SOUL WITH VIOLENT OBSESSION LOOKS SO RIGHT NGL. Like, I think he could have both obsessions about harming others and himself. And in the end rituals are no longer helping, and he just... Doesn't know what to do. Alone with this violent thoughts that make you feel like a monster. We need to talk more about this kind of obsessions, ngl they're the worst type of obsessions you might have as a person with ocd. AND OBSESSIONS ABOUT HARMONIA, YEAAAH... Yk I really like to see good npd + bpd combo in characters. Like, I like to see good cluster b representation in general BUT SEEING THIS COMBO MAKES ME SOSOSO HAPPY (also I had the same feeling but with npd + aspd combos several times. I'm just really glad to see people don't think about characters like monsters just because they have symptoms of this two disorders). AND NOW THIS COMBO IS WITH OCD TOO AND I JUST LIKE AJAJAJANSNND THIS IS SO GOOD. But Soul is suffering sm ngl. bpd soul propaganda

his relationships with heart and mind are extremely tumultuous. he alternates between encouraging support and harsh criticism. he wants them to be close and loves them, but he's easily frustrated by their conflict and despises them for it.

he seeks a stability that seems impossible for him to achieve. when he doesn't feel like he can be stable, he threatens suicide because it feels like his only option. suicidal and self-destructive behavior is really common in bpd, especially in response to interpersonal distress and instability.

he has very little sense of self. identity isn't something he feels like he has the right to have (since personal separation is contradictory to trying to be Whole), but also, it seems like something he just can't get a grip on even if he tried.

I think that he has extreme attachment issues in concord. he's terrified that things will go wrong again, worried one of them will get hurt or disappear whenever he's not keeping an eye on them. he wants to know exactly where they are and be told when they're leaving because otherwise he'll panic about their absence.

on that note, his fears of hurting them or ruining things when things seem stable are something a lot of people with bpd struggle with. there's this underlying fear that the things "inherently wrong with you" will ruin everything you touch, either because of personal experience or internalized demonization.

if you headcanon Whole as a distinct person, that would be his favorite person. the extreme, almost religious idealization and having your entire sense of self revolving around a person (or really, the perception of perfection you have of a person) is a clear sign of having a favorite person. the abandonment issues would also be the worst with Whole, for obvious reasons

also i think it would be neat if this was a more widespread concept

i think the reason i find jason so interesting is because the lore surrounding him is so interesting but he comes across so straightlaced which suggests to me that he does this on purpose. he forces himself into this persona of perfection and "conceal don't feel" and it fascinates me. like there's the whole thing where there are expectations for jason, as the son of jupiter and juno's champion, add to that the fact that it is implied that the romans have far less contact with the gods and especially major gods than even the greeks, and that up until very recently, jason was the only child of the big three *chef's kiss* then when you think about the emphasis on hierarchy and obedience in the roman camp and jupiter being more associated with aspects of governance than zeus, and imagine feral 'i was raised by wolves' toddler!jason being molded to fit in and groomed to lead. and consider the history of the children of jupiter, and jupiter's own history with patricide, and his father's history with patricide, and how jason is already under scrutiny for the circumstances he was born under, an oath sworn on the Styx being broken by the god of oaths who was the only one to break it on the roman side, so jason must be under a lot of pressure. he can't mess up, he doesn't get that luxury. not only does he have to be perfect, he also has to be obedient and subservient to the gods, but also a great leader to his people, and also be as inoffensive and unobtrusive as possible, but also mediocrity is not an option and he has to stand out and be tuly great but also not too great and become a threat to the gods. he is so fascinating

The thing about blood is that once you've seen it you can never really get it out. It has a tendancy to linger, to drip into those places impossible to reach, a slow unnoticeable movement breaking its stagnation. Even if you think you've got all of it, chances are you haven't. The smell lingers, a sickly sweet fuzzy smell tinged with iron that somehow sticks in the back of your throat.

Imagine how much blood there was when Jared Hopworth attacked the institute. We know the boneturner is capable of removing bones with no blood at all but why would he when what he wants to cause is fear? He says that they undid the institute staff for parts, so I'd say they took a hell of a lot more than bones.

That's not to mention Melanie's attack with the knife, God knows how much blood Jared and his "perfect" friends had in their eldritch bodies, but if that knife hurt I'm willing to bet that blood was spilled. A lot of blood.

