New semester, new me (I hope)...
I've had a lot of time to stare at my wall and re-evaluate the way that I tried to approach my first semester on the MRes course! But now I think it's time to do a bit of self reflection and to form an action plan for semester two so I don't burn out before graduation.
My experience of the first semester was challenging to say the least! Throughout my full life in academia, I've always struggled to stay on top of workloads and to start an assignment earlier than 24 hours before it's due date. At the start of semester one, I told myself that this would be the year for me: I'd convinced myself that a switch would flip in my brain and this year I would turn into the academic weapon that I was born to be. But it just didn't happen... Every submission in semester one was proceeded with a frantic rush up to the last second that was made ten times more stressful because of how much more difficult this work is to any I've had to submit in the past. Take the coding assignment as an example- I still have nightmares about how much my head hurt trying to finish that task on time!!
Whilst I've always been able to (somehow) walk out with good grades doing work in this way, it's just not a sustainable way to submit work at a Master's level. Not just because of the higher standard of work, but I've found 27 grey hairs coming through on my head since last November and I can't afford to dye my hair every week to cover them up. Joking aside, eventhough it makes me feel smart and accomplished to be able to write a 4000 word essay in 15 hours with no prior planning, I'm going to make sure that this is going to be the semester, albeit my final semester, that I become the academic success story that they write books about.
To give myself credit where it's due, I have constantly proven to myself that I can work under pressure. Pressure has always been my main motivator when it comes to submissions- I leave it until the pressure is at its peak to even begin thinking about writing. So at least now that when I get asked if I "deal well in high pressure situations" in a job interview, I know myself I'm not lying. But I have seen the negative consequences of this method on my mental health in the long run. I've constantly been in this cycle where I'll get mad at myself when I submit something because I know it's not my best work and this just can't continue.
When I think deeply about it, I think it is the constant passing grades that have stopped me from ever changing my ways. Why change a system that works, right? But I need to value my own mental health, stress levels and sleep more than I ever have. For me, it goes back to a classic theory I studied in A-Level Sociology- the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy. I have convinced myself that I am somebody who needs a looming deadline and peaked pressure and who cannot work on an assignment in small, manageable chunks so that is exactly the type of person that I have become. So from now, I'll take my whole academic career so far as a learning curve and break the beliefs that I have forced upon myself about the conditions that I need to work in.
So here we are: the all important action plan.
1: Dear Diary...
A diary! I don't know how it has taken me 21 years to come to such a blatantly obvious revelation. But from now, I'm keeping a diary dedicated to all things deadline, planning and uni related. This way I have to hold myself accountable to the plans I've made for myself and can never say I don't know when something is due because it's in the diary.
2: Going to sleep on deadline Eve.
No more all nighters the night before a deadline! I've made a pact with myself that my work has to be submitted early so there is absolutely no work to be done the night before something is due. This way, I can be all tucked up in bed early the night before like a kid on Christmas Eve... bliss.
3: Slow and Steady Wins the Race
A lesson that I should have learned in primary school when they used to read the book about the tortoise and that rabbit. All of my work will be broken up into manageable chunks that I can complete in the weeks leading up until the deadline, rather than it just being done in one go.
So there we have it, a concise three step action plan that'll (hopefully) make semester two an absolute breeze... I'll let you know how that one goes.

Applying to medical school
I’m now a third year medical student (eek) and thought I’d do a bit of updated reading into applications, along with using my own experience to make a post all about applying to med school (undergrad) in the UK :D
Grade requirements
Medicine is hugely competitive so this drives grade requirements up. Having said that, universities put a lot of emphasis on you as a person, so it’s not all about having the most A*s.
Different universities put different emphases on different grades. Some focus more on GCSEs than A-Levels for their filtering systems when selecting for interview (e.g. Oxford) - and vice versa
Universities often specify grades in certain subjects at GCSE (e.g. asking for As in maths/sciences).
The best advice is to check the university’s own website for their specific requirements for GCSEs, A-Levels/IB etc. and how they use this in their selection process.
The general A-Level offer is AAA, but quite a few universities requiring A*AA now, and Cambridge requires A*A*A.
The university of Buckingham (private), Kent and Medway (new from 2020) and UCLAN require AAB
Some universities also offer AAB for some applicants with specific contextual markers (e.g. from a school with below average performance, certain postcodes).
Personal statement
I have a whole other post on “How to write a bomb ass personal statement” for anyone generally (not medicine specific) - find that here
The medical personal statement is a bit different from other subjects, and the content will vary depending on which universities you are applying to.
Generally you want to include some evidence as to your consistent interest and commitment to medicine. This can be in the form of regularly volunteering at a care home, or being a supporter of a charity. Work experience also shows clear interest, especially if you can write something that shows you went beyond just turning up (e.g. researched or went and read a book on a condition you saw there).
Many medical schools also want to know about your interests and hobbies - to show that you are a rounded person. The exception here is Oxbridge; if you are applying to either Oxford or Cambridge I would recommend having a more academic-heavy personal statement.
I included a sentence on playing saxophone in bands/orchestras to grade 8, and a sentence on being in my city’s youth council - but I think everything else related to volunteering/books/work experience etc. (I did write quite a few sentences on my blog as that is also related to medicine/motivation etc.)
I’d recommend not opening with some profound quote or “I realised I wanted to be a doctor aged 3 when holding my baby sister after she’d been in ICU” etc. cause that won’t set you apart - the admissions team will have seen it all before.
It is important to look at the university admissions site as their selection criteria changes often! When I applied Bristol medical school weighted the statement 70% in selection for interview BUT from 2019 they no longer use it AT ALL before giving offers out (unless candidates have identical scores at interview)
Work experience and volunteering
All medical schools like to see some form of volunteering or experience - they want to know that you have had exposure to the NHS/heath provider environment and actually enjoy it.
However, it is is hard to get experience in a hospital and on a ward (there are legalities up to 16 about going on wards) so it isn’t necessary.
I got experience on a hospital ward through my mum’s friend who is a doctor. I suggest using your contacts - most of you will either have a (distant) family member who is a dr/nurse/midwife etc. or know a friend who knows one!
While on work experience use your lunch break (or any spare time) to write down interesting things you've seen. This doesn’t have to be scientific and about patients; it could be about the dr’s bedside manner, or the organisation and teamwork between the different health professionals.
If you can’t get onto a ward then care homes are usually happy to have volunteers. I volunteered at a special needs children’s daycare, which was super fun and useful for my application - so do some research about volunteering opportunities near you.
Your volunteering is useful to show you are reliable and dedicated, so the earlier you start (and longer you carry on doing it) the better! Try and start somewhere as soon as you’re 16 (as often a lot of places require “over 16″).
Extra-curricular activities and hobbies
Medical schools love to see that you are a ‘rounded’ candidate with interests outside simply studying and medicine. It’s important to get this across to the person reading your personal statement/interviewer as they want to accept people who are gonna be an asset to the university, not workaholics.
This doesn’t have to be the classic sport and/or musical instrument hobby (although these are brilliant and you should definitely shout about them). Mention being interested in photography or blogging! I mentioned my Tumblr in my personal statement and was asked about it at the interview stage.
It is good if you can use you extra-curricular activities to demonstrate something about yourself - e.g. blogging regularly shows that you can be committed and consistent; being in the local youth council shows you are reliable and have interest in the local community. This is a good way to show your best qualities.
University choices
Applications to uni through UCAS involve making 5 choices. You can fill up to 4 options with medicine, and the remaining choice can be left empty or filled with another course. It is common for people to fill this with a biomedical degree or to leave it blank, but you can go completely off-piece if you want.
It is so so important to be strategic with your choices. This requires some reading into how universities weight different aspects of the application process (admission tests, grades, personal statement) when selecting for interview.
E.g. if you score well above average in the UCAT it would be sensible to apply to one or two (or all!) universities that weight this heavily when selecting for interview. Newcastle only looks at UCAT prior to interview, simply ranking the scores and inviting the top people for interview. Therefore, if you score well they are ‘banked’ interviews already!
UCAT (UKCAT)
The UCAT (UKCAT) is the University Clinical Aptitude Test which is required by the majority of UK medical schools (and for dentistry).
It is taken between July and October (before application) and consists of multiple choice questions completed on a computer in a registered centre (I did mine where I did my driving theory test - there are loads of places).
The name changed this year from UKCAT - but the content of the test has stayed the same. See more information here
Verbal reasoning - 44 questions in 21 minutes
Decision making - 29 questions in 31 minutes
Quantitative reasoning - 36 questions in 24 minutes
Abstract reasoning - 55 questions in 13 minutes
Situational judgement - 69 questions in 26 minutes
There is no negative marking so you may as well put something down for every question - leave nothing blank!
The results are printed as you finish the test. This is the advantage over the (October) BMAT - you have a lot of time to think about your result and where it falls in the distribution of scores generally. If you do above average it is worth applying to unis that weight UCAT strongly, and if you don’t do so well you can apply to BMAT unis or those that weight it less.
The student room always has huge chats about it - this can be helpful to you to see where you lie (ish cause obviously not everyone posts there) but can also stress you out, so be cautious with this!
Your result is only valid for the year you apply, so if you take a year out after results and re-apply, you will have to re-take the test.
It costs £65 for tests between 1 July and end of August, and £87 for tests in Sept/Oct, so better to do it earlier! This also gives you more time to think about where to apply with results in hand.
BMAT
The BMAT (BioMedical Admission Tests) is a test required by a few unis in the UK. For the full list see their website.
I have a more detailed post about the BMAT here. Where I talk about resources you can use to revise and the exam content. Essentially it is a 2-hour pen-on-paper test that consists of 2 MCQ sections and 1 essay.
BMAT can be taken in August or October. The advantage of taking the test in August is that you get to know the results prior to sending off your UCAS application, so you can (as with UCAT) be strategic about where you apply.
Oxford is the only university (UK) that only accepts the October sitting of the test - aka you will not know your result before sending in your application.
However Oxford does accept the August sitting if you apply to graduate medicine (A101).
Deadlines
Unlike most applications to university via UCAS, your deadline for application is the 15th October at 18:00 (GMT) of your final year of school (or the year before you want to begin studying)
The earlier deadline is in line with applications to Oxford, Cambridge and to veterinary science and dentistry.
If you want anyone to look over the personal statement (e.g. get your English teacher to check grammar) then get onto them early - ideally as soon as you get back to school from summer.
Also make sure that your school is fully aware that you are going for early entry, and that your reference is written well in advance so there is no last minute rush or confusion.
The last UCAT deadlines are published each year on their website. The end of registration is usually mid September and last test is early October, so make sure you’ve registered and booked a test in time!
The August BMAT test occurs right at the end of August (31st 2019), with registration closing early-mid August. The October test occurs after the UCAS deadline, with registration closing end of September/beginning of October (see website for exact dates).

