A/N: I need a mean older Wanda in my life, when is it my turn?
——————————
It was a beautiful day with a slight chill in the air as you walked down the street towards the Stark building. You had left early for work that day to get a coffee on the way there from your favorite shop, a small space on the corner of your block.
Coffee in hand, you strode to work, thinking to yourself that you couldn’t have a bad day after so many things had gone right. You’d woken up to your first alarm, gotten dressed without second guessing your outfit, and even had time to pick up a drink before heading to your office building.
Not that you had many bad days in the first place - Stark Industries was good to you. Work usually went by fast as you kept busy most days, finding peace in your daily tasks.
There was only one thing that threatened to ruin a perfectly good day at work, and that was Wanda Maximoff.
She’d worked with you since you’d started there and she’d hated you from the beginning. You never knew why nor did you question it for too long, finding that the feeling was mutual.
She was competitive and made it her goal every day to be better than you at your job. She would brush past you, ignoring your presence, while greeting your boss and then promptly find some way to one up you, making sure to jab at you subtly in the process. When others weren’t around, she wasn’t much nicer. She made snide remarks, gave backhanded compliments, and treated you more like you were an intern than her equal.
Despite her less than pleasant behavior, you tried not to let her get to you, but it was hard not to fight back sometimes.
It did bother you at times how she seemed to look down on you. You wondered what you ever could have done to make her dislike you so much. If things were different, you thought you might actually like her or want to be her friend, or at the very least her acquaintance. The first time you saw her, you were taken aback - she was admittedly a very gorgeous woman, which was even more frustrating.
Today was going to be a good day though, you told yourself. You had a cup of your favorite coffee, a song you loved playing in your headphones, and a meeting with your boss that day discussing your recent work, which you knew you’d done flawlessly.
Today was going to be a good day. Was.
What you hadn’t anticipated when you entered the Stark building, swiping your keycard to get to the elevator and going up to the 21st floor, was to see your boss at the front desk, waiting for you with the one and only Wanda Maximoff stood beside him.
She wore a maroon blouse with a fitted black skirt, the color of her shirt making her green eyes stand out, and if she was literally anyone else you would’ve complimented her style. That was another thing about her that was infuriating - she always looked good.
Your boss, Mr. Stark, laughed at something Wanda said before he noticed you and waved you over.
“Y/N, you’re prepared for our meeting today, yes?” Mr. Stark greeted, smiling.
“Yes,” you replied, nodding.
“Perfect, I expect nothing less from you,” he started. “Also, Wanda will be joining us today. I have something very important to talk to the two of you about, regarding our deal with the Osborn group.”
You tried not to let your face fall, forcing a smile and glancing at Wanda, who seemed to be pleased that she was crashing your personal meeting with the boss. You’d wanted the one on one time with him as you’d been itching to bring up a possible promotion ever since one of your staff members resigned. Your numbers had been impressive lately and you were sure he would at least consider it.
Now, unfortunately, Wanda would be part of your meeting and knowing her, she’d probably laugh in your face if she found out you were interested in moving up.
“Sounds good,” you responded as normally as you could, feeling slightly nervous for what was to come.
“See you both at 11,” Stark said, making his exit and leaving the two of you standing by the front desk.
There was a bit of an awkward silence before Wanda spoke. “You don’t seem too excited about me being at the meeting later. Do you not like me?” The redhead teased, fake pouting. “Or did you just want some alone time with Stark? I wouldn’t put it past you to whore yourself out to the boss for a promotion.”
You rolled your eyes. “Not all of us are like you, Wanda,” you replied, trying to get under her skin, despite not actually believing that she was that kind of person. It even slightly offended you that she thought you might be, especially considering you weren’t into men to begin with. “See you at the meeting.”
You walked past her to your office, setting your things down on the desk and running a hand through your hair. It was going to be a long day.
By the time the meeting came around, you’d finished your coffee and gotten some work done to kickstart your day, trying to keep your mind busy after your encounter with Wanda earlier.
You stopped by the break room for a water on your way to the meeting and arrived to the conference room a few minutes early, taking a seat next to the head of the table where Mr. Stark would sit.
The door to the conference room opened slowly and Wanda walked in, taking the seat across from you with a disapproving look on her face.
“You should really invest in some new clothes if you want to impress Stark. Yours look like they came from Goodwill,” she remarked, making a point to look you up and down where you sat. You ignored the way your body heated up at the action.
“At least I don’t dress like I want the boss to bend me over,” you shot back, not missing a beat.
“Oh, do you think about me bent over a lot?” she asked, smirking.
Now all you could think about was what Wanda might look like in such a position and you hoped she couldn’t tell you were blushing.
Before you could come up with something to say back, Stark walked into the room, adjusting the collar of his suit jacket with one hand, the other carrying a set of documents. You and Wanda both sat up straighter and greeted him simultaneously, almost as if you were competing to see who could say something to the man first.
“Glad you’re both on time, we have a lot to cover today,” Stark announced before taking a seat at the head of the table. “Firstly, Y/N, I know this was supposed to be something of a performance review for you. We can reschedule that for a later date. Today’s topic actually involves both of you, which is why I asked Wanda to sit in.”
You felt your stomach turn at the possibilities of what that meant. Maybe he had a project the two of you would have to work together on, or maybe he had finally caught on to your disdain for each other and you were both in trouble for being unprofessional.
Before you could overthink too much, he spoke again. “As you both know, we’re currently in talks of a merger with the Osborn group. They want to give us a percentage of their company in exchange for a shared client base.”
You and Wanda both nodded in acknowledgment, listening intently.
“However, Osborn is a family business that runs on certain values. Mr. Osborn has agreed to the merger under two conditions, the first one being that the CEO of our company be married, which I am. The second condition is that I hire two people to take on the merging process, which means extra work, but extra pay as well.”
He cleared his throat before continuing. “Now, the two of you are my best employees. I want to bring you both in to help with the merger.”
There it was - you were getting promoted, but you’d have to work alongside Wanda, who was also getting promoted. You tried not to show your mixed emotions, excitement at the prospect of moving up in the company, paired with the stress and slight disgust of having to work with Wanda.
Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad - maybe you wouldn’t have to work too closely with her.
“Here’s the catch,” Stark said, pausing for a moment to collect his thoughts. “Osborn wants a couple to take on the project. I want the two of you to do it, seeing as you’re the best in the company at what you do. It is a promotion, but if you want it, then the two of you have to pretend to be together for appearances.”
Your jaw dropped. You were finally getting the promotion you’d wanted for so long, but there was in fact a catch, a massive one at that. You had to pretend to be dating your work rival - some might even call her your worst enemy - for however long the merger would take.
“What are your thoughts?” Stark asked, looking between the two of you.
Wanda had an unreadable expression on her face. You couldn’t tell if she was pleased with the promotion or absolutely pissed at the thought of fake dating you. The fact that you couldn’t read her when you wanted to was almost as frustrating as the bomb Stark had just dropped on you both.
“I think we can make it work,” she spoke first, putting on a friendly face for show. “Y/N and I are both adults here and we would be silly to turn down such an offer.”
You swallowed, nodding your agreement. “Exactly,” you said, your voice almost cracking. “I’m sure Wanda and I can find some common ground.” As you spoke, you looked her directly in the eyes, as if your stare alone could convey that you could see right through her act and that you were only playing along too for the money.
“Perfect!” Stark’s voice broke through the tension and you looked away from Wanda to give him your full attention. “We’ll need to go over what’s required of you both for the position you’ll be taking. Not just the work aspect, but the relationship aspect as well. Osborn will have his own employees and clients here often and you’ll need to keep up the relationship act at all times.”
Stark opened the folder in front of him to pull out two contracts, one for you and one for Wanda.
“The second you’re here every morning, the two of you are together. I’ll also be paying for you to go on at least two dates a week outside of work. I know this is a place of business, but the more PDA the better. Today is for getting your stories straight, I want both of you to work together for the rest of the work day to come up with a believable foundation for your relationship and get to know each other better. I’ll take care of your individual workloads for the next two days as well, so you can focus on each other and we can get through all the paperwork. I hate to ask you to do all of this, but I trust the two of you can handle it.”
As Stark began to go over some paperwork with you, explaining each page before having you sign, your thoughts were everywhere but on the dotted line. Two dates a week? PDA? You weren’t sure you would survive faking a relationship with Wanda.
You hated to admit it, but the thought of kissing her had crossed your mind before, usually accompanied by enough disgust that you could ignore the butterflies it caused.
Wanda was beautiful - anyone with eyes could see that - and she was absolutely your type, but her personality always squashed any thoughts you might’ve had about wanting her.
Now, it was all too real. You would have to pretend to like her despite the torment she put you through since your first day at the company. You’d have to put aside your rivalry for the sake of your promotion and act like she wasn’t the bane of your existence most days.
You would have to kiss her.
Your mind was stuck on that and you couldn’t figure out why. Maybe it was fear, maybe it was something more, but whatever it was had your head spinning.
Your thoughts raced as you finished the paperwork with Stark and Wanda, who seemed far too calm and collected the entire time.
When the meeting was over and Stark had left, you ignored a snarky comment from Wanda and exited the conference room with haste. You walked back to your office, finally letting out a breath you didn’t know you were holding as soon as the door was closed.
The merger would begin in two days and you had no idea how long it would take or how long you’d have to “date” Wanda. Two days of normalcy didn’t feel like enough time to prepare, but you knew what you had to do. You were getting promoted, and Stark trusted you with one of the most important collaborations to ever happen within his company. You decided you would just have to focus on that to get through what was to come. Everything would be okay.
Two days went by fast, faster than you expected, and it was time to put on a show. You and Wanda had used those two days to prepare, coming up with a story of how you got together and learning more about each other to make your relationship more believable.
Of course, Wanda never missed an opportunity to insult you or tease you during those two days and you wondered if she’d be able to hold back when it was time to pretend.
It was easy enough to come up with a story. You met each other at work and fell in love over time. One night of working late turned into a first kiss and a date that would soon follow.
You’d learned a lot about Wanda as well. She lived close to work at an apartment complex similar to yours but slightly more luxurious. She walked to work some days and loved to stop for a croissant on her way when she had time. She had a brother named Pietro, who lived about an hour away. She was born in Sokovia and grew up there with Pietro before moving to the States to pursue better opportunities, which explained why she sometimes sounded like she had an accent.
She found out a lot about you as well and you weren’t sure if that made you uncomfortable for good reasons or bad reasons. It felt both exciting and also nerve-wracking to share parts of your life with someone you spent so much time hating.
You found yourself hating her a little less as you learned more about her. She was a very interesting person and you wondered what it would be like to know her as someone who she didn’t make it her life’s mission to annoy every day. You wondered if she was feeling the same way as she got to know you too.
Whether or not she was, today was the day where you’d both have to put your rivalry aside and pretend to love each other.
You stopped for a coffee on your way to work, knowing you would definitely need one, and walked purposefully to the Stark building. You arrived ten minutes early, hoping you would have some time to sip your coffee and take some deep breaths.
As you swiped your keycard and boarded the elevator, a familiar voice called out.
“Hold it, please!” Wanda said, running up to the elevator with an outstretched hand, heels clicking against the tile.
You put an arm out to keep the door from closing and let her in. “I should’ve let it close,” you said teasingly.
