God February was supposed to be my chill month to do art and instead it’s the busiest month I’ve had in a long time

This art was done for Funguary which I originally planned to complete but stuff happened so I’m only doing the first half of it, also the colour palettes for these were made by @ultrainfinitepit

Also this was done in an older art style of mine, cause I really wanted to draw flow-y fur

at long last, after much work and determination, here are my redesigns for funguary 🍄✨

i wanted to rework these earlier designs in particular cause for the first four days I was so focused on making my fungus designs as subtle as possible so i wouldn't seem "basic" or "unoriginal", that i felt like those earlier designs ended up being a lil too subtle and ended up being unsatisfied with the final products. I wanted to make the fungus aspect of thes characters' designs more apparent, rlly make it visually clear that these are anthropomorphized fungi and not just random characters that just happen to share color schemes with certain fungi. At least thats what I wanted to achieve with my funguary designs. I think it just goes to show that a big part of embracing your art is not worrying so much abt originality and just having fun!

Also I didn't include day 3's turkey tail cause tbh i think its a rlly ugly mushroom, i personally find its colors unappealing >_< Plus the original design on its own is decent anyways so idc either way lol

anyways, the reason I put so much effort into these is that I've actually been wating to make all my fungus designs into actual oc's outside of funguary!! Idk if I'll on having a full on linear story for them, but you'll def see more content of them in the future so stay tuned ;)

Anand that concludes all my funguary content for 2024!!! Thank you all sm for following me on this challenge! It was hard at times and I def feel I could've managed my time and schedule a lot better, but I still had fun along the way, and I hope you guys do too ❤️🍄✨

Funguary #1 Mycena Subcyanocephala

Very casually dropping in an entry I did as a warm up. My brain is all fuzzy lately and I took a break from a bigger project for a week to take care of my sack of meat body IRL because my hormones are shit and I fell off the face of the earth for, like, a week, and then I couldn't get started on my larger project again. So I smashed my brain with a stick until art fell out so I could prove to myself that I still have art muscles. Coincidentally enough, I also pulverized the part of my brain that forgot how to draw humanoids until it remembered how to do that again. Percussive maintenance, if you will. (I am not actually injuring myself IRL, this is hyperbole, I promise.) So yeah, I'm probably going to be doing this super casually and probably outside of February since I have more IRL meatspace obligations that I am juggling. I may try to do one entry for each of the 4 themes to start or I may take it extra slow and do all of them at some point or other as warmups and do all the different mushrooms with their themes as I feel like it. Not officially back online yet, but I am browsing around Tumblr when I have time, so... Yeah! Cherub-inspired character to fit the theme of celestial for the mushroom Mycena Subcyanocephala. All the references I looked at showed this TINY mushroom with a singe fruiting body in the frame so I drew a cherubic sort of cyclops fairy/angel/cherub creature. Selected the mushroom because it was the first on the list so why not? The colors in the reference photos were nice enough so I figured why not? Might just draw the mushroom itself at some other time! Speedpaint here, so I can remember how I did it if I ever have to stop making art again for another 10 years. XD

I drew some concepts on notebook paper, and honestly the lips/lipstick I doodled out was a big main design element from the start, which is unfortunate because they're small in the grand scheme of the piece. The sort of digitigrade, faun-like legs were a whim, and I had my heart set on puffy pants to match that fat stem body on the mushroom, so I think a different pose might have been better because once the actual color and rendering goes down, you don't see much, if any, of the initial shape I set down. Maybe slightly more distinct colors between the skin and clothes too since that hand disappears into the pants a bit. But for something I smacked out in a couple hours, it's not bad. Especially for my first real attempt at drawing humanoids from imagination in a good, long while. (Clip Studio Paint, Gouache Brush, Airbrush, Gouache Blender, and Pencil Brush. 2 ish hours.)

Day 2 of Funguary! the Subject: the pixie cup lichen. the Vibe: weird.

Since I didn't get to do the background yesterday, I decided to do it first this time -- and it ended up all background! Some faeries playing hide-and-seek in a forest their size. It's another lesson in time management, isn't it?

I learned two things about Krita from Day 1: first, I don't need such a heavy pen for my lines — especially if I'm not gonna have time to go over it again later; second, I'm not gonna remember that and I'll be relearning it a lot. I don't expect the final products to go lineless any time soon, so I should at least have some consistency in the lines, right? Look at those black gashes. I want to fix them up before I post, and add some details to the wildflowers, but what good are time constraints if I'm making excuses to pass them by? I'm still pleased, mostly because I've worked in Krita two days in a row. Cosistency is key!

