The Outsiders- Now showing in warrior cats
Ponyboy- Ponypounce (coined by the amazing Pidge in the discord server)
I made him a dilute calico cause I wanted him to be different from everyone else and also as a subtle nod to him bleaching his hair, similar to Darry he has darker fur and smaller ears, similar to Soda he has cool tone eyes and a longer/fluffier tail(and even ear tufts)
Johnny- Lavenderblaze
Tuxedo, he’s lankier than everyone else and does have the scar from his attack, And I went with Lavender for the prefix since he’s not v intimidating and bro needs to relax, blaze as the suffix as a nod to his ill fate in the book.
Dally- Dandeliontuft
Longer fur, and resembles a lynx similar to the book. He’s bigger than most cats in the clan as well. I went with Dandelion as the prefix cause I’ve always wanted to use it and it’s more original than using lion as a prefix, his suffix is a play on the word ‘tuff’ since his ears have tufts.
Sodapop- Squirrelspirit
Not much to say here, Squirrel was used for his high energy and Spirit was used because of his empathy towards everyone. His description follows his book as they all do and gave him squirrel like motifs
Darry- Deerstrike
Does his design follow the book? Probably not but I wanted him to look different compared to his brothers. He’s often the outlier since Sodapop and Ponyboy are often described to be similar. He stockier with muscle and takes no shit, hence Strike as the suffix. Deer just sounded close to Darry so.
Steve- Rustclaw
Grey tabby. And yes I’m well aware that rust is orange but I thought oil/grease sounded stupid so Rust it was. Reason behind it is literally because Steve is good with cars, and claw because he’s always ready for a fight, itching for one at times. Does he also follow the book description? Probably not I modeled him more closely to Tom Cruise.
Two Bit- Turtleshine
Orange tabby. Following his book description of having read hair (sideburns) and also poking fun at the Mickey Mouse shirt he wears in the film, he has pants. No real reason behind the name thought Turtle was a cute name for Two but and shine because he’s a ball of sunshine always making everyone’s day with his jokes.

COMIC BOOK REFERENCES & EASTER EGGS - Captain Marvel (2019)
Carol Danvers has a long and complicated history in the comics, much of which would be very difficult to adapt for the big screen. Thankfully, though, for comic book fans, there are many allusions to the source material instead. The following is a guide to all the ones I’ve spotted along with any deviations from the source material (I will update this as more come to light). Note that owing to the convoluted and complex nature of comic books, I’ve tried to include only the most essential information regarding a character’s history and backstories.
Though not a direct adaptation, the general story of the “Kree/Skrull War” (The Avengers #89-97, 1971-72) is used as the basis for the film—the Kree and the Skrulls fighting each other with Earth caught in between.
A former US Air Force pilot, Carol Danvers gained her initial powers of flight and enhanced strength after being caught in the explosion of a damaged Kree Psyche-Magnitron. This was amidst a fight between the Kree warriors Mar-Vell/Captain Marvel and Yon-Rogg (Captain Marvel #18, 1969). The Psyche-Magnitron—a machine that converts thoughts into reality—alters her genes and turns her into a human/Kree hybrid, granting her the abilities possessed by Mar-Vell. Danvers would later develop the ability to absorb energy and fire them as blasts from her body. A slight retcon to her origins would occur in The Life of Captain Marvel #4 (2018), in which it is revealed that Danvers is in fact half Kree, and that the Kree Psyche-Magnitron merely activated her latent powers. Originally going by the code name Ms Marvel, Danvers would also go on to use the names Binary and Warbird, before taking on the mantle of Captain Marvel in Captain Marvel #1 (2012).
In the film we briefly see Carol’s father (Joseph Danvers) and brother (Steve Danvers), though in the comics she has an additional sibling, Joseph Danvers Jr. At one point in the film Carol says “Higher, further, faster, baby,” a nod to the Captain Marvel comic arc titled “Higher, further, faster, more,” as well as being words Carol’s mentor, Helen Cobb, wrote to her to describe their similar mindsets and desire to push boundaries.
While Maria Rambeau is a character taken from the comics, it is her daughter—Monica Rambeau—who is friends with Carol in the source material. A hero in her own right, Rambeau has the ability to convert her body into various types of energy. Monica has also used various code names throughout her career, including Captain Marvel, Pulsar, and Photon (Maria’s call sign in the film is a nod to this). Carol affectionately calls Monica “Lieutenant Trouble,” which in the comic books is a nickname she gives to a young friend and fan, Katherine Renner.
Carol and Maria not being allowed to fly in combat missions bears a resemblance to Helen Cobb’s situation from the comics. In 1961, Helen is told that she and her fellow female pilots are not permitted to become astronauts as they lack military jet experience, experience they cannot obtain as women were barred from flying jets.
Early on in the movie we see Starforce dispatched on a mission to Torfa. The planet is a relatively minor one in the comics, known for its poisonous atmosphere resulting from vibranium extraction.
The Kree are an alien race known for their military prowess and advanced technology. Their home planet is Hala, which is located in the Greater Magellanic Cloud Galaxy. The Kree have blue skin, but breeding with other alien races has resulted in pink skinned (also referred to as white) Kree.
In the comics, Starforce are a group of Kree warriors tasked with protecting the Kree Empire. Formed by the Supreme Intelligence, the initial comic lineup consisted of Att-Lass/Captain Atlas (a soldier trained in many forms of combat), Minn-Erva/Doctor Minerva (a pilot and gifted bio-geneticist; in the film she’s Starforce’s sniper), Korath the Pursuer (a cyber-geneticist; he was previously in Guardians of the Galaxy), Shatterax (cybernetically enhanced warrior; not present in the film), Supremor (an android housing the Supreme Intelligence’s consciousness; doesn’t appear in the film), and Ultimus (has the ability to manipulate cosmic energy; not present in the film).
The comic book incarnation of Bron Char (rendered as Bron-Char in the film) is a member of the Lunatic Legion, a group whose goal is to destroy the human race. Though a scout in the movie, in the comics Soh-Larr was a Kree warrior who fell in love with a Skrull, Ryga’a, with whom he had a child, Dorrek Supreme.
Yon-Rogg was a Colonel in the Kree army, unlike his cinematic counterpart who is the commander of Starforce. His antagonistic relationship with Mar-Vell from the source material has been carried over to the film.
In the comics, the Supreme Intelligence is an organic computer created by the Kree Science Council, initially designed to help the alien race create a Cosmic Cube. Upon gaining sentience, however, the Supremor refused, knowing the danger such an object posed. Composed of the brightest Kree minds, it served as the leader of the Kree Empire for many years. In the source material it’s depicted as a large green floating head, it’s true form in the film, however, has yet to be revealed.
Mar-Vell has been changed from a male to a female for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The comic book incarnation of Mar-Vell was sent to Earth to spy on humanity. Adopting the identity of Dr Walter Lawson (the name of a scientist Mar-Vell encountered who had passed away; changed to Wendy Lawson in the film) he began working at the Cape Canaveral military base, where he would meet the facility’s security chief, Carol Danvers. Mar-Vell would go on to defend humanity many times despite his mission, before dying of cancer as depicted in the graphic novel The Death of Captain Marvel (1982).
The aircraft Wendy Lawson designs is called the Asis. This is a reference to the Asis program from the Ultimate Universe. Mahr Vehl (the Ultimate Universe version of Mar-Vell) joins the program in an effort to help humanity with interstellar travel.
In both the comic books and the film, Skrulls are a green-skinned reptilian alien race with the ability to shape-shift. Originating from the planet Skrullos, Skrulls have a warrior culture and, like the Kree, have conquered many worlds throughout the galaxy.
Unlike his cinematic counterpart, Talos wasn’t born with the ability to shape-shift in the comics. A skilled combatant, parts of his body have been cybernetically enhanced giving him super strength.
Nick Fury tells Carol that he was born in Huntsville, Alabama, though in the source material he hails from New York City. His middle name of Joseph, however, is something both incarnations share. The comic book version of Fury loses the ability to see with his left eye as a result of a grenade blast, whereas his film counterpart has the misfortune of losing it after Goose scratches it.
In the comics, Carol calls her pet Chewie (named after the Star Wars character Chewbacca, since Danvers is a fan of the franchise), whilst in the movie the cat is named Goose (referring to the character of the same name from the 1986 film Top Gun). Both Goose and Chewie aren’t real house cats, but rather an alien species known as Flerken (Rocket Raccoon reveals this to Carol in Captain Marvel #7, 2014) that look like domestic felines. Flerkens possess tentacles that are released from their mouths, lay eggs to reproduce, and contain pocket dimensions within their bodies.
Carol’s call sign in the MCU is “Avenger,” though her comic book counterpart has the decidedly less cool call sign of “Cheeseburger” (she got the name after vomiting during a g-force simulator exercise).
The various costume colours Carol cycles through are references to costumes she’s worn in the comics. The black, red, and yellow combination allude to Carol’s Ms Marvel outfit; the black and silver colour scheme could refer to the Warbird costume; while the green and white one is a nod to the classic Kree uniform.