“I don’t know if you’ve forgotten sweetheart, but we have to be nice to each other now. Think you can handle that?” she responded somewhat condescendingly.
“I can handle it, can you?” you asked, looking over at her as you spoke.
“You underestimate me, detka.” That was new, she’d never called you that nor had you ever heard the word before, but it sounded lovely the way she said it.
Neither of you spoke again as the elevator finished its journey up. The doors opened and the two of you stepped out into the office area where Mr. Stark was waiting for you, accompanied by a man you’d only ever seen in pictures.
Wanda moved closer to you, placing a hand on your lower back as you approached and you were glad she didn’t notice your slight shiver at the touch.
“Good morning ladies,” Stark greeted. “As you probably already know, this is Mr. Osborn.”
“It’s nice to meet you,” you said, shaking Osborn’s hand.
Wanda did the same after you, only removing her hand from your back to shake Osborn’s properly.
“Y/N and Wanda here are going to be taking on the merger, the paperwork is already done and they’ve been briefed on what’s expected of them,” Stark announced, gesturing to the two of you standing there closely.
“Ah, so you’re the lovely couple I’ve heard so much about.” Osborn smiled warmly as he spoke.
“Yes, and we’re so excited to work with you,” Wanda replied, subtly taking your hand in hers and interlacing your fingers.
You knew it was all for show, but it felt weirdly nice to hold her hand and you internally cursed yourself for thinking such a thing. But you couldn’t help it when her hand was so warm and soft and her thumb stroked the back of your hand idly as she conversed with your boss and his business partner.
After a few minutes of talking, Stark excused himself to take a business call and Osborn turned fully towards you and Wanda.
“Thank you for taking on such a big role in the company,” he started. “I look forward to seeing more of the both of you.”
“We can say the same, sir,” you said sweetly, leaning into Wanda a bit to help the act.
He smiled again and with that, he stepped away, walking off towards one of the offices he would be using during his time there.
You knew he had other employees around the office so you couldn’t drop the act for even a second, whether Osborn himself was looking or not, so you fought the urge to pull away.
“Nice touch leaning into me,” Wanda mumbled, so that only you could hear.
“Was that… a compliment?” You asked quietly, unable to resist the urge to tease her.
“I would say don’t get used to it, but neither of us have a choice anymore.” Wanda turned towards you, brushing a strand of hair behind your ear. “I’ll see you later.”
She pulled away to go to her office and start her day and you did the same, knowing you needed some time to yourself after your first little performance with Wanda. You almost thought it was going to be a long day, but then you remembered this was going to be your every day for a while.
The charade continued as the day went on and you worked more closely with Wanda on the merger, going over paperwork and calling clients together. Osborn’s employees would come in and out of the conference room to discuss things with the two of you, so you had to endure more loving touches and heartwarming compliments from the redhead.
At one point, Stark and Osborn had a conversation in the hallway outside the conference room, which of course had glass walls, making it hard to catch a break from faking your relationship.
You were reviewing a document with Wanda beside you when she spoke.
“Can you sign this one for me?” She handed you a form and a pen.
“What, no ‘please?’” You joked.
“No, I don’t think I need to ask, you’ll just do it if I tell you to,” she remarked back, catching you slightly off guard.
When you took the pen from her, your fingers touched and you knew Wanda did it on purpose. You looked over at her, feeling small under her intense stare, before signing the form and sliding it back to her.
“Thank you,” she said softly, sounding slightly distracted, causing you to look at her again.
When you did, her eyes weren’t on yours.
“Osborn has wandering eyes,” she muttered under her breath, her gaze on your lips, and before you could respond she was kissing you softly.
Her lips against yours felt incredible, you couldn’t even lie to yourself. Butterflies erupted in your stomach and in that moment, you never wanted to detach from her. You would work through why that was later, right now all you could think about was her.
You kissed her back, lips moving together in tandem, fitted so perfectly against each other it created even more conflicting feelings within you.
It didn’t last nearly as long as you wished it did, wondering why on earth you were hoping for more when it was Wanda you were kissing.
After a few seconds, she pulled away, leaving one last quick kiss on your lips before saying something about printing more documents and walking off.
You sat there for a moment, trying to collect yourself. As you came back to reality, you noticed Osborn looking in from outside the conference room and you were coldly reminded that Wanda only did that so he would see it. It meant nothing to her and it shouldn’t mean anything to you either.
With that, you focused back on your work, knowing in a few minutes you’d have to go over more of it with Wanda and the show would continue. You just had to keep reminding yourself that none of it was real.
From where she stood at the printer, Wanda smirked to herself at how you reacted to the kiss - she wasn’t going to let that go anytime soon. She knew she’d have time to tease you about it later, after she was done cursing herself for thinking about how soft your lips were against hers.
The rest of the day went by fairly smoothly. Stark and Osborn spent most of their time in Stark’s office, so you and Wanda had some time to cool off from the kiss earlier. That didn’t stop Wanda’s teasing touches however, because Osborn’s employees could be anywhere, and it seemed she was enjoying torturing you in a new way.
By the time you were getting ready to head home, you were beyond flustered and fairly certain you’d need to change your underwear. If Wanda wasn’t infuriating enough already, it was only made worse by the fact that she had this effect on you.
The days that followed were similar to that first day. You and Wanda continued to pretend to be a couple, with Wanda winding you up every chance she got, almost like she knew what she was doing to you.
Osborn was at the office a bit less every day, but his employees were always there getting work done even when he wasn’t around.
Therefore, the show went on. Wanda had gotten in the habit of giving you soft pecks on your lips before she would get up to go take care of work-related tasks and it was driving you insane. The short and sweet kisses were too much and yet at the same time, never enough.
You had come to the conclusion that you definitely felt something for Wanda, something other than disdain and irritation. As much as you tried to fight it, you wanted her. You convinced yourself she would never feel the same way though; with how she had always acted towards you, it seemed impossible.
Every touch, every kiss, every pet name Wanda called you - it was all an act. You had to push your feelings down as much as possible because you didn’t want her to find out and you didn’t want to get hurt. So you kept your guard up and tried your hardest to ignore how you felt, despite the fact that Wanda wasn’t making it easy for you.
You were starting to wonder if the promotion was even worth it.
Even so, you carried on, doing excellent work under Stark in your new position and working surprisingly well with Wanda, from both a business perspective and a fake dating perspective.
You had also found it in you to initiate more of the relationship acts with Wanda, if not to satisfy your own desires then to at least mess with her. Sometimes you held her hand, sometimes you moved hair out of her face, sometimes you kissed her on the cheek - every time, she seemed to like it. You figured she was just acting, as you were supposed to, but part of you hoped she wasn’t.
You loved that she sometimes seemed nervous or flustered when you made a move or teased her.
One time when she kissed you, you separated first, while she was still attempting to keep the kiss going. You decided to mess with her and said jokingly, “if you want to keep kissing me, you could just ask” with a smirk plastered on your face. She blushed and hesitated before she spoke. “In your dreams,” she remarked, before going back to work. You considered that a win.
Maybe it was worth it if you could get a reaction out of her too.
It had been a week since the act started and tonight was date night. Starting tonight, you’d have to go on two dates with Wanda every week. Stark gave you a company card to put all of your expenses on for the night, telling you to take Wanda to a nice restaurant he recommended and enjoy dinner with her.
You were nervous to be alone with her outside of work, but you were also looking forward to it.
The restaurant was a block away from the Osborn building, which is why Stark had picked it out for your date. You’d have to keep up appearances while you were out with Wanda, but you didn’t mind. Part of you was excited to at least feel like you were taking her on a proper date. You wondered more than anything how she was feeling about it too.
At the end of the work day, you left the Stark building and walked home to get ready for your date. You decided to wear slacks and a black dress shirt, wanting to feel confident while also not giving Wanda the satisfaction of seeing you in a dress. You straightened your hair and touched up your makeup, hating the idea that you wanted so badly to impress Wanda.
Slipping into a pair of high heels, you finished getting ready just in time for a car to pull up in front of your apartment building, courtesy of Mr. Stark.
The ride to the restaurant was quiet, giving you time to hype yourself up. It was just a date. It may have been just a date with your arch nemesis, but it was just a date. You’d been on dates before, you could do this. It wasn’t even a real date anyway, you told yourself, it was just another one of many performances between you and Wanda to secure your promotion at work.
When the car pulled up to the restaurant, you thanked the driver and got out, walking in to see if Wanda had already arrived.
As you spoke to the hostess about your reservation, the door opened and you were absolutely not prepared for what came next.
Wanda looked stunning; seeing her like this took your breath away. Unlike you, she had worn a dress. The black material hugged her body in all the right places, with a slit down the side, exposing her thigh.
“Close your mouth, you’ll catch flies,” Wanda said smugly as she approached, a cocky smile on her face.
“You look nice,” you managed to get out, trying to compose yourself.
“You do too for once,” she responded, smiling, the backhanded compliment not going unnoticed by you. You found that you didn’t mind.
The two of you were escorted to your table, where you pulled Wanda’s chair out for her and then sat down across from her.
“So chivalrous,” she commented, fingers tracing the menu in front of her.
“Anything for my beautiful girlfriend,” you said back mockingly.
“Aw, you think I’m beautiful?” she asked, smiling.
You rolled your eyes. “I also called you my girlfriend.”
“Yeah but you have to call me that. Didn’t have to call me beautiful,” she responded, raising an eyebrow. She had you there.
“Well, maybe I meant it,” you mumbled, trying to hide the truth behind your words and keep up the playful banter.
“You’re beautiful too, you know,” she said, looking at you intently. You blushed, unable to hold eye contact after the compliment. You muttered out a quick “thank you” and decided the menu suddenly seemed really interesting.
After ordering your food and drinks - you made sure to get something with a little alcohol in it - an awkward silence settled over the two of you.
Wanda broke the silence first, chuckling.
“What?” you asked.
“It’s just funny. I never thought I’d be here, at this fancy restaurant, having dinner with you,” Wanda replied, but there was no malice in the way she said it, only amusement.
“Cheers to that, because I never thought I’d be here either,” you said, taking a sip of your drink.
“Where did you think you’d be? What kind of future do you see for yourself?” Wanda asked genuinely. You weren’t prepared for the conversation to take such a turn but you answered anyway.
The rest of the dinner went surprisingly well; the two of you talked about your goals, your lives before working together, your hobbies, and anything else you could think of.
You learned that Wanda loved to garden and you found it ironic that a week ago you never would’ve thought she was capable of loving something enough to keep it alive.
By the end of the night, both of you were slightly tipsy and actually enjoying each other’s company. You covered the bill when it came, using the card Stark gave you, and the two of you walked outside to wait for your rides home.
You leaned against a brick wall, laughing at a joke Wanda told you, catching your breath. As you calmed down, you looked at Wanda, who still had a bright smile on her face. It was so genuine and real, you couldn’t help but stare, almost as if you were memorizing her face at that moment. You felt like you were seeing her for the first time. She was undeniably gorgeous all the time, but something about her letting her guard down and laughing with you allowed you to see her differently - she was breathtaking.
She was everything.
You didn’t realize you were staring for so long until she noticed and returned your gaze. Her eyes flickered down to your lips and you almost shivered at the motion.
