Btw Megatron could totally have saved the people in Nyon if he wanted to; he knew about Zeta's plan beforehand. All he needed to do was give Hot Rod and the citizens an evacuation alert. But he didn't because he wanted to give Optimus a good emotional impact with all the deaths and who cares about the common lowlife anyway, all they're good for is getting bodily thrown at Zeta until his weapon overloads from draining too many people.

The last two panels also gives us something on how he views (his own) authority. Because while he's always held a position of authority in high command, the high command is still a council. On the ship his authority is absolute.

The next three scenarios form a pattern. It always starts with Rodimus telling someone to kill a comrade, the person tasked with the killing goes 'what I don't want to do that', and Rodimus tones down the order from death to wound.

Each of these scenarios is in response to a critical situation. Rodimus' first orders of 'aim to kill' are, while extreme, not disproportionate to the level of threat presented. They're within reason and authority. And ceding from kill to wound when protested is proof that he doesn't not care. But it also shows that his first instinctual reaction towards threats is to kill first ask questions later, even if the threat used to be his friend, comrade, or compatriot, he's able to weigh the lives on a scale and make that hard decision. He's also the type of person who's very comfortable with taking the fates other people into his own hands and deciding whether they should live or die (which is why him choosing to spare Getaway after retaking the Lost Light is a sign of character growth).

His characterization is fairly consistent throughout the comics, except for this:

Everything in Spotlight Hot Rod goes against his later presentations. In his spotlight he's said to repeatedly beat himself up over one failed mission and is averse to taking responsibility towards other people for fear that he'd get them killed but in later issues he has No Problems doing exactly that. He displays no preferences for 'going solo' aside from the mission to retrieve the matrix and that's because everyone else kicked him out. When he wanted to leave on the Lost Light he made speeches to convince other people to join him despite the fact the Autobots were already outnumbered on Cybertron and taking people away would make their situation worse. Whenever he went anywhere in mtmte he assembled a team to accompany him.

This scene especially contradicts Spotlight Hot Rod in every single way. The only consistent aspect of his character is the recklessness. He forces Optimus to authorize a rescue mission, of which he declares himself the team leader, ignores Optimus' caution about keeping it clandestine and tells everyone to barge through the front door, shuts Ironhide's objections down by pulling rank, then falls into a trap and gets Ironhide killed. Mission failed too obviously, they only got Prowl out. Optimus takes responsibility for the failure and surrenders to the humans, of which Rodimus' response is: "he freaked out because he couldn't hack it" and promptly also proceeds to drop everything and leave because yay there's no one to keep me on this stupid planet anymore and whoever wants to can come with. Where. is the guilt.

That and the whole fiasco with Swindle and Menasor were probably Rodimus' worst moments lol. Overall he's the type of leader good with stressful trolley problems but bad at considering the larger or long-term implications of his actions. His flippancy towards life and death and tendency to solve problems with the bluntest approach bleeds heavily into his leadership decisions and... just how his character is in general. Thank goodness there's only one of Drift and he's gone for most of the Lost Light voyage, Rodimus really doesn't work well with too many yes-men hanging around.

i’m so glad you brought up that bit in excalibur where magneto’s ideal prison is him getting to be a husband and father again, because it’s so relevant to the idea that the house of m reality isn’t actually everyone’s ideal life, but just wanda’s idea of what everyone’s ideal life would be. all the time i see x-fans condemn magneto for house of m because his ideal world is him becoming exactly like his oppressors, but house of m isn’t actually the life magnus wants! any time magnus gets to become a political leader, he hates it. he hated ruling genosha. he hated ruling krakoa. deep down, he doesn’t want to be superior. he just wants to live in peace with the family he lost.

also, shoutout to magda and anya, who never get to be anything other than magneto’s women in refrigerators. i wish they got to be more important than that. i love it every time we see them in comics, but it’s so rare. and shoutout to magda in particular since she’s been almost completely erased from the narrative by the maximoff retcon. really hope we get a reveal that natalya maximoff was magda all along when we inevitably make wanda and pietro magneto’s mutant children again.

i honestly didnt know excalibur was a predecessor to HoM when i heard about both runs so when i saw that set of panels for the first time it really had me reconsider HoM and the 'ideal reality' bit, im surprised i dont see it mentioned more often

i really wish there were more appearances of mags, magda, and anya; if there are stories focused on them i barely see them talked about... ive heard magda is mags' best-written partner from some but i also very rarely see stories that feature her directly named, so i never get to see her beyond the few fleeting instances i just so happen to catch her. id very much like to see more of her and mags' domestic life....

