubbed as ‘friendship’, signifiers must be present in order to differentiate these platonic friendships from the non-platonic.
Obscurity of relationship status can be used to do so – where characters are not explicitly “friends”, but are evidently tied to each other in some way, more than their assigned platonic status. Here, Kaveh and Alhaitham are irrevocably connected beyond their “roommate” status, and although they are not currently described as “friends”, they used to be, “best friends” according to Kaveh’s Character Stories, which creates a gap for interpretation.
The player is encouraged to interpret the reason for the two’s parting of ways, along with the reason for their current rapport. Although Kaveh asserts that there is a mutual “disdain” between the two, Kaveh observably talks about Alhaitham enough for Tighnari to assert: “No dinner with Kaveh is complete without a few words about Alhaitham." Rather than out of disdain, it can be surmised that Kaveh talks about Alhaitham due to the fact that he cares, as he states that the reason he has so many troubles regarding his work is because he cares so much about it.
When paralleled with his troubles with Alhaitham, being that Alhaitham finds a way to “infuriate” him every time they talk, it can be inferred that Kaveh’s approach to dealing with his work is the same as to how he deals with Alhaitham.
If Kaveh’s assertation that the “disdain” between the two of them was true, then there is no basis for him to talk about Alhaitham as much as he does. This is due to his attitude in caring about something results in him verbally expounding the problem, the same behaviour he exhibits when dealing with Alhaitham. By his own reasoning, if Kaveh did not care about Alhaitham, he would not be so “infuriate[d]” by his words.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In turn, the player can see Alhaitham’s care of Kaveh manifest in his concern for Kaveh’s wellbeing within A Parade of Providence. In this sense, the rapport the two have currently which the narrative prompts the player to question can be explained. The two hold a mutual concern and care for the other, but due to elements in their past, they cannot address this, and thus it goes unspoken. The same can be said about the explicit status of their relationship, as no canon label applied to the two can truly explain their relationship, with ‘roommates’ being a clear oversimplification of their bond, and always followed up with the question of their friendship.
Alhaitham and Kaveh’s status as ‘friends’ is disrupted, not only due to the canon ending of their friendship in the past, but also in the current narrative of the game due to this refused label. Alhaitham and Kaveh do not adhere to the status of ‘friends’, either evading it (Alhaitham) or outright denying it (Kaveh), however, their bond remains central to each of their respective narratives, so much so that their differing viewpoints are integral to the other.
Alhaitham and Kaveh have been designed so that they are integral to each other, and the obscurity of their relationship acts as a signifier that their bond is not of a typical platonic friendship.
In Chinese gaming restrictions regulating platonic bonds and romantic bonds between same-sex characters as strictly ‘friendship’, Genshin Impact can be seen to subvert this in order to queercode. By creating an obscure bond between a same-sex relationship, a bond which the game constantly calls into question, a silence has been generated as to what the status of the relationship really is. The depth to Alhaitham and Kaveh’s relationship and the unspoken nature of it alludes to the queer taboo, in that its inability to be definitively labelled generates an otherness than that of an easily understood platonic bond.

I'm assuming that since you, seaweed-water, replied to a post that's tagged #anti sterek in a pro Sterek manner, you don't mind if other people chime in, right? 'Kay. Cool. (Otherwise, if you're tired of seeing anti Sterek posts on your dashboard, blacklist the tag in question using XKit and stop deliberately going into the tag to be pro-Sterek on posts correctly tagged anti Sterek. That's just rude.)
there was a time, when the show was still airing, that *everyone* was on board for sterek, even the actors who played them. this post might enlighten you, if you're interested in reading it. if you want the tldr; jeff was setting them up in s3 to be end game by s5, but that fell out of favor when jeff realized the show would do just fine without the sterek fans (before season 4, the venn diagram of teen wolf fans and sterek shippers was basically one circle)
I watched Teen Wolf from the very beginning when the pilot episode aired back in 2011 and engaged in the fandom right when the first season was airing.