Just as you were about to speak, Wanda leaned in.
You met her halfway, kissing her softly at first, getting lost in the feeling of her lips against yours. She brought her hand up behind your head, deepening the kiss and you almost moaned when you felt her tongue against your lips. Your lips parted to let her in and she kissed you with more passion than you’d ever felt in your life.
This was the longest kiss you’d shared, and by far the most intense one. You never wanted it to end, kissing her back just as eagerly, allowing your tongue to swipe against hers. Your hands came up to her cheeks, one finding its way behind her neck to play with the hairs at the nape of her neck.
The two of you stayed like that for a long moment, just feeling each other and forgetting what you were supposed to be doing.
When her tongue licked into your mouth again, you whimpered, and that seemed to break the spell.
Wanda pulled back, pupils dilated, a slight look of panic painting her perfect features. “Sorry, I- I’ll see you at work tomorrow.” As if on cue, a car pulled up, one of Stark’s drivers, and Wanda got in.
She was gone as quickly as she was on you in the first place and it took your brain a moment to catch up with what had just happened.
The kiss didn’t feel planned, it didn’t feel fake, it didn’t feel like it was for Osborn or Stark or anyone at the company. It felt real - it felt like she wanted you just as badly as you wanted her. You wanted to believe that but you couldn’t let yourself. She left in such a hurry she obviously regretted the kiss and you weren’t entirely certain she hadn’t just done it because she saw someone from work walking by.
You groaned, reality sinking back in. Another car pulled up and you knew it was your ride home. You straightened yourself out and got in the car, letting your mind run through all the possibilities on the way home.
When you arrived at work the next day, something was off.
“Hey Y/N,” Wanda greeted you at the entrance and put a hand on your shoulder, letting her thumb rub circles, but it felt wrong. It felt calculated, like she was just going through the motions. Even the tone of her voice lacked energy.
You felt like she didn’t want to be there and didn’t want to be touching you - it was as if she was suddenly making no effort to be convincing.
“Is everything okay?” you asked, concerned.
“Everything is just fine,” she said back, forcing a smile.
Before you could say anything else, she walked to her office and closed the door.
You went to your own office and looked over the documents you had to deal with for the day, before heading to Wanda’s office to work on them with her.
You knocked before poking your head in. “Conference room?”
“Sure, I’ll be there in a sec,” Wanda replied coldly, void of any emotion.
You tried to ignore the way she was acting but you couldn’t. It wasn’t her usual cruelty towards you; this was somehow worse.
A few moments after you set up in the conference room, she came in, ignoring you and getting straight to work.
All day, she handed you papers to sign and occasionally put an arm around you when an Osborn employee walked by, swiftly removing it once they were out of sight.
At one point, Stark came in and gave you both a mountain of paperwork to do with a deadline of tomorrow morning at 8am. He apologized and said you could both stay late and get overtime, then left the room to meet his own deadlines.
So now what felt like the longest day of work was actually going to be the longest day of work.
Wanda’s behavior persisted throughout the day and well into your overtime hours. Everyone had left the office so there was no one left to put on a show for and Wanda made sure you knew that.
Her overall coldness towards you was bothering you more than it should’ve and you finally said something.
“You know, this whole relationship act is supposed to be convincing.”
“No one is here now,” she retorted nonchalantly.
“You’ve been acting like this all day.”
“And I’ve been touching you all day and being sweet with you in front of the others,” she said, before looking at you. “What, do you need more? In case you’ve forgotten, this whole relationship act is exactly that - an act.”
“Don’t talk to me like that,” you said, suddenly feeling sick to your stomach. “Like I’m making this something it isn’t.”
“If the shoe fits,” Wanda replied, going back to her paperwork.
“No.” You stood up. “You don’t get to act like I’m the one blurring the lines between real and fake. You didn’t have to kiss me like that last night, but you did.”
She stood up too. “Maybe someone was watching, Y/N. What do you want me to say? That I wanted to kiss you? That I did it because you’re so irresistible I couldn’t help myself?” she snapped back callously, like she was trying to hurt you.
“I don’t care about the kiss!” You raised your voice. “I care about this promotion and I won’t let you ruin it just because you can’t handle whatever happened last night.”
“Nothing happened last night, it was a kiss. We’ve done it before. It meant nothing!” Wanda yelled back.
“Who are you trying to convince, me or yourself?” you said, holding eye contact.
With that, she shoved you against the nearest wall. “I hate you,” she said, her voice almost a whisper, before she leaned in and kissed you hard.
Unlike your other kisses with the redhead, this one didn’t start out soft. It was rough and full of emotions. It was fueled by all the feelings swirling around within the two of you that you had yet to vocalize.
You kissed her back, you couldn’t help yourself. Just moments ago she had you on the verge of tears and now here you were, kissing her back like your life depended on it.
Your hands came up to her neck and you deepened the kiss, lips moving against hers purposefully as if you were trying to prove a point.
Your tongues met and mingled, both of you gasping and moaning into each other’s mouths. You didn’t separate until you needed air.
“Just a kiss, huh?” you breathed out, your noses still touching.
“Shut up,” Wanda said back just as breathily.
“Make me,” you challenged, wanting to be difficult but also wanting her to kiss you again.
She leaned back in, lips connecting with yours, kissing you much softer this time. Her tongue met yours and it made you weak in the knees, the slowness of this kiss compared to the roughness of the first one making your head spin. You knew in that moment that you weren’t the only one feeling things.
Her hands found your waist, pinning you against the wall harder, and you moaned against her.
“You like that?” she said way too cockily, the words from her mouth managing to irritate you even when you were just enjoying that same mouth so much.
You flipped your positions, pinning her against the wall and she raised an eyebrow at you. “I like this,” you replied, kissing her again.
You let your hands wander, running up and down her sides, teasing her but not quite going anywhere in particular.
When you squeezed, she moaned into your mouth and you felt a pang of arousal at the sound. You wanted to pull more sounds like that out of her and began slowly untucking her shirt. You slid your hands underneath the fabric, feeling her soft skin beneath your fingers.
“Mmm, stop teasing,” she mumbled in between kisses, giving you permission to touch her more.
Your hands went further up her shirt, palming her breasts over her bra before sliding under. You brushed against her nipples with your thumbs and she moaned again, breaking the kiss.
You didn’t hesitate to trail kisses down her neck, then back up towards her ear, making her whimper as your hands continued to stimulate her sensitive nipples.
You were dragging it out - you wanted to take things slow in case she wanted to stop and you also wanted to tease her as much as possible, almost like you were making her pay for how she always treated you.
You continued your assault on her neck, kissing and sucking every inch of skin you could get your lips on, while she panted against you.
The beautiful sounds leaving her were only turning you on even more and you were slowly realizing that you’d wanted to do this for a while.
“Y/N,” Wanda panted out.
“Yeah?”
“Stop fucking teasing,” she demanded.
“What do you want?” you asked, running your thumbs over her nipples again to get a reaction.
She gasped, grabbing your throat with her hand. “Fuck me,” she said sternly, and how could you say no to her?
“Fuck,” you breathed out, kissing her again and removing your hands from her shirt.
You placed one of your hands on her thigh under her skirt, running it up her skin until you reached her underwear. Your fingers reached her panties, feeling a wet spot on the front of them. You moaned, your arousal skyrocketing at the thought that she was so wet for you.
“Yeah?” she said, teasing you. “Why don’t you stop feeling me up over my panties and fuck me, hm?”
You nodded and pushed her panties aside, feeling her wetness directly against your fingers. The fact that she was so turned on only served to turn you on even more. She wanted this just as much as you did.
Your index finger moved up to rub her clit, making her moan louder this time and if anyone was still in the building, they would’ve heard her.
“You like that?” You mirrored her words from earlier.
She managed to roll her eyes despite the pleasure she was feeling and leaned in to kiss you again, moaning into the kiss when you rubbed faster against her clit.
“Fuck me,” she whispered against your lips. Denying her felt like denying yourself at this point. You slid a finger into her opening, then followed up with a second finger, stretching her out.
She moaned and it was heavenly, making you want to hear her come undone for you. You started a rhythm inside her, fucking into her with purpose. The sounds leaving her lips made you throb with desire, she sounded so beautiful in the throes of pleasure.
You could hear how wet she was, sloshing sounds coming from where your fingers went to work, and it drove you crazy.
“Fuck, I can hear how wet you are,” you said, kissing down her neck again.
“You feel so good,” she panted out, moaning again as you hit a spot inside of her.
The sounds of her pussy were getting to you and you wanted to taste her so badly; you weren’t sure if you wanted her to cum like this first or if you needed your mouth on her before anything else.
“Can I taste you?” you asked, slowing your movements to both prolong her pleasure and delay her orgasm, as well as to give her a second to answer you.
“Fuck, yes,” she said, bucking her hips into your hand for more. “Wanna see you on your knees for me, detka.”
You couldn’t say no to her even if you tried, not when you wanted the same thing so desperately. You dropped to your knees, pulling her skirt up to reveal her pussy, underwear clinging to her folds and the stickiness between her thighs.
You practically drooled at the sight, pushing her panties further to the side to get a better view. You leaned in, kissing her pussy at first, then flicked your tongue against her clit, making her gasp. Her taste was heavenly and you wanted more, your tongue now exploring her eagerly.
“You taste so good, mommy,” you managed to mumble against her, the vibrations of your voice making her hips jerk against your face, which only made you more aroused. When you realized what you said, you almost stopped what you were doing. But a few simple words helped you to not falter too much.
“Call me that again,” Wanda moaned, hips bucking against you as if she was trying to get herself off on your mouth.
“Mommy,” you obeyed, unable to deny her at this point, and equally turned on by the name.
“Fuck. Such a good girl for mommy,” she breathed out, rutting her hips with purpose and grinding her clit against your tongue.
You moaned into her pussy at the praise, licking and sucking at her clit, letting your tongue dip inside her hole with every downstroke.
“Ohh, does my baby have a praise kink?” she cooed, somehow managing to make you flustered and embarrassed while you were bringing her to orgasm.
When you didn’t respond, too enamored with eating her out, she grabbed your chin harshly and made you face her.
“Answer mommy when she asks you a question,” she commanded, keeping you just inches from where you wanted to taste her again.
“Yes,” you whined, breathing heavily with how aroused you were.
“Yes what?”
“Yes mommy,” you said, looking up at her with lust in your eyes.
“Good girl,” she praised, redirecting you back to her dripping cunt, keeping her hand at the back of your head to guide your movements.
She moaned when you made contact again, your lips wrapping around her clit, sucking obediently. You wanted her to cum for you. You wanted to bring her pleasure, to get off on her sounds and her taste, but at the same time, part of you also wanted to assert some kind of dominance over her. She’d bullied you relentlessly since you started working for the same company as her and this was your way of taking back control.
She may have been in charge, with her hand at the back of your head, keeping you close so she could fuck your face the way she wanted to, but you had the power to tip her over the edge she so desperately wanted to reach.
And it was intoxicating.
But then again, everything about Wanda Maximoff was intoxicating. Her beautiful face, her hypnotizing voice, her sense of style, the sway of her hips when she walked, the quickness of her comebacks, and in the current moment, her scent, her taste, her moans, her movements against you. You had never wanted someone so badly in your life and you had her right where you wanted her.
