Hey y'all!
I'm very excited to share this bind! This book was made for the winner of my Fandom Trumps Hate auction via the crafts bazaar! @fandomtrumpshate
This is a tete-beche style bind where the book contains two separate fics and one is flipped upside down in relation to the other so no matter which way you hold it one of the stories is oriented for reading! The "reverse" pages with the cards are where the two stories meet in the middle. I also included a matching bookmark since the usual ribbon bookmark wouldn't make sense for this style of bind. This is my first time trying this technique (I didn't even know the name of it until I was halfway through typesetting!) But I am so happy with the result!
Fandom: Supernatural
The fics are The Glamorous Life and Hating the Weather both by Rivkat.
I just mailed it off, so I'm eagerly awaiting confirmation that they got it!

Soooo my old copy of Howls Moving Castle disintegrated itself
Tumblr media
I have an extra paperback copy but my old copy is super sentimental and I wanted to try to save it. Sooo I looked up some DIY bookbinding tutorials. I’ve been using the tutorial by Abound Bindery which has been really simple to follow. And it’s been super easy so far!
The cover pages (double sided card stock) that I cut down to size with an xacto knife:

The head and tail pieces, which according to the tutorial I’m using are optional but 1) they look nicer and 2) since the spine of my old copy is damaged, I’m hoping they’re useful to hold some of the spine together at the corners:

The end pages and end pieces are drying right now in my jerry rigged “book press” (i.e., a few of my giant Berserk volumes)
Tumblr media
very high tech I know
In the meantime I’m sketching out some cover concepts that I can iron onto the hardback cover that I’m going to start on after the glue sets 👍

anyone know if bookbinding glue works on canvas? im thinking i want to add a shield to my halloween costume next year and am trying to figure out how to attach the front
#not silm#not art#halloween#first attempt w cardboard hot glue and canvas worked fairly well but the back is kind of lumpy from the glue and the corners arent great#so im thinking of doing painted canvas on book board with binding glue to adhere it#so itll be nice and sturdy#not sure how i would attach the straps though#unfortunately im too busy to do much in the way of costume upgrades rn but for next year i have a few things in mind#i definitely want to do a cloak- i saw this nice quilted fabric at joanns that could work as an insulating/lining layer to give it weight#i really want to do fake fur trim for the Fancy Himring Cloak but ill have to find something im not allergic to#idk how to do cloak clasps but the actual sewing part should be reasonably simple since its mostly one piece#just have to attach the outer layer and the lining layer and hem the thing#for the helmet im trying to find larger brads that might work to add a rotating visor#idk how to get it to stay shut though. will probably have to adjust the angle so it doesnt keep getting stuck on my nose#and so i can actually wear glasses with it and not fall down every single set of stairs like last time i wore it#anyone know if there are like. sewing patterns but for 14th century helmets?#armor wise i might actually go with the slipper top for pauldrons#would probably be decently padded#gambeson means i need to learn how to sew shirts#so maybe thatll be a few years down the line#for the shield i have one custom heraldry and one feanorian heraldry. maybe ill make two shields idk#the cuirass is going to be harder - maybe alternate a few layers of cardboard and quilted fabric? would that get too thick tho#ive tested cardboard + heavy waffle blanket gambeson and that works pretty well so maybe just go with that#maybe a cheap bookboard layer for the top?#idk how well you can paint book board though. will have to run some experiments

🐑 Alternate Universe- Magic, Mutual Pining, Demonic possession, Furbies
Oh dear...
Alex is attending one of the most prestigious magic academies in the country, on the orders of his parents of course. Even though Laiz Fier Academy reviles even the name of the only type of magic he's ever been good at. His parents swore he'd find another specialty here, and he'd let himself believe them, like the idiot he is. He's scraping by in classes. Barely. At least he's managed to make a couple of friends and figure out how to sneak into the library stacks to find books that will actually help him hone his skills.
However, Alex realizes now there's a reason why it's not recommended to do your first summoning alone. Because, while he does manage to summon a demon, it doesn't exactly end up in the silvery urn he'd laid in the center of the pentagram.
So now he has a talking, demonic Furby to hide. One that, despite its too-wide eyes and disconcertingly smooth voice, Alex thinks he might be developing feelings for.
(Fake fic ask game!)
#legolas tag#legolas ask#julie and the phantoms#willex#so okay in my head#Alex is super good at a specific branch of magic#which usually would be awesome since he was born into a high power magical family#unfortunately the thing he's good at is demonic magic#which is.... unpopular to put it lightly#his parents send him away to school in the hopes that he'll latch onto something else with so many options to explore#that doesn't happen#he meets Luke and Julie (both music magic) and Reggie (animal magic)#and they all become friends#and they all figure out how to sneak into the stacks together#where Alex finds all the hidden away books on demonic magic#cause it's not actually Evil like people think#just... darker in source than most#Alex may fall down a bit of a spiral about his abilities and worth though#and ends up attempting to summon an actual demon to help him learn magic#but... well he must have messed up the binding part of the ceremony?#Cause he does get a demonic magic coach#but said coach (Willie) goes into the Furby Reggie got him as a prank birthday present#and well... Alex knows he should figure out how to undo it and send Willie back to Hell or wherever#but then he has to rush to hide him first before he gets caught#and then they end up chatting a fair amount over the next few days#because Alex is a world class insomniac and Willie just doesn't sleep#but Alex is kept too busy with classes and stuff to go back to the library to find the stuff to sort out the mess he's made#and if Willie knows how to do it he isn't sharing#(he totally knows but it's his first time in the human world in ages and Alex is nice and kinda cute tbh so...)#and...they become friends? And also develop massive crushes on each other?

People tend to vastly underestimate their ability to pick up a new hobby/skill. Like, being bad at a subject at school doesn't mean being as bad when you're adult 'cause at that point you have more awareness of your body and mind. Ironically, because of this awareness learning to slightly bend to the left of your usual patterns feels frustrating, but that's what you do when you learn! And adults don't have to bend as much in the beginning. There's so many people that say that they cannot draw at all but if you ask them to draw a scheme of the body the strokes would be straight and proportions would be rougly correct. There's so many people that say they're have no musical ability when they have relative pitch and a good sense of rhytm. Being bad at making clay figurine at 6 is vastly different from doing it at 34 'cause 6 year olds cannot even hold a pen reliably.
The flip side is when adults blast through the beginning lessons at a machspeed they may get bigheaded.

me, an author: i would literally burst into tears on the spot if someone bound a physical copy of one of my fics!
every post i’ve seen where someone has bound a fanfic: *the author is praising it and so overjoyed*
posts i’ve seen by other authors: man it would be so cool if someone bound my fic into a book!!
still me anyway, thinking about asking an author if they are ok with me binding their fic into a book: what if its creepy what if they hate the idea what if it makes them uncomfortable what if-

Hi! I'm a ficbinder and I'm making a collection of my favorite Saw fics for my own use (so I can reread them easily, I prefer paper). Pig on speed dial is one of them. If I share pics of the book on my tumblr, do you want to be tagged so you can see the result? I would of course link to your fic on AO3 any way. Have a good one!
oh my gosh absolutely!!
go ahad, id love a link, and id love to know the other fics you've chosen!!
