Since you just talked about the Tetro secrets maybe you can tackle the Despair Time secrets in the same way. (I think those are the only two casts that revealed every student's secret, but I could be wrong.)

You are right that Despair Time is the only other Danganronpa title which has revealed everyone's secrets aside from Tetro Pink, as Trigger Happy Havoc never revealed what the other students got. I have some good ideas on what some of the other secrets could be based on stuff we find out later in the game and things we learn from future Danganronpa material, but others are still very much an enigma.

This gets looonnnng so under the cut.

Levi is a Murderer and he holds no remorse

Levi admits he killed someone but the reason he didn't bring it up eariler was because he didn't know who it was referring to as it could be when he killed his father or when he killed two guys looking to start trouble with him. He also talks this in a detached way like he was talking about the weather.

As such many have been quick to label Levi as a sociopath and a realistic portrayal as that since contray to most media depections, Levi isn't a raging lunatic who enjoys killing others, he's someone who wants to be a good person and get along with the others, but because he lacks the innate understanding what a good person is, he struggles with connecting to others. He has no attachments and openly admits he never cared for Ace, which seemed to hurt the jockey greatly. This is more inline with real life sociopaths, people trying to get by and be productive members of society, but they struggle because they don't possess empathy or moral understanding, or rather its not instinctive to them so they have to learn it via observation.

However I do believe Levi does have some degree of empathy, he just cannot see it as such as he did save Teruko from the gatling gun, so while I think he still has a lot to learn, I don't see Levi as a bad person. As always context is key and learning how detached Levi is makes him more interesting as a person.

Whit's mother is dead and he always omits the truth

Whit doesn't really talk about his personal life all that much so we don't have much to go off, something I'm sure either future FTEs or Chapter 3 could help to provide, but its clear he's very attached to his mother and might be in denial that she is dead.

I also have a good idea how Whit's mother died because during the Chapter 2 Class Trial Whit seems to have a suspiciously good amount of knowledge on hanging. While I'm all for other people then the usual trial point-getters contributing to the Class Trials, the fact Whit knows so much how hanging works, makes me believe his mother unsubscribed from life and she decided to hang herself while doing so. If Whit got home one day and saw his beloved mother hanging there, it might have caused some psychological effects and maybe he pretends she isn't dead because its easier for him to cope that way.

Again since we don't know what Whit's mother was going through, we kinda need context on this matter but it feels like something that as the Charles and Whit friendship develops, could be touched upon.

David exists to manipulate others. To him, everyone else exists to be taken advantage of

And this is what made David the rival character as soon as his mask slipped and the true insanity behind him was revealed. Now I am still curious how they are gonna take his character in Chapter 3 given how he basically nuked his social status among the cast during Chapter 2's class trial, so him having to live with the consequences of that could be interesting.

I am curious what led him to believe this is how the world works, as people don't just wake up one day and decide to become manipulators. Or even if his sister is real. Sadly I doubt we will find the answers to that soon.

Charles's older brother died, but he doesn't remember him at all

When J revealed this secret to Charles, he was of course confused for obvious reasons as the fact he even had a older brother in the first place? This let him to believe he suffered from childhood amnesia, the idea that whatever happened to his older brother was so traumatic that his mind blocked out the memory for his own sake.

This could also tie into why he has such a fear of blood, as maybe he personally witnessed the death of his older brother, and that's what caused this fear of blood? Phobias after all, are often learnt behaviours from past experiences so if a young Charles saw the blood soaken corpse of his older brother, especially if they were quite close, it could be why his fear of blood is so strong. But this isn't something we will find out anytime soon.

Ace's body is falling apart, yet he refuses to eat.

As Veronika pointed out, jockeys often suffer from eating disorders due to their strict diets as their jobs often have a very strict weight requirement. Now its very hard to pin down what eating disorder Ace has, as there isn't enough evidence to pinpoint what eating disorder he has.