I think one of the main problems with even just the concept of Veilguard is that they wanted anyone to be able to pick it up without playing a DA game before. And everything came crumbling down from there.

Dragon Age as a concept works due to the lore, not despite of it. Whenever I talk about da with people who've never played it. I basically have to start from the begining and explain everything. What are Grey Wardens? Whats the Blight? Mages and Templars? The Chantry? Ect.

Making the 4th game of an ongoing series/story a new starting point for new players was never going to work. Taking out most of the lore and leaving you with whats a generic fantasy game with the DA name on it. But still including enough terms from the previous titles to where they had to add a glossary in it. Which doesnt really get into depth about anything mentioned.

Ive had this thought in my head for a while and hopefully my point came across. Sorry if not, just rambling into the void.

The main idea is Gaster is extremely care free and kinda melancholy. Him calling Papyrus a “carcass” is the most canon thing I can think of I love it 😭

I imagine this first bit is him fairly recently after falling into the void, he traveled way forwards in time to see what the hell this thing that replaced him was like and found himself to be amused and a ✨CATHARSIS✨ for him

Traveling a bit in time through the eye transition, we see him making the tape recording and putting it in the secret compartment cause I SWEAR THAT WAS ALL HIS DOING. this is gonna age horribly

Then him doing his whole Player business. I think the “I deserve forgetting” is the most raw line ive ever heard in my entire life, BUT THIS IS A LIGHT HEARTED AND NOT ANGSTY PMV SO IM IGNORING THAT

He finds he doesnt much care for how he feels, more what he has to do, which is GET THE PLAYER and do whatever he has planned for Deltarune-

ik comparing ninjago and monkie kid is tired and annoying but harumi and macaque are so similar and as an avid fan of both i have to intervene (more rambling under the cut)

i wouldve LOVED if harumi’s arc in crystalized went the same way as macaque’s arc in s3; both of died and came back to life in very similar situations but harumi’s motivations wouldve been a lot clearer if it was presented like macaque’s

both characters died in a tragic and bad emotional state but were brought back to life to basically be omnipotent power person’s main man. bc of their blinding hatred for the “heroes” and also just bc they didnt want to die they decide to take up the offer and give up their soul (basically) to be brought back to life and destroy the world for their new “master” (idk a better word)

but where it diverges is that the narrative of s3 constantly emphasizes macaque in pain and how at his lowest point he doesnt even care about trying to get his “revenge” anymore, he just wants so desperately to stop being under lbd’s control and stop being in constant pain bc of it.

if harumi’s arc emphasized those things more it wouldve been really good and way more believable for if she would join the ninja in fighting mr overlord. i actually have wayyy more to say for this type of au but to summarize harumi and macaque (sinistershadow duo) FOREVER!!!!

SLAY hold on Ok so I actually havent made a post for script writing... or if i did i forgor. But here's a post for what programs I use and PNGtuber stuff in particular. I'll probably end up making a masterpost at SOME POINT but I am still learning and have made a total of 3 video essays in my life </3

ANYWAYS THIS IS JUST ME RAMBLING FOR MULTIPLE PARAGRAPHS👍

Umm okay so for script writing... It really depends on the scope of the project. If its about a character or topic you have a TON of preconceived knowledge on, just dump every bit of information out from your brain onto a google doc. make multiple docs even. it doesnt matter how messy it gets. Then just start structuring it however you want, like make an outline, explore ideas and how they could flow into eachother, scrap them, keep bits you like, etc. Expect to scrap a LOT of rambling, which is normal. Don't delete anything you write though, just keep it in a separate place just in case you want to revisit any ideas later.

I think the most important guideline for me personally was to structure it in a way that is "slow and steady." Don't explode all the information you have all at once, you kinda just want to trickle-feed it to the audience. The flow of one concept to another is also important, just do bare minimum for the audience to understand, don't distract them with extra info that doesn't connect to your main point for that section.

Basically, think of the YouTube essays that had you really engaged, or that you really enjoyed, study what you REALLY liked about them - What are the main points? how does it portray new information? Think about their structure as a baseline

Now something related ( definitely not a necessity ) but personally one of my FAVORITE things great video essays do is strategically withholding information from the audience right up until that info is relevant, or until it would have the MOST impact. Storytelling mediums do this too

One of my fav example of this is from a video by LasersZ "How Bolt is a critique of Disney" If you want it slightly spoiled, keep reading. Otherwise just watch it first lol

