sunday in review | I
Tumblr media
hello.
I took an unexpected hiatus from this before Christmas - my time, responsibilities and health have shifted in the last couple of months and with several spinning plates, something had to give. But I'm trying it out again - we'll see how it goes, let me know if you have any feedback!
Tumblr media
writing habits.
plotted: - Javi P. x reader for Kel’s ‘Taylor Swift Drabble Challenge’ - Dieter x reader for Kate’s ‘Brandi Carlise Drabble Challenge’
worked on (i.e. jumped into and maybe added like three words, it's been a week): - Sequins!Joel x Reader - Tim x Cagney - Salt Water (I’m determined this will see the light of day at some point this year) - Angsty Dieter x Reader - x3 Lucien x Reader (this man has rotted my brain) - Texas Hold ‘Em anthology
Tumblr media
on the blog this week.
handwritten asks which I’m slowly working my way through so the perfectionist in me isn’t awoken lol. If you’ve come across it I said I’d keep it up until Sunday, but if you want to drop an ask I’ll answer any extras that come through
march madness | 2024 I knew the full 63 was a lofty goal for me, my time to read fanfiction is now at odds with my time to write and that window has slowly gotten smaller. So I’ve been trying to squeeze in time to read where I can (list to be uploaded later)
Tumblr media
what I read.
The One (Dieter) @schnarfer
Let Me Lay Down Beside You (Joel) @jomiddlemarch
Bookworm (Marcus P.) @write-down-your-dreams
easy like Sunday morning (Dieter) @gnpwdrnwhiskey
Delta Landscaping - Chapter 15 (various Pedro characters) @rhoorl
Tumblr media
what I watched.
Road House - this movie knew the assignment
Tumblr media
Lioness - so many ideas involving Frankie running through my head
Tumblr media
9-1-1: Lone Star - watched for Liv Tyler, somehow staying for Rob Lowe, I don't know who I am
Tumblr media Tumblr media
what made my dash happy.
There’s another Frankie Cat in the wild!
Heidi’s Joel AU moodboard
Mel’s Javi edit, who’s coming bar hopping?
Tumblr media
celebrating.
Lolabee's 1 Year of Fic Celebration: 5th-7th April
Tumblr media
fanfic throwback. this is where I go back into my read list and pick one at random to share - because all fic shouldn't be relegated to the archives after they've been shared.
Glass by @idolatrybarbie marcus pike and prompt no. fifteen— “is there anything we can do?” “we won’t be doing anything."

Beyond the Spider-Verse Theory: The Hidden Villain
Tumblr media
So I've left it a few days after watching Across the Spider-Verse to gather my thoughts. And while you can see my review here it's time for some theory crafting for the next movie: Beyond the Spider-Verse
This theory will discuss the existence of another villain behind the scenes
Spoilers for Across the Spider-Verse
So as we know, the main crux of the Spider Society's storyline is that the Web of Life and Destiny (aka the Spider-Verse) apparently hinges on the concept of 'Canon Events', whereby each Spider has to undergo intersecting moments in each mythos. Miguel O'Hara enforces this pattern via the Spider Society, after his attempts to 'break canon' caused the universe he inhabited, taking over from another dead Miguel's life, to die - along with his alternative universe daughter. We also learn that anomalies like this will cause the web to collapse, and thus Miles - having been bitten by another universe's spider to get spider powers, allegedly robbing the powers from another potential spider - and Spot are walking anomalies and their prolonged time in another universe may cause another collapse.
But something doesn't quite add up.
First of all, if Miles and Spot are anomalies, why is their universe still intact? Same can be said for the Earth-42 spider still in a jar. Additionally, why did Miguel's universe collapse if he had the watch that keeps his atoms good in the universe? Isn't he doing exactly what he alleges Miles is doing, taking over another Spider-person who died in this Universe? Also it's highly unlikely that every Spider is subject to the same canon events; Ben Reilly is a clone and Miguel had his DNA mixed with a spider's so surely that disrupts the OG Canon Event of the Spider-bite right? Miguel never had an Uncle Ben or a Captain Stacy moment in his mythos (unless we're suddenly counting the alt!Daughter as the former), plus in Into the Spider-Verse Gwen already said she saved her dad from dying so wouldn't that have disrupted a Canon Event? Do captains even exist for Peter Parked Car or Spidersaurus Rex?
And finally, how can you say Spot and Miles are anomalies and shouldn't be in the universe when Pravitr's Canon Event is only caused by Spot interfering with his universe?
Like I said, it doesn't add up.
So, how do we establish that the idea of 'Canon Events' are not as strict as they seem, that Miles and Spot aren't reality-threatening anomalies, but also explain what happened to the universe that traumatized Miguel - with Peter B. also as witness to verify the story?
Perhaps, someone is manipulating the web behind the scenes.
In the comics, the Web of Life and Destiny is maintained by the 'Master Weaver', a character key to Morlun and his Inheritors, and while I don't think we're going to see the Weaver in Beyond the Spider-Verse I do feel like somebody could be filling that kind of a role. So ask yourself, who do we know in the Spider-Verse who has a unique interest in other dimensions, has the mind to test and tinker, but also has a fascination slash vendetta against the spiders...
Tumblr media
Dr. Olivia Octavius was a highlight of the first movie, but her sudden exit after being hit by a truck was considered an abrupt and unsatisfying end for her. So what if she survived? And when the collider closed she was sucked into the Web of Life and Destiny? An inquisitive mind such as herself would have a wealth of time (well, not literally, given that Miles got a glimpse of the future and Spider Society HQ is in 2099 we can assume that the web exists outside of linear time) to test things, seeing the paths and intersections of other Spiders. Liv however does have one particular Spider she seems drawn to in a negative manner though, Peter B. Parker, so what if Miguel's incident in the universe collapsing was instead an attempted hit towards Peter B., Liv attempting to wipe him out of time by wiping the universe he was in?
It does go deeper, we've seen from the Spot that in his flashback scenes he's always adjacent to Liv, they both identified the Earth-42 spider, and she was the leading scientist on the Collider, so she would have the skills to know this, and if she became able to expand her abilities by being a villainous Master Weaver (like Superior Spider-Man attempted to be by killing the Master Weaver to change his fate), she may also be responsible for directing other Spiders' paths along the same route to manipulate Miguel into his current uncharacteristic way of thinking, she may also be manipulating her colleague Spot to encourage more suffering to the Spiders.
If true, it'll at least give Miguel closure and open the door for him to be apologetic and much less of a dick, but it'd also explain how Miles could become able to divert the idea of Canon Events without destroying his or other universes, liberating each Spider to exist in their own story without having to follow the same pattern. Adding to a much bigger role for Octavius (we did see a lot of variant Doc Ocks in ATSV) would provide a cyclic conclusion to Miles' journey since his other 'first villains' Kingpin and Prowler have been defeated.
But, this is just a theory, there's much room to go other directions, but it was a thought.

