BELATED asura appreciation week #2 (i am slowly working my way thru these ok i spent most of my day at a ren faire) - "Do you have an Inquest OC? How did they end up in the Inquest?"

oh boy. i have a LOT of inquest characters actually! but here's these two because they're my main two, and also because i actually had an old wip i could finish up for this lmao

gunner graduated from synergetics, with a focus in mists research. his theses and projects hinged largely around the insights he gained while in the mists, but for obvious reasons he did not disclose his experiences or the fact he's a rata novan, and as a result a lot of his research ended up getting brushed up as unfounded and unhinged, which made him very bitter. he desperately needed the funding money for his huge ambitions of trying to rip open the mists (and find his dad), so he ended up getting into the inquest, and his ahead-of-its-time style theories combined with his determination made him quickly climb to overseer rank

plex also sort of entered the inquest for dad-related reasons, with his dad having been (being?) an inquest scientist who has been missing for awhile. he hopes to eventually find out why, but... on top of that im gonna be honest plex is also just kind of a gullible nervous loser who falls too easily for men in positions of authority and is a stickler for Rules And Regulations and has been sucked into this huge pyramid scheme so. he was just plain assigned evil minion at birth.

Okay, so I have a smaaaall idea for a possible fanfic/fan comic/au, so I'm just gonna say it in the lamest of terms that I can, feel free to take this idea and make it yourself as long as you give some credit and also tag me in the posts. Pre Enter the Florpus btw.

Zim realizes just how big the impact that Professor Membrane has on planet earth, and he tries to use it to his advantage. He kidnaps him one night without anyone knowing (somehow) and quickly makes a clone of him, programming it to be almost completely identical to Professor Membrane himself, except the clone is now loyal to the Irken race, making it to where if Zim told him to go do something in the name of the Tallest or whatever, he'd do exactly that. Though Zim made one tiiiiny mistake. You see, Zim isn't aware of what Dib's or Gaz's home life with Professor Membrane is like, and since Professor Membrane himself was still unconscious as he made and was programming the clone, he couldn't have asked him about it. So what did Zim do as to try and not get Dib suspicious about his new plan? He tried to make his father's clone as close as possible to the original... Except Zim ended up making him loving. More compassionate. More emotionally supportive and available, like how most of the other parents on earth act towards their children. So imagine the surprise that Dib experienced when he was just rambling on about ghosts and para-science to his dad, thinking that he'd not care at all about it like always and maybe even lecture him about believing in it once again, only to hear the first words out of his mouth be, "Wow son, that's amazing! Say, where did you learn that from? I honestly wouldn't be surprised if you taught yourself that though, as my boy has always been a smart one!" Immediately, Dib and Gaz noticed these differences from him, though Gaz was the only one who had gotten suspicious about it, as Dib was just so happy that finally his dad was actually being there for them!

The rest of it is basically Gaz doing a Dib and practically going insane as she tries to figure out what happened to their dad, meanwhile Dib doesn't believe that anything happened at all, despite the already clear evidence that something did infact happen, all the while Zim is trying yet failing to get "Professor Membrane" to do his bidding, as the clone is now mostly on Dib's side when it comes to their beef. I'm calling this the Professor Memfake Au, do with it whatever you like (besides gross pro shipping shit, never do that with my creations).

u are correct about the age thing. it depends which source(s) u use. I think the show bible calls him a kid (but iirc it also says Dib's exact age and last name should never be given and yet we have both in Enter the Florpus), but if u go by lost/unmade eps, iirc the Trial shows that irkens are smeets until they are 10 and then they are adults (and they aren't human so saying "but in human years!" is ridic imo. we don't say "but it human years that would be..." except for our domestic animals, and even then not every person does THAT). if u take Word of God, Jhonen has said Zim is an adult so many times idk why ppl think he's STILL just having a laugh. he's said it's bc he thinks it's funny that a grown ass man would count a Literal Child as his nemesis, and cites the Dennis the Menace comic series. but if u take ONLY what is on screen then it's a mystery and up to interpretation. it's just sort of *shrug emoji*.

The show bible (made by JV btw) calls him a kid, yeah. There's one section of an old magazine talking about the series and describing Zim as a kid too.

Honestly there are a bunch of things that have been told about the IZ universe that doesn't even make sense now. Like yeah, Dib's last name and age, another example would be about the Tallest and the cut thumbs and how this was entirely forgotten/discarded for their new design for the movie.