The narrator argues how Penny's character is a struggling child actor, and he lays out all the information for this argument through media analysis / evidence from the movie itself, he gets you invested in her character struggle.. and then he reveals something: That this whole time, Penny is actually voiced by Miley Cyrus - an at the time child actor who was being used by the TV industry in the exact same way they were using Penny in Bolt. This argument just TRANSCENDED the source material. When he could've just mentioned that information offhandedly at the start, he actually USED that information to strengthen his argument and make the video more meaningful and engaging. Even if you aren't making an argument, this sentiment is probably still useful. You really don't have to pull a "twist" in your video to make it fun, but i just like them hehe

Another example is the goddamn MAGNUM OPUS that is DefunctLand's Disney Channel theme song investigation. At the very end, a HUGE piece of information is revealed that makes the whole video absolutely outstanding, and so appreciative of what its trying to do. I'm not even going to SAY it you need to watch it yourself. If you know you KNOW. AAAGHH. You also see this in Summoning Salt speedrunning history videos. It's always like "it seems this was the new world record... UNTIL... (BOOM. NEW SPEEDRUNNER / STRATEGY DISCOVERED AT JUST THE RIGHT TIME)

ok now I'm just rambling about my favorite videos LOL but you know what I mean. It's internet storytelling. If you want to make it more exciting / meaningful / funny, be very select with the information you're delivering. again, a strategic 'bare minimum' for the audience to understand, don't distract them.

Ooh another thing- specifically something I've taken from Patricia Taxxon's DHMIS video : Tell the audience - how did this thing make you FEEL. In an era where lazy content and Ai is everywhere, people want humanity and authenticity more than ANYTHING. So don't be afraid to go a little off script, be unprofessional, be vulnerable, just be yourself! :']

I was having trouble writing this at first because I was having a writer's block moment (a moment that has lasted months ;-;), but I was laying in bed and suddenly inspiration just hit me and I finally felt like I had an idea good enough to write most of this. (That being said, it still took me forever because of editing and stuff, but I'm starting to become more comfortable taking my time because of understanding readers like you!)

Macaque's breaking point came on a chilly night sitting on the edge of a roof, looking down at the still very lively streets, beautiful lights and lanterns keeping the hustle and bustle alive long after sunset.

(Admittedly, it wasn't Macaque's favorite time or place, the noises were too loud, the scents too strong, and the lights too bright, but you seemed happy and that was really the main thing he cared about at the moment.)

He wasn't exactly sure what it was that night, why he felt the need to act when he knew he shouldn't. Maybe it was how much brighter the moon seemed, or maybe it was how you scoffed and punched his shoulder when he made a bad joke. Maybe it was even the way you rambled on and on with a smile, pausing every once and a while to take a bite of the pastry he had stolen bought for you, and then promptly continuing to talk with your mouth full because you were too excited to remember manners, apparently. Seemed Monkey King was rubbing off on you, which Macaque loathed to find more charming than he'd ever admit.

Whatever the reason, it was a chaste little thing, the kiss he gave. A casual lapse in conversation was interrupted when you felt his lips suddenly press against yours paired with a cool hand holding your cheek to keep you steady. Your eyes fly open in surprise and confusion, shadow magic whispering around the two of you as if to protect this forbidden moment in space and time. Ultimately, once you had processed what the hell just happened, he was already gone, having shadow portaled away somewhere to hide from the assumed consequences of his actions. Consequences that were likely to have been you punching him or shoving him off the building.

For a few seconds you just stared at the spot he had previously been, your mind struggling to comprehend the shift from the comfortable moment you had been basking in just a few minutes before.

You looked down at the street below, a mixture of confusion, dread, and... elation swirling through your stomach.

And then...

"SHIT, how am I gonna get down?"

(A quick text and a clumsy climb down a fire escape later)

Wukong huffed, plopping his rear down on the bed in front of you, causing you to bounce a bit on the mattress, "you're very demanding, anyone ever tell you that?"

"Once or twice," you hum, comb in hand as the grumpy monkey in front of you pouts, tail flicking at you, tickling the tip of your nose and making you swat it away while chuckling, "now stop being so dramatic or else you'll end up taking Mac's place as the resident theater kid."

"Eugh, no, I'm not getting back on stage any time soon," his lips quirk up into a playful smirk you can't see from behind him but can sense in the affectionate way his tail winds around your wrist when you tried swatting it away. Though it doesn't take long before his joy falters when you sigh and say, "speaking of Macaque..."

His tail finds itself dropping away from your wrist and slapping against the mattress as he anxiously begins to scratch at his wrist, you flick his hand to reprimand him for it, grabbing a fidget toy from your nightstand to toss into his lap and keep his hands occupied.

