hi, all, i grew up on a farm and i gotta tell you, it's a load of shit. it's hard work that breaks the body, and it's a precarious existence. one bad harvest could make you lose everything, and that's happening a lot. this is true of any kind of ranch or farm, subsistence or not.

also, pastoral/agrarian societies are not lost in the past. they're here in the present, only they're outside of most modern society's awareness. they're mostly in what the media calls "developing countries", and to anyone who romanticizes that life, i encourage you to go visit these countries, as i have, and see how they live, often without running water or electricity, much less internet or air conditioning, and never really enough to eat. (which is how i lived for two years in a Georgia swamp in the 90s and guess what? it fucking sucked.)

IF NOTHIN ELSE understand this: the majority of subsistence farmers around the world have insufficient access to food.

there's a lot that bothers me about all this romanticization. there's the obvious disconnect between production and consumption and between humans and nature that allows pretty pictures of Farmtown, USA to be present in the mind's eye without the smell of shit in the nose.

there's the historical fact that this agrarian utopian nonsense is where fascism starts. oh, yeah, the fascism. be careful what you want to RETVRN to and why.

there's the underlying rejection of cities, which is itself a rejection of civilization. without these cities full of sewage and sin, we wouldn't be arguing about this on the internet because the internet wouldn't exist, because the ultimate logic of rejecting civilization is to crawl back into the cave. what did cavemen do to treat cancer or diabetes? they got sick too, and they suffered and died. but in a city with a hospital and a university system and streets and ambulances and waste management and people who's job it is to cook for special dietary needs, we suffer a little less before we die.

there's the ignorance and arrogance that you, the tumblr/twitter/tiktok scroller, think you could even begin to manage a farm successfully without the necessary years of experience and generational knowledge built up and handed down. just the utter disrespect you show to billions of people around this world that live desperately and tenaciously. you really think you can just put potatoes in the ground and live? remember: THE MAJORITY OF SUBSISTENCE FARMERS WORLDWIDE HAVE INSUFFICIENT ACCESS TO FOOD.

so, take a suggestion from this former farmboy: go outside and touch some concrete. roam around your neighborhood, if you can, and fall in love with the city. that's where the good stuff is.

tbh gil's design doesnt change that much, mostly it just excludes some of his more "dark prince" outfit choices [but in canon he mostly wears those after the time skip anyway so] i want everyones a little touch of whose role theyre in so i gave him a lil of agatha's signature green around the collar

aggie<333 since she has the tarvek role in this au i included some extra doses of his red in her outfit. i used her vol 14 train clothes and professoressa's "heterodyne" costume from the mechanicsburg solstice story as references, since those are the two examples we have of mechanicsburgers providing agatha w fancy clothes so they provide my best info on what mechanicsburg traditional/folk dress looks like. i mixed in a bit of a western silhouette bc even tho in this au the empire doesnt control mechanicsburg the empire prolly still has some general social influence like if all its nobles dress a certain way it would influence how people in general dress [and i think the house of valois would go for more of a french look bc see rule #1] also im just a sucker for the leg o'mutton sleeves. theyre fun!

zeetha who should logically be the kb of this au but i refuse to kill her bc shes my girl!!!!!!! i love zeetha so much. since in this au the yajeena invaded europa instead of the other, zeetha has to hide that she's skifandrian while traveling, so hair covered and quata'aras wrapped up. since she's not traveling with the circus i wanted her clothes to have a more scavenged look to them, so she's wearin pants too big and an airman shirt w the sleeves ripped off [very jägercore] [and i have made sturmvarous airman uniforms blue w narrow white stripes rather than the even red and white of wulfenbach uniforms as another indicator of how different this timeline is]. and as tribute to her kinda taking on von zinzer's role i gave her his pants

Version 1.2 Release

Hey everyone, I'm here to announce that Version 1.2 is up now!!

There are two important things I would like to say considering the new DDD app within it, Sinistr (aka Devildom Tumblr/Twitter).

