I finally gotten to it, I am finally going to start learning a language (Spanish)

Wait, why should I care?

You don't need to care at all. I just want to keep a public record of my progress and see if I can pull off the effort for long enough to achieve my goals.

If you're not interested, there's no shame in scrolling past this post once a month. And dw, these posts will be at most monthly. So if you're here for something else, this won't clog things up.

If you're concerned about the physics, reminder this is my personal account, and there's another one exclusively for those who just want the science without the shitposting/personal/political stuff.

Though if you're like a linguist or something - or are interested in language stuff in general, I'm sure you can find some value in this post perhaps.

What language will it be?

tl;dr Spanish

Also I love putting all this colour in my post. It satisfies my autism so much.

Now, I've come from a very multilingual background. I learned mandarin between age 5 - 13, and latin in grades 7 thru 8.

Mandarin was a language I could never get the hang of.

It probably had to do with some child-like racism combined with a lack of motivation.

Buuuuut it most likely was a consequence of when I moved from Hong Kong to Australia, my new school did not accomodate the fact I was already experienced.

Nevertheless, I feel as if my Mandarin skills have been overshot, and I don't think I'd be motivated to re-learn it unless I overwhelmingly succeed in this.

Latin was just a dud - I decided to do it because I thought it would be interesting, but dropped it after I realised I had too much on my plate heading into 9th grade.

But Spanish on the other hand, well, there are three better reasons why I choose to learn it:

I never really got an opportunity. I stopped wanting to learn from my abuela when I was 3-5 yo, and my Australian high school also didn't offer it either (my high school's curriculum was dogshit)

A big portion of my relatives are tied to Argentina, with my mum being born from Argentine immigrants. She spent her high school years doing ESL as Spanish was her second language

Aspiring to do Astrophysics is likely going to land me in Chile, as the Andes is home to telescopes-a-plenty

I could've also gone with other languages I'm interested in, like:

German (because my abuela was born from German immigrants - no they were not Nazis, they actually fled in 1936 to avoid conscription)

Croatian (my abuelo was born in Yugoslavia and fled in the 1950s)

Greek (I don't know why it was my "latin is cool" phase, so I guess I wanted to do ancient greek but I don't know how much drift there has been over the last 2000 years thanks to the romans)

And thus I go with Spanish.

But what about regional dialects?

I am very aware that there are various dialects of Spanish within Latin America, and generally, most online methods of learning will teach you Spanish Spanish.

But I think it's more important to first learn a bit of basic vocab, and the grammar, before worrying about my regional dialect. I'm still pretty sure that the most common and important grammar conventions are still shared between languages.

And I already know that people will tell I'm a foreigner, because I'll have an "English"-like accent to it. Learning a specific dialect will only make it harder to tell, not eliminate being "language clocked" entirely.

So what's this going to look like?

Every month or two I'm going to personally report, to myself, via tumblr, my progress in learning. I'll list what I learned, what I still need to work on, and what I wish I could do next.

Effectively this is going to be a public journal of sorts, to make sure I feel like I'm doing this productively.

What's the weather like now?

Given that I've already attempted to learn Spanish twice previously, and being exposed to cultural influences, I already know a bit of Spanish.

Most of it is just random bits of vocabulary, that sound a lot less impressive if you were to try and make me say a sentence:

Custom greetings "Hola", "Buenos Noches"

Expletives "¡Ay caramba!"

The basic conjunction "y"

"Niño, niña, hombre"

Agua (with the "con gas" or "sin gas" tacked on too)

Counting from "uno" to "treinta-nueve"

Some month names like "Mayo" or "Diciembre"

Some colours like "Rojo"

Some utensils and tools like "Boligrafo"

Other stuff that I won't be able to recaly suddenly

And I mostly only understand the pronunciation, most of the spellings I had to look up on google translate. Extra I's like in December or thirty, or that there's no "ph" in pen.

There are other simple grammatical rules that I know of:

Gender i.e. words that end with a you tack on a "La" and for o's you tack on "El". More generally you have to pay attention to grammatical gender

As an educated guess from knowing a bit of Latin, I'm sure there are noun and verb declensions that interact with gender as well

Word order, much like English, is SVO

Clearly, I have my work cut out for me. But I also have a head start over a lot of people primarily because I have experience in other languages related to Spanish, which can help inform me on grammar and common vocabulary. I also have some (minor) knowledge in linguistics.

Another one is that I don't just assume that Spanish is a 1:1 translation of English, where you can just swap words for others. This seems like a trivial fact. But you'd be surprised at how much "English-speaking privilege" can blind people who don't require learning second languages.

It can be much more effective to learn a language when you know your expectations.

What are my Goals?