WEEK 4 - FRIENDLY - GREEN SKINHEAD MUSHROOM

Sometimes I know what I’m doing with a shroom. This is not one of those times. I wasn’t sure what to do with this shroom. So I did a bit more digging, and found out it’s normally found in Australia, so my brain went to lizards and so-

It currently a little over 1:40 AM right now, wrote my thoughts about yesterday. Mostly my anxieties.

I've had a spur of productivity and made a few drawings and some new projects.

Polished a whole minute and a half of animationi that was meant to be just 8 frames.

I still dont know how these "5 minute adventure" projects end up becoming week long polishing-and-revising-and-polishing-again things.

I see animations that are, like, maybe 4 pictures if you count the one with a hastly edited cut out stock image hand, and then i try to make something similar, but it becomes this behemoth of a project every time. Smoothing out every movement, always animating on ones, that single pixel that appears for less than 0.1 seconds looks wack, better restart the whole 20 seconds.

I have so many of them too.

Gyros animation i've been working since june of last year, Maya, Otto, Charles, Abe, Bell and Polū drawings, fanart that i never finished, stories that i never ended, animations without frames, songs without melodies, tunes without purpose and its just...

Too much.

The anxieties of not making something good enough to show the world gnaw at my core while i repeat to myself in vain that it doesnt matter how good it is.

My attention keeps jumping from one topic the other, making maybe a frame or two before stopping completelly to switch a song from my playlist but oh wait there is a message about a youtube video on why some ants start walking in circles and that reminds me of a lemon demon song called Spiral of Ants and then i go to listen to his album only to see a meme and then i scroll down for half and hour and... what was i doing again?

Still.

Progress was being made.

Frame by frame.

Block by block.

At least im glad i finished one, i am still smiling about it now, even made a bit tune to go with it.

Maybe i'll start an album of bit tunes for my animations and drawings.

Already thought of a name.

All Planes.

Gonna make the cover art after some sleep.

Think im gonna start making drawings of my characters and just putting some lore in them.

I told myself i was gonna post everyday and stopped at week 2 out of 56.

But the year isnt over yet.

Gonna start making more pixel art stuff too. Not animations, just still images.

My brain works better with motion than with drawings, so i tend to make evem the smallest of projects an animation, even if it wouldnt fit.

Also funguary, said i was gonna do it and i will.

Pulling all the courage to tackle a beast greater than my inability to draw the same design twice: Digital drawings.

Last time i used it for real was i think in halloween 2022.

Rusty is an euphemism, so im gonna start slow.

Mushroom men await my pen and paper.

But first bed.

The baddest bitch on the block!!!!! My absolute favorite piece I did for funguary, bar none. Just one of those times you're really feeling yourself and your skills and everything is FUN and then you zoom out and it's still a banger!!

Not the first time i've tried a glow effect, but the first time I really liked it and still do. Also the light pen in procreate is fucking load-bearing for me. 💖

WIPS from the Mad Science meme (prev. referred to a the New DNA Meme or “that new Deviant Art meme template I’m working on”). I enjoy looking at them with just the color; the line art is a bit chunky, so it messes with the color balance I think. Now that I’ve worked with the template a few times, I think I need to find a way to clearly label the test tube icon I’m using for eye color. The template is probably ready to be shipped out, I just haven’t decided on how I’m going to do that; I’m thinking a Google doc link so I can share the layered file but it’s CSP so I need to settle on what I’m going to do for people that don’t use CLIP but want the template. Probably a series of flattened files? I just need to figure out how to do that in the minimum amount of files/with foolproof instructions for reassembly.

Anywho, my sisters helped me sort my OCs the other night so I now have 16 groupings that I’m excited to work with~~ They’re sorted into themes based on their character symbols; so “Tutti Fruity” is also the people with fruit symbols (apple, orange, pineapple etc.), Space group has stars/moons/plants, Lisa Frank has sparkles/dolphins/clouds, etc. The images at the top are the little science experiment for Lisa Frank group (left) and Secret Garden group (right).

I think I’m going to do at least two more before committing myself... ...to funguary this year so if there’s any grouping you’re excited to see please drop me a comment because I’m in a constant state of lacking direction. I might make a twitter poll when I’ve narrowed down who I want to work on but I’m lazy & spending my energy on finding a new podcast to listen to so no promises on the poll.

I think I’m favoring Good Luck theme or whichever one has Sagiso in it for my first pick, but I’m note sure on the other. We’ll see.

Funguary is upon us and I am EXTREMELY hyped!!

I plan on doing more character design sheets than actual full works for the rest of the mushrooms, because I could not get myself to finish this one... and it’s the first one!
