actually, it’s kind of interesting that out of McCoy, Uhura, and Scotty, mirror!Spock chooses McCoy because he expects McCoy to know Kirk’s plans and what’s going on (I feel like it didn’t even cross his mind to try and interrogate Uhura or Scotty)
so... I guess unpopular hc again lol but I believe that Kirk and McCoy are on good terms in mirror ‘verse, and McCoy is aware of Kirk’s plans and thoughts. Mirror!Kirk isn’t secretive, actually, since he shares a lot with Marlena - he pretty much gives her the means to eliminate him, she knows all his secrets, she knows he’s basically a fraud, who’s only using alien technology to keep himself in power, so McCoy also being the one he shares stuff with isn’t really unthinkable
even the way Spock emphasize “Doctor McCoy” when speaking to Kirk feels a bit like - gonna attack and use your man, try and stop me
I feel like mirror fanfics kind of influenced my opinions about McCoy and Kirk in the MU ‘verse that I just missed this little thing before. But also my spones fixation is at fault too because for years I was like spones killing Kirk is the best kind of MU story~ So all my imagined plot lines were about that...

Star Trek TOS/SNW Prompt List
Okay, for now this is what I got, and I'm thinking maybe Ill try to make a list like this every month (???maybe?) to get my brain working. Might do another Garashir one tomorrow or after tomorrow. 🤔
Spirk are beamed down to a planet of giants
Spirk fixing a console problem from outside the Enterprise
Spirk feels their T'hy'la bond across the galaxy from each other. (Conceptualization of the T'hy'la)
Spock murders the giant Omni (The Price of Phoenix) in defense of an injured Jim.
The moment Spock mind melds with Jim (as Janice Lester) and the memories that pass between them.
Professor James T. Kirk, a stack of books with legs, teaching a class with Mitchell and Carol in attendance and Janice Lester as co-professor.
Jim takes a moment to mourn his brother, Sam, and his sister-in-law, Aurelian with his nephew Peter.
Jim fights the Gorn (SNW style)
Jim watches the Enterprise as it pierces through Tarsus IV's clouds. The crowds that are left stand in shock as well.
Trelane comes back, older (as teen personality vs TOS's young boy personality), a menace as ever. How will Spock and Kirk deal with him this time?
M'Benga in the middle of the Klingon War.
Doctor M'Benga and Doctor Chapel marry, post tmp. The Enterprise (TOS/SNW) are in attendance.
La'an mourns her Jim as the timeline switches back into place.
Omni (The Price of Phoenix) abducts Jim, on Vulcan as Spock prepares for Kolinahr hears Jim's distress. (pre-tmp) (yes, I am obsessed with this villain and the books)
Jim with his Tholian child, Bright Eyes, find themselves in Sulu's botanic lab.
Mirror Verse!Spirk meet over Pike's dead body, Uhura and Spock are aligned, and impressed with their new Captain.
The SNW crew ARE turned into bunnies, Jim, Spock, and Uhura have to care for them while they fix the problem
The Enterprise and Farragut crews team up to deal with a situation on a Greek themed planet. (SNW)
Harry Mudd and his double? is once again found doing something criminal and ridiculous.
McSpirk finds themselves in the Mirror Verse's past, an earth where Khan wins, and successfully conquers the Earth (my headcanon on why the Mirror Verse exists).
Young Jim copes (or doesn't) with his first kills on Tarsus IV, while holding young Kevin Riley.
Uhura is planning a musical, sadly many of the bridge crew decline participation, surprisingly Spock does not! He plays the music. Their show becomes a yearly tradition.
Admiral Kirk sits alone in his home on Earth, and drinks. He thinks about Spock and the Enterprise and wonders how it all went wrong.
Yeoman Rand brings new Earth trends to the Enterprise, Uhura, Chapel, La'an, and Una all try something new.
Yeoman Rand and Captain Kirk fight a group of hostile aliens, their movements are in sync. (Yeoman Rand is Captain Kirk's protégée in this prompt)
Rand, Uhura, and Sulu attempt to talk to the local parliament comprised by what looks like sentient flowers.
Future!Spirk get time displaced and find themselves on the SNW Enterprise, not knowing whether they've stopped at an alternate universe, or the past, they keep quiet on the state of future affairs. Between a living Sam Kirk, and an uninjured Pike, both Jim and Spock are stressed.
Jim hesitates to fire at the dikironium cloud creature, and loses consciousness as the creature sets upon the Farragut.
Jim and Spock, and begrudgingly Droxine, catch the view from Stratos.
The enterprise picks up a child from a dying ship. The child with prophetic powers opens a popup storybook that involves the future of the enterprise, the art style depicts a style like the tos series, and two indistinct figures of a captain and his first officer. Chris Pike watches in trepidation as the story unfolds.