How do you make it? I have no idea what I'm doing in terms of networking, promotion, etc and as a result I have a very small follower base and a whopping 3 patrons. I'm feeling hopeless about my art career and was wondering if you could share advice about starting out/getting your shit together? Thanks boo.
Truthfully, I haven’t actually made it...
I am only able to do art full time because my partner supports me and because we live in social housing, in a country where the our health insurance and some other necessities are subsidized. Last year I made less that $5000 for the WHOLE year. I wouldn’t exactly call that “making it” when the minimum wage here is like... 1500 euros a month.
Also, I didn’t have a big Patreon for a long time either. I had 3 people supporting me for the first half a year, of which one was my best friend, the other was my partner, and the 3rd was a long time fan. After that I got 1 person pledging to my $1 tier that I had at the time. My Patreon ONLY kicked off when I announced that I was gonna start drawing erotic comics. It takes a long time of working, and a long time of waiting.
The best piece of advice I can give you is to draw things from you heart, things that you yourself are truly invested in. Very few people actually find success doing “Fanart of The Week” kind of drawings, because most people see right through you when you’re not invested.
I’ve been drawing my OCs for ages. Absolutely ages. It has taken a really long time for ANY of my work to be noticed, and a lot of it has come down to luck. Cultivate friendships with like-minded people, share things from other artists and they may take notice. I admit tumblr may not be the best platform to do social networking, but find artists on Twitter, retweet their content, comment on their stuff, and you’ll eventually build up a peer-network where you help each other but BE SINCERE ABOUT IT. Don’t just use other artists as a stepping stone, because word travels fast in art circles and nobody will want to support you if you’re using everyone for your own gains.
Art is a tough gig to get into because not only do you need to work hard, have great social and communication skills and be good to work with, but you also need to get lucky. I realize that this probably doesn’t inspire any confidence, but just. Keep working. Keep doing what you do, be sincere about your work and love what you create. If you love comics, make a webcomic, if you love drawing snapshots of your OCs in their worlds doing mundane stuff or exploring the world, do that. If you’re over the age of 18 or whatever the legal age is where you can start drawing NSFW stuff, I’ll admit that won’t hurt your chances of getting noticed but it’s not a necessity! (plus you get to practise anatomy because drawing erotic art is HARD) Keep drawing, don’t give up. You may have to split your time between having a day job (try finding stuff that can either relate to art or other hobbies. Work at an art shop, a library, a museum, video game or comic shop, etc) to support you in the meanwhile, unless you have a partner who can financially support you. So many artists I know have only really started finding some level of success in their 30s. I’m going to be turning 25 this year, so while it’s a bit depressing that it’ll probably take me at least 5 years before I TRULY start living comfortably because of my work, but it’s also comforting to know that I don’t need to be wildly successful at 26 to have made it in life. It takes time, and that’s ok. Survive while you can, create while you can, and things will fall into place eventually.
Other Good Tips That I have Learnt Over The Years.
- Get a Graphic Artists Guild Handbook of Ethics and Pricing (Doesn’t have to be the latest edition, I have the 14th one). This will save your skin from getting used and taken advantage of when it comes to commercial work. Price yourself according to those guidelines when someone asks for magazine or book work. Be aware of the laws of copyrights and working.
- Be aware that Commercial and Private commission work are two different beasts and should be treated completely differently. Always price yourself above minimum wage and never work for exposure. I did my final year of uni’s dissertation on how working for exposure and unpaid apprenticeships NEVER EVER EVER pay off. Ever. It is a fact. I studied this, I got in touch with many people. Nobody has ever benefited from unpaid work.
- For the love of gods please take breaks. Exercise. Make sure you don’t ruin your wrist or back like I did. Don’t pull all-nighters chasing an invisible deadline you put on yourself. Eat and drink regularly, take care of your mental health as best as you can. You only have 1 body.
- Have fun with what you do. If a project starts to feel like a chore, then take a break from it, and if you still don’t want to do it after a couple of months, then just. Drop it. If your own projects start eating at you then you can just leave them. People might be a bit sad but you need to have fun with what you do. You’re in this for a long time, so make sure you can keep going!

