so maybe another devil in a new suit drabble 👉👈 maybe jk meeting oc parents or like more interactions w oc and jks parents/sister
[ read devil in a new suit ]
pairing.  jjk x f!reader.  rating.  pg-13.  tags.  mentions of coconut!kook dancing (and the whole reason i wrote this tbh), cute banter, idk.  just a lotta fluff, a lil bit of grinding, y’know.  wc. 2.7k.  beta reader.  none other than @hobi-gif.  i love you always!  author note.  oh look...  it’s me...  posting something...  after sixteen hundred years.  womp womp.  this truthfully didn’t go the way i planned it to but i hope you enjoy regardless!
Tumblr media
It really shouldn’t surprise you.  Frankly, it doesn’t.
But it is a little funny.
There are about six girls gathered in a gaggle around your boyfriend, all desperately vying for his attention as he presents a neatly gathered bouquet to his little sister.  Jisoo’s all smiles, completely over the moon with pride and riding that high as she rightfully should.  (She’d done incredibly well, closed out the showcase with a fluidity you could never even dream of.)  She doesn’t even notice her friends staring at her brother with hearts in their eyes, each one red in the face and not from exertion.
(That, or she doesn’t care.  Maybe she’s grown used to it - the whole having-a-heartthrob-for-a-brother thing.)
It’s actually quite cute, if only because you know Jungkook doesn’t have eyes for anyone but you.  Can feel it in how he keeps bouncing his gaze back towards you, dimple winking from deep within his cheek each time your eyes meet.  He’s like a child going back to his favourite toy, momentarily distracted by tittering laughter and his sister’s sunny smile but always coming back to you.  The knowledge warms you from the inside out, drags a satisfied smile across your lips.
You wonder whether he notices the attention or if it’s just another part of his life.  (You think he must know.  These college students don’t really hide it well, too handsy for their own good, years of growing up in semi-close proximity instilling a certain confidence in their motions.  That, and because Jungkook is quite possibly the least intimidating person you’ve ever met.)
“Thank you for coming!”  It’s Jisoo, flushed and excitable, round eyes as bright as her brother’s as she crosses to you.  This had been her moment - her time to shine - but you appreciate the effort she makes to include you, finding you within the crowd.  “I was a little nervous but…”  A shrug rolls her narrow shoulders, shakes her dark hair from its loose coil.
You’d seen her practice before this - watched the long videos she’d regularly send to Jungkook - but seeing her in real life motion was an entire league of its own.  Dancing was her calling, every bit of her made for it.  There was just something lyrical about the way she moved, how her hips rolled, limbs seemingly guided by the rhythm of the music.  A grace you’ve never had, even on your best day.
“You shouldn’t have been.”  You’re beaming right back at her, sisterly reassurance on your tongue.  “You were amazing.”
Whether she believes you or not - you think she does by how her cheeks grow ten sizes and her eyes are all but swallowed whole by the expression - she’s gracious, accepting the compliment with her blinding smile.  (She really was like Jungkook like that.)
“You guys should come to a class one day.”  By that, she means a class she helps teach every once in a while.  You’ve heard about it on more than one occasion, seen the choreography posted on Instagram and YouTube.
Still, you don’t expect that, brows shooting high.  Laughter filters past your teeth, springing off your tongue.  “I am not a dancer and I doubt your brother—”
Now it’s Jisoo’s turn to wear surprise like a neon sign, expression splitting with giggles of her own.  “Wait— have you not seen Kook dance?”  The way she says it is incredulous, Bambi eyes sparkling with what looks like mischief.
“No?”
Tumblr media
“Your sister told me something.”
You’ve never seen this particular brand of worry on his face, eyes even more comically wide than usual, whatever words he’d originally meant to speak dying on his tongue.  He looks like a literal deer caught in the headlights, one of his nicknames suddenly very apt.
“What did she say?  She likes to embarrass me.”  True.  Jisoo and Jungkook had a textbook sibling relationship, full of teasing and mockery and copious amounts of love.  “Whatever she said, don’t believe—”
“She said you used to dance.”
“Oh.”  Oh?  You hadn’t expected Jungkook to deflate so easily, relief flooding his features.  “Yeah, I did.  In university.”  He’s utterly unbothered by this knowledge, attention back on the soondubu jjigae he’d been shovelling into his mouth.  “I had some friends who were dancers, so it was good exercise.”
“I want to see.”
His answer is immediate, despite the heaping bite of rice and stew in his mouth.  “No.”
You whack him across the shoulder, startling him into clattering his spoon on the countertop.  It leaves a messy red streak across marble but you’re dragging his attention back to you with a firm glare, fingers cradled under his jaw.  “I want to see.”
Tumblr media
Talent apparently runs in the family, you realise halfway through the third video.  Jungkook moves with the same assured movements his sister does, with power and grace and a confidence that frankly baffles you.  He treats the practice room like a stage, running through the motions so fluidly you almost have trouble believing it’s your man on the screen.  (Not that he’s particularly ungraceful.  It’s just surprising, like watching a dog walk on its hind legs.)
“So, what happened?”  You say it so conversationally, innocently, with eyes that mimic his own.  From the corner of your periphery, your boyfriend shifts, hand flexing over your knee.  There’s the furrow between his brows, the subtle tension in his jaw.  Worry.
“What do you mean?”
Your own hand waves toward the screen, where the image of Jungkook from over half a decade ago sits paused.  “You were so…”  You’re not sure what you mean.  There are just so many options to describe the literal baby boy on the television.  Young?  Confident?  Round?  (You can’t get over his haircut, though you suppose you can’t hold it against him.)
Jungkook simply stares at you, waiting for you to find whatever words you want to use.  Despite the uncertainty that swims somewhere in the depths of his eyes, he’s endlessly patient.  Always so soft when it comes to you.
“You had a coconut head.”
Laughter explodes off his tongue, entire face screwing up with amusement.  “Are you serious?”
“You did!”  Admittedly, the cut had somehow worked on him but it’s so reminiscent of grade school haircuts you can’t help but focus on it, too distracted by the glossy sheen to offer much else.  “I guess I get it, though.”
“What do you mean?  Everyone had that haircut—”
“In first grade, maybe.”  He sticks his tongue out at you then;  you scowl in response.
“What do you get?”  As always, he’s perceptive, immediately aware of your carefully knit brow, the thoughtfulness that fits itself around your teeth like gleaming white veneers and holds his attention hostage.  He’s grown used to it over the months you’ve been together - knows you cling tight to things with an iron grip, turn them over and over until you’ve made sense of it in that brain of yours.
“The crushes.”  You look affronted, almost appalled at the realisation.  He bursts out laughing, broad palm coming down upon your bare leg in a smack.  (He apologises profusely when you complain.)
“What’re you talking about?”
Your nose is wrinkled, velvet strands dislodged by the shake of your head.  “All your sister’s friends.  They’re in love with you.”  Jisoo had even agreed, laughed about it when you’d commented on it at the recital.  Something about them having grown up with Jungkook, obsessed with the image they’d retained of him since university.  “But you were a coconut.  You wore Timberlands and drop-crotch pants.  You weren’t even that cute.”  An exaggerated shudder slips over your shoulders.
“I was nineteen.”  As if that makes it better.  Your judgment doesn’t lessen, the lines running the bridge of your nose only deepening.
“Still.  Embarrassing.”
Your boyfriend truly is the best sport, rolling his eyes at you in the same instance he reaches for you, tugs you closer with broad palms, affection searing into your skin.  “Well, luckily, no more Timbs.  No more bowl cut.”  He nuzzles into the warmth of your neck, spreads your knees wide over his hips.  The sound of his laughter melts into your throat, dresses it in heat deposited by your breath.  “Are you jealous again?”
He doesn’t even get a verbal response to that.  Just a heavy glare and two hands squishing his cheeks.  “Absolutely not.”
Tumblr media
It comes up again in bed, your head on his chest, his hands on your hips.  He asks it quietly, conversationally, with a twinkle in his eye that makes you want to smother him with one of his many pillows.
“You’re sure you’re not jealous?”
“I’m not,”  you grit, paired with a roll of your eyes and a little snort from your nose.  You really aren’t.  Those girls are inconsequential, irrelevant.  They’ll never amount to what you are to him and that’s just a simple fact.  He’s yours - something he reminds you of day in and day out, both verbally and in action.