“Fuck baby, I’m gonna cum,” Wanda said, her grip tightening on your hair. Her clit throbbed under your tongue, her hole clenching around nothing as you brought her closer and closer to the edge.
You doubled down on your efforts, wanting to see her fall apart for you. Your index finger teased her folds, dipping into her hole as you sucked on her clit. When you pushed two fingers into her while continuing your stimulation on her hardened bud, she came, moaning your name so prettily as her cum coated your fingers and chin.
You lapped up as much as you could before she began to push you away and pull you back up. She kissed you, tasting herself on your tongue, a deep sound from the back of her throat emerging at the sensation.
“Maybe you can be a good girl after all, hm?” She mused, looking at you lazily as she pulled away from the kiss.
Her hand came down, reaching into your pants and then your panties to feel where you were turned on beyond belief.
“When have I not been one?” you questioned.
“Maybe when you’re talking back to me,” she said, biting her lip.
“I can think of something better I could be doing with my mouth,” you shot back.
Wanda moved her hand so she could really feel you against her, running her fingers up and down your slit.
“God, you’re so wet for me,” Wanda said. “Did I do that?” She asked, continuing to touch you.
You nodded, somewhat distracted as you admired the way she looked in her post-orgasm haze. You wanted her again - one time wasn’t enough.
“Can you go again?” you blurted out, staring at her with such want it almost surprised her. “Please,” you begged, stroking her cheek with your thumb as you looked into her eyes.
“What about you?” She asked.
“Just wanna make you cum again mommy,” you responded, practically pleading.
She couldn’t say no to you at that moment, and she didn’t want to either. “Okay detka, go ahead, make mommy feel good,” she said, her teeth coming down onto her lip as you descended once more.
Sliding her panties off, you brought your mouth down to where she was dripping and slid your tongue as deep as it would go, your thumb coming up to rub circles into her clit.
“Yes, that’s so good,” Wanda cried out, bucking her hips as you fucked into her with your tongue. “Fuck, eat my pussy just like that,” she said, making you moan against her.
After a few moments, she came again, and you licked at her folds until she rode out the aftershocks, twitching against your face. You couldn’t get enough, mouthing at her pussy for as long as you could before she brought you back up once more, staring at you so intimately it made you nervous despite the fact that you’d just done extremely unprofessional things to her in the conference room.
“So, a praise kink and a mommy kink, huh?” She chuckled, raising an eyebrow and smirking.
“Shut up.” You blushed, trying to hide your face in her neck out of embarrassment.
“Make me,” she said, using your own words from earlier against you.
You kissed her to shut her up, and also because you just wanted to. She could taste herself on your lips and on your tongue and it almost made her want to go again. The two of you stayed like that, lips glued to each other, for a long moment before separating, out of breath.
“So was this pretend too or?” You half joked, knowing it wasn’t but also unsure if she would ice you out again after this.
“No,” she started. “This did mean something, despite what I said earlier. I don’t sleep around just to sleep around,” she said earnestly. “I want you.”
You were somewhat surprised she didn’t come back with some snarky remark or crude joke, but you weren’t going to complain when the woman you wanted more than anything was confessing that she felt the same way.
“I want you too,” you uttered, looking down at her lips subconsciously.
“I kinda figured that out when you were getting on your knees for me, sweetheart,” she responded.
“Whatever.” You rolled your eyes, leaning in to kiss her again.
When the two of you broke apart, you spoke again. “So what now?”
“What do you mean?”
“We still have to pretend to date. Can we do that?” you asked.
“We could pretend,” she started. “Or we could just do it.”
“What, date?”
“Yeah, why not?” she questioned, seeming slightly nervous as she proposed the idea.
“I thought you hated me,” you whispered, suddenly feeling very vulnerable. “All this time…”
“I don’t hate you,” Wanda cut in. “I don’t know, it’s complicated.”
You raised an eyebrow.
“I guess I just saw myself in you. Someone determined, ambitious, competitive, like a younger version of me. So of course, you were my competition. And I also saw something I wanted but couldn’t have, or so I thought. I never thought you’d want me too. I don’t know, I can’t justify how I treated you, I’m sorry.”
You paused, taking a moment to think everything over before speaking again.
“Look, I don’t know what I want out of this, but I’m willing to see where it goes,” you finally said, hoping she was on the same page.
“I’m okay with that.” She smiled, perhaps out of relief, and brushed some hair out of your face. “Let’s fake it till we make it, yeah?” She joked, making you smile back at her.
“Works for me,” you said, looking at her with an unreadable expression, one which you might later realize was pure devotion. Despite everything you’d been through with her, you were falling fast and there was no way to stop it.
The following week was something of a dream come true. You and Wanda worked together, but this time the only tension present was sexual. You acted like a couple and you didn’t even have to try anymore, it just came naturally.
Wanda’s teasing touches increased tenfold, with her constantly trying to turn you on in the most inappropriate of places, whether it was in Stark’s office with her hand tracing patterns on the small of your back or in the conference room with dirty words whispered in your ear and while everyone was still in the building.
The two of you stayed late a few nights to finish up paperwork, finding that it was hard to get any work done when you were left alone with each other.
You’d made Wanda cum against the conference table more than once and she’d even come home with you one night to continue your activities. You fucked her with your fingers against your front door and again in your bed with your strap, making her see stars every time you had your way with her. It was very quickly becoming one of your favorite ways to relieve stress, especially with the merger increasing your workload.
Mr. Stark was pleased with your “performance,” pulling you aside to tell you that Osborn absolutely adored the two of you and your relationship. You figured once there was a label on things, you’d break it to him that you were actually together now.
You and Wanda had not only been having regular sex, but had been talking about deeper things with each other, including your own history. She opened up about her insecurities and you did the same, kissing each other softly after and then snuggling up to watch a movie.
Wanda stayed over some nights and the following mornings you’d walk to work together, stopping at your favorite coffee shop for a warm drink on the way.
The two dates a week had originally felt like a burden, but now you were grateful for the chance to take your favorite girl on a date twice a week, all expenses paid by the boss. You didn’t care that Osborn employees might be lurking around, you touched Wanda when you wanted to and it had nothing to do with appearances.
Months passed, and the merger was finally coming to a close. Half of Stark Industries’ client base had become regular customers of the Osborn group, and Stark now owned a percentage of Osborn’s company.
You and Wanda maintained your higher positions, still working directly under Stark with a nice pay raise.
You’d asked Wanda to be your official girlfriend a few weeks after your first time sleeping together and she moved in with you two months later.
Stark was surprised to find out the two of you were no longer faking it, but he was happy for you and started calling himself the millionaire matchmaker.
Sometimes the two of you still fought, your snarky and sarcastic personalities unable to be pushed down so easily, but it usually ended with Wanda bent over a surface of the apartment or workplace after hours, with your fingers or your tongue inside her pussy.
If you really pushed her buttons, it ended with your hands tied to the headboard while Wanda touched herself above you and mocked your desperation to be the one giving her pleasure; “bad girls don’t get to touch mommy, so just sit there and look pretty for me,” she would say.
The teasing and the jokes were a huge foundation for your relationship so long as they weren’t taken too far, and you found that you loved that part of her despite how it used to be used against you.
Wanda could be incredibly sweet though and you loved that about her too. She knew when to pick playful fights with you and when to be softer; she knew how to act when you needed reassurance from her and she knew how to make you feel safe.
At the end of the day, you fell hard for the one person you never should’ve fallen for, and you wouldn’t change a thing.

Azul would probably have such a hard time walking in heels at least at first tho since he’s from the sea and he’s already constantly complaining about how hard it is for him to fly, and even in the stitches event my boi still can’t surf lol. Also yes Azul is such a boyfaure. I feel like the list of boyfailures in this series goes to Deuce, Idia, Azul, and like maaaaybeee Malleus and/or Sebek, and maaaaybeeer Kalim. Also though on the note of wearing heels I cannot judge at all. Like one time I had to wear not even heels but more of a wedge but they still feel like heels to me even though others (cough my mom who made me wear them) would beg to differ lol. And I had to wear them while standing for like an hour and when I tell u that starts to make your feet hurt like crazy. I can’t I can’t it’s painful. And that was just wedges I don’t understand how some of the characters in the game are wearing the highest heels known to man kind all day everyday like it’s nothing. Like Vil and Riddle pls calm tf down I beg you please wear slippers for once in your lives I beg you, you’re gonna break your toes! There is at the very least Riddle’s Halloween vignette where him and Vil talk about how back in Riddle’s first year he was in pain from the heels and Vil offered him a bandaid and then Riddle showed back up to replace it lol and Vil was like wow that boi is gonna crash and burn. And it’s like excuse me, sir? You’re right don’t get me wrong, but have you looked in the mirror recently?! I actually think it’s really interesting to think about how Riddle and Vil are actually really similar characters who had similar values enforced into them, but by different people. However, Vil is much better at masking his rage and appearing professional at all times and thus from the beginning most of his dorm has a deep respect for him. While on the other hand, Riddle’s emotional regulation skills are in the fiery pits of hell and he cannot manage his temper and looses it on the daily. So his dormates at the beginning have less respect for him and view him more so as an immature kid than a proper leader. But as he grows as a person and goes through his character arc throughout the story you can see his dormates, even Ace beginning to respect him, and I think that’s really great. Vil on the other hand completely shatters his pitch perfect image with his overblot and he has to accept that now the SDC participants know that he isn’t always as cool as he puts on, but that’s also good for him since while it would be bad to become the same way arc one Riddle was, Vil does seem to feel more comfortable with expressing his feeling around Rook and Epel as opposed to always maintaining his image as the cool campus celebrity who always looks perfect, although he certainly still does his fair share of that. It’s nice to see the gradual change in characters over the course of the game, no one does a complete personality shift post overblot. Although I still would love to see a bit more noticeable character development from some of these guys. Although it’s also fun to pick things apart by reading in between the lines.
Yeah as much as I love the goofy vingettes, like wouldn’t it be wild if they dropped a super serious one and it turned out to be like Jack’s or something.
Omg Ruggie needs to have an event that’s like where’s Waldo but it’s where’s Mr. Bucchi. The guy straight up pulled the left to get milk moves. At the very least tho I neeeeeed a canon Ruggie’s grandma design and I need to see what she’s like. Epel’s Meemaw was already such an icon, I need them to meet each other. Omg could you imagine Ruggie’s grandma and Epel’s Meemaw hitting it off and becoming besties. I could see that tbh. I mean while yes Ruggie’s financial situation in his town is much worse than Epel’s, they still do both come from small and lesser known areas and I feel like they could totally bond over that. They’d have cooky old lady chats. In a similar boat I know that Maleanor isn’t even alive but like I need her and Georgina to meet, and no it’s not just because I’m a simp, but daaaamn, but that’s not the only reason why okay. Like I just think they could have cool chats about being evil looking mothers and running very totally not whatsoever kingdoms/ the actual fish mafia
DJ RIDDLE DJ RIDDLE DJ RIDDLE
What I need to know tho is who Neigie’s number one fan is. Like Rook is the number two fan, which implies that there must be one person who is an even bigger fan. I asked my friend what he thought and he said maybe it was Vil out of spite to spy on him or something. Idk, it could also be Neige himself, self love lets go king, or it could be one of the dwarves, idk, but I’m so so so so curious. It would be rlly funny if we actually got some kind of plot twist reveal about it later lol.
