Tell me why musical theatre kids are fucking INCAPABLE of understanding that characters can MAKE BAD DECISIONS?????

there are several shows I consider ADJACENT to the dead teenager musical canon, but not strictly an example. for example Beetlejuice absolutely checks all the boxes- except, crucial, the teenager is not dead. Six is another show on the cusp; with the exception of Katherine Howard, all the dead people are adults, but the vibes are 1000% in this wheelhouse. on the other hand, West Side Story, which I did include, has everything BUT the general vibes. but it's a predecessor to all that came before it so leaving it out doesn't feel right. Thrill Me is on the cusp for both vibes and literal definition; the vibes more subdued than this kind of show, but still there, and the teenagers are murderers, not dead.

I feel like there should be an alignment meme for this kind of show, like "lawful", "neutral", "chaotic" for the vibes and the presence of dead teenagers.

giving the boys musicals because i'm obsessed

time- hamilton. he's basic and watched it when everyone else did in the pandemic, but something about it appeals to him...

wars- chicago, it's perfectly dramatic

wild- six. yes he knows, it's not really a musical, but the upbeat songs are just so ! fun!

legend- hadestown, the folk-y vibe is really his thing

hyrule- he's fond of wicked, especially 'defying gravity'

sky- into the woods, someone tells him it's cute about fairytales and he stars going 'i did NOT sign up for this' in the second half but finds out he actually ends up liking

twi- in the heights, even though they're in the city and he grew up in the country, the tight-knit community just really reminds him of home

dark- has never listened to a musical in his life

four- dear evan hansen, he loves the music but doesn't really like the plot but he'll still listen to it

shadow- beetlejuice. 1000% beetlejuice (but he's actually lydia lmaooo)

It's a nice evening to send random asks. Please tell me your top 5 songs from musicals I should try singing, before I got SIX The Musical soundtrack stuck in my head for good. Also do you like covers of musical songs in other languages? :>

Getting SIX stuck in your head doesn't sound like a bad thing, in my opinion- lord knows I would prefer it over some of the songs that I get stuck in my head. 😅

For the latter part of the question: sure! I can't say I exactly go looking for the songs, to be completely truthful, but I really like what they did for a West Side Story revival and translated and sung half the songs into Spanish; "The Quartet" from that revival album is, to me, way more powerful having it sung in both Spanish and English, blending together beautifully.

For the former part of the question- here's my top 5 favorites- only English, alas:

1. Nonstop from Hamilton- a go to favorite for me; this is the song I play when I want to get shit done, when I need a boost, when you just want to reminder to go for your dreams and a fine example of Lin Manuela Miranda favorite style of blending chorus.

2. Masochist from Love Hate Nation- from "Be More Chill" Joe Iconis, this is from a later musical of his and a queer anthem bop; don't let the title fool you, in it the actress sings about how she "isn't no Masochist" and to be truthful of who you are. The song is also originally sung by wonderful trans actress Emerson Mae Smith, who brings power and soul into the voice of Kitty, who sings this queer pride ballad.

3. I'm Alive from Albert Cashier Musical- definitely a hidden favorite from a concept musical album, this is from a musical I hope to one day get a proper album and production; the musical is based on the story of Albert Cashier, a ex Union Civil War Soldier who went to trial as it was discovered, years later & after the war, that he was AFAB. It tells 2 stories; one where he's old and stuck in a hospital, and one when he's in the war. I saw a concert version performance at Greenwich Village and fell in love with the whole musical, which is a mix of folk-pop, and trans celebration. So far there's only 2 songs available on YouTube, and "I Gotta Try" is one you definitely need to listen to, but "I'm Alive" has such a good beat and a catchy chorus that I just love.

4. Paciencia y Fe from In the Heights (Original Broadway Version)- from the older hit musical of Manuel Miranda, Paciencia y Fe is a gorgeous song about past dreams and hopes, and Olga Merediz voice is *phenomenal* hands down. Honestly, I have a soft spot for the musical in general, as it was my first show I got to work on outside of academic (it was a regional production, nothing fancy, but still,) and truly, while I saw the movie and liked it well enough, the Original Broadway version is going to top that over the film in my heart. To be honest, I would love to have Merediz sing this is full Spanish- it would be 1000% *amazing*

And there's a lot of other favorites as well- Hadestown is a fantastic album, I enjoyed Dear Evan Hansen, I'm a sucker for La Vie Boheme from Rent- I'm old, lol.