Well, in the spirit of a SMART goal, I don't really know. Because I don't actually know how long it will take me to get to a desired level of fluency.

Sometimes a language can take years to learn, sometimes it can be picked up in just one. And there are so many different "levels" of acheivement.

Which is why my goals in the long term will be more vapid:

At some point, I want to have a semi-fluent conversation with my abuela in Spanish

I want to be able to speak and understand a proper, unbroken sentence within a few months or a year

Now, what I mean by "Sentence" is really finicky. I don't mean "Las mujers leen; ¡Soy una de las mujers!" (see I'm already learning ha ha). I mean a sentence you'd normally say like:

"Hey X, I'm gonna go to the store, what do you need me to buy? Ok see you in half an hour."

That will be a bit difficult. It requires a lot more vocab to get to that level. But of course, I know it's do-able because millions of people have done it already!

What are my short-term goals? And how will I learn?

For the short term, my goals are a little more simpler. Primarily because there will always be a course or an app that will help me learn.

And for the first few months, my goals are most likely going to align with whatever the app has designed for me to do.

The problem is that I feel like most apps will act as if they can take you from no-knowledge to fluent speaker in like 5 months tops, which for an adult sounds a little fishy if you ask me.

When reading through the recommended applications, I came across two that were appealing:

Duolingo, which is more fast-paced and short-form. It gamifies language but may not be great for formal education

Rosetta Stone, which is advertised as better for natural language learning. And requires more effort.

I decided to use both, mainly because I'm lucky enough to afford it ... for now. I don't have much other means to spend my money regardless.

The reason I choose to use both is simply because I want the best of both worlds, and that I can't tell which one is better until I try it. Duolingo makes it entertaining, Rosetta Stone makes it serious. Sort of the balance I'm looking for.

At some point I hope to stop using at least one or the other. But for now I have nothing better to do.

Anyways, that's all I gotta say on the matter for now. Wish me luck!

never thought i’d ever make this post, but here we are. this is just an update since i haven’t been very active here (this blog specifically)

i’ve realized that i haven’t been writing anything for the course of 5+ months because i’m more focused on school, trying to adjust to young adulthood, and thinking about what other careers/hobbies i want to pursue in so it kinda drew me away from sitting down to write something. along with burnout, so that’s… yeah. sorry all.

the thing is i was really trying to get back into writing something but that’ll be once in a blue moon most likely. perhaps something not fandom related or something, but who knows? other than that i just wanted to say this for those who did follow me solely for my fics and such, so you’re free to unfollow if you fall along those lines.

as of late i haven’t been feeling like writing at all, and yet writing is the reason why i’m here via tumblr. but i’m probably going to be ia for the time being until i feel like writing again. (if that ever happens) though i’ll probably be lurking most of the time, so if you see me interact with your post or pop in your inbox then hello :3!! also mutuals if you want to get in contact with me in some way outside of tumblr you can ask for my disc or game users (via genshin, pjsk, hsr, roblox)

so what’s the takeaway? i think i need to step down from social media and not feel forced to post fics or anything. maybe that writing motivation i’ve been longing for will come back naturally, even if it takes a few months or even years. so i wouldn’t really say i’m “quitting” it’s more like a “half-vacation.” if you get what i mean. even when i say this, it’s most likely that i’m going to upload a shitpost or anything along those lines on my spam/main depending on how i feel at the moment, just saying.

if i were to really leave writing behind me, and for you guys to say that you get inspiration from me or you just enjoy my works, then thank you for giving me a chance to try to warm your hearts in the form of writing, as cheesy as that may sound. i’ve enjoyed doing it a lot! i really do. but now i need to slowly transition into adulthood and actually have that “adult” mindset. (s i g h)

First of all: Hermitcraft is essentially a series where a bunch of super talented and pretty longstanding mcyt-ers play on a single minecraft server for a period of a "season" and build absolutely fucking insane bases and vibe together. It's all very structured and organized so on every member's channel u'll find playlists for each season.

(oh and by longstanding mcyt-ers I mean literal pioneers in the mcyt community, people who have redstone inventions named after them bc they've been around longer than the redstone itself--etc)

The server is super chill!!! Everyone is very nice and they all get along super well and coordinate things on a discord server so that everyone's got all the info and they also prioritize building over basically everything--which means like, fire tic is off (meaning fire cannot spread), you do not steal anythign unless you will pay it back at least like twice over (once Grian accidentally killed ppl so he grinded them out full enchanted netherite armor/tools + some blocks and this is literally just like, what everyone does)

But!!!! besides all that!!!! where do you start *watching*!!!!