First post!
Okay so no one is gonna read this but this is my mental health & art journey blog. I’m gonna document my struggles with depression and journey of becoming an artist in a very competetive industry!
I’m currently a second year at a university. Due to my depression I’ve failed it miserably BUT I’ve snapped just in time and found people that helped me by giving me a big ass extension on my projects. It isn’t a lot of time, but is doable. But it requires a lot of work, like, daily grind for hours. And it’s scary, because I don’t know if I deserve to be at this university, I don’t know if I deserve this chance, I don’t know if I should continue education... It’s difficult to get out of bed in the morning and I have less than 100 days to catch up. This is so scary but I know I’d regret quitting now so I’m going to keep myself accountable on this blog.
What’s my goal?
To look back at this blog post in a few months and laugh at it. To gain confidence in myself and in my art. To become who I want to be. Who do I want to be? An artist with a wholesome personality! You know how people on twitter interract, give each other critique, trade drawings and make sweet comments to one another? How they empower each other and keep growing? I really want to find myself in a community like this. I believe that I really have the best intentions and because of that tend to be naive and hurt by people, but I’ll do my best to be worthy of something more, something real!
Hold up, let’s break up this goal into smaller pieces!
First, I’m going to catch up on uni work.
Then, I’ll be able to ease my stress and create art for the sake of it, with no stress creeping up on me like it does now.
Then I’d like to share it with other people and join a community of other artists and make their days better. I want to find friends for whom I can do birthday, congratulation drawings etc etc :D
Finally, I want to work on my portfolio and get into professional work in the industry, while using social media as my happy place!
But I’m not starting from nothing! R-right? Smol reminder of my achievements.
Moved to another country as a young teen and managed to do well in school while still learning the language. Found my calling (art, duh). Kept grinding my art skills as a teen, did some comissioned work, always pushed through. Participated in art contests even though I knew I stood no chance. Finished college with great grades and got into my dream university and my dream course after a dreadful interview... I keep bettering myself, both in my work ethic, by being way more organised by journaling, managing time, reducing distractions, working on my habits and by keeping good hygiene and a clean room even when I’m depressed and disfunctional for long periods at a time.
Let’s make a start!
It’s unrealistic and very unlikely that I’ll be able to work for 10+ hours a day for now, but I’m going to do my best by starting at at least 3 hours of uninterrupted work everyday. I’ve already done checklists of every task I need to complete by the given deadline and will attempt to cross out at least 1 thing every single day!
What about motivation?
Motivation is not a very reliable resource, however I feel a lot of it as I’m typing this post. A lot has happened in my life in the recent months and I finally feel like there’s a meaning in my life and that the universe is giving me a chance to bounce back. Let’s do this!
If you actually got this far and can relate in any way and want to talk or share experiences, feel free to message me ;w; cya

How to Write the Best Personal Statement
For UK students moving into the upper sixth this year, personal statement writing will take over your life from September until October or December depending on your deadline (for Oxbridge, vet med and medicine candidates, you need to apply early). I am about 80% certain that my personal statement got me my uni place because my predicted grades were not great and my actual grades were worse. Even though you’ve heard it a hundred times already, your personal statement is the most important essay you will ever write so I thought I’d share some of my tips to help out any struggling students out there.
1. Start early. It’s easy to look at the deadline and say “I’ve got ages to do this. It can wait.” No, it can’t. Leaving it until the last minute just piles on extra stress that you really don’t need and won’t result in the best personal statement, no matter how well you work under pressure.
2. Make lists. The best way to start planning your personal statement is to make lists of things you want to say. Some of this will be personal achievements, some will be relevant books you’ve read or trips you’ve been on. Just getting ideas down on paper makes the actual writing much easier.
3. Know the course you are applying for and why you want to do it. This is where you will have millions of tabs open and a notebook in front of you. The universities you are applying to don’t matter (the personal statement is non-specific) but the course does. If you are applying to take computer science it’s no good talking about how fascinating you find ecology, no matter how true it is. If you are applying for several, subtly different, courses, try to tailor your personal statement to all of them.
4. Passion without being obvious. Being an English student is handy for stuff like this because implicature comes easily. What we were told at college is NEVER SAY YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT IT! Other phrases to avoid are things like “since I was a child”, “I’ve always been fascinated by” and “I am a _ student studying at _”. Your interest in the subject should be made obvious by other things.
5. Be positive. A personal statement is not the place to be lamenting your poor grades or making excuses. Instead, focus on the positives. If you have volunteered anywhere, include it. If you did an extra course, write about it. These all show motivation to go the extra mile.
6. Relate everything to your course. I did A-level sciences and related them to English and my EPQ was about the health benefits of horse riding for disabled people. It was about the furthest from my future plans as it was possible to be but I managed it.
7. Get help from your teachers. My form tutor sat with me every week for over a month tweaking bits of my personal statement until even I was sick of it. Just changing a few words could make a difference and your teachers know how to get the most out of what you’ve got.
8. Keep to the character limit. UCAS allows up to 4,000 characters or 47 lines, whichever comes first. If you go over this, you cannot submit it so keep it short but sweet... unlike this list of tips!
I hope this has been helpful. If you have any questions, send me an ask and I’ll get back to you. Good luck on all your uni applications!