I think one of the funniest swedish internet memes is one that I witnessed the day it was created.
So, there’s a swedish youtube channel that reviews movies, most often swedish films and swedubbed films. In one episode, he decided to review a tv show, where every episode is around 5 minutes long.
This show is called ”15 - det är mitt liv” (”15 - that is my life”) and is a series of shorts showing all kinds of problems a 15 year old can have. One episode has someone getting bullied, the next someone with an abusive parent, the next something so simple as they’ve never been kissed. Every episode ends with the character asking ”what should I do?” and the show is often used in schools to let the students discuss what they’d do in the character’s situation. Many of the episodes have been uploaded to youtube, which means people in the comment section can say whatever. And being youtube comments, they often act edgy and write weird things.
So, this youtuber reviews an episode each, and then he reads the comments out loud. And there was one comment that set out a meme forever. I’m gonna translate it to english:
”Why don’t the ones filming help?”
This person thought that the 15 year old in the episode was a real person and that it was not acting, and thus could not understand why the ones filming didn’t help.
Let me tell you, this quote was EVERYWHERE for a while. The review youtuber himself started to make it a running gag after this, one time for example ending a review with ”why don’t you guys commenting help?”. People started to post the quote on other people’s videos. Some girls made a short film and in a Q&A they had about it, someone asked them why the ones filming didn’t help, and they were completely unaware of the meme and were like ”uh… it’s just acting… or… what?”
You can’t see a single clip from a dramatic scene in a swedish show posted on any social media without someone asking ”why don’t the ones filming help?” in the comments. We also do the same with music competitions and someone on stage seems to not have a great time. WHY DON’T THE ONES FILMING HELP?