this was not the best movie I've ever watched, but it was enjoyable! bc of the extremly long winded animation scenes (the flight around the enterprise; the whole journey through the nebula to v'ger) - I'm talking several minutes - the movie was much longer than neccessary though. at the end I said the plot was probably half of the movie and my dad said, deadpan, that it was exactly 40 minutes of plot, so basically a regular episode, which I somehow found hilarious.
I thought the jump to more budget plus the late 70s was nice on the eyes. as much as I like the nostalgia of tos, I could take this much more seriously (not that that's the most important thing about star trek).
spirk-wise there were some scenes worth noting, but not a lot. I only remember when kirk was so excited to see spock as he arrived and shouting „spock! spock!“ over and over again, which was adorable. and then spock tumbling out of the v'ger entrance in his ev suit and kirk catching and holding him reminded me a bit of tom and b'elanna in day of honor, so that's sweet as well. and of course spock telling "jim" about "this simple feeling" while holding hands (touch telepath and such…) when spock was lying in sickbay. it actually mirrored the scene in the last tos episode imo, where kirk (in dr lesters body) is lying in sickbay and talks to and mind melds with spock.
but in general I feel like they had very few conversations and no private ones at all in this one bc spock was not xo, which is a pity not only for spirk fans, as it's usually a tos staple!
but I had a longer train of thought about spock and kirks relationship after that - even though it's useless as they never become a canon romantic couple - and I don't feel like it wouldve really fit within the story. like they would never find a way to be together for long bc of their careers and living in different places and kirk being so non-monogamous and spock seemingly very monogamous. (even though - shocker - kirk had no love interest in this movie!) so my headcanon is that they have an on again-off again kind of situationship, with spock not being able to let go for good but kirk being unable to (and not wanting to) commit even though they have this deep emotional connection and love for one another. so anyway, per usual I thought about this way too long…
on a completely different note, leonard nimoy's new teeth bothered me immensely in this movie. they all have different voices bc they aged and the microphones are probably a different technology, but he suddenly got a noticeable lisp and this kind of asmr saliva mouth sound. ...can you tell I'm neurodivergent?
btw I'm planning to get into tas at some point, just for the fun of it. probably when lower decks has ended (which I hope is not soon).

Round 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Under Cut
Mel Medarda
she is the richest woman in piltover who left her family because she didn't agree with the way they did things (conquering and murdering). she sponsors jayce and viktor, and courts jayce, which makes people upset because, you know, jayvik. she and viktor are CANONICALLY parallels with much of their imagery mirroring the other's and they are literally the same height. and people are so weird and misogynist and racist about her. they argue she is manipulating jayce and doesn't actually love him. i am cognitively disabled and cannot explain things well, but, she is so fucking shouldered
Black woman who has a romantic arc with one of the main characters Jayce. Jayce has a best friend called Viktor and their relationship is pretty important plot wise, shown as a direct contrast to his relationship with Mel even though only one is canonically sexual/romantic. So naturally fandom as the transformative safe haven it is villainized Mel horribly coming up with theories about how instead of being a complex morally grey character she's actually evil and just wants to seduce Jayce for Evil Reasons. Since they couldn't use her as a supportive female friend with no personality, others just ignored her existence entirely or acted like Jayce would ditch her for Viktor. Majority of m/m shippers will reduce her down to her relationship with Jayce and an obstacle in the way of JayVik, ironically writing her as a far worse and less complex version of the character we get on screen. The misogyny reeks and combined with the racism? It's a pretty bad case. Only slightly mitigated due to the fact that the main characters of the show are women (and the lead is a lesbian) so thankfully the male focus of fandom is lessened as opposed to filling almost every inch. Still awful to try and search for good Mel content, godspeed girlies with taste.
She's one of the most interesting characters on the show, a rich politician, smart and beautiful and has a really complicated and intriguing relationship with the city's golden boy inventor. unfortunately golden boy has a sickly twink science partner so she gets sidetracked SO BAD
Nyota Uhura
She's Spock's canon partner in AOS, and I get it because they're not a great couple, but she gets villianized in fic so much. They constantly make her an asshole (which totally has nothing to do with her being black /sarcasm) and abusive just for the crime of dating a man headcanoned as gay. And I mean, I think Spock is gay and her being a love interest was unnecessary but still! She's cool!
Oh my god so in the Star Trek reboot she’s Spock’s girlfriend and the fandom has no idea what to do with her??? Like she is ALWAYS either such a bitch or like the mom friend? And there is so much more to her character than that? But they always break down her character AND find a quick and easy way to break up her and Spock. I’m not even mad at that but at least treat their relationship with some weight instead of just being like ‘it never mattered’. People can love multiple people throughout the course of their lives. You know that right? Just because you loved someone before doesn’t make your new love any less special. And even headcanoning Spock as gay… you realize he doesn’t need to be attracted to Uhura for their relationship to have mattered, right? Even if he confused friendship for romantic attraction, him feeling such strong friendship and openly expressing it is so monumental for him!!!
she's dating Spock, who people ship with Kirk, so fans have decided that it's horrible writing and "really, they're just defending her, the movies turned her into just a love interests," which is not at all true. The movies do so much more for her to the point that the fans who have only seen the movies think that the main characters are Kirk, Spock, and Uhura instead of the Kirk, Spock, McCoy of the original series. Also having a black women being shown as being desired and loved in mainstream media, particularly by one of the most popular characters of all time, is a good thing, not making her "just a love interest"

Oooh he did it himself, damn
I like this headcanon! This is really well thought out. Really cool read.
I totally get you about specific mirror universe headcanons, I have a LOT of ideas for both the ISS enterprise crew and the assorted 24th century gang. So much untapped potential there
I borrowed one of your tags for this reblog because I actually have my own post-mirror mirror fic to!!! It’s about Spock’s revolution of course, and I’m centering the first arc on Spock gradually gathering allies to take control of the Enterprise from Kirk as his first major action, slowly driving the wedge between them and among the crew as a whole. Only two chapters done so far, but I’m very committed to bringing it to life
I love Mirror Kirk tarsus headcanons give them to me it’s fascinating to think about what happened differently