Being set in the past, it comes as no surprise that there are many nods to the MCU. The space-jumps through honeycomb-shaped portals is a design first established in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. S.H.I.E.L.D. once again has a presence in a Marvel movie, although a slight continuity error sees the organisation’s name pronounced as it appears, despite Coulson saying the full acronym in Iron Man, only shortening it towards the end of the film. At one point Carol flies a Quadjet, a precursor to the Quinjet. We see an early version of Project Pegasus, the facility where it’s held making appearances in Thor and The Avengers, and in turn, the Tesseract is seen on screen once again. Carol Danvers gives Fury a modified pager to contact her with, a device we see him use at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Fury puts into motion his “Avenger Initiative,” originally naming it the “Protector Initiative.” Lastly, for the mid-credits scene, we get a sequence depicting Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, Bruce Banner, and James Rhodes monitoring the pager, culminating in Carol’s arrival back on Earth, which appears to be taken from Avengers: Endgame.

Suki (Lightning x Yin Synthesis) vs Mirai (3rd Reservoir)
ROUND ONE // SPEED + REFLEXES
When it comes to raw speed, Suki practically goes unmatched when pit against foes lacking blood ties or blatant power. On some occasions managing to leave few serious battles without--so much as the enemy getting a single clean shot in. Given her Release Speed and natural affinity for lightning, she cancels attacks like no tomorrow, and attacks with her entire body leaving little room to breathe.
Though the situation is similar for Mirai, the cause barely has anything to do with speed. Rather Mirai’s Reaction Time makes up what she lacks in agility against speedsters akin to the other, which plays its part with Cast Time, where a single snap of the finger is needed to utilize most spells. With her short Cast Time she’s allowed to fight like normal, keeping her ability to capitalize on hits repeatedly.
ROUND TWO // BODY + STRENGTH
When it comes to Suki’s body she falls under the category of a normal human by her universe’s standards, granted, through extensive training and her birthright as an upper-branch Xchiyu, she’s well-versed in traditional combat--her body having a natural kink for helping adapt to the enemy’s attack chain either to evade or counter. This adeptness gives Suki so much insight on the battle at hand that her body tends to store the memory so she may call on certain experiences to further herself on a whim, though this ability may be attributed to her merits under the Transformation Type.
Regarding Suki’s innate strength, she can flip toss and tear through enemies more than one-hundred times her size via Physical Attacks and bust through metals even denser than neutron stars without much trouble. She’s endured plenty of Special Attacks capable of destroying everything from stars to the universe itself, even contesting such forces with her fists in her civilian form. And it’s not like she gives out easy, acting as a testament to her great speed, she possesses a lot of stamina too. It’s rare to ever see her stay winded for long, which tends to make some mistake her as alien at times.
Similarly enough, Mirai, too has withstood the tests of time tanking a Time-bomb the size of a small country capable of rewriting the universe, at least, had she not dulled its effects prior to detonating. Nonetheless the explosion ended up bringing Suki and Mirai together, and their universes in a critical state, only giving a hint at how durable she is even nowadays, but that’s not where the madness ends as she’s able to keep fighting even when she’s overextended her time tapping into the 1st and 2nd Reservoir of magic.
Reminds me--about Mirai’s body. As a magi, Mirai too is classified as a human by her universe’s standards. Instead of focusing on chi and its physical applications, her universe focused on its sister power magic, leading to a different evolution among mortals where they can naturally store magic in the body. Add in her incredible self-awareness and adjustment to greater magical forces like the fragmented Dawn Stone and Claire Text and she basically has an abundance of magic to spare by default with even greater reserves in the back to continuously cast spell after spell. Factor that even when she’s at zero units her physical strength goes unhindered.
ROUND THREE // EXPERIENCE + TACTICS
Suki has only ever trained under one mentor outside of school and family, whom goes by the name Fuu, a goddess. While there meeting wasn’t random, Suki definitely had to go through a lot before even getting to chance to learn under Fuu--ignoring the fact she only got to cause of Fuu’s attraction to her fusion with Damian and her general interest in their Yin Yang accessibility and imbalance, Suki still had to kill Fuu’s father (The Strongest Man) with assistance. At that point in time Suki had done battle with the supernatural, espers, demons, lesser gods, angels, and androids over the span of a good four years, each one capable of throwing the entire universe for a loop had they succeeded their devious acts. Yet, despite this, Saikuru (Fuu’s father) managed to dwarf Suki and allies capable of similar feats without even trying, yet it was Suki and Damian’s Yin Yang Fissue that put him down face of everything.
Obviously, once Suki was ready for the next step in her training, Fuu gave Suki the task to acquire and hone the Hyper Hare ability into her arsenal to make her greatest strengths overshadow her habitual weaknesses as a warrior, that being her speed and Energy Control.
Over the course of the next five to six years, Suki took the various lessons she’s learned over the years to control her fate and do battle with similarly experienced mortals whether genetic monstrosities from the future, body snatching immortals, conceptual identities taking physical form, summoners from entirely different sets of universes, god slayers, or even those who absorb death flags and the very future--heck even herself, Suki has managed to weasel her way into the winner’s circle using her wit and skill as an expert in Lightning, Yin, and Celestial Releases even going as far as to synchronize highly incompatible attributes and create the very form Synthesis when branching beyond the god-class. Her performance in tournaments tending to lack near the end compared her accomplishments.
Suki has also kept her cool when venturing into the depths of Oblivion, a dark and wonky world with a low atmosphere, the mental and spiritual beat-down of limbo, and gravity hundreds times that of Earth. Suki has also trained on Weak-point Mountain, a place that weighs on the spirit so much it’s almost impossible to release energy, which is remarked a danger zone due to the giant creatures that roam the button and the carnivorous beasts at the top. Additionally, Suki has gone to Netherworld once and has managed to evade the wildlife there while looking for the Garden of Eden.
When it comes to strategy, while Suki can be a little slow at times, once she has an ideal how a technique works, it’s basically a wrap. The only people Suki’s faced that could counter and deny her victory without interference were god slayers called Nina and Fusae, which left Suki on the cups of Double Taming Lightning every time as her only out. Otherwise, she tends to gauge the strength of her opponents using her speed before assessing how quickly she can deal with them, tending to use any spare time to setup attacks using needles, magnetism, paralysis, wires, spiritual severance, and on some occasions bladed weapons to trip up the opponent before overwhelming them with gigantic attacks when simple gashes aren’t enough. Suki also has the ability to purify or seal enemies when necessary, albeit she barely brings the right tools to seal her opponents.
As for Mirai, while her history isn’t well-known by many, nor as expansive as Suki’s, Mirai has had her fair share of battles against the very same espers and god slayers, managing to even put up an even fight at times when it was thought impossible. However, it should be clear she’s done battle against armies worth of esper before she even met Suki, warded off ghosts in the city of Asgard, and even scared off demon gods to protect her own world, if her battles against other high level sorceresses like her mother Sasara means nothing to you.
Each of the Guild Masters she’s crossed in her universe during her rebellion not seeming to even slow her any when she was gunning for Asgard at an adolescent age. Sure that was before she looked through the Claire Text but at the same, old age barely affected the outcome of their battle unlike the Grand Elder’s found in Suki’s universe, whether the conflict was physical or spiritual, she outsmarted each and everyone of them using nothing but the spells she learned during her time as a magical girl at the academia, only revealing her strongest spell--Dragonic Revolver against her closest friend Serena.
Again all of this being before she even got her hand of the Claire Text, participated in war with espers, stop the Psychic Time-bomb, enter Universe 9 unregistered, compete in the Magic Games, train under Fuu, face the demon-gods, and fight the god slayers. No wonder she was at the top of her class, cause she’s straight dominating the rank scene before even mellowing out enough to be seen as cold and mature to outsiders.
Unknown to many, Mirai’s familiar is actually a small black cat she has rarely called on other than a means of shielding herself from a fatal attack or harshly drawing magic straight out of her (Luminous). She also uses her twisted imagination to call on the aide of an entity she calls Hiei, a purple and black blob of magic that momentarily shifts between hydra, serpentine, and dragon with the power to seep into the shadows, tending to move at speeds around ten times that of Mirai’s Dragonic Revolver linearly. Hiei is Mirai’s main means of dealing with anyone she deems fodder or too inexperienced by beat her. Generally speaking, Mirai tends to overpower her enemies using a plethora of range focused and spread attacks while aiming to deal internal damage when unarmed.
Mirai tends to use smoke bombs, shuriken, kunai, and the legendary weapon Entropy she stole on her ventures throughout the galaxy to lay the pressure thick by storing energy and reflecting attacks, and has found ways to combine preset Substitution with the vastly untapped 3rd Reservoir’s magic to essentially cheat death and send its sensation towards those she has cursed to build advantage where tethers of magic would be thought pointless. Mirai turned Luminous into a pair of cat ears on her head and has trained with Hiei to use it to extend from her arm and maw on foes as solid chaos. Mirai also possesses the ability to use telekinesis and heal, although her ability to heal people is laughably poor.