#MusicMonday Review - June 2024
Five cities, five genres, five themes, five feelings. Give them a listen, with a word from the artists themselves. 🎧
Flesh Machine – F Is For Failing
Tumblr media
Can't you see? It's reality Close friends lie, people die so do I
An empty head can't keep up with all that's being said So why do I strive? And what is this no good life?
Let's begin our long journey in Reykjavík, Iceland with an Alternative Synth Rock with a retro vibe that would instantly fit in a John Hughes teenage movie soundtrack about life's coming of age struggles:
"The track originally was a very chill organ instrumental, almost like a church song, then I got inspired by more 80s anthemic songs that inspired it to be more happy/sad sort of track. Feeling like everything is against you but also almost making fun of yourself for thinking that."
Painted Places – Too Idle To See
Tumblr media
Procrastination takes its toll Communication heals your soul Exaggeration will be your friend If you're wanting to pretend
No matter where I roam I never want to go home and in the middle of my arc I find it hard to sleep in the dark
We fly now to Stockton-on-Tees, UK, for a Garage Rock track that warns about being too close to comfort... sometimes what you need it's right there for the taking, but you may end up not seeing it:
"It came out of pure boredom on a rainy day. I had nothing to do and was in the mood for recording something but didn't have anything written to record. I downloaded a drum sample, looped it then looped some bass lines over the top and then some guitar riffs. Kept at it all day until it grew into this song. Then we used that demo track as a basis for the band to record this track over the top."
S/J – Never Win (feat. Liv Wallace)
Tumblr media
Take me by the hand for a walk on the beach
I whisper through the air how dare you
If only outside would you see me maybe I can be that man
Next stop, Panama City, FL. for an acoustic Alt Country song with a two side love story that's perfect for a duet. Sometimes, you keep waiting for those magic words that may never come... baby you've been my man:
"It is definitely an experience with a certain girl. A love song and story about how it feels to struggle in relationships and never being good enough in your mind for that special person in your life."
Hasse Co – Beautiful Man
Tumblr media
the car came drifting picked me up in the cold your star is fading but you're still the most beautiful man i know
and you show up like a dog again easy living you've got everything
From an acoustic sunny beach setting, we now go to Stockholm, Sweden for some Drum & Bass speedy breakbeats that mask the sorrowful sadness of inevitable change:
"The first instrumental version is actually pretty old, from 2017 I think. The lyrics is about dealing with loss, seeing someone again after a long time, knowing things have changed and trying to accept that.
It's a both sad and happy song I guess. And i just like the phrase you're still the most beautiful man i know sounded. :)"
Electric Fence – Black Soul
Tumblr media
And now I can feel it through all my flesh and bones Controlling me and trying to enslave me
And I fight against it but I know I cannot win That's why you can't play with forces you can't understand
Last stop... Madrid, Spain, for a track with 100% Rock attitude. The story of a man possessed by an evil spirit in the forest. Yes, he's become a black soul:
"Well we came up with the music first and then built the lyrics around it, so one could say that the music itself inspired the lyrics. It has this mysterious vibe that led to some dark storytelling in the lyrics."
Listen to them and much more on the complete Playlist:

Books I read - January 2024
I feel like I've been in a reading slump ever since I started working full time two years ago, so let's see if a monthly review can give me back the magic buzz!
Blackwater 3 : the House, 4 : the War, 5 : the Fortune, and 6 : the Rain, by Michael McDowell. The Blackwater saga has been kind of a suprise editorial success in France, ever since the publishing house Monsieur Toussaint Louverture has bought the rights of this cozy Southern gothic a few years ago - and I can only guess that it's because readers in France never read Southern gothic novels. Don't get me wrong, these books are fine - they read quickly and pleasantly, they focus on a matriarcal family which is in itself surprising for a book written in the 80s, and there are positive LGBT characters in them, and that's good, I guess. The pacing is incredibly slow, which in itself shouldn't be a problem. But the one thing I couldn't pass over was the terrible lowness of the stakes: there is absolutely no consequences in these books, for anyone, ever. The Caskey family, at the center of the saga, only want one thing - more money - and then does nothing with it. Anyway, it wasn't bad, but I'm not overenthusiastic about this one.
The Feelings of the Prince Charles, by Liv Strömquist. Hilarious. I would have liked this one even more if the ideas Liv Strömquist writes about (the hetero-patriarchal model of the couple and of love is a trap for women) hadn't become ubiquitous in the past few years.
Animan, by Anouk Ricard. Why am I not a little frog married to a superhero capable of transforming into any animal, pursued by his nemesis, capable of transforming into any object.
Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli, the Epic Story of the Making of the Godfather, by Mark Seal * . Immediately a new favorite. I started the year by watching the Godfather, developing an obsession for the movie, its characters and its actors, and watching a number of New Hollywood movies. This book was the natural follow-up to that phase. I've also watched The Offer on Paramount plus, so I can say with confidence: the book is better and crazier.
Unfollow, A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church, by Megan Phelps-Roper: I really like Megan P-R's activist work, but I was rather disappointed by her memoir. That's not to say the story isn't worth telling, and the courage she showed in leaving what is, in essence, a cult of homophobic weirdos, is remarkable. But the pace of the narrative was very slow, the ideas repeated several times, and the mystery at the heart of the story (how do you find the strength to leave a fundamentalist environment when you know nothing else?) ultimately remains almost unresolved at the end of the reading.
Currently reading: The Best Minds: A Story of Friendship, Madness, and the Tragedy of Good Intentions, by Jonathan Rosen

