How am I supposed to focus on real life when Maru, like, exists? And I can pull her up on my phone/computer whenever I want? And I can draw her???

Thinking about you, and Nikolai in the hangar...
The air in the hangar is oppressive, thick and heavy, like someone poured molasses over the atmosphere and let it set. The sun's doing its best impression of an oven light, hanging low and mean, baking the concrete until it practically groans beneath your shoes. The hangar doors gape wide, offering nothing but false promises of relief. There’s a breeze— if you squint—but it’s dry, brittle, like the exhale of a furnace, brushing past you with all the grace of a sigh that couldn’t be bothered.
And there’s Nikolai, carved out of the heat like he belongs to it. You'd have half a mind to be envious if he wasn't such a sight.
The clang of tools against metal ricochets through the space, sharp and purposeful, a kind of industrial 'symphony' (a terrible racket) that he seems to orchestrate with his hands. His shirt is long gone, tossed over a crate in a crumpled surrender, leaving his back bare to the sun’s scrutiny. His skin gleams, a slick sheen of sweat catching the fractured light spilling in through the pannels of the broken skylight. Each movement he makes is a slow, deliberate study in precision.
Broad shoulders roll as he leans into the undercarriage of the hulking helicopter, muscles shifting under his skin in ways that feel almost unfair, like they’re showing off just to spite you.
He’s methodical, movements smooth like they’ve been choreographed. Bolts tighten under his touch as though the machine itself is bending to his will. There’s something poetic about it, the way he works—not rushed, not strained, just unshakable confidence wrapped in sinew and skill. You watch, shameless, like it’s a scene you’re supposed to memorize: the strong lines of his back, the way the damp heat traces the curve of his spine, how the sweat beads at the base of his neck before carving sinuous paths down to disappear beneath the waistband of his work pants.
And then he shifts, leaning further into the machine. His shoulder blades fan out like wings, his back curving, each muscle telling a story in a language you’re desperate to learn. The light catches on the fine sheen of perspiration there, turning it into something almost molten.
His jaw tightens— focus like a blade— and yet, there’s this quiet curl of amusement at the corner of his mouth. A smirk not for you, not for anyone, just something he’s decided to keep for himself.
You stand there, pinned by the sight, caught in the crossfire of his presence and the heat bearing down on you. There’s a pull to him, like gravity’s got its priorities mixed up, and for a second, you wonder what it would take to make him stop. To see him pause, to lean back, to turn that focus toward you instead of the machine.
But the thought passes as quickly as it comes. You settle, content to watch him like this, in his element, untouchable and untamed.

"And you loved her once, too. You were inseparable. I remember the day the Featheringtons moved in across the square. From that day on, it was, “Penelope this,” and “Penelope that,” and “Penelope and I are going to read Don Quixote, and we are going to be knights.”"

Decided to go ahead and publish my newest zine (name your price, aka for free).
This is a work of horror fiction and attempts to make sense of heavy themes. Please mind the content warnings, reader discretion is advised!
Including the artist's statement, this story is a little over 2,200 words long. Accompanying the text is collage and hand drawn illustrations. The tone of this story is deeply bitter, and the experience of reading it is uncomfortably voyeuristic. Although I hope this work of art is engaging to anyone who's interested in this sort of content, I wouldn't describe it as a particularly "fun" read.
Regardless, as you'll learn if you read far enough to get to the artist's statement, this is a deeply personal work of art for me that grapples with a lot of thoughts and emotions I struggle to put into words. So I hope someone else out there gets something from this too.

thinking thoughts and idk about y'all but there's a world of difference between 'you should go along with the toxic boss's bullshit' and 'please don't unnecessarily antagonise someone who is in a position of power over you' and while i don't think the first will happen for obvious reasons i can kind of see the second for reasons that feel equally obvious to me. idk if it's an age thing, an experience of toxic workplaces thing, a growing up under section 28 thing or what but 'protect yourself where you can when you have to' is like...the queer experience 101 for me. and like, i LOVE that for some people that isn't it, but it's okay that for some of us it is.
idk, i don't think i'm expressing this well, but i think what i'm trying to say is that gerrard could be a source of conflict for them without either of them being in the wrong

I need a 911 time travel fic (I don't care about the logistics we had coma dream and ghosts I want time travel) just so s1 Buck and Chimney can be told that they're now family, that Chimney marries Bucks sister and they have kid(s) together. I think that would break them, also over all s1 118 seeing the family that they're gonna have, Imagine it.