I also agree with you about the possibility that human and irken age concept could be different from one to the other. We're talking about aliens anyway. Alien society with alien customs and alien ideals and alien culture and alien environment etc etc etc. Who knows? maybe planet Irk rotates/revolves faster that Earth's and by that it would mean that an irken year is way shorter than an earthling year. Nothing in the series can confirm that, yeah, but you cannot either deny that it's a possibility. Hell, even irkens can have another extremely different perspective about maturity

Like, the show itself is so ambiguous about these themes that I don't even understand why people are so stubborn to gatekeep one single concept as the entire truth, even if the show is a whole pile of nonsense that doesn't even try to take itself seriously.

"But JV said this" yeah.... and? not everyone support the "Word of God" thingy. If the final product doesn't give you a clear answer then you are on your right to have different interpretations. Not to mention that the creator is not the only one developing the concepts of a show. There's a whole team behind the show, and behind the team there are different perspectives.

I'll give you one example with another fandom: Cuphead! when fans were speculating about the age of the cupbros (and this was looong before the dlc and animated show's announcement) they asked Studio MDHR (the creators) if the bros were kids or adults. They replied saying that they were "kidults" (adults with childish tastes). But then, another person asked the same question to the writer of Cuphead, and he answered that they were teens! So, in this case, is one answer more valid than the other? I don't think so, 'cause both parts worked for the final product. This is one of the reasons why I don't truly take "Word of God" seriously.

Also, and this is just my opinion btw, even if Zim is a straight up adult, he can still be interpreted as a kid. Because well... he dresses up as a kid, he goes to school, he interacts with other kids, his nemesis is another kid, he has robo parents, he's small like a kid, he behaves like a kid, he sounds like a kid... (WITH ALL THIS ONLY REFERRING TO IZ'S UNIVERSE, I'M NOT SAYING THIS ALSO APPEALS THE REAL WORLD)

"Yeah, but visualizing Zim as a kid triggers me" that's valid, but have you ever thought that other people can also feel triggered by visualizing Zim as adult? Because well.. some people can feel uncomfortable with the thought of a straight up adult fighting a kid and pretending to be one, even if it's just comedy.

Can't we all.. stop gatekeeping and let everyone interpret fiction however the heck we want without pointing each other and talking shit to each other? I know it's too much to ask, but wouldn't be nice to respect the fact that no one will think the same way you do? (NOT SPECICALLY TO YOU ANON, ALL QUESTIONS ARE RETORIC, LOL).

It's just so absurd to me, we're talking about fiction. Why are we fighting for the age of a character that doesn't even exist? We're going coconuts.

It's more fun to create headcanons and aus, I prefer doing that instead of fighting nonsense.

i mean no disrespect to xeecee and liz shriekshack so i don't want this to come across like a big time own or anything, i'm sure they just spent less time watching invader zim than i did, which is fine (i guess). but in an older episode of the shrieking shack, back when they were still covering harry potter i think, they talk about having watched enter the florpus and they cite a particular joke as being an example of 00s "random humor" but they clearly didn't get the joke. so now i have to be That Guy and explain it.

the scene is — it's near the beginning of the film, when dib confronts zim outside his house. dib is talking about how he looked everywhere for zim and even went to that taco place he knows zim likes. zim responds that he does not in fact like the taco restaurant, gir does, and gir pipes up randomly to say "i ate a baby there once!" the reason i know they didn't get the joke, on shriekshack, is that they stop describing the scene there and we haven't gotten the joke yet. the joke is not that gir randomly claims to have eaten a baby; gir says random shit all the time, because he is malfunctioning (and the joke with gir is much more about him being broken and useless than it is about him saying random shit, btw), and usually when he does this zim reacts in confusion or anger or just doesn't acknowledge what he said at all.

the joke is that when gir says he ate a baby at the taco restaurant, zim's response is to nod and say "he did." zim has never reacted in this way to gir just saying random shit, which means this time it isn't random, gir legitimately ate a baby at the taco place. what would have otherwise come across as 00s-era Random xD™ humor is now a horrific murder confession. and nothing further is said about it, the conversation continues as if gir did not just casually confess to having eaten a baby at a restaurant. that's the joke.