As I plan on and have started to expand beyond NuWho, I have been doing research. The EU content plus Classic Who is absolutely daunting and messy so I want to find a way to streamline it for my sake. I already am listening to 8th’s audios and been jumping around in ClassicWho (not completely disordered, there’s a method in madness).
I desire to streamline the process as while I do accept all EU content as canon, I don’t want to be ranking all of this content when ranking Doctor Who stories. Thus, after thinking hard, I have decided to include the audios of 6, 7 and 8 as part of my main continuity created out of convenience.
I include Big Finish and not written media because of how firstly, I can’t really get access to written stuff. Next, Big Finish is the closest thing to a television episode in EU and these three doctors are voiced by their actual actors.
While I will listen to other Big Finish audios eventually, these 3 are the main ones I will focus on and treat them as primary canon for various reasons:
The situation in how Colin Baker was let off plus the immense production issues due to the studio execs would lead to a rather unfair assessment of 6th. Thus, I’m unwilling to judge the merit of the 6th Doctor based on the show alone.
For the Seventh Doctor, I justify his inclusion due to the irresolution of Classic Who. Beyond the movie, I am aware that the show ends inconclusively due to behind the scenes shenanigans and thus I believe that I can determine his run as incomplete.
For the Eighth Doctor, it is pretty self explanatory, his one night tenure and a short film justify using Big Finish to create an era for him. Especially since Night Of The Doctor considers his companions up to Molly as canon.
However, as there are also many stories for each which I’m not pressured to listened to all. I will limit myself and focus on the following:
The Sixth Doctor stand alones (applies to those that I listen too), Sixth’s adventures with Evelyn Smythe, Season 23, his adventures with Charley, the proper departure for 6th and possibly Peri and The Piscon Paradox
The Seventh Doctor’s stand alones (same rules as 6th), his adventures with Ace and Hex, Doctor Klein and possibly Love and War
For the Eighth Doctor, Eight and Charley, Eight and Lucie (Up til To The Death) and Eight with Molly (may take a while to get to)
If you have any recommendations (if you’re reading this), do let me know! Because it’s not that I’m not going to listen to other audios if I have the chance, I’m just trying to make it easier for myself by focusing on a select few first. So yes, in any companion ranking throughout all of Doctor Who, I will include Hex, Evelyn, Charley, Lucie, C’Rizz, Tasmin, Liv (up til the end of Sullivan’s run), Molly and Dr Klein.
On the subject of other Doctors, I will explain that:
I’m not including BF for 1-4 because their tenures were at least not fucked over. This in particular applies to 4 because Baker has had like 7 seasons, he doesn’t need a fighting chance.
I was tempted to include 5 but I went against this because Davidson did leave on his own accord. However, his audios will be next after I finish my “main timeline.” Though Spare Parts I will listen soon (but not include it in any rankings beyond Big Finish rankings)
9 is actually pending review due to his turbulent relationship behind the scenes. While his case is more open, there’s also room to deny the need for BF due to the manner in which Series 1 was written. Another reason to deny BF for now is because he has a less “formed” BF era due to his recent entry.
10 should be self explanatory and if you ask more questions, I will legitimately have no words for you. However, if I have the time and money by the end of this, I would love to listen to the Donna Noble and 10 adventures and The Timelord Victorious Event in full.
11-12 for very obvious reasons, especially since Smith and Capaldi haven’t signed on and have very cohesive runs.
13 would be under review because of how Covid Productions messed up Flux’s production. However, she has no BF content as of now and even if she manages to develop a cohesive run in BF, only stuff which is directly related to Flux or scrapped stuff due to the production will be considered here.
For companion adventures, probably only Peri and The Piscon Paradox will be included as it ties back to 6th. Other companions like River, Leela, Missy while I’m interested in, will be put on hold until I complete the central runs.
For other relevant companions in BF such as Flip and Constance, I chose Evelyn because of the arc’s ties to Hex but also how she was the first one designed for it all if I’m not mistaken. And the Liv Chenka stuff will not be included beyond Molly Sullivan due to the necessity to streamline.
Time War, War Master stuff may be included in the future but as I’d like to limit myself so that I don’t go broke for now, will be excluded.

-michelle helping this little boy is a great foil to her introduction and i love it a lot, BUT overall i can’t find a way to care about this whole plot with Iris missing. Probably because i know it doesn’t go anywhere after this season except for the start of season 4…. I really wonder how different everything would have been had liv stayed and plot lines not adjusted accordingly. -“what the pissed off look on my fave aint enough proof” judd you teddy bear you know its not lmfao
-“he doesn’t know i’m sick” YOU NEED TO TELL HIMMMMMM
-my extended family cooks a pig just like this in a pit and everything and it tastes soooooo good

-owen embracing this guy’s fantasy about the overlords but not being able to wrap his own head around his health’s reality is heartbreaking… at least he’s forced to address it once TK finds the meds
-owen and judd riding horses already getting that brotherly bond started ooooo i love them so much
-oh god first date time oh wow olay here we go CARLOS YOU'RE SO SMITTEN BUT NOWS NOT THE TIIIIME
-the boys miscommunicating for the first and certainly not the last time but its okay because it’s all a part of their story <3
-carlos calling this a hookup boy you know damn well that is not how you feel about this
-tk is so sad when he apologizes for the misunderstanding because the last thing he wants is to hurt anyone else but he can’t stop himself and it all just gets worse and worse in his eyes…. At least we know it gets better eventually. -grace helping judd count to 5 and she is so proud of him oh i love these two so goddamn much they are perfect and i need even more of them in season five
-does every episode of season 1 end with a song playing over a montage of stuff happening like did i just block that from my memory
-owen taking the first step to being more comfortable with his reality outside of the obvious therapy and treatments ugh so good.
god season one feels like a completely different show from the rest of it? Obviously the changes with casting and covid messed somethings up but i wonder how different everything would have been had the pandemic not happened and they were able to collow through on plot lines they wanted to from the beginning

