going thru all the lifting/racking tags on tumblr because i miss the lifting subreddit and thinking man. Why Is Everyone In Here Acting 12 and then the more i think about it its like oh yeah who else on planet earth would publicly post crimes they can be traced back to for aesthetic reasons. “hiiii here’s my itemized list of everything i took today, the prices, and what stores i went to so the cops can search thru all the camera footage and look for me easier and also clock fines on me for stuff they didnt even see me take!! ^_^ hehe”
HEY GUYS,
DO NOT POST TOO MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
DO NOT POST IDENTIFYING INFORMATION ABOUT YOURSELF.
DO NOT USE THE OBVIOUS #SHOPLIFTING TAGS, OR ANY LIKE THEM TO SHARE METHODS OR TIPS.
DO NOT USE TIKTOK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM SOCIAL MEDIA TO TALK ABOUT LIFTING HABITS (YOU SHOULDN’T EVEN BE POSTING IT ON TUMBLR. if you want to talk about it so badly, i recommend maybe a groupchat or something not publicly accessible.)
WHEN YOU DO THESE, YOU ARE RUINING IT FOR THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY AND/OR INCRIMINATING YOURSELF.
also, keep in mind that poor and homeless people lift, and they typically have a way harder time than you do because poor/homeless looking people get immediate suspicion from LP. (this can also include like, all minorities depending on how racist the people working are.) don’t make it harder for them. don’t make your store up their security because you took too much too fast, and now a possible source of food or income is closed off from people who can’t afford a magnet or fancy tag tool like you can.
people take stuff for different reasons. we all need to look out for each other’s backs. don’t fuck this kind of thing up for all of us.

[main character] sleeps and dreams they're walking through the park, never getting anywhere just continuously walking. one night he sees a light, a campfire. weird, hes never seen that before but hes tired of walking every night with no progress
he gets closer to see the group of creatures, he cant fully focus on them nor can he tell who they are. but they dont feel dangerous, so he approaches but right before he hits the ring of light he wakes up. next night he gets slightly closer but no one in the circle has noticed him yet. this goes on for the next week or so
finally one of the closer creatures, who he still cant quite look at, looks up and notices him, hes so close he could reach out and touch the back of his head. "so good of you to finally join us, friend" and suddenly he can move much easier, walks naturally to find their own seat around the fire
these creatures, some of them are tall and faceless, not talking or moving. some are large and furry and eating food he cant recognize. some arent moving so much so hed almost guess theyve grown into the ground. some watch him with intelligent eyes, but its more curiosity than hunting
he talks without moving his lips, somehow to himself yet to the whole group. "is this a dream?" one of the furry creatures responds "of course, my friend. but that doesnt make it any less real, so for tonight enjoy yourself"
he spends more and more time each night there at the park, and everyday he looks forward to the nighttime so he can be surrounded by these creatures who feel so otherworldly yes calm and good to him
one of the nights, hes offered a drink, which he graciously accepts. the drink, an indescribable smooth, almost buttery drink, so sweet and warm it instantly made him tingle
the next day, he feels distracted, empty almost? he writes it off as just an off day, god knows he gets those plenty. all the more reason to look forward to the park. he even makes a detour that day after work to the same park, finding the spot he would usually sit in. but its almost as if his body is confused, he feels warm yet tense, like somethings not quite right, the worlds shifted too far to the left, so he goes home shortly after
that night hes greeted by the creatures. "hello my friend, so glad youve joined us tonight" hes already feeling better, but, still tired, he takes a seat without much fanfare. the chatter of the creatures continues over him as he loses himself in the noise, in the feeling it brings him
several nights continue like this, no matter how much he sleeps he cant get his energy back, and no matter how much coffee he drinks hes still exhausted. where longer visits before would revitalize his mind and body, now they seem to have little to no effect. he grows more and more tired, and continues to the park every night, hoping to find the comfort it once gave him
"hey man, whats up with you? is something happening at work? do i need to threaten your boss?" he waved his friend off, laughing lightly. "I'm fine, i promise. just been really tired, not sleeping well i guess..." "okay, if you say so. im just worried about you, you dont seem yourself"
"is there something the matter, young friend? youve not spoken in a while to anyone. dont tell me you grow weary of our company so early?" "no of course not, ive just felt..... ive never felt so.... dizzy"
every night he grows heavier, his words grow weaker until they stop working. his breath feels heavy and its so much energy to just lift his head up. hes being absorbed into the ground until he can barely move, not that he could even try
of course each day hes not there he feels more disconnected, spacey and not real. his friends and family worry for him but he assures them that hes completely fine and he'll call them if he needs help

i was the anon who sent the eyeroll dream thing and genuinely actually do you have any feelings about like dream and by extension sapnap trying to assert themselves into pop off trio streams
because i’m not gonna lie as much as i love dream and sapnap and yeah the going dark thing was funny, they do have this problem where they show up and get confrontational about not being invited and when they do that shit and put everyone on the spot about “being left out” it’s very weird to me you should just accept they want to have a stream alone right..? i was wondering what you thought about that and whether you think they genuinely feel threatened about being left out
like let george hang out with his other friends maybe i doubt they’d do this if it was quackity and karl with anyone else or even just them alone
also i’m too much of a coward to discuss this on my own main idk if you know who this is but i have a feeling it’s smth you agree with and it’s veryyy nice to see someone calling sapnap and dream out for their occasional annoying and stream ruining behaviour
sorry this is so long!! you also totally don’t have to answer btw lmao i just notice the same frustration sometimes through your liveblogging whenever sapnap and dream crash a stream
anonymous: wait wait to add onto my last ask it was the biggest power move for karl to announce that the sex havers only consists of george karl and quackity and i really felt like that was a hint drop from him, i think jokingly adding that anyone else is “a friend of sex havers” was to lessen the impact but i still enjoy the fact that he asserted (and has been asserting) that their group when they’re together is an exclusive trio
i felt it that time he was like yeah well. we were the original sex havers groupchat and i feel like sapnap and dream kinda wriggled themselves into being included like i hope none of this sounds mean i just really want dream and sapnap to understand it’s okay to not be included in everything
oh MAN do i have feelings 😩 dream and sapnap are almost comically emasculated by any little thing that makes them feel inferior and that includes being excluded from things. and i personally feel they have no right to get angry about being left out and to then show up onto their streams to express that theyre upset in front of an audience of thousands. i say this because the other three ALWAYS mention that they dm'd them and invited them to the activity or otherwise said they had reason to believe dream or sapnap wouldnt be available (and even outside of that, theyre not required to tell the other about every single one of their plans lol)
i think getting confrontational about it on stream in the middle of planned activities is childish. take a look at bad for example, who also isnt a part of the trio but doesnt get confrontational about having been left out. the trio is full of lighthearted people, bad came into the call and they asked him if he wanted to join in the game they were playing and he did and that was it. compare that to dream or sapnap and when they join calls. theyre consistently immediately accusatory. the trio will take it in stride (cus again. an audience of over 100k is watching. its really not the time and place to whine and get mad about feeling left out, those are convos to have in private), theyll throw some facts like "we invited you" "you said you were busy" "we already had this planned for a while" etc., then theyll offer an invitation to join. this invitation is usually met w quite frankly STUPID debate about "well why wasnt i included in the first place" like dude. read the room, youre streamers for a living, talk about these things off stream like an adult. plus they literally already said you could join if you still wanted to, whats the problem, why drag it out for longer than it needs to be. it just stalls the stream and their plans and shifts the lighthearted tone into somethin a little more careful (however briefly it might be, it didnt need to happen)
i LOVE karl for saying that theyre their own group and joking that their attitude is why theyre friends of sex havers. it felt like a lighthearted way to lift the mood again and kinda say "hey, we do our own things sometimes, chill"
i cant speak for whether i think they genuinely feel threatened about being left out cus not only do i not know them personally, theyre also not ccs i focus energy on (thats for quackity and george 😌) i DO think that with all the times theyve brought it up when crashing the trio streams, they should really by this point have talked about it off screen. it feels almost like they use the audience as a safety net to avoid the consequence of intruding/being mean cus whoever theyre talking to has to keep a certain face and therefore cant say certain things (might even hazard a guess that off screen they probably still dont REALLY talk about it)
i dont blame them for wanting to be a part of things their friends are doing but i blame them for the way they express that. it makes the atmosphere tense by making it far too personal for something thats visible to a live public audience.