i absolutely LOVE flawed fictional women so Ione is perfect to me because of her trust issues and how that affects the people around her but at the same time Velma Von Venkman, another fictional woman, is the target of these trust issues and as a result is isolated and avoided by Ione (and the rest of the scholars) and i find myself shedding solemn tears in my personal conflict

i'm sure it's been said but i feel like both Raxtus and Ronodin can be argued as "the only gay kid in the family and consequently shunned/rejected" and it's like. so weird bc Mull is so Mormon he'd probably rather eat his shorts than even acknowledge the possible existence of gays but
i mean. Raxtus literally has a fairy form. he's a fairy dragon.
Ronodin was just emo lol
and they both get so thoroughly rejected and sidelined by their families their whole lives and it turns Raxtus into an awkward but basically decent guy who runs back to the approval of his family once he's performed masculinity/violence enough to be accepted, only to then realize that he's basically just being used and still not fully trusted/accepted and having to betray them to save his real friends
(who sadly are probably actually homophobic but that's ok bc they're not dragon-phobic so that works out for him)
while Ronodin's like "fuck it. chaos and murder then!" and can you really blame him? he spent his entire life trying to conform to the "right" (in this case, Light) way of life, started spending time with the outgroup and learned to question things, then was told he was "too corrupt" to remain in his home
like. the symbolism is right there.
it's so funny, because sure Raxtus isn't a bad guy, but Ronodin definitely is and he pretty much gets sent to a type of hell at the end of Dragonwatch
and while Raxtus gets kind of a happy ending, like, him becoming an effective killer in a war and being accepted by his dad for being Good At Murder in the first Fablehaven series is presented as a happy ending. if Celebrant didn't wind up being the main villain for Dragonwatch, that probably would've been the end of it! gay kid learns how to soldier and is finally accepted by his homophobic family bc he's finally aggressive enough for them to love him
(i mean i have MANY issues with Celebrant being the main villain later and the reasons he's framed as bad but like. that's a separate rant lol)
the queer reading is right there. but also it's very bad and you can tell completely unintentional. or at the very least highly repressed. idk man i don't look into Mull as a personal individual bc i doubt i'll like what i see and i don't care that much but Dragonwatch was SO MUCH MORE MORMON than Fablehaven already was and it's so weird, seeing the fingerprints of it all over.
i feel like he either has a new editor or he's been doing this for long enough and sold enough books that he has the clout to veto changes made by editors or SOMETHING, bc i feel like? he's gotten worse?? and more unfiltered?? that or something happened and he's like. even more religious than before or something idk
like fablehaven was just kinda generic/bland fantasy with some fun ideas for magic items/powers/one sentence character premises, with just a hint of sus Mormon ideology, and then Dragonwatch just went. Full Mormon.
but then there's somehow even more weirdly queer shit. like. he's repressing so hard he's approaching queer from the other side??
idk man i wish this deeply mediocre man's writing wasn't a formative piece of middle school reading, leading to me still giving more of a shit than i really should over questionable children's literature now

Truly reading fundamental academic literature is a humbling experience of intellectually mining for gold. Yes, past a certain point in academic life you'll feel like a whole lot of it is just dust, and then suddenly the author will hit you with a very enlightening passage that leaves you reeling a bit.
#So this book on the ethics of fiction#I have reached a chapter where he's discussing notions of the self and how those are portrayed in literature#and he elaborates on this tension or opposition between the individualist self and the social self#He's making a relatively detailed analysis of the former in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man#and it suddenly struck me that one could read Mr. Hale as nuanced criticism of this model#I have eyed before an article that argues that Gaskell's pluralism isn't relativistic in essence#Because her characters that grow all have beliefs they strongly hold onto#but more than that they are very willingly to express and put forward in public debate#whereas Mr Hale's dissension is silent and undefined and in the end he never puts those beliefs forward to challenge others#and thus his real impact in the Milton community is null or close to null#But now I'm also thinking about how Mr. Hale is an stubbornly isolationist character#he gets his doubts alone and won't reach out#he decides to leave Helstone and decides to move to Milton without consulting anyone#he conceives himself as a lonely victim of conscience rather than a champion of it#When his wife dies he decides he's going to stay put and not a thought is spared for Margaret#And somewhere in there there's a contrast with Frederick's conscience struggle#that is at its basis one rooted in justice as it reaches both self and others#and his life post decision is one that as sketchily as it is drawn is one of fruitfulness and engagement with others#vis a vis the sterility of Mr Hale's

I read all of Part 1 after it was already released, but reading Chainsaw Man Part 2 as each chapter is being published is a new and at times difficult experience. Like, sorry, I forgot what happened again. It’s been two weeks and I keep getting distracted by Barem’s tits.