I have a nice workplace in terms of management and most of my coworkers so my experience here may be a bit skewed but I'd like to speak about my experience with something that affects a lot of people on this page MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE.
This is gonna get long and I've actually cut out a lot to save explaining because it's a bit ...shitty... but here's the main story.
I just wanna say on the out - don't be afraid of sharing. I found that sharing actually did help me a lot at work, and if I told them earlier it would have saved me a lot of hassle.
I've worked for the same company for almost 4 years now. I started as a high school student, transferred and then continued as a university student. Before that I worked in a really terrible small store as a summer temp, and I've worked for my school during the summer for three weeks (and ongoing corresponding throughout the year that I'm paid for) as part of a summer school exchange. But. My focus for this will be my main job and the store I'm currently at.
I suffer from an anxiety disorder - with it brining symptoms of depression but I would never really say I had depression or even depression and anxiety. I don't take meds and I'm not currently in therapy (I had a short stint at the beginning of this year but had to bail as it interfered with class). Although I believe understanding your symptoms is important I'm not 100% of self-diagnosis but I was pretty sure prior to diagnosis that I had problems with anxiety. I was diagnosed in 2014.
I'd never properly brought it up at work. I sometimes mentioned feeling increasingly more anxious at times when I was at store 1 during my high school days and this was brushed off. I think my supervisor said something along the lines of, "everyone gets like that! just relax!" he was a pretty nice guy, but, a bit dim. Another time I told him I was stressed and he told me I was too young to be stressed.
The first time it came up was when I first got introduced to my current manager. I was working in the store for about 2 or so months when my manager there quit. I was heartbroken because I really hated my then "new" store at the time and constantly felt homesick - him and maybe one or two others made it bearable. What's worse, my new(current) manager was known to a lot of the staff already as he worked between our store and another store as a supervisor a few years back, and then became a temporary ASM before the current one came. I was opening with him on maybe his third shift back, it was me, another staff member and someone completely new. He didn't say one word to me - really - as he wanted to help the new person and he knew the other person. I felt super uncomfortable as for that whole shift I felt forgotten about - he spoke to everyone else as they were either a new seasonal staff or he worked with them beforehand. I was just not on his radar. At this time. I hated this place even more. At this time, my anxiety was hella bad. I had a lot on my plate, like, a fuckload of shit that I'd rather not get into online and it would probably get us off the point of this place.
Essentially, I needed to clarify something with work that my old manager had told me was okay but it didn't seem to be noted anywhere. As I didn't know him at all, I asked supervisor number 1 about my issue. Supervisor 1 shrugged me off and told me I'd have to speak to our boss about this. He wasn't in on my next shift, so, I decided to ask supervisor 2 - supervisor 2 was less helpful than supervisor 1 as she told me the exact opposite of what I was hoping. I cried the whole way home. I felt trapped and hopeless.
I even contacted my old manager asking if I could transfer back down. It was almost Xmas anyway, so, I could just go home (although this was not ideal, abusive household). I only lived about 100 miles away so I could always travel to there on a Friday night, work the weekend and come up mid-Monday as I had no class either until the summer (when I would just come home and work...again not ideal but at the time I was getting a lot of money for my age as I was still only 17) or I could just work there until I found a new job here.
The next shift I was in was with my manager, it was a Tuesday starting early, I don't know why I was scheduled in for this shift as I had class. But. I went anyway. I thought fuck it, I'll ask him. As I didn't know him that well I just explained my situ and also what Supervisor 2 said to me. I also told him (truthfully) that I'd been having panic attacks since Supervisor 2 spoke to me.
His response was kinda ...weird. He thought it was "fucked up" (exact words) that he had no handover on the issue and immediately sorted it. He told me later on that shift that "nothing work related should make you that anxious EVER". And we left it like that.
I still felt left out at work. My manager still didn't really speak to me. My anxiety was getting worse due to class/bad family back "home" and work. I recall getting told off by my manager for something really trivial and for asking for a holiday a few times for him to snap at me before storming off to enter it. I assumed he didn't like me. I was a pain in his ass.
Shortly after this, I got hit by a massive anxiety truck. I felt so low, I couldn't leave my bed. I missed so much class and so much work (although I lied and said I had food poisioning from work as I didn't know how to bring it up). And then... I felt better. I was scheduled for work at 9:30am on a Sat, which was pretty standard and the night before a few of my high school friends were in town for a gig, so I met them after it for a drink. Honestly, I don't drink A LOT - I have a very low tolerance made worse by anxiety. Since I was in class all day and was meant to work the next day this would be the only time I'd see them for a while. I lasted one drink and felt overwhelmed. I had to go home. I cried all night and couldn't calm myself down. Before I knew it, it hit 7:30am and I was still shaking so badly. I honestly couldn't make it out of my place to get the bus. Serving customers was off the menu. I'd only been back on shift as well, and hadn't done my back to work. I called in and it was Supervisor 2 - who I really hated and was leaving soon. But. I just told her. I couldn't lie anymore.
"You've been off a lot."
I had been off a lot - at my old location I was off ONCE and that was because I had a sickness bug and was sent home the day previously. (I had to throw up and couldn't make it to the bathroom so threw up outside the store...lovely). I'd been off here a lot - mainly due to catching illnesses but more recently due to anxiety.
"....I'll go see a doctor?" I shrugged.
"Yes, do that. I'll say to manager."
I had a long weekend (inc Monday) of wallowing in self pity before making my way to the doctors on the Tuesday. My doctor could see I was intensely stressed and asked me if my student loan could cover my living costs (no) as my job seemed unnecessary due to my university commitments. By this time I had lost around 20 lbs as well - I was never skinny to begin with but this weight came off in about 2-3 months essentially because I was living off ramen as the thought of cooking/going to the shop seemed too scary (hahahah you're such a student with your ramen nope I'm fucking mentally ill). He offered me medication but I denied, as I was worried about adjusting to them so close to my deadlines. I planned to start them that summer but I'm still not on anything. He wrote me off for a further two weeks for both work and uni, but, I was behind on uni so went in anyway.
I didn't want to go back to work. The thought of work made me feel so ill and so anxious. I started looking at new jobs and filled in an application for a stockroom job for a museum gift shop. I was just waiting for the right time to contact my old manager from the first store for a reference because there was No Way In Hell my boss was gonna give me a reference.
When I returned, after trying not to cry as I reached the door, my boss grinned at me as I walked in, "HEY WELCOME BACK! :)"
"...hi..."
"I'll catch up with you later, okay?"
As I entered the staffroom, a new face was there, "HI I'm Supervisor 2.1!" Supervisor 2 had left already, phew. Supervisor 2.1 kept talking and talking and talking. He was nice. I already decided I liked him because he seemed to have little filter and seemed genuine.
"I used to work at [other location] but I live in [same place as me] so this is closer! And I'm getting more money as I'm not a SUPERVISOR!!! Just getting used to the busses!"
I smiled and told him I got the busses too and would help him tonight.
As I was about to start, my manager called me into his office to do my paperwork and also dragged Supervisor 2.1 in to show him how to do it, and to keep him "in the loop".
"We need to do your back to work form. But this is quite serious."
I thought...fuck... he thinks I'm faking. I'm gonna get fired for a lot of absences.
Nope.
We filled in the form as usual and looked over my doctors note. He said he recalled the time I told him I was taking panic attacks and just thought I was exaggerating and he apologised a lot for thinking that.
He then told me he valued me so much as a team member as I always got shit done and was a hardworker, he apologised if he'd ever been "off" with me as he said he just didn't really think I liked him or needed constantly guidance on tasks.
We had this long-ass chat about mental health. In which he told me he'd been on and off anti-anxiety medication for the past 5 years. He went into detail about how he didn't go into his old work at all and eventually got fired and said he was super proud I sought help before things went too far for me in regards to either work or school. Supervisor 2.1 chipped in and said he's a very nervous person, perhaps not anxiety level but nevertheless very nervous.
It went on for an hour and since then, we've had a great relationship. And I mean REALLY GREAT. Essentially, we worked out we were basically the same person - I would have probably never found out this shit if we never had this long-ass convo. I also become really close friends with Supervisor 2.1 who constantly gets me into trouble for talking to him and coming back late from lunch as he always insists on dining out.
I think I was making myself quite distant at work because I was in a bad place mentally - and because of that - I was getting increasingly anxious at work.....the cycle went on.
Since then, I've obviously had "difficulties" but it's been super easy to talk to managers about it. I once mentioned, in passing, to our ASM how the messy tshirts unsettled me and she switched my zone in the store so I could go tidy them (I was doing nothing anyway). I've had reviews and have been praised for hard work and customer service - with downsides being confidence, usually.
Recently, I had quite a bad anxiety "relapse" - I asked my manager if I could talk to him - as it was fucked anyway and an issue at work with one coworker and another being assholes to myself and another coworker made it worse. Mixed in with deadlines, I needed either reduced hours or a couple of back of house shifts to help me calm. We talked out the issues and I took a panic attack that he managed to talk me out of before it got too bad which, sadly, kinda set him off a bit as I noticed he was stimming quite badly. He checked up on me that night and thanked me for sharing.
Due to the fact I get easily stressed and my work knows this, they are happy to fit my schedule around my class and deadlines. Something that before they were a bit like "meh" about.
I just wanna say PLEASE DO NOT DO A ME AND HOLD IT IN UNTIL IT GETS REALLY BAD. I still get very stressed and nervous when I think about that time in my life - if I had been more open earlier I would have saved myself a lot of stress which in turn made my mental health worse.

Study and college survival tips
Here’s my attempt at a comprehensive and actually realistic list of tips, especially if you’re struggling with mental health related issues but in general this should be helpful for everyone!
How to stay organized:
throw out the idea of a fancy bullet journal and get a solid planner - unless you really want one of those I can tell you at least five better ways to spend your time instead of working on the layout of a bullet journal
write down important dates (tests, exams, deadlines) immediately - that way you can’t forget about them
colour coding - seriously, colour code everything, it will be a life saver! Get differently coloured folders and use differently coloured pencils to write down dates and notes - that way you can easily identify information and it will save you quite some time
file away your papers/notes after every class - I struggled with this for the longest time, but seriously, do it, nothing is worse than loose sheets flying around your room and bag! Take a few minutes after each class to sort your stuff - I know it’s annoying but it saves you a lot of trouble and gives you the chance to mentally go over everything you’ve learned and possible homework you’ve been given
have an organized pencil case - it might be my personal pet peeve, but nothing is worse than showing up with little more than one pencil in your bag. A quick overview of what you might need: a pencil/eraser, a pen/fountain pen, ink eraser (my go to, I don’t use ballpoint pens any longer), a ruler, coloured pencils, a marker, some kind of sharpies (I also have glue and a scissors, but that’s optional)
stay hydrated! Meaning, always make sure to pack something to drink every day - I know this might seem silly, but it’s important to remember that! (pro tip: always pack some snacks too - chocolate is totally fine!)
How to study:
Take notes in class - try to keep your handwriting neat and tidy and write in your own words. Don’t write everything the teacher says, just write down what’s important to you
Ask questions (and write down the answers) - seriously, if there’s something you don’t understand, ask the teacher about it. It’s literally their job to help you understand and if you’re genuine about it they’re not going to bite your head off. I tend to ask a lot of seemingly “silly” questions in math class but it’s because I really want to understand and make sure I understood what the teacher just told us - I never once got told off by doing so and the notes I made from those answers are the most valuable to me because the teacher made sure to respond to my specific problem
Pay attention - you’re in class to learn, don’t forget that. Paying attention in class is the key to good grades and will reduce your study time at home!
Do your homework - I admit, I don’t always do my homework, but I try my best. Don’t beat yourself up if you haven’t done them (rest is important) but know they’re helpful to find potential problems and things you’re still struggling with.
Paying attention in class, taking notes and doing your homework will minimize the amount you will have to study for tests and exams - I can’t stress this enough, organization is the key and it’s the secret why I rarely ever have to study for tests. I know my topics, have asked questions and made sure to figure out my struggles. A week before a test I usually flip through my folders and memorize some facts and most of the time that’s enough - it’s not magic, but it might seem like it to others who aren’t quite es organized.
if you need it to study, write flashcards - write down important information, keep it short and simple and remember to colour code. They’re easy to carry around and will help you memorize everything a little better
How to stay motivated/take care of yourself:
here’s the truth, you won’t always be motivated. That’s okay, but always remember, why you’re doing this. I know I’m studying all these things because I want to go to uni afterwards and this goal serves as motivation whenever I feel in a slump. Find your own motivation/goal and remind yourself of that when things get tough.
don’t beat yourself up if you are behind on something - take your time, take care of yourself first. Your health is important and despite what everyone else seems to tell you, there’s no rush to get through school/college/uni. You can always repeat a year/semester but it’s much harder to recover once you’ve exhausted yourself.
mental health days - take a day off when you can afford it and feel stressed and overwhelmed. Sometimes you don’t have any energy left and that’s okay. Again, don’t beat yourself up and take care of yourself!
ask for help - if you’re struggling, tell your teachers or guidance counsellor. They’re humans too and the can really help you and offer support most of the time. It might not always work, but it is always worth a try!
Breathe - it’s okay. Don’t stress yourself. I know this is hard but you’re doing better than you think you are, I promise you that!
You are not alone - talk to friends, whether they’re at school or online and if you ever need help, my askbox is always open too!

