Since starting this blog I am pretty baffled by the amount of people who are convinced that they have to write a novel. They have to write (Sure! Great! Good for you!), and it has to be a novel. As if that's that's the only thing that deems someone a "real writer".

Which I mean clearly they're all getting that information from somewhere. No judgement. It's - uh - incorrect, though.

Short stories are not any easier than novels just because they're shorter. If you think one is easier than the other, that's probably just because you take to the structure better - which is a good thing for you. At this point I can writer 50k+ words no problem - but creating an entire, satisfying story with a sliver of that length is incredibly difficult for me. If you've followed my blog for a while, you'll find that most of my posts are long as shit. I am a rambler.

If you're attuned to lore and world building, you'd probably be able to create a pretty amazing table top campaign. Or even like an ARG or something. Oh man I'd love more ARGs in the world, especially ones not strictly horror so I can get into them without being spooked.

if you love characters and dialogue, plays are a great way to express that. Your whole story is essentially in your dialogue. If you have a sense of what I can only describe as narrative perspective, screenplays would probably be a great thing to try.

All of these are writing. A lot of these are often more accessible than a novel. If you're someone who laments a lack of feedback when posting work online, producing a play gives you the opportunity to witness an audience react to your work live. Or running a campaign allows you to collaborate and interact directly with your party (the audience proxy of sorts), creating memories through storytelling.

We need all of this! Storytelling has evolved over time, and while novels are cool shit it is goofus behavior to completely ignore all the new opportunities the modern age offers. One of the most compelling stories I've seen recently is the fucking Walten Files, an online analog horror series. I genuinely think most of the best voices in modern horror are in analog and digital horror.

So yeah allow yourself to explore from writing. Anyone who sees what you do and says you aren't a "Real Writer" are dipshits and they can write their own New York Times Bestseller if they're so goddamned concerned about it.

If you want to write stories and you feel like you're not managing to write the way you want to, maybe you haven’t found your medium yet.

I’m not talking about making money, I’m not talking about getting some agent or publisher to see money in your work. I’m talking about you, writing what you want to write.

I love writing. I do not love writing novels. They hurt me, physically. I have been so much happier since I stopped trying to force myself to write novels and disappeared into my flash fiction and short stories.

Maybe novels aren’t your thing either. And maybe short stories aren’t! Maybe your words want to be poured into poems, or songs, or TTRPG campaings, or drabbles, or podcasts, or anecdotes, or (screen)plays, or something else entirely!

There are so many ways to be a writer, and even more to be a storyteller. You don’t have to let yourself be bullied by a medium that does not suit your creativity.

Any love triangle with two overblot boys tends to be really messed up, even after said overblot, but Leona and Riddle don’t have that much prior beef that turns the love triangle into a biohazard.

Leona will have his good ol inferiority complex to keep him company if rejected, but he doesn’t feel like he is in that much direct competition with Riddle, which spares him some of the heartache that a love triangle with Vil or Malleus would give.

Riddle will be haunted by his perfectionism and romantic stupidity if rejected, but he’s one of the more stable post overblot boys, so you don’t have much to fear. Probably.

5. Love Without the Drama: Viktor is a low-key boyfriend, and not in a “let’s just chill and pretend we’re not together” way. He’s just not into big romantic gestures or wild drama. He’d rather have a quiet night working in his lab together, but every so often he’ll grab your hand in his (awkwardly, but sweetly) while you both super casually discuss your favorite theoretical physics concepts. You’re like, “This is literally the most romantic thing that’s ever happened to me, I can’t handle this.” 😳

6. The “Are You Okay?” Overthinker: Viktor’s probably the type to randomly text you, “Hey, how’s your day? Is everything fine?” and you’re like, “Yeah, I’m good, Viktor, chill.” But then he goes into full-on overdrive mode and starts analyzing the exact text you sent, trying to figure out if you meant something by it. And you’re like, “Viktor, it’s literally 2 AM. Relax.” You have to assure him you didn’t just casually text something cryptic like “it’s fine” and now he thinks you’re in mortal danger.

7. Incredibly Supportive but Doesn’t Show It Like a Normal Human: He’s the boyfriend who’ll be your biggest cheerleader but won’t say it out loud. You’ll be all nervous about an exam or some big project, and Viktor? He’ll show up with a bunch of mechanical doodads and a carefully thought-out “This will help you get through this,” but no words. He’s like, “You’ve got this,” but it’s through his deeply nerdy and complex inventions. Also, you’re pretty sure he just hacked your Wi-Fi so you could study in peace. You appreciate it, but like… he’s too much.

hi Blue! I am absolutely IN LOVE with the "Reports From Unknown Places" series. If you don't mind me asking, how did you learn to draw the clouds and the sky so well? I've always found the prospect very daunting, but you draw them in a way that simply amazing! Do you have any tips for brushes/practice?

Thank you so much for the message, and your kind words! I'm so glad you enjoy Reports.

I completely understand how one might find drawing the sky daunting. I still regularly give myself headaches when working on reports. Everyone has their own issues when it comes to drawing, though.

For instance, this might sound a bit absurd, but one of my main issues as an illustrator is that I don't think well in 3D, and I ended up realising that I was unconsciously thinking about the sky as a flat image. When I started drawing clouds as objects moving in space, everything became a little easier.

(This is the kind of epiphany that I had. Truly a revolution in my mind. Now I can totally rotate clouds in my brain.)