"I'm sure you can guess he's what I wanted to talk to you about," you awkwardly chew on the inside of your cheek, beginning to comb messy patches of Wukong's fur down. He preferred when you just used your hands but you found a comb gave better results, you would go over it all with your fingers after you got all the knots out, "he, uh... he kissed me. Earlier today. I considered just texting you and letting you two sort it out yourselves but... I don't know, I didn't want you freaking out on him or anything. Didn't want this driving a wedge between you two after how far you've come."

The silence that stretched between the two of you after you said this was anything but comforting, the inability to see his facial expression only further fueling your unease, anxiety winding you up so tight that you jolt in surprise when Wukong face palms.

He seems almost relieved as he gives a breathy laugh and says, "of course! Gods, he's had me worried all this time just because he has a stupid crush? I should've known," for a moment you think he's being bitter but then he leans back against you, head against your stomach so he can grin up at you, "s'pose I can't blame him."

He reaches up to pinch your cheek and say, in an exaggerated baby voice, "you're such a cwute widdle hwuman after aww."

You can't help but snort, shoving him off of you, "oh my gosh, be serious."

"No can do, sugar cube," he smirks, wrestling with you until you gave up and let him rest his head in your lap.

"Sugar cube?" you scoff in amusement, raising a brow, "were you watching that cowboy version of Monkey Cop again? 'Monkey Sheriff,' I think it was called?"

"Mmmmaybe~" the playful mirth in his eyes makes it hard to focus so you set the comb aside and rest a hand over his eyes, this just makes him chuckle, prompting you to roll your eyes fondly.

"Are you avoiding talking about the subject?" You ask seriously after a moment and his grin falls, not into a frown but into something thoughtful as he genuinely considers it. One thing he's been working on is not dodging hard conversations with jokes, which had been particularly hard when he discovered that he does it a lot without realizing it.

"Nah," he finally says after a moment which makes you frown and tilt your head in confusion, your hand still over his eyes. He seems unbothered by this.

"Really? You're- Not upset or anything?" You ask in confusion, he just shrugs. Unhelpful as ever.

"I mean, I think Mac's liked you for a while," he says, feeling your glare on him, upset that he hadn't told you, "but I knew pressuring him to talk about it before he was ready wouldn't get us anywhere, so I just decided to wait until he made a move before I bring it up."

"That's... surprisingly thoughtful of you... Wait, you knew he liked me and you didn't tell me??"

"Well- I didn't know, but- bud, if I told you, you would immediately go pester him about it and then he'd be mad at me for telling you and-"

You move your hands from his eyes to flick his nose and he whines, glaring up at you but takes the hint to shut up.

"Soooooo, you withheld information again because you think you know what's best for everyone?" It was meant to be teasing but it clearly lands wrong as he frowns and looks away.

"That's not-"

"Sorry, I..." you sigh and shake your head, "I didn't mean it seriously. But, ah... if you're not upset about it then what do you feel."

Wukong gives a thoughtful grunt before shrugging again, grinning at the way you glare at him. Before you can press him for more he waves you off and says, "eh, amusement, maybe? Relief, too. Mac's been working himself up for a while. I was kinda worried there was something else going on. For a guy who doesn't like following the rules he stresses about your weird societal norms a lot."

"... Wait, so you're just like- totally chill about all this?"

Wukong sighs, raising a brow, "bud, I've never really understood all this modern relationship crap. You mortals make things so complicated. We all feel what we feel and want what we want. Why can't it be left at that?"

"Because that is incredibly vague," you huff, not entirely sure how to take Wukong's answer.

"Yeah, just like laws," Wukong responded confidently.

"... No-??? Do you even know the laws????"

Wukong pursed his lips and when you narrowed your eyes he looked away and shrugged, "in my defense, it's hard to keep up with weird human politics."

"You're literally a king-"

"Demon politics are easier. Of course my kingdom is one of the better ones-"

Flicking his ear pulls a whine from him and he huffs out a, "what?"

"Stop talking before you end up saying something stupid."

"Saying stupid things is my job."

"Right now your job is to go talk to Macaque."

"Fine, but you're coming with, he'll get all skittish if he thinks I'm mad at him."

Wukong hops off your bed and approaches your window, grunting as he slides it open and whistles, calling Nimbus down and watching as the cloud stopped just outside.

With his usual insufferable grin, he gestures for you to go ahead.

"Beauty first~" He teases.

"Call me that again and I'm stepping on your tail," you deadpan, prompting him to shrug and say, "noted," before shoving you out the window onto the soft cloud.

AAAAnnnd, that's a wrap! I am so sorry this took me literal months to get out but I hope you still read and enjoyed it! I did technically have a bit more planned (I feel like this was a bit Wukong heavy despite how the focus should have been on Macaque) but you've already waited for long enough and I feel so horrible- I digress.