Just caught up on the FD, and dare I say, the best-dressed event of the GP?
Holly - our sexy Aussie mermaid - what a look. Absolutely stunning. The shape of the skirt? Perfection? It moved beautifully. The only thing I'd change is that little ruffle along the back. Jason, though. If this isn't a Shape of Water program, then why in the hell is he dressed like the Amphibian Man? Why the bolero with the awkwardly placed fins? Pretty boy done dirty. He is a Canadian novice champion, a title that famously not even VM have, so he deserves better. If he just had a dramatic shirt with flowing ruffles reminiscent of her skirt, it would've been stunning. Possibly the best program they've ever had, none of that Chaka Khan nonsense.
Hannah and Ye - perfection. Exquisite tailoring, fabulous colors and fabric, really accentuating their best features, like her gorgeous back. Stunning performance, I was completely carried away. Underscored.
I actually like Katerina's dress, it had a sense of drama, the skirt drapes and moves beautifully, maybe just the front could be a bit lower. She has the Bradie problem where she pulls her hair back too tight. The hair piece, if they're already going to use one, should've been lower on the forehead. I'm sure Oksana is delighted at the reference. His costume is barely even there, he needs to be in a lighter shirt, he completely disappears. The confusion here is why a brother and sister duo are doing Swan Lake. Like, what is the story they're telling? Big, dramatic music suits them but the choreo is just not ready for the big leagues.
The Browns again with perfunctory costumes and god-awful music. All I could think about was that moment in Clueless to this song, so I don't know why they'd give a sibling team a tune from a movie where step-siblings get together. It bothered me that the blue on her dress and his shirt didn't match. She's definitely a Gabi fan girl, she was literally doing her facial expressions. Great skating but they need a makeover.
Olivia and guy - oh, brother. This is less Elvis than Elvis impersonator. What is this man doing skating with this queen? He's not looking at her to connect with her, but to try to keep up with whatever she's doing. Even Chris called out the lack of chemistry. Again messy on some elements and at risk of getting them invalidated if the tech panel wasn't fucking asleep. They spent almost the entirety of the program in the middle of the rink, which was really confusing? There's no actual concept to this program, they even said themselves she doesn't have a character and they don't know what story they're telling. Maybe how this huge celebrity moved a 14yo in her house, married her, and then later raped her when she told him he was leaving him? Because that's the story of Elvis, and it's been out there for decades, so why choose this? Otherwise her bodysuit is a slay and just shows what Amber's could've been if just the waist was in the proper place, I just wouldn't have bedazzled the buttocks. His outfit is fine, the jacket is too big, but I don't even care what he wore, I like to pretend he wasn't even there. Find Liv a Partner on her Level 2024! I liked her hair and nose ring, what a star.
Brb with part deux: Czech bugaloo.
I'm just going to post this and part deux, because people deserve to see these reviews! <3

Still not sure what to do with the fact that you could do a Bones crossover with nearly any show with a supernatural component and it could be considered canon compliant or at the very least probable. There are canonically ghosts on this show. They did a crossover with sleepy hollow, a show with a whole host of supernatural creatures and beings. Sleepy hollow is canonically the same universe as Bones and this still blows my mind. They took a show dealing with hard science and said "yeah, let's include the existence of ghosts demons angels monsters and immortal men for literally no reason and not have any of that significantly influence the plot. Except for ghosts. We need a ghost to help save one of our main characters. We also need guest star Cyndi Lauper to continue to be a medium for us, both for laughs and for maximum emotional devastation."

So I'm thinking about it, and the more I do, the more I become convinced that Nadja being promoted to the worldwide vampiric council is a trap. I think everything in season 3 with them being the local council was a trap too. The worldwide vampiric council wanted to know who the leader of the group was and in the end it became clear that that person was Nadja. They think she killed Nandor, Colin Robinson is dead as far as everyone knows, and that just leaves Nadja and Laszlo. His devotion to her is no secret so it makes sense that where she goes, he would follow. They arrive thinking its a promotion for Nadja and instead its death. From a meta perspective, the writers probably NEEDED Guillermo with Nadja in order to protect her and save her life from the council

It's the fact that the title sequence all season has been adult Colin Robinson and then for the episode we lose him, they put in baby Colin, with a very heavy concentration of moments between him and Laszlo

There's a large part of me that wants Laszlo to fake his death at some point in season 4 to escape the wrath of Nadja and Guillermo

I want Marwa to stay but I want her to be free from Nador and the wish changes and I want her to be his bitchy ex who is literally nice to everyone except Nandor and she lives in the attic mancave she made for herself and I want her to host regular movie nights with Nadja, The Guide, and Dolly in there. I want her to be free and happy but I also don't want her to go

JUST GOT BACK FROM TEEN TITANS GO TO THE MOVIES
Never been so thoroughly entertained by a film. I was laughing the entire goddamn time, I was SCREAMING at the screen. The humour, the music, the CAMEOS.
Was it stupid? Of course.
Do I care? Definitely not.
Will I pay real money to watch it again?
ABSOLUTELY

