I think the reason why this whole headcanons discourse bothers me so much is that is really is just fuelled by petty spite. Like all these characters are cisgender in canon. We make headcanons because it’s FUN to expand on characters in ways that reflect our different life experiences in whatever form that may take. Intentionally going after transmascs, especially young transmascs, for doing this with characters like they like and accusing them of all these different things genuinely does just feel like bigotry. Who cares if a head canon may not make the most amount of sense? It’s a cisgender fictional character we’re playing around with! Why does it have to be some grand act of activism to say blorbo number 3 is transmasc? We have much bigger fish to fry here.

After being outside for quite awhile.. again. I finally get to post this doodle, here!

This is supposed to (kinda) show New Ninja’s relationships/bonds with the few main characters!

I’m also gonna talk about them right here which is why I made this doodle in the first place! And this time, I had written it all down before this. And as you can see, Howard seems to have a slight different design, especially his hair… it actually has something to do with a part of the story! The clothes might be kinda changed tho later.

Anyway, here we go!

Randy:

you all already know this duo! The mentor and his student!!

Just when the kid thought there was no chance for them as the new chosen ninja of Norrisville, the old chosen ninja came right in out of nowhere and somehow things slowly started getting easier for them ever since. he is the reason why they still have hope now today.

To New Ninja, Randy is a good mentor, basically the best one ever! (No offence Nomicon-) and one of their best friends. he gives them the help they need with ninja stuff, supports them and sometimes even cheers them on during battles (while hiding himself so no one will know about two ninjas existing of course.) he sometimes also gives them praises for their hard work, making them very flustered and bashful but they still really appreciate it. The kid always feels safe around him, you could say they got attached to him and so has he with them.

if they have any trouble with something such as not understanding how a certain weapon really works and should be used in battle, big brother Cunningham is always there to teach them!

Yeah you heard me, i said ‘big brother’! Randy Is like a big brother figure to New Ninja, a sibling that the kid has never had but honestly wished they did. One who is so kind and patient with them…and also almost very overprotective over them. No seriously, he is. It mostly shows when, for example: The Nomicon makes the kid have to go do things that could be considered very dangerous or just anything he doesn’t agree with or an enemy he’s familiar with tries to kill them. (This may or may not kinda refer to Mcfist along with that one old comic i did-)

And of course, Randy likes and still keeps calling New Ninja nicknames such as ‘kid’ which is more common.

New Ninja before didn’t know about Randy’s true identity before but now they do after a certain incident (another old comic also showing that), which makes them also get to hang out outside of their ninja lives. However, the kid still calls him ‘ninja’ anyway.

Their bond is very strong and won’t be broken that easily, New Ninja and Randy care for and trust each other deeply and will continue on staying together as the super bruce team they are!…

…….until the day Randy has to mind wipe himself with the ‘ultimate lesson’ in the Nomicon once and for all finally comes…. at least they get to say some last words and goodbyes before that happens.

Howard:

both him and New Ninja barely knew each other at first. To the kid, Howard was just some random guy….that their mentor seemed to always talk to for some unknown reason.

They have seen the two guys together so many times that curiosity got the best of them and they started investigating, soon finally getting the answers they needed and getting to know the chubby guy more! Now in the present, they’re also friends! And after showing their true identity to him, they hang out sometimes too along with Randy.

To New Ninja, Howard is a pretty chill dude to talk to. Both him and Randy were the ones to first introduce them to Gregs game hole along with all the video games to exist, letting them join in all the fun they had been missing out on.

Howard is like the second big brother to the kid, the one who they might sometimes maybe get into crazy yet fun shenanigans with. There are literally times where they both got into some trouble and Randy had to go and help them, he was kinda mad about it but couldn’t stay like that at them for long. After all, they’re his friends who he adores very much.

Their friendship was normal at first but once one certain event with one familiar demon bird (along with a certain more then one tailed fox that was the cause for that said familiar demon birds return) happened which led to Howard being effected (such as his hair getting a…. ’bit more color’ then usual) by it quite a lot, New Ninja started getting extremely worried for him.