LIGHTNING ROUND // UPRISING + THE BIG THREE
Suki and Mirai both have birthright, drive, skill, and innate talent as warriors. Suki, the heiress of her adept clan forced to learn the forgotten aspects of battle to ensure her victory and meet the remnants of her clan and learn the truth about what happened “that night”, all while balancing bonds with training for the ultimate goal of bettering herself in the back. As the only Xchiyu to make it so far, why not continue and prove there’s something more to being a warrior than meets the eye.
And Mirai, the girl whose father left her in the shadow of her superior mother and sister as a low class reject who went rogue with the magic passed down by the very person she hates to make a name for herself, diligently training for nothing else but to uncover the secrets about magic they couldn’t dare to find themselves. As the only one Magica other than her mother to take an active role in war, Mirai intends to show while power isn’t the be all end all to a fight, it’s a necessary evil.
When it comes to Mind, Mirai definitely takes it with all the study, tactical use of prep-time, her ever-growing affinity for magic, self-awareness, and serious attitude there’s far too much Mirai knows about herself and the world that would ever let her get blinded by anger so easily. There’s also the pressing matter she rarely needs to reflect or justify her wants or needs, and even when she does can already accept the flaws in her way of thinking, only changing when she feels it’s a necessity akin to those who’ve come before her. Whereas Suki is a touch more emotional than Mirai and has her visions skewed more than once.
When it comes to Spirit, Suki takes the cake. Despite Mirai’s tendency to use magic, it’s not the first time she’s budded heads with Mirai, and she proves to have the stronger soul by canceling out Mirai’s World Ending Slash with her very own Giga Swipe. Sure, Mirai is strong, but when Suki can use the lightning attribute, which is in the 2nd to lowest tier of Special Attacks ever against a a crackling blade of raw chaos which is categorized in the 2nd strongest tier of Special Attacks with the added ability to splice through enemies in other dimensions with a blade of lightning that solely draws power from the user, it’s clear Suki can easily tango with Mirai.
As for Heart, believe it or not, both Mirai and Suki have incredible strong hearts after the Slayers Saga where they kept surpassing each other in sheer ability time and time against the toughest of foes. While it took Suki longer to get herself straight due to how spiteful she was becoming with Aile and the intense rivalry that came from it, Mirai’s lack of emotional attachment to her allies left her relatively weak until Aile got through to her and made her reanalyze their mission’s purpose. Only then did they both care enough about the humanity behind their actions did they have that extra push they were missing to get back their Limpid Prism fragments to defeat Eri the Summoner and Daichi the Slayer Reject along all they saved on their ventures throughout the multiverse they’re assigned to.
CONCLUSION // RULINGS + TECHNICALITIES
In the end, they both would use up all their energy trying to best one another, but Suki would either tie or be victorious by a hair, despite all of Mirai’s advantages.
Mirai wouldn’t be able to keep using the 3rd Reservoir of magic she unlocked due to how exceptionally fast Suki would be when racking up hit, especially with all that energy disruption going on with Mirai, and since they’re “friends” trying to make Suki kill her would be insanely difficult with all the times they joined bodies. Suki knows Mirai’s tricks, and Mirai knows Suki’s decision-making procedures. Knowing this, Mirai would stray from melee as much as possible so she could keep generating more magic than she tends to use.
While Mirai would have Suki beat in power using her 5th World Ending Slash/World Ending Inferno and variants of the spell due to the vast revisions made to it, and how quick Mirai can escape harms way nowadays, Suki would have a very hard time using anything from her Laceration Series of techniques, forcing Suki to play tactically and using a plethora of celestial-attributed attacks, which have always taken a lot of energy for Suki to use opposed to how easily she can apply the yin attribute the her attacks, but keeping those shadows down is the only way Suki’s going to get close without using too much stamina. Spamming won’t help too much.
When it comes to defense, Mirai uses spherical barriers, while Suki uses an aura cloak, so by default, Suki’s Release is faster than Mirai’s Cast Time. However, Mirai has a much easier time using her barrier like a lens than Suki does erupting energy from such a cloak especially with how little time it actually lasts. Plus, ever since Mirai faced a blatant user of Anti-magic she’s been more concerned about how she layers her barriers and projectiles to fend off opponents. This means, Suki’s usual trick of rippling the energy holding the barriers up gets countered by the 2nd layer’s inclusion. Suki would be lucky to evade a blast right after its revelation.
The only reason Suki would manage to get Mirai back into her civilian form and keep it that way would be to use a whip of lightning to change the angle which they fight and tag Mirai’s Shadow Magic so she can bypass the visual flood and close distance with the fruits of mastering Hyper Hare so once they’re both in their normal states and Mirai’s low on magic but physically stronger, she can countered with one final rupture of lightning to outrun Mirai’s resistances and close the battle out with a body slam. Mirai wouldn’t expect Suki to manage tagging the very shadows she can use to Shadow Tag her enemies for curses.
It should be noted Yin is stronger than Chaos, so Suki technically has her means of damaging Mirai even if she directly coats herself in space-time fabric, but with how easy Mirai could trade herself in or a clone could be used, it’s not too viable akin to how Suki knows Mirai can see through her afterimages but wouldn’t best her when it comes to slice affinity. So Entropy would only help so much, and it would take way too much time to try Spell-bounding Suki with magic.

Birthday On A Planet of Monsters [Lance x Reader]
HAPPY BIRTHDAY KAREN!!! (@crazymangaluv)I know it had been a little rough so I’ve been working on this and I hope it can brighten your mood. I also know you were talking about doing Fright Night at Universal for your bday so that kinda inspired the spookiness of this lmao! Love you!!! 🎊🎂🎉🍰❤️😘
(Also thank you @jxsontxdds for helping me with the spooky idea! YOU’RE THE BEST AND I LOVE YOU LINA!) ______
Honestly, this was not where you expected to spend your birthday. Aboard a Castle Space Ship, with two aliens, five lion robots, five paladins of Voltron, and caught in the middle of a full on universe war. Yeah, you imagined more of a dinner with family at your favorite restaurant. But hey, universe war is good too. Surely it’s exciting. Plus, those two aliens and five paladins had become quite like a second family to you.
Though, there was a certain Blue Paladin you wished you could have a more serious relationship with. But, you felt it’d never happen, especially with the amount of flirting the boy does. You just never felt your relationship would progress further than where it is. It’s something you had come to terms with and were glad with just being his friend...for now.
It was his idea though to give you the gift of going on a mission with the team as a birthday gift. You had been training a lot, and there was no doubt that you could hold your ground. So Lance, along with some help from Pidge, Hunk, and Keith, convinced Shiro to allow you out on a mission. When Lance told you, there was no way to hold yourself back from throwing your arms around him and chanting out a chain of ‘thank you’s and ‘you’re the best’s. Completely missing the light tinge of pink on his cheeks when you pulled away from him.
Before leaving Allura gifted you a proper suit to wear on the mission, it looking very similar to her own but a few color modifications. She knew of the plan and had gotten it for you in your favorite colors. When the others first saw you in it, you got plenty of compliments from them, but again, didn’t notice Lance’s blush so red it would give Keith’s lion a run for her money.
After a bit of recap on the plan, you learned it was a recon mission on a more of a mystery planet. There wasn’t much information on it, even in the Altean computer. It was kind of like a ghost planet, all it had was a name really and intel that the galra were there. Before heading out you stood a bit confused, not wondering who to go with. Shiro noticed, “Hey [F/n] why don’t you ride in Blue with Lance?” He nodded over to the Blue Paladin who smiled, liking the idea. “You got it!” Responding before following Lance to get to his lion.
“Are you excited?” He asked from his seat, you stood behind him, holding onto the back of the chair as he flew behind Pidge and the Green Lion. You nodded, “Yeah, thanks again for convincing Shiro that I’m ready. This is such a cool birthday gift!”
Lance grinned, “Yeah, you’ve been training really hard. I bet you’ll come on more missions. I’ll even teach you how to be a top notch sharpshooter like me.” He pointed to himself with his thumb, making you laugh. Gosh does he love your laugh. “Yeah Lance, I’d like that.” The rest of the ride to the planet was pretty fun, he told a lot of jokes and did his flirting. However, he seemed to be a bit more flirty than usual. Causing butterflies to erupt in your stomach.
Upon landing on the planet it was immediate that everyone realized why this place wasn’t known well. It was covered in dark forests that seemed to expand the entire planet. The sounds of creatures echoed through the trees. Giving it an ominous undertone. You were waiting for zombies and ghouls to jump out at any second. Subconsciously you moved closer to Lance, feeling safer being closer to him. Looking around everyone on the team felt a strange aura coming from the planet.