There's something uncanny about a place where something that awful's happened. Something in the foundations of the place. In a place with a history as messy as the institute I'm sure there was always something on the air, but that amount of bloodshed never really fades.

Even if you can't see or smell it I think there's something in the soul that knows it. Growing up there was a small park near where I lived, I always knew of it, walked past it, but never once had any desire to go near it. I don't know if I avoided it, but I never wanted to go into it. I found out a few years back that a girl died there. I won't go into detail but it was the kind of death that leaves that mark, and when I did eventually end up in that park the weight in the air was palpable.

I wonder if Jon could feel that sense of something when he came back to the institute after his coma. Does otherworldly sight stretch into the realms of the metaphysical? Could he see the residual fear of an entity so different to his own lingering in dark corners and clinging to his coworkers? Or could he simply sense it, that slight wrongness that would be so easy to attribute to being away for so long.

Jon didn't get a warm welcome, and perhaps he returned to a place that didn't even feel like the prison it'd been before. There's a comfort in the horrors we face daily, and even positive changes can make it feel even worse than it did before. The behaviour of his friends changed so much, and somehow so did the behaviour of his workplace.

It begs the question, is it better to know or to be oblivious? To be blind or to seek knowledge relentlessly? That feeling, that slight instinct that something happened here, there's something to know; how could one bear that after six months of knowing nothing real at all? Jon didn't know about the attack, and him knowing didn't help, but did he feel it? Was it there in that sea of knowledge the whole time but he couldn't bring himself to reach out and grasp it?

Because the thing with blood is that it lingers, and once you smell it, it never really goes away.

When I first booted up Starfield, I marvelled at how boring it is at first. The beginning of the game is. Audacious. Most games want to wow you right off the bat. Starfield just eeeases you into a sea of bland, grey landscapes and austere sci fi vistas and, at first, you think, wow, this game is gonna be bad. And then the game opens up. Boy howdy, is there a lot hidden in this game.

Still, a lot of us seem to be going in arms folded, wanting to hate it. Many folks seem to play it for an hour, say, "Jesus this is boring!" and uninstall. And it is bracingly boring at the start, isn't it? There's the Youtube industrial complex piling onto it. Microsoft and Bethesda certainly don't need defenders, and hating on big, bloated AAA games is fun, and Starfield is a hugely hyped release with a lot of janky, unexplained systems, a weird, idiosyncratic start and a gameplay loop that probably doesn't stream well.

The dopamine rush of taking your space cowboy to the shop to sell all your ill-gotten guns and stolen spacesuits, at what appears to be a boutique perfume counter, then buying up ship repair parts and meticulously transferring them to your cargo hold and going out to wreak havoc all over again probably doesn't come across when watching someone else do it.

There's also the decision, the fascinating decision, to hide all the interesting content behind the most prosaic-seeming sidequests.

Join the UC Vanguard? So I can be, what, some reserve army unit for a militaristic outwardly-utopian-but-with-a-hidden-dark-underbelly society? Not for this space scoundrel.

Yet so much of what the game wants to show you, its characters, its set pieces, its antagonists, the darkness of its past, its factions' histories, all open up from that single unattractive prospect.

It's much the same with the Freestar Collective questline: howdy pardner, care to sign up to be a deputy in your favourite space western milieu?

Um, no thanks. I don't know if you know about this, Starfield, but the main quest has you exploring mystical temples and metaphysics and discussing the fleeting, precious nature of the small amount of time we have and what we choose to do with it and who we choose to do it with. I don't think I got time to do your deputy nonsense.

And yet. Being recruited as a deputy opens up a galaxy-spanning mystery of murder and greed and weird locales like a casino on an ice planet where rich weirdos and armed scumbags bet on a bizarre bloodsport (think the Golden Saucer if the Golden Saucer was built inside a series of industrial bungalows and you had to run in the chocobo races yourself and all the chocobo were trying to kill you).

This, I think, is a big aspect of the Starfield experience. Encountering the most staid, inert little quest hook but then falling through into hours of meticulously created storytelling because of the choice to hold your nose and see what this dumb game wants to show you.

Some of the game's most expensive and detailed storylines, with dozens of locations and characters, come from quests you'd only find if you're in the right place at the right time. You can completely miss the pirate quest entirely and it's like one of the best ones in the game.

When the game's moment as a punching bag passes, people are going to find that there's a lot here to like.