I do find it interesting Ace has a eating disorder when he is so scared of dying since starvation is one of the worst ways to go out. It does explain his aggressive behaviour as people with eating disorders are often very irritable and start fights with others so they can avoid eating. One sinister side effect is that your blood doesn't clot probably if you don't have enough nurients and Ace had a massive injury on him thanks to Nico...

Had Ace not killed Arei, I think he would have died naturally over the course of the next few days from that alone.

Arturo's younger sister killed herself because of him, and he should have never left her

Once again, context is everything and we don't know why Arturo decided to leave his sister. We know its a painful memory for him because when Eden reveals she has the secret, Arturo flips out and threatens her with death if she blabs about it to anyone. The only reason this threat didn't go through was because Arei heard the whole thing and stopped him.

Something tells me that maybe Arturo does feel some guilt over what happened with his little sister and he doesn't want to admit it. Again I can only speculate why he did what he did unless he fesses up the story himself. Given how loathed Arturo is both among the cast and the fans, it might serve as a way to redeem this scumbag doctor in the eyes of everyone.

Ever since Eden kissed a girl, she was afraid her sexuality would ruin her friendships

First thing's first, Eden is a lesbian, based.

Secondly I am curious why she's so much in the closet over it, my best guess is assuming Despair Time's America is the same as the present day one in terms of values, Eden lived in a conservative community where such actions would make her a social pariah. Or she has some very bigoted parents. Given how clockmaking is often seen as a deeply traditional skill, it makes me speculate that Eden might have a very traditional family growing up, one that wouldn't tolerate their daughter coming out as a lesbian.

And if she lived in a conservative community, she would worry if her friends think less of her if they know she's into girls. My advice? If they refuse to accept who you are, they don't deserve to be your friends and you are better off without them. Find people who love you for who you are, not bigots. Thankfully given how queer friendly the Despair Time cast is, she stands a good chance making good friends here.

Veronika only took on her talent to distract herself from her impulsive need to self harm herself for fun

While self harm is sadly a more common condition then you think, Veronika's need to self harm comes from more then her being angry at herself which is the most common reason. So why I do I think Veronika wants to harm herself? One word; simulation.

Maybe Veronika isn't very good with her emotions and hates the fact she cannot feel them, but regardless of your emotional state, pain is often something you can feel so maybe she hurts herself whenever she wants to feel something. This reminds me of Lemon from Beastars as due to his status as a carnivore-herbivore hybird because omnivores apperantely don't exist in this world, he cannot feel emotions so whenever he feels like he wants to have a emotion, he would often stab himself to feel the pain. There's also the fact he hates the spots from his abusive leopard mother so he would often get them covered by tattoos which he hires a backyard sloth tattoo artist who has actually killed his patients in the past due to how slow he puts them on, but being the masocist Lemon is, he enjoys that.

Then she discovered the horror genre and since fear is a primal reaction like pain is, this is probably what drew her to it, to the point she wanted to learn everything about it. Plus its far less painful for her then self harming is.

J hide her name and birthright to pretend she isn't the daughter of Maribella Rosales

This is literally the first secret we uncover as Arturo has it and being the celebitry simp he is, is amazed how he never noticed he was right next to the daughter of one the most popular actresses of all time, much to J's disgust.

Given what J has told us, it seems Maribella was a terrible mother as she would often use her kids to promote herself, and this probably why J became so tom boyish as a way to rebel against her mother. Being a special effects artist would be something she could easily learn due to being in Hollywood all the time, and since its a job in the background, she would be away from the limelight just like she prefers it.

Is it any wonder why in A Student Out of Time, Maribella and Emma hate each other?

Hu is quite the hopeless child, dying once wasn't enough so she tried to unalive herself three times

Everyone talks about Hu having depression due to the fact she tried to access the Afterlife Theater three time, and that its probably from Sinophobia that she had to endure growing up, this contrubtes to her Mother Hen personality and why she feels she needs to help everyone so she can feel like she means something.