Unfortunately, due persistent bugs, I have had to disable the likes function for this update. Once it is fixed, I will re-enable it so you can gain intimacy by liking characters' posts.

Additionally, though the reply function works mostly as intended, it is slightly janky - when you click to reply to a post, the 3 reply options only ever appear at the very topmost post. Other than that, clicking your reply does reply to the intended post. Please feel free to ask/clarify if anything is behaving weirdly, and I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

However there is also good news! I've added some commonly requested QoLs this update, and the biggest one is not having to restart every time there is a new update. Please restart for 1.2 to allow all the system overhauls to function, but beyond today it will not be necessary to restart anymore like in the past. You will be able to use save files as intended for new versions.

And that about covers it; thank you so much for the support as always! The team and I really worked hard to try and give as much content as possible! 💞💞

Love and Deepspace LI and MC Fragrance Headcanons from a Candle/Perfume Maker

Have had this thread pinned on my Twitter for a bit and thought I might as well bring it over here.

Once upon a time, I used to make candles and body sprays based on characters from various IPs. I unfortunately had to give that business up for a multitude of reasons, but mixing fragrances is still very much a passion of mine, so when I get into LaDS, I of course started thinking about fragrances for them.

That said, I also had the thought that I wanted to do what each of the LI's smell like as well as perfumes I think each of the LI's would like to smell on their MC's. So when I came across this tweet from Meg a while back, I QRT with my idea dump, which is below!

Zayne

Slate/Black Ice, Pine, Jasmine, Sandalwood, Palo Santo, a tiny hint of Peppermint Patty for mintiness and sweetness, and a hint of Patchouli

Going for a cold earthiness, like a frozen winter forest, but Men's Cologne edition. I actually started mixing this one lol

Zayne's MC

Sweet Jasmine, White Tea, a hint of Pear, Vanilla, and a little bit of Patchouli as a base note

Soft and sweet, just a tiny bit of a fruitiness to it but mostly leaning on the jasmine and everything else is just there in small quantities to enhance the jasmine

Sylus

Tobacco, Patchouli, Leather, Smoke, Black Pepper, Clove, Cedar, and some Amber and Whisky to have some top notes there

Going for a smoky, spicy, but smooth masculine scent that's very bottom heavy, and very reminiscent of a high end cologne

Sylus' MC

Pomegranate, Blackberry, Amber, Clove, Cedar, Tobacco

The Persephone to Sylus' Hades. This mix of these fragrances in the right ratio gets you a rich red wine kind of scent. Bumping up the tobacco and clove a bit adds a spiciness to match Sylus' beloved sorceress

Xavier

Sandalwood, Clean Cotton, White Musk, and hints of Lavender, Sage, and Lily

Going for a mix of cozy blankets in warm afternoon sunshine, plus some brighter notes reminiscent of a nighttime meadow (had the animation that precedes his 5* wishes in mind)

Xavier's MC

Sweet Cherry, Cherry Blossom, Rose, Soft Vanilla, and a hint of Teak for a bottom note

Also going for a soft sweater vibe, but more feminine with a hint of fruitiness, almost like a scented lip gloss that makes you want to eat it (or kiss their lips 👀)

Plumeria, Hibiscus, Driftwood, tiny hints of Coconut and Pineapple to add extra beachiness, Teak Wood, Oakmoss (adds a marine element at the right ratio), and a hint of Clove as a nod to his fire evol

iiiii said this to my friend when i was drawing but!! i wanted to draw black mountains behind emmet and white clouds for ingo (because white = emmet and black = ingo Heh i'm a genius. I know) but mostly the clouds represent "greater heights" that ingo has "moved on" to. but emmet himself is still stagnant in the past which is why i chose the mountains

emmet facing the "light" and ingo facing down casting a shadow is intentional and i chose not to draw their arms to represent them losing a piece of each other,, with emmet losing his right arm (i hc ingo is right handed) and vice versa......

i posted this on twitter roughly a month ago (it is deleted now like most my other art) with the caption "節哀順變" and it's a phrase we say in chinese to others who are mourning a loss & i don't know how to translate it exactly? i think the english equivalent is "sorry for your loss" or "my condolences" but the general idea of the phrase is more like,, to not let yourself be ruled by grief kinda sorry i'm tired i can't translate/think well right now

Some thoughts on Cara

So some of you may have heard about Cara, the new platform that a lot of artists are trying out. It's been around for a while, but there's been a recent huge surge of new users, myself among them. Thought I'd type up a lil thing on my initial thoughts.