i know theyre around the same age, but the way dream an sapnap handle conflict on screen IS immature vs the way quackity and karl do. quackity and karl have been entertainers for A WHILE and understand how to stay entertaining and theyre far more aware of their audience and the overall mood and how to handle problems and conflict without things getting too tense. dream and sapnap (sapnap moreso) have a habit of being confrontational and not lightening the mood and instead continuing to be mad, making everyone else in the call responsible for the energy of the stream instead of them themselves dealing with the tenseness theyve caused. it makes things awkward and im always hoping itll end fast and that theyd please for the love of god talk about it off stream
thats worded a little dramatically cus its rarely ever THAT bad, but it would be SO much better if it just didnt happen yknow. if they understood that they dont have to be a part of everything their other friends do AND if they understood that getting mad on stream and stalling their plans and souring the vibe isnt the best way to handle it.
tl;dr: theyre their own group who do their own things and arent required to share their plans w the rest of their friends (and usually they dm in advance anyway asking if they wanna be a part of their plans). dream and sapnap feeling excluded isnt something they should get overly heated about on stream (its an immature way to bring up the issue especially without ever offering a solution). these are problems they should talk about off stream where the trio dont have to be so conscious about their audience and its perception. i love karl and quackity for emphasizing that theyre their own group with their own plans and joking that the way they act is WHY theyre not part of the group. i think they deal w it as well as they can and i think dream and sapnap need to learn just a little more spacial awareness and how to handle conflict
edit: quackity/karl/george should be fully able to have their own stream together without anyone else intruding. dream and sapnap arent their bosses, they dont need to run all their plans by them first. if they want to have streams with just their own established group, they should be able to have that.

oohohoho you just opened the deepest can of worms on the planet
-mod dave, who wrote a fucking ten mile essay
first off, addressing the second anon, no theyre all humans. h., half humans at least. cause yall know me i fucking love my humanstuck aus off my ASS
(that would be funny as hell though. a troll from space walking into a camp on earth going “I AM THE SON OF ONE OF YOUR EARTH GODS. BITCH” like... holy shit)
so first things first their parents. im gonna lay this out, the beta kids and trolls are all greek (EXCEPT sollux hes roman cause his parent has no greek equivalent), and all the alpha kids and trolls are those gods roman equivalents (,,EXCEPT dirk cause he kinda balances sollux being roman out). i havent figured out how thatd happen like 16+ times yet cause in the percy jackson books theres only ever been one instance of two siblings of the same godly descent being greek and roman respectively in HISTORY so like.. i guess th. i guess thats just not a problem in this au
anyway this gets really long so im gonna talk about the beta kids and trolls cause i havent elaborated on the alphas at all ((peep the tags if you wanna see their parents though))
johns the son of zeus, rose is the daughter of athena, dave is the son of apollo, and jade is the daughter of demeter. they were all raised in their respective states, all had to come to new york for various reasons. jades been there the longest, shes been there 9 years and shes been on a couple quests. her biggest accomplishment so far is how she protected the camp from this big vicious angry hellhound that got past the barrier. naturally the girls fluent in Dog Training, so she steps up and instead of trying to kill this thing, she reaches out and tames it as fast as she can. it ends up actually working, and ever since that day she, her cabin, and the camp have a whole bodyguard sleeping right outside the demeter cabin! hes her steed in battle and hes a Very Good Boy. and his name is becquerel
johns the newest kid at camp, he has no idea who he is or why the fuck his school got attacked or why in the hell those anemoi thuellai were so fixated on him or HOW in the hell he absorbed the lightning one threw at him and ended up fine,,, hes just a big mess right now. a big enough mess that when he got claimed by literally zeus, no one else was around, he shrugged it off as some basic magical happening, and he stayed in the hermes cabin far longer than he should have cause no one! fucking knew he got claimed! by zeus of all people! dumbass. he ends up figuring it out though. like an off-hand mention about how this “weird lightning thing appeared above my head a couple weeks ago, haha weird right?” once he figures it out he realizes “hey i might be able to fly” so he sneaks off into the woods to try it. he succeeds fairly quickly but god almighty everyones face the one day the dude just yote himself off a small cliff without warning,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
dave and rose are really tight, theyve been there roughly the same time length, and since their cabins are across from each other they just bother each other all the time. daves the resident Doctor even though he really doesnt look it cause hes got the apollo powers. apollo is the medicine god. so if you wound your stupid ass in battle daves in the ER room patching you up with his glowy hands. rose on the other hand is a very good strategist. shes one of the only athena kids ever recorded to actually have a power - telekinesis. she has no idea how she developed it, she thinks its from birth, but it freaks her out. shes training it though.
so the beta trolls, are also all human(ish). aradias hades kid. but i pulled a pjo trope on her based on one of my favorite characters (im not saying for spoilers, but if you recognize the situation, You Probably Know Who Its Based Off) and aradia died. her mom, the handmaid, had been pulling some Shady Ass Shit and ended up getting herself killed, but aradia tried saving her and ended up going down with her.