(You love him for it, appreciate it more than you can possibly begin to explain.  There’s a certain bliss to be found in the knowledge that you’re loved.  A warmth that rivals even that of the sun on the summer’s hottest day.)
“Then why’re you pouting?”  What he really means is why aren’t you smiling.  You don’t pout often - at least not in the same ways he does.
“I’m not,”  you repeat for what feels like the sixth time.
“Smile for me.”
You do the opposite - throwing your eyes in an exaggerated circle.  It earns you a pinch to the side, a tender sting blooming beneath ink-strewn fingers.
“Really—“  When he looks this earnest, it’s hard to deny him,  “you’re sure everything’s okay?”
At most, you can sigh perhaps overdramatically.  Fold your awkward limbs upon his and bury your face into the crook of his neck.  You’re not jealous of those girls, no.
You’re envious of his talent - the simple fact that Jeon Jungkook is, by all definitions, a golden boy.  God’s favourite, with his heart wrenching smile and easygoing charm and grace that seems almost surreal.  There’s not a single thing wrong with him - okay, except for his bad habit of never answering his phone and always messing up the top sheet and the fact that he absolutely never ever puts the cap back on the toothpaste tube - and it’s absurd.  Utterly, absolutely unfair.
But you can’t say that.
“Baby,”  he hums, threading the sound of his voice among your hair, tucking the soft syllables behind your ears.  “Talk to me.”
You relent - a little.  “You’re too good.”
“Too good?”  The depth of his laughter rumbles your bones, tickling your insides when it vibrates out of his chest.  “At what?”
A hand gesticulates wildly.  You’re not sure what it looks like, how close it is to hitting Jungkook in the face.  You’ve still got your face pressed to the warmth of his skin, greedily siphoning his sunny radiance with your cheek.   “Everything.”
Despite how he laughs - cackles, really, so adorable and high pitched it’s breathy - you know he knows what you’re talking about.  You’ve given him a hard time about it before.
“I’m not good at everything, ____.”
He’s somehow even good at making you believe you’re wrong.  That’s a feat in and of itself.
“Are too.”
“Are not.”
“Whatever!”  Whether he acknowledges it or not, he’s stupidly gifted.  Everyone and their - even his - mom knows it.  “Don’t believe me then.  I don’t care.”
“Then why’re you making that face?”  It’s almost comical that he’s calling you out for your expressions when he’s the king of funny faces, throwing his features into exaggerated (and adorable) masks.  (Maybe he’d just rubbed off on you?)
“I’m not,”  you huff, exasperated but not quite.  Still soft over his skin, velvet on silk.
“You’re so cute.”  Sometimes, you think he really is just a child - too happy with putting you on a pedestal and praying at your altar.  Devoting himself to you when you’re nothing but a bag of flesh and bone, dressed in designer fashion and wrapped up with a satin ribbon made from sarcasm and candor.  (Not that you mind.  Who would argue if they were offered such love?)  “I still think something’s wrong but…”
It’s a smart tactic.  He doesn’t press you for an answer, opting to let it linger between you.  Settle like bothersome lint until you offer it yourself.
When you relent - because you always do, unable to shut out the sunshine that practically pours out of him - you’re quieter.  Not shy, but bashful.  Uncertain in a way you very rarely are.  “I’ve always wanted to dance.”  So much so, you’d begged your parents to enroll you when you were younger.  Demanded lessons upon lessons - only to fail at all of them.  Rhythm simply didn’t exist anywhere in your body.
“Really?”
You’re pulled from your safe haven, shifted until your entire point of view is filled with Jungkook, his starry eyes and his fluffy fluffy hair.  There’s that look he sometimes gets - full of wonder and adoration - when he learns something new about you.  As if just the smallest tidbit of knowledge opens up a whole new world.
“Yes?”  You’re half regretting the admission.  He looks like he’s up to something, all the cogs in his head turning in perfect tandem.
“I’ll teach you.”
“Hard pass.”
Like a hot air balloon, he deflates, mouth rounding sweetly.  (If you didn’t know better, you’d assume the man was made of cotton candy, semi-sweet chocolate heart where the real organ should be.)  “Why not?”
“I do not dance.”  It’s nothing but a statement of fact, firm and unyielding.
The pout evolves, swings down into a frown that drags his eyebrows with it.  “You could dance.”
“No, baby—“  So you’re a little frustrated, all your childhood memories pricking beneath your skin.  “I do not dance.”
“Why?”  He’s upright now, tugging you with him as if you weigh nothing.  His way of turning the conversation serious, pulling you from the warmth and comfort of the bedsheets to this.  (He’s still holding you, hooking his big broad hands over your hips, so you don’t mind.)
“No rhythm.”  Unable to keep a beat.  Two left feet.  The list could go on and on, according to your ballet instructor.
“Not true.”
Your brow quirks, mirrored by his as if in challenge.  You almost swat at him - so close your hand twitches on his shoulder.  “Very true.”
(Why does this conversation feel so familiar?  It’s déjà vu.)
“Is not.”  Your boyfriend seems insistent, as if he knows better than you.  (He doesn’t.)  Stares up at you with those pretty eyes and has the audacity to grin when you roll your own, ready to rebuff him.
Because you’re in bed, the one place where you defer to him whether you like it or not.
(You do like it, though.  Love it, in fact.  Just like you love him.)
“You’re graceful,”  he hums, bridging the gap between you with a forward roll of his shoulders.  “You’ve got rhythm.”  The hand on your hip grows firm, guides your knees to spread wide on either side of him.  With each brush of his lips - tender little brushes, endlessly sweet and reassuring - he pushes and pulls, dragging you across his lap.  “You can do anything you want.”
You’ve almost forgotten the topic of conversation, preoccupied by how he guides you in languid circles.  How the cotton of his boxer briefs feels against the sensitive inside of your thighs.  The weight that grows between your legs and nudges indelicately against the soft fabric of your thong.
All part of his plan, of course.
“Your body’s the most beautiful thing in the world, ____.”
When he looks at you like this, you think he might be right.  You’d believe it if he kept saying it, sparking desire through your limbs until they’re jellied and loose.
(How he sees right through you - cuts straight to the core of your insecurity - you’re not sure.  It feels almost like a superpower, something unquantifiable, unbelievable.  He’s too good for you, always.  So kind and loving, pressing his belief in the form of his mouth, the tender edge of his teeth when he kisses you slow slow slow.)
“You’re perfect just the way you are.”

Are you still there?
  /Part 7/
Tumblr media
I am hot, I am sweaty, and I am crammed into a small cot surrounded by equally sweaty men. It was the 6th of September, and we had just boarded the Great Samaria a few hours ago. We were now on a journey to Europe.
How they managed to jam us into this ship, I have no clue. It isn’t like there is 20 men over the capacity of this ship. No, this ship was made for 1000 passengers and now there were 5000 men from the 506th shoved in. I could have made the choice and went to the officers and made my stay there, I want to be near the men.
“Joe, darling, your shoulders are like barn doors, I can’t fit”
Oh yes, as the passenger count was so high, the cots were shared by two soldiers. I was sharing with Joe. At first I also considered going to Skip, but then I came to a conclusion that I could stand Joe’s singing in this suppressed place, but listening to Skip talk non-stop would make me an irritable person. And I truly did not want to become that. These men are my companions and I want to treat the with the respect they deserve. I did not have the right to become rude even in these circumstances.
Also, if I was put too high, Bull would have to carry me around like a baby monkey.
“For God’s sake, just turn the other way”, Joe grunts as I try to maneuver myself without jostling the cot too much.
“Joe, please move”, I whine and try to push him. He rasps and looks at me teasing smile on his lips.
“you wanna continue trying, Bambi”, he teases. I scrunch my brows and pout. Why did he have to make this so difficult. Then I put on my most motherly glare. “Joseph Toye, this is not how you should behave”, I scold.
He chuckles once again, but proceeds to move over so I’m finally able to fit in next to him on the cot. It was a tight squeeze, both of us were on top of the bed springs, but we tried to be so that it’s the least uncomfortable. Physically and mentally.
“So you told Muck, huh?”, he whispers once we are in and he hears Skip talking while making his way around the ship. I nod as we both look at the cot above us. “You sure that was a good idea?”, he asks. I could hear in his voice that he didn’t doubt Skip personally, but he was just checking in.