"Prom" has some great songs, and I like Be More Chill- "Michael in the Bathroom" c'mon- also "Last on Land" which is from Joe Iconis (from another musical of his that hasn't had a full performance yet) is a favorite that speaks to my soul and okay, I listen to this one pretty often but hell, I got to be truthful and say:

5. For Good From Wicked- Listen. Listen. Wicked was my first official Broadway tour, it was the first showtune album I listened to that wasn't from my parents' collection (I grew up listening to Andrew Lloyd Webber) and for one Christmas I got a playbill poster that has since been professionally framed. Wicked is near and dear to my heart. And as much as "Defying Gravity" and "Popular" are, well, *popular*, "For Good" is a great song, as it really shows the balance between Menzel's & Chenoweth's voices; you get it in the power ballad "Defying Gravity" but to a more subdued way that I appreciate; it's a goodbye, it's a thank you, it's I'm sorry, it's two women who aren't sure if they changed for the better, but fuck, they changed, and they changed because of their relationship. And they're still grateful that they had each other in their lives.

Introduction

not only was she able to write something that made so much sense at 3am in the morning, she was also able to include every single reason why he deserved better, leaving the reader with no reason to dislike the character in the book or musical (except maybe the film - which is also addressed, nothing was left out!!)

it was incredibly extraordinary and despite the fact it's only 1am i am hoping to have the same essay-writing in the middle of the night luck.

the essay was absolutely amazing and anyone who hasn't read it must go and read it now, i don't care if you've never seen dear evan hansen (go and see it now) , i don't care if you don't like connor murphy (i care a lot go read the essay) and basically anything you have to say i don't care, reading the essay will solve every single problem you have

connor murphy is not a bad character at all and nobody could make him understood better than corner-murfee (read the essay now)

anyways i'm done with good writing so here is a list of words to describe how good the essay is (which will hopefully get the word count up so that i can beat however many words the original essay was - not that i want to i love the essay with all my heart)

that somehow isn't a lot of words, and the sad thing is i actually had to look up synonyms for words to discover even half of them, and you know why that is?? no skilled writer, or practiced essay person could ever even come close to the standards of the essay on why connor murphy deserved better, because it WAS superior (go read it) and if you think this essay is good , then you will think that the other essay is even better, i mean it actually has grammar and stuff actually makes sense and somehow it has so many words and isn't just rambling (which incase you can't tell i'm relying on)

am i anywhere near 1000 ? probably not. am i gonna give up? probably

you know why? it takes skill and dedication to produce a peice as astounding as corner-murfee's on connor murphy, which is why it should be read by everyone because it is so super fab

conclusion

no essay can ever beat the one i have just read (iver and over)

the average person (me) can only write an essay for like 10 minutes before giving up

Help I have to answer a phone call and I'm hecka nervous and don't know what to do I have phone anxiety

Ahhhh I have that too! (I normally just text everyone, if possible? I either decline or ignore the call and text them immediately after—“Sorry, I can’t talk right now, but I can text. What’s up?). 

But sometimes it really is necessary to talk on the phone. Take deep breaths, maybe go somewhere where you’re near someone you trust to make you feel more comfortable (this helps me, but one of my friends needs to be alone and in silence to take calls without feeling sick, so that might help you?). Also, I normally try to have some excuse to end the call short ready just in case it gets overwhelming (i.e. my delivery just arrived, I’m getting another call, etc.). 

You could also answer the phone real quick to make sure it’s not an emergency. “Hey, are you okay?” and if everything’s alright, you could say, (I think honesty is always for the best) “That’s cool, but my anxiety’s acting up right now, and I really can’t talk on the phone at the moment. But I still wanna talk to you. Would it be alright if we just text instead?”

Mostly, though, I try to remember that normally, if I feel like I’m being horribly awkward, it’s all in my head! It really is! The other person rarely notices, and on the off chance they do notice, they probably don’t care.

“Marinette, are you okay?”

Marinette turned slightly from her position, leaning on the railing of her balcony, looking out at the world to see the little red and black spotted being who had asked her the question.

“Yeah, Tikki,” she said in a quiet, almost sad voice. “I just… woke up an hour ago and couldn’t fall back asleep. So I decided to come up here to do some thinking.”

Tikki flew over to her chosen, a concerned look crossing her tiny little face as she faced her. “What seems to be troubling you?”

The dark-haired girl blew out a raspberry, ruffling her fringe. “The question should be what isn’t troubling me?”

“What do you mean?”