Unexpected: Shipping Spones
and how I think it went down subtextually
Preface: I do not think they’re relationship would’ve really kicked into something more than platonic until Mirror, Mirror (I think that’s when Bones realizes he’s physically attracted to Spock but we’ll get into that later)
Miri
“Aww, you do care!” 😊😳😑
Dagger of The Mind
“Wow, I’m seeing something about you that you haven’t even told Jim... that’s kinda, really fucked up and freaky, but also elegant and beautiful?”🤔
The Conscience of A King
“Crap, okay, Jim is acting weird, guess we have to rely on eachother.” 🙄😤😑😏
The Galileo 7
“Wow, you’re an asshole but I’m also learning about your redeeming qualities?? And also I really, really don’t want to see you die?????” 🙄😒😳
*Space Seed
This isn’t a very Spones-y episode I just think it revealed to us, or even to Bones, that he finds dangerous, intense, confident men attractive. Bones’s love language is jokes and threats punctuated by genuine earnesty and he was ABSOLUTELY low-key flirting with Khan with the knife at his throat.
Return of The Archons
I don’t think Bones was aware of it while it was happening because of Landru but it’s heavily implied Spock tried to mind meld with him. I think it left a subconscious impression on Bones, and a very conscious impression on Spock that he does actually care about him. He sounds so frustrated when he says he can’t break Bones out of it 🥺
Operation: Annihilate!
I mean this one kinda speaks for itself, it is a miserable time for the Triumpverant and Bones is so, so, high empathy. To see Kirk on the verge of bursting in to tears (and he probably did tbh we just didn’t see) for the entire ordeal and seeing Spock in enough pain to show it must’ve really, really shook him. Then on top of that he has to deal with needlessly blinding Spock while testing the cure. I honestly think 90% of the time he seems like he’s teasing Spock about his differing biology, it’s that he’s actually way more angry at himself. Angry for not being able to be certain Spock is really okay and nothing’s wrong, because half the time he wouldn’t know what to look for. He cares about Spock so much that getting to a point where he doesn’t know what to do for him when something could be done, scares the fuck out of him.
Mirror, Mirror
Now this is where the steamier aspect begins. I think Bones is so absolutely hellbent on saving Mirror!Spock because he’s a bit traumatized and just cannot deal with the prospect of any Spock dying on his watch. Even if it means being trapped in a dimension where he’d have to break his hypocritical oath or die upholding it. He’s rewarded with a very intimidating, very sexy mind meld. It’s been established that Mind Melds are two way windows, Bones can experience everything Mirror!Spock is, and I think he’s surprised and intrigued by what he finds out about what’s going on under that Vulcan veneer of calm. (I also headcanon that Spones are already a relationship in the Mirror timeline but I think my point would still stand even if Bones didn’t find out they were a thing in an alternate universe).
At this point, I think Bones starts legitimately wondering if he’s missing out with what Kirk & Spock have by being so closed off with Prime!Spock. (yes I love McSpirk too, I could never pick one ship and poly rep is where it’s at! I also can’t imagine Kirk and Spock ever going without one another, they’re bond is so much deeper than friendship.)
Amok Time
It checks so many goddamn boxes!
“Wait?! Vulcans go into heat?? It’s called what?!” Playing into both his fear that he won’t be able to save Spock if something goes horribly wrong, and let’s be real, Pon Farr, as like a concept is 🔥 even if it doesn’t make a ton of sense lmao.
You’re asking me to come along to this super sacred private occasion of yours?? With your other choice being your current lover? Okay! 😳
“No! No no no no I am not going to lose either of you! Not to-fucking-day! Time to risk a diplomatic incident by faking my dearest friend’s death and traumatizing the guy I now realize I have a major tsundere-style crush on!”
“Wow, I just saw Spock emote, god I wish I could get you to smile like that. I’m just gonna pretend to not know what you guys mean by ‘minding the store’. It’s not like a thank you for breaking you out of Plok’tow and preventing you from killing the man we you love is in order or anything.” 🙄😏
Journey to Babel
I mean, everything he does for Spock’s sake this episode. Also talk about unlocking your closed-off friend’s tragic backstory! I mean, experimental medicine, alien surgery, caving with no real argument on one of Kirk’s hair brained life threatening schemes?! That’s love!
Also: prying for cute/embarassing information about your crush/SO from their parents is On Brand (Bones always wants The Drama 😆) COME ON “A teddy bear???!!??”
Also also: I’m sure there’s some serious fringe benefits to having your attractive friends confined to sickbay so that neither of them accidentally bleed to death.
Bread and Circuses
I feel as though it’s in Bones’ nature to interrogate and goad Spock about his feelings, not because he thinks Spock doesn’t have any, but he wants to see how deep they go. I think this comes from the vibe that I get from Bones that he has Imposter Syndrome and projects it onto his close relationships in times of stress. They’re both trapped in a cell together and deeply scared for Kirk. I think he’s asking:
“Do you really love Jim as much as I think you do?”
“Do I actually care about/feel attracted to you? Or do I just think I do because Jim does?”
“Am I actually capable of love? Or capable of being loved?”
“Are there really warm, decent feelings in there for me too?”
The Immunity Syndrome
This the episode I just saw all the way through for the first time (I’m watching TOS all the way through for the first time in general) and if this episode doesn’t confirm for Spock & Bones that they love each other, it sure as hell does for me.
Bones is unusually worried (even for him, we all know he gets hella agitated when Spock is hurt) when Spock feels the Intrepid die.
It feels to me that it’s not that Bones doesn’t believe Spock about what happened, he just doesn’t want it to be true. Because what does that mean Spock just went through? What does that mean for any single person to experience so much death in a single instant? He barely has the heart to deal with one at a time!
That and they keep throwing themselves in each other’s way in the professional Who Gets To Die for Science contest. We good good shit like “... good luck Spock” & “Shut up Spock we’re rescuing you!!!”
Spones is such a weird, nuanced ship that can be as painfully prickly as it is overwhelmingly, mind-bogglingly tender. It’s like the odd-couple done right. I definitely ship it to slowly increasing degrees after Miri (and not before) it’s definitely got slow burn energy. It’s not as mutual soft boy energy as their respective relationships with Kirk. They’re loving AND combative which is what makes the Triumverate so refreshing and compelling, whether you ship any of it or not. I’m not saying Bones (and Spock) don’t have their shit to work on with each other, but the work is what matters.
Anyway, Spones is good. I just wanted to get these thoughts off my chest.