All of this is blatantly incorrect and rewriting Teen Wolf fandom history. The fandom didn't really start picking up steam until the hiatus between season 1 and season 2. Sterek didn't explode into popularity as a fanon ship until the second season. During season 1, the majority of Derek-centric ships were Scott/Derek, Jackson/Derek, and Derek/Original Female Character. The vast majority of Stiles-centric ships were Scott/Stiles, Stiles/Danny, Stiles/Lydia, and Stiles/Original Female Character. This is going off of FanFiction.Net data + my own recollections.
Was there Stiles/Derek fic written shortly after the pilot? Yeah, sure. But it didn't gain jauggernaut popularity as a ship until season 2, when the fandom gained a lot of new members through more people watching the show. (That being said, the first Stiles/Derek LiveJournal community was created two-and-a-half months after the show began airing.)
Second: Jeff Davis was absolutely not setting Sterek up to be endgame in any way whatsoever if you look at the actual show and not the out-of-universe polling and official fanwork contests. Throughout season 1, Stiles was obsessed with Lydia and getting her to see him as a potential boyfriend since he'd been crushing on her for years; Derek was completely fixated on Scott and only barely tolerated Stiles because a) Stiles is Scott's best friend; and b) Stiles kept inserting himself into werewolf business through his friendship with Scott. (Stiles also initially treated Scott being bitten as though this was some sort of cool video game he could live vicariously through his friend, even though it was inadvertently Stiles's fault that Scott was bitten by Peter in the first place, and he canonically dehumanized Scott during the latter's second full moon solely because Lydia [the girl Stiles had a major crush on but didn't give him the time of day] kissed Scott earlier that day.)
In season 2, Derek and Stiles's interactions are still antagonistic more often than not, with Stiles mistrusting Derek and Derek, again, focused more on getting Scott into his pack now that he's an Alpha while they (Scott & Stiles + Derek's pack) are forced to work together to solve the Kanima mystery. There is nothing romantic about the scene between them in the pool when Derek is paralyzed by Kanima venom & Stiles has to keep treading water a) to keep them both from drowning until the paralysis wears off; and b) to exploit the Kanima's fear of water through its master. (Both of them complain about it the whole time and hate that they're even in this position to begin with.)
Third: the "Venn diagram of Teen Wolf fans and Sterek shippers being a circle" claim is, frankly, bullshit. Sterek shippers harassed and shut down anybody else in the fandom who dared ship Stiles or Derek with any other character, let alone their canon love interests (which were, hint, not each other). They sent death threats to Tyler Posey, who played titular Teen Wolf Scott McCall, all because he expressed dislike for the ship. Sterek shippers kept harassing the actors and writers and pushing for the ship to be canon, to the point that Tyler Hoechlin in 2014 flat-out refused to sign Sterek fanart at conventions, despite accepting the Sterek fanart book in 2013.
to answer your question, it's so popular because when this show aired, it was during a time when gay characters did not have a lot of screen time. bitches were THIRSTY for gay boys on screen, and the smallest spark is enough to set anything off. it stuck because, well... the chemistry is there. the actors have said repeatedly how much they enjoyed doing scenes together. i think that really came across in their performances on screen.
Except Teen Wolf HAD queer characters from the get-go: Danny Mahealani (who is Native Hawaiian, to boot); Ethan (from the Alpha Pack, who is canonically in a relationship with Danny during season 3); Jackson was revealed to be canonically bisexual, having been in a relationship with Lydia during the first two seasons and then later hooking up with Ethan in season 6b. Hell, one of the early Stiles ships was with Danny, and Stiles' other major ship is with Scott — but Sterek shippers flat-out ignored this in favor of their white non-canon slash ship.