I smile. “He has been good to me since I came here, He won’t betray me now. And it does feel good to let it out”, I tell. He nods.
“So, what do you think about going to Europe?”, he asks. I shrug. “I’m glad I’m here, maybe we can speed up the process of ending this war and Matias and dad can go back home”, I answer. Matias was my older brother. I think he is the reason I’m so fond of Skip and Luz, Matias was such a jokester too. It broke my heart to think of him out there somewhere, fighting for his life.
“I’m glad we’re going to Europe too. Hitler gets one of these right across the windpipe, Roosevelt changes Thanksgiving to Joe Toye Day and 10,000 a year for the rest of my fucking life”, he says in a much louder voice.
I look at him trying not to laugh. “Joe, I promise I’ll celebrate Joe Toye Day from now on even if you don’t succeed”, I manage to say without laughing.
“What if we don’t get to Europe, what if they send us to North Africa”, Smokey points out from above us.
The conversation doesn’t awfully concern me, till I hear these words: “ I like Winters, he is a good man. But when bullets start flying, I don’t know if I want a Quaker doing my fighting for me”
My head turns sharply up towards Bill’s bed. My blood starts running cold with the rage I’m feeling. He had the audacity to condemn someone by their religion and to add to that doubt MY husbands skills in combat.
“How do you know he’s a Quaker?”
“He ain’t Catholic”
I’m about to jump up and teach the boy some manners when, Joe apparently notices my open mouth and shoves my head under a blanket. And by shoving, I mean shoving. Nothing gentle about it. I can only imagine the looks people are throwing at us.
“Okay Bambi up we go” he then says and starts lifting me up, my head still covered. I can hear Liebgott and Bill still having a spat and am about to turn to go towards the noise, but Joe keeps me covered till we are away from the scene.
“You need some fresh air, you angry hedgehog, to he deck we go”, Joe says and pushes people around to make us way forward. He really saved me from making a mistake.
With Richard
The Boat was far from comfortable, that was the only thing Richard Winters would say to the circumstances at hand. Last time he had been this hot, was while running in full gear in Toccoa.
“They really filled this Troop ship to the brink”, Lewis says looking just as sweaty as his friend. “If I’m going to be this hot, I’d rather have 5000 ladies here. At least there would be something to look at”, Nix says.
“Yeah, and by the time you’d make it to your destination they’d have eaten you alive, after finding out about Kathy”, Dick teases. Keeping your mind light in situations like this was the key to keeping your head together. His friend had his own lightness hidden in Dick’s footlocker.
Lewis let’s out his trademark chuckle. “Easy for you to say”, he snarks back. Dick knows exactly what he means. It was easy for Dick to judge other men for seeking affection because his own wife was there.
Dick only looks at his friend with a dry look and they remain silent for a while.
“Never thought this day would actually come, of course I knew it was coming, but hell we’ve come a long way”, Nix says and takes a swig from his flask. Dick lets out a small huff. It really was a miracle that Sobel hadn’t found some way to get rid off them.
“You think we can make it Nix, back home I mean”, Dick asks thoughtfully and plays with his fingers. It was a curious question, not one of sadness or fear.
“That’s not for us to decide, but hey I’ll drink to the thought of seeing your children some day”; he says raising his flask in what was supposed to be a happy remark, but when he sees Dick’s face, all the happiness goes away.
He furrows his brows and looks at his friend more closely. “You okay Dick?”, he asks while still studying his now pale friend. Dick just continues looking ahead like he was not there at all.
“Yeah, Nix, I’m okay”, he finally whispers and they drop the topic replacing it  with silence.
Sonja / Day 3 on the Samaria/
“Better out than in, there we go”, George says as he brushes some of my hair back. I had been throwing up for the last two hours. I wasn’t sure was it the sea or the smell of the fish soup that made me so nauseous.
“I fe- ugh”, I puke again in the middle of my sentence. I was not the only one throwing up, no. But I felt very embarrassed to be in this situation. I was a nurse, not a patient.
Suddenly a pounding of boots is heard and I feel someone place themselves on the other side of me. “There we go, a Hershey bar for the lady. Got it from Winters, tried scrounging and he was kind enough to offer when he passed”, Skip says as he opens the wrapper for me.
And what I can take from his story is that, that he went to tell Richard I’m unwell and Richard gave him the bar.
“Thank you”, I whisper and take the piece Skip snaps me. Luz takes the bucket from my hands and gives water to rinse my mouth.  “For a small lady, you sure puke your guts out like a grown man”, Luz teases.
“Shut up, I’m only three inches shorter than you”, I grumble and lean against him while savoring the chocolate to get the taste of vomit out. He only chuckles and makes a mocking “UGH” noise.
“Thank you boys for getting me out, I thought Joe was going to kill me”,I giggle softly. They both huff in laughter. “I mean you did puke on his chest”, Skip points out. I grimace, that I sure did. His chest and neck where running with fish soup after I retched on him.
“Someone get her a bucket, fucking hell, if someone isn’t gonna help her, Imma kill every fucking one of you”
“Skip, go get us some cards, I don’t think she can handle the sweat level yet”, George says as he strokes my back, as I gag again a little.
How long was I going to be stuck on this boat.
----------------------
The night was awful, I felt sickly and I noticed that Joe was turning more than usual, probably because of the back pain. We were lucky enough to fit on the cot so that we could both sleep in it, but nothing seemed to get me catch sleep. I was afraid of throwing up again.
“Nurse”, I hear a whisper. I jump and look up. Even in the dim lighting I can recognize my husband. I carefully stand without jostling Joe too much, and gently put the blanket on him again, after raising it up a little to get a little cool air on him.
“Yes sir?”,I ask professionally as I stand before Richard. He just nods his head towards the deck.
As we make it to the deck we quickly and quietly find a corner with no one sleeping in it. He takes a look around and has a seat. Before taking something out from his pocket: chocolate.
“Richard, you don’t have a sweet tooth, how do you have all these”;I ask looking at him oddly.
“I got this from Nix, he was willing to sacrifice it for I quote ‘holy business’“, I giggle at my husbands expression as he quotes Lewis. I take the bar from him and put it next to me. I honestly felt too sickly to eat it now.
I look at Dick biting my lip. He seems to notice the softness in my gaze as he utters a gentle “come here”, and gently guides me to lay my upper body onto his legs.
“Don’t worry, darling. I can keep watch, and if they ask more, I can say that I was just looking out for you as your officer”, he soothes and rubs his hand along my arms. Which feels amazing on my sore muscles.
“I think it’s time to tell the men soon anyway. They need to get used to the idea before we jump, and I think that they know you well enough to not judge you”, he then brings up. I nod against his leg, this living in secrecy was starting to become more and more difficult.
I then squeeze my eyes shut as nausea takes over me. “Richie I think I might puke”,I whimper. I always got very stressed when I had nausea, and sensitive. “I don’t wanna puke on you”,I say and try to rise, but in all honestly rising just made it worse.
Richard guides me back gently. “If you puke on me, then you do. Don’t worry about that. Let’s just get you comfortable”
----------------------
On the 15th of September we finally made it to Liverpool. I was still quite pale after the ride. Eating had really become a task, and without food, you lose strength. But with the threats from Joe and gentle urging from Carwood Lipton, I was able to get food down.
“You feelin’ good ma’am?”, comes a familiar Arkansas drawl as I give a happy sigh to be on the steady ground. I chuckle “Aye, sir, better than ever”, I say teasingly. He mock salutes me and we start walking for our shelter for the night.
I walk on Joe’s side keeping a firm hold of his sleeve as I had been told by Lip.
“We don’t want you getting lost, you are harder to find than most of us”
At first I had wanted to tell him that I am a grown woman with military training, but his truly caring gaze changed my plans.  If I could express in words, how thankful I was for that mans care I would shout it at his too humble face. Okay, these boys are really rubbing off on me, I wouldn’t shout, maybe gently lecture.
Tomorrow we would be going to our final destination.
-------------------
Aldbourne was vastly different from all the places I’ve had my training and from what the men told me, it was also very different to them. We were in the middle of a village! We could actually see other people.
“Come on Sonja, please, please please”, Skip was begging on his knees. We had gotten our passes to go to Swindon for a Saturday night dance this weekend. The boys were all excited about being able to go and actually getting the passes this time.
“Skip, you know I get uncomfortable with many people, also it’ll be nice to have some time alone”, I try to reason as he keeps pushing my skirt and blouse towards my hands.