so handmaid gets sentenced to the fields of punishment in the underworld, and aradia gets sentenced to elysium, heroes paradise. shes like “no i want my mom to be okay” so they take that away from aradia and they put them both in the fields of asphodel, the neverending grey space for Not So Good But Not So Bad people. her mom becomes a shade (shadow spirit, no human resemblance), as all people do, but aradia. doesnt? and she gets dunked in the fucking river lethe and if you dont know what that does it erases your memory. so she just. comes out of the river like “hello? wgat tae fukc goin on??” but she still remembers one thing. there was an “a” in her name.
tavros is the son of hermes, hes just kinda taken on the role of backup counselor for when the actual cabin counselor is out. hes in a wheelchair, but he also has prosthetic legs for when he needs to actually stand up and fight. hes really good at it too. also catch him in winged converse cause he Owns Those and Uses Them To His Advantage. hes trying his best to keep focused on the camp, cause aradia was his childhood friend, he misses her a whole lot, she never got to camp in the first place. and to his knowledge, shes still dead.
sollux is a janus kid. thats a problem cause janus is roman, and this is a greek camp. he grew up with dave, he showed up with dave, hes been at camp as long as dave. but hes been unclaimed since he showed up so he thinks hes unwanted by whatever parent he has. he knows hes a demigod, he got through the camp barriers, so what the fuck is wrong with him? he also feels shitty cause hes shit at the greek lessons, he cant read a lick of it which literally every demigod without exception should be able to do, he cant name any gods- well, he can, but.. he gets their names mixed up. why does he keep calling poseidon “neptune”? and he has a much, much different way of natural fighting than other kids. they slice, he jabs. he wasnt taught to jab.
karkat is an aphrodite kid with vitiligo, and to make matters worse, hes ace and on the aro spectrum. to make matters WORSE, the aphrodite kids are kinda notorious for being really shallow, really materialistic, and really mean. karkats been dubbed the “runt” of the cabin, he gets made fun of for his spots to the point where he uses make up and magic to conceal them. worst of all? hes the kid of the goddess of love, for fucks sake. being reminded that “loveless people shouldnt be able to stay in this cabin, mom must have made a mistake claiming you” is kind of.. a blow to the self esteem. long story short he hates aphrodite for claiming him, and would have rather stayed in the hermes cabin. but he eventually goes on this big quest thats vague as fuck right now but Its The Main Plot, he ends up proving to himself that hes worth something and that his siblings are wrong, and my FAVORITE LINE IN THE WHOLE THING i came up with is HIS when he deals a final blow to some big monster: “REMEMBER MY FACE THE NEXT TIME YOU REINCARNATE. MY NAME IS KARKAT VANTAS, I’M THE SON OF APHRODITE, AND LOOKS CAN KILL.”
nepeta isnt anywhere near developed as others are unfortunately, shes a daughter of ares and shes really really good at hand to hand combat. shes small but she leads groups of people in things ranging from camp volleyball games to actual literal wars. shes a tough little shit
kanaya isnt really developed either, i have yet to figure out most of her powers too actually, shes a daughter of iris, the rainbow goddess though. (blatant reference to both kanayas vampirism and. h. her. sh. es ga. gay) ONE THING SHE CAN DO THOUGH is iris message at will without water or drachmas so really shes just everyones go to cell phone and its fucking hilarious cause people just come into the cabin like “KANAYA I NEED TO TALK TO [X]” and shes like “You Better Fucking Pay Me I Am Not Your Personal Cell Phone”
terezi is the daughter of nemesis and she has this really peculiar power she hasnt really gotten the hang of yet. she has synesthesia, so while she cant see she can smell and taste the colors of her surroundings and its really helpful. sometimes though she gets messages from her mom. they dont even come as dreams half the time, they come as almost a different plane altogether. tez has the power to literally tip the scales, pretty much. and when she gets like that, she can see. shes not on earth though, shit on earth stops when shes like that. shes just kinda In Her Own Head, i guess? and in her head she holds the two scales in her hands. she is the arms of the scale. and depending on which one she lifts up, she can literally alter the fate of the battle or happening thats going on By Herself. once she chooses she just whooshes back to real life though and nothing has changed. the only downside? it takes a LOT of energy and cant be exploited for little things. her one thing on her bucket list is to tap into said powers while getting something from a vending machine so like three things will fall out but it hasnt happened yet and shes upset
vriskas a daughter of tyche, the luck goddess, come the fuck on you knew i was gonna, i havent really elaborated on her either and im upset about that. but hey now you get a break from all those fucking paragraphs
equius is a hephaestus kid, and he kinda stays in the background. hes a range fighter, he spends a lot of time in the forge, and even though its been a project looooong since forgotten, hes been excavating the tunnels under cabin nine for years. by himself. he has no idea where they lead, but dammit hes gonna find out where. he has no idea about a certain bunker in the woods though...
gamzees just there for a fucking laugh tbh hes a son of dionysus and i love that cause hes the god of wine and parties and insanity. usually gamzees just zoning out somewhere hes Not supposed to be, and hes not affected by the maenads FUCKED UP BULLSHIT that goes down the forest sometimes. also hes so fucking scared of tavroses wing shoes he tried them on once while he was high and JESUS CHRIST
eridan is the son of kymopoleia, a SUPER obscure goddess. lets just say dont fuck with eridan cause his mom is the goddess of violent sea storms,
and naturally, feferi is the daughter of poseidon. cause who the FUCK else would she be the daughter of. WHO. NAME ONE GOD
OH AND JUST CAUSE I FORGOT CALLIE AND CALIBORN ARE SATYRS IN THIS AU. CALLIE HAS PAN PIPES. and caliborn still has a gun

Lil Cal 6:51 PM
You've been incredibly restless since two? days ago? There was a fun little game inbetween that manages to lighten your mood for a little (and the older Dirk complimented your laugh!!), but there's still this fear nagging on you.
So the next time you find yourself in the Doc's office, you don't hide away in a corner. You're right there at his table, half leaning on it and staring at him. Hi. I'm here. Pay attention to me.
Doc Scratch 6:54 PM
Despite Cal being in your office, you dont notice him at first, working away in one of your notebooks until you get that nagging feeling at the back of your head. Like someone is watching you. You look up and lift an eyebrow at him. "Yes, Cal. Can I help you?"
Lil Cal 6:59 PM
Finally. Took him long enough. "Angel got arrested" you just say.
Doc Scratch 7:17 PM
"I'm aware. Are you worried for him?"
Lil Cal 7:20 PM
You press your lips together. Letting Scratch know just how much you care about Dirk isn't on your to-do list for today, but your smiley pokerface fails you. "Get him out."
Doc Scratch 7:29 PM
At that, you look up from your writing, pen paused mid stroke. You give him a once over before continuing. An interesting development. "I could. But why?"
Lil Cal 7:44 PM
Hm. Don't like that. He knows, don't he? At least he knows now. Damn it. Think, Cal. "He's too new. If you want him to be a reliable member, he needs to feel like you can protect him. Instead of dropping him like hot coal. And he's too promising to drop."