The actors themselves soured on the Sterek ship the longer the show went on (most of the cast flat-out treated it like a joke to begin with and never seriously acted like it was going to be canon), largely due to harassment from fans. Sterek fandom was pissed when Dylan O'Brien refused to return for the 2022 movie and still somehow managed to make a film centered around Scott, Derek, Derek's teenage son Eli, and Allison Argent (who returned from the dead) all about their fanon ship.
yes, derek is creepy... believe it or not, that is a part of it for a lot of sterek shippers. (!!just because we like to see it in fic or on screen, does not mean we condone it in real life!! same goes for age difference) yeah, derek's a fucking creep, he probably got fucked in the head when he was molested and then lost his entire family in a fire by his abuser's hand. i'd be highly suspicious if he wasn't a little weird by the time he and stiles met.
And again, the reason Derek and Stiles met in the first place is because of Scott being bitten and transformed into a werewolf. Derek immediately started stalking Scott, became a mentor to Scott, had no problems with getting up close in Scott's personal space (or Jackson's or Lydia's; this is not something Derek does exclusively with Stiles) multiple times, and eventually Scott and Derek learn how to trust each other and are on good terms from season 3a onward -- Derek is all in on supporting Scott once Scott becomes a True Alpha. That never happens between Stiles and Derek. When Derek shows up again in season 6b, he still treats dealing with Stiles more like an annoyance than anything else and flat-out says he returned to Beacon Hills for Scott McCall.
Get outside of the Sterek bubble when interacting with the Teen Wolf fandom, I beg you. The general fandom does not ship Sterek. From the Sterek fanworks I have seen, everyone is wildly out of character and I hate Sterek fandom's tendency to take Scott's--the Latino protagonist and titular werewolf--canon traits and personality + events that happen to Scott and give them to Stiles -- who is white as mayonnaise and would not at all be out of place as a potential UnSub in Jeff Davis's other show Criminal Minds, given how Stiles's go-to suggestion when investigating anything with Scott is kidnapping and/or murder.
Be so for fucking real, Sterek shippers created the “Scott is a Bad Friend” tag on AO3, which, gee, wonder why they completely flip around Scott and Stiles’s canon personalities and label the sole Mexican-American protagonist in the show “a bad friend” when in canon Scott and Stiles view each other like adopted brothers & Scott is The Most Caring Person in the whole show—whereas Stiles repeatedly mocks Isaac’s abuse, Liam’s IED, and has consistently shown he doesn’t really give a shit about anyone outside of his small circle of his dad, Scott, Scott’s mom, and whoever he’s dating at the time. (More than once he even tells Scott to leave Derek to die.)
Given Sterek fandom’s tendency to give Scott’s Red Riding Hood moment to Stiles, write AUs where Stiles was bitten instead and where Stiles also becomes a True Alpha, Stiles having this “spark” that enables him to do magic (which only comes up once in the whole show), and how many Sterek shippers openly hate Scott, just admit that the majority of Sterek fandom wishes that Stiles was the protagonist instead of Scott.
And considering how Sterek shippers crosstag to hell and back and have infected other fandoms with their nonsense to the point of pissing off those fandoms, who do not want that ship in their tag—for over a decade now—I’m convinced that a) Sterek is the Destiel of the Teen Wolf fandom (this is not a compliment); and b) there are several people engaging in Sterek fandom who never actually watched the show.
Ship what you want, but don't act like the Sterek fandom doesn't have a very real history of racism, death threats, and harassment when dealing with the larger fandom/non-Sterek shippers and people who were involved with the show itself that got them to where they are now. The (very) vocal minority does not speak for the overall fandom.
Here's some random Teen Wolf on my blog:
I HATE Sterek the ship. I despise it so much I filtered the tags. I don't think I have ever disliked a ship more. And I probably wouldn't hate it as much if It wasn't so damn popular.