Shiro turned to everyone, looking at them through the visor of his helmet. “Stay together, this place is foreign and we don’t need to get separated. There are too many unknown variables so stay close.” Everyone nodded before following Shiro. Lance had his laser gun out as you hugged closer to him, armed with your sword. “You okay?” He asked quietly so the others wouldn’t here. You nodded, “Yeah, yeah fine.” He smirked, “Don’t worry, I’ll keep you safe then maybe you can treat me with a --” “LANCE!” Shiro said from the front, making Lance grumble under his breath.
After traveling further into the thick jungle-like planet, strange noises from creatures came every so often. Though you jumped and clinged to Lance’s arm when hearing a low growl come from what sounded like a foot away. “Lance, d-did you hear that?” Whispering to him. He pointed his blaster in that direction, slowly he crept toward it, not noticing the group still moving forward. Seeing a small fluffy, cat like creature. “Aw” He cooed, “Aren’t you just the cutest..” He started but soon heard the same growl you had heard. Looking up he saw a pair of glowing yellow eyes. He froze, seeing a creature of the same species but had to be almost 7 feet tall on all fours, some of its fur was replaced with scales, bearing it’s sword-like teeth. It roared as he stumbled back.
“Guys!” Looking to see the other paladins gone before noticing the creature jump out of the brush. Before it could land on Lance you jumped forward and swung your sword. It struck across it’s snout, making it roar in pain. Lance got back to his feet and grabbed your arm, “Come on!” You ran with him, the creature hot on your heels. Ducking and weaving through branches as the beast rampaged behind you both.
“Shit shit shit!” You followed behind Lance, but met a cliffside. It blocked your way with the monster barrelling at your back. “Lance! What do we do?!” Gripping his arm, forgetting your training to stay calm in situations. “I.. I’m not ready, I never should’ve come on this mission. This is my fault.” You babbled but Lance soon shushed you with his lips on yours. It successfully shut you up, “Stop [F/n], you were more than ready. It’s okay to be scared, I am too.”
He pulled away from you and yanked up his blaster. Pointing it toward where the pounding of the creature’s footsteps came from. “If I don’t make it out of this, know that I love you!” He yelled before warrior screaming and running at the creature. “What?! LANCE NO!” You yelled after him.
Right as Lance was about to blast the creature Pidge’s grappling hook came through the trees and hit the creature on the side it’s head. Distracting it as Shiro and Keith both charged at it. Shiro with his Galra arm and Keith with his sword, knocking it back as Hunk took the final blow with his cannon. Lance stood shocked and a bit agitated. “YOU GUYS STOLE MY MOMENT!” Yelling as the others turned to him. Keith cocked an eyebrow, “Um you’re welcome? We just saved you.” Hunk nodded, “I do believe a thanks is in order.”
Lance just pouted as Shiro and Pidge walked over to you. “Are you okay [F/n]?” Pidge asked while Shiro put a hand on your shoulder. But you just stood shocked, not saying anything until you ran and launched yourself at Lance. Wrapping your arms around his neck, “You love me?”
A deep blush spread on his face as he smiled and chuckled nervously. “Um, yeah. I do.” A wider grin spread on your face before cupping his cheeks and pulling his lips to yours. He was caught off guard but melted into it. The kiss was passionate and loving and the best gift you could’ve ever gotten.
Well... until someone broke it up by clearing their voice. Pulling away you saw Pidge and Hunk smirking, Keith looked disgusted, and Shiro, well, he seemed proud. “We should get back to the castle” Shiro said with a small smile, obviously happy for you both.
“That sounds like a great idea!” Hunk grinned, “Let’s go have some birthday cake!” At that everyone was on board and headed toward their lions. Though this time upon returning, you and Lance walked in with intertwined hands as he leaned over to whisper “Happy birthday my love.”

Top 10 RWBY Characters That Didn’t Appear in V4 (Some Spoilers)
Hello all my wandering ants of the colony. My name is Hunter the Ant, AKA Antr here to talk about an amazing show: RWBY!!!! That's right, we're going to be taking a short look at one of Rooster Teeth's shining works and talk about the possibilities of character appearances for Volume 5 and on. But before I begin, let me put a BIG spoiler alert for those of you who might want to get into it. For those of you who haven't watched the show and didn't heed my spoiler alert, allow me give a brief summary of the show: RWBY follows the growing chronicles of Ruby Rose, a teenage girl who wields a mechanical sythe training to one day become a trained warrior called huntsman/huntress. These warriors have the duty of protecting people from any threat that may come into being. Their primary enemy are monsters known as the creatures of Grimm; black and red, nightmarish beasts whose only function is to destroy life. These beings are attracted mainly to the negativity of mankind. Disrupt the peace, and Grimm will follow. Ruby plans on following in her family's footsteps and becoming a trained protector. Along side her is the rest of team Ruby: Weiss Schnee, heiress to the Schnee Dust Company and the groups typical "spoiled" rich girl; Blake Belladonna, former White Fang member, cat faunus, and the groups dark and brooding girl; and Yang Xiao Long, the cheerful but hot headed strong woman of the group, and Ruby's paternal half-sister. Together they form the title group: RWBY. Throughout the series, Team RWBY come in contact with both friends and enemies that propel the story; such as their close allies Team JNPR, or their enemies for the first three seasons who are (unofficially) know as Team CRME (or just Cinder's Faction if you want to include the character Neopolitan). These characters play a crucial role in the development of our main female leads, helping them grow as people, huntresses, and as team mates. With Volume 4 having just ended and Volume 5 announced to premier sometime in Autumn, there are certainly a hand-full of characters that people want to return or know more about. Some, obviously, are more popular than others. Today, we're going to be looking through the characters that either played an important supporting role in Volumes 1-3 and didn't appear in Volume 4, or characters that were mentioned/hinted at in one of the previous volumes that could have an impact in the story for Volume 5. These are in no particular order of importance. I'm just jotting them down as I go. Let's do it! ____________________________________________ 1. Leo Lionheart Its's no secret now that pretty much every major headmaster in the series is a reference to a major character from "The Wizard of Oz." Ozpin/Oscar is The Wizard, Glenda is The Good Witch, and Ironwood is The Tinman. Now, at the end of volume 4 we are introduced to the new headmaster of Haven Academy; the man we will be following and who will be helping our heroes for the duration of volume 5, Leo Lionheart. If his name isn't an obvious enough tip-off on who he's based off of, the fact that he's un-courageously sold out his school and the people of Mistral to Salem's lacky Watts should give you a clue (He's the cowardly lion guys). Ruby fans have been wondering about the other headmasters ever since the introduction to Ironwood back in Volume 2. Leo was actually first mentioned by name by Ironwood himself, however that wasn't until Chapter 11 of Volume 4. He was briefly mention by Qrow in "A Much Needed Talk," saying that they hadn't heard from him in a while; even before the attack on Beacon. While what we know on him is slim, what we do know doesn't paint him off as a very trustworthy ally. As stated before he has connection with Salem, and most likely will sellout information to save his own skin. BUUUT, knowing how the Cowardly Lion is in "The Wizard of Oz," hopefully he'll have a turning point in his character arc and gain the much needed bravery people expect from him. 2. Winter Schnee Winter Schnee is the elder sibling to both Shitley and Weiss, and the first born child to Jacques Schnee, owner of the Schnee Dust Company. To date, Winter has appeared in only two episodes, had a cameo appearance in a family picture, and was mention once towards the end of Volume 4. Along with this, she's also one of the few characters we had no prior lead up too before she was introduced. Hell, before she turned up we didn't even know Weiss had any family other than her father. All we know about Winter's position is that she works somewhere right under Ironwood in the Atlas military defenses. She's sort of on the same boat as Weiss, feeling as though it is her duty to protect and serve the people of Remnant in order to make up for her father's misdoings and reclaim the good Schnee name. However, while Weiss decided to become a huntress, Winter went for a more strict/ firm position of protection. At the end of Volume 4 Weiss and Ironwood mention that Winter is stationed in Haven, so it's a definite conclusion that we'll be seeing more interactions between her, Weiss, and possibly the rest of Team RWBY and RNJR. It'll be interesting to get a bit more info on her. What kind of authority she holds in the ranks. Not to mention, what kind of classified missions she's been up too since the fall of Beacon. Has Ironwood informed her of the growing situation? Only time will tell. 3. Neptune Vasilias (and the rest of Team SSSN Neptune was introduced in the first episode of Volume 2. He's a close friend to Sun Wukong, and was the first love interest to Weiss Schnee (still possibly is). Right from the start Neptune presented himself as a smooth intellectual who loves the ladies. And while we haven't seen him fight that much, the assumption could be made that he's one of the more unique huntsmen out there given his weapon of choice: An energy-shot gun that transforms into an energy guandao, which Then can be transformed into an electric-based trident. We got a lot of Neptune in Volume 2, a little in Volume 3, and then only a mention in Volume 4 with Sun saying he (and the rest of Team SSSN) are back in Mistral. Aside from his suave personality and crippling fear, we don't really know much about Neptune's background. In fact, he's one of the few characters who hasn't shown his semblance (others being Jaune, Taiyang, Mercury, Ironwood; just to name a few). Maybe in Volume 5 we'll get to see Neptune more in action AND get his semblance. I mean, if it can take Rooster Teeth four volumes to get to Ren's semblance, I think we can get Nepune's. Plus, it would be interesting to see how his interactions with Weiss would go after her time of self-empowerment back home. Will she still be interested in his type? Unlike Atlas folk, he was there on the ground with her after-all. Who know? 4. Penny Polendina Yes, I know Penny is "dead," but the big argument against that is that...she's a robot. Not human in any sense. And I know what all of you are going to be throwing in my face: "Well, she was able to generate an Aura. That obviously makes her unique." And yes, you would be right in the sense that all beings with an Aura have their own individual and unique Auras (excluding the Schnee's) and essentially have a soul, but remember the information we got in Volume 3, Chapter 6. Atlas had been experiment with Auras and all sorts of tech to manipulate and transfer things of that essence. We don't know under what circumstances Penny was created. We don't know how she's generating her Aura, or who created her in the first place. All we knew was that she was a robot who was under protection of Ironwood and sent to Vale to enter the Vytal Festival in order to see if she was ready. I can't be the only one to think this, but...wouldn't Penny's creator or Ironwood have kept the original schematics and blueprints on how to make another robot. Or better yet, REPAIR the broken robot. Like I said, we don't know how Penny is generating her Aura. Just because her robot body got damaged doesn't mean her Aura was. If it was implanted in her the first time, It could again. We never saw what happened to her body after everything that happened during the fall of Beacon. You really don't think that the government wouldn't go and collect the pieces? This is just a personal wish, but I really hope that some how they take Penny's dwindling Aura and put it in a new body. She reactivates, but doesn't remember everything fully. She's sent to Ironwood to continue being watched and slowly her memories start to come back of what happened. She then escapes from Atlas (which is currently under lock-down and having it's own travel ban) and goes to find her friends. She learns what happened to Pyrrha, and offers to become part of Team JNPR. It's only a wish though. It'll probably never happen....... 