Doc Scratch 7:54 PM
"Too new, indeed. In my experience a boy like that could use a little jail time, toughen him up." Cal vouching for Dirk as well. Not that you trust his judgement at all. "You like him." You close your notebook and set the pen aside, giving Cal your full attention.
Lil Cal 9:07 PM
You look offended. You are actually are, but mostly about him pointing it out. The comment goes ignored though. "Toughening up didn't work with the numbers either. They're a mess."
January 24, 2019
Doc Scratch 3:41 PM
Oh, so the puppet has some pointers for you, does he. You visibly stiffen at his implication. "Theyve always been a mess. What they arent is soft." You wont be questioned by a barely functioning amalgam of your own creation, that is where you draw the line. "I might consider paying his bail, however. If you ask nicely."
Lil Cal 5:24 PM
You squint at him. He wants you to beg him. You don't beg. But Dirk.. Hnn. He's probably gonna do it anyway, but when? You huff a little. "You're not doing this for me. I don't need to ask." Pause. "Do it soon though."
Doc Scratch 5:48 PM
You shrug. "If Im not doing it for you, then you have no say in when it gets done. As far as I'm concerned you already show too much interest in the Striders than is healthy anyway."
Lil Cal 7:30 PM
Healthy and Cal are polar opposites. You purse your lips in a pout. So what if he knows. As long as he's not trying to stop you. "You're one to talk."
Doc Scratch 7:35 PM
"Yes, I am. I know from perfect example what dealing with them at any level can get you. Then again, who am I to judge. Maybe they enjoy having a pet doll around to coddle." You words come out harshly but your face remains cool. Haunted always by the Striders. Could it be youve had one in your midst all along you werent using?
Lil Cal 7:47 PM
"Of course they do. They like dolls." Well, most of them. All those you care about. Too much information? Whatever. You don't care to be berated any longer. You stare at him and repeat what you've come here for in the first place, the words resonating in Scratch's mind, much louder than the whisper you speak in.
GET HIM OUT.
Conversation done. Time to leave.
Doc Scratch 7:57 PM
You start at the sudden intrusion in your mind, but decide to leave it there. He can throw a fit all he likes, it wont change matters. You let him leave and return to your writing, making a note on the side to look into paying Dirks bail.

5am thoughts: theory: Story Of Light
is it called the Story of Light because its Shinee telling us and the whole entire world that they will no longer grief in sadness and that they've moved on and accepted what has happened? I'm sure we all know Shinee may still be sad (and maybe more than that) but what if this whole album is telling us that shinee, that all the members, Minho, Onew, Key, and Taemin are ready to have a new beginning? Like, they're ready to let all the sadness go and accept what has happened and that they will continue to work and grow.
What if You&I was about them talking about Jonghyun? Like, what if this song is about them trying to talk to Jonghyun? And theyre all trying to tell him that its hard when he's gone like they dont know what to do. "I’m the only one hurting, I may look fine I’m not easy, my feelings aren’t for decoration" And like they're all reminiscing their memories with him. All those good times that they're not ready to let go of. "A handful of memories, I laugh and remember every day" (okay the lyrics arent in order but JJJJust lemme finish and fyi, its gonna be a lOoong one). "There are countless stars in my heart, there’s one star that shines painfully I don’t want to grab it but I don’t want it to go out" okay in this part i think they maybe talking about Jonghyun. Maybe the stars represent people and "theres one star that shines painfully" might be Jonghyun. A star... someone really special to them... is hurting deep inside. Maybe Shinee is trying to tell us that although a celebrity or ANY person in general who may seem happy in front of the cameras or may seem happy in the outside in general is actually in deep pain inside. Dealing with self doubt, depression and all that and we just dont know :( "The things I can’t throw away make me smile" this is kinda self explanatory. Jonghyun, someone they love, someone they deeply cherish, someone they can't simply just let go of, someone who can always make them smile. You know? "I know that you’re being honest when you wish me well I’ll let you go easy, don’t think that you’re stepping on me" this is kinda hard to explain haha ahm.. maybe as time passes by, Jonghyun's absence is telling them to let go and move on and maybe they're mad with what he did? I DONT KNOW I DONT MEAN IT LIKE THAT! like mad, like?? how do i explain?? like maybe frustrated?? thats the best word i can think of right now riwjkrs they're frustrated but theyre not gonna blame it on him. like the good friends and brothers they are they will let it go easily.. UGH do i make sense? anyway. "I’ve let myself go to the wind and the rain that’s falling cooly But my feelings aren’t for decoration" okay so this is the part theyve told themselves that they really need yo accept what has happened. and maybe "my feelings arent for decoration" means that whatever they are feeling and whatever they are going through shouldnt be joked about in social media since its a serious matter and well ive seen some haters and some "new kpop fans" talk shit about this issue and honestly 😤 it makes me want to slap a bitch
Anyway
next song > UNDERCOVER
so the lyrics:
"I’m paddling my feet as busily underneath the surface with a calm expression on my face, You don’t know"
have u seen swans? how they paddle their legs under the water to move but above the water they seem so calm? like ballerinas, how their arms and body are always so graceful but their legs do all the work and stuff ¿¿?? okay im comparing the lyrics to swans and ballerinas because what if the boys are trying to tell us Jonghyun's situation and maybe also their's and other people who is suffering the same way? We don't always know what happens when we turn around. We don't always know when they're hurting. It's actually pretty easy to lie and fake a smile now a days so we always have to be careful with our loved ones. we dont always know what they're dealing with and one wrong move can cause a bomb to explode.
"Before the curtains rise, I’m always busy but when I’m standing before you I’m Acting cool"
Maybe theyre telling us that behind the scenes, theyre also suffering with personal or family issues. like every other person, celebrities have problems that they deal with too. they also have feelings. maybe on stage theyre smiling and having so much fun but backstage, theyre suffering? they cant breathe, they're overworked, theyre tired. sometimes they're forced to do things. Honestly for me, the kpop industry is so pressuring. you have to be this or that and if you cant you get criticized for it.
"I can’t let you know the things that are secretly happening now, now is not the time. I wait for the right moment, so that when you’ve realized it it’s too late."
Obviously most idols worry about their fans. Theyre worried when theyre fans are worried. its like a family thing we idol and fans have for each other yknow and maybe thats why sometimes they cant always speak up about whats really going on inside their mind. They cant always talk about it to the public bc sometimes people are so rude and so insensitive and leave comments like, "youre not depressed! youre just overthinking" bullshit, barbara. "you just need to hang out more" hMMmM :// ANYWAY thats why they dont really speak up alot. sometimes they cant even go to a psychiatrist privately because the media is always watching and once its on display, BOOm haters here and there talking bs and obviously WE wouldnt realize unless its TOO LATE!