I got into Teen Wolf around early 2023 so I was late to the party. I watched much of season one without really knowing how people ship Derek and Stiles so much. And guess what, I loved their scenes. They reminded me of almost like a big grumpy brother and the young very annoying brother. Or cousins like Stiles lied about. Then I learned about the AMOUNT of shipping there was (like 60,000 fics on AO3) and every scene after that was tainted for me. I'd see something funny with those two and I'd like it but I couldn't help but think, man, most of this fandom is probably using this scene to prove that a 23 year old man and a 16 YEAR OLD are in love.
How the holy f*ck did the ship between the 23 year old and the 16 year old even become so popular??? Especially seeing how they barely interact after season 3. Even in season 3 it's minimal.
Also, there is like no evidence that they like each other but people act like there is.... Like come on.
I laughed my head off after seeing this Derek x Stiles tiktok cause it was during the Void scene in Derek's house and it was like 'Derek is always protecting him'. And all Derek was doing was standing there staring. He didn't even seem that worried.
What I kinda got excited for was in season 4 and Derek got miniature, I was like okay I see, a sixteen year old Derek and a 17 year old Stiles, I can get behind this. Then Derek became old again in one episode so that was disappointing.
They don't have chemistry, Stiles is 16 when they meet, and they barely talk after season 3 or even 2. I can only think that the reason people ship them is because they are both attractive or something. I cannot see how Derek is attractive and Stiles is more cute to me but you know you do you I guess.
It's just, why is it everywhere? How is it so popular?
All the fanfictions have to wildly make them out of character to even work! Derek is also creepy, he just shows up at high schools and breaks into Scott's house. He should not be near Stiles for any romantic reasons.

what do you think mitzi’s type in men is?
hmm, this is a fun little ask! especially since her love interests, on a surface level, couldn’t be more different. we have :
zib : former long term boyfriend but not quite … they were very loose with labels, as we know from outside information and the way zib lives life in general. but despite this, whatever feelings fostered between them were intense ; enough so for him to stick around years later, resigned to a chained down lifestyle simply because he doesn’t want to leave mitzi. he’s very loyal in that sense! even if it’s not a conventional type of loyalty. we know that before bitterness seeped inbetween their bond that zib took good care of her, while also being a complete mess of a person ; someone perpetually scared whenever physical conflict is concerned and being a musically inclined man who very much treats himself as a free spirit, with a morbid philosophy and feel towards life. he’s got a major tortured artist aesthetic!! is a little gripped by melancholy and nostalgia … zib is a lot of things, and ambitious is surprisingly one of the many puzzle pieces that make up dorian zibowski.
atlas : ruthless gangster, has an eerie presence that frightens even the people closest to him. he is prone to a more quiet disposition ; never speaking and always a blot of unremarkable grey. but he is an opportunist! someone who can manage a business and take advantage of shortcuts and loopholes to become even more successful … basically he is wealthy and uses his assets well. but all of this is done with a manner of distance, leaving even those closest to him never having the full picture of who he was. it’s also worth noting that mitzi and him had eventual problems, which caused her to seperate. also perhaps has a heart of some kind, but whatever love he possesses is hidden under layers of blood and mystery.
wick : well-to-do bore, and i say this with all the love in the world for wick! but compared to previous paramours he’s rather clean and talkative … there is a constant earnestness to him that bleeds out, an honesty and a more conventional sort of kindness. he doesn’t hide behind smoke and mirrors and there’s never really a front he puts up around mitzi -- or his investors for that matter, hence why he’s treated as an ‘outsider’ so to speak. he is an alcoholic who loathes the details of his job but is more than passionate about the job itself and makes this everyone’s problem … he is a little helpless, in the sense he’d die without someone there to make sure he functions … and is, like zib, perpetually afraid of conflict. can be a little wishywashy and can come across as uncaring due to his cheeky tone … but he’s loyal and caring, with a hobby for the unusual ( bugs and rocks lol ) as well as being able to look past the gossip mill and see the actual mitzi may as he knows her, someone who’s going through a rough time and is either too kind or classy to be a brutal killer. he is hypocritical, a little snobby, and rather forward with mitzi too. kind of a flirt when he wants to be!