Now every time they get to meet again, New Ninja always first checks up on him and ask him if he’s feeling okay. Howard always says he’s fine and waves it off, trying to reassure the kid and calm them down.

But no matter how many times he says he’s okay, New Ninja can’t help but feel guilty for what happened to him…they think it’s their fault.

First Ninja:

Now this one’s…a little complicated. The kid currently barely talks to the old legend himself. Why? Cuz he’s kinda afraid of him of course!

To New Ninja, First Ninja is really intimidating. And by intimidating, I mean TERRYFYING. The kid feels so small and pathetic compared to him, thinking that they ALWAYS have to be respectful and obedient around him without a single screw up. He’s the FIRST ninja of Norrisville to exist after all, the last thing they want to do is piss him off in any way, especially after seeing that dragon fire punch of his for the first time during their .

Because of their fear, New Ninja can barely say anything in First Ninjas presence. Meeting Randy for the first time when they just knew him as the ninja was okay, they got used to him pretty quickly…but THE First Ninja!? Oh hell nah-

Now First Ninja on the other hand, doesn’t really hate New Ninja or anything. In fact, he actually wouldn’t mind getting to know them better just like he did with Randy. He doesn’t understand why the kid seems to not talk to him so much, did he do something wrong?

Don’t worry tho, this doesn’t last long. New Ninja will soon slowly warm up to First Ninja later on and they can finally talk to each other more properly, maybe even have the man be a father figure of some kind. But for now, it’ll take a lot of work.

Plop plop:

Their relationship is a little bit similar to the one with First Ninjas but opposite and better.

New Ninja wasn’t intimidated by Plop Plop like they were with First Ninja but they still were too anxious to talk to him, he noticed this but it didn’t stop him from trying to talk to them. Though he didn’t try to get all over their personal space, he instead just went easy on them by giving them a chance to speak only if they wanted to and stayed patient with them for as long as he needed to.

Before he knew it, the kid soon finally started replying to him one day and once he heard their voice, he was very thrilled!

To New Ninja, Plop Plop honestly seems like a nice and gentle man. He can even be humorous at times, he was able to get a little giggle out of the kid a few times. He showed the kid that they have nothing to be scared of, that with him, they can tell him anything. And to his delight, they do just that!….well maybe not like EVERY single thing but hey, he got their trust!

Even if Plop Plop may not still currently know much about the stuff in the Morden times/ future yet, he still willingly listens to New Ninja’s ramblings whenever he has the time. He’s just glad to see the kid feel safe around him, it makes him smile.

He is aware of how nervous they are around First Ninja, feeling kinda a little bad for the poor old ninja cuz of it. Right now, he also kinda tries to get the kid to get more used to his ninja friend, yet it ain’t so easy..

... so I'm pretty sure this is likely going to fall on deaf ears, but this crossed my dash, and I have to add some thoughts. So on one hand I agree with you, Aredhel has so little representation in this fandom apart from romanticizing her clearly abusive relationship compared to Galadriel who is pretty much everywhere; aaand there's a lot of uncanon gender roles pushed not just on elven society, but Arda as a whole.

However, there are no "obviously gay characters" in Tolkien, there's a lot of friendships which are so lacking in fandom consumption of media. And the fandom has characterized a lot of characters who are gay, including ones who are not gay, regularly. Samwise Gamgee, not gay, marries Rosie Cotton, canonically loves her to bits-- on AO3 2,500 fics are of him and Sam. Him and Rosie? 338. A character that's canonically straight. How about Aragorn, again, another canonically straight character... on AO3 his main ship is Legolas with well over 2,000, while his canonical ship with Arwen has 1,380. A little more balanced. How about Thranduil, y'know the guy who had a wife and was still so devastated about her death centuries later that he couldn't even talk about her to his son? Naturally we'll have to come up with OCs for that, right? Okay. According to AO3, thranduil/his wife tag has 485 and thranduil/ original female character has 588, together that's 1,073. However, thranduil/bard is 1,375, thranduil/ thorin is 648, thranduil/elrond is 336. All told that's 2,359. Canonically straight. But then again fandom has painted him as a pretty boy who likes to drink wine, be sassy, and be very flamboyantly gay.