Dear friend,
I’m such a horrible person. Like the worst a person could be. Not like racist, or homophobic, or murderer or anything like that, fuck those people they’re worse. But I mean like all the factors that makes a human normal and do well in life, I haven’t got.
I think I’ve realised I’m asexual and aromantic, so I have no interest in having a relationship with anyone. So theres a good chance I’ll never get married or have children, and I’ll die alone. This is especially likely due to the fact I’m very, very introverted and get tired easily from even little social interaction, so I can never hold a conversation for long. Also, I’m asocial (I’ve just found out about this so could be wrong??) I don’t like being around other people, I’d much rather be alone then surrounded by people, I always try to find away of getting out of things I’ve been invited to. So how am I meant to find someone to basically be my best friend and spend my life with? That is why I’m likely to die alone, without any close relationships, and not achieve any normal family and relationship goals.
Okay so some people don’t care for having a family, they pursue other things in life. Something relating to knowledge and learning. Now, before university I would probably have said that education and searching for knowledge interests me, and I could carry on learning forever. But I’ve realised I’m rubbish at it. I struggle to research any topic in detail. I forget information too easily and I’m unable to apply anything I find. I get distracted way too easily so could never dedicate myself to one topic. So once again I fail at what I should strive for.
Same with jobs, I don’t enjoy anything enough to want to do it for life. And because of my anxiety and general mental health I struggle with the social aspects expected at every job. I struggle to find motivation for anything those days when mental health takes control, to then have to go work seems impossible. I could e self-employed but there is still a large social aspect to this. And going by my university experience I wouldn’t do too well. My anxiety causes me to stress and panic and generally struggle so much near deadlines. And depression and my general lack of motivation stops me from achieving throughout uni.
I’m not good at anything. And every single thing I could dedicate my life too I have some major flaw that stops me and would make me fail. Thats why I feel the way I do about suicide and dying in general. Because it’s not as though I can achieve anything anyways so what is the point of continuing! I’m so useless and pointless. I have no reason to be here at all.
All the best,
Claire

How I beat procrastination and stay organised throughout the semester
«procrastination is the... thief of time/enemy of success/assassin of opportunity/art of keeping up with yesterday»
This is my last semester ever at uni and it’s the most stressed I’ve ever been. Writing my dissertation on top of all the other projects I’ve had to work on (as well as life problems) has been a real struggle. However, I’ve found a system that has helped me to stay productive and basically get shit done. Not gonna lie, I still struggle and there are days I feel like crying just thinking about all the things that need to be done but most of these tips I’ll share with you today have been very helpful to stay focused and not go entirely mad.
1. Set clear and specific goals. “Today I will write four paragraphs” or “I’ll read and annotate the first two chapters of the book”. Challenge yourself a little but keep it realistic. Setting unachievable goals is setting yourself up for failure.
2. Identify your reason for procrastinating. Procrastination can be very detrimental to one’s success yet most of us still struggle with it somewhat regularly. Whether it’s because we’re scared of failure, because we’re perfectionists and feel the need to control everything, because we find it hard to work during a specific time period or any other reason. However, I think identifying what’s making you procrastinate is the perfect start to beat it. Fear of failure is hard to overcome but the hardest part is to start. If you have a project that you’re dreading, just try starting small. Maybe write the structure, or the title (hell, even just your name). Try to make that look nice if it pleases you. For example, I find extremely helpful focusing on the font/style, etc. at the beginning, yes most professors will tell you to leave that for last but honestly, fuck it, you do you, boo. If you’re a perfectionist and fear that your work will not be good enough, just try to think that not writing anything is already worse than whatever it is you could write if you actually sat down and typed away. It’s the same process with whatever reason you may find for your procrastination, find the source and try starting small.
That being said, please please do not feel bad if you do procrastinate here and there, maybe it’s just that you’re exhausted and need a real break from your studying/working life, relax and eventually get back to work, even if it’s the next day, it’s okay.
3. Give yourself 2 minutes. Like I've said, starting is the worst part. So, just give yourself a short period of time to work on your project or to study. If after that you feel like you can go on working then do it!! More often than not you'll feel like you've found your groove and you're already in the mood to keep working/studying! If you don't feel like it though, maybe have a rest and try again at another time, or just challenge yourself to keep on going.
4. Block out distractions and stay off social media. This one is pretty self-explanatory. Put your phone away (or in a different room if it’s that much of a distraction to you), use apps or extensions that block distraction websites. I know we all love to scroll through our twitter timeline and our instagram feeds (or watch people’s stories), but all of those suck up a lot of our time. Time we could use to get shit done. Work first and go on social media during your study breaks.
5. Figure out what takes up most of your time. If you know how much time you spend doing things, it’ll be easier to cut time where and when needed. It’ll be also helpful if you’re trying to set up a daily routine, that way you can assign a specific time frame to a certain task.
6. Find out when you’re most productive. Sort of related to the previous one. Many people work best in the mornings, I, for instance, happen to fall in this group. When I’m not at uni I wake up at 8am and work from 9am to 1pm/2pm; that’s five hours where I am extremely productive if I set my mind to it. Other people work better in the afternoon or at night, that’s completely fine too. Figure out what’s best for you and plan your day/week from there.
7. Have a clean environment. They say “clear desk, clear mind” for a reason. Working on a clean desk with few distractions is so beneficial. Also having a clean room is very good for your mental health as well. Believe me, I know that can be hard if you suffer from depression or other mental health problems but if you can find a bit of strength to clean and declutter a little bit, it will make you feel better and therefore you’ll be more willing to work.
8. Make to-do lists. I promise I’m not only writing this one because I love lists. Writing down what you want to do, as well as other commitments, means that you won’t forget what you have to do and also, again, you will have a clearer mind. Just thinking about all the things you have to do can be extremely exhausting and can suck up all your energy so noting everything down will help you avoid that.
9. Work with time limits. I’ve found that breaking things down is the most efficient way to work (for me at least). By working in small blocks of time, I’ve been able to increase my productivity and stay focused. I use the popular Pomodoro technique most of the time: you work for 25 min then take a 5 min break and you repeat this four times, then when it’s time for your fourth pause you can increase your time-break to 30 min. The time intervals are just suggestions though; obviously, you can set whatever works for you. For instance, I don’t follow the 25-5 “rule”. I use a 40-10 interval and then for the long break, I set it up for 25 minutes. This is what works best for my attention span so again, try different intervals until you find your ideal ratio.
10. Do not forget self-care/me-time. Please please don’t work yourself to exhaustion, try to avoid burnout. It’s important to keep in mind that we all need time for ourselves and we can’t be productive 24/7, that’s a sick mentality imo. Some may say this contradicts the whole point of this post but I do not think so. Of course, being productive is important when you have deadlines but your mental health should come first. Know when it’s time to stop and gain your energy back. Don’t blame yourself for having a Netflix binge session or for spending hours reading a book, it’s okay, you deserve it.
Let me know what things you do to stay productive!