He looks at me with his green puppy eyes. “please, Bambi, for me, Joe is coming too. Aren’t you? Hear that Joe is there too”, he begs. I sigh and look at both of them.
“Okay, but when I say want to come back, I will”, I say pointing at him.
“Yes!!”
-------------------
I didn’t put on my skirt and blouse, instead I took out my light blue swing dress and let my hair down. It was nice to feel girly again, and actually have a reason to get dolled up. That was not the best part, the best part was actually putting my wedding ring onto my finger. I gave a small kiss to my cross and said a little prayer of gratitude before going to the boys.
The boys were happy to have me, their lady with them.
“Your husband is one lucky bastard”. George had said when he saw me. Bull had even blushed when I gave him a kiss on the cheek as thanks for helping me with my jacket.
All the girls in the dance were dolled up too. I found the music in there absolutely delightful. It might have not been completely in my taste, but I appreciate it nonetheless. Also the sound of shoes clapping against the floor was beautifully relaxing.
“Would my lady like to dance?”, Skip asks bowing at the waste. I shake my head at his antics but take his hand none the less. And boy did I make a mistake. I was tosses from Skip to George, to Bull, to Joe, to Don (who mind you, was an excellent dancer!) and god knows who. The Easy boys really decided to hit the floor.
Once I was able to make a run from them, I found Joe drinking a beer at one of the tables. “You having fun?”; he asks and takes a long sip. I nod and smile widely.
“I can’t remember the last time I’ve been able to dance so much! But I do wonder”, I bite my lip. “Am I a bad person to be here, without Richard?”; I whisper.
Joe shakes his head. “You’re too good for this world. There ain’t nothing wrong with you being here. He trusts you and you trust him. And hell, you were giggling like a school girl when you realized you still had time to go to him after this. You aren’t committing any sin”, he soothes with a little teasing making me blush.
Who can blame me, I just want to grab my Robert Burns poems and go read with Richards head on my lap. Was that really too much to ask for? He was my husband.
We continue our conversation, with me sipping a cup of water, until I hear a similar interruption as in the boat.
Bill and Skinny make it to our table chatting. “He might be a good man, but Quakers aren’t meant for this shit” My patience had been running thin with these comments for so long and now my patience was all run out.
“He is not a Quaker”, I snap. Bill turns to me with an odd look on his face.
“And how do you know that Bambi”, many of the Easy men were now near our table from hearing my raised voice.
I don’t know what made it come out of my mouth, but this did anyway: “If my husband was a Quaker I think I’d be the one who knows that and not you”
I quickly realize what I said and plant my palm against my face, trying to remember how to breathe. I hear Joe sigh from next to me: “Well, now you fucking said it”

Self restraint was surprisingly one of Angel’s stronger suits despite what he lets people to believe. Growing up gay in an Roman Catholic mob family in a time where boys were sent for “medical treatment” for looking at other boys with a little too much interest would do that to a guy.
So when he felt Alastor’s fingers worm their way under his hand during family movie night, he didn’t react immediately.
It all started when Charlie discovered Disney via a patron who had recently died and was sent straight to the hotel by her mother of all people, with a note that said There was a mix up in processing, she doesn’t belong here. Take care of her until your Uncle Gabriel can come get her New Years.
Charlie had nearly detonated fireworks inside the hotel in her excitement because an honest to grandfather heaven bound had been blessedly dropped onto her lap. It would be an absolute shame if she didn’t take advantage and pick her brain to see how she earned her halo so that she could apply it to her other patrons, specifically Angel Dust who seemed to drift further and further away from Heaven’s light.
Vaggie had told her, not for the first time either, that Angel was a lost cause but never let it be said that the Princess of Hell was not tenacious. Nor was she one to give up on her friends.  He didn’t make it easy though...What with the turf wars and drugs and booze and constant sex and...yeah.
But here in her hands, she had a way to redemption and step one was obviously-
“I remember this studio,” said Angel when the opening jingle revealed the Disney Castle. He munched on some popcorn and nodded, “I remember watching Snow White, Pinocchio, and Bambi. Heh, Pinocchio scared the shit outa me. Growin up, pops told me that boys who were bad became jackasses .”
“Explains you,” muttered Vaggie into her mug of coco, nearly spilling it when Angel retaliated by throwing popcorn at her, “Hey!”
They had worked their way backwards, starting with the classics much to Alastor’s delight. Having grown up poor, all he had was a single fairytale book that was literally falling apart. Then he had discovered radio and then developed his fascination with murdering and...Well, he was glad to have this opportunity to experience fairytales again. Angel  in particular liked Al’s eagerness for family movie night. It was cute.
That is until tonight when they were watching Bambi and they were at the part where hunters had killed the fawn’s mom. Charlie gasped from across them, turning to Vaggie for some explanation as to why this was in a children’s film. Husk sighed heavily and took a long drink from his beer bottle, Niffty quickly getting up to bring more drinks but Angel didn’t miss how she was wiping at her eye.
He glanced over at Alastor, whose eyes had become dials, and twisted his hand so that their fingers laced together, gently squeezing them and slowly raising his upper arm out to coax his friend to curl up next to him. It was a long shot that Al would allow this despite their friendship but to his surprise, Alastor fell into place and reached out his other hand to hold Angel’s lower left one.
Bambi had hit too close to home for Alastor and they needed a brief intermission shortly after Bambi’s dad took him in.
Water splashed on face and tears were wiped away. Snacks and drinks were replenished and they all made themselves comfortable again.
To Angel’s delight and horror, Alastor dragged a blanket over and made himself comfortable again tucked under Angel’s arm with a pleased smile, tail softly  thumping against the couch when Angel rested his head on his.
Spring time in the movie lifted everyone’s moods from Charlie squealing at the cute little skunks, to Alastor’s ears perking up when Bambi fought for his doe. He felt Angel’s breath come out in a snort but didn’t question it until the movie was over and it was just them two picking up the living room.
Angel shrugged, “I don’t know, guess the love dovey stuff was a bit much.”
“I thought you like lovey dovey stuff.” Alastor tossed the folded blankets back into their basket.
“I do. It’s just that I don’t believe that it happens the way it happens in movies. It’s unrealistic if you ask me.”
“Yes, exactly! I feel the same way. Though I suppose with moving pictures, time is of the essence what with their limited time frame to tell their story.” Alastor helped Angel take the dirty cups and bowls back to the kitchen, putting the dishes into the sink and rolling up his sleeves while Angel put away the left over snacks.
“I take it that you aren’t a fan of the whole love at first sight trope either then, huh?”
Alastor grin widened, “Not at all, my dear. Though to be fair, I  can’t say that I’m a fan of love either. Besides my mother, I never put much thought into loving someone else, never mind romantically.”
Angel’s heart ached at the deer’s words but he nodded anyway, “Yeah. Love is too messy anyway.” It had a nasty habit of making you see things that weren’t there. Of course Al didn’t feel the same way. Him cuddling and holding Angel’s hand didn’t mean anything. He was just cold and Bambi’s mom dying would’ve made anyone seek comfort in a friend.
“And requires far too much work,” agreed Alastor, his heart breaking at Angel’s dismissive words. But the work wasn’t as off putting to him as he thought. Charlie and Vaggie had their moments but months of being a shadow on the wall during their quarrels served to teach him that one disagreement didn’t have to mean the end of a relationship. If anything, working through it could make it stronger.
He felt Angel move next to him to dry the clean dishes. Alastor glanced at him from the corner of his eye, “Have you ever experienced...that is to say, have you ever been in love?”
Angel didn’t slow his methodological movements as he nodded.
“Oh.”
It had been almost silent but Angel heard it. He put the dishes away and waited for Al to finish washing the last few mugs, leaning an elbow on the counter and resting his cheek on his fist, “Have you?”
“No.”
“Hm.”
“Indeed.” Alastor wondered why he even bothered indulging in his confusing thoughts. The owl had described what Angel made him feel down to walking on damn air. Only thing it had gotten wrong was it hadn’t been as quickly as it had been with Bambi or Thumper, or Flower. It had been after Angel had decreased his advances and increased his willingness to simply chat with him well into the evening. How he didn’t blink twice when he’d made his famous gumbo with meat from his hunt or judged him he had walked on him snacking on fingers like they had been buffalo wings one night. As a matter of a fact, Angel had taken his cannibalism without fuss at all though Alastor chalked that up with Angel being a predator demon himself.
