Flights of Fancy
Fairies were not affected by the end of the world, or so they say. The spaces these creatures inhabited were neither here nor there after all.
A grassy hill that goes up forever until you trip and fall and find yourself by a well of crystalline water. The old woman asks you for a drink. Rings of fleshy red-topped mushrooms where the air smells dense with pollen and the sun is always on the cusp of setting. A penniless man will ask to share your rations, be sure you do. Stairs in the middle of the fields in the middle of the night with no door or walls or roof. You may climb them, if you dare, if you listen closely to the whispers, and do not mind how the stars stare back at you. You may even have your wish come true if you walk backwards down the way you came, keeping eye contact up above.
The people turned to old stories–for what more was there to lose? They came in rags, feet bound in loose ribbons, and bodies turned to slivers. They smelled of smoke and rot and grief and you could never tell if the fairy knew if it was the end of the world or not. They came the long way: parting the waterfall with an umbrella half-broken and half-open. Arriving on the full moon and wearing their dirty clothes backwards.
The ground was mossy and the air was thick with steam. A hot springs burbled endlessly, as it had since the beginning. She sits with her proud head back and black gaze slitted, eyes that have seen everything but a dawn or a dusk or a high rise built of cement. They staggered across her domain in twos and threes and stuck their feet in her springs. She is already devising curses.
Light streamed in from a skylight up above and highlighted their burns and scabs and hallowed eyes. The fairy sighs.
“Bring me my pearl necklace, please my dears. It is priceless to my heart.” She points to the halo of light within the water, and waits. The people looked on. She is both young and old, hair of twilight white and face both withered and ageless at once. The people pick up stones, and throw them.
She hisses an animal-hiss and curses their family lines. They beg. They sob. The people who have seen too much–too many dawns and dusks and rubble–and wish for the thing that fairies do. To change the people. Change them into 100-year sleepers or joyous dancers or girls that throw-up snakes. They missed snakes.
A stone cracks across the fairy’s cheek and dark blood spills across her front. She turns each one of them into birds: three blackbirds, a magpie, two house sparrows, and a handful of jays. They fly away through the skylight.

Recently I've been somewhat obsessed with the idea of Fae Court Of Law, meaning mostly legal proceedings regarding fae, fairy tale logic, and other folklore creatures, partly inspired by the vague legal show clips I see on tiktok. I think part of it is how much the stereotypical Specific Wording and Rules Loophole of lawyering resembles fairy tales where the heroine is given a seemingly impossible task that she completes through loopholing.
I love me some supernatural rules lawyering! Exhibits A through D:
The High Court of Magical Justice ruling on "The Little Mermaid"
Royal Counsellor takes on Sleeping Beauty's curse
Divorce lawyer helps out Hades and Persephone
The High Court of Magical Justice rules on "The Frog Prince", "The Golden Goose", and "Beauty and the Beast"
I think you're exactly right that this sort of take on existing fairy tales and fairy tale tropes works so well because in many fairy tales it is already present. Outsmarting powerful non-human creatures is a deeply rooted folklore plot, whether that's through being better at riddles than them, sneakily finding out their weakness, some form of sabotage, or, in the closest connection to rules lawyering, by finding the loopholes in their original agreement. This last type shows up most in "deal with the devil" type stories, but the "devil" just as often is a troll, ogre or even a fairy.
When you say Fae Court Of Law, however, it immediately puts me in mind of a Court of Law run by the fae. And if we're speaking of the Celtic fae, whether it's the Irish trooping fairies or the Scots unseelie or seelie, that is a truly terrifying prospect to me. The concept that fae cannot lie, is one of modern fantasy (in folklore fairies can be compelled to swear an oath they cannot technically break, but that doesn't mean they can never lie) and I cannot imagine a fairy court of law would be concerned with either human rights or human fairness...

Being a fairy and a witch go hand in hand for me. I love doing witchcraft because it feels magical, and I also love cozy food like vegetable soup with bread and butter that feels kind of witchy but fairy at the same time to me.

Okay but I can actually picture this as a whole book. She thinks they want her name because they don’t have one themselves. Well that won’t do so, at first, she asks for help from someone and receives a baby name book. Well THAT won’t do! This fey is an adult not a baby. Is there an adult name book? No? Well, we will just have to go somewhere else then. Que this stubborn yet sweet maid dragging around a tall, elvish being to find them a name. Billboards, libraries, posters, they look everywhere!
on a morbid note, maybe the search ends with them in the cemetery. “These folks are done with their names. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind you taking theirs.”
The fey doesn’t know whether to be frightened by this girl’s energy or flattered she went this far to help them.
Story concept: Amelia Bedelia vs the fae. There's no tricking her with confusing wordery because she takes everything literally.
"May I have your name, please? :)" "Sorry, no, it's mine and I'm still using it! :)"

Stuck on the idea of vampires as a kind of reverse fae, or like someone's twisted, perverse attempt at moulding humans into fae.
They're repelled by liminal spaces.
A vampire could never enter fairyland, not just because they'd never be welcomed, but because most of the usual entry-ways are naturally barred to them.
They can't cross running water. They can't be seen in mirrors. They will wait forever at a crossroads, unable to pick a direction to go in. They can't even step over a thresh-hold unless there is absolutely no ambiguity about whether they are welcome inside.
They crave human blood, iron and salt, but are repelled by herbs and plants. They are supernaturally prevented from harming you unless the rules of hospitality have been invoked.
A fairy may replace your newborn child with something unnatural and ever-hungry. A vampire will do the same, but with your grandmother's corpse.
The fae are typically associated, even in stories where they're the bad guys, with flourishing and purity. Vampires, even in stories where they're the good guys, are typically associated with decay and corruption.
The fae turn ancient human burial mounds into fancy halls for their courts. Vampires take ancient human castles and let them grow mildewed and cobwebbed, exchanging the beds for coffins, turning them into burial places.
Fae don't tend to live among humans, but can generally pass for them with relative ease if they so choose. Vampires nearly always live among humans, but tend to find not revealing themselves a huge struggle.
I can't think of many stories I've read where fae and vampires even exist in the same universe, let alone ones where they actively interact. I feel like their enmity is almost more inevitable than that between vampires and werewolves, however.
The rivalry between vampires and werewolves is, essentially, the rivalry between two apex predator species who share a territory. (Even in stories where the werewolves aren't actually hunting humans.)
The vampires hate the werewolves because the werewolves interfere with their access to prey. The werewolves hate the vampires either because they consider themselves aligned with humans (the prey species), or because they are also predators and the vampires are competing with them.
By comparison, I think there's some story potential in the fae finding something genuinely creepy and uncanny valley about vampires.
They're immortal, like them, but also dead. They can be beautiful, like them, but that beauty is something they actively require humans to sustain. They like to inhabit beautiful and ancient ex-human dwellings, like them, but they actively work to make those places dark, damp and empty.
Fairies who are unflappable in the face of all sorts of Otherworldly monsters, can look an eldritch horror in the eye(s) without blinking, and have never been phased yet by any human, but will recoil from even the weakest vampire.
Vampires who hate fairies just as much, but in a more envious way. The way that the creature for whom immortality is a curse is bound to hate the creatures for whom immortality is an eternity of sunlight and laughter.
Maybe their touches burn each other. Maybe vampires can't stand physical contact with anything so alive and vital. Maybe immortal fairies become ill from too much exposure to the undead.
Maybe they fight over the human population when their territories overlap. The fairy need for servants and people to make deals with, competing with the vampire need for thralls and blood to drink.
Just… fairies and vampires. We need more stories about them interacting.