"Like a black shadow is absorbed into the night, the night I dig deep beyond the consciousness, inside of you I’m Undercover"
I dont know how to begin with this.. its like once theyve hit rock bottom and they feel like nothing is gonna get better amd everything is just dark and gloomy. Maybe this is like the moving on part?? like the beginning of moving on. the depressive episode. And at first theyre just trying to hide everything. Just being undercover.
WAIT OMG OKAY SO MAYBE UNDERCOVER BEFORE YOU&I
so they got depressed over what happened and theyre trying to hide from everybody that theyre okay but theyre not and theyre just undercover. in you&i thats when they start reminiscing about jonghyun and talking to him. telling him they miss him and that for him, they're ready to accept and let go.
OKOK SO THE NEXT SONGS ARE WHEN THEY START BEING POSITIVE AGAIN !! YES GO SHINEE !! OUR STRONG KINGS !!!
so i dont really know the sequence i mean its already fucked up in the beginning so lets just go with whatever !!!
So in GOODEVENING!
"The cozy darkness is lingering far away"
so the 'darkness' or those gloomy days and toxic vibes theyve been surrounding themselves has been slwoly disappearing. they're starting to feel a little better again. <3
"At the tip of the sunset that hangs on the buildings I think of you"
i cant explain this one and note: i havent slept and its 6am but im still trying to make this work. but i think fjksjfks ok sunsets means like the day is "ending" and like before the day ends, they remember their sufferings while they were depressed and all those sad times with Jonghyun, like those times of grief.. they remember it all before starting a new day ¿¿ I DONT KNOW im trying my best to explain it. Its like theyre finally accepting what has happened and is ready to start a new happy day
"Spill out the darkness
Open the night
I wanna see you more, right now, oh"
So the sunsets and the night has come and theyve already accepted whats happend but they want to see Jonghyun in a different light. They want to see their bestfriend and brother as someone who was happy and made others happy. They want to remember Jonghyun as someone who made his parents and everyone around him proud.
"The moonlight is rising
I’m going to you before it’s too late
I’m going to get you
Imagining how surprised you’ll be, I’m going to you
Going to you
Going to you
Without a reason, going to you"
okay this part is like giving someone a hug before they leave for their flight. Like even when hes gone hes not alone and shinee is not alone. like theyre always together. theyll always be together. "imagining how surprised you will be" nrkanfks im thinkg on how to write thus part wo sounding sarcastic. knowing what jonghyun has been through, he might have thought that he was and always will be alone... but the members are there to guide him in his travel to heaven with their prayers and theyre all hoping to surprise him ¿¿ AAAA im sorry if this sounds sarcastic or offensive i REALLY didnt mean it to be that way >·<
literally, for me anway, the whole song is about how theyll always be there for each other. even when the other is far away, it will never stop them from what they are doing. and thats why i love Shinee so much💓
In jump im not gonna add a lot of lyrics since im getting lazier. (lmao you can see my effort fading from you&i until here)
in Jump the song is about them trying to put their pieces together again. They've been broken and torn apart but they're ready to pick theirselves up again.
"I shake my head, brush it off and adjust my heart
I solidly protect my space again"
no one can recover quickly so i guess in this part, they're trying to take things slow. not too fast or anything or else they might make a wrong move and fall back to square one.
"Keep on enduring it
Just close my eyes when it feels futile for no reason"
in this part, theyre still not that strong enough so theyre telling themselves that they should just endure the pain or sadness. if it feels impossible, just close your eyes, believe and trust in yourself. theyve made it this far, why should they quit now?
"Higher, rise higher, fly
There’s the ground beneath your feet
When I travel between the two
Oh yes I feel the freedom
I jump on you, jump on you"
when they finally overcome the fear and sadness and EVERYTHING! they feel the weight lift from their shoulders and finally they feel freedom. overjoyed, they celebrate by jumping¿¿ i guess?? lmAO
"I’m not falling
I’m not wilting
It’s just changes
I turn different
And keep going forward"
this is when they realize that: nothing is going bad. everything is going just fine and everything is great. maybe they havent fully recovered yet but all those depression and pain is finally gone and theyre happy. They're different now and they realize they can finally keep moving forward without feeling to fall back down again.
"Why is that hard Why did I hesitate for such a long time Following my heart away From other people’s eyes I free the feet that were bound I let my imagination loose after a long time The wind is blowing Now I open my eyes and breathe in"
the first 2 lines is probably them asking themsleves, why didnt we do this earlier? they finally followed what their heart wanted instead of being trapped in their own mind and they finally can breathe again. they feel free and loose. they dont feel the heavy chains hanging on their shoulder anymore !
Now I can open my eyes and breathe in.
this is honestly a HUGE step for them. and im so proud?? ugh..
last song: All Day All Night
"All the moments I met you were highlight I don’t regret it, it’s just beautiful"
Theyre remembering Jonghyun more with their happy memories. How his existence highlighted mostly everything in their past. Jonghyun was such a big part of their lives and even if he was gone, they were still happy that he was able to be part of their lives and they were thankful to be a part of his.
"I start to see the world differently Yeah it’s all for you Time starts to emit a light Yeah it’s all for you Our very painful tears The joy that fills ourh hearts All for you, all for you, all for you"
Theyre doing all these wonderful things all for Jonghyun and maybe also for us too and for themselves. "Time starts to emit light" its pretty self explanatory. theyre beginning to see things in a positive way again !! So all of this, this is all for Jonghyun.
"Leave it alone, hold me and my painful scars All of it is the control"
theyre telling us to maybe accept it and move on too. To move on with them. We're all in this together and everything is in control.
So YAAS thats my theory or whatever you call it for SHINEEs album. I really do think the message hidden behind this album is deep and amazing and VERY important. I'm glad SHINEE is able to see things in a new light. Let's just keep loving and supporting them, okay??! So that's it.
The Story Of Light.
The End.