But something many have forgot is the fact she "died once" this implied she was caught in a near death experience and the experience of living through it shattered her enough to want to kill herself. My best guess is that her family or someone close to her was killed in a accident she was caught up in but she lived while her loved one didn't. Or maybe she died in a sense she was clinically dead but the doctors were able to revive her.

Its another one we need context for and as such I'm sure Hu will at one point talk about it in the future.

Blackmail, rumours, lying, stealing, slander. Arei did everything she could to ruin her sisters' lives.

We get the full explanation for this one where Arei explains her two older sisters were complete bullies who tormented her day in and day out, and eventually Arei couldn't take it anymore and did actions she framed her sisters for and got them send to reform school.

However it seems she wants to be a good person despite all this and this drives a lot of her actions in Chapter 2, and she became Bubble's waifu. Which as we are soon to learn is the kiss of death as that meant Arei was gonna get killed.

Very tragic and no wonder people like Arei as the one Mean Girl who broke the cycle, and I am curious what her bonus video will be about.

Rose took on her talent to earn money for her family, but she's since put them into a livetime of debt

This is another one we get full context for as Teruko gets this secret and asks Rose about it. She explains that her family were dirt poor so by using her photographic memory, she could flawlessly copy paintings and sell them for a nice profit. But she got caught one day and was only bailed out by Duke Spurling who could write off all her debts as long as all paintings she makes are offically his.

The Spurlings are defitintely the most sus people here as its very likely they are the ones in charge of America's Hope's Peak Academy and have a lot of influence in the backstories for a few characters. I wouldn't write these guys off just yet. Still it sucks to be Rose and no wonder she doesn't take joy in painting anymore as anything she makes is worthless.

Min always treated the competition with ruthlessness to the point she poisoned someone

Now while its not confirmed this belonged to Min the fact nobody else claimed it, makes it seem like its her secret plus it fits with Min's backstory. We know the Ultimate Student was a social experiment by Hope's Peak Academy to see how they can push an entire generation of children, and this would encourge cutthroat behaviour. Poisoning, forging, other underhanded tactics would all be used to get ahead.

Especially as Min admits originally she wasn't gonna be involved until surprise, surprise, Duke Spurling offered to pay for her scholarship fees if she became the Ultimate Student and this could a main drive why Min of all people was more determined to be the Ultimate Student.

No one accepted the fact Nico was non binary, and they had to spend all their life being mocked by their family, their peers, literally everyone

And if you need anymore proof even though Despair Time is in the late 2100s, the socitial norms are the same as now, this is it as normally you would expect enbies to be as accepted as homosexuals are today, but turns out this is not the case. Once again, like with Eden I could pull the old "Nico came from a conservative background" card, but seeing how enbies are not very accepted among society still, it could be anywhere really.

Another more sinister idea I'm getting is that since megacorporations and rich people rebuild the world after the Tragedy, it could be that LGBTQ rights have regressed to be even worse then they are now, as most rich people are conservative in nature. The only reason they claim to support LGBTQ is because its not socially acceptable to be a bigot, and customers would vote with their wallets, but if they are in charge, they have no need to act all friendly and just be like they truly are. Thus Eden and Nico being so scared about exposing their sexualities could be a more deeply rooted fear then it seems. Doesn't explain why Ace and Whit, two other queers don't have the same issues, but maybe Ace is aggressive due to people being homophobic to him all the time and Whit can just laugh back at any bigots, removing any power they have.

It does warm my heart that everyone is very accepting of Nico once it comes out they are a enby, since while Ace does still bully Nico, he never misgenders them once. Everyone just calls Nico by their preferred pronouns and that's how it should be.

Xander blames himself for the death of his family and wished he died with them

Again this is one who's never confirmed but most assume this is Xander's. We know from his bonus video that Xander's family was wiped out in a plague caused by the Spurlings who got away scott-free which inspired Xander to become the Ultimate Rebel.

But this shows he has severe survivor's guilt from the whole thing. Maybe this why when the mastermind told him to kill Teruko he was so willing to do so as even if he was voted guilty and killed, he would be happy with that since it means he will be with his family again.