In other words... the fandom has collectively made all these characters gay when they weren't. And I'm not talking Bisexual, there's so much bi-erasure it's kinda ridiculous. But I digress.

Now, Maedhros and Fingon. After reading this post I did a little breakdown on AO3, to see if you're right about women creating ocs. So i found there's 85 maedhros/ofc. There are 20 fingon/ofc and 39 of fingon/fingons wife (I'll touch on that in a second). There's even 7 brave souls who do fingon/maedhros/ofc. All told that is 144. Fingon/Maedhros however? 2,754. In other words, not even close. The fandom seems unanimous, the tag is full of it, and it's actually pretty hard to even find either of them in a heterosexual ship. Especially given there isn't actually any canonical base for it. You can reference Tolkien aaand WH Auden all day, but that doesn't change that at a core level he didn't write it. It isn't there. And yes, Christopher Tolkien has stated he mistakenly made Gil-Galad to be Fingons son instead of Orodreths when he published Silmarillion, but he still got that from an original idea. In fact there's actually more children in the old ideas, meaning that Tolkien had a wife in mind for Fingon. Now he changed it it would seem, but that doesn't negate that with that baseline... that kinda points to Fingon being straight.

I believe you mentioned "uncanon gender roles... for no reason". Define for me the difference? Russingon is, in the end, fanfiction. They are friends in canon. They're ride or die friends. And what's wrong with that? What's wrong with loving a friend so much you'll walk literally into hell for them? Now you could say "what about Beleg and Turin?" To which I would have to concede. Turin kissed him on the mouth. Plain and simple.

"But it's implied" ... implication isn't canon. You can build headcanons off implication, but at the end it's still not canon. For instance, earlier I said Aredhel/Eöl is clearly abusive. However, there's lots of people who see it as full of possibilities and half her numbers on AO3 are with Eöl. Now I may not agree with a loving relationship, but it's not un-canon, it's just interpretation. On that same note, ship what you want, it's not illegal. Whatever floats your boat.

However, calling anyone who doesn't agree with you homophobic because when they read the Silmarillion they saw a deep and beautiful friendship, and wish to ship either Maedhros,Fingon, Glorfindel, Ecthelion, Etc,etc,etc.... with women... that's pretty messed up. It would be like if I took Achilles and shipped him exclusively with Briseis, got everyone to agree and then called those who shipped him with Patroclus or other men, names. As a matter of fact, isn't that what most of the academic community has done for ages? What's the difference? You're saying any woman who writes a fiction with these characters in a ship with a woman they're in the wrong because of the "obviously gay characters".

Additionally the female characters in this fandom don't get the same treatment. Somehow they're all straight, they're all there for only their ships, no one ever crossovers the men around them. Oh sure there's Aredhel/ Celegorm, but fyi that's it for her apart from Eöl. Women are treated as wingmen for all the gays, which I don't have an issue with overall, but it's everywhere. Aredhel I know mostly because she's my favourite character, Aredhel who out of the 1,541 works on AO3, 315 of those are her playing wingman or being otherwise in the background for Fingon and Maedhros. Out of the leftover 1,226 Celegorm is her main ship with 295. 172 are her and Eöl. Also, you know how Fingon and Maedhros have 2,754 fics? Comparably we should have as much f/f fic for the other two cousins, Aredhel/ Galadriel---21. Okay okay maybe not Galadriel, maybe Elenwë? 13. This is from a character who a lot of people see as bisexual.

Okay but she's not as popular. What about Galadriel? ....Halbrand/Sauron+Galadriel is 2,130. Celeborn follows with 633. She has a total count of f/f : 348.

Wait what was Maedhros' count on m/m? 3,036.

... in other words this fandom has zero balance. M/M ships are the top ones in spite of them having zero canonical support (Turin/beleg & morgoth/sauron excluded) actually hold on lemme get the silmarillion numbers.