5. Neopolitan Oh Neo. To date, Neo is one of RWBY's most mysterious characters; that title formally belonging to Yang's mom Raven, but now Neo is pretty much on the same level as Summer Rose. We know literally NOTHING about her. All we know is that she works for Cinder (formerly Torchwick), and possibly Salem. Other than that she's pretty much a mystery. I mean, how are you supposed to learn anything about a character who has no voice? Yeah. To non-RWBY fans who don't know, Neopolitan is a mute. Probably because her concept from Monty Oum was so sudden into the universe, that they didn't have time to find an appropriate voice actor. And by then, she'd already made a name for herself as the silent, cocky wing-woman to Torchwick. At the end of Volume 3, the last we saw of Neo was her floating off of Ironwood's stolen ship into the sky of crowded griffins and nevermores. Presumably she landed far off from where all the action was happening, and seeing how everything was going down south she made her escape. Now, whether or not she returned to Cinder after all this is unknown. Neo's loyalty seemed to be more towards Torchwick then anyone else, but she still has connections. Maybe she took over Torchwicks crime organization after his death. Or maybe she's laying low. Hiding from Cinder so she won't be dragged any further than she already is. I know at this point in the series things had to be written out to make way for newer challenges. Obviously, the need for an underground crime network isn't as important now that our heroes have an actual threat, but Neo felt like more than just a common criminal. I mean, she was able to take out Yang with ease in Volume 2. And she had no problem dealing with Ruby...up 'til the point she blew her off the ship. I'm just saying that Neo seemed to be more skilled than most of the other villains we got at the time. Plus, considering how popular she, I don't think they'd just write her off as "missing in action" I think she'll make her return. And we won't even hear her coming. 6. Glynda Goodwitch Glynda was the first official huntress we saw in the show (Ruby herself doesn't count). As we've seen on multiple occasions, she one of the more powerful huntresses. Her abilities (and possibly her semblance) gives her almost magical abilities beyond any other normal huntress we've seen. She's not using dust, and she's not a maiden. She's just a strict, kick-ass lady with an awesome cape and zero tolerance for tomfoolery. Yet, we didn't get any of her for Volume 4. We saw a reused clip of her broadcast on TV of her trying to rebuild Vale and reclaim Beacon, but nothing else. As the woman who was pretty much Ozpin's second in command you'd think they give her at least one line of dialogue in the new volume. Hell, Port and Oobleck had more time on screen than she did. Well, Oscar has now emerged from Ozpin's dust, and now has to help with all the madness that's going on. Considering Glynda is one of the few people who was informed on everything, chances are that when she hears Ozpin has come back and is in the body of a child, her reaction will be about the same as Qrow's. She knows all this craziness. She probably knows more then Qrow and Ironwood considering how she's literally at Ozpin's side majority of the time. She probably knew this was going to happen and is now waiting for any word to get to her about it. She has a duty in Vale to regulate and control the Grimm outbreak, but any chance she gets she'll be on a one way trip to find Oscar and Qrow and help in any way possible. It would be awesome if Qrow and Glynda became Oscar's mentors, helping him become the new Ozpin. Qrow would teach the basics, and Glynda would perfect them. Seems like a good combo to me. 7. Adam Taurus The Volume 4 opening deceived us! We thought we were going to get a Blake vs. Adam fight, and the most we get from Adam in the entire volume is a mention from Salem and Yang's Nightmare. Though, all that means is that we'll be getting that fight in Volume 5. Though, that makes me a bit worried. Not for him, but for everyone else. Adam was first introduced in the "Black Trailer." He didn't make his series debut until the end of Volume 2. He's the leader of the faunus terrorist group "The White Fang," a once peaceful but now violent organization that wants to destroy mankind so that the faunus species can be the dominant ones. Blake also used to serve right under him and be part of his villainous schemes. As of right now, we don't know how Adam came into power, why he's so bitter and extreme, or really anything about his past. All we know is that he had a thing for Blake and he cut off Yang's arm...what a resume. And now that she's rejected him, he's going berserk and vowing to kill everyone she loves to prove...to prove...I don't what it's meant to prove, but it does show how evil he is! Obviously, Adam has eyes EVERYWHERE. Thanks to Ilia, Adam now knows that Blake took a stop back home in Menagerie. That's probably not a good thing for her parents. And now with Blake leaving for Haven, Adam's probably going to get word of that and meet her there to continue his destructive rein over her. Aside from Blake, Yang would also be facing her anxiety towards him and getting back at him for cutting her arm off. It would be a scary, yet awesome scene to have the two fighting it out. Though, I think in the end Adam would still win, and it would be up to Blake to try and save her again. The point is, Adam will be coming back. He's too bad to let go. 8. Summer Rose Unlike Penny, I know Summer isn't going to return. Obviously, a character who died before the story even began can't magically show up five seasons later, however there's still a ton of story they could do with her. Literally since Volume 2 and 3 people have been begging for a Team STRQ flashback episode. We'd finally be able to see a living Summer Rose, and possibly see where things went so very very wrong in their team history. Maybe get a little info into Her and Tai's relationship after Raven ditched him. Who knows!?! I can only hope they give us this much needed flashback. 9. Unknown Scientist The assumption can be made that this unknown scientist might indeed be Penny's "father." Considering he was watching the tournament, and his reaction to her sudden death, it is likely to be true. But what I'm surprised about, is the lack of discussion about him, and the lore that comes from knowing who he is and how Penny came into being. I came into the show a bit late, I must admit, but still the amount of talk that goes into him is staggeringly low from what I expected. Penny is based on the tale of Pinocchio; no secret about that. She's a robot who's only partially "alive" and used mechanical swords attached to puppet-like strings. Since Penny was made around this fairytale that means that this man can only be one person: Geppetto. He's the one who built her, so obviously he's the "puppeteer" who created a false being to act like the child he never had. And that's all well and good, but there's two more major characters to the Pinocchio tale ): The Blue Fairy and The Talking Cricket (I know his name is Jimmeny, but I don't know if she's based of the fairytale, or the Disney interpretation). The woman who gave Pinocchio life in the first place and the person who gave him moral advice.. Who are they, and what connection do they have with our unknown scientist? Is she the source of Penny's Aura? Was she once a living being who had her Aura sucked out of her and placed in the body of a robot? Di Penny have another person who looked out for her? Was that who her partner Ciel Soleil was from Volume 3, episode 5? I'm hoping we get some hints in Volume 5, but knowing how Rooster Teeth and Monty setup character reveals, it's probably going to be another volume-and-a-half before we even get mention of him again. A man can only dream, and wish upon a star. 10. Weiss' Mother I'm going to make a wild claim here and say that maybe, just maybe, Weiss' mother is the Winter Maiden. I know, I know, it seems TOO obvious to be true, but there are tons of signs that could lead anyone to believe that she might be the Winter Maiden. First, her location. The Schnee's reside in Atlas. As we learned from Qrow, Atlas (formerly Mantel) is basically a frozen tundra of a continent. It's equivalent to our Antarctica. Given the Maidens abilities, wouldn't it make since for them to reside in areas that correspond to the season they represent? I mean, take Amber for example. If you look past the fog (and the awesome fight going on in the foreground), what do you see? While we don't know where exactly she was when she was attacked by Cinder, the setting indicates it was an area of changing natural colors. Almost as if it were Autumn in the area she was. It corresponded perfectly with her because she was the Fall Maiden. And now our heroes are in Haven, an area that has fresh green flora and fauna everywhere. And the next Maiden we know Salem is looking for is Spring. Seems pretty likely that maybe we'll get our next Maiden in Haven. Just like how it seems pretty likely that our Summer Maiden would reside somewhere hot, like Vacuo, and our Winter Maiden somewhere cold, like Atlas. Next, the daughter's power choice and names. Ever since Volume one, Weiss has been referred too as something icy; most notably her nickname "Ice Queen" which Qrow also calls Winter. In the beginning we all assumed they were just called that because of their cold personalities and where they came from, but with the introduction of the Maidens, perhaps this is a hints for something else. Their powers may also be a hint of their mother's Maiden prestige. Of all the types of dust Weiss has been shown using, the one she uses the most is ice. Wouldn't it make some sense that the reason she uses ice more often then fire, wind, electricity, etc. is because she took after and is copying her mother's abilities? Weiss never said she hated her mother. She never even mentioned her. There's something here. Lastly, she didn't appear in Volume 4 at all. Volume 4 was the basically the volume of FAMILY. We had Yang with her father, Blake meeting up with her parents, Ruby traveling with Qrow, Qrow interacting with Raven, and then Weiss with ONLY her Father. Why? Weiss' mother is the only living parent of Team RWBY to not show up on screen. I don't think she's unimportant. Literally all the parents have had an impacting role in their children's lives and in the setting. Weiss' mother IS important, but her time hasn't come yet. They're saving her for when the hunt for the Winter Maiden begins. When will such a hunt begin? Probably not for a good 2-3 volumes at least; 5-6 if they decide to go for the Summer Maiden before her. All we can do is wait. ____________________________________________ Well, that's all the characters I can muster up for now. What do you think? Do you think any of these characters will contribute a bigger role in Volume 5? Leave a comment below and tell me what you think. Until next time, this is Hunter the Ant signing off!