something that immediately stands out to me when looking at this lineup is that mitzi doesn’t enjoy a violent man. i don’t think she loathes someone who can so brutally or clinically remove others from this earth, but if she were to go for someone they’d usually be sweeter in a sense. it meshes well with her old personality and kinder heart, perhaps brings it out in her, and that sort of levity and breeziness is more enjoyable than, say, being fully aware of the dangers that lurk around every corner because the man you’re beside is prone to bringing it. she also enjoys more talkative types, someone who’s less quiet and demure and serious, and is keen on her men having a hobby they care deeply for ; some sort of long term goal to work towards doesn’t hurt either. and because of some scenes in the comic, i’m a firm believer that mitzi wants someone who can make her smile or laugh with ease, whether because they’re ridiculous by nature or genuinely funny! she has a sort of funny bone herself, enamored with gallow’s humor and darker jokes, so having someone who either a.) reacts hilariously in the face of her jokes or b.) who can return that energy with teasing or their own brand of silly is desirable. everyone could use a good laugh or two, a sense of joy injected into the bustling life they all live, and this all ties back to mitzi being more drawn towards the less stuffy types of men.
so atlas seems to be an outlier when it comes to her type in many ways, hence the later problems they apparently had in their relationship even if she did love him dearly. but, of course, atlas did have something very appealing to her that zib had failed to give, which she rather fondly recalls in the comic page vestige. whether zib likes acknowledging it or not, mitzi wasn’t as gungho about their normad life as he was or, at the very least, when she lived another life besides that one, she realized she had a preference! and atlas gave her that path, that knowledge that she wanted something else, and seemingly for the very first time in her life … she felt like a proper lady, a feeling that clearly meant a lot to her. it wasn’t just the dresses or the wealth, it was the constant eye of atlas who could have any dame he wanted, but fancied her his wife regardless. it was having someone so respectable looking, dressed well and groomed well, being able to see her as something other than a sweating, exposed girl in a bawdy dress. atlas’s seemingly polite treatment towards mitzi was enough to garner her affections in spite of everything else, so i think she enjoys that now in others, ; folks who treat her as though she’s a woman in high society, men who don’t gawk at her or make lewd remarks immediately … she probably prefers the courting process now and the quaint dates ( that she doesn’t pay for, mind you ) that come along with it. she just -- likes mutual respect, i think. and who doesn’t? she’s been through a lot to get to where she is now, even if it’s a bad predicament, and she’d like for that to amount to something. some sort of acknowledgment, some kind of recognition.
however, it’s worth mentioning that her views on romance and all that it entails have been warped since the death of her husband. such a loss would change how anyone approaches their dating life, if they were to even have one afterwards … after all, mitzi’s whole problem is that she doesn’t want to move on from atlas and has thus completely romanticized him in her head, to the point that she earnestly believes she’ll be miserable forever without his presence. any problems she had with atlas have long since been erased by her tortured mind, leaving her with a profound misery she’s wallowing in. i think she believes herself as incapble of romantic or sexual inclinations nowdays, leading her to view the advances made towards wick as a necessary ‘evil’ for the sake of atlas may and little else -- when she genuinely does like sedgewick to a degree, and wouldn’t go on dates or kiss a man unless some part of her honestly wanted to do so. ( i also think she was attracted to wick somewhat even while married to atlas, but that’s besides the point ) so this is all a rather complicated affair! she is vulnerable and weak, is too aware of herself and the criminal underbelly squeezing in closer … add this on top of her still heavily grieving and having no one she feels she can talk to, you have someone who is rather changed. mitzi is so far removed from herself and who she truly is, or was, that there’s no doubt it’s affected her type ; now she’ll settle for anyone if they’ll just help her, and even then she’d be dispassionate if romantic entanglement of any kind was involved in that relationship. it’s not something she wants right now, and honestly, it all seems scary and daunting … besides atlas, zib was the only other man she’s ever loved enough to stay around for, so she’s never faced a loss like this before. has kept zib throughout all the turmoil and changes -- so this is, as far as we know, her first major loss where it concerns matters of the heart. it’s not shocking she’s so messed up after it, especially given how fresh it all still is. all of this rambling is to say that mitzi’s a little more stingy and cagey then she used to be about love or sex, and she has a lot of inner battles to face before she can fall for someone and be sure about it. needs to thaw, i think, and she would require patience and understanding from anyone who actually wanted to be with her. mitzi could move on with time ( i do not think she’s the type of widow who’d never date again! ) but it would take quite some time to do so. well, in a world where she’s allowed / is able to heal anyway!