“Well…” she trailed off, the beginnings of being overwhelmed evident on her face

“Can we try to have an optimistic outlook?” The Kwami of Creation interrupted her holder, knocking her out of the downward spiral for the moment. “Can we buck up just enough to see the world won't fall apart? Maybe this day we decide we’re not giving up before we’ve tried? Today, let's make a new start.” Tikki said as she gave Marinette’s cheek a nuzzle.

A sudden noise interrupted them, making the two glance in the direction from whence it came. Noticing it was her phone with a notification, the designer picked it up to see that Alya had texted her.

“I wonder what Alya wants this early,” Marinette said with a sidelong glance to her Kwami. Tikki gave her a shrug, just as confused as the girl sitting beside her.

“How did this get turned into me being jealous of her?” Marinette asked out loud, turning to face the little red embodiment of Creation with wide eyes.

Turning back to her text conversation, the dark-haired girl furrowed her brows as she tried to get her point across to her supposed “best friend”.

“Another stellar conversation for the scrapbook,” the dark haired girl quoted with a sigh as she began typing again.

                      I’ll see u in class

“Another stumble as I’m reaching for the right thing to say,” she muttered quietly with a shake of her head, dismayed at the direction the conversation had taken. “I’m kinda coming up empty, can't find my way to you...”

MDCDesigns: yeah...see u

With a sigh, Marinette exited the text messaging program, checked the time, and slipped her phone into her handbag. It was still pretty early for her to head to school, but she figured that there was a first time for everything.

“It's a ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ kind of day, isn’t it, Marinette,” Tikki commented as she phased into the bag, giving her holder a sympathetic look as she did.

“Oh, Tikki,” the designer said with a humorless chuckle, pinching the bridge of her nose as she headed towards her trap door. “It most certainly is!”

Her parents were surprised to see their perpetually late daughter up and about so early.

”Marinette,” her mom called out before the girl could make her escape. ”We’re going to need you to help out after school today. A big order came in that your father and I need your help to take care of for tonight.”

The dark-haired girl stifled a grimace. She normally didn't mind helping out in the bakery, but today wasn't exactly a normal day.

”I would, Maman, but I'm being assigned a big group project at school today, and I'm not sure when the due date is yet,” Marinette said tactfully.

”I know that your schoolwork comes first, dear,” Sabine countered gracefully as her husband lumbered over to join the pair. ”However, we really could use your help. It would only be for about an hour, give or take.”

It was the give or take that worried her.

Resigned to her fate, Marinette bowed her head dejectedly and mumbled, ”Yes, Maman.”

”Thank you. You're a good girl, Marinette, ” said her father, patting her on the back before heading back to the ovens.

Grabbing a croissant and a to-go cup of coffee, Marinette left her parents with a kiss to their cheeks and a wave before starting her daily walk to school.

As she started up the stairs at the school’s entrance, she was met with the one person who would sour her day.

Lila.

“Well, if it isn’t Mari-brat,” the Italian vixen sneered.

“What do you want, Lie-la?” Marinette asked as she continued up the front steps, keeping her eyes to the front.

“What I want is for you to go down in flames,” the brunette said in a sing-song voice as she walked beside the secret heroine. “Are you ready to give up yet?”

At the top of the stairs, the designer spun to face her nemesis, blue eyes flashing like lightning. “Let me tell you something,” she growled. “I do not make deals with liars, and I never give up easily.”

“Oh,” the fake fox said coyly, “but you will. I’ve already won, you know. You just haven’t realized it yet.”

With a flick of her brown locks, Lila sauntered away, ready to claim her next victim.

Marinette glared after her, wishing with all of her might that the bitch would finally get caught up in her web of lies. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes.

“Another masterful attempt ends with disaster,” she muttered, bringing a hand to her face to give it a slight rub. “Pour another cup of coffee and watch it all crash and burn,” she continued as she headed to the locker room, ready to just get the day over with.

Opening the door and finding the room empty, the designer kept singing under her breath as she reached her locker and gathered her belongings for the day. “It’s a puzzle, it's a maze. I tried to steer through it a million ways, but each day’s another wrong turn,” she took another deep breath as she closed the locker door. The secret heroine felt her Kwami pat her through her purse on her hip in reassurance.

“Does anybody have a map, anybody maybe happen to know how the hell to do this? I don’t know if you can tell, but this is me just pretending to know,” Marinette sang slightly louder, looking around as she left the locker room and crossed the courtyard, confident now that no one was paying attention to her. “So where’s the map? I need a clue, ‘cause the scary truth is I’m flying blind… I’m flying blind... I’m flying blind, and I’m making this up as I go...”

Reaching her classroom, Marinette discovered it to be empty. 'Just as well,' she thought, setting her bags down and pulling out her tablet, sketchbook, phone, and earbuds. ‘It's bound to be a long day.'