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Character Predictions
Let’s take a brief detour from films and narrative analysis and talk about games, or rather a specific game. Or, I suppose, let’s do both at the same time, because the game I’m more excited about than any other this year is the latest in my favourite party game meets intense fighter series, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
I apologise to those of you who have stumbled across this and have no idea what I’m talking about, because I’m pretty sure the next few thousand words or so will be impenetrable gibberish. But, if you’re riding the hype train along with me and share my passionate excitement for this series, or you’re still curious and want to know more, then read on.
Super Smash Bros. is an ongoing series from Nintendo in which you get to play as some of their most popular characters from their numerous iconic franchises as you duke it out with a group of other players in intense, frantic battles. For a series with a relatively simple premise, it’s gained a deep level of appreciation from fans of all backgrounds, as it draws players from a number of different fanbases of the different games it represents, branching out to even include characters from third party companies like Sonic, Pac-Man, Mega Man, and so on. Whether you’re a player who enjoys bringing the game out at casual get-togethers with friends and family, or you’re a competitive player who obsesses over knowing the game inside and out, there’s something universally exciting about seeing a game that celebrates so many franchises and their characters, settings, and music.
And now there’s a new game coming out, which means people are losing their minds over speculation concerning which new characters we might get to play as, and I am certainly no different. We’ve had a number of new characters already announced including Ridley and King K.Rool, fan favourite villains who players have been clamouring for since the days of Super Smash Bros. Melee in 2001. Their inclusion makes it feel like all bets are off; in the past, expectations and hopes were tempered by thoughts like ‘ah, that character would never make it in’, but now, if sodding Cloud from Final Fantasy VII can make it, then anyone can.
So, because everyone’s been making their prediction/wish lists and I’ve spent far more time obsessing over this game than I care to admit, I figured I’d have a little fun and throw together a list of my own character predictions. If you’ve been checking out other people’s theories and videos on the subject, then I’m sure many of these picks will sound familiar, and, on the one hand, I do worry that this post will look like a shallow attempt to regurgitate the same information that other people have gone over for the sake of jumping onto the bandwagon. But truthfully, I just wanted to make this list for the fun of getting it out there and seeing how many I end up getting right once we know the game’s final roster of characters. The way I see it, I’d be writing this list for myself anyway, so I might as well share it with anyone who’s interested.
This list is meant to represent likely candidates rather than necessarily my all-time dream picks. This is who I expect will make it in, not who I hope beyond hope to see in this game (otherwise the list would just say ‘Banjo-Kazooie’ ten times). Even so, there are one or two characters on the list which I will admit have less of a chance, and most likely got as far as they did in my considerations due to preferential bias. Nevertheless, there are enough points in their favour that I stand by dedicating a spot to them. And at the end of the day, this is my own damn list on the dumb fighting game about cartoon characters, so try not to worry about it.
*So how many more new characters do you think there’ll be?*
This is the question a lot of people who’ve been closely following news on the game have been wondering. Masahiro Sakurai, the series director whose dry offbeat sense of humour and difficult to predict eccentricity has made him just as beloved to Smash fans as some of the Nintendo mascots featured in his games, has gone on record to say that, since Ultimate’s remit was to bring every single character in the series’ history back for this ‘ultimate’ instalment, we shouldn’t expect too many newcomers. Considering the insane amount of content already revealed for this game, many have said that’s a fair deal, with a common sentiment being that the game could ship with just what we’ve heard about it thus far, and we’d still be over the moon with what it’s given us.
However, Sakurai is a notorious workaholic whose obsessive dedication to his work has led him to exceed our expectations time and time again in Smash’s 20-year history. Since making that statement, Sakurai has shown off 5 new characters, and hinted that there is more to follow. What helps is that Sakurai and his team have found a creative solution which enables them to include an impressive number of new characters without cutting too much into development time in the form of ‘Echo Fighters’. Echo Fighters, or ‘Echoes’, is a term coined by Sakurai to describe characters who are technically new to the series, but whose set of moves are closely based on a pre-existing fighter. This means we get the option of playing a slight variation on a classic fighter who, through a different surface appearance and a few of their own unique animations, feels like their own distinct character.
So, what this boils down to is that, while Sakurai may mean it when he says we’re getting fewer brand new movesets than we have in past instalments, we are nevertheless getting a good number of new representatives from different series through this time and money-saving measure. While I’m sure there are some critics of this approach out there, the overwhelming consensus on this is that it’s a win-win situation which takes some of the weight off the developers while simultaneously providing the players with more characters who may not have necessarily made it in otherwise.
To answer this section’s original question, I’m inclined to think that, on top of the 4 ‘newcomers’ (characters with brand new movesets) we’ve seen so far, we’ll get 2 or 4 more, as trends suggest it will be an even number. As for echoes, who we’ve been receiving at a surprising rate, I think we’ll see 4 or 6 more on top of the 4 we’ve already seen. This leadup to the list has taken long enough, and this thing is going to be monstrously big already, so let’s not waste any more time on the boring stuff and get straight to the list. I’m setting it in stone:
These are my final predictions for the rest of the characters we’re going to see in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Newcomers
#1: Decidueye
Artwork by R-nowong.
Pokémon is Nintendo’s biggest franchise after Mario, so it gets reps. The latest generation of Pokémon, Sun & Moon, did well with people and sold decently, and Decidueye, the final evolved form of the grass starter Rowlet, is arguably the most popular of the three Sun & Moon starters, much like Greninja was in the previous generation, who secured a spot in Super Smash Bros. 4. Decidueye also has the added bonus of embodying an elemental type that hasn’t been represented by a solo Pokémon fighter in Smash before – grass. On top of that, he’s got some ghost-type moves and a signature arrow attack in his toolkit which he can use, and with the added appeal of being a mysterious hooded owl warrior who can fly about, his potential moveset writes itself. He was even in Pokémon’s standalone fighting game Pokken, so yeah; he’s probably the safest bet on this entire list. On the other hand, that flame cat wrestling heel starter Incineroar from the same generation has also slowly risen in popularity, so I could see him also being a possibility. But my money’s on the spooky Robin Hood-in-feathers, Decidueye.
#2: Geno
Artwork by jordanewing.
You’re either completely oblivious to whoever the hell this character is or you’re rolling your eyes and saying you’re sick to death of hearing about Geno – there is no middle ground.
A wooden toy puppet given life by a … star spirit, I think? I’m not sure, I’m only halfway through my playthrough of the game right now. Anyway, Geno is a one-time character from a SNES Mario RPG game called, er, Super Mario RPG. The game was a collaboration between Nintendo and Square, and represents the spiritual beginnings of other Mario RPG series such as Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi games on handheld systems. Of the characters unique to Super Mario RPG, Geno stands out; he’s mystical and dedicated to his mission to reform the Star Road in order to make it so that people’s wishes can once again come true, meaning the point where he joins the party also introduces the player to the game’s central quest. With his innocent wooden doll appearance and contrastingly enigmatic cape, profile, and gun-arm weapon, he seems like the kind of character who’d result from a fairy-tale colliding with a Final Fantasy plot, making him a suitable representative for a game made through the collaborative efforts of Nintendo and Square.