There are something like,,, 30 members on teh HC server??? more??? I cannot remember. Every one of them posts Hermitcraft episodes to their youtube channels, but there's also a HC recap youtube channel dedicated to weekly recaps of all hermit activity which you can find here!!

The thing about HC is that everytime there's a new update to MC, or even just the server starts to get stale--they throw out the world and start a new, completely empty one from scratch and thus is a new "season." Currently we're only a few episodes into the 8th season!

I watch a very limited scope of HC but--here are my limited reccomendations

GRIANNNNNNNN: because of course, we love grian, we stan grian, he has cats--what more could you ask for? Yes you've seen him gracing your screen in MCC and killing it, and you've also most likely seen him in fanart comparing him to Philza bc both are badass MC players with ✨wings✨he's chaotic and super creative and very kind! he also builds lots of mega builds and they are *incredible.* You're gonna wanna watch him if you want some good, lighthearted gremlin content.

Goodtimeswithscar: my BELOVED!!! This man is like, chaos but make it absolutely harmless. He is Dr. Doofenshmurtz levels of unfunctioning in the best ways possible. Mans tries so hard to be a villain and he just akjsd;lfja;sldfkj cannot pull it off and I adore him so much for it. Also he's got a new vibe every season--last season he was a wizard who lived in a giant snail before moving into a massive mining-construciton-thing??? And this season he has very much Howl's Moving Castle vibes. He also streams on twitch!!! Which I would totally recommend bc he's very chill and fun to listen to. You're gonna wanna watch him if you want a little bit more spice to your episodes--what is that spice exactly? Just watch and you'll see >:))

Pearlescentmoon: she's a new member to the HC server this season and I love her!!! I've only seen her a bit in Grian and Scar's vids but she took down an entire build just to rotate it like 90 degrees we stan an icon.

Thinking about the way Martha snaps at the Doctor in the sound of drums. Like yes her family is in danger and she's not only got experience with how to act in high risk moments from her training as a med student but also now from traveling with the Doctor but also this entire series she's been fairly on her own. The Doctor has not been himself has and been unable to help to his usual capacity and Martha has been there picking up the slack and filling in as the Doctor.

She gets kidnapped on her second trip and has to save herself. She gets left on her own in old New York and has to figure out both what the Doctor wants and how to deal with the pigmen with little to no help. Then she's facing off against Lazarus and then she's got to save the Doctor from a sentient sun and stop the ship they're on from crashing into said sun. Of course she then gets abandoned in 1913 for several months with not only a useless human Doctor but also early twentieth century racism to deal with. Only to immediately after get stuck in 1969 where she's apparently the only one working??

And then she gets this shit. The last time she saw her family, her mum warned her not to go with the Doctor because he was dangerous and now her family is in danger. 'I'll do what I like' not only is she putting the Doctor rightfully in his place she's doing what she's been doing the entire time she's been with the Doctor. She's been being the Doctor for the entire series while the Doctor has been wallowing. He didn't care about leaving her to take charge when it meant saving her life from the macra or from him when he was possessed. He actively encouraged her to kill the pigmen and then tried to send her away when he was dealing with the Daleks. The Doctor turned Martha into him but then expected her to act like a companion when it was convenient to him 'I'll do what I like' as she should, as the Doctor would, as he does later when he tries to save the master despite what he's done and the risks he'll be taking if he saves him.

It's culmination of all the frustration she's felt all series as well as indicating the near completion of her becoming the Doctor. I don't think it's surprising that the Doctor's a little shorter with her after that, the Doctor doesn't get along with himself in any form just as we see him be much shorter with Jack who has become a mirror of the Doctor. He's relying on them being able to understand him as they embody him but they're all just slightly out of step with each other, each held back by something different that prevents them from meeting in the middle to do what they know needs doing that they would do if they were anywhere else. But Martha's worried about her family and Jack's worried about his team and the Doctor's worried about the Master. They're all quintessentially the Doctor here but they can't fully agree with the Doctor due to their different reservations and it causes friction that the Doctor doesn't deal with effectively.

I don't know I just love that moment and I love the way Jack looks at the Doctor after she snaps both surprised that she's spoken to him like that and the Doctor's not responding to it but also with a side of 'You deserved that. Glad someone said it' and the way he watches them throughout their interactions trying to understand their dynamic as well as this unfamiliar Doctor

My #1 post of 2022

I don't think we give Martha enough credit for how gentle her exit was, for lack of a better word. She's just gone through arguably the most traumatic year of her life with no clue as to how Leo and his family are fairing nor how the rest of her family are coping in captivity. She's got to traverse an apocalyptic landscape without getting caught or killed, though she almost comes close, all while spreading a message for the Doctor. The Doctor who at this moment is doing very little in regards to actual legwork. And is arguably at fault for everything that's transpired.