hey! can i ask what you're studying at uni? maybe i got it totally wrong but it sounded like you're studying some sort of bioscience or something and i'm kinda thinking about applying for biosciences (biochemistry or cellular biology) or pharmaceutics as a major in uni and i was just wondering how you've found your studies? any tips maybe?
Hey buddy! No you didn’t get it wrong at all, I majored in pharmacy, so pharmaceutics, biosciences, pharmacognosy, botany, anatomy etc were all included in my studies but our focus was the actual medication and how to make and dispense it. I got really interested in biosciences and microbiology in my second and third years of uni, so after graduation I started looking for master’s in microbiology and that’s where I’m headed next. I start my master’s next year!!
I think it depends on what subjects you like to study and your affinity for information. It’s definitely tough work and needs some serious studying, there’s a lot of info to take in, so you gotta be prepared for a mountain of work and sometimes pulling all-nighters, but it’s also enjoyable and it pays off once you’re done. and there’s the lab work to look forward to, that was always my favorite part! my advice as a graduate is to be serious about your studies but don’t let it overshadow your mental health, the amount of work/studying can get pretty big and stressful, but it’s far more manageable if you divide the work into smaller portions and actually take a break and get some rest when you need to. I remember overworking myself so many times during my second year, and looking back at it now I know I would have done way better if I had stepped back and gave myself time to breathe.
That being said, my main tips are;
do a bit more reading than your professors ask you to if you can. science is all related and there’s always more to study and discuss, so some extra reading can get you a few bonus marks and can come in handy for essay questions. scientific journals are your friends.
don’t skip classes where there’s attendance or you’re not firmly confident in your knowledge of the material.. you’ll probably regret it while doing finals. trust me.
never ever skip labs aka the practical part of your learning (seriously kiddo, labs are very important and you need to do the work yourself to be able to remember it). you’ll need to write reports for most lab work you do, and it’s far easier to write them well when you’ve actually attended the lab and did the work
go to your professors’ office every now and then so they know what you look like, this will help if you need recommendation letters later on or need help with grad projects.
hand in your assignments on time. not all professors are kind enough to give you a delay or accept the work late. always make sure you know when the deadline is. if you have to upload it online and the site says the deadline is 11:59pm, it will not accept it at 12:00am bc online systems don’t mess around.
a lot of professors send emails about the lectures and even notifications for online quizzes and pop quizzes, so make sure to regularly check your uni email
ask your professors to explain anything you don’t get, most of them will be thrilled to recieve questions, and remember to check every professor’s office hours at the beginning of the semester
try to find yourself a study group or just a few friends to revise with, you’ll need the push on finals week. and on that note, you should definitely explore the library building and find out where all the coffee machines are. you’ll thank me later.
make use of the library! it’s free, it’s got books, it’s got a lot of resources, the computers there can save you if you need to finish an assignment quickly, and you can tell people to shut up there without anyone getting mad at you. ideal, really.
try to get studying done on daily basis. there are a lot of facts and things to memorize when it comes to biosciences and the lessons are often connected to each other, so revising each lecture the day you take it will help keep you from falling behind
final thing I can think of right now is that you should ask around about each professor’s exam style. some are focused on essay questions, others go with diagrams and MCQs, and it’s always good to have an idea of what your exam will look like and how to better study for it
this got way longer than I intended for it to be so I’ll stop here, but if you need any more advice or want to talk about any subject specifically just hmu. I’m always happy to help! and good luck for applying to uni, buddy, I’d love to know which major you end up deciding on!!
#really hope this helped nonny#and tell me if there's anything else you want to know <3#asks#mara talks for ts#long post#Anonymous#ref#study tips

I am just feeling so fucking angry and stressed. Have this deadline in like, 3 days. The month of July has been quite tough for me: first time living on my own, work-related stress, and my partner dealing with some HEAVY shit. I want to support him as much as I can but this was too much for me. I am not strong enough for all of that. There were many days where I could barely function. Struggled to drag myself out of bed. Struggled to feed myself. Couldn’t focus on anything. Didn’t have the energy to cook at night. Then I couldn’t sleep. And in the middle of all that, I was trying to support my partner the best I could.
Have to write my fucking dissertation in the middle of all that. And it′s really important for me. Both because it’s a project I’ve been working on for a whole year now, and I want it to go well, and because it will influence my future (i.e. whether I can go on with a PhD, my chances of getting funding, etc.). And that’s fucking important for me. Because for the moment I don’t have anything for next year. Got some savings, but this will barely make me leave through four month, let alone pay any uni fees.
And now I’m asking for an extension on the basis of my mental health. And it’s true and relevant, because it’s been shit for the past whole month. But the university support system only takes into account recent issues, so they don’t necessarily care that I felt like crap during most of July as long as I feel good now. That’s the thing, I am feeling a normal amount of stress just now, but have to play it up to have all the anxiety and shit mental health of the month of July taken into account. Because I easily lost one to two weeks’ worth of work, because I was exhausted and my head was a mess.
The thing, though, is that just now I keep on blaming myself for not being finish by the deadline. I feel like it’s all my fault, like I didn’t organise myself well enough, like I was just dicking around all this time and only realised now that there was work that needed to be done. A part of me knows that that’s not true, and that I was genuinely trying to work but too exhausted to do it, and that I needed some time off. But I also have this voice in the back of my head telling me that I haven’t done enough, that I am faking it (’hey look at you, you’re not that stressed just now, you’re just not able to admit you fucked up and can’t actually do it’, ‘look at you, you actually take time to take care of yourself, go for a run, take enough time to sleep each night, you’re not working 24/7, you could push yourself some more instead of asking for some special treatment’). Even though I know that I work best during short and intense periods, with proper relaxation in-between.
And I really don’t like having to ask for extensions, telling to loads of people that I’m not doing good, that I struggle with shit I can’t control. I don’t want to be seen as the weak one who does not even try. Especially not by my supervisor and other uni staff. I don’t want them to pity me, or to look down on me because of my mental health.
Fucking hate that voice in my head - I just want to focus, to move forward. And I don’t think that my uni studies should fuck up my quality of life. Like yeah, I’ll work and do all that is required of me, but I will also take time for myself, my partner and my friends. I do not want to burn out for my studies, it’s not right.

What will happen when I lose my insurance?
I'm 19 years old, and i'm currently receiving my dads insurance. He is on blue cross blue shield, and I can use his insurance until i'm 26 as long as i'm in college. Well...I'm moving in June and I will be taking a break from college. I'll also be moving out of state in which case I have no clue if the insurance will cover me there. I haven't done jack squat with signing up for my own insurance because I also have a health care card through the state. When I move and I lose my insurance how do I go about signing up for new insurance? I'm planning to get insurance through an employer and sign up once I finish my first 3 months. I don't mind being without insurance for a few months because i'm getting all of my health care/vision/dental done right now. I heard that the Affordable Care Act has deadlines and that you won't be able to sign up for a plan until 2015? Also does that mean I'll be fined for no longer having insurance? I'm so confused.""