First of all: I'm currently listening to the songs you added to the descriptions of Steven and Bucky and I LOVE 'em!
I would ask for Doc Roe/Legolas/Dr. McCoy, whoever you most feel like describing!
(I hope you and your stitched up hand are doing well!)
send me a character and i’ll list: ACCEPTING !
DOC EUGENE ROE <3
favourite thing about them : doc roe is another top tier favourite character of mine so i everything about him is my favourite <3 but i won't cheat & just say everything agdjfkglg so to give a specific thing , i love how roe will do everything he can to help the wounded. from running out amidst a firefight / bombings to get to them & get them out to telling off superior officers to sacrificing pieces of himself to ensure he can do his job the best he can. his dedication to that is on par to lipton & winters i feel. he was right there during the absolute worst bits of some of these men's lives , working not only to patch up their bodies but to keep them calm , talking to them & using their nicknames whenever they're wounded so those hurt know they’re in good hands & with a friend , whether they make it to aid station or not. i admire roe for that , in giving his all for the wounded & not letting anything get in his way for advocating for a patient or ensuring his patients know he's treating a man with personality & life back home rather than another number of men on sick call / list of the wounded.
least favourite thing about them : what is not to like about this man ??? agdjfkglg but seriously , the only thing i can think of would be his decision to draw away from everyone during the time in bastogne & become isolated , but honestly i can't blame him for using that coping mechanism with everything that was going on then. but he may have had an easier time of it if he didn't resist heffron’s attempts at friendships & perhaps opened up somewhat to spina , even if spina is a lower rank than him , but roe is the sort to help others before himself & continue to do so until he's used up. he's rather self sacrificing like that & that's not healthy. but again it was 1940’s so they didn't have much concept of mental health help or understanding in ways that we do today & even still today it's stigmatised so i can too see why he wouldn't be openly talking , just wish he perhaps think he had to separate himself from everyone , to create distance & choose his job as a medic over creating those tight-knit friendships as everyone else did.
favourite line : “You are officers, you are grownups. You ought to know!”
brOTP : roe & spina , roe & heffron , roe & luz , roe & malarkey
OTP : roe / heffron
nOTP : roe / winters , only because winters needs nixon & vice versa
random headcanon : back during training , a group from easy company were swapping scary stories they’d been told from where their from or ones their parents shared with them , there's all sorts being told & some overlays , but somehow they convince doc to tell one , so he tells the one of the rougarou & with his low way of speaking & lilting tone he manages to be a good story teller , he’s most likely imitating how his grandparents on his mother’s side told him it. he’s one of the only guys out of three ( luz & malarkey are the other ) to actually get everyone a bit spooked. not scared but it's definitely difficult to not think of it when a few days later they have an exercise that has them out in the swamps of north carolina
unpopular opinion : erm i’m not certain that i have any unpopular opinions on roe , hmm i don't think that i do , but if i think of one i'll come back to fil this out
song i associate with them : oats in the water by ben howard or the humbling river by puscifer
favourite picture of them :
Tumblr media
send me a character and i’ll list:
LEGOLAS <3 ( books / films )
favourite thing about them : another top tier favourite character of mine , i think you managed to pick every single ultimate favourite character in these fandoms xD that's very cool ! but back to the favourite , hmm i admire legolas’ ability to still find joy & happiness in the world even though his home has been besieged by darkness’ taint , & losses he's faced as well as the fight he's had to keep along with the rest of elves there. even during trials of the quest he was usually light & could find something to smile about. he has a lightness to him. yet he doesn't allow him to not see the reality of the situation or the quests’ weight , he is very grounded whilst being able to see the brightness that still lives in arda. he can sing , laugh , smile , & find humour even in dark times without seeming like he's clueless or ignorant or careless.
least favourite thing about them : i really don't like his characterisation in the hobbit films , but that's more due to writing than the actual character. i guess i would say least favourite hmm his prejudice against the dwarves , like i don't the elves have their sides & reasons just as the dwarves have theirs , but he really should go find it out for himself instead of just believing a long steeped prejudice & dislike. ( this is excluding the events of the hobbit films )
favourite line : “I go to find the sun!” or “How about side by side with a friend?”
brOTP : legolas & aragorn , legolas & gimli , legolas & elladan & elrohir , legolas & tauriel , legolas & faramir
OTP : legolas / gimli , although i see legolas as more asexual than anything
nOTP : legolas / éowyn , i love éowyn with faramir too much to ship this , so it's not that i hate it , just it isn't a favourite
random headcanon : legolas knows how to use a leaf as a musical instrument , by pressing it between their fingers & then bringing it to their lips to esstentially whistle against it , as do several in his patrol , during moments of downtime they try to play tunes on it & judge each other on how well it sounds or just laugh at the attempts or guess which song is being playing ( or trying to be played )
unpopular opinion : i think my unpopular opinion is in the fact i see legolas as aromantic asexual , tolkien never says that legolas gets married or has someone waiting for him back home , nor do i see he & gimli as anything more than friends. do i like the gigolas ship ? yes ! is it my canon when writing those two ? no.
song i associate with them : i love to see the wheels in motion by barry phillips or fear no darkness by adrian von ziegler or flight of the silverbird by two steps from hell
favourite picture of them :
Tumblr media
send me a character and i’ll list:
LEONARD MCCOY <3 ( tos / aos )
favourite thing about them : his dedication to his patients & profession , he will tell off the highest of admirals if it’d help his patient & he'd risk his own life / safety ensure a patient was helped like when he tended to mirror!spock’s injuries or when he stepped in to alter the course of the kal-if-fee to save both spock & kirk , no doubt he got into some legal issue with vulcan on that one. too i admire his ability to remain calm , cool , & collected under any circumstance. like when khan threatened him with a knife to treating the horta to learning he had xenopolycythemia to tending crew members he's come to know as friends & even family.
least favourite thing about them : i don't really like some of his xenophobic comments to spock , especially in tos , i know it transforms more into a banter / teasing thing between him & spock later in their friendship , but it doesn't fit his character to be the sort to try to change someone's ways to prove a point or think humans are better because we express our emotions. i know he's a gruff doctor who speaks his mind , but it just let very off with his character to have him say those things with actual meaning & intent
favourite line : “When the personality of a human is involved, exact predictions are hazardous."
brOTP : mccoy & kirk , mccoy & spock , mccoy & scott , mccoy & uhura
OTP : mccoy / kirk
nOTP : mccoy / chapel , nothing against it , it just isn't my favourite pairing , i much prefer chapel with rand more than anything
random headcanon : his fear of transporters actually comes from an accident he & some of his childhood friends had with a transporter , it all turned out fine in the end but it always left mccoy feeling a bit weird round them , then in school he learnt about all the transporter incidents / injuries that had happened & it just increased his dislike , not to mention when he got to medical school in seeing some of those sort of injuries first hand , & just being on the enterprise with all her transporter incidents it just keep piling onto it , although it means he's picked up some very good ways of coping with it , some good some not. i think that's why he's especially cranky when it comes to transports because he's nervous to hell & back so instead of being anxious , he just gets angry.
unpopular opinion : hmm again i'm sure if i have an unpopular opinion for mccoy … i can't think of any
song i associate with them : far too good by john smith , feels like home by sam tinnesz
favourite picture of them :