Then it had been the way Angel carried himself, even when he was ‘on the clock’. What Alastor had once seen as vulgar promiscuity, he now saw as hunting tactics. And if Angel had fun during his means to an end well more power to him. It was when he was off the clock, though, that Alastor found him the most endearing. When he was playing with Fat Nuggets. When he was having girl time with Niffy and Charlie, playing poker with Husk, and watching documentaries with Vaggie.
It was the way Angel smiled when he did all of this, content and relaxed, that made Alastor’s head spin and heart flutter. The way he cried if the documentary was about nature and a cute animal died. It was the way Angel was weak by demon standards but strong by human. By his standards.
“Al?”
Alastor jumped when Angel gently shook him by the shoulder with a worried frown. He felt himself smile, “Yes, darling?”
“I said that the mugs are clean enough. Give’em here so we can go to bed.” Angel took the squeaky clean mugs from Alastor and quickly dried them, putting them in their cupboard and tossing the dish towel into a basket next to the sink.
The two demons stared at each other, waiting for something neither knew the other wanted.
Sighing, Angel shook his head and offered a small smile, “Alright, I’m gonna go hit the hay. See ya tomorrow, Smiles.”
“Sweet dreams, dear.” As Al watched Angel retreat, a moment of foolish bravery overcame him and he called out to him, “Angel!”
Angel paused at the door and glanced over his shoulder, “Yeah?” He watched as Alastor summoned his microphone to fiddle with more than anything, something he’d noticed the deer did when he was nervous. Strangely enough, Alastor only did that when they were alone. It was cute.
Having found the words he wanted, or gathered his courage, Alastor asked in an unfiltered voice, “Do ya think...Do y’think you could fall’n love again?”
Self restraint was surprisingly on of Angel’s stronger suits, despite what he led people to believe. And now, he was happy it was because without it, he would’ve overstepped Alastor’s personal space and ruin whatever it was that was happening right now. Instead he lowered his lids and smiled warmly, “Yeah, I could. What about you? Think you could give being twitterpated a shot?”
“I won’t act a fool like those little animals from the picture, will I?”
“Would you care?” Angel asked as he reached out a hand.
Alastor thought about it for a second but answered Angel’s smile with a warmer one of his own and laced his fingers with Angel’s, allowing the spider to lead him upstairs to bed, “Not at all.”

A Tale of Ink and Venom

If you’d like to be tagged for the upcoming chapters lemme know!
Also another big thank you to @leo-writer for reading beforehand. I super, super appreciate it and appreciate YOU!
Chapter Two: Heart to Heart
“No no no, I’m so late!”
I shot out of my room like a bat out of hell, a jumble of keys in one hand and helmet in the other as I took to the morning bustle of the college sidewalks. Outside the scenery was a mixture of many things; remnants of winter slush that spring was finally beginning squash with a faint warm breeze. Not to mention the familiar scent of Brooklynn streets containing the disappointing waft of piss and alcohol it was so well known for. Or maybe I had just grown used to it in the year I had been here.
I stopped abruptly at a covered up bundle and ripped the cover off hastily to reveal a shiny black Vespa beneath and beamed. Her name was Queen of the Night, Queenie for short, and what she lacked in speed she made up for in aesthetic. She was the last thing my parents had gifted me before I had started college. A way for them to feel at ease about me being on my own, or so they said. I think they just didn’t want me to use door dash on every little thing I needed at all hours of the night. Regardless, she was my pride, my joy, and I was finally able to ride her again after the harsh winter months had kept us separated for so long.
My thoughts wandered as I got my belongings situated to head to work. About Bambi’s words, the news article, but also the strange group text Bambi’s sister had sent out as I had left:
‘There’s a big bad out. Stay safe.’
I wish I could say that wasn’t a normal occurrence for her, but Benni Banks had a knack of sending things just ominous enough to make you extremely suspicious of whatever she was saying. The only thing more suspicious was when she would walk with a startling pace out of our dorm with laptop in arms saying ‘This is fine, this is absolutely fine ’ on repeat. If you knew Benni like we did that usually meant one of her cockamamie hacking attempts had backfired and things were certainly not fine. Despite this, we loved her, even down to the cryptic warnings she sent us while submitting to her insomnia sleeping habits that left us more curious than cautious.
A villain like that could have meant anything. Hell, we had just seen Lizardman take on the town before he stopped on his own accord. A malfunction with the machine he used to keep himself human, or something to that degree. And not a single hero came to help during that situation. I slumped forward at a red light and sighed. Despite New York being a hot zone for superheroes and villains alike, it was apparent that the villains were just becoming too much for them to handle. But that was something I couldn’t begin to think about, because I had arrived to work and there were more pressing matters at hand.
Like how I was about to be reamed for being 20 minutes late.
I stopped in front of an ordinary-looking business building not far off from the campus itself and removed my helmet. My hair fell in loose lazy curls around my face as the braid I had made was all but destroyed. Flecks of blue and black melded over my face as I tried to hastily tie it back into its original style, but failed miserably. Giving up I shoved my hands into my hoodie pockets, listening to the leather of my gloves squeak with discomfort before fishing out a flashy looking access card for the entrance. On one hand, I didn't know why I or anyone else needed one of these. Most of the sections inside of the building were offices doing god knows what. On the other hand, the lower levels were a different story entirely. I waited 3 seconds for the light to flash green before I stepped in, immediately greeted by a security guard I knew simply as Barry who nodded curtly to me as I took to the steps nearby.
“A little late today, Miss Knight,” I heard him chuckle, fading away as I entered the basement. This was where all of the action happened, a steady hum of electronics and murmurs of people lost in conversations of studies they were working on. Some made brief pleasantries with me as I zipped through the small groups of lab coats huddling to discuss, while others seemed to eye me with disapproval.
They didn’t matter though. The only person that mattered currently stood hunched over one of many counters in his lab as I watched from the glass window that separated us. I pressed my face against the glass to try to get his attention but he ignored me, making my nerves rise as I stepped within the sliding doors and opened my mouth to apologize.
“You’re late, Knight,”
I closed my mouth and puffed my cheeks out. He always had a knack of catching me off guard.
His name was Professor H. D. Renato, a man who I suspect would not reveal his initials to anyone until he was on his death bed. Even then that was being generous. He was a man of science and cleanliness, and the two coincided together nicely in his lab that he kept in pristine shape. It was ordinary for the most part. No colorful beakers, no boiling concoctions of evil ooze to take over the world with. Just a man with incredible dreads hunched over his desk studying something intensely.
I don’t know how our strange relationship came to be, especially when our first encounter involved him walking in on me attempting to delete student debts with my powers. I was lucky enough at the time that despite the criminal act I was committing he was intrigued by my mutation and wanted to work with me on the promise that I never try a stunt like that again. I was even luckier that I had somehow gotten a job out of it instead of making a call to my parents from the Deans office explaining how I got kicked out of college for trying to show up Robin Hood.
He now turned as if sensing me studying him and folded his arms, dark eyes studying me back with amusement.
“What’s your excuse this time then?”
“Would you believe traffic?”
“I would not,”
“How about saving kids from a burning building?”
“Try again,”
“Fine,” I rolled my eyes, setting my bag down on one of the empty tables taking up the majority of the room. “I got side-tracked talking to the girls,” I admitted before joining him behind his desk to get a glimpse of what his attention had been so caught up on. “Seems I’m not the only one distracted today though, huh?”
“You know me, I always have to see what fresh hell is destroying Brooklynn,” he muttered before turning the laptop to me. “You’ve seen it already, haven’t you?”
“Oh, no. Benni mentioned it before I got here but...” I whispered as I joined him in looking at the screen. The shots of whoever, or whatever it was were blurry. Though, it wasn’t hard to see the giant black humanoid looking creature completely demolishing a group of police vehicles like they were children's toys before the reporter I had seen so many times appeared on the screen. She had the same tense face on as always. Not that I could blame her, I’d look the same way if I were placed in a somewhat dangerous situation like this. And yet, she spoke in a strangely calm tone to give what little information she had on the matter:
" ...suspect is assumed to be a high-level threat that was one of few said to be lost in the recent events of the Ice Box criminal transfer after destruction hit- "
"Hang on, that was months ago. They still haven't found the convicts that escaped?" I asked in surprise. He shook his head in response.