First, what is Cara?

From their About Cara page:

Cara is a social media and portfolio platform for artists. With the widespread use of generative AI, we decided to build a place that filters out generative AI images so that people who want to find authentic creatives and artwork can do so easily. Many platforms currently accept AI art when it’s not ethical, while others have promised “no AI forever” policies without consideration for the scenario where adoption of such technologies may happen at the workplace in the coming years. The future of creative industries requires nuanced understanding and support to help artists and companies connect and work together. We want to bridge the gap and build a platform that we would enjoy using as creatives ourselves. Our stance on AI: ・We do not agree with generative AI tools in their current unethical form, and we won’t host AI-generated portfolios unless the rampant ethical and data privacy issues around datasets are resolved via regulation. ・In the event that legislation is passed to clearly protect artists, we believe that AI-generated content should always be clearly labeled, because the public should always be able to search for human-made art and media easily.

Should note that Cara is independently funded, and is made by a core group of artists and engineers and is even collaborating with the Glaze project. It's very much a platform by artists, for artists!

Should also mention that in being a platform for artists, it's more a gallery first, with social media functionalities on the side. The info below will hopefully explain how that works.

Next, my actual initial thoughts using it, and things that set it apart from other platforms I've used:

1) When you post, you can choose to check the portfolio option, or to NOT check it. This is fantastic because it means I can have just my art organized in my gallery, but I can still post random stuff like photos of my cats and it won't clutter things. You can also just ramble/text post and it won't affect the gallery view!

2) You can adjust your crop preview for your images. Such a simple thing, yet so darn nice.

3) When you check that "Add to portfolio," you get a bunch of additional optional fields: Title, Field/Medium, Project Type, Category Tags, and Software Used. It's nice that you can put all this info into organized fields that don't take up text space.

4) Speaking of text, 5000 character limit is niiiiice. If you want to talk, you can.

5) Two separate feeds, a "For You" algorithmic one, and "Following." The "Following" actually appears to be full chronological timeline of just folks you follow (like Tumblr). Amazing.

6) Now usually, "For You" being set to home/default kinda pisses me off because generally I like curating my own experience, but not here, for this handy reason: if you tap the gear symbol, you can ADJUST your algorithm feed!

So you can choose what you see still!!! AMAZING. And, again, you still have your Following timeline too.

7) To repeat the stuff at the top of this post, its creation and intent as a place by artists, for artists. Hopefully you can also see from the points above that it's been designed with artists in mind.

8) No GenAI images!!!! There's a pop up that says it's not allowed, and apparently there's some sort of detector thing too. Not sure how reliable the latter is, but so far, it's just been a breath of fresh air, being able to scroll and see human art art and art!

To be clear, Cara's not perfect and is currently pretty laggy, and you can get errors while posting (so far, I've had more success on desktop than the mobile app), but that's understandable, given the small team. They'll need time to scale. For me though, it's a fair tradeoff for a platform that actually cares about artists.

Currently it also doesn't allow NSFW, not sure if that'll change given app store rules.

As mentioned above, they're independently funded, which means the team is currently paying for Cara itself. They have a kofi set up for folks who want to chip in, but it's optional. Here's the link to the tweet from one of the founders:

And a reminder that no matter that the platform itself isn't selling our data to GenAI, it can still be scraped by third parties. Protect your work with Glaze and Nightshade!

Anyway, I'm still figuring stuff out and have only been on Cara a few days, but I feel hopeful, and I think they're off to a good start.