July 9: Star Trek 1x05 The Enemy Within
Today’s ep: The Enemy Within. Overall this is a good ep, but I don’t know that I entirely agree with its thesis, and some parts of it are so uncomfortable that they mess with my general enjoyment.
Kirk, being encouraging of his crew: “That will make a good specimen.” I like how it’s just one line but there’s such confidence about him. They have to remind you of his normal self fast because he’s split for 99% of the episode.
Sulu: “That’s nippy.” I love Sulu.
So they just find an alien dog on the planet and decide to steal it? Lol your fav is problematic Enterprise crew.
(Like how they just never explained why they sent the dog up by itself later lol.)
I forgot that it was the ore that messed with the transporter. That’s a cool idea; makes sense. Alien ore gets in your system now weird stuff happens.
Evil Kirk appears and no one sees him--that’s why you don’t leave the transporter room unattended like Kirk said!!
Honestly imagine how wild seeing this when it first aired and not knowing much about Star Trek would be. Weird new sci fi show’s been on for a month and suddenly there are two Captains!! What!?!?
Even the way Evil!Kirk touches the ship is lascivious.
Bones is a good doctor. He really does have a good bedside manner; I don’t feel like people remember this about him enough.
He also keeps brandy in sickbay lol.
This scene with gratuitously shirtless Kirk and distracted Spock... it doesn’t look anything less like a porno in context honestly. I know Spock is supposed to be distracted because he’s hearing information that doesn’t make sense but Kirk is just so obviously turning on the flirt face (aka his usual face with Spock) and he’s shirtless so... the distraction is real and multi-faceted.
Ooh, Janice is an artist! I love her little rotating mirror thing.
This scene is so terrible. Really upsets me. Surely they could have found some way to portray ‘pure selfish id’ without going immediately to sexual assault.
Evil!Kirk wears so much eye makeup.
It’s interesting to me that Good!Kirk is so obviously not the real Kirk either, right from the moment he steps off the transporter. (Not to be that person again but Shatner is a better actor than people give him credit for being.)
Spock will save the day! I know that Rand calls for him because he’s First Officer but it’s still interesting that she goes for that name over, like, security.
Evil!Kirk is also where Kirk keeps all his dramatic tendencies.
I feel so bad for Janice in this scene. “What was I supposed to do? He’s the Captain.” Anyway this is why this is still a problem.
That dog omg.
“Set phasers to stun.”
“The search party is to capture you.” Yeah, that’s hard to explain. “Hey, crew, we’re going to play a little game of hide and seek. I’ll hide first.”
Man this conversation between Kirk and Spock. Leadership is one of my favorite themes in ST and Kirk is probably my favorite fictional leader of all time okay so this means a lot to me. “You don’t have the right to be vulnerable in the eyes of the crew.”
Spock is honestly just so on Kirk’s side, at every single moment. He believes him, trusts him, knows who he is, is loyal to him, is honest with him, knows how to handle him, how to care for him.
Spock likes the dog. He likes animals, in general.
The phaser vocab is so different this early on. “Base cycle.”
Good thing Kirk has makeup readily available to cover up his scratches.
My mom suggested transporting some blankets to the planet. But what if they split into evil blankets!! (Interesting that inanimate objects DO split too though.)
I feel like Kirk tried to do a Vulcan nerve pinch there lol.
“If I’m to be the Captain, I’ve got to act like one.” Immediately goes to a shot of his evil self climbing on equipment.
Spock: I always have a point.”
Spock listing out Kirk’s good qualities: his intellect, compassion, love, tenderness. Telling, lol. A lot of synonyms for how much he loves and admires Kirk. Kirk appreciation hour.
“If I seem insensitive to what you’re going through, Captain, understand: it’s the way I am.” I love this line, it’s perfect, because it has two meanings: how I am is unemotional, which causes me to seem insensitive; but also: I go through what you’re going through all the time, it’s how I am.
“Lower us down a pot of hot coffee or some rice wine.”
Poor Kirk, so many struggles, not enough snuggles.
There’s no way people could live through those temperatures in those clothes and not die. Sulu calling for room service. I love him. (Why did they drop his sense of humor in the movies???)
“A thoughtless, brutal animal... yet it’s me.”
I have a lot of mixed feelings about the main thesis of this ep. But. I do love that Kirk’s courage is in his good side.
And so much compassion....”Don’t hurt him. Don’t hurt my evil side.”
Poor animal. Goes through such a confusing experience. Then dies.
Second Officer Spock. I’ve seen people make a big deal out of this but it’s pretty obvious to me this is supposed to mean “Second in command.” As in Kirk is the “First Officer” as the Captain and Spock is second. He behaves in all ways as the second in command, right down to making that log entry at all.
The AOS verse should have rebooted this ep instead of Space Seed (I say every single episode). I mean, STID had as a theme “Kirk learning what it means to command.” That could be tied in! Also can you imagine, two CPines? Two??
Half alien Spock.
Jim’s compassion is paralyzing him.
Aaaand we’re back on the creepy train with Evil!Kirk.
Evil!Kirk doesn’t care about the crew at all. He can make decisions fast because he only cares about himself, so there’s always an easy answer.
Of course he and everyone else looks to Spock as the authority on Kirks.
Evil!Kirk knows he’s not the dominant one here, that re-combining with Good!Kirk means a certain ‘death’ or at least... being sent back to the depths.
Spock at the transporter as if this were even his department lol.
“I’ve seen a part of myself no man should ever see.”
That flirty face he gives Spock though oml. Get a room.
Ugh Spock’s last comment was so ragingly inappropriate. Hate it. But also, read it as an expression of his own extreme jealousy because he’s definitely a jealous person. Just put through the ‘sexist 60s man’ dialogue-writer translator.
So again, I like the idea of this ep and a lot of the details but the details I don’t like are......hard to ignore.
I liked that the bad side was dramatic, selfish, confused, entitled, and it made sense that he was violent and even lustful. And I liked that Kirk had such a hard time seeing that part of himself and acknowledging it. And I do think it's a good lesson/message that we need to understand our own worst impulses and that those impulses are part of us and maybe even tied to parts of us that we need. But the implication that everyone's a little rapey and that the events of this episode necessarily mean Janice has to work for someone she knows is inappropriately lustful toward her just... are really hard for me to entirely get over.
Honestly her reaction just really makes me so sad. And it annoys me that no one stands up for her, no one says that the Captain was wrong and she didn’t deserve that treatment, “imposter” or no. I guess that's what bothers me more than that Evil!Kirk went immediately to assault, b/c the idea IS that he is lustful, violent, and completely selfish. He cares about himself, his survival, his ship, what he owns, what he deserves. Maybe it is natural he would let the power go to his head and seek out someone who he knows he could manipulate easily into giving him something he wants. Maybe it's no different in a way from stranding the crew on the planet. But no one says "hey, that's wrong what he did. You're entitled to respect from the Captain." And I wish someone had.
I recognize this was made in 1966 and I do generally give ST credit within the context within which it was made, but I am a 2020 viewer and the ep certainly hits home given, you know, everything, so... just some thoughts.
Anyway, another thing I was thinking about during the ep was that I feel like I forget that Spock has two "warring halves" b/c he's half human. Because before he put it that way, I was thinking about how the war in him is between his natural Vulcan emotions and his Vulcan teachings. But now I wonder if the whole "Vulcans are super emotional" thing might actually be quite late in the canon, and initially they were intended to be naturally "emotionless.” But basically I don’t actually know how I headcanon the human and Vulcan halves of him interacting... You’d think I would lol but my take in haicg was really... pretty focused on the Vulcanness of him. I guess I thought of the human half as more of a cultural thing because physically, emotionally, psychologically, and physiologically he appears to be primarily Vulcan.
Talking about this more with my mom, it’s making more sense to me... it is cultural and it’s about expectations. He wants to “honor his father’s teachings” and be Vulcan. But he has a whole half, a whole side of his family, with different teachings and beliefs--what to do with them? When he’s around Vulcans, they are obsessed with his human side. When he’s around humans, they see him as fully Vulcan--which is much easier for him and why he seeks them out imo--but it also is a constant ignoring of part of him he feels guilty for ignoring. When McCoy tells him to be more emotional, does a part of him wonder if he should? For his mom? But then... Vulcans don’t choose to be logical for fun. It’s for safety, it’s for survival. So how can he do anything else but follow his father? Who he also doesn’t speak to for 20 years and has a super complicated relationship with! So it’s difficult.
Anyway. That was an emotionally intense experience for this human person. The next ep is Mudd’s Women, one of the weaker S1 offerings, but still a classic as per usual.