"Apparently not. The majority were assumed dead at the scene of the crime but…” he motioned to the screen again as we watched another brief blurry clip of the creature climb onto one of the surrounding buildings as heavily armored police got involved.
I whistled in response.
“I really don’t think you should go out on deliveries today, Nina…” he admitted after a short pause as he turned to me, folding his arms like he always did when faced with a tough subject. I could only roll my eyes in response.
“Don’t think I’m capable of holding my own?”
“Really? You’re asking me this in a ‘Hangover Hoodie’?”
“Huh?” I asked with a confused frown but realized all too quickly what he was talking about. In my hurry to leave this morning I had shoved a blind hand into my wardrobe and picked out whatever hoodie I could find. Renato now stared at me with disappointed disapproval and sighed. It was no wonder his peers looked at me how they did now.
“I have always had the utmost faith in you, it’s your health I’m concerned about. You know this,”
“How could I forget when that’s all anyone ever talks about?” I answered shortly, watching his expression quickly fade to guilt. I knew he hadn’t meant anything by it, after all, it wasn’t his fault that my body was the frail shell of what it used to be. Like I said, I tried the vigilante lifestyle once. It hit me harder than what I was ready for and now I paid the price.
The result left me unable to use my powers without intense strain on my body, and a group of family and friends treating me like I was made of glass as a result.
He hovered his hand over my shoulder before reluctantly pulling back. Renato might have been a genius but his social cues were lacking in the compassion department. Or any social department in general for that matter. Instead, he did what he did every time there was an awkward situation and began furiously cleaning his glasses that had been sitting neatly on top of his head.
“I just...you know I worry. And with your parent's trusting me-”
“What they don’t know won’t hurt them. But also, I’m almost 24, dude. Avoir une certaine foi,” I added with an innocent smile. He was not so taken with it
“You know I don’t speak French,”
“Have some faith,”
“That’s easy for you to say, you don’t have to be the one to deliver the news if something happens,” he responded shortly, striking my own guilt in response. Renato, despite his eagerness to take me under his wing, was still a cautious man. So cautious in fact that he had contacted my parents before solidifying his offer to work with me. They weren’t bad people, probably the farthest thing from that, they were just so overprotective. I couldn’t blame them after the chaotic introduction into parenthood I had given them, especially after being the first mutant in our family. There was just a point where it was too much.
There was a heavy silence between us as we both struggled to find something to say before he sighed and directed my gaze to the packages resting beside the counter.
“Alright, I’m trusting you with this, Nina. You’re lucky we have such a backlog to get through otherwise-”
“Otherwise you wouldn’t allow this, yes I know,” I called as I carefully scooped the boxes up and inspected them curiously as if the blank outer packaging would reveal their secrets.
They did not.
“Be careful with those. I put fragile on there for a reason,” he added as he tapped the large black font with a stern look. As part of his side job he was always cooking up interesting concoctions for his clients, considered the mutant savant by many because of how serious he was to learn how to help us function in everyday society. I had never seen a regular human so dedicated to helping our cause and I wasn’t about to make him regret hiring me to help with it.
Especially when it meant one day he could help me be myself again.
I scoffed at his words and tiptoed carefully to the exit to avoid more of his harping while I could. “I got it, I got it. Shoot me the addresses?”
“Already in your phone, make sure you get all of the signatures this time, Knight.”
“Yes, dad,” I mocked before shuffling out of the lab, careful to avoid any collisions with anyone out in the hall. Barry held the door open for me like he did every time I came up packed to the gills with boxes and we shared our usual polite nod to one another.
Ten frustrating minutes of getting everything bundled up tight on Queenie and I was finally off to do the real work of the day.
-
Being a courier was a fairly easy job. Renato excelled in helping mutants with noticeable mutations by creating temporary serums and little do-dads to aid in his search of making us feel more welcomed in society. Since the clients themselves didn’t usually want to be seen by people other than their kind it was often a quick in and out job. The hardest part was getting to them. Renato may have been science savvy but where he excelled in knowledge he lacked in direction, and it made me ever so thankful for GPS as I rounded the same corner I had been through multiple times in the last 15 minutes.
Thank god these weren’t timed deliveries.
Most of the stops weren’t an issue, usually consisting of an out of the ordinary mutant that just needed some basic supplies. My favorite was a man with red skin and facial hair that rivaled Jack Sparrows. He was charming and straight to the point, and yet his tips were always more than accommodating. His name started with an A but the scribbled signature never revealed the rest.
Others however were... strange. Some left specific instructions in order for me to get confirmation signatures; knock two times on the door to wait for someone to knock back, more than a few required me to face the other way so I couldn’t see them but when I looked back the papers were signed, sometimes tip attached, sometimes other odds and ends. I once received a large quill-like spike as a tip for my efforts. It still sat on my desk to this day.
Before I knew it my final client had come and I rode lazily in the familiar streets of Brooklyn to find the location. His was always my favorite to go to, settled in a small suburb area with people that always seemed to be out and enjoying life without a care in the world. I parked in a vacant area up the street and started towards a cozy-looking home that had seen better days. Not that it was in bad shape, it was just old and in need of some serious case of TLC that its owner was unable to give.
I stopped at the sun stained red door and rang the buzzer once.
No response.
Twice.
Nothing.
“Mr. Lee?” I called, pressing my ear against the door to hear if he was making his way to answer. I was greeted with silence.
I began a hail mary of mashing the buzzer in a last desperate attempt until a soft chuckle interrupted me and I turned. An older man in dark shades sat at a bench nearby and waved to me, beckoning me towards him and I followed.
"Hey! Buongiorno!" he called merrily from his peaceful-looking seat and I laughed softly.
"That's Italian, Mr. Lee. But bonus points for trying,"
"Ah, can't win 'em all I suppose." he chuckled before patting the seat next to him and I obliged, holding his delivery patiently in hand before he smiled warmly and stared forward.
"Relax a little, something on your mind, kiddo? You seem tense!"
Mr. Lee always had a knack for sensing these types of things. He was one of Renato's oldest clients, and he wasn't even a mutant. Renato just enjoyed this old man's zest for life so much that he helped him with simple tasks and now the occasional french tutoring on the side that I gave him during my trips.
"Ah, no. I mean, kind of..."
"Go on then, I've got some time," he chuckled as he nudged me playfully.
I sighed sheepishly in response. I couldn’t exactly tell him my life story. He knew bits and pieces of it, but I was still on the fence about revealing my mutation. Instead, I tried to word it rather poorly, tugging at my gloved hands as I struggled to find proper words.
“I just...I want to be something more, y’know? I worked so hard for this...thing when I was younger and now I’m just this...this burnout of a courier wasting away at college!” I started, unable to control the flood of commentary that was spilling out. “I wanted to be like...like Spiderman! Or the Avengers! Something! I have a gift, my friends tell me every day that I have the means to overcome this... this fear of breaking myself again but I know deep down my body can’t take it...that I can’t be this person they think I can be. And now everyone’s just waiting for me to break again like I’m glass! I hate it!”
There was a heavy silence and I snapped out of my stupor, now standing with hands held over my head in what was once frustration. I didn’t even know where all of it had come from. Like I said, Mr. Lee had a strange gift.
I shot them down sheepishly and took to sitting back to a quiet Mr. Lee who’s bushy white mustache seemed to wiggle with thought.
“I’m sorry…” I quietly apologized before he turned to me, brows wrinkling under his shades with a frown plastered on his face.
“Don’t you ever apologize for expressing yourself,” he ordered gently, resting a hand on my shoulder with a small squeeze. “Life is never completely without its challenges. But that’s what keeps it interesting.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah! Listen, kid. I think you should do what your heart is telling you to do, 'cause deep down it knows that you'll do the right thing.”
“You think so?"
“I know so. I've been in the industry long enough to know a hero when I see one." he chuckled, a warm encouraging smile spreading across his face now. “You can't force these feelings out, kid. It’s got to come from inside of you,” he said while poking his chest proudly.
"Inside me..." I whispered, looking down at my hands in wonder. I knew what he meant, but what could someone like me feel when I wanted to do these things but couldn't? I knew in my heart of hearts what I wanted.
But would that be enough?
Before I could ponder more he stood and stretched his back, resting his weight on his cane. “Give it some thought, you’ve got time,”
“You’re leaving?”