I feel like being a single mother because the father of the baby didnt want me to keep the baby because is not in a financially stable situation now and he had already 4 kids from a previous marriage and relationship so he said that I had to live with my decision on my own basically. He told me that because we are not married I cant use his health insurance! Like I said I am telling myself that I am all alone on this and I am desperate. Costs of delivery can be extremely expensive and of course I cant afford them. I need help please! Do you have to have car insurance for all of your vehicles (California- read more for details)?
I live in California and I understand that by law here you have to have car insurance; at least minimum coverage that is. But does this apply to all cars regardless of whether you even drive them on the street or not? The reason why I ask this is because I have a 1971 Chevy Camaro SS which I bought from my father about a year ago (He basically gave it to me, but I didn't want to look spoiled in front of my sister so I gave him $2,000 for it). I did have it insured for the first year thinking it probably wouldn't cost me much, but now I really regret getting it insured since it costed me nearly a fortune this year alone. And the thing that really sucks is that I've never even driven it yet since it still needs a lot of tuning up (and unfortunately I don't have enough time to fix it up since I'm usually a very busy person). Do you think it's possible to uninsure my camaro since it's not even drivable yet? I mean it's not like I'm going to hit a car or something with it since it's just sitting in my garage the whole time. I would ask my insurance agent about this, but I never really trusted them. (They were the ones that persuaded me to get it insured in the first place without even telling me whether I had to or not)""

Car insurance question no claims bonus?
so, i went onto the website with the annoying singing fat man, got a reasonable quote for my classic car, declared all cars in my household, one of which is a company car with 2 years NCB. Paid the deposit and remainder was to be paid monthly by direct debit. After a couple of weeks now they've written to me wanting proof of the NCB I stated, wanting details of the previous insurance and policy number. So, I email them (as they stated in the letter that this would be the quickest way to resolve and avoid having my policy cancelled) saying the NCB was on company insurance rather than another private insurance which i think they assume I have (the option on NCB on the website included NCB on company cars), no response to my email, so I send another, now I've had a red coloured letter threatening cancellation of my insurance unless I provide the information. Tried phoning and it's either constantly engaged or answer phone. Emailed for a third and final time and put a copy of the email in the post with no response. I feel I have been totally mislead by assuming I have NCB on my company car policy, so, should they decide to cancel my policy can I get my deposit and 1st month's payment back? Citizens advice has told me that the policy was misleading and was not as described so I should be due a refund but how can I expect to get this if I cannot contact them? HELP and advice please!""

Who thinks the health insurance waivers means that companies don't have to provide health insurance?
You'd be wrong. Care to understand why? http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2010/12/10/truth-about-health-care-waivers The bad news is that today mini-meds are often the only affordable option for many low-wage workers because retail and chain restaurants rarely offer their workers options beyond these plans. And because mini-meds are built around annual limits, estimates from employers and insurers indicate that beginning the phase out of annual limits this year would cause mini-med premiums to rise by more than 200 percent, forcing employers to drop coverage and sending many low-wage workers to purchase insurance on the more expensive individual insurance market, where they would get an even worse deal than what they have today. The result would be a whole new population of uninsured Americans. To ensure that we protect the coverage that these workers have today until better options are available for them in 2014, the law allows HHS, in extreme cases, to issue temporary waivers from the phase out of annual limits. There are some important facts to remember about these temporary waivers: The waivers only apply to one provision of the law the provisions phasing out annual limits. Insurance companies and employers that receive waivers must comply with all other parts of the Affordable Care Act. The waivers last one year. Insurance companies must reapply for the waivers each year between now and 2014 when annual limits on coverage will be completely prohibited and individuals will have more affordable and better private insurance choices in the competitive Exchange markets. All employers and insurers that offer mini-med plans may apply for a waiver if they demonstrate that there will be large increases in premiums or a significant decrease in access to coverage without a waiver. You can read a list of employers and insurers that have received waivers here.""

Auto Insurance coverage -- How much Liability and Medical?
I got a couple of questions about about auto insurance coverage. Namely, what's the best amount of liability and medical coverage to select. 1) For the liability, I know it's wise to get the best liability that one can afford to cover your assets. But how about if one also gets umbrella coverage. For example, if one gets an umbrella coverage at a $2 million limit and the liability limit for the auto insuarance is $300,000 or $500,000, does it make sense to select the $500,000 or is it better to select the $300,000 limit since the umbrella coverage would kick in? 2) for medical, is this redundant coverage and not needed because wouldn't the liability portion also cover medical expenses? Or is it wise to get this, for example, if a passenger is not insured (no health insurance), so the medical part would help out in that case? Thanks.""

THE BORING STUFF
It’s been a helluva couple of weeks and it’s reminded me that there are soo many irritating things involved in keeping yourself afloat in the midst of a flare up. I’m actually not even sure where to begin but it seems logical to list the issues that have come up for me recently as I know that unfortunately, they will come up for everyone who suffers with a chronic condition at some point. In the past few weeks I’ve started a new job, had my first pain clinic appointment, had a day treatment at the hospital (requiring sedation and day or two of recovery), had my period (awful), had a number of GP appointments, sent off a claim for DSA (disabled students allowance), applied for an extension on a uni deadline (due to hospital/period/illness/work) and attempted to keep up with all missed lectures and tutorials due to work and sickness whilst trying to keep myself fed, watered and relatively sane. And if that doesn’t seem like a lot, imagine doing all those things while feeling like you’re dragging a led weight behind you everywhere you go, having a hazy memory and slow reactions due to heavy duty pain meds as well as the extreme fatigue and low mood that endo flare ups bring. Not to mention my fun new symptom.. completely numb legs and horrible joint pain?! What is that about. Ultimately having a chronic illness (or two, or three!) feels like a part time job. There is so much planning involved, so many forms, calculating the best dates to do things so that you don’t let people down and the financial stress of working out how much medication and hospital trips are going to cost you. I don’t know if people realise quite how much work has to go into these things before you can allow yourself to relax and heal. I’m so so lucky that I have a network of extremely supportive and helpful people at my fingertips, who overwhelm me with their kindness and understanding, but I’m sure many of you are familiar with not wanting to feel like a burden on them and trying to do everything yourself. It gets overwhelming. The past few weeks, I was overwhelmed. I feel quite positive at the moment having come back from my treatment last week with news that there doesn’t appear to be endo on my bowel and that the extreme pain is just (another) unfortunate side effect of the condition. It sounds strange to be positive about that, but it means going ahead with trying some different pain relief targetted more to IBS symptoms rather than surgery (for now) so it feels like a small victory and I think it’s important to treat it like one. BUT the general chaos has caught up with me and I know I’m trying to cram too much in at the moment. Although they’re all positive things that will improve life in the long run, the combination of them is exhausting and finally, this weekend, I have a couple of days to regroup and readjust. I try really hard to handle things practically and as efficiently as possible these days, rather than let my worries build up and feel like something unmanageable. This is a lot easier said than done and luckily I’m in quite a stable and positive mental state at the moment which helps HUGELY in the organising of my day to day routine. For me, it helps to divide my life into five sections: uni, work, money, health and social life. Instead of feeling completely overwhelmed by a swirling mass of problems, I’ll think about how I can improve each of them in small ways and it feels a lot less daunting. I often feel like as one gets worse, so does another. What happened this past couple of weeks goes like this: work was busy and stressful, so uni work suffered. I was feeling tired and ill so was spending money on unnecessary things to perk myself up as well as more expensive food because I had no time to food shop. I got my period which along with being mega painful, turned into a vicious coldy run down bug which dragged on for longer than it should have because I wasn’t letting myself rest. And the idea of a social life at this point is laughable, although going for a drink on Monday night in an attempt to be a regular carefree young person resulted in me throwing up all of Tuesday because my body likes to punish me for trying to be normal. And why the throwing up? Probably because I’m out of my stomach meds and had no time to get them as well as the fact that I’ve started a new contraceptive pill which has historically given me an upset belly for the first couple of months. Constant, niggling, little problems that add up total stressy meltdown if not monitored. Incredibly boring explanations aside, I guarantee that if you separate your life into sections right now and try to think up easy solutions to the problems in each you might feel a bit less overwhelmed. If you’re thinking that this method seems familiar - you got me. It’s typically used in CBT sessions for anxiety and quite honestly it’s the only useful technique I ever got out those sessions. I’m thinking I’m gonna do a post on each of these five topics separately because I have been blessed with two solid days off and also - there’s a lot of shit to get through. For now let’s talk about moneeeeys and how to not lose it all on paying for meds! Essentially, financial help means a million forms that can be difficult to fill in. As I’m a student I can claim for DSA (Disabled Students Allowance) which is relatively straight forward. If you’re in education and suffer from endometriosis or any long term health condition (including a mental health condition) it’s definitely worth getting in touch with the Disability team at your college/university. I initially felt as if I wasn’t ‘ill’ enough to be entitled to help from them but a quick chat with them let me know that they would help me in any way they could. Sometimes you get so used to the complications and negative aspects of managing illness that you forgetting they’re even happening to you, and it’s useful to make a third party aware of that they can remind that you that you do need extra support. I’m also applying for financial help with prescriptions and travel costs through the NHS, using an HC1 form, Again, this is a super long, boring form to fill out and because I now have a part time job I’m not sure what I’ll be entitled to. But it really is all worth doing and you never know what you might gain from it. Head to the NHS website and you’ll find a form for almost every situation that is usually worth having a skim through. You can also go to a local pharmacy and ask if they carry any of these forms or even if they have a moment to speak to you about getting financial help with prescriptions and hospital visits. The same can be said for your GP and they’re usually very willing to help. Aside from HC1 (and HC2) forms, there are Prescription prepayment certificates which allow you pay for prescriptions in 3-month or 12-month blocks which ultimately saves you money and mean you pay no more than £2 a week for the meds. Obviously, this is dependent on how many prescriptions you’re currently on, and this is something I need to speak to my GP about because I am confused and maths is not my strong point. There’s also a page specifically for students on a low income here. On that note, a lot of the financial stuff is difficult to get your head around and it might be helpful to ask a friend/colleague/medical professional to help you understand it, especially if you’re pain and have a lot on your plate already. The theme that will run through these posts is this: don’t be afraid to ask for what you need. Even if it feels difficult or awkward at first, it will get easier as soon as you realise how much it will benefit you and how willing people are to help. If you buy any over the counter medication AT all, always ask your GP if it is cheaper on prescription because it often will be. This goes for any pain you may have, even if it isn’t necessarily related to your condition. For example, I would pay a fortune for fancy herbal IBS remedies and peppermint oil capsules and god knows what else when there is usually a very similar product available in bulk from the GP (i.e. mebeverine/colofac). This was also the case with the antihistamines I was taking and can even go as far as medicines you buy and don’t think about like antacids and vitamins. It’s always worth explaining your situation to your doctor and seeing if there is a more cost effective option. The same rule applies when you are buying over the counter, for example when you don’t have time to get a prescription or when what you need can’t be prescribed (like my beloved heat patches waaahh). The pharmacy will have branded products and then they’ll have other options with IDENTICAL ingredients for a fraction of the price. Ask the pharmacist for the cheapest possible option as long as it has the same desired effects and basic ingredients. Don’t buy health stuff from Poundland though because in my experience you will get a rash (and use their heat pads with extreme caution - they’re lethal). LASTLY, sounds like an obvious one but it’s where I often let myself down health wise - know what to eat to make you feel good and always have a lot of it in the house! Ultimately you never know when you’ll be struck down by your temperamental illness and it’s best to be prepared and not fall into bad habits (like constantly ordering pizza even tho it is godly and delicious). My advice is to online grocery shop (Asda is a great option with only £20 min delivery) and stock up on cheap, healthy food whilst monitoring what you spend. My latest trick is to always have excellent smoothie ingredients in so that if I’m mega busy and feeling run down I can make super nutritious, filling, vitaminy, tasty, drinkable meals. Vitaminy is a word, I’ve decided. Have a gander at Holland and Barrett’s website as they always have mega good deals on vitamins and smoothie mixes to keep your immune system in a good state! But also don’t replace meals with smoothies because that’s mad. Also eat non liquid food plz. Next post will beeeee… how to stay sane when your employer doesn’t give a fuck that you’re in debilitating pain! Or more eloquently put: knowing your rights in the workplace as someone with a disability. Hope this made some vague sense and feel free to message me with questions!