Speaking bluntly, Geno has little-to-no relevance in this day and age, having only appeared once as one of several main playable characters in a game that released over 20 years ago. Even so, he’s a character with such appeal that he’s not only been a fan favourite request for Smash since the days of Melee, but he’s also someone Sakurai himself has wanted to include for a long time now. When people talk about Geno’s game, it’s always with a loving, nostalgic fondness, and, having made my way through a decent portion of the game, I can see why. Also, appearing only once in a classic game that came out decades ago has never stopped the Ice Climbers from being a series staple for Smash, so I don’t think Geno’s solitary appearance necessarily hinders his chances. Since Sakurai seems to be using Ultimate to grant some longstanding fan requests and finally include things he’s been meaning to do for years, I’d say the odds have never been in Geno’s favour more than they are right now.
#3: Bandana Waddle Dee
Artwork by rongs1234.
Weird name, I know. Still, Waddle Dee is the most enduring and recognisable enemy type in the Kirby series, and there’s been one Waddle Dee in particular who’s tagged along in Kirby’s adventures for several decades now, and he’s known as ‘Bandana Waddle Dee’. Donning a bandanna and wielding a spear as his weapon, he’s pretty much a perfect melting pot between Kirby’s adorable friendliness, Meta-Knight’s cool proficiency with an actual weapon, and King Dedede, being his underling / dogsbody who’s probably more competent and reliable than he is.
There’s not a lot of complicated reasoning as to why Bandana Waddle Dee is both likely and deserving to make it in. The Kirby franchise is a big part of Nintendo, and of the more prominent in-house series in Smash, it stands out as one that could do with a little more representation. Being stuck at 3 characters seems like a loose end in Smash, as you only need one more inclusion to have enough characters for a traditional 4-player battle. Bandana Waddle Dee makes the most sense for this series as he’s just a delightful recurring character with the potential for a unique moveset, and after Kirby, Dedede, and Meta-Knight, he’s the next most recognisable character in the series. It’s high time Kirby got another character, and Waddle Dee fits the ticket perfectly.
#4: Paper Mario
If Link gets three versions of himself in this game, then Mario can have a third one too, and darnit, Paper Mario has paid his dues! As far from grace as he’s fallen, he is still an ongoing property, and his first two … eh what the hell, let’s thrown in Super Paper Mario in there too and say his first three games are still wonderful and a part of Nintendo’s history that’s fondly remembered by many and stands out as something that is yet to be acknowledged by Nintendo’s flagship crossover series beyond a simple stage.
Admittedly, if one Mario RPG character were to get in, then I’d oddly expect the one-time Geno to get in over this character, even if he does have a series of games to his name. But I think Paper Mario as a series has enough unique qualities to its aesthetic and characteristic mechanics to distinguish itself from the rest of the Mario franchise, including the other Mario RPG games. As such, I think bringing both of them in would represent different properties well enough. If I’m being honest with myself, of the four proposed newcomers, Paper Mario’s the least likely to make it. Geno’s got the edge on him, especially if space is a premium for new characters. But then again, they have brought back the Paper Mario stage for Ultimate, so here’s hoping that Mr. Game & Watch has a new two-dimensional best friend joining him in the next Smash.
Echoes
#5: Isabelle
With Animal Crossing being unquestionably one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises today, eclipsing veteran series like Starfox, Metroid, and F-Zero, it’s frankly staggering that Ultimate, with a roster that currently sits at 70+ characters, only has one representative from this flagship franchise. I mean, I get it; Animal Crossing is a relaxing, peaceful game about life in a quiet village where the biggest conflicts are ensuring you make your appointment to see your dog neighbour tomorrow afternoon like you promised and paying off your debt to the local ruthless raccoon landowner. It’s difficult to envision any of the characters from this series engaging in battle with Solid Snake or an anime protagonist with a six-foot broadsword. But Smash is a ridiculous series that embraces cartoonish logic, so the incongruency of these series is a big part of the fun. And the fact that Villager is in shows that there’s precedent for a fun as hell character with a slice-of-life moveset that kicks ass.
Isabelle would be a terrific choice for a second Animal Crossing representative, and if character spaces are tight enough that she can’t make it into the fully-fledged newcomer list, then she could still easily incorporate Villager’s moves. There are a ton of mainstay Animal Crossing characters who would also be very fun to play as like K.K. Slider, Tortimer, and Tom Nook, but since New Leaf came out in 2013, Isabelle has been a prominent face for the series. She’s been heavily featured in Animal Crossing’s various off-shoots since then, as well as in promotional material and crossovers like the excellent Mario Kart 8 dlc. Plus, with Smash’s roster being so heavily taken up with male characters, we could really do with more female characters being featured. Isabelle is not only one of my most hopeful newcomers, she’s also one of the most likely to make it.
And to that one person who I know is reading: Jeremiah is lovely, but I’m sad to say I just don’t see him making it in … just yet.
#6: Black Shadow
Wolf’s back, DK and Diddy have K.Rool, Samus has two villains from her series to contend with now; bad guys are currently all the rage in Smash, and while I’ll admit to being completely inexperienced with F-Zero, Black Shadow seems like a suitable pick for a much-needed rival to Smash’s resident Captain Falcon. As a dead series that still receives a ton of love from fans yet only has one representative in Smash at the moment, F-Zero could do with a little push into the spotlight. Black Shadow’s design isn’t much to write home about by itself, but when paired against Captain Falcon, I think there’s some potential. His ‘Night on Bald Mountain’ look and pompous smirk could be a fun personality to play with, and I’m positive that Ultimate’s stellar team of animators could make him stand out. With Ganondorf becoming more and more his own thing, Black Shadow could honestly just take Ganondorf’s moveset from Melee with one or two changes, and he’d be a terrific Echo Fighter of Falcon that’s good to go.
#7: A Metal Gear Solid representative, most likely Raiden
I adore the Metal Gear series. Its outlandishly over-the-top military action and exaggerated characters, its cool-as-hell protagonists, and its legendary music make it a special series in games. Here’s the thing though: I’ve never played them. Well, I’ve played and completed the first Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2. Anything from Metal Gear Solid onwards, however, I’ve yet to play through. I was first introduced to the series when Snake was announced for Brawl, and since then, I’ve listened to many pieces of music from the series, enjoyed hearing passionate fans talk about the games, and learned and heard things about the series which make me positive that I’m going to love these games when I finally take the time to sit down and play them, ludicrous plot and all.
So, since Konami, the company who owns the rights to the series, have not only okayed Snake coming back to this upcoming game, but also allowed Sakurai to have both a newcomer and an echo from their Castlevania series, I reckon Snake’s chances of gaining an echo as a partner have gone up. The most likely candidate is Raiden, the protagonist from Metal Gear Solid 2 who has an important role in the franchise, but as I’ve yet to play a good portion of this series, I honestly can’t say for sure who would be the best echo. Maybe someone he contends with, to fit the theme of villains and rivals I mentioned earlier, like Liquid? Snake’s former mentor turned villain Big Boss would be cool too, especially if it’s him when he’s an old soldier, as we could do with some badass old characters in the game. My favourite pick, however, is Meryl. Her design is cool as hell, she seems to be a significant character in the series, and as I mentioned earlier, we need to even out the gender imbalance in this roster. At the end of the day, however, I would be happy to see any of these guys make it in.
#8 Tails…or Shadow, if we must
I know that the most likely second Sonic representative via echo fighter at the moment is Shadow. His assist trophy is nowhere to be seen, he fits Sonic’s model and moveset, and he’d fit the bill of the current trend of rivals / villains making the cut. But… really? Do we really want to go with the edgy teen version of Sonic that once starred in a dreadful game that took itself too seriously and filled a cartoon universe about fast-moving animals with realistic guns? …alright, to be fair, when that came out I unironically loved it, played the hell out of it, and I still have a soft spot for it, so I wouldn’t even be unhappy to see Shadow make it in as a true guilty pleasure of a character.
But come on, as much as I’m not the biggest fan of Sonic games from any era, I think that the character deserves to have his version of Luigi in, and that’s Tails. He’s been there since practically the beginning, has a design that’s always been appealing and avoided becoming dated (or as good as this franchise can manage), and despite nominally playing different to Sonic with his flying propeller tails, he moves very similarly to Sonic. Just make him a little slower on the ground, have him control better in the air, and shift some of his aerial attacks around, and you’d have a decent echo. Say what you will about the Sonic series, but it is iconic to the videogame medium, and Tails is a big part of the picture whenever you consider Sonic as a franchise.
But whatever, put grungy Sonic with guns in instead if you want, that should be good for a laugh.