You should watch inside job it’s pretty funny. Also Alex Hirsch creator of gravity falls and voice actor of Hooty and King from the owl house worked on it and you can very much tell through the style of comedy sooooo
Guys, I need to know who the housewarden before Riddle was. Like what freak of nature was so off the walls crazy, and so unbelievably lax with the rules that even though the students are upset with how strict Riddle is, they still don’t want that guy back or talk about how they wish he could be in charge again. Like who was this menace to society?

Ten hours of driving. Almost nine at night. You were both exhausted as you pulled into Blackpool, looking for a cheap hotel with a vacancy. The waning daylight painting the sky a vivid purple.
You looked over at Liam, the gangly, nerdy werewolf in the driver's seat. You wouldn't have thought how barely two hours into the drive you'd already sucked him off. Though, the smell in the car might have been a giveaway. It had stopped bothering you now, even if the mixture of musk and cum was keeping you hot, sitting on a damp patch spreading from your eager cunt.
Liam pulled the car into a neat parallel park, opening his door. The waft of fresh air hit you, cool after the stuffy car. He walked around the slightly shitty Astra, opening your door and offering his hand to you to step out.
You took it and got up "you know, it's a little late to do the whole knight in shining armour bit"
He grinned at you "Aww, I can't be nice to you without you suspecting I have some ulterior motive?"
"Well, somebody forgot their meds, and we passed like, four pharmacies in Blackpool" You both knew he was recently off his rut suppressants, so he was a stinking, wriggling hornball, even for a young werewolf. Of course, you hadn't said anything when you actually could've got some more.
"Why ruin the fun?" He winked. He had a point.
You followed him into the hotel, letting him step up to the reception desk. You felt like you could smell your arousal on you, and just wanted a shower at this point. A card machine beeped and a set of keys were handed over. Liam tossed them to you, putting his muzzle next to your ear
"Go on ahead to the room. Wait on the bed, I'll handle the luggage." He pulled away and went back to the car.
You started up the stairs to your room when your phone buzzed in your pocket. You checked it, a message from Liam
"Don't shower"
You smiled to yourself, climbing the stairs to the top floor. The hotel was old, probably a Victorian building. The hallways smelled of old wood and carpet, winding in a maze of room numbers that seemed to travel in no particular order. You found yours and opened the door.
The bastard. He'd got you a fancy suite. You sat on the king bed, looking out of the window, the sea twinkling in the last light of the sun as it dipped below the horizon. You stepped through a pair of French doors onto a balcony, feeling the warm evening air and taking in the view.
A pair of arms wrapped around your waist. That familiar warm musky smell wafted over you. A smile danced on your face.
He nibbled on your neck "You wanted me to return the favour?"
You purred, reaching up to bury your hand in the fur of his neck, leaning your head back into him as he gently bit, being careful not to break the skin. You turned to him, your face less than an inch from his nose
"Out here?"
"If you insist" He pushed you back against the railing before kneeling down in front of you, pulling off your soiled knickers and opening your legs a little. His muzzle was between your legs, sniffing and nuzzling his nose into you. "You smell good"
You giggled, blushing as you held your skirt down over him "It's a bit public, right?"
"Nobody's looking, it's just us up here"
You closed your eyes and took a shuddering breath, centring yourself "You're right, it's just us." You put a hand on his head, holding him to your drooling cunt "Now, you have a promise to keep"
He was shy when you were in the car, even when you were guiding him. Now that bashfulness is gone. He knew exactly what he wanted, and exactly how to get it. His tongue moved over you, vigorously going from clit to hole, lapping at your lips as he worked to replace all the wetness that had got on you in the car with his own drool.
You felt your knees buckle, he was good at this. His wide, flat tongue hit everywhere you could want it to. Your hands tightened on his fur, gripping it hard as you held him to you, whining with every lash of his dextrous mouth.
He couldn't pull away. He didn't want to. You felt him pushing into you, felt his jaws opening to fit your crotch into his mouth as he pressed his tongue against your hole, reaching up inside you to taste your most intimate of places.
You gasped. You'd had sex before, but never like this. He was single minded like none of your previous lovers, determined to draw every whine and whimper from you that he could.
You bit your lip, failing to contain the sobbing, wailing moan that accompanied your orgasm. You felt yourself spraying him as your cunt clenched and your knuckles whitened, holding him in place. He didn't care. His hungry tongue kept lapping at you, even as your whimpers went from orgasmic to painful. You were still holding him there. Soaked in your relief, he carried on, taking you through your second, then third.
Finally you let go. He guided you to the floor on your shaking legs, grinning at you with soaking, matted fur.
"Let's have that shower now"
#######################################
I like Liam, I feel like he's gonna continue being a fun character going forwards.

Eigengrau gets a cluttered desk. As a treat. They also get to swear. As a treat (A while ago I did a poll asking if hashtag do I let them swear and everyone except one person said no but I know that one person and I'm fairly certain if that poll was made today they'd say yes, so. Hashtag I let them swear)
Yall wouldn't believe me if I said you almost got this part like. A solid month ago at this point. For like a week in February I got super motivated and almost completely finished it but then the thing where I get distracted happened and I didn't do it. Also, this is my first time posting since I was forced to update this app (i used to be on a super old version but then it had a stroke) and I will say I'm. Not a fan of and a little confused by the lots of new options upon posting stuff. Hopefully I didn't mess this up
Also on an unrelated note this is as far as I had scripted out, so! It might be an even hotter second than normal until the next part until I figure that out. Or not. We'll see. I have ideas for what needs to happen but I don't know how to link them, so that's something I'll need to figure out. Also I think I'm gonna scrap the "schedule" of comic and then regular post that I'm doing, because multiple times now I've had a part done but no regular post to use to space them, so. Bye bye that, it worked for a bit but not any more
Wow this got long. Do I usually write these things this long? I don't remember
Anyway sona update coming soon probably yippeee

often susceptible to that human folly that is wanting people who are also part of a thing to at least acknowledge when you spent a bunch of hours working on something thats is for that thing

hii I was just wondering why you think the aprilia bikes will be horrible next yr? because to me based on recent races it feels like theyre doing ok esp compared to other non-ducati teams.
'horrible' is maybe a strong word, but even by their standards this second half of the season has been pretty abysmal. and it'd be in line with my long-term expectation, where I think aprlia's done very well in motogp and I'm very impressed with their general trajectory but... I kind of feel like their title-winning opportunity might have already come and gone. mainly because the other manufacturers have a lot more spending power than them. now, I'm aware this is an expectation that might age quite poorly if ktm is in as much financial trouble as they seem to be but... just on aprilia, obviously it's plausible that it's a race-winning bike next season, that a rider as capable as martin can fight for victories on multiple occasions, but... well, it's not going to be title-winning machinery, is it. and it's not the one of the non-ducati manufacturers I would personally bet on making that step in the next few years. and even if I'm wrong and it IS, inevitably it's going to be a step down for the two riders going there next year. which is. a shame
#also 'ok compared to the other non-ducati teams' is maybe correct but the standard is in hell#still a bit generous though like i wouldn't say they've been convincingly better than *yamaha* recently which...#it's a bit of a logical problem because i broadly expect ducati to have peaked in dominance#which means i must think SOMEBODY will be closer to ducati next year. it's just that when you name the actual other manufacturers...#i mean i was vaguely buying into the ktm dream again but this does not seem like a good time to invest into those stonks#all that being said i do rate martin highly enough that i think he'll do a fair bit better with that bike than its current riders#//#brr brr#batsplat responds#//currt#what i also find a bit spooky about the aprilia is how it sometimes seems to develop a technical defect and tries to kill its rider#the oliveira thing hasn't gotten much attention on here i feel because he's not all that popular but i would find that quite unnerving#basically had his season ended in a practise session through no fault of his own!!#less disastrous consequences but ditto vinales portimao#idk i somehow don't conceptually vibe with a bike that might just throw me to the moon because of random technical issues

Sometimes I think the hardest part of writing is knowing what normal people DON'T know.
#this post brought to you by me trying to write an environmental scientist character and wondering if anyone would think it's strange for#them to pick up a weed and go oh i know what species this is#which is a thing i can do. can most people do that?#i feel like most people know a few of their region's most common plants but anything beyond that is a bit much#like i've always known dandelions and stuff but i learned ragweed and poison ivy pretty recently#i learned ragweed less than 2 weeks ago actually#it doesn't help that i spend too much time with other environemntal people who can also identify plants and birds and rocks and shit#so i start to think it's normal#i can only identify a few rocks a few plants and the majority of songbirds but almost no birds of prey#i don't think knowing most local songbirds is normal but i grew up with that one#hylian rambles#writer problems

I really do not dig the ideas for the skully rework.
just because wesker is well liked by many players for being well-balanced does not mean he should be the model for how to balance every killer. not that I would even say that's exactly what's happening beyond the "well people like wesker, and wesker can dash, so let's just give skull merchant a dash-like ability to shut the haters up" idea. cause wesker is also liked because he provides engaging chases, has a fairly straight forward power, respectable add-ons, and well, because he's a popular licensed character from a massive franchise. those things should also be considered when looking to his positive reception as a killer for guidance.
and why in the name of the singularity's voluptuous thighs did anyone working on this redesign consider including ANY aspect of the twins is beyond me. the twins are...one of this game's biggest tragedies with how fucking poorly they've been handled over the years. the sole example I can think of, in my nigh six years of playing the game, where a whole PTB actually didn't make it to live because it was so unbelievably bad.
if bhvr announced some redesign for hux that totally removed the camera surveillance system from the function of his biopods (you will NEVER be the singularity, you stupid bear) and replaced it with a chewed up and regurgitated feature from one of the most poorly designed killers in the game, I would not only be gutted--- I would be livid.
idk, like this just feels very, very careless after so many good killer updates that actually listened to what the PLAYERS OF THAT KILLER thought were reasonable improvements to make. why are we all of a sudden listening to the kinds of players who would immediately try to off themselves on first hook against any killer that downed them "too quickly??" or who complain that hux is "too complex," but never ever touch an EMP the entire match??
#dbd#thoughts about media#I don't think they've actually shown anything from trickster's planned redesign right?#seeing skully's makes me worried for that terrible bastard (affectionate)#anyway this plan doesn't sound good and I think they need to approach this from the perspective of people who actually play her religiously#at the root of a lot of problems with killers that...might be annoying to handle is also the terrible experience of solo queue survivor#as well as the lack of penalties in place for survivors being assholes to their own teammates and ditching/sabotaging#there are many killers whose powers are very very easy to counter with simple teamwork#but survivors aren't incentivised enough or supported enough to play that way#I think totally gutting or completely redesigning a killer like skully will not fix how much she is liked by survivors at all#I think that genuinely listening to what her devout players feel is healthiest for her is the best thing to do#and to do that ALONGSIDE continuing to make an effort to improve solo queue survivor & provide in-game info to less experienced players#an example of this would be like. oh idk. reworking certain universal perks to not be total ass.#or removing a powerful feature from a very strong PAYED perk (OTR for example) and giving it to a universal perk instead.#better tutorials. literally just get otz to help with this. I beg you bhvr.#the basic tutorial he made recently explaining the more confusing killers in plain language was EXCELLENT.#dbd needs to equip newer players with that kind of knowledge so they aren't immediately overwhelmed by killers like skully. hux. or drac.#a tutorial that takes a new player through understanding that kind of basic information about killers would make more of a difference imo--#--than just taking a more complex killer like skully and totally fucking ripping her apart.