‘I said, put me in a corset asap’: Zawe Ashton on period dramas, pregnancy and embracing silliness
Tumblr media
After a series of harrowing roles, the former Fresh Meat star is rediscovering her ‘joyful side’, with a Bridgerton-esque romp – and a baby on the way with Tom Hiddleston
by Liv Little
It’s the day after Zawe Ashton’s 38th birthday when we speak. She’s wearing a bright red, Regency-inspired, rose-covered headdress; she’s had it on since her celebrations with friends and family the night before. “I’ve worn this all weekend. And I thought: ‘Shall I act cool and take it off for Liv? Or will she appreciate it on some level?’” she says with a laugh.
Ashton is still buzzing from the birthday love – as well as, perhaps, the early praise for her leading role in the period film drama Mr Malcolm’s List. She insists she avoids looking at reviews or engaging with what the public think, but it’s impossible to remain completely in the dark. “Obviously, you end up hearing things … That’s the thing I’m hypersensitive to, what that means for the film-makers especially,” she says earnestly.
This year marks the start of a new chapter for Ashton, both personally – she’s expecting her first child with her fiance, Tom Hiddleston – and professionally: alongside Mr Malcolm’s List, she has a villainous role in superhero blockbuster The Marvels on the horizon. Both developments will bring a level of attention she’s unused to; despite starting out in showbiz when she was just six years old (she appeared as an extra in the beloved British-Caribbean sitcom Desmond’s), Ashton has managed to avoid the chaotic life of many who find themselves in the spotlight from a young age.
Tumblr media
I ask if she deliberately keeps what is most sacred to her private. “I’m not Gwyneth Paltrow. I don’t know how to do that thing,” she says, by which she means broadcasting the most intimate parts of her life for the world to dissect. Although, let’s be real, that is already happening without Ashton’s permission: ever since she and Hiddleston were first linked in late 2019, after they starred together in the London revival of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal, the internet has been full of feverish speculation about their relationship.
Still, she doesn’t mean to cast shade on Paltrow. “I mean, I love the Goop of it all,” she adds, referring to Paltrow’s Netflix series Sex, Love and Goop, which takes couples on a journey of sexual and spiritual awakening. “I binged it in one night,” she says. It’s an admission you could never imagine being made by the character she’s best known for – the achingly edgy Vod from Fresh Meat, the cult TV comedy set in a Manchester student flatshare. In contrast to Vod’s take-no-prisoners attitude, Ashton is all jokes and smiles, radiating warmth.
Though Ashton closely guards her private life, during the recent press tour for Mr Malcolm’s List she was unable to hide her very visible pregnancy. “That’s the hysterical thing,” she says. “No one wants to go on a press tour at the same time that they want to keep their personal life private, but that’s my ‘contractual professional obligation’,” she says, partly serious, partly making light of the situation.
Ashton landed in New York for the film’s premiere just as news broke that Roe v Wade had been overturned. “I thought: ‘Oh God, there’s nothing more tone deaf I could be doing right now than promoting a lighthearted movie.’ I was also very aware that my presence in that promotion would be as a pregnant person.” She argues that it’s more important than ever that the different journeys of child-bearing people are acknowledged. “We’re having very important conversations about the autonomy we have over our bodies. What better autonomy could I have than just doing it how I wanted to do it?” Ashton is conscious that not everyone has had the same experience. “I have so many friends who have been through real grief, with regards to pregnancy and conception. I hope I can represent anyone on this journey, in whatever way they’re on it. Cos it doesn’t get more ancient than this,” she says jokingly, nodding to the fact that she’s having her first child in her late 30s.
Ashton grew up in east London in a tight family unit with her Ugandan mother and English father, both teachers. She started acting when she was a child and has never been short of work; as well as her breakout role in Fresh Meat, she had parts in films ranging from St Trinian’s 2 to Nocturnal Animals, and more recently appeared in the fourth season of The Handmaid’s Tale. Yet before Mr Malcolm’s List, she had never starred in a period drama.
The film, set in 19th-century Britain, follows the hilarious and often devious character of Julia Thistlewaite (Ashton), who is in her fourth season of seeking a match in high society and at very real risk of being labelled past it. Her character plots revenge against the eligible bachelor Mr Malcolm (Sopé Dìrísù) after he rejects her for failing to meet all the criteria on his list of attributes for a prospective wife. She enlists the help of her cousin Selina (Freida Pinto), with whom she hopes he will fall in love, only for her to break his heart or at least massively embarrass him. It’s a role that makes the most of Ashton’s comic timing, and it’s unsurprising that her performance has been the most talked about of the film.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t until watching Bridgerton that Ashton imagined finding a place for herself within the period genre. After falling in love with a world filled with romance, gossip and high tea, she sent her team an email saying: “‘Put me in a corset asap’ – but I didn’t think of it as on course to happening!” With the serendipity of the best romantic comedy, it wasn’t long before the call for Mr Malcolm’s List came through. The actor who had previously been cast in the lead role had dropped out, and Ashton was given just 24 hours to decide whether she wanted it. Despite being second choice, she accepted enthusiastically. “You mustn’t have any ego about this as an actor,” she says. “Film-making is intricate, it’s difficult, it’s expensive, it’s weird. And wherever you end up is wherever you end up. So I was just stoked to do it, because I had just watched Bridgerton, and I’m not going to lie, I thought: ‘The door is open!’”
That wasn’t always the case.
Ashton tells me that when she was studying acting in Manchester, teachers adopted a white-centric approach to period drama. “There was this terrible time when you had to do period pieces where the reference, or sometimes the explicit message, was that anyone of colour in the cast had to imagine themselves as white,” she recalls with dismay. “That’s actually what a director said to us as a group when we were doing a Restoration comedy. And you can imagine the comedy immediately left the bones of the seven people of colour.” Ashton, of course, is far from the first Black actor to share the traumas of being a minority within a majority-white acting class, which is why she’s now taking the time to deliver talks and connect with other students. “I’ve decided to dedicate myself to that this year,” she says.
As a self-described “creative chameleon”, it didn’t make sense to Ashton that the artistic fantasies of others didn’t stretch to seeing Black people step into worlds or characters unknown. “I couldn’t understand why the imagination I had as a reader of classic pieces was not being interpreted on screen.” She finds it absurd that it has taken almost 32 years of acting for her to be tasked with putting on a bonnet. “Sometimes there’s this undertone, like: ‘Well done for retaining enough energy to wait for this moment to happen.’ And that’s a little bit how it feels to step into period drama.”
Many of the roles Ashton played before Mr Malcolm’s List had been harrowing (with the notable exception of Fresh Meat). Earlier this year she starred as a survivor of sexual assault in Lucy Kirkwood’s urgent 25-minute BBC drama Maryland, a work filled with the collective anger of women fed up with a failing criminal justice system. In Dreams of a Life (released in 2011, the same year Fresh Meat premiered), she played the near-silent role of Joyce Carol Vincent, the north London woman whose dead body lay in front of her television for three years before anyone noticed she was gone.
