So my dad had a stroke about three years ago while he was recovering from heart surgery (and when they also discovered he has an aneurysm in his heart that he has to be very careful not to rupture). Ever since his stroke, he's been very slow on the uptake and a lot more gullible than he was in the 60+ years before that.

For instance, he has been scammed 5 times in 3 years when he had never fallen for one before then. I bring this up because he got scammed the 5th time earlier today, and it was the 2nd time he fell for THE.SAME.SCAM.TACTIC.

That would be bad enough, but even worse is that this particular time the scammer actually succeeded in getting all the information needed to hack my parents' bank account. (The previous times, either my brother, my mom, or I was there to show him he was being scammed before he gave too much info away. But my brother doesn't live with my parents, the nature of my job means that if I'm working I'm also out of town, and my mom was out running errands.) Now, despite the fact that my brother and I are both in our late 30s, our bank accounts are still linked to our parents. Originally, this was because they were set up when we went to college, but we kept that setup in case either our parents needed funds really quickly or if we, the kids, did. It was an easy way to take care of each other, and gave us all easy access to it.

But that also means that when Dad gave the scammer the keys to the kingdom, he gave the scammer all of our keys.

My mom called me this afternoon, while I'm out of town for work (and am scheduled to be until after the New Year), and told me that all my funds are GONE. In order to keep what little we have left safe, we have to delete our bank accounts and set up new ones, but unlike my parents and brother, I don't have outside credit cards to fund myself until the Feds investigate and the bank restores our money to us. I have one credit card and it is THROUGH MY BANK.

Merry fucking Christmas, I guess.

Between having major surgery while having no medical insurance, my country putting an open fascist back in office, and now this, 2024 has fucking sucked. I want to do a John Oliver and blow up a giant 2024 statue. I think it would be cathartic.

Amber Kim's move to a men's prison for a consensual sexual encounter is a crime against humanity. It's a crime against humanity that our culture tries to render unmournable, but it is nonetheless a heinous crime, and a stain upon the legacy of all the officials who abet or tolerate it.

Even when cisgender women rape other cisgender women in prison, they are not transferred to men's prisons. One does not have to believe that consensual sex in prisons is acceptable to acknowledge that this transfer is a double standard. And yet this is the treatment transgender women can expect, apparently: a brutal double standard of violence, wherein our presence in any space is that of, at best, a conditional visitor. Yet when push comes to shove, we are more impoverished, more violated, and more mistreated by our patriarchal society.

The state of Washington must reverse it's decision. If it cannot be compelled to do so, then Kim's sentence must be commuted - even if we accept that prisons can perform justice, surely we all agree that justice is never forwarded by torture; that a day served of a sentence in the form of torturing a minority is not, in fact, a day closer to any kind of justice.

The use of either solitary confinement or sexual violence against a transgender woman as a means of control is so far beyond the pale that it must be opposed under all circumstances.