5 reasons to study pharmacy at the University of Sydney
Why should you study pharmacy with Australia’s first pharmacy school? The university asked their current students and alumni why they chose to study pharmacy at the University of Sydney. Here are their top 5 reasons to study pharmacy at Sydney Uni.
1. Diverse range of career opportunities
“I love the different opportunities that the degree offers its graduates—the ability to move from one specialty to another, industry positions and extensive research and teaching opportunities.” – Reham Raid Mansour Soro, MPharm first-year student
Most people assume that there is only one career outcome when you study pharmacy: to become a pharmacist. But studying a pharmacy degree can lead to more than simply becoming a pharmacist. Pharmacists are an important part of the healthcare system. Their skills and knowledge can be applied across a range of careers, allowing for employment opportunities in
community pharmacy
hospital pharmacy
academic or research institutions
pharmaceutical industry in a wide range of roles from marketing, business development or finance to compliance and drug development.
Take Abbie Lawrie, Bachelor of Pharmacy graduate from 2009 who is now working for GlaxoSmithKline:
“Working in finance for GSK has allowed me to combine my pharmacy background with my interest in finance and business. I chose to work in the “business side” of healthcare because of the opportunities it has provided me to work internationally, experience different roles and positively impact people’s lives on a large scale.”
2. Placement opportunities
“As a student at the University of Sydney I have had the privilege of working in city, metropolitan and rural community pharmacies as well as clinical placement in a pharmaceutical company. I would say that clinical placement was the most valuable part of my degree, thanks to the great support and guidance I received from my preceptor. It’s so satisfying to go to work in the afternoon and apply the skills and knowledge I had only just learned that morning during class.” – Ardi Mirzaei, BPharm 2013
To prepare you for the workforce, the Faculty of Pharmacy offers students a range of clinical and rural work placements. Clinical placements are important to put theory into practice in community, hospital, rural or industrial settings. All pharmacy students undertake clinical placements during their degree, and are encouraged to consider a rural placement as part of their clinical training.
This helps you stand out from your peers when you are starting to look for career opportunities after your studies.
3. Unique curriculum with a focus on practical experience underpinned by world-class research
“The Bachelor of Pharmacy is so much more than being a specialist in medications and drugs. You gather skills to educate people on medication, you collaborate with doctors to ensure patients get the best care, you tell patients key things to look out for and do what you can to help each and every patient in the community.”- Matthew Huang, BPharm fourth year student
You will learn from world-leading academics that teach a unique course curriculum focused on all practical and theoretical areas of pharmacy to prepare you for the workforce. The Faculty of Pharmacy is ranked 16th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for pharmacy and pharmacology and has a proven record in teaching and learning excellence.
“My positive experience undertaking research during my undergraduate honours year encouraged me to pursue further studies in pharmaceutical research. I have always been fascinated with the human body but what really inspired me was trying to find a way to improve quality of life.” Samuel Ho, BPharm 2011 / PhD 2016
Research at the Faculty of Pharmacy is focused on improving health outcomes in cancer, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, health services and patient safety, mental health and respiratory disease.
4. Professional network and support
“The Faculty of Pharmacy has a great sense of community. You are taught by academics with backgrounds from all different fields of pharmacy. The staff were supportive and always available to help. The structure of the course meant that there were lots of opportunities to learn about different career pathways available after graduation through clinical placements and careers events.”- Cassandra Cameron, MPharm 2013
Faculty staff are dedicated to supporting the learning opportunities of all pharmacy students. As a pharmacy student, not only will you be part of a cohesive and supportive cohort, you will also receive support from world-leading academics in deciding on career pathways, clinical placements research opportunities and general guidance throughout your degree.
The Sydney University Pharmacy Association (SUPA) is one of the larger student societies on campus, organising regular academic, professional and social activities. SUPA members also gain membership to the National Australian Pharmacy Students Association (NAPSA).
5. Make a difference in the healthcare system
“I chose pharmacy because I want to equip myself with the knowledge and skills required to make a meaningful contribution to the Australian healthcare system. The course combines my interest in chemistry and mathematics with my passion to address social and health-related challenges.” – Melissa Barakat, BPharm 2015
A career in pharmacy means making a difference to the Australian healthcare system. Whether you are working directly with patients and their families in community pharmacy or in a hospital setting or research in an academic or professional institution, your career will have a meaningful impact on Australian healthcare.