23, 37, 49, 50 🐋
23 is here! (Long story short: a Found Family made of Noble Self-Sacrificing Idiots who go through much Hurt/Comfort is both entirely my jam, and entirely all of Star Trek.
37. Character A and Character B get into a fight, who wins?
Oh no, I have to choose the characters, too?
Okay: Vedek Bareil gets into a fight with my Complete and Utter Indifference. He loses.
You’ve included a super cute whale icon, so maybe you wanted George vs. Gracie? Gracie wins for sure. She’s pregnant, which probably didn’t make time travel any *more* comfortable. Despite not being pregnant, Dr. Gillian Taylor could probably also K.O. Kirk, and quite frankly, did, with the devastating, “I’ll find *you*.”
49. A favorite ST fic?
Everyone reading this, drop what you’re doing and read “Equilibrium” by PSW right now. I’ll wait. It’s only 150,000 words. It’s also an absolutely remarkable achievement in TOS fanfiction that is probably my favourite Trek thing ever, or at least way up there, and I’m talking canon included. Featuring: Bones being kidnapped and presumed dead! Bones actually being awesome and brilliant and facing complex moral dilemmas! Spock and Kirk trying to deal without Bones and failing in surprising ways and learning about themselves in the process! Spectacular Triumvirate feels, both apart and together! A new alien civilization that feels fleshed out and fascinating, and a layered plot that works, and a super satisfying ending with a final line that’s sure to make you smile.
Or don’t; whatever. It’s your life.
Also, for a very recent story that’s a much shorter time commitment, if you’re a fan of actually getting some resolution to the Mirror, Mirror mind meld (resolution? What’s that? We run away from continuity and dealing with feelings and consequences like men), and of Spock and Bones having character development-heavy discussions about things, read “bad luck and broken soul” by @apathetic-revenant, a good friend to this blog in general, and an all-around good writer. Great dialogue, excellent characterization; show it some love.
And who would I be if I didn’t recommend my friend and evil genius of a writer @fireinmywoods and her masterwork Palimpsest”? It’s a Meritorious, Many-Memorable-Momented Machiavellian McKirk Medical Mystery, featuring our Marvelous Magnanimous Misanthrope. (I’m sorry, I got stuck on M.)
50. A random headcanon?
I’m personally fond of the idea that, post Search for Spock, Bones occasionally torments Spock by adapting the childhood game “Got Your Nose” into “Got Your Soul” instead. Spock allows this with amused tolerance, though he occasionally muses audibly about whether the good doctor should be put back on Lexorin if this is the case.