And yet there's no blame in her farewell speech. She makes it clear that how he treated her wasn't acceptable, while also stating that it's not really about him its about her family and it's about her. She even makes sure that she has a means of contacting him again because she knows really he shouldn't be on his own but she also can't be the person that stays anymore. It's incredibly graceful and honestly more than he deserves but really just goes to show how compassionate she is

this shitpost style probably won't even cover like half of the kirby lore but here's what my tired tired brain can pull together on like 2 hours of sleep.

One day Void (god) was so happy it made a kirby, and then also one day god was so angry it made Zero. Zero made Dark matter which made Gooey who is kirby's friend dw about it. Zero died and came back as Zero 2 at some point.

Dedede gets his ass kicked on the daily and is friends with kirby mostly after the first game but this poor fat penguin keeps being possessed and then you have to beat him up every time. If I had a nickel for every time dedede is possessed in a game I'd have like 5 nickels.

Then there's the ancients and void termina and then Galacta knight who defeated void termina and then half the ancients being banished to the edge of the galaxy because Galacta Knight was too powerful so they put him in a crystal and then there's worship of void termina and honestly that is an entire mess in and of itself that I do not even want to describe in this shitpost style Void Termina is a hell beast. help. sometimes galacta knight breaks out of his crystal hell prison and fights meta knight for fun or something. Oh right Meta Knight original was kirby's rival because he wanted to beat up planet popstar for being like. lazy. or something.

There's a lot going on in here for the love of god what the fuck.

There is a big bee lady in kirby named Sectonia who wanted to become a goddess but it's like Kirby's job to destroy gods so she like. died. She was pretty cool though.

There is so much i'm like leaving out and this is as poorly as i can describe things on purpose.There’s all the individual game stuff too like Daroach and Magolor and Marx but im not getting into that.

I Do Like Bees in real life though.

Bit of a shitpost but a while back I had a Digimon themed dream and I kind of wanted to share it

Content Warning, there was a somewhat messed up looking Digimon in the dream which I tried to quickly recreate, so uh, mild body horror warning???

So I can’t actually remember what the dream was about, like what the story was. It was Adventure related, I can’t remember if I was one of the Chosen or if I was just With The Chosen, but I was with the kids in the DW.

There was also some femme Digimon that kind of looked like Shiva from World of Final Fantasy. The kids were convinced she was a villian of some kind while she was actively denying it, like the kids had the wrong person. The kids were trying to get Not-Shiva to confess she was evil and fight her while she kept on denying it and fleeing, the kids giving chase.

Somehow the kids got separated from their partner Digimon, and a hoard of actually villanous Digimon started chasing the kids, so we had to hide. We entered this underground bunker built into a cliff overlooking the ocean, the bunker having some windows (like, holes in the walls, no glass or bars or anything) you could see the ocean from.

So we hid in there, hoping the Digimon giving us chase would loose their track but sadly they found the bunker and came in looking for us

And like. On their own, the Digimon don’t look fucked up, they’re not scary or anything, mildly funny if anything. But like, as I was watching the dream unfold, like. In the dream, these Digimon looked so fucked up to me their visual appearance got just ingrained into my brain, like I remember (almost) EXACTLY how the fuck they looked because they creeped me the fuck out

And how did they look?

You legit just took Agumon’s body*, removed all the facial features entirely, and then slapped a Petit Meramon-esque face at the end what would be Agumon’s snout

*only thing I can’t remember is whether or not these Digimon had the Agumon dino-hands or if they had like humanoid hands. Like they could’ve had humanoid hands, I can’t remember, I was too focused on their fucking faces

Like it looks goofy now but I swear to god, when I was in the dream hiding for my life from a hoard of these fucking things, like. That was scary, that was creepy as hell

IDK what the fuck these things were called, all I do know that they were classified as Viruses and their attack was spouting a beam of fire from their mouths. Which is exactly what they did when they found us in the bunker. One of them just started attacking me in the face with a beam of fire. It was not a good time.

I can’t remember what I happened after these things found us, the last thing I remember is Not-Shiva, on top of an ominous clocktower, deciding that she had no way to convince the kids she was innocent (which she was, genuinely), leaving her with no other option but to be the villian they demanded her be- she wasn’t going to kill the kids or anything, just fight them to make them leave her alone. As an Ultimate, she could do that (I guess)

And so she gave her best Evil Villian Monologue to the kids to make herself sound like a baddie and jumping into battle

Yeah it wasn’t a great dream, I can’t remember anywhere near enough to even make it sound interesting. I’m just here because that Not-Agumon creeped me out and I wanted to share it because, I mean fucking look at it, it’s gross as hell