Feeling inspired, she sat down and opened up her sketchbook to an empty page. She then pulled up the ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ soundtrack on her phone, plugged in her earbuds, and set to work.

Top 5 musicals (and why, of you're comfortable sharing)

thanks for the ask!! 💜 this is not in any particular order because that honestly depends on my mood shdjdjdj okay time to overshare on the internet

1. spring awakening!!! ive been obsessed with this show for YEARS. i listen to the songs all the time. which is kind of concerning but they slap so it’s okay 😌 i’m not sure why exactly this show resonates with me so much,,, i often find myself drawn to tragedies because of the range of emotions they make me feel and for spring awakening in particular the characters are very easy to feel deeply for. moritz has been one of my favorite characters for So Long, his story is weirdly comforting to me in a way? idk his songs are validating to listen to 😳 also we stan his amazing hair!!! i also love the message of the show but honestly the musical doesn’t do it justice!! if you like the musical PLEASE read the play, it goes so much deeper into the themes and characters!! but yeah spring awakening slaps, who needs therapy when i can just blast those you’ve known and cry??? on a more serious note alot of my love for the show can be attributed to nostalgia now because i’ve loved it for so long; rewatching DWSA in particular is really comforting 💜

2. bare a pop opera, not to be confused with bare the musical ahshdhdjdjdj 😡 okay the whole thing i said about tragedies above applies here, but also this show is just SO SMART. bare writers spare some brain cells pls 😔 this show hurts me so much and i listen to it all the time because i’m just that emo i guess. all the songs are gorgeous and the characters are brilliantly written and even the music is amazing!! those motifs!!! 😭😭 also the message is very important and unfortunately still relevant. i wish this show were more popular because i know it would help a lot of people going through similar things. anyways i’m obsessed with this musical and i truly can’t articulate how much i love it. 1000/10

3. hadestown!! again, the tragedy aspect appeals to me sjjddjdjjd but also this just such a pretty show and i love it so much. the music style is really REALLY lovely and the songs are so smart!!! i love that it makes me use my 3 brain cells while listening to it (😔). also just,,, that whole theme of storytelling and cycles and love and hope,,, 💜💜💜 also i love wedding song it’s my JAM, obsessed with how eurydice is like bro do u have money??? and orpheus is like no but i can sing uwu and eurydice is like okay 👁👄👁 ur hot lets get married

4. dear evan hansen! this isn’t a tragedy one point for me 😌 this one kind of personal to me i think because i have rlly bad anxiety that has resulted in Actual Health Problems ahshshdjdb anyways this show (and funnily enough alex boniello who played connor talking about his anxiety during DWSA) was kind of my first actual exposure to mental health Stuff and inspired me to do my own research which was very very helpful!! all that besides i just like the story and how everyone is very tragically human and trying in their own ways. the ending is really lovely and i’m so glad they went that route 💜 and themes of communication and connection!! also anyone who’s been on my blog for 5 seconds knows i love zoe!! she’s one of my favorite characters of all time and hearing requiem for the first time was really an :O moment for me lshdjdjdjdj anyways prayer circle for jordan fisher’s run to not be cut short 😔🙏🏽 (did anyone else watch him on disney channel?? 👀)

5. bandstand!!! why isn’t this musical more popular 😭😭 i love it so much, it has such frank discussions of trauma and moving on and learning to keep on living and also like,, love and friendship 🥺🥺 i also really like historical pieces and this show is set in the 40s, which is reflected by the set and costumes and dialogue and even hair and makeup!! it really shines a light on and humanizes the veterans who were screwed over by the war and had to learn live with the trauma, in the most respectful way,,,, it’s really about them but the way the themes are discussed makes it relevant for anyone trying to move past a hard time. and when julia sings that One Song (no spoilers 😌) i was very :O all the songs are amazing!!! and the romance is so sweet, i didn’t think i’d like it but i was SO wrong shsjjdjdk also the ending is beautiful 😭💜 it’s so nice and hopeful and this show makes me go on a roller coaster of emotions and cry ten million tears. give corey cott his tony challenge 😔😔

So, I’ve decided to open up a Ko-fi and charge for writing commissions/editing since my job has been unsteady and I need the extra cash. You can still support me on Ko-fi without asking for commissions but if you want me to write a fic for you here’s some information you NEED to know before you ask.

To ask for a commission please message me here on Tumblr DO NOT send me an ask.

We will discuss the fic you want me to write you/edit as well as how long it will be. We can set up a reasonable deadline for both of us if you so like.