“You’re not?” he teased before he pointed up to the sky and beamed. “I got a date with the universe soon, kiddo. Can’t keep her waiting.”
“Uh-huh…” was all I could muster as I stood and extended my hand out to him. I didn’t know if he was trying to be funny about his days being numbered or if he genuinely was expecting to travel the universe. Events in Brooklynn made it hard to shoot down either idea and Mr. Lee had a look so believable that for a second I actually believed him. “Well, if I don’t see you for a while...J'espère que tu trouveras ton aventure parmi les étoiles.”
“Oh?”
“It means ‘I hope you find your adventure among the stars,’”
“Ah! Mer...mer...merci!” he stammered before taking my hand in his and beaming at me, a feeling of pride radiating off of him at his accomplishment.
“You hang in there, kid. Your own adventure is going to find you soon enough! Remember,” he added, pointing to his chest once more before pointing to me. I nodded and smiled like some solemn promise had just been made between us and in some strange way, it had.
We said our goodbyes shortly after, a broken ‘au revoir’ from Mr. Lee as he sauntered into his home with delivery in hand while I took to Queenie with a little less weight on my shoulders. I was well over the time allotted for the drop-off, but I knew Renato would understand. It was why I always kept his deliveries for last after all, to have deep conversations that always kicked me back on track to the path I truly wanted to be on.
The path that would set things in motion not even an hour later.

Since several of you seemed interested in a sneak peek of my jdox vampire!AU, here you go! @punkrockzero @drelliotreidmd @john-dorkian @musicalgiraffeindistress :) fair warning: it’s still in very early stages and all this is subject to change (and seriously, this is just about all i have written so far so it’s not very exciting), but please feel free to give me any feedback you might have!!
JD had been looking forward to this night for a week and a half.  Somehow, the stars had aligned and he, Turk, Carla, and Elliot all managed to have the same evening off.  Life as an intern was proving to be far more hectic than JD had ever thought possible, and he knew Turk and Elliot were feeling just as burnt out.  Carla always had their backs, even if she and Elliot didn’t always get along, but what they all needed was a night where they could simply relax and be friends without the weight of the hospital resting on their shoulders.
It wasn’t until JD was three drinks in – he’d forced himself to stomach the beer Turk had picked up – that his inhibitions lowered and he felt comfortable asking the rest of the group about something he’d noticed over the last few months.
“Hey, Carla,” he said, an edge of laughter in his voice, which was most certainly the alcohol’s doing, “you’ve worked at the hospital for years now.  Have you ever noticed anything… off about Dr. Cox?”
“Off?” Carla repeated, her brows furrowing. “What do you mean?  I know he’s private and a little closed off, but –”
“Woman, please,” Turk snorted as he rolled his eyes. “That dude is the most closed off person I’ve ever seen.  Forget about how he talks to his patients, he can’t even relate to his coworkers, man!  I don’t know why you care so much about him.”
JD sighed and took another swig from his bottle. “Spare me the speech, Turk,” he grumbled.  “No, I meant like, have you ever noticed how sometimes his eyes go all dark and he, like, sucks on his gums like he’s anxious about something?  It’s like he’s seconds away from snapping, but he always pulls himself back.”
“If I didn’t know any better,” Elliot giggled, “I’d say someone spends a little too much time observing Dr. Cox, if you know what I mean.”
“What’s so funny?” JD asked, quickly growing annoyed with his friends.  “I’m being serious.”
“Bambi, it’s pretty obvious, I’m afraid,” Carla said between titters.  “You’ve got a crush on Dr. Cox.”
“I do not,” JD said, his voice rising.  “You guys, come on.  Just because I think he’s a brilliant doctor doesn’t automatically mean I have a crush on him.  I’m just naturally observant.”
“Whatever you say, dude,” Turk chuckles, making it clear that none of them are buying it.
JD grumbled under his breath and sank down in his chair, listening as the others changed the subject to a movie Turk and Carla had gone to see the previous week.  He was content to be left to his thoughts, which, as usual, drifted toward Perry. It wasn’t as though he’d kept a journal – though that was an idea – but over the last few months since he’d started at Sacred Heart, JD had been paying close attention to Perry.  He’d committed each occurrence to memory, each time Perry’s pupils dilated, his eyes growing dark with… well, JD wasn’t sure if it was anger or want or what it was, but if anyone else had paid enough attention to notice it, they’d think something was up, too. He didn’t know what to make of the way Perry ran his tongue over his teeth and his gums either, but it seemed to go hand-in-hand with the pupil dilation.  When those things happened, Perry seemed to have to step back from whatever situation he was in – JD had yet to find a common denominator between them, because there was usually such a flurry of activity, a code or a new admit, that JD couldn’t watch him for long enough.  The next chance he got to look at Perry would show him that the older doctor had composed himself and was back to his usual bristling self.
JD found it hard to concentrate for the rest of the evening.  He knew he should put more effort in, having organized their get-together in the first place, but it was their own fault for teasing him.  Even after Elliot and Carla left and Turk went to bed, JD couldn’t help but dwell on the fact that his friends thought he had the hots for his attending.  Was it true that he found Perry objectively attractive?  Well, yes, if he was being honest with himself.  Did he think Perry’d be phenomenal in the sack? Absolutely – if he’d thought about those things, which he most certainly had not.  At all. Not even in his dreams. Especially not that one time he’d woken up hard as a – never mind.  But that didn’t change the fact that he did not have a crush on Perry Cox.
JD rolled over in his bed and punched his pillow in frustration.  He doubted that even after bringing it up that any of his friends would care enough to observe Perry as much as he did.  Closing his eyes, he let sleep come for him, resolving to paying even closer attention to get to the bottom of Perry’s odd characteristics.  All his dreams were of his attending’s dark eyes.
JD stuck close to Perry’s side the next day, shrugging off the girls’ names and verbal abuse he’d grown so accustomed to.  If annoying Perry more than usual was a risk he had to take, well, he was damn sure going to take it.  He convinced himself – which didn’t take much effort – that he was shadowing Perry so closely because he was such a good doctor. It would be nice to learn from his process, see how his mind worked, even if his eyes didn’t darken at all that day. Plus, he enjoyed the older man’s company, even if the feeling wasn’t mutual.  He ignored Carla’s pointed looks throughout the day, and thankfully, he was just busy enough that she couldn’t pull him aside and tease him – or worse, do that thing where she seemed to be able to read his mind.
Late in the day, just as the sun had begun to set, a new admission was brought up to the ICU and Perry called JD over just as they wheeled in the patient.  It was a gunshot victim who’d barely been stabilized in the emergency room and was barely clinging to life.  JD could hardly recall a time when he’d seen more blood leaving a single person’s body. He stood back, letting Perry run the room as nurses fluttered about, abiding by Perry’s every word.  At first, JD thought only to use this as a learning experience, but then he realized Perry’s pupils looked blown out once again, leaving hardly any trace of the vivid blue irises around them.  Perry’s jaw was set tightly as he worked to stop the bleeding.
“Dammit, people, let’s get moving!” Perry shouted. “Carla, call the O.R. and get him in a room immediately.  If any of this bleeding’s internal, he’ll be a goner in no time flat.  You, I want three units of O-neg in here now.”
JD surged forward at Perry’s gesturing, snapping gloves onto his hands and applying pressure to the gunshot wound on the victim’s left side.  He didn’t think about Perry’s eyes, not when a patient’s life was hanging in the balance. He had his priorities, and as badly as he wanted to know what caused Perry’s symptoms, his patients came first. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the patient was stabilized and heading up to surgery.  JD was certain he’d need several transfusions, but now all they could do was hope that he’d pull through.
When he looked up from the mess in the room, rubber gloves and gauze and towels scattered all over the floor, Perry was across from him, sucking on his gums once again, his arms crossed in front of his chest.  “Dr. Cox, are you okay?” JD asked, his determination to get an answer for Perry’s behavior overruling his instinct for self-preservation.  “Your eyes…”
Perry’s dark eyes flashed dangerously, and for the first time, JD felt genuinely afraid of Perry.  “I know your little heart just goes pitter-patter when I’m around, Newbie, but if you don’t stop talking about my eyes, I’ll make damn sure you regret it.”