Thinking abt the second dream story featuring a third dream story I can't remember if I ever talked abt. I <3 body horror bonus points if its slow and agonizing
#rat rambles#oc posting#the more recent dream was far less defined of a story than the other two main dreams I based stories off of but it still stuck with me#mostly because it involed dragons and body horror and both of those things are sick as hell#and I decided to put it in the same world at the story with grim since that dream also technically had dragons in it#ok but actually the main reason is to fill in some worldbuilding gaps that planted grief (the working name for grims story) had#Im still working on the worldbuilding it's been a slow process since neither story has rly gotten to be my primary focus at any given time#but Im slowly getting somewhere#mainly the important thing is figuring out what the world outside of planted grief's setting looks like and how much magic is in either#for context an important element of this world is that it is a very magical world but a certain region of it is more or less blocked off#from the rest of the world and within that region magic is far less prevelant to the point that for most ppl it may as well not exist#now for what I have so far its not necessary that these ppl don't know magic exists its just that its like. kind of hard for them to#remember it does? like when they see magic they are able to recognize it's magic and as smth fairly normal if not a bit weird to see here#but when there isnt actively magical shit going on they just sort of. cant hold onto that knowledge and forget abt it#this also applies to a lot of other things relating to magic and the rest of the world outside the region#its why they're pretty well known for their region being cursed as hell and its people even more cursed#outside the region it's pretty well known that some great tragedy befell those lands at some point in the far off past that probably is the#cause of how weird and fucky things are over there and that the barriers were set up at some point to stop it from spreading#nowadays the borders aren't super strict and people are free to cross them given they go through the proper paperwork and stuff#but most ppl on either side tend to at least be heavily advised to not take the risk for many reasons#its generally not too uncommon for outsiders to move in for work reasons tho#the main concern is that the more magical one is the harder time theyll have since ppl will often just. forget they exist when not directly#interacting with them. which isnt usually too bad but it does lead to various safety concerns that have to be addressed#the good news is that generally the longer one hangs around people the easier time they'll have remembering them as they form their own#associations with them and are able to cling to the memory that way#but the bad news is that while foreigners will never be completely susceptible to the curse™ they will start to feel the effects of it the#longer they live there which tends to be very distressing to those who end up living there long term#one part of the curse™ theyll never be hit with as hard as locals is the days of grief that hit the population Hard every now and then#basically just full days where everyone is suddenly completely inconsolable or just otherwise out of it and then completely forget abt it#once the local dragons deal with the source of the issue

How does one contract scurvy from eating too many homemade pickles? And how many is too many?
when i first moved out and started cooking for myself i had a very poor diet. i think @lizardho has a picture of my fridge at one point, it was just various kinds of pickled things, and cured meats.
fast forward after like, three or four months of this, and i was at the dentist, getting my teeth cleaned, when the hygenist went ah, babs, your gums are bleeding. u need to floss more.
and i went i floss like, three times a day, and it always bleeds, and im always gentle, and you are lying bastard gum torturers. u can do what u need to, but dont stab my mouth and blame me when it bleeds.
the hygenist took exception to that. we didn't really shout at each other, but it was a tense exchange and i was just much more crabby than normal. eventually he left to get the dentist to sort things out.
cue the dentist coming back. he checked out my gums, gave me a lookover, then said hey. babs. are your joints kind of achey?
and i went yeah, i'm kind of hoping for another growth spurt, i'm 5'11 and it would be nice to finally hit the ol' 6'
and he went yeah, but you're 21, so that's not gonna happen. got any rashes? weird bruises?
and i had some decent bruises, and a weird rash on my leg, and he looked at them and we yeah you are quite vitamin c deficient. thats not easy to do in arizona. how much fresh fruit or vegetables have you had in your diet recently?
and i went does pickled count?
and that was his lightbulb moment. apparently pickling breaks down the vitamin c in things really well. he told me that i should just like, eat one or two raw bell peppers a day for a week and call him if that worked.
it did. my gums stopped bleeding, and my knees stopped hurting at night and my skin just felt smoother and nicer and i got a lot less crabby. no more mouthing off at dental hygenists.
i called him when the week was done, and i was embarrassed that i'd given myself scurvy like it was still the 18th century, and he said naw, not scurvy, but like. noticable deficiency. he said that it was a weird problem, but he'd run into it before - mostly with college students fresh out of the house. people trying to live off peanut butter and ramen for a few months at a time.
i took a multivitamin after that, but i also made an effort to try and eat like a normal human being. i failed occasionally but the effort made me feel a lot better.
my time in cross country gave me this sort of gnostic-feeling about my body. like it was a weak thing that i needed to overcome through will, and not like. me. at least not actually me. i think this was my first big wake up call that no, the body is not my enemy, i am my body, i am a physical object in this world, and if i don't take care of myself i am going to be worse at everything, including moral tasks, like not being a dick to the dental hygenist.
so. yeah. tldr, please don't spend months trying to live off pickles and salami. :/

I think there's a lot of signs pointing to Jayce actually doing the right thing ...or at least the right thing based on the information available to him at the time.
We can't know for a fact just how much Viktor was changed and what his healing was doing to the people who came to him in the long run, but considering all the hints dropped by the writers, the situation is much less clear than we think. Obviously, everyone's first instinct is to condemn Jayce and his actions, especially because Viktor is one of fan favourites, but looking at the teaser for the next Act and what little we know about what happened to Jayce, I think it might have been necessary evil.
I think this scene of Viktor temporarily 'possessing' Salo in order to talk with Jayce points to just how fucked this little community that Viktor created actually is. There's a reason why everyone's getting those 'it's a freaking cult' vibes.
This scene made me more uncomfortable than anything else this season and I think it's clear that it was meant to make feel that way. There's something so uncanny about Viktor's voice coming out of Salo's mouth, especially paired with that look on his face and how Viktor seems to be able to see and experience things through him in this moment.
And then there's also the issue of all these people dying a horrible drawn-out death as soon as Viktor himself 'dies'. Yes, they came to him on their own, they asked to be healed, but did they really know what they are getting into? Did they know this is what might happen?
Some of them were already dying, true, but Viktor healed all kinds of people, some of whom most likely had their whole lives ahead of them. He, knowingly or not, inevitably sped up this process. Not all of them were consummed by Shimmer-addiction or permanently disabled like Salo.
And then there's also the fact of all of them basically abandoning their previous lives to serve Viktor and his community. Which, okay, makes sense, there's certainly a parallel with the community that Ekko created for Zaunites to keep them safe from Piltover and Silco's plans. They made an informed choice, though, and I don't think the same can be said about Viktor's cult-like commute.
They seem peaceful, yes, but also devoid of personality and entirely dedicated to Viktor and his cause. Of course, it can be explained by gratitude towards him and desire to be kept safe in a calm and peaceful environment, but it's taken to such an extreme point that it definitely crosses the line into uncanny territory in my eyes. Their hivemind behaviour is very unsettling and even though Viktor seems to frame his recent actions as some kind of greater good, I don't think it's necessarily true.
We have yet to find out what Jayce saw and who's in the right and who's in the wrong. Either way, as usual when it comes to Arcane, it seems to me that more than ever, everyone's a victim of the circumstances and tragedy spares no one.
Considering that Viktor is set up to be 'reborn', I can't help but wonder what it means for his community and if they will also be brought to life by whatever connection they have with him. It would be a fascinating choice given how Viktor's arc has always been about autonomy and making your own choices.
Arcane, it's been a pleasure having my heart torn out of my chest by you. Can't wait for the last Act.

the power play (part two)
pairing hockeyplayer! rafe cameron x tutor! reader
rating mature 18+
summary rafe is your complete opposite. the only thing you have in common with the hockey player you tutor is that he’s also recently had his heart broken. in a last-ditch effort to make the people who hurt you regret it, you agree to pretend to date.
< prev
“There’s no way I just heard you right,” Lyla says. You look at your best friend through your phone screen, her mouth agape.
A moment ago, she called to invite you to her dorm room to watch movies. That sounds much better than the nerve-wracking plans you’ve already set for tonight.
“You did,” you laugh.
“You’re going to party,” she repeats, “with Rafe.”
“Yup,” you say. You set your phone down on your bed as you rifle through your closet. You’re already dressed, but you need to do something to expel your nervous energy.
You agreed to put on this farce yesterday. Now that you said it out loud, it’s setting in that you’re really going through with this.
“Back up,” she says over the phone behind you. “How did this happen?”
“We’ve gotten to know each other over tutoring. He asked me out. I said yes.”
“You actually like him like that?”
“Yeah.”
“Wow,” she replies.
You try to ignore the guilt that’s sitting on your shoulders. You’ve never lied to her, to anyone, like this.
But while she is your best friend, the bond she has with her twin brother is untouchable. You doubt she’d keep the truth of what you’re doing from Beck.
You settle back on your bed, picking up your phone.
“Well, I hope you have fun,” Lyla says with a chuckle, clearly surprised by your behavior. “I can’t wait to hear all about it.”
“Thanks,” you say meekly. You’ve never been on a real date. You’re not sure how convincing you’ll be on a pretend one.
A text notification appears, making your stomach turn with nerves.
It’s Rafe.
There in ten minutes.
════════
You haven’t stopped talking since you got in his car.
Rafe glances over at you when he stops at a red light, a minute away from the student house at the edge of campus.
“We have to be believable, right?” you ramble on, growing uneasier the more you think about it. “Wait, will this look bad if anyone in the tutoring program finds out I’m dating you? It’s not like they ever said we can’t see the people we tutor, but if–”
“We can call this off,” Rafe interrupts. If you’re going to be a nervous mess, he’d rather not do this at all.
You cross your arms, staring ahead at the traffic light. It turns green.
“No. I just want to be prepared,” you say. “You’re sure he won’t be there?”
Rafe drives forward. He’d told you that most of the guys on the hockey team show up to these parties, but Beck usually skips out.
You’re hopeful he attends, but it may be better to ease into this before having to worry about convincing Beck just yet. Rafe is certain his ex will be there and you feel less pressure at the thought of having to trick one person instead of two.
“Pretty sure,” Rafe replies.
He doesn’t get why some athletes are so high-strung about partying. He parties every weekend and his game is just as solid.
It worked so well with Emma. He liked that she chased fun and had a careless approach to life that made him feel like if he spent enough time with her, he could, too.
“Okay,” you heavily sigh. “We’ll only have one person to fool, then.”
“Don’t take it so seriously, alright?” he says. “It’s just a party. We’ll show up, look like a couple, and leave.”
You nod, trying to picture how you should act tonight. You’ll hold Rafe’s hand. You’ll hug him. You’ll pretend like he’s charming, like he’s someone you can’t stop thinking about, instead of the cold person you know him to be.
“No kissing,” you say hurriedly. You’re not about to waste your first kiss on Rafe Cameron.
He snorts a laugh.
“Not a problem,” he says.