Payment is made through Ko-fi (so you must have an account there) if not we MUST discuss other ways for me to get payed. I WILL NOT START WRITING UNTIL I AM PAYED IN FULL.

Commission can be pulled out but once the money transaction is made there are NO REFUNDS.

You will receive your fic in full by the discussed deadline.

MY TIME HAS COME Ok, so Be More Chill is great (and has George Salazar!!), also Heathers, Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, A Very Potter Musical, The Book of Mormon, and of course Les Mis. Bonus- I haven’t listened to all of Mean Girls yet but what I’ve heard is great

That’s a lot of musicals yay! And also I know BMC has George Salazar and that might be the only reason to get me compelled to listen to it but other than that…. not my style. But if you like it, that’s great!

So I see here a bunch of the Great Tumblr Musicals (which doesn’t mean they’re bad; they’re great for a reason!).

You might want to check out one of my actual faves (saw this one in NYC; only reason I flew to NYC in April 2018 if I’m honest): Anastasia! Based on the cartoon of the same name from 1997 (which was based on the actual mistery), Anastasia tells the story of a young woman, suffering from amnesia and without any clue of whos she, this woman becomes part of a con where she’s going to pretend to be the Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov, who was supposedly shot during the Russian Revolution but rumour now has it she’s still alive, and her grandmother has a reward out for whoever finds her. A beautiful story with one of the most beautiful sets I have ever seen, this musical will take you from Russia to Paris, led by beautiful orchestrations and fantastic song. The cast album features no one other than Christy Altomare (Spring Awakening 1NT, Mamma Mia and Carrie), Derek Klena (Carrie, Wicked, Dogfight) and Ramin Karimloo (Chess, Les Mis in like 1000 different versions)

I also see you have a taste for Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, judging by your DEH mention. May I recommend you another great one of theirs, definitely underrated and in my opinion better than Dear Evan Hansen and The Greatest Showman combined: Dogfight. Featuring Derek Klena and Lindsay Mendez (who also played Elphaba and Fiyero together on Broadway), Dogfight follows a group of marines on their last few nights in the USA, before they embark on a journey to Vietnam (because this story takes place during the Vietnam war). The marines come up with a little game: a “dogfight”, where they take the ugliest girl they can find to a dance, and the marine with the ugliest date wins the pot. Horrible, right? Eddie (Derek Klena) finds Rose (Lindsay Mendez) but… things don’t go as planned. With its beautiful score this musical is sure to break your heart when you least expect it. 

And a final one that I like to give a little shout out to is Newsies, still one of the most popular musicals today Newsies recounts story of the Newsboys Strike from 1899, led by Jack Kelly. Though the score is pretty damn good, what really strikes me about this musical is the choreography; a mix of classical ballet, tap and idek what else this musical is danced through by actual gods. And good news: there’s a proshot! it was on Netflix but they took it down the other day but I’m sure you can find it online.

Come From Away tour thoughts:

After seeing it earlier this year and listening to the cast album half a dozen times I was worried that I would find a different cast a little disappointing, but there was really no need to worry.

The scene where Hannah (Danielle K. Thomas) and Beulah (Julie Johnson) first meet was well done.

“Me and the Sky”: conversational at the start and built up in very effectively; I could actually feel my heart beating faster as it progressed.  At the end someone nearby really wanted to applaud even though the structure doesn’t allow for it, so they had to settle for a couple of muted claps.

Sound: eh.  So I was grumpy about the sound after seeing Dear Evan Hansen and had similar issues here.  It was fine for most numbers but kind of bothered me during certain group songs (e.g. “You Will Be Found” in DEH or “Prayer” in CFA).  I usually keep some notes on what I see where, and as it turns out, this is the theater where I have noticed sound issues (murky dialogue, harshness) most often, especially in the mezzanine.  (Though earlier this year I thought Soft Power sounded really good – from the orchestra section.)

Biggest laugh: the cardiologists. 

Other performances I particularly liked were James Earl Jones II (Bob and others) and Chamblee Ferguson (Nick, Doug, and others).

At the end, Kevin Carolan (Claude & others) and Megan McGinnis (Bonnie & others) came onstage to make the pitch for BC/EFA.  For larger donations they were giving out posters signed by the tour cast ($50), a bright orange STFD t-shirt designed by Lisa Fudge (daughter of Oz) for $200, and a knit scarf from Lisa Fudge for $1000 (only one of these left), and yellow fisherman’s hats (can’t remember the $).  For some of these items part of the proceeds were to go to the Gander SPCA.