invasion of the idiot dog brain!! gir is rly cute and funny in this ep, its what got me to rly start liking him

game slave 2!! gaz is one of my favs and shes great in this ep. plus i rly like all the Gamer Humor, u can tell it was written by someone who actually understands what video game fans r like ASDKJLDSK

bloaty's pizza hog!! another gaz-centric ep, shes so funny and badass in this. autism icon (i think abt "im trying to draw a LITTLE PIGGY" on a regular basis btw)

tak the hideous new girl!!! tak is one of my FAV characters i miss her SO MUUUCHHH this ep was such a great introduction to her shes so fucking cool

gir goes crazy and stuff!! can u tell i rly like gir episodes SKLJDSLKJ i think its rly interesting to see what hes capable of when hes NOT all glitchy and malfunctioning. if u think abt it the tallests saved zims life by giving him a faulty sir unit

least fav eps r probably dark harvest and rise of the zitboy just bc they gross me out LOLLL im not particularly sensitive to drawn/animated gore but dark harvest made me squeamish SKFLJLKFJ i still think they have funny moments in them but i cant watch them all the way thru

alright y’all listen... YES, for the majority of the movie, Zim is a bastard and basically goes feral and Dib has every reason to be deathly pissed at him, BUT, as a soft gay fandom old with a bleeding heart that has been scrounging for any scrap of friendship or family dynamics in the IZ universe since 2008, the movie had some of the sweetest, friendliest moments (in comparison to their usual interactions) I have EVER seen between Zim and Dib, and I just wanted to take a moment to appreciate them.

so HERE, is a highlight reel of Enter The Florpus: ZADF Edition

Small but substantial, Dib sounds genuinely hurt that Zim didn’t recognize him. Like genuinely hurt. “Y-y-- We know each other,” in the tiniest, most timid voice Dib has ever used. If he really had zero respect or regard for Zim he certainly would have brushed this off or just been agitated, but instead his tone suggests he’s disheartened that he’d be unimportant enough to Zim to be forgettable.

ZIM GIVES DIB ZERO PERSONAL SPACE WHEN THEY REUNITE. Even though Dib apparently smells bad enough to have flies buzzing around him and Zim has a notorious history of complaining about ‘smells,’ Zim goes out of his way get in Dib’s face over minuscule points, stand unnecessarily close to show him a video on his phone while playfully nudging him with his elbow, and even smoosh his cheek up against Dib’s while trying to intimidate him. He has never ever been SO touchy before. Maybe, subconsciously, he missed Dib, and this is his acceptable alternative to a greeting hug.

DIB SYMPATHIZING WITH ZIM AND OPENING UP TO HIM!!! When Zim explains his situation and breaks down as a result, Dib gets uncomfortable instead of laughing or taking advantage of him while he’s clearly such a mess, and even goes so far as to say that he feels the same way Zim does. Could he just be talking to himself? Sure, but the interaction reads so much like Dib is saying ‘hey man, don’t be sad, I understand how you feel.’ They’re familiar and comfortable enough to be openly sharing their feelings with each other, which for ‘enemies’ is incredibly meaningful.

DIB ACTUALLY RESPECTING ZIM WHEN CREATING HIS PLAN! He did NOT have to take the handcuffs off Zim OR give him ANY equal standing, Zim had given up!! But instead of hauling Zim’s ass off by the antennae he OFFERS A HANDSHAKE and gives Zim the dignity of asking him to agree to Dib’s deal. Zim may be apathetic, but Dib doesn’t force him against his will, which is more respect than Dib had ever treated him with in the past.

A GENUINE COMPLIMENT. DID Y’ALL READ THE POOP COLA COMIC? BEFORE NOW COMPLIMENTING ZIM WAS VISCERALLY REPULSIVE FOR DIB. NOT TO MENTION HE WAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BUT CRUEL AND BELLIGERENT TOWARDS ZIM IN THE SHOW. NOW HE LETS HIMSELF FREELY ADMIRE ZIM’S WORK AND GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE AND I HAD PERSONALLY ACCEPTED THAT IT NEVER WOULD. YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS??? GROWTH. RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENT. THEIR HISTORY TOGETHER ONLY GETS LONGER, AND THEY JUST GET MORE AND MORE FAMILIAR AS THE YEARS GO BY.

IN CONCLUSION, IF ZIM AND DIB’S GOALS WEREN’T DIRECTLY CONFLICTING, THEY’D BE ABLE TO SEE HOW MUCH THEY RELATE TO EACH OTHER AND BE GREAT FRIENDS. THE MOVIE GAVE US A GLIMPSE OF THAT, AND I’M EMOTIONAL ABOUT IT. THANK YOU FOR COMING TO MY TED TALK.