Out of 31,498 fanfics on AO3 of only the Silmarillion. 10,718 are M/M. 5,919 are M/F. 1,289 are F/F.

ramblings on Li Ming (and Heart) and homosexuality

moonlight chicken has so many things to offer in terms of technical beauty and interesting themes but what i cannot stop thinking about is the different ways they approach homosexuality in the story.

we have Wen who has a rainbow flag on his desk and pictures of him and Alan on the wall. Wen, who openly flirts with Jim and has no qualms talking openly about his one night stand. Wen, whose step father knows about his sexuality and is close enough with him to discuss his love life.

Kaipa we don’t know too much about. But his mom knows and is supportive and some of the vendors and the chicken family seem to know. But if anyone was questioning in what reality this show is set with all the class discussion and corona featuring, his part of the story shows that homophobia exists and he is worried about how he fits in with his own family, the expectations of his mother and possible the awareness that he makes the family he has “different”.

Jim is arguably even more visibly gay than Wen in terms of what we see throughout the show. He opened the shop with his ex, they prayed at the temple together and even though he objected due to proprities sake eventually they loudly declared their love to each other and the whole neighbourhood knows. Wen somehow feels like he is living in the remnants of a bubble: his circle of friends seems very queer, his closest friend and the whole gym seem to be all part of that as well. This only might change now with him questioning his work and breaking up with Alan: some gatherings he won’t attend anymore apparently.

And finally, we have Li Ming. At school he doesn’t seem to open up to his classmates on most things and additionally is in the closet. While there wasn’t anything alluding to homophobic rethoric being spread at school we can see how the heteronormativity gets to him and feel that there must be good reason as to why no one knows. And it could just be how Li Ming is judging the situation based on vibes, we don’t know. His mother is or at least was homophobic but at the same time he is raised by his gay uncle who is surrounded by other gay people. And I love how it feels like this might have given him enough security to be comfortable with his own sexuality but how it also isn’t enough to shield him from the world at large.

With so many great shows coming out of Thailand and most of them getting more and more political it just feels so real and 2023 to me that Li Ming is part of a generation that knows who they are but still have to battle with the shadow that homophobia has cast way before they were born.

i think ppl can and should project onto fictional characters. that's kind of what they're for a lot of the time. even if in the story they dont have the exact same experiences the audience can still find similarities with them and it's empowering to headcanon that, because of these similarities, the character has a similar identity to you. a lot of writers purposely give their characters experiences similar to marginalized groups to make those groups feel seen.

that being said, if you project your own experiences onto your blorbos you HAVE to be able to tell when the story is purposely making the character a metaphor for your experiences and when the story is. not doing that. just because you personally relate to a character doesn't mean the character literally is your marginalized identity. and it definitely doesn't mean that the writers hate your marginalized identity, specifically, if they don't do what you want them to do with that character.

Persona romance routes are all pretty bad but damn they really hit rock bottom with p3p femc route like the misogyny is very blatant and it’s almost hilarious like look at the Shinjiro romance. When you do his social link he’s like very clearly respectful of Kotone as a leader and explicitly says stuff like "oh yeah you’re clearly the best fighter we have, I don’t really know much about fighting like you do, I hope I’m not dragging you down, you’re doing a good job as leader just remember to take care of yourself, everyone looks up to you I know you can rely on them" etc. like he has faith in her leading abilities. But then when you romance him he’s like got dialogue like "bwah bluh i gotta look after you because you’re a GIRL and you need to stick by me, a big strong MAN so you don’t get hurt" and "don’t wear that revealing outfit in front of other guys 👺" and it’s like. Does he respect her or not and also like it doesn’t make sense for him to look down on her for being a girl cuz he literally has never not been led by a girl leader during his time in sees and Mitsuru in particular really has her shit together when it comes to being responsible and a good fighter and she’s always known the most about Tartarus

It’s also like. Idk maybe its just me I’m not a girl so FUCK IF I KNOW but to me the appeal of romancing Shinji is the fact that he’s sweet and sensitive and gentle and has respect for you despite the fact that he acts all scary. That’s like, what made me like this character in the first place. But the writers seem to think what women want is for a BIG STRONG MAN to protect them because they are just DELICATE WOMEN who are inferior in every way it’s like. Shut upppp thanks