This all came about as I kept on drawing more and more, sure, but the most important part really was watching clouds for myself, as much as possible, and to try and notice things every time. It's mostly silly stuff, especially at first, like oh yeah, I guess clouds produce shadows on other clouds too. Wow! Or, huh, this cloud doesn't have the same density throughout, so the light scatters differently inside of it.

Because it's all fundamentally physics, it ended up sounding incredibly simple once I had noticed it. Of course! It's all logical! I had just never connected the dots before I saw it in person.

So I also bought some books, and watched videos (all those airplane videos are fantastic), read websites, looked at pictures. Everything was helpful in one way or another. Listen, I knew about cirrus and cumulonimbus and that was pretty much it, at first. So looking at diagrams about how high cirrus are in comparison to stratocumulus, for instance, was a revelation. Looking at the life cycle of cumulonimbus explained so much for me.

These are studies I did on the side of Reports, in November 2020, then April 2021, and the third one in September 2023:

I think I'm able to look at these and tell that I got progressively more confident because I understood what I was drawing a lot better.

If I had to say, a few concrete things I learned that work for me is being bold, not to be afraid of contrast and sharp edges, and to treat light as an actor of its own. I can't find it right now, but I once read a quote by (I think!) Cezanne that went something like "I'm not painting the mountain, I'm painting the air between me and the mountain". I think it's the most helpful thing I've ever heard for painting and drawing. It's obviously especially relevant here. The air changes everything.

The streets of Montreal were buzzing with fans and excitement as Lando Norris walked out of the McLaren motorhome after a solid qualifying session. He had bagged P3, and while it wasn’t pole, it was still a prime spot to fight for the podium—and maybe even a win. Zak Brown, his boss and occasional partner-in-crime, clapped him on the back with a wide grin.

��Good job today, kid,— Zak said. —You earned yourself a night off. What do you say we head to that tattoo shop I mentioned?—

Lando smirked. Zak had been talking about this tattoo ever since his Miami win last month. He wanted to commemorate the team’s victory with a track outline on his forearm.

—Sure,— Lando said with a shrug. —Why not? Let’s get you inked up, boss.—

As they walked into the tattoo shop, the smell of antiseptic and ink greeted them. The place was modern, with sleek black furniture and walls adorned with framed artwork. Zak looked around like a kid in a candy store, while Lando leaned casually against the counter, texting Amelie.

Lan🧡: Guess where I am.

Ames💛: Considering the time? A bar or a bad decision.

Lan🧡: Close. Tattoo shop with Zak.

Ames💛: OMG, no way. Is Zak actually doing it?

Lan🧡: Yep. Miami track. Says it’s “team spirit.” 😂

Ames💛: Love that for him. Are YOU getting one? 👀

Lan🧡: Tempted. What should I get?

Ames💛: Hmm… a tribute to your incredible girlfriend? Maybe my face on your arm.

Lan🧡: Bold choice. What about your name?

Ames💛: Nah, too basic. Do an “A” or something cute.

Lan🧡: Bet.

Ames💛: You wouldn’t.

Lan🧡: Watch me.

Lando chuckled at their banter, but as he looked around the shop, an idea sparked in his mind. It was reckless, maybe even stupid, but it was also... perfect.

When Zak got called to the chair, Lando casually approached one of the artists, a young woman with bright purple hair.

—Hey,— he said, lowering his voice. —Think you could fit me in for something small?—

The artist raised an eyebrow, glancing over at Zak, who was laughing as he showed the artist his design.

—What are we talking about?— she asked.

Lando tapped his shoulder, just below the edge of his shirt sleeve. —A small ‘A’ here. Simple, clean, nothing fancy.—

The artist nodded. —Easy enough. You sure about this?—

Lando grinned. —Completely.—

While Zak was busy wincing through his session, Lando slipped into the second chair. The artist prepped his shoulder, and as the needle buzzed to life, he felt a mixture of excitement and nerves.

—This your first tattoo?— she asked as she worked.

—Yeah,— Lando admitted. —But it’s for someone special, so I think it’s worth it.—

The tattoo didn’t take long—just a few minutes of sharp pressure before the artist leaned back with a satisfied nod.

—All done,— she said, handing him a mirror.

Lando craned his neck to look at the tiny ‘A’ etched onto his skin. It was subtle, just a couple of centimeters tall, but it was perfect.

—Looks great,— he said, his smile widening.

Back at the hotel, Lando called Amelie.

—What’s up, troublemaker?— she teased as she answered, her face lighting up on the screen.

—Oh, nothing much,— he said casually. —Just wanted to show you something.—

He angled the camera to his shoulder, pulling his shirt slightly aside to reveal the fresh tattoo.

Amelie froze.

—Lando,— she said, her voice a mix of disbelief and awe. —You didn’t.—

—I did,— he replied, grinning like a kid who’d just gotten away with something naughty.

She stared at the screen, her fingers covering her mouth. —You seriously got an ‘A’ for me?—

—For you,— he confirmed, his tone softer now. —It’s where you usually kiss me, so... felt right.—

Her heart felt like it might burst. —Lando... that’s the sweetest, and dumbest, thing you’ve ever done.—

—You love it,— he said confidently.

—I do,— she admitted, shaking her head with a laugh. —But if you ever regret it....—

—Not a chance,— he interrupted. —I love you, Amelie. And this? It’s just ink. You’re what matters.—

She smiled, her eyes glistening. —You’re such a sap, Norris.—

—Only for you,— he shot back, winking.

As they continued talking, teasing, and laughing, Amelie couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by how much he cared. Lando Norris, reckless and endearing as ever, had a piece of her etched onto his skin—and onto her heart.