The intensity of those characters’ worlds sits in stark contrast to the jubilance of Ashton’s latest part. She revelled in the chance to go light. “The process of getting into this character was like allowing myself to feel joyful, silly, tender, clumsy, goofy, soft.” These are, she suggests, states of being that Black women are often assumed not to experience. “I thought: ‘Why would anyone think that my peers and I were incapable of this joyful, tender thing?’ What’s that about?”
You’re allowed to play a fun role, I point out. “I am absolutely allowed!” she says. “I realised that for myself at some point in filming. That was a huge penny that dropped.”
She reflects on a protest she attended in east London recently, in response to the story of Child Q, the 15-year‑old schoolgirl who was strip-searched by police officers in 2020 after school staff falsely accused her of having marijuana in her possession. Child Q was menstruating at the time. Teachers and officers didn’t contact her parents before she was searched, and no other adults were present. As Ashton speaks, it is evident just how much the abuse experienced by Child Q disturbed her. ‘‘I went to the protest with a placard bearing a slogan that the writer Bonnie Greer had given me. She was like: ‘Why are people trying to take tenderness from young Black children?’ And I thought that was such a poetic way of putting it. So instead of something very boldly antagonistic, which is where your mind goes when you write a placard for any type of protest, I wrote: ‘Stop killing young Black children’s dreams’. Then I scrubbed that out, and put: ‘Let Black children dream’.”
Ashton might be starring in period dramas and Marvel movies these days, but not long ago she was on the verge of giving up acting altogether; she was worried about being typecast after five years of starring in Fresh Meat. “There are strange things that happen when you leave episodic television, and I think this applies in the UK and the US. There’s a really weird chunk of time where everyone wants you to do the same thing again.” She points to the example of Friends. “Look at the stalling Joey spin-off. Look at the subsequent difficult realigning of identities that someone like Matthew Perry, who played Chandler, went through.”
She briefly moved to the Kent seaside town of Margate in 2018 to clear her head; it helped her return to the industry refreshed. After years of navigating entertainment, she had been on the verge of burning out. “I think it’s because I started young, before any pendulum swing in the industry. I’ve seen it all at this point. The stories I could tell – I mean, that’s the reason I wrote Character Breakdown,” she says, referring to the book she published in 2019, which explores the horrors of the TV and film industry through a mix of fiction and memoir. It’s both shocking and humorous, and includes imagined scenes that reflect the power plays between film-makers, actors and agents. After her brief hiatus from the industry, the role to reel her back into the world of entertainment was, fittingly, that of a gallerist in 2019’s Velvet Buzzsaw, a horror-thriller situated in the world of fine art that asks the question: who is in control – the artist or the industry?
Reflecting on the Ashton of now versus the Ashton who rose to fame in Fresh Meat (the show turned 10 last year), she is more focused on the parts of herself that stayed the same rather than the elements that have changed. “I’m still someone who wants to create interesting characters,” she says. “I’m also someone who loves being part of a loving ensemble – that’s where I always feel most alive. I still love Manchester. I’m not that person any more, but I don’t really know in which ways I’m not – that’s so weird, isn’t it?”
Tumblr media
It has been intriguing for Ashton to witness the ways people have seen themselves reflected in the character of Vod. “A student said to me: ‘You are the first person of colour I saw representing any sort of flavour of non-binary or punk or queerness on television.’” She recognises the huge responsibility that comes with that status.
Part of the reason Vod has chimed with so many young people who find themselves occupying a space outside the norm is Ashton’s unwavering determination to create complicated characters over likable ones. “The show’s brilliant creators Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong wanted me to play it like Vod’s really cool. I said, early on: ‘I won’t be able to create someone cool for you, but I will be able to create someone who doesn’t give a fuck.’”
There is a widespread sense that, because there has been so little representation of marginalised perspectives within the film and TV industry, each character who does make it on to the screen must represent every minority experience, which, of course, it cannot. It’s something that has long frustrated Ashton. “Reading Toni Morrison taught me from a very early age that the personal is universal. Anyone who tries to tell you it’s not has to think about that. That’s also just the way art works. You know, it doesn’t need to be liked all the time. This is what I can’t bear! I don’t care.”
Someone who instilled this mantra within Ashton is the groundbreaking Black artist Lorraine O’Grady. During a series of documentaries she recorded with the artist ahead of the Tate exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power in 2017, Ashton learned that O’Grady had been shunned by some of the Black artist networks in New York because her work extended beyond the concerns of Black struggle. Yet, at 87, O’Grady continues to create the art she wants to see. “Is she someone who goes to bed at night feeling a bit sad that she was outcast by certain communities? Yes. Has she let it take her away from her gut and her heart, and her own experience? No, she has not.”
Tumblr media
Having taken inspiration from O’Grady, how have Ashton’s own personal struggles affected her professional life? “They say the same things you struggle with as a person are the same things you struggle with as an actor,” she says. “There was a point when I couldn’t cry on cue. I was like, ‘God I’m just a crap actor, everyone else seems to be able to act loads of stuff, and it’s just me.’ And, actually, it was me. I had a lot of unprocessed sadness and trauma that wasn’t ready to come out in my own life, let alone when someone snapped their fingers and said to cry on behalf of someone else.”
What eventually allowed Ashton to process her own trauma was her writing. In 2019, she wrote a play called For All the Women Who Thought They Were Mad, exploring how workplace dynamics affect Black women. “There is an instant feeling of writing from places that need releasing, writing about something that was traumatising me. So I’m changing the world and changing myself at the same time, and that’s still how I write now.”
And when Ashton isn’t making sense of the world’s traumas, past, present and future, what does she do for fun? She really has to think about this one, not because there isn’t joy in her life – it’s full of it – but because her life’s enjoyments are in many ways tied up in her work. “I feel attacked,” she says through a giggle, as I list some possible activities that she could do for fun outside of the classic film club she joined during lockdown, or the books she reads (she hosted last year’s Women’s prize for fiction podcast).
“I want to get back to the sea,” she says. “It changed my whole headspace. And I should take up gardening.” A day later, she sends me a follow-up email, concerned I might think she’s forgotten how to have fun. “I gave the most post-Covid answer to my free-time question. Forgetting that I love art galleries, live music, yoga and pilates, acupuncture and painting. Sometimes I’m still operating from a place of captivity!”
It’s time for Ashton to go. Hobbies or not, she has plenty on the horizon: she is a woman on the verge of everything from Marvel to motherhood. But, amid the upheaval, she appears to have found a new equilibrium. “I think over the past five years I’ve realised that the only way to do anything in this industry is to be anchored in myself,” she says. “As long as I have that, everything else will fall into place.”
Mr Malcolm’s List is released in the UK on 26 August and is out now in the US.