The Mastermind cannot pick a motive for Teruko since she has so many and the Killing Game is her fault

David claims this is Xander's but he's lying as its Teruko's 100%. This why I suspect the Mastermind, having lost Xander, decided to make David their next agent to try and kill Teruko off.

I have mentioned the main goal of Despair Time's Killing Game is to kill Teruko. Given her background this could be for a variety of reasons but maybe the mastermind was wronged by her luck and wants her removed. Its the reason why Ayumu was targeted for death in Re:Birth aftet all. Expect Teruko has the personality to match what having such chaotic powers would do to someone.

It will be very interesting to see the mastermind's motives for wanting Teruko dead and how David, who's obviously their latest pawn will handle such matters.

And that is my analysis of the Despair Time motives. As this is the only other full motives we know from a fanganronpa I've read, unless you guys want me to speculate what I believed the rest of Trigger Happy Havoc's motives were, this will be the last time I do this.

I think "countdown to his final show" and its direct continuation, "and i'll be in denial for atleast a little while" by drewsterling on ao3 are the only fics to send me on the verge of tears. Not like. Full on crying but I teared up a lot. I don't cry over books, let alone fanfiction, but these fics have DESTROYED me mentally I cannot stop thinking about them

Haha I have been very lucky that for the most part people have been so kind and lovely and wonderful and supportive! ❤️ I did have one experience with an anon (On AO3 and on Tumblr) that wasn't very nice over the summer, but I know their anger was coming from a place of their own personal hurt. While I was upset in the moment I have some very lovely mutuals who were so kind and supportive and encouraging. These days I hope that user is doing better and that they have been able to find their own inner peace. My mom always says that "hurt people, hurt people" and I just really hope they are doing well and wish I could have helped in some way.

BUT I don't think it's a bad idea to remember that we are all doing this for FREE and for FUN and if you come across a fic that you don't agree with, are triggered by, or that contains content you don't enjoy, it is your responsibility as a reader to hit the back button and remove yourself from that situation, especially when tags are used appropriately as well as additional, more detailed warnings in the author's note. Everyone has different life experiences and something that might be triggering and upsetting to one person, could be a way to heal and process for someone else. One person's trauma and life experience is not more valid or more "correct" than someone else's and personally I find it really important that we treat everyone and their experiences with respect. If I'm upset or bothered by something, or even just that I don't really like, I know that I personally will go "hm this fic must not be for me" and then go and find one that is.

TDI Advice wanted!

Hi TD fans! I'm planning a rewrite of TDI, the cast will be 18 for in-universe reasons (think legal contracts, I'm not gonna be weird about them). I'm aiming to make it more realistic and in line with the 2007 aesthetic, i.e era appropriate lingo & references, mobile phones are rare, homophobia is a bigger concern etc, but I'm wondering how far I should take it?

In the end I'll write what I enjoy, but should I lean more heavily into the gritty side of reality TV both on and behind the screen, include more notable sexism, potential slurs and creepy behaviours etc? The point is for there to be believable drama in-universe and the topics planned all have some merit to be present. I have some hard lines I'll never cross (see last tags on the post for those curious) and I want people familiar with the themes to feel seen rather than exploited reading it.

At the end of the day the cast are just youngsters getting to know each other and themselves. I want to humanize them and write believable conflicts without demonizing anyone, it is intended as a character driven story after all. But I also want to know what others think would make for an enjoyable read/take on the show.

The cast will inevitably diverge from their canon counterparts, but I am unsure how to handle certain characters, an example being LeShawna. She's clearly based on a racist stereotype, but her personality, background and lingo are a huge part of her appeal and I'd rather portray her in a better light than change her from the ground up. If you have any pointers I can keep in mind for her or anyone else you think is often portrayed poorly in canon or fanon then please let me hear your takes! This goes for non-TDI castmates as well, even if they don't show up in the story I wanna know what people think does and doesn't work for them and their tropes/traits cause it might still be relevant!