while her type would probably remain the same, i could see her wanting a serious relationship more than she did prior to the death of her husband. has no energy for the loopholes, or the rationalizations, or the fickle nature that can grip someone’s heart. she has matured in a lot of ways since her band days and would take comfort in frivolous things like labels and promises of a future, together, as lovers. while what she had with zib was nice and is cherished alongside the freedom to do as she pleased while on the road with the band, i don’t think she misses it. having the stability and assurance of an actual relationship, with all the hardships that come with it, would be better suited for her. as long as she’s treated like an equal of course! i don’t think she’d be keen on her partner hiding anything from her, even if it’s meant to protect her, due to where that put mitzi when atlas was killed. she’d rather know and be disgusted, or worried, or scared than to not know about something at all until it’s too late … again. naturally patience and compassion would also be of importance, as would the usual things she loves like loyalty and a passion for something in life. and while never required, she’d be happy if the person possessed even a singular musical bone in their body! she still thinks artists, particularly musicans, are sexy after all … likes the angst and brooding that comes with it, the slight flare towards the dramatics … as long as they can handle mitzi in her pitiful entirety and do, to some degree, care deeply for her and will compromise … i think she could find some happiness wherever. bonus points if she can live comfortably for the rest of her days too, lord knows she’s tired of the constant battle of hucking and bargaining.
but yeah! mitzi’s love life is vast and complex and i definitely see her as someone who is more flexible in type than other people are. though there are similarities between her suitors if you really look! anyway, i hope i was able to briefly touch upon this subject because my shipping brain loved your question and kinda went into overdrive, alas. tldr ; her ideal type is wick sable. sorry. once wick learns an instrument the wedding is back on!! … i’m kidding lol. well, mostly <3

Smegtober #4: Virtual Reality
The room is sterile, perfectly white walls unbroken by any unnecessary patterns or pictures or posters, the overhead lights blinding in their pure brightness, minimalist metal chairs sleek, hard, and cold, leaving one anxious to stand up and stretch once the session is over, and the wireless suits ready to use and laid out upon tables that are free of any useless clutter. The lifeless atmosphere is even clearer now, with the space emptied of its usual occupants and quiet except for the low hum of electricity.
It unnerved Kris the first time she was in the room alone, the only student left, but over time, she's grown used to it. It seems you can grow used to any environment if given long enough, even one that feels like it's trying to shut you out, doing its best to make you feel unwelcome.
Besides, this is the closest Kris has come to what might be called a home.
She grabs her suit and slips it on. Approaching one of the desks, she pulls out its chair; the squeak of its legs against the tiled floor interrupts the ambiance and echoes through the nearly silent place. Seated, Kris places the headset on and adjusts it so it rests snuggly over her eyes. She brings her hand up to a small switch on the device, near her temple, flips it–
“Welcome home, Krissy!” Her mother's arms envelope her within a tight, warm hug. She catches a whiff of perfume: a strong scent of jasmine. As she's released from the embrace, she smells the dinner the cook has prepared; it is Christmas Eve and she's in her family home.