#9: Ken/Akuma
This one is difficult to call. Ryu’s my favourite fighting game character of all time, and his inclusion in the previous Smash Bros. as DLC was a significant moment that I adored seeing come to pass. In his own series, he’s had no shortage of characters based off of him with similar movesets, so looking through the range of options for echo fighters from his series has yielded two likely options. Ken, as a pallet swap version of Ryu with more fire effects added to his moves with slightly different properties, is pretty much the perfect template for an Echo Fighter. He’s got a sweet musical theme that I believe was already in the previous Smash, and he’d be a ton of fun to play as.
Still, there’s one other person who has a chance of snagging the Rye Echo Fighter slot away from him: Akuma. A fan favourite and Ryu’s dark opposite with an ultimate move that translates to “Wrath of the Raging Demon”, there’s no denying that Akuma would be an impressive villain to include to Ultimate’s expanding catalogue of dark rivals. I’d be ecstatic with any new representation from Street Fighter, so calling this one is tough. I’ll go with Ken, as he just embodies the concept of an echo fighter perfectly. But, if I’m wrong and we get Akuma, that would be cool too. Or Sakura, she’d be awesome as well. Just as long as it’s anyone other than Dan Hibiki.
#10: Impa
Legend of Zelda is one of my all-time favourite game series, providing me with numerous all-time classics that have been some of the most formative games of my life. But despite its flagship status as a Nintendo franchise, and despite having 6 characters in Smash already, it’s in an awkward position when it comes to who else you could put into the game. The series has no shortage of striking, memorable, and well-loved characters, but the format of the series means that each game is more or less a fresh start, introducing us to a new version of Hyrule with a fresh batch of inhabitants and different iterations of a handful of enduring characters, namely Link, Zelda, and Ganon/Ganondorf. What this means is that, while you can have different versions of Link and Zelda from different games in Smash, there’s not a lot of options for character picks who have a lasting presence in the series beyond the one game they’re featured in. Of course, this sort of reasoning doesn’t necessarily have to mean anything, and Sakurai could have just said screw it and thrown in a fan favourite like Skull Kid, but it’s difficult to say if there’s much of a chance of that happening.
What I can say is that there is one recurring character in Legend of Zelda who has yet to be included in Smash: Impa. She’s appeared in many different forms throughout the series, and while I would love to see her old nurse / attendant to Princess Zelda appearance be the inspiration for a creative moveset, I think it’s more likely we’ll see one of her more warrior like iterations using most of Sheik’s moves with the occasional change here or there. She could resemble her Skyward Sword appearance, or her impressive design from Hyrule Warriors, but either way, I think she would make a great addition to the series. She’s more representation for not only Legend of Zelda, but for formidable older women as well, who I think could do with a lot more prominence in all areas of fiction, let alone Smash.
And that was my lengthy list! We’ll be back to film reviews soon, but if you’ve made it this far, thank you for indulging me and letting me try this out. If you’ve been absorbing as much fan speculation content on this upcoming game as I have, I’m sure you’ve seen a lot of what I’ve talked about today discussed in other places, but I nevertheless felt a need to write all of this down and put it out there. So, for those of you who have no idea what I’ve spent thousands of words going on about but have nevertheless read to the end, thank you so much! It’s always a lot of fun to try something new and different. In fact, if I was to narrow down what I love about Super Smash Bros. represents as a series, it would be how much it celebrates and delights in the endless possibilities of creativity. There’s so much to enjoy out there, and it’s all so different; it can be overwhelming at times, especially when you feel the impossible need to try and keep up with media, but it can also be immensely uplifting and inspiring to see just how many different experiences there are out there. I’ll keep trying to seek out those new experiences in all aspects of my life, because there’s so much art and content out there to inspire you, whatever your field of interest might be.
Of course, once December 7th rolls around, it’s quite likely I’ll turn around on that and play nothing but Smash. Ah well, we can but try.

Cable is Now the Marvel U’s Top Time Cop, Says James Robinson
Time travel is a reality in the Marvel Universe, which means history is constantly vulnerable to ruthless temporal opportunists who want to change the past –or even the future — for their own gain. Fortunately, there’s one Marvel hero who’s especially suited to tracking down villainous time travelers and rectifying the historical messes they make; the time traveling, mutant soldier from the future, Cable. This April, he’ll embrace his role as Marvel’s top time cop as writer James Robinson and artist Carlos Pacheco expand Marvel’s “ResurrXion” line of titles with an all new “Cable” ongoing series.
RELATED: Cable Explained – The Importance of Deadpool 2’s Time-Traveling Mutant
In the series’ opening arc, Cable will undergo a baptism of fire as he steps into his new role to pursue a new villain out to manipulate the time stream and seize a weapon of ultimate power. CBR spoke with Robinson about this new villain, the weapon they’re after, and the settings Cable will visit as he hunts his quarry across time.
CBR: Cable is, of course, a powerful and prominent mutant, but he’s also perhaps the Marvel Universe’s premier time traveling hero. I understand that aspect of the character will be sort of the central focus of your new series.
Yes. Time travel has always been a part of his makeup. He comes and goes, from the present to the future and back again. Admittedly, sometimes he has more control over that then others. In this series, we’ve decided to make him become sort of Marvel’s mutant time cop. He’s traveling time and fixing problems in the past, and one of such problem comprises the first arc of the series.

So if I were to do a Hollywood-style elevator pitch for this new book it would be something like “’Doctor Who’ as a futuristic soldier.”
Yeah, “’Doctor Who’ meets ‘Time Cop.’” That’s very much what we’re doing. Imagine a Cable movie where you don’t need to know very much about the character in order to enjoy the story. That’s the approach we’re taking.
Many of the temporal problems Cable encounters in this initial arc will stem from a new villain you created for the series: Conquest. What can you tell us about the character?
He’s a power hungry, weapons-centric technocrat who lives up to his name. He’s discovered an ancient weapon called the Time Sword. It was part of a war many eons ago between the Eternals and the Inhumans. It was broken into five pieces and scattered throughout time, and Conquest is going after those fragments in order to reassemble the sword. If he obtains it, he’ll be able to control and manipulate time and reality in a way that would make him tantamount to a god. Cable is trying to stop him.
What can you tell us about the initial sort of rivalry between Cable and Conquest? How do they view each other?
Well, they’ve just learned of each others’ existence at the start of the series, each coming from a different future reality, so they’re pretty much enemies. One’s the good guy, the other is the bad guy. Simple, clean motivations, like a Western or an ancient myth.
There’s a central plot of Cable trying to stop Conquest, so I imagine there’s a lot of different settings as he pursues the villain through time.
Yes, we’ll have a variety of settings and periods in history in our first arc which is about this sort of cat and mouse style chase through time as Cable tries to prevent Conquest from reassembling this ultimate weapon before he does.
Art by Carlos Pacheco, colors by Jesus Aburtov
The first issue takes place in the Old West and also in Feudal Japan. We visit other periods too as the story progresses but I can’t talk about them without spoiling things.
Each issue will have a cliffhanger jump in time akin to shows like “Time Tunnel” and “Quantum Leap.” That’s part of the fun of the series.
A trip to the Old West of course begs the question of will we get some guest appearances from some of Marvel’s Old West characters like the Two-Gun Kid? Or the Rawhide Kid?
Not this time. We’re trying to keep this a very clean, direct story that focuses solely on Cable. That’s not to say that in the future (pun intended) we won’t see characters from Marvel’s past or future crossing Cable’s path.
What can you tell us about Cable’s exploits in Feudal Japan?
In one of the points of time Cable visits in his pursuit of Conquest, he’ll be fighting augmented Ronin and stopping them from the evil path they’ve embarked on with the advanced technology that Conquest has given him. At the same time we’re trying to be as historically accurate as we can with the setting and the historical aspect of it.
What’s it like putting a futuristic soldier like Cable against backdrops like the Old West and Feudal Japan?
That incongruity of having Cable appear there is fun. We’re all familiar with the scenario of the town that’s been over run by bad guys and the good guy enters the bar and there’s a confrontation. When Cable enters that bar though suddenly there’s a feeling of, “What the hell is going to happen next.”
We have the future warrior with his cybernetic arm and his big guns popping up at various points in history, and it leads to some unique and fun scenarios. We don’t see this approach very often with Cable.
I want to help define Cable’s role in the Marvel Universe. So to make him this sort of time cop that has to fix these things is a nice, organic role for him that makes sense when you look at his history.
Finally, what’s it like working with veteran artist Carlos Pacheco, a guy who can and has drawn almost everything. Have you worked with him before?
No, I’ve been waiting 20 years to work with the guy. It’s very exciting to collaborate with him now. He’s brilliant. It’s a thrill to see him bring to life these different periods of history. In terms of capturing the man out of time, future warrior in these ancient worlds aspect he’s doing an utterly spectacular job.
So it’s been a great thrill to finally do this. He’s another name I can cross off my bucket list of artists to work with. To get a chance to work with him means the world to me.
