Ask Compilation: Gorp, Questionable Child Rearing, Progressive elves and some campaign lore!

As always, I apologize if your ask isn't here/ hasn't been replied to, it is unfortunately impossible for me to answer to every question I get to the extend I would like to. Occasionally I also just don't have a very interesting answer to offer 😅 and I try to avoid spamming people's feeds! But thank you so much to everyone who interacts with my stories, characters, art, and is curious about my thought process and writing! The response is frankly just as overwhelming as it is deeply appreciated, and every word of encouragement or message about how I inspired you to draw or write more of your own stories makes my day.

DU drow and Gortash had what I would describe as a "Toxic Friendship". They got along well enough, had little friend dinner-dates, drank together, superficially shared their woes in ways that benefited no one, and DU drow ultimately had a great deal of respect for Gortash - except you would have never known that by the way he treated him.

DU drow belittled, harassed, and even destroyed Gortash's property on whim alone. Every compliment was back-handed and every display of friendship was somehow sarcastic. Gortash let everything slide right off his back for reasons I like leaving obscured. Here's a particularly intense write-up I did about their relationship a long time ago that still stands. I think it serves really well to illustrate how intense DU drow could still be about his friendships.

PFFTT, I don't know why that would be a female-child only thing, but maybe that's just a colloquialism?

DU drow actually talks pretty similarly to children as he does to adults! He just doesn't set the same expectations on them. Children don't ask stupid questions because the world is still new to them, nor do their respond reasonably to everything, they also don't understand some big words or complex ideas depending on how you present it to them - he understands this and adjusts accordingly. But otherwise his tone would be the same, even with his his own child. He's that guy who's good with kids on the basis of treating them as to-be adults rather than.. Well, just a child.

The Astarion assessment is fair, LOL.

(Surface) elven kind strikes me as fairly gender-indifferent overall! And while I enjoy theorizing about how their culture has shifted over the years from exposure to "urban life", for both better and worse, I like to think this is an aspect that has remained mostly unchanged, even for elves who may have had a really mixed-up upbringing from living in a city as diverse as Baldur's Gate.

I believe Astarion (and by extension Shadowheart and DU drow) are fully aware that they read as their respective genders and that for other races, such as humans, that means something; but for them that is a different custom that doesn't really apply outside of pronouns and reproductive expectations. So, I actually believe that Astarion would be pretty indifferent to life as a woman save for occasionally missing having a dick for the obvious reasons (only to then shift back and lament the opposite, probably).

I understand if people disagree as a knee-jerk reaction, but I would say that Astarion's character demonstrates a shocking amount of self-control and emotional regulation. I went into this more in detail in an older post, but basically: the guy always brings himself down from his own outbursts, is exceptionally good at reading the room, is extremely forgiving and pragmatic, and knows when to send the jokes outside and respond to vulnerability in kind. I stand by this as more than a headcanon; it's in his actual writing and dialogue.

All that to say, I don't think Astarion would ever lay a violent hand on his own children. I also don't HC him as having endured corporal punishment as a child, hence not really having that instilled in his mind as a possible example to draw from.

I could see DU drow implementing physical punishments that he doesn't consider to be actually painful, like pulling, pinching, or squeezing a child while you reprehend them; things a parent might do because they think it's harmless. Astarion would probably be the one to say he's not really achieving anything - so it would likely be short-lived.

I DO think they would both be okay with setting up their children to pretty arduous physical labor, though, both as punishment and just in general to toughen them up. You could argue there's a way to do this that is reasonable, but they would prooobably push that line into dubious territory.

But back to your question, he can enjoy a sweet treat every once in a while! He just far, far prefers savory. Personally, I think the guy would go crazy for a panettone. Or a big sugar-powdered crepe with some berries.

I kind of flew through the Circus in DU drow's playthrough because I was SO excited to get to Baldur's gate. They were only there long enough for DU drow to make Astarion mildly pissed off during the dryad's weird love quiz.

I also somehow missed Lucretious and never got the Dribbles quest - probably for the best.

Becoming a big ol' squid seems like a deal-breaker for his character in-game - so, same thing applies here. He'd let him down gently but potentially want a friendship for as long as DU drow is still himself.

... Buuuut it would never come to that; DU drow would most likely end his life pretty swiftly if he were to turn into a mindflayer, so Astarion wouldn't have much to worry about 😬

Alas, she pretty much never crosses his mind since he has no recollection of the type of relationship they had prior to DU drow's amnesia.

Or at least she won't as long as nothing weird ever happens that potentially jogs his memory 😇

Would gender change the reaction?

Would they be aggressive, defensive, scared, indifferent, ect?

Would the type of mer species change their reaction?

What about age?

I could image that they would be heartbroken and sosoSO angry if a small child mer was put in their tank. Even more so if they were injured.

Would one of them if not both become really aggressive and defensive for the mer?

To your question.

If another Mer where to be introduced into Sun and Moons tank a lot of things could happen but first of all Sun and Moon would be concerned for the Mer. Depending on the Mer reaction theirs might change accordingly.

If the Mer is a female Sun and Moon might be a bit more careful when approaching her, females in general are very defensive. So then wouldn’t want to give a reason to feel threatened.

If it is a male thy might be a bit more open but still on the defensive.

The tank they’re in is barely big enough for the two of them having a third stranger Mer in here with them is going to cause so issues.

Age also plays a big role. If it’s an older Mer Sun and Moon would try to get as much information out of it, to determine if they should be on the look out or if they are free to let their guard down.

If the Mer is just a kid their big brother instincts would kick in and immediately tell the to take care of the kid. Asking if everything is ok, Where the little Mer comes from and how he got here.

