have severely slacked re:posting - term happened. it was a lot. finished up my last supervision essay of term this morning. since my last post i've nailed down three chapters of my dissertation. nine essays + a dissertation in an eight week term isn't for the week. hence my absolutely pathetic posting consistency

fingers crossed i'll have more time for tumblr-ing over the easter break. term ends on thursday, i go home on saturday. there is indeed a light at the end of the tunnel! yippee!

wonder if Roodaka managed to string Vakama along because, amongst other things (hordika brain fog, variegated promises, feminine wiles and whatnot), she posed herself as a mentor to him

Vakama has had like three mentor-like figures before her between Nuhriii, Lhikan and Norik, and the only one that at this moment in time he could have considered successful was Nuhrii on account of the fact that he was the one to teach him mask making and was eventually bested by him, though that drove him to jealousy; Lhikan was a very distant figure mostly for no fault of his own, had no real time to teach him anything, and by the time he's hordika Vakama has grown to resent the fact that he turned him into a Toa apparently ruining his life; Norik tries to offer him comfort and guidance by nudging him into the right direction, but by this point Vakama feels so lost and disoriented and useless that he feels those nudges like jabs and refuses to cooperate

Roodaka instead railroads him sort of like he was a matoran again. she gives him tasks and a certain etiquette to follow and leads him to what she claims is greatness through a series of steps that assure him he doesnt have to think about any of it, that someone else has it under control for him. and he falls for it hook line and sinker because hes just so tired of fucking up and finally someone is telling him as clearly as possible how to succeed for once in his stupid life and he cant let go of the possibility that finally hell achieve something

There is something about the one spotlight on the center of the room, in between them, but leaning more towards Fadel that (under the assumption that this scene uses a big spotlight from above as a metaphor/visual representation for the ever watchful eyes of God, or that it applies Foucault's theory that being seen is the start of being punished) says a lot about the scene and visually represents the conversations they have. The whole place/room is being watched, with the chairs all standing under the light, so anybody who comes to the meetings is being seen. They come here to share their feelings and lay themselves bare, so it makes sense.

But because Fadel comes here often and it is more his confessional than it is Styles, when it is just the two of them the light leans more towards him. This, together with the fact that they are discussing Fadels problems and his emotions, makes it feel like he is more in the focus, being watched more.

Later, when Style joins him on his lap (and under the light), he shows that he is there not just for Fadel but with him as well. What Fadel will be judged for, so will he. Because they are one and they stand together. This message is, ofcourse, reflected in Styles words, but it is nice that they emphasized it with the lighting as well.

Also (working within Foucault's theory) there is power in seeing and submission/powerlessness in being seen, so for Style to sit on Fadel's lap making it so that they are both unable to see eachother, because they have their head on eachothers shoulders, (other than giving physical comfort also) puts them on an even level of both not seeing or being seen. So that Fadel will no longer feel watched and judged.

(Might also be why Fadel likes stuffing his face into Styles neck. It's hot ofc, but I've discussed many times that Style is very observant, even when they kiss (and more) so kissing Styles neck assures that for a moment he cant look at Fadels face)

jesus fucking christ, was editing and preparing my textbook of exam notes for later printing, and got jumpscared by receiving an email from my uni with our class' grades and list of academic debts from past assignments or term papers. i am happy to announce i am one of 9 people out of 26 students of our major who has all passable grades and zero debts. bitch maybe i will actually graduate if the bar is this low

The second the linguistics textbook goes "you can use your intuition here for a first impression/to try figure this out before we get to the theory!" I just laugh and skip ahead to the theory because frankly, almost nothing about linguistics is intuitive to me.