JD raised his gloved hands in surrender.  “Sorry,” he muttered, but watched curiously as Perry’s eyes darkened further.  His gaze seemed to be locked on JD’s gloves and he ran his tongue over his teeth. Intrigued, JD took a step toward Perry, his hands still raised.  “Is something wrong, Dr. Cox?” he pressed, watching as Perry held his ground, though he looked uncertain.
“Nothing’s wrong, Daphne,” Perry snapped, glaring down at JD.  “Get out of here and get yourself cleaned up.  You’ve still got a couple hours left.”
Slowly and deliberately, JD took his gloves off and tossed them in the hazardous waste bin just outside the door.  He watched Perry’s eyes go back to normal once he was out of sight, leaving JD no closer to understanding what was going on with his mentor.
That evening when JD got home, he went straight to his room, grateful to have the apartment to himself for once.  He fished around under his bed and emerged with a previously unused journal and opened it to the first page.  Part of him felt crazy, but he knew he wasn’t just imagining Perry’s symptoms.  With great care, he made a bullet-pointed list, beginning with Perry’s eyes.  It was the most noticeable symptom, at least for him, and the strangest.  Normal eyes didn’t just dilate, especially not under harsh fluorescent hospital lighting.  He described Perry’s eyes in great detail, noting that it seemed as though his pupils were widening rather than the icy blue of his eyes changing color. Following that, he transcribed the way Perry sucked on his teeth or run his tongue over his gums.  Of the symptoms JD had noticed, that one perplexed him the least.  Perhaps it was Perry’s way of calming himself during fast-paced trauma situations, or a nervous tick.  But then again, Perry never seemed so in-control as he did during codes, when he ran the room flawlessly.  JD debated adding Perry’s tense and terse attitude as a symptom, but Perry seemed to be that way all the time, so he scratched the idea.  Unable to think of anything else just then, JD closed the journal and shoved it between his mattress and box spring – it was one less thing he needed Turk to find and then tease him about.  Before drifting off to sleep, JD promised himself that he’d pay extra close attention to Perry in the following weeks.
Typical, JD thought to himself.  Turk had bailed on him again for some of his surgery buddies and a game of basketball. They’d agreed to meet up for drinks at the bar just down the street from the hospital, but now JD was sitting on a stool all by himself and there were hardly any attractive people there.  Turk had always been a decent wingman, at least when it came to the ladies, and guys seemed to like JD naturally without much effort on his part.  He’d been told on more than one occasion that it was those nice, full lips of his.  He giggled to himself as he took a sip of his appletini – his fourth one of the night – and wondered absently if Dr. Cox liked his lips.

45 Minutes Late pt. 2
Pairing: Namjoon x Reader
Word Count: 1200
Genre: Slow Burn, Fluff/Angst
Summary: You lived in an apartment building a few doors down from Kim Namjoon. Living as neighbors passing smiles and typical strangers greetings, was the norm until a chance encounter at a park changed everything.
Previous Chapter: 1
Wonderland
“I present to you… Deer creek,” she grins and gestures to the space around her. Although the rest of the park was still recovering from the cold winter, spring had come early at Deer Creek. The first green of the spring grew near the waters edge and fresh green leaves sprouted on nearby bushes; crystal clear water flowed over smooth pond pebbles. It looked like a place that would be on the cover of a foreign travel magazine.  He had no idea such a beautiful space could exist so close to the hustle and bustle of the city while still remaining unaffected by human development. It was as if all the pollution and waste that plagued the city did not exist at Deer Creek. He could hardly believed he’d walked past it so many times.
As he stared in awe three deer emerged from the treeline. It was amazing how timid they all seemed, given their incredibly intimidating size. He watched as they apprehensively crossed the stream. (Y/n) squatted, opening her back pack to reveal tons of carrots, apples, and grapes. Within seconds eleven other deer had surrounded them waiting for snacks. Although, the experience was incredible, being surrounded was really unnerving. All of his senses were telling him to run, however, (Y/n) didn’t seem phased at all. In fact, she was smiling brightly at the creatures and handing out carrots and apples.
Without realizing it, Namjoon had inched closer to (Y/n) for safety. The deer did not seem wary of her at all, however they distanced themselves from him and he couldn’t shake the feeling that they were all looking at him. “Is it just me or are they all looking at me?” She shook her head, “It’s not just you, they are looking at you. They’ve never seen you before, so they're curious. They don’t trust easily.” “And what happens if they don’t trust me?” “Hmm.” She pauses pondering the thought. “Bambi will probably eat you,” she says nonchalantly and resumes distributing snacks.
Namjoon flinched and looked over at the stag. The muscular build of the deer explained how it was able to lift it’s head up given the weight of it’s antlers. Up close he could see another set of antlers were entangled in the mess, one Bambi had presumably broken off of another stag during a fight. To Namjoon, it wasn’t farfetched to think the beast could eat him if he perceived him to be a threat.
Namjoon paled and gulped audibly.
“Gotcha!” She turns pointing finger guns at him and laughing. Namjoon breathed a sigh of relief, “Deer are vegetarians... for the most part.” You state continuing to distribute snacks.
“For the most part?!”
“Relax, you’ve got nothing to worry about. If they thought you were a threat they would’ve run away by now. Bambi is their pack leader, and since he has decided to trust you the rest have also bestowed upon you their trust as well. It’s not something to take lightly. Here,” she places a carrot stick in his hand and positions him toward the smallest deer, “This one’s Stella, she’s a full grown doe, but a runt so she’s tinier and not as intimidating as the others.”
He brought the carrot up to the doe’s mouth, it was strong for its size and Namjoon struggled to keep hold of the carrot.
“Hmm... Stella.” He mulled thought about what (Y/n) had said, as he looked into the eyes of the doe. These prey animals had decided to trust him, something that prey animals rarely do, and it kinda made him feel special.
“And you do this every Sunday?” He asked, getting the courage to pet Stella’s head. Her fur was much more coarse than he had imagined, but it didn’t make her any less cute.
“Yep, 9:00 sharp. Well except for today,” you reply.
“Amazing,” he had no idea such an outing could be experienced regularly completely for free, so close to the city. He was certain that if the entrepreneurs that lived in the city found out about this place, there would be a petting zoo cafe up within the week and a line out the door. He rolled his eyes at the very thought.
Before either of you realized it nearly two hours had passed and the deer had long since left. Leaving the two of you alone at the edge of the water.
“Do you mind not telling anyone about this spot? I don’t know how things work in Korea, but where I’m from Bambi is a hunter’s dream catch.” You ask, drawing spirals in the dirt with a twig.
“I won’t tell anyone, I can tell this place is important to you.”
She beams up at him, “Thanks I really appreciate it.” He couldn’t help but notice how pretty her smile was, and he found himself smiling back.
“Do you mind if I come with you, I mean to feed the deer.”
“Sure. It’s very tranquil here; a perfect place to write.”
“Write?” He raises an eyebrow, “You write?”
“No, but don’t you? You write songs right?” “Yea how’d you know?” His confusion was confusing you. “Are you not the Kim Namjoon that’s in BTS?” His eyes grew wide and his jaw dropped, “You know me?” He was actually shocked. She never said anything that made him inclined to believe she knew about his occupation at all.
“Is this guy for real?” You thought to yourself. “Surely he had to understand how well known he was at this point, right? Happy birthday posters were plastered all around town only a few months ago, his face was on a bus, and he was in a fried chicken commercial, all very public displays.”
“Namjoon-ssi, I live 3 doors down from you, not under a rock.”
He laughed and hid his face in embarrassment. “I just didn’t get the impression you knew.”
“Actually I’m a high school teacher and BTS is always a hot topic.”
The instant look of confusion/disbelief on his face spoke volumes. It was the same look other tenants of the building gave you when you said you were a high school teacher.
“And I know what your thinking, ‘how can a high school English teacher afford to live in the building, let alone one of the penthouse rooms?’”
Could she read his mind? He was thinking that, but he didn’t want to be rude and ask.
“The answer to your question is simple: I can’t.” He looked even more confused than before; the look on his face was truly meme level gold. “Or rather I wouldn’t be able to, but I was a nanny and tutor for an ambassador’s family for five years. They used to use the apartment as a vacation house, but they recently bought a bigger one so they gave this one to me as a thank you/farewell gift.”
The more they talked the more she interested him. Although her life was very different from his, it seemed just as eventful. He’d only seen people like her in movies and dramas, and it made him wonder how someone so free spirited could exist in real life.