uberASSIST Online Education Course: Assisting with Passengers with Specific Disabilities (3/4)
Tumblr media
Tracy Schmitt: thus far, weve pointed out uberASSIST and its benefits. Weve additionally mentioned learn how to keep up a correspondence with men and women with disabilities use person first and weve also broken down some limitations when assisting persons with disabilities, just with the aid of staring at, Asking, Listening, and finding out. Next up, we share just a few guidelines when working with seniors, or passengers with disabilities. These are going to be additionally to the instruments youve got already: man or woman first language, and WALL. Humans with mobility impairments are like myself. They are going to have trouble with their fingers, they may have mobility considerations with their legs, they may also use a guide folding wheelchair. Or they would use crutches, or they might be someone thats pregnant even. Up subsequent is a few guidelines to aid exceptionally with men and women with mobility impairments. So for Watch, its giving the consumer time to make their possess method.Probably they want somewhat extra persistence. For Ask, its actual for everyone to no longer contact without permission, its notably essential for people with a mobility impairment to no longer contact with out permission, mostly when you consider that it might knock them off their balance. And for listen, recollect, its ok if the man or woman says, No, thank you, to no longer aid. And for be trained, gain knowledge of what theyve asked. Study what theyve stated, learn what they want. If the client indicated, Please leave the brakes on, then thats the best thing to do. And that you may gain knowledge of for subsequent time, potentially my buyers going to want depart the brakes on. , many guide wheelchairs have the alternative of casting off the wheels.Wheelchairs can fold, and so they arent as heavy as you consider. Simply ask a purchaser, How am i able to support you? And they’ll describe to you learn how to fold their wheelchair, or how dismantling their personal chair is best. I normally say, in the event you dont understand, Ask. Now here’s a video on find out how to accommodate a passenger who makes use of a wheelchair. Just to support, riders are not to anticipate you to carry and a transfer them in or out of your auto. Folks that use guide wheelchairs on a day-to-day groundwork shall be able to carry and transfer themselves into your auto and not using a hindrance. So lets watch the video. Enjoy. Announcer VO: Passenger with a guide wheelchair. There are two types of wheelchairs: energy, and manual wheelchairs. Vigor wheelchairs require vehicles which have a lift or a ramp. Manual wheelchairs are available two varieties folding, and non-folding.Folding wheelchairs are collapsible, with the aid of casting off the seat cushion and pulling up the seat, by moving a free up bar, or pulling a twine. This kind of wheelchair can also be stowed quite simply in a automobile trunk, or in the back of a seat. Ask the passenger for his or her recommendation involving the great way to fold the chair. Non-folding wheelchairs can be with ease disassembled for stowage. The big rear wheels have a button in the centre of the wheel for elimination. Push the button in, hold, and pull the wheel straight out. To exchange the wheel, keep the button depressed unless the wheel is in situation. Then unencumber, and provides the wheel a tug, to make sure it is securely fastened.Continually lift these chairs through the frame, by no means by means of the wheels, armrests, or footrest. Ask the passenger the best way to set the brakes. Tracy: next up, we talk about folks with visual impairments, or humans who’re blind, and even humans who’re partially sighted. For the Watch, its additional fundamental to introduce your self. As a man or woman who is partly sighted, theyre extra more likely to be given assistance from their Uber driver than they are from a stranger on the avenue. For Ask, everybodys targeted and specific. If you wish to know the best way to aid anyone, its first-rate to claim, How can i aid you? Or, How am i able to guide you? Which leads us to pay attention and study, sort of in a combined manner. Each person is specific. Some persons could say, i can advisor myself, thanks. Some individuals may say, Please take my again. Am i able to take your shoulder? No one will ever ask you to take their arm and drag them. In the event that they do ask to be guided, they could potentially say, am i able to please take your elbow? Lets watch the video, that demonstrates how that works.Announcer VO: Passenger who is blind or low imaginative and prescient. Passenger with a carrier animal. A person with carrier animal should at all times be allowed to your car. Safely educated service animals might be quite simply guided into the back seat of the vehicle, and onto the ground of the again seat. If it is raining, or there is inclement climate, it’s worthwhile to have a blanket or beach towel in your trunk. When guiding anybody who’s blind, position your self subsequent to the blind passenger, and permit them to take your arm. Don’t seize the passenger, just allow them to lightly clutch your elbow. Be certain to be very descriptive as you advisor them into your automobile. Familiarizing blind passengers with their environment is welcome support. Tracy: So, discover two predominant takeaways from the video. One used to be about guiding, and one was about service animals. So in phrases of guiding, detect how the female Uber partner supplied her elbow. She didnt drag the person; the man or woman took her elbow. So the 2d takeaway from the video is that service animals are allowed in each auto. Its the legislation. You even chance being eliminated from the Uber platform in case you do deny someones service animal. And the fascinating factor about service animals is that theyre not only for helping a man or woman with a visible impairment, or who’s blind, provider animals can also be for different matters, like anxiousness, or assisting any one in a guide chair. Something the scale of your auto, if it matches a individual, it fits a carrier animal. Carrier animals are informed to sit down on the ground, no concern. So, to stroll you through assistance for our passengers who are Deaf or hard of listening to, weve introduced in my buddy Shafiul, who is also Deaf. Hes going to share what his experiences are, as an Uber driver associate, as good as an Uber rider. Shafiul (Interpreter VO): first of all, I simply want to say thanks a lot for participating in uberASSIST.Youre making the lives of the Deaf group so much better. In my view, when your passenger is tough of listening to, there are three guidelines to furnish them with 5 star carrier. First tip: to find the first-rate option to communicate by using first opening eye contact. 2nd tip: switch to a visible notice taking if imperative, for example, pen and paper, texting. Third tip: Be patient, and procedure them with a smile. Stacy (VO): An foremost tip that I realized working with Shafiul is that he uses touch to seize his attention. For example, a faucet on the shoulder. And one more tip that I discovered, is to speak straight to Shafiul, to talk instantly to the client, and not the interpreter, or not the help individual. And that thats actual for myself as well generally i’ve a person helping me, and that you simply still talk to myself straight, and not my support individual. Now for any person who might have a speech impairment. Be sufferer. Ask yes/No questions, when which you could. Dont interrupt. Most importantly, having one incapacity doesnt presume you’ve a different disability. So, you probably have a speech impairment, it does no longer mean that you’ve got an intellectual impairment. Lets assessment some recommendations about passengers who could have an mental, developmental, or psychological impairment. All three of these is also invisible you would no longer even know. Maintain in mind, its not ever correct to ask what style of incapacity a person has. Its a exclusive query for acquaintances and household only. Our job as uberASSIST companions is still door-to-door provider. And this doesnt just change if a man or woman has an intellectual, or psychological, or developmental incapacity. Its nonetheless the WALL. Watch, Ask, pay attention, gain knowledge of. For Watch, say good day! And keep in mind, person first in notion and language. Ask. Ask, How can i guide you? And for hear, and be taught, keep in mind that persons with an mental or developmental incapacity are still adults. So recognize what their answer is, and gain knowledge of what it is that they state they want. So if they say, Im fine with my seatbelt, thanks, we believe that theyre k. Whether or not or not a rider has dementia, or Down Syndrome, or some other form of mental impairment, if the rider knows their finish destination, thats all thats crucial to us. We are not clinical experts that may examine whether or not a person is in a position to travel on my own or not. Our quality wager is that they understand the place theyre going, were joyful to present them a ride. So, seniors. Seniors might acquire a mobility impairment, or have dementia, it doesn’t matter what, its nonetheless character first in notion, and its still breaking down the barrier utilising the WALL, and most significantly, a bit of persistence and working out goes a ways. Lets work together to make Uber the most secure, most comfortable, most riskless alternative out there for the fastest-developing section of the populace. Simply assume that older passenger being your mom or your dad, or someone to your circle, and treat them as you desire to your family and buddies to be dealt with. .

