the logic of a cataclysm

I stumbled across this amazing post by @infinitysgrace which points out something I've been itching to discuss for a while. The (in)consistency of Adrien's usage of the Cataclysm and the Lucky Charm.

In their post, they bring up the fact that Mr. Bug gets the object he wants, for the purpose he wants and Lady Noire is a bit salty about it because that's not the way she uses her power. Even more so, that's not something she was aware she could do at that point.

This ties perfectly to one thing that has always interrupted my suspension of disbelief in the Origins episodes. Those two episodes have aged like fine wine in the context of S4. With each new addition to S4, there's a new layer of foreshadowing or subtext we had not considered before in Origins.

All except for one part. This one:

See, the thing that has always bothered me about the way Chat uses his Cataclysm in Origins Pt. 2 is that it is inconsistent with the rest of the show. He creates a rusted beam. Granted, it's supposed to be "destroyed" from the beginning, since it's rusted and therefore useless, but he doesn't destroy anything.

@miraculouslycool and I were discussing this and we started to talk about how this actually might be foreshadowing in itself. We just hadn't noticed until season 4. Because as Rena puts it:

Conversely, since Chat's power is destruction, it stands to reason he can destroy his limits (or the ones someone else creates for him).

Chat is seen to use his Cataclysm is various ways throughout the show. In contrast with Ladybug, who summons the Lucky Charm and makes do with what she is given, Chat uses the Cataclysm to destroy, vaporize, rust, rot, break, cause malfunction, among other things, which suggests he has an unconscious understanding of the fact that he can use the Cataclysm to his will. This adds to the fact we've also seen him show either particular care and restraint when he uses it, or goes all out.

@miraculouslycool especially pointed out the fact that there are two instances where Chat summons the Cataclysm in especially odd ways: The Shanghai Special and Chat Blanc, in the fight against Hawkmoth. In Shanghai, the Cataclysm is already active on his hand before even summoning it vocally. In Chat Blanc, it is implied he may have used a first Cataclysm to destroy the roof to access Hawkmoth's layer before summoning a second one.

Then, there's also the fact that the Cataclysm we see on screen in Chat Blanc is actually exacerbated by learning the tragic truth about his family. This implies Chat's emotions do influence his command over the Cataclysm. What is more, it is a nice contrast with the fact that Marinette uses the Lucky Charm by coming up with what is, in her eyes, a logical plan (given that Chat always pokes fun at how complicated her plans are). It tells a lot about the characters and where they draw their power from, and you can write a whole other meta of that. So we're skipping it for now.

This is all to say, I'm yet again singing praise to the Origins episodes because every time I come back to them, I find a new little tidbit of foreshadowing. Chat's "inconsistent" Cataclysm in Origins Pt. 2 could very well be yet another layer of subtext on Adrien.

Considering what we know from S4, it implies he actually did get the hang of the Miraculous a little faster than Marinette, they just don't know it yet-- which also may tie to how eager he was to change his life and the emotional value he puts on being Chat Noir. It also gives hints of the pros and cons of having emotion and logic-driven wielders, and why it is important that the Cat and the Ladybug must be a pair of both. Most interestingly, if Chat ever were to hear Rena's findings about how to exploit their powers, it would give way for Ladybug and him to help each other expand on their wielding styles. Chat can show Ladybug how letting intuition guide you can be a good thing, while Ladybug can show Chat how to adapt to a situation when you're caught off-guard.