your recent tags about your hc of why mirror spock/telepaths like to touch mccoy's mind are 😘👌
Thank you!
These are the tags for reference (re: Day of the Dove): #it also works well with my hc that mccoy can handle any type of telepathic contact but his mind is very easily influenced #and the telepaths like it #and that's why mirror spock chose mccoy #because it's easier to walk around a mind of someone who is open and sentimental (a weakness in the mirror verse though) than #someone like kirk who is stubborn and disciplined and very driven
I feel like it initially started out of spite because when I started to read spones fanfics, I didn't start with new ones, but I actually searched for old ones, so some of the first fics I've read were from early 2000s (or even earlier, one of my fave fics was written in 1988), and in the summaries and even in Tempest's manifest, it was mentioned how a lot of fans didn't think McCoy would handle a mating bond with Spock, that he wouldn't be able to handle telepathy (on the other hand some fans thought the opposite).
So when mirror!Spock was like: "I shall not waste time with you. You're too inflexible, too disciplined once you've made up your mind. But Doctor McCoy has a plenitude of human weaknesses, sentimental, soft. You may not tell me what I want to know, but he will." and also thought about the moments when Spock mind melds with Kirk, which is literally mostly just when Kirk's suffering from amnesia*** (The Paradise Syndrome) and thinking about how Kirk's mind was able to overwhelm Spock's, I decided to headcanon that Vulcans prefer beings who are not disciplined enough. It's less draining for them. (Obviously, there's also the thing where I'm biased and like McCoy/Spock over Spock/Kirk, so...)
And to most telepaths, McCoy's mind feels open and welcoming, but it also makes him easily influenced. But his mind is also exceptionally strong and he can handle telepathic intrusions.
*** Spectre of the Gun, The Enterprise Incident, Requiem for Methuselah, Turnabout Intruder aren't true mind melds in my opinion. The first three are, I guess, mind manipulations, the last one is just a touching of the mind's surface. I just like to headcanon that there are different types of Vulcan abilities and not everything is called "mind meld"
yeah... idk if it makes sense, but that's what I think