Her father stands in the doorway to the dining room, a mug in hand. “Kristine,” he smiles, “How was this last term?”
“Well, we got to talk with Shakespeare again after reading Antony and Cleopatra. We saw a recreation of its first performance in The Globe, then we even discussed its accuracy with Antony and Cleopatra themselves! I wrote about it during finals and got an ‘A’ in the course.” She beams with pride as she speaks of her paper. Miss Brody had really praised her for that one.
“That's lovely, dear,” her mother replies. One of their maids had brought mugs for her and Kris, so she hands one to the latter. “And not at all surprising. You've always been our straight-A scholar.”
“That's right, Krissy. We're so proud of you!”
Kris beams brighter. The words make her feel warm in a way the short, hurried messages from home fail to do. Later, laying in bed in her dorm that's been vacated of its other residents for the holidays, this moment will ring as false as it is; she'll feel a faint shame at her indulgence. But that's then and this is now, and dinner is ready to be served. Her father will talk about his latest excavation, her mother will talk about the ads she's working on for a pharmaceutical company or a new energy drink or the most recent model of hoppers, and Kris will enjoy every moment, basking in the glow of honey-yellow candlelight.
In the classroom, Kris unconsciously shifts in her chair.

i'm very interested what ppl find to be the harder shakespeare plays and which they found to be easier. bc i was googling out of curiosity and i found a sparknotes article (link if you're curious) that ranked ten of the most commonly-read plays on difficulty and it put king lear kinda down low whereas it put julius caesar pretty high because of the politics/complicated conflicts. that kind of baffled me because julius caesar was the first tragedy i read outside of the classroom and i found it very approachable; it's one i often recommend to people trying to get into shakespeare because the plot is already familiar to most ppl and you can just enjoy the poetry and how shakespeare chooses to characterize these figures. on the other hand i read king lear a few years later in my shakespeare journey, and to be honest i still kind of have a hard time with lear. maybe i just don't connect with it on some level; i'm not sure. it's not a very tightly-organized play where the action is as centered as in the other tragedies like hamlet or macbeth. that's certainly a me thing and maybe that'll change with age. but i'm always a little surprised when i find someone's experience with the plays so much different than mine.
anyway if you're reading this feel free to reblog and tag or comment which shakespeare plays you found yourself falling into most naturally and which worlds you felt like you had to force yourself into. i'm interested in what ppl feel on this subject
#i also had a hard time w love's labor's lost for comedies. idk i just didn't connect w any of the characters tho the premise is interesting#on my inexplicable third hand: once i primed myself w the historical context to get into the wars of the roses plays i found them addictive#which is funny bc before i read them i kinda NEVER thought i'd get around to the histories#bunch of dead kings i had never heard of. i was like what care is that to me?#text post#shakespeare#king lear#julius caesar#sparknotes#that article rated cymbeline as the most difficult if you were wondering. which i think is an interesting choice#bc it's not really one of the top 10 you're most likely to be presented with#i LOVED cymbeline but it was like. the 30th play i had read. something like that lol#so clearly i was quite used to shakespeare by the time i read it. i wasn't someone who needed to psyched up to read him#(although even i can have a hard time w shakespeare still... and i have only 3 plays left once i finish this last scene in m4m)#i can't say it's a good play for a beginner to start with at all. for many reasons. but cymbeline is a great play.#a midsummer night's dream was also very easy to get into and that was the first one i read on my own#isn't it one of everyone's firsts? it's magnificent i mean. it's unmatched#and it's also one of the shortest and easiest to understand with some of the most lovely lyrical poetry#troilus and cressida was hard and i don't particularly like that one... waiting to change my mind#both t&c and love's labor's are ones i only read once and never watched in any form#so maybe i should give them another shot#i HAVE given lear a couple of other shots and i still find it kind of impenetrable to be honest#it's not that i don't understand the surface level. but i can't. idk. i can't feel much about it#by shakespeare standards
