I just finished rereading the Spiderwick Chronicles and...man, I had read them as a kid but I'm so glad I decided to re-read them as an adult. I've gone through ups and downs with my art but sometimes I'll just have a story like this rekindle why I love making art so much.
I remember loving the drawings as a kid, but now as an adult I find myself absolutely entranced when looking at the illustrations, and I love that I can find a whole new appreciation for art like that. And not to downplay the writing either, the descriptions are so incredible, I genuinely love the characters so much and they're so endearing to read about all over again.
Anyways, for what I actually drew! At the back of the edition I have there were some unused sketches by Tony DiTerlizzi, and one of the sketches had the characters Thimbletack and Hogsqueal playing checkers together from a scene in the last chapter of the book. Something about it was just extra adorable and at first wanting to just draw it myself it then spiraled into drawing a whole illustration based on it haha. Overall I'm really happy with how it turned out!

UPDATE: If only all of the decisions I made could be this good. 😋
Just put peanut butter AND honey on my toast because I'm an adult and no one can stop me!

So... yeah, in case anyone was wondering, as far as adaptations go... The Spiderwick Chronicles series is really bad. Not even the same story. Like... major plot points changed, it was unnecessarily dark (literally and figuratively... seriously! Can we please just stop filming movies and shows so that you still struggle to see after turning the screen brightness up the whole way?), characters were added for no reason at all, a romantic side plot was added for no reason at all, how people were related was changed for the sole purpose of adding extra drama... there were no goblins or hobgoblins (ya know... a pretty major part of the plot). The target audience is wrong. I see "Spiderwick" and want to share the wonder and whimsy of my childhood with my children. I do not want a dark gritty retelling that I can't show them until they are practically an adult and couldn't care less what I'd like to show them from my childhood.
*Please note: I'm not saying it wasn't entertaining to watch. It was alright. It had some decent effects and nice creature design. Thimbletack was very cute! I doubt I'll rewatch it, and I probably won't recommend it to many people. What I am saying is that it is a bad *adaptation.* This was not an adaptation. This was an alternative universe fanfiction that feeds off of nostalgia without actually understanding what people are nostalgic for. It was cool to see a free streaming company pick up a series like this and try their hand at it, and as I said, they did a good job in some areas. I hope they can learn from both the good and the bad and do better in the future.

🕸️ Lucinda’s Secret (The Spiderwick Chronicles #3) by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
After being attacked by goblins, rescuing an injured griffon, and being targeted by Thimbletack, things can’t get any worse, can they? A series of mysteries and thefts lead the Grace siblings to another strange and curious end- their old Aunt Lucinda.
This one didn’t feel as fast-paced as the previous two books but I loved the faerie trickery and meeting the elves in the woods. Once one question is answered, another pops up and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Day 10: Ancient
Tumblr media
The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black
The Spiderwick Chronicles is an amazing book series, and the book's lore of the Faerie world feels ancient and mysterious. The books have magical creatures of many different sizes, and I've always had a soft spot for the Brownie Thimbletack! My favourite of the main three human characters was Mallory: she's so cool, and her fencing skills are awesome (not to mention useful)! The books are really well-written, but short. The movie adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles was pretty good and I liked it, but the books have much more detail.