Nyota Uhura and Christine Chapel? TOS, I guess, but bonus points for AOS too because they kind of just wrote Christine out of that. *sigh*
They are adorable girlfriends. I mean, I will take literally any interpretation of their relationship because I want MOAR of the TOS ladies (Nyota, Christine, and Janice) interacting. I love them as besties, I love them as besties with benefits, and I love them as besties in a committed romantic/sexual relationship. And given canon I would have it progress that way – they get closer during the series, have a few physical encounters over the years and later in life take the leap and live happily ever after.
Extra scenes I’d like to see:
Christine opening up to Nyota about Roger Korby and how his disappearance led to her joining Starfleet – she chooses to stay, but there have to be so many complicated emotions involved (I’d also like to see this scene with McCoy so he could tell her what an asset she is)
Christine opening up to Nyota about her attraction to Spock – why does she fall for unobtainable men who hide their emotions? Uhura also flirts with Spock (flirts with having an attraction to Spock) so I think she’s a particularly good choice for this.
Any/every conversation post “The Changeling”. They are so adorable and Christine is so protective and they definitely become closer as a result okay.
Nyota opening up to Christine about her experiences in the mirror universe. As I’ve mentioned, I want ALL the conversations about the complexities of mirrors.
Nyota and Christine tribble fluff.
Christine dealing with McCoy’s terminal illness (”For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky”)
The aftermath of “Plato’s Stepchildren”. As with all trauma in Trek, I want to see the consequences and recovery.
A lot of the plot of The Motion Picture reflects “The Changeling” so I want to know Nyota’s thoughts and feelings!
Nyota and Christine mourning Spock.
Christine supporting Nyota when she’s left on Earth during The Search for Spock (I actually wrote this)
Nyota and Christine reacting to Spock’s resurrection.
Christine supporting Nyota before the trial at the end of The Voyage Home.
Christine existing after The Voyage Home.
Their retirement, to a cute loft apartment in a city.
As for AOS, I hate what they did. They imply that my Jim Kirk (who I love) has taken the role Roger Korby (who I hate) in that timeline and I prefer to NOPE. But, I love the sibling-esque relationship Nyota and Jim have so I can imagine Nyota at some point befriending Christine (through Carol I guess) and calling Jim on it and because he has an established relationship with Nyota (as opposed to Carol in that terrible underwear scene) he opens up about it and apologizes and Nyota’s like, don’t apologize to ME you goof, and then he calls up Christine and they chat and admit they were both young and silly and they get to a good place. Jim also apologizes to Carol for it taking Nyota to point out how much of an ass he was being, to both Christine and Carol. Everyone is pleased with Jim’s growth. I think I ship Christine with Carol more than Nyota in this scenario but a girls night out with the trio would be very welcome.
Send me a ship and I’ll give you my (brutally) honest opinion on it and/or write a scenario /give you a series rundown of my headcanons

Gashir. Having an actual gay couple that wasn’t just queerbaiting or “Bury Your Gays”
14. A ship you wish hadn’t been canon and why?
Odo and Kira. The whole thing was just so forced and weird and no. Just no. And Odo spending a creepily long time pining over Kira like a weirdo was so... gross.
15. Top 3 favorite alien crewmembers?
Spock
Jadzia
Worf
16. If you could steal the basic plot of an episode for one show and apply to another which would you choose?
Really any of the Mirror stuff applied to TNG. I’m so annoyed we didn’t get any Mirror Picard.
17. What role would you have aboard a starship?
If I lived in the Trek verse, why the fuck would I join Starfleet when you can travel space on your own??
18. If you had to fight a character who would you choose?

All the Pah Wraith shit with Dukat.
20. Which piece of technology do you wish existed in reality?

21. What kind of stories do you hope the new show does?
Some Star Trek ones would be nice. I don’t know what garbage they think they’re doing, but that train wreck isn’t Star Trek.
22. Would you rather serve on a starship or a space station?
Neither.
23. Favorite tropes?
I’m skipping this one.
24. Which character do you relate to the most?

Least Favourite - Sub Rosa (TNG)
30. Something you wish you could delete from canon?
Pulaski.
31. A crossover with another show/movie/book/ect, that you’d want to see?
I’d really just like Galaxy Quest and Orville to be ST Canon
32. F/M/K.
Dukat/Barclay/Pulaski
33. Whose twitter feed would you most want to follow?
Data. I think it would be endlessly entertaining.
34. What do you think *insert character*’s tumblr would be full of?
Garak’s secret tumblr would just be a lot of fashion reblogs, vague blogging shade about friends and coworkers, and odd posts that may or may not be coded spy messages (but who’s to say, really?)
35. A minor character you wish had become a main character?
Reg and Garak. They are in surprisingly few episodes.
36. A social issue you hope the new show tackles and how?
I hope the new show fucks off forever. Can it cover that?
37. Character A and Character B get into a fight, who wins?
ngl, watching anyone try to fight Data is funny af.
38. *Insert crew here* is thrown back in time to *insert time period here*, how do they handle it, which fashion trends do they pick up, who threatens the timeline the most, who is saddest when they have to leave, who is most knowledgeable, who stands out the most, ect?
Look, just watch the episode of the Orville that covers this.
39. You have to relocate to a planet other than Earth, which do you choose?
Risa
40. If you got a trek inspired tattoo what would it be?
I have two. Leonard Nimoy signed my arm and I had it tattooed on, and I also have “live long”/”and prosper” tattooed along the sides of my middle and ring ringers.

Spider Reg in Genisis was fucked up.

TOS
TNG
DS9

Well, the fact that the Eugenics wars didn’t happen would probably come as a shcok.
45. Which alien culture would you most want to live in/would feel most comfortable?
Trill maybe.
46. If they rebooted *insert show here* who out of modern day actors would you pick to play the main characters?
STOP. REBOOTING. SHIT.
47. An unpopular opinion you have?

48. Sort the crew of *insert show here* into Hogwarts houses.
I’m just going with TOS, TNG, and DS9 and I’ll do as many as I feel like.
Gryffindor - Kirk, Scotty, Riker, Worf, Sisko, Kira, Nog
Ravenclaw - McCoy, Spock, Uhura, Picard, Jadzia, Odo, Julian
Hufflepuff - Sulu, Chekov, Crusher, Data, Geordi, Reg, Jake, Rom
Slytherin - Chapel, Troi, Wesley, Garak, Dukat, Quark