The azoffs have invested in dwb, 100%. just like pleasing (which by now you can see who's actually owner of it :) and keep promoting like their life is depending on) just like many businesses, they couldn't predict what was going to happened ( like people get tired of the shitshow & big liv lies got exposed left and right & cinema barely sold out & the movie itself being a joke and gotten bad reviews) etc
Well they should've ended the stunt (or not stunt at all) when they had the chance. I know it's also because of her shit directing but the stunt is the main reason why A LOT of people have been turned off from wanting to watch the film. Especially his own fans. SO MANY people were actually excited to watch the film (I know I was) but because of the stunt and them clowning around in every single city they were at it turned people away. I mean we all did tell them over and over again to end the stunt or people will lose interest in the film but they didn't. We warned them so many times. Even an anon who was a shipper came onto PR blogs and said that if they continued the stunt up until the movie release no one will want to watch the film in the cinema. But look what's happened. Only now (a few weeks before the film release) did they decide to end it. But they didn't end it because they wanted to end it, they only ended it because they finally realised how damaging being associated to that shit person can be for Harry's image and even career because to them none of the problematic things she has done and said before were serious enough and even the way she was behaving wasn't that bad in their eyes. I mean she only made racist and homophobic comments in the past that's nothing right? 🙄 note the sarcasm. But they just continued to dig bigger holes for themselves and are now facing the consequences of their actions which they deserve. I'm happy watching Harry, Olivia and Jeff do the most to promote the cursed film when it was mainly their fault as to why 90% of the fandom and even the GP lost interest and don't want to watch it anymore. Like I said they should've ended the stunt sooner rather than let it go on for this long. But of course who are we and what do we know right? They obviously know way better than we do 🙄