How technology gets us hooked
The Long Read: From a young age, humans love to press buttons that light up and make a noise. The thrill of positive feedback lies at the heart of addiction to gambling, games, and social media
Not long ago, I stepped into a lift on the 18th floor of a tall building in New York City. A young woman inside the lift was looking down at the top of her toddlers head with embarrassment as he looked at me and grinned. When I turned to push the ground-floor button, I saw that every button had already been pushed. Kids love pushing buttons, but they only push every button when the buttons light up. From a young age, humans are driven to learn, and learning involves getting as much feedback as possible from the immediate environment. The toddler who shared my elevator was grinning because feedback in the form of lights or sounds or any change in the state of the world is pleasurable.
But this quest for feedback doesnt end with childhood. In 2012, an ad agency in Belgium produced an outdoor campaign for a TV channel that quickly went viral. The campaigns producers placed a big red button on a pedestal in a quaint square in a sleepy town in Flanders. A big arrow hung above the button with a simple instruction: Push to add drama. You can see the glint in each persons eye as he or she approaches the button the same glint that came just before the toddler in my elevator raked his tiny hand across the panel of buttons.
Psychologists have long tried to understand how animals respond to different forms of feedback. In 1971, a psychologist named Michael Zeiler sat in his lab across from three hungry white carneaux pigeons. At this stage, the research programme focused on rats and pigeons, but it had lofty aims. Could the behaviour of lower-order animals teach governments how to encourage charity and discourage crime? Could entrepreneurs inspire overworked shift workers to find new meaning in their jobs? Could parents learn how to shape perfect children?
Before Zeiler could change the world, he had to work out the best way to deliver rewards. One option was to reward every desirable behaviour. Another was to reward those same desirable behaviours on an unpredictable schedule, creating some of the mystery that encourages people to buy lottery tickets. The pigeons had been raised in the lab, so they knew the drill. Each one waddled up to a small button and pecked persistently, hoping that the button would release a tray of Purina pigeon pellets. During some trials, Zeiler would programme the button so it delivered food every time the pigeons pecked; during others, he programmed the button so it delivered food only some of the time. Sometimes the pigeons would peck in vain, the button would turn red, and they would receive nothing.
When I first learned about Zeilers work, I expected the consistent schedule to work best. But thats not what happened at all. The results werent even close: the pigeons pecked almost twice as often when the reward wasnt guaranteed. Their brains, it turned out, were releasing far more dopamine when the reward was unexpected than when it was predictable. Zeiler had documented an important fact about positive feedback: that less is often more. His pigeons were drawn to the mystery of mixed feedback just as humans are attracted to the uncertainty of gambling.
Decades after Zeiler published his results, in 2012, a team of Facebook web developers prepared to unleash a similar feedback experiment on hundreds of millions of humans. The site already had 200 million users at the time a number that would triple over the next three years. The experiment took the form of a deceptively simple new feature called a like button.
Its hard to exaggerate how much the like button changed the psychology of Facebook use. What had begun as a passive way to track your friends lives was now deeply interactive, and with exactly the sort of unpredictable feedback that motivated Zeilers pigeons. Users were gambling every time they shared a photo, web link or status update. A post with zero likes wasnt just privately painful, but also a kind of public condemnation: either you didnt have enough online friends, or, worse still, your online friends werent impressed. Like pigeons, were more driven to seek feedback when it isnt guaranteed. Facebook was the first major social networking force to introduce the like button, but others now have similar functions. You can like and repost tweets on Twitter, pictures on Instagram, posts on Google+, columns on LinkedIn, and videos on YouTube.
The act of liking became the subject of etiquette debates. What did it mean to refrain from liking a friends post? If you liked every third post, was that an implicit condemnation of the other posts? Liking became a form of basic social support the online equivalent of laughing at a friends joke in public.
Web developer Rameet Chawla developed an app as a marketing exercise, but also a social experiment, to uncover the effect of the like button. When he launched it, Chawla posted this introduction on its homepage: People are addicted. We experience withdrawals. We are so driven by this drug, getting just one hit elicits truly peculiar reactions. Im talking about likes. Theyve inconspicuously emerged as the first digital drug to dominate our culture.
Chawlas app, called Lovematically, was designed to automatically like every picture that rolled through its users newsfeeds. It wasnt even necessary to impress them any more; any old post was good enough to inspire a like. Apart from enjoying the warm glow that comes from spreading good cheer, Chawla for the first three months, the apps only user also found that people reciprocated. They liked more of his photos, and he attracted an average of 30 new followers a day, a total of almost 3,000 followers during the trial period. On Valentines Day 2014, Chawla allowed 5,000 Instagram users to download a beta version of the app. After only two hours, Instagram shut down Lovematically for violating the social networks terms of use.
I knew way before launching it that it would get shut down by Instagram, Chawla said. Using drug terminology, you know, Instagram is the dealer and Im the new guy in the market giving away the drug for free.
Chawla was surprised, though, that it happened so quickly. Hed hoped for at least a week of use, but Instagram pounced immediately.
When I moved to the United States for postgraduate studies in 2004, online entertainment was limited. These were the days before Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube and Facebook was limited to students at Harvard. One evening, I stumbled on a game called Sign of the Zodiac (Zodiac for short) that demanded very little mental energy.
Zodiac was a simple online slot machine, much like the actual slot machines in casinos: you decided how much to wager, lazily clicked a button over and over again, and watched as the machine spat out wins and losses. At first, I played to relieve the stress of long days filled with too much thinking, but the brief ding that followed each small win, and the longer melody that followed each major win, hooked me fast. Eventually screenshots of the game would intrude on my day. Id picture five pink scorpions lining up for the games highest jackpot, followed by the jackpot melody that I can still conjure today. I had a minor behavioural addiction, and these were the sensory hangovers of the random, unpredictable feedback that followed each win.
My Zodiac addiction wasnt unusual. For 13 years, Natasha Dow Schll, a cultural anthropologist, studied gamblers and the machines that hook them. She collected descriptions of slot machines from gambling experts and current and former addicts, which included the following: Slots are the crack cocaine of gambling electronic morphine … the most virulent strain of gambling in the history of man Slots are the premier addiction delivery device.
These are sensationalised descriptions, but they capture how easily people become hooked on slot-machine gambling. I can relate, because I became addicted to a slots game that wasnt even doling out real money. The reinforcing sound of a win after the silence of several losses was enough for me.
In the US, banks are not allowed to handle online gambling winnings, which makes online gambling practically illegal. Very few companies are willing to fight the system, and the ones that do are quickly defeated. That sounds like a good thing, but free and legal games such as Sign of the Zodiac can also be dangerous. At casinos, the deck is stacked heavily against the player; on average the house has to win. But the house doesnt have to win in a game without money.