════════
The house is humid and crowded and loud. The bass is so heavy that you can’t make out the lyrics.
You’d thought touching Rafe would only be for show, but as he pushes through the foyer, you cup the inside of his elbow, using him as an anchor.
He greets a few guys once he gets to the living room. Some are familiar, hockey players you’ve seen before.
Rafe introduces you. By the way you’re clinging onto him as you greet his friends, he can tell you’re still on edge, but hiding it behind a big smile.
He leans down to speak close to your ear, and you realize since you’d only ever sat together before, you’d never noticed just how much he towers over you.
“I’m getting a beer,” Rafe says. “Do you drink?”
“Not usually,” you reply. “But I’ll take one.”
════════
On Rafe’s way back to you, he sees her. Emma’s in the crowd, smiling and dancing.
He still doesn’t get how she could throw it all away. They had so much fun together. He forgot about all the bad shit when he was with her. And then, all of a sudden, it was over.
He returns to find you chatting with Isaac, the team’s goalie. You thank Rafe for the drink, taking a sip and doing an awful job at hiding how much you hate the taste, and pull him into the conversation.
“Did you know he’s a music major?” you say, pointing to Isaac.
“Yeah,” Rafe says stiffly, still reeling from seeing his ex. “We’ve known each other for two years.”
“It’s so cool,” you say, unbothered by Rafe’s prickliness. “What kind of music are you most interested in?”
You continue to chat with Isaac, who’s clearly happy to be on the subject. Your nerves are stable now that you’re distracted by a genuine conversation.
Once there’s a lull, you turn to Rafe, clinking your beer against his, feeling like yourself again.
“Kind of late to cheers you now, but cheers,” you say.
“Do you talk everyone’s ear off?” he asks.
“I try to,” you reply with a grin, handing him your drink. “And now I need to go to the bathroom.”
════════
As you walk through the hallway to head back downstairs, a shelf crammed with books catches your eye. Unable to curb your curiosity, you wander into the bedroom to inspect the colorful spines.
You realize you lost track of time when a harsh voice interrupts your reading of a book’s back cover.
“You serious?” you hear behind you.
You turn to see Rafe at the door, two beers in his hands. You must have been gone so long that he had to come look for you.
“Oops,” you giggle. You cross the room, taking your drink back. “Thanks. I just wanted to check out the collection.”
“I didn’t bring you here to read,” he says sharply.
“Jeez,” you say, brows furrowing. Emma had said he was mean. She wasn’t kidding. “Why are you being grumpier than usual?”
Rafe exhales a sigh, but it’s not frustrated like usual. It’s wobbly. Almost sad.
“She’s here,” he murmurs.
Your heart sinks. She’s here. And you left him alone.
You beckon him into the room, shutting the door to avoid anyone overhearing. The music is muffled now, your senses mildly blurred from the alcohol.
“I didn’t mean to get distracted,” you say softly.
You gaze up at him to see that the hard, angry exterior you’ve grown accustomed to is gone. Right now, there’s a glimpse of softness, of genuine heartbreak.
You realize you only really heard Emma’s perspective on the relationship. You hardly know Rafe’s.
“She really did a number on you, huh?” you ask.
He only looks to the side, quiet and tense. You point to the desk by the window.
“Let’s sit,” you say.
“We don’t have to get into it,” he groans.
You settle on the desk’s surface.
“I should have some background information, don’t you think?” you say. “Humor me. I’m a decent listener. Way better at talking, but...”
You smile. Rafe is sure he’ll never understand how someone can be this damn perky.
Once he can tell you’re not letting it go, he shifts to sit on the chair, looking up at you through slitted eyes.
“How long were you together?” you ask.
“Few months.”
It's a little less impossible to picture Rafe as a boyfriend now that you see his guard down by half an inch. He must not open up all that much. You assume that’s why the breakup is hitting him so hard.
“Did you meet here at school?”
“Yeah.” He thinks back to when he’d sparked a conversation with Emma the first weekend of his sophomore year. “Things were good, but then she…”
He stops talking. He’s being pathetic. The night she ended things has been on a loop in his head. They were both drunk, at a party just like this one, arguing like they always did, when she said she was done with it, with everything.
That was a month and a half ago and he’s still a wreck.
He can’t help it. He’s always felt like a bottomless pit of a person, and Emma helped fill the void, made him feel like he was worth something.
Now that what she gave him is gone, he’s back to emptiness. To the constant reminders of how unlovable he is.
You stare at him. It’s obvious in the pain behind his stare, the tightness of clenched fists, that she broke his heart.
“Was it unexpected?” you ask.
He nods.
“Did you talk to her downstairs?”
“No,” he says. He pinches the bridge of his nose, pain radiating in his core. “This whole thing is stupid.”
“It’s not,” you say. “And as your tutor, I have to tell you that stupid is a bad word.”
He flashes you an unimpressed glare. The tables have turned between you, dropping you into the role of the one who needs to be confident and reassuring.
“It’ll be fine,” you say, your tone lighthearted. “You just have to look like you’re having fun with your new girlfriend, who you’re completely infatuated with and who you would never yell at for innocently reading the back cover of a book.”
Rafe looks towards the bookshelf he found you standing next to, guilt pinching his chest. He’s always hated it about himself, how he snaps first and thinks later.
“Any chance you saw Beck?” you ask.
“No.”
“Okay,” you say. You chug the rest of your beer and wince once the bottle is empty. “That was gross. Let’s go.”
════════
It takes a few minutes to catch Emma’s eye from across the noisy, inebriated crowd.
You’re standing in the corner of the living room facing Rafe, your arms on his shoulders like he instructed you to do. Once her gaze is on you, you cock your head.
“She’s looking,” you say.
The combination of witnessing Rafe’s heartbreak and drinking the bitter alcohol has loosened up your nerves. The man standing across from you may be rough around the edges, but he has a heart. And he gave it to someone who shattered it.
While you might not know much about their failed relationship, seeing his pain up close is enough to make you want to help.
You step a little closer, the room’s heat pressing on your skin.
“Did you start Pride and Prejudice yet?” you ask.
Rafe’s eyes sweep over your face, his big hands settling on your hips.
“Don’t tutor me right now.”
“We’re supposed to be flirting, so we have to talk about something,” you reply. “It’s a really good book. A love story if you’re into that.”
He grimaces.
“Well, it explores other themes, too.”
You notice Emma’s still looking right at you, and this time, Gabby is standing beside her and staring daggers, too.
“Hey, is it possible to get drunk off of one beer?” you ramble. “Or is it just placebo?”
“Get closer,” he tells you impatiently.
“Right.”
You slide your hands around the back of his neck and pull him down into a hug, his cheek pressed on yours, the aroma of crisp aftershave drifting over you.
“I should limit myself to half a beer next time,” you say in his ear, faking a smile.
“Lightweight,” he replies.
You act like you’re scanning the room, as if you’re meeting Emma’s eyes by chance, and when you see her cold stare, you squeeze him tighter.
“She looks really mad,” you tell him.
Rafe smirks, his chest grazing yours. It feels good knowing he still has an effect on his ex. If she was really over him like she said she is, she wouldn’t care. This is the taste of power he needed.
He slides his hands to the small of your back, languidly dragging up the curve of your spine.
If he was a guy you like, if he was Beck, you’d be a nervous mess right now. But this is methodical and calculated. It’s easy to flirt with someone when it’s fake. There’s nothing on the line.
In the corner of your eye, Emma whispers something to Gabby and they disappear into the crowd. You pull back and slowly slip your hands off of Rafe’s shoulders to pat his chest.
“She left and she wasn’t happy,” you say. “You’re welcome.”
════════
When you think about last Friday, it’s like you’re recalling a story you heard about someone else, because it can’t possibly have been you.
One drink had you completely uninhibited. You’ve never been so close to a man before, and there you were, holding Rafe against you, murmuring in his ear, acting like two mutually interested people at a party, when in reality, you’re both always at least a little annoyed with each other.
As you sit in the study room, waiting for him to arrive for your tutoring session, you’re unsure if it’ll be awkward to look him in the eye after all that happened between you.
“Hey,” Rafe coolly says when he comes in.
“Hey,” you reply.
“Beck asked about you.”
You perk up, completely distracted from whatever you were just feeling.
“What?”
Rafe settles in his usual spot, a satisfied smile pulling at his lips, clearly proud of himself for thinking of this ruse in the first place.
“The other day at practice,” he says. He pulls out his laptop. “He asked me if you and me are hanging out.”
“And?”
“I said yeah, but it’s all fake.” He gives you an impatient shrug. “What do you think I said?”
“Ha ha,” you say flatly. “His sister’s my best friend. He must’ve heard about us from her.”
You were convincing when Lyla asked you about how your date went the next day, telling her that you had a great time with Rafe. She’s still surprised at the mismatched pair, but she’s trying to be supportive.
Rafe notices the subtle frown on your face as you pull his laptop forward.
“Did he say anything else?” you ask.
“No.”
“He’s asked his sister and you about me,” you say, “but he won’t talk to me himself. If he wants to check in on me, he should. I mean, I’ll definitely lie and say I’ve been doing great, but still.”
You try to shake away the thought. You hate how much you still care, how much his years of flirting with you just for everything to end the way it did have hurt you.
“Have you heard from Emma?” you ask.
Sorrow seeps into you when Rafe’s eyes lose their brightness. You shouldn’t have asked.
“She’s trying to act like she doesn’t care,” you try to console him. “You’ll have the last laugh.”
You swiftly change the subject, finding the file he was supposed to fill with a first draft. There’s hardly anything. You suck your teeth with a disappointed tsk.
“Rafe,” you say. “You need to come here with more written down.”
“What the hell am I supposed to write about a love story?” he grumbles.
“I already told you there are other themes in this book,” you reiterate. “Let’s go through them.”
════════
The next evening, you’re leaving the library after a study session when your phone vibrates with a text. It’s Rafe, letting you know that the team is celebrating a win at an off-campus bar and that you should come.
Imagining yourself walking into the bar and seeing Beck and acting the same way you did at that party feels impossible. A little part of you is worried last weekend’s display was a lucky fluke.
You reply to him as you walk deeper into the cool spring night: I have readings to do.
When ur done then?
You stare down at your screen, uncertain and nervous. It was easy when you had Emma to fool. You were confident she’d have some sort of reaction, seeing that it was her ex-boyfriend you were cuddling up to.
But Beck might not even care. And that’d hurt.
You eventually come to the conclusion that it’s worth a try. Beck damaged your pride. You want to undo some of that damage. And you didn’t start this just to back out.
You text Rafe: I’ll call you when I get there.
════════
Half an hour later, your name flashes on Rafe’s phone. He stands from his place at the table, all other seats taken up by teammates and girlfriends, and he makes his way to the entrance of the bar.
Even though you’re just someone he’s pretending to be into, it feels good to have a person come to a party just for him again. Emma used to always tag along for these things, back when she was the constant in his life.
“Hey,” he answers your call.
“Meet me at the front,” you say on the other end. Rafe finds you at the door, your arms crossed, your lips pulled into an awkward smile.
“I didn’t want to come in alone,” you explain. He puts his phone back in his pocket, eyes travelling over you in confusion. Why are you back to being nervous?
“Loosen up,” he says.
“I’m trying,” you breathe.