But then they’d be confused when the kid pulls away from them and even tries to hide from them, which is a futile attempt since there is nothing to hide behind, so it just swims to a corner of the tank and curls up there.  

Sun and Moon would struggle to understand why the kid is so afraid of them. Back when they first got here, they would have jumped at the opportunity to be comforted by another Mer.

But what Sun and Moon don’t realize, is the to the kid them might look like freaks. Twice as big as any Mer the kid might have ever seen but still having the camouflage pattern from when they were kids.

It’s weird, it’s odd, it’s scary.

Thanks for your ask.

I can certainly sympathize with stumbling across content that one might find triggering. There are definitely things I find triggering that are popular tropes, especially in the TGM fandom, like age gap stories. Due to some very traumatic things in my past, these types of stories can be difficult for me.

I've found post-content filtering to be very helpful in this regard. It searches the entire post for instances of your filtered word or phrase, not just the tags. Tumblr has a great explanation of how to use it below.

While I always make sure to tag my own works accordingly so people can determine if my content is for them or not, at times I will reblog from other authors who chose not to do so. Additionally, because this is my blog, I will read and share things that encompass all parts of life, including being a mother and having a child. As someone who dealt with infertility for a long time, I find it therapeutic to incorporate this topic into my stories occasionally.

Since all of us need to curate a space on Tumblr that suits our needs I completely understand if you want to unfollow or even block me. I will never be offended.

ii.           Both Squall  &  the series itself deal heavily with mentions of war  &  its after effects. v.            I do not participate in drama. I hardly involve myself in things of that nature unless it’s truly serious. What I mean by that is if a mun actively displays behaviour that is dangerous or abusive ( displays obsessive behaviour / goes out of their way to follow or harass others, homophobia / transphobia / racism / pedophilia, etc. ), it is obviously serious  &  needs to be discussed. But other things ( miscommunication, etc. ) should be addressed privately. If you bring up issues like that about a third party with me, I will ignore it  &  cut contact.

              IF THE SITUATION CALLS FOR IT   —  I will of course make an informed decision privately  &  decide whether I will cease interactions or not. If I have a problem with someone, typically I’ll block  &  cut contact  &  I expect the same in return. i.             My Portrayal of Squall is  Demiromantic  /  Demisexual, but he is also Bi-Oriented. This means he only feels  Romantic / Sexual  attraction towards someone he’s developed a very strong bond with. A very strong connection usually comes first before there’s any sort of attraction.

ii.              My blog is a multi-ship one  &  I’m always down to try anything within reason. I love exploring all sorts of dynamics  &  giving rarepairs a try  —  they just need to be within comfort for me  &  we need to communicate ooc at least a little, but if you’d like to shoot  —  I am always open to discuss a ships potential!

Talk to me & be direct is all I ask about what kind of relationship you want with Squall — I am not a mind-reader & only hinting or vagueing, expecting me to catch on that you want to ship without telling me about it will fly right over my head otherwise.

For ships — each role-player has their own universe  &  my Muse is always faithful to whomever he’s in a relationship with. I have zero tolerance for possessiveness or jealousy shown ooc. It is a huge trigger of mine to be restricted in such a way so please be mindful of that or you will be hard blocked.

iii.             Forcing a ship is an instant way for me to cut contact  &  cease interactions altogether. Squall will not immediately jump into a ship with your muse. He will need time to get to know the other muse, even if they are someone he’s generally paired with. Portrayals won’t always click, so unless it’s been discussed  &  plotted in private beforehand, I won’t jump in right off the bat. Shipping is lovely! I adore it! But it’s never going to be a main priority of mine. I will treat each interaction as purely platonic unless the other mun has talked to me. I am also going to start being more selective when it comes to shipping him romantically; if you want to ship?

Please show me by being willing to put in the appropriate effort & work & actually communicate & plot with me. I don't just want Squall to be a ship that is added to a collection.

iv.            I want to also state that Squall is always open for all kinds of ships, not just Romantic ones! As your tired local Aromantic, I highly value Platonic relationships so, if you wanted to write that kind of dynamic with him? I would absolutely adore exploring it. Keeping tabs on my activity is a huge trigger of mine from bad past instances  &  is a sure fire way to get hard blocked with no warning if it is practiced.

ii.            I do not tolerate theft / stealing of any sort. There is a difference between ‘being inspired’  &  ripping something off near word for word. People work hard on their muses, so theft of headcanons, verses, graphics / aesthetics, etc. will be reason enough for me to cut contact abruptly.

iii.             For personal reasons, I am incredibly uncomfortable with self-insert characters. I will not interact with self-insert characters.

iv.            I AM NOT MY MUSE. MUN DOES NOT EQUAL MUSE. Please do not talk to me ooc like I am my muse at any point please. Once again, bad instances in the past have made this a highly uncomfortable issue for me that I need to have written out  &  reminded just in case.

i.           The best way to interact  &  get muses writing together is through Askmemes! It helps me get a good feel of our muses, on whether their dynamic works or they mesh well or not. Plotting generally happens once there’s more of a solid dynamic built to build off of.

ii.            All of my threads are considered Closed Threads with the tagged muse / mun unless it’s stated to be an Open Starter / Thread. Please don’t reblog RP threads of mine unless you are my RP partner. Solo Drabbles where I’m writing alone are fine to like, but I am uncomfortable with them being reblogged unless permission beforehand has been given to do so.

iii.           I do have a Dis.cord, but I tend to keep that to close Mutuals only. But if we have a fair amount of threads / interactions together  &  there is an interest or it’s easier for you, I don’t mind being asked for it.