“Just follow my lead,” he says. “Act like you don’t care that he’s here.”
Rafe offers you his hand and you take it, feeling his slightly calloused palm against yours. You keep your gaze on the floor as he takes you into the loud bar.
He doesn’t give you a chance to think. He gets to his seat and pulls you onto his lap. You try your best to act like this is something you’ve done before.
You drape your arm around his shoulders, looking down at him, finding a sense of reassurance in his striking blue eyes as his lap warms the underside of your thighs.
“Casually sitting on your lap,” you mumble. “This is normal for us. Totally normal. Who needs a chair? Not me.”
Most of the group is in lively conversation. Some people don’t even notice your arrival. But Beck does.
You offer him a small smile from across the table, the sight of him making your stomach flutter. He nods in greeting, unreadable.
Rafe’s hand rests on the side of your bare thigh, fingers splayed over your cool skin, right where your skirt ends.
“You’re cold,” he says, loud enough over the music, quiet enough that only you can hear him.
His muscles start to tighten as his thumb brushes over the swell of your thigh.
It’s instinct. He can’t control that he’s getting worked up. He has a pretty girl on his lap. It’d be weird if his body didn’t have some sort of reaction.
“Yeah. It’s cold out,” you reply.
“How’d you get here?” he asks accusingly.
“I walked.”
“Walked?” he repeats. “By yourself?”
“Campus security can only escort me through school property,” you say. “I was on my own for like, two minutes.”
“Don’t do that again,” he says, quieter now. “I’d never let my girl walk alone at night.”
You tilt your head, frustration bubbling up inside you.
“Let?” you echo, brows furrowed.
He stares at you with hard eyes, forcing himself to push past the irritation of what you’re implying — that he’s controlling. He heard it from Emma before. She never understood that he was trying to protect her.
You’re supposed to be happy to see each other, not arguing. And he needs to get you back for pissing off his ex the other night. And it’s a good idea to get his hand off of your leg for his own sake.
His touch is featherlight when he cups your cheek. Your eyes soften with appreciation. He’s putting on this show for you, forcing your tense conversation to look sweet, and it makes you a bit more relaxed.
His ex is nowhere to be found, but he’s being affectionate with you, holding up his part of the deal. You can only hope this is working on Beck. You’d spent years seeing him with girls; he’d never seen you with a guy.
“I would’ve picked you up,” Rafe says stiffly, his tone mismatching his gesture. “If you were my girlfriend, I wouldn’t be cool with knowing something could happen to you. You said we have to be believable, yeah?”
You study him under the dimmed, warm lights, your heart racing from feeling Beck’s presence at the other side of the table.
“So, it’s like you… feel responsible for my safety or something?” you ask.
The stress digging in Rafe’s shoulders fades into a relief he wasn’t expecting. It’s uncommon for him to feel understood. He felt it at times with his ex, but she hardly ever tried to see his side, calling him too much.
As if he needed the reminder. He knows he’s too much.
“Yeah,” he replies.
“I’ll tell you to come get me next time.”
He lowers his hand, resting it on your leg again. This time, though, he makes sure to only be touching your clothes, making no contact with your skin.
“How was the game?” you ask.
“We always beat Hatfield,” Rafe says.
“How many penalties did you get?”
“I don’t count.”
“I wouldn’t, either,” you say. “You’re in the sin bin a lot.”
Rafe’s lips curl into a smile that tells you he agrees, but that he also won’t change a thing.
“How’d you know that?”
“I came to a lot of games last semester.”
“You should probably start coming to them again,” he says.
He’s right. If this were real, you’d be coming to the rink to cheer your boyfriend on.
“It’s kind of hard for me,” you admit.
Rafe grimaces in the impatient way he always does, wearing that look that implies whatever you just said is silly. You lick your lips nervously, leaning even closer to him to explain.
“I used to go to all of his games,” you say, hushed. “All through high school, too. Sitting behind the home bench just reminds me of all the time I wasted thinking he liked me, too.”
You pull back. Rafe stares at you for a moment. Despite your differences, you really have been hurt the same way. You both saw a future with someone who gave you a glimmer of hope just to shut you down.
He doesn’t usually care enough to make someone feel better. Right now is different.
“Then sit behind the sin bin,” he says. “Count my penalties for me.”
You laugh. And when you notice Beck’s eyes on you, it feels really good.
You think back to what Rafe said, to act like you don’t care. You notice Isaac a few seats away and greet him with a hello and a smile, then meet Beck’s gaze.
“How was the game?” you say casually from across the table.
“Good,” Beck answers. “It’s cool to play with Marcus again.”
“Oh, right,” you say. Marcus was a mutual friend in high school who now plays for Hatfield, a college a town away. “Did you get to talk to him?”
“Not really,” Beck replies. “What’s up with you? It’s been a while.”
It’s irritating to hear him say that, as if the distance between you wasn’t all because of him. You used to talk to Beck all the time, until he unexpectedly drove you away.
You shrug, hoping you don’t give away how hurt you’ve been.
“Not much,” you say. You look at Rafe, willing yourself to flirt with another man in front of the one who broke your heart. “This one guy I’m tutoring has been taking up all my time.”
“Sounds rough,” Rafe says.
“Yeah,” you play along, “but I’m very patient.”
“You are,” Beck says. “I wouldn’t have survived last semester if it weren’t for you.”
You force another smile, meeting Beck’s gaze again. You don’t like the reminder of all the time you spent helping him with school, pining for him, hoping he pined for you, too.
Rafe looks between you and Beck as you continue to chat. There’s an obvious history between you two, a tone that only old friends could have, but the exchange is stiff.
It’s clear, at least to him, that there’s something you two aren’t talking about.
════════
Once the night ends, you get into Rafe’s car. He turns the key, the engine roaring to life.
“That was great,” you murmur sarcastically as you put on your seatbelt. You meant it to come out as a joke, but your voice has a strain to it.
It would’ve been amazing if Beck stared like Emma did the other night, but he didn’t. You feel rejected all over again.
“I think he knows us both well enough to know we can’t really like each other like that,” you say. You watch the bar’s neon sign blink in the passenger side mirror as you try to ground yourself. “Oh, well. We tried.”
Rafe highly doubts he caught on. There’s no world where you’d two be a couple — you’re irritatingly chatty and wear your heart on your sleeve, the complete opposite of Rafe and what he looks for in a girl — but while Beck kept a cool facade, his glances at you weren’t skeptical. And they weren’t platonic, either.
He puts the car in drive, anxiety gnawing at him as he pulls out of the parking lot. It sounds like you’re about to call it quits all because of a false assumption.
“He fell for it,” Rafe mutters. “And he was jealous. You’re crazy if you think he wasn’t.”
You were hoping that Beck would be convinced that you’re fine after what happened between you. That maybe he’d regret the way he handled things. But you never thought he’d actually be jealous. Why would he be if he never liked you in the first place?
“Then I guess I’m crazy,” you tell him, “because to me, he didn’t seem to care at all.”
Rafe scratches his jaw, exasperated.
“You ever think that maybe he’s just not transparent like you are?” he says after a beat.
You look at his profile, the passing streetlights washing over the planes of his face.
“Transparent?” you echo. “So, I… gave us away?”
“That’s not what I mean,” Rafe says gruffly. “You’re convincing with my help, but without it, you’re damn easy to read. He’s not as obvious as you. If you looked hard enough, though, you could tell that he really didn’t like that you were sitting on my lap.”
You stare ahead at the darkened street. From your first tutoring session with Rafe, he had you figured out. You mentioned Beck and he caught on to whatever gave you away.
You’ve been able to pretend you’ve been fine, that your heart has been kept intact. Rafe is the only one who saw through it, from the moment he sat down next to you in that study room. He has a knack for reading people.
“How do you do that?” you ask, studying his features once more.
“What?”
“I’m not easy to read,” you say. “Nobody else has picked up on how upset I’ve been over him. Not even my best friend. But you called me out right away. How are you so good at seeing through people?”
Rafe’s grip tightens on the steering wheel. It’s a loaded question.
He spent his childhood hyperware of what unhappiness looks like in people, desperately clinging onto his dad’s fickle approval since he can remember. It never left his system. It turned him into a man trained in recognizing the slightest change in someone’s mood.
He could even sense when Emma was falling out of love with him. She said he was paranoid when he called her out on it, but he knew he was right.
After you spend your life starving for approval, wanting someone to see every side of you and decide that you’re worth loving, it’s second nature to make note of the signs that they’re writing you off. And to lose control when you beg them not to.
He swallows hard. You simply mentioned how observant he is and his mind is spinning now. You stripped back a layer, peeling at a part of him he pretends doesn’t exist.
It’s another thing about you that he’d never want in a real girlfriend. You’re doing what you did the other night when you asked about his ex. You’re prying.
“Just am,” he finally replies.
The tension is nipping at his bones, the memories flooding back with no mercy. Emma never dug at him like this. It’s part of why he liked her so much. She didn’t make him look at these sides of himself.
“Riveting,” you say, rolling your head to the side to look out the window. “Well, you don’t need to try to make me feel better, okay? You can give it to me straight that he doesn’t like me like that.”
“Did you register anything I just said?” he scoffs.
“Now you know how I feel when I’m tutoring you,” you joke, unaffected by his brashness like usual.
“He asked me about you the first chance he got, remember? And he was awkward as hell tonight. He cares. He’s just the type that’s desperate for everyone to think he’s a good guy, so when he’s jealous, he tries to hide it.”
You mull over his words. You’ve only ever thought the world of Beck, until he abruptly distanced himself from you and made you almost certain that he’d been conciously leading you on for years.
To think of him as someone preoccupied with being liked feels accurate. He always keeps the peace, possibly in an effort for approval.
The idea that he did feel something for you, that he does, is a dangerous type of hope you’re well acquainted with. It makes you feel better that someone else sees what you’d seen for years.
Rafe’s words, albeit curt, bring you relief. Beck must feel something that he never wanted to act on. And he might want to act on it now.
“I guess I’m just so used to overthinking about him,” you admit. “Thanks.”
Rafe is silent. Irritated. Tense. You didn’t want to believe all that Emma had told you that night at the rink, but most things check out. He’s moodier than you could’ve expected.
“You okay?” you ask.
He’s doing it again. He’s hardly offering any insight on what he’s thinking, shutting you out. Your dynamic feels unbalanced now, considering how much you’ve told him.
Rafe comes to a stop in front of your building. He’d do anything but admit why he’s so good at reading people. It’s a burden, a reminder of the desperation that’s lived in him ever since he was a child.
“We’re here,” he states flatly.
You unbuckle your seatbelt. Despite everything, you don’t have it in you to be angry at him. Not after he helped you so much. Not after he tried to console you in his own abrupt way.
“Rafe?”
“What?”
You stare at him until he gives in and looks at you, wearing yet another grimace.
“I’m not technically going through a breakup, but if anyone kind of gets what you’re going through right now, it’s me,” you tell him. “I vent to you a lot. It’s cool if you want to vent to me, too. This is all an act, but it doesn’t mean we can’t be friends. That’s all. Thanks for the ride.”
You step out of the car and shut the door, leaving Rafe with the disquieting realization that if he’s going to keep doing this with you, he’ll have to accept the fact that you probably won’t stop prying.