As David Goldhill, the chief executive officer of the Game Show Network, which also produces many online games, told me: Because were not restricted by having to pay real winnings, we can pay out $120 for every $100 played. No land-based casino could do that for more than a week without going out of business. As a result, the game can continue forever because the player never runs out of chips. I played Sign of the Zodiac for four years and rarely had to start a new game. I won roughly 95% of the time. The game only ended when I had to eat or sleep or attend class in the morning. And sometimes it didnt even end then.
Casinos win most of the time, but they have a clever way of convincing gamblers that the outcomes are reversed. Early slot machines were incredibly simple devices: the player pulled the machines arm to spin its three mechanical reels. If the centre of the reels displayed two or more of the same symbol when they stopped spinning, the player won a certain number of coins or credits. Today, slot machines allow gamblers to play multiple lines. Every time you play, youre more likely to win on at least one line, and the machine will celebrate with you by flashing bright lights and playing catchy tunes. If you play 15 lines, and you win on two of the lines, you make a net loss, and yet you enjoy the positive feedback that follows a win a type of win that Schll and other gambling experts call a loss disguised as a win.
Losses disguised as wins only matter because players dont classify them as losses they classify them as wins. This is what makes modern slot machines and modern casinos so dangerous. Like the little boy who hit every button in my lift, adults never really grow out of the thrill of attractive lights and sounds. If our brains convince us that were winning even when were actually losing, it becomes almost impossible to muster the self-control to stop playing.

The success of slot machines is measured by time on device. Since most players lose more money the longer they play, time on device is a useful proxy for profitability. Video-game designers use a similar measure, which captures how engaging and enjoyable their games are. The difference between casinos and video games is that many game designers are more concerned with making their games fun than with making buckets of money. Bennett Foddy, who teaches game design at New York Universitys Game Center, has created a number of successful free-to-play games, but each was a labour of love rather than a money-making vehicle.
Video games are governed by microscopic rules, Foddy says. When your mouse cursor moves over a particular box, text will pop up, or a sound will play. Designers use this sort of micro-feedback to keep players more engaged and more hooked in.
A game must obey these microscopic rules, because gamers are likely to stop playing a game that doesnt deliver a steady dose of small rewards that make sense given the games rules. Those rewards can be as subtle as a ding sound or a white flash whenever a character moves over a particular square. Those bits of micro-feedback need to follow the act almost immediately, because if theres a tight pairing in time between when I act and when something happens, then Ill think I was causing it.
The game Candy Crush Saga is a prime example. At its peak in 2013, the game generated more than $600,000 in revenue per day. To date, its developer, King, has earned around $2.5 billion from the game. Somewhere between half a billion and a billion people have downloaded Candy Crush Saga on their smartphones or through Facebook. Most of those players are women, which is unusual for a blockbuster.
Its hard to understand the games colossal success when you see how straightforward it is. Players aim to create lines of three or more of the same candy by swiping candies left, right, up, and down. Candies are crushed they disappear when you form these matching lines, and the candies above them drop down to take their place. The game ends when the screen fills with candies that cannot be matched. Foddy told me that it wasnt the rules that made the game a success it was juice. Juice refers to the games surface feedback. It isnt essential to the game, but its essential to the games success. Without juice, the game loses its charm.
Novice game designers often forget to add juice, Foddy said. If a character in your game runs through the grass, the grass should bend as he runs through it. It tells you that the grass is real and that the character and grass are in the same world. When you form a line in Candy Crush Saga, a reinforcing sound plays, the score associated with that line flashes brightly, and sometimes you hear words of praise intoned by a hidden, deep-voiced narrator.
Juice amplifies feedback, but its also designed to unite the real world and the gaming world. The most powerful vehicle for juice must surely be virtual reality (VR) technology, which is still in its infancy. VR places the user in an immersive environment, which the user navigates as she might the real world. Advanced VR also introduces multisensory feedback, including touch, hearing and smell.
In a podcast last year, the author and sports columnist Bill Simmons spoke to billionaire investor Chris Sacca, an early Google employee and Twitter investor, about his experience with VR. Im afraid for my kids, a little bit, Simmons said. I do wonder if this VR world you dive into is almost superior to the actual world youre in. Instead of having human interactions, I can just go into this VR world and do VR things and thats gonna be my life.
Sacca shared Simmons concerns. One of the things thats interesting about technology is that the improvement in resolution and sound modelling and responsiveness is outpacing our own physiological development, Sacca said. You can watch some early videos where you are on top of a skyscraper, and your body will not let you step forward. Your body is convinced that that is the side of the skyscraper. Thats not even a super immersive VR platform. So we have some crazy days ahead of us.
Until recently, most people thought of VR as a tool for gaming, but that changed when Facebook acquired Oculus VR for $2bn in 2014. Facebooks Mark Zuckerberg had big ideas for the Oculus Rift gaming headset that went far beyond games. This is just the start, Zuckerberg said. After games, were going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court-side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face just by putting goggles in your home. VR no longer dwelled on the fringes. One day, we believe this kind of immersive, augmented reality will become a part of daily life for billions of people, said Zuckerberg.
In October 2015, the New York Times shipped a small cardboard VR viewer with its Sunday paper. Paired with a smartphone, the Google Cardboard viewer streamed VR content, including documentaries on North Korea, Syrian refugees, and a vigil following the Paris terror attacks. Instead of sitting through 45 seconds on the news of someone walking around and explaining how terrible it is, you are actively becoming a participant in the story that you are viewing, said Christian Stephen, a producer of one of the VR documentaries.
Despite the promise of VR, it also poses great risks. Jeremy Bailenson, a professor of communication at Stanfords Virtual Reality Interaction Lab, worries that the Oculus Rift will damage how people interact with the world. Am I terrified of the world where anyone can create really horrible experiences? Yes, it does worry me. I worry what happens when a violent video game feels like murder. And when pornography feels like sex. How does that change the way humans interact, function as a society?
When it matures, VR will allow us to spend time with anyone in any location doing whatever we like for as long as we like. That sort of boundless pleasure sounds wonderful, but it has the capacity to devalue face-to-face interactions. Why live in the real world with real, flawed people when you can live in a perfect world that feels just as real? Wielded by game designers, it might prove to be a vehicle for the latest in a series of escalating behavioural addictions.
Some experiences are designed to be addictive for the sake of ensnaring hapless consumers, but others happen to be addictive though they are primarily designed to be fun or engaging. The line that separates these is very thin; to a large extent the difference rests on the intention of the designer.
When Nintendos superstar game designer Shigeru Miyamoto created Super Mario Bros, his primary aim was to make a game that he himself enjoyed playing. Thats the point, he said, not to make something sell, something very popular, but to love something, and make something that we creators can love. Its the very core feeling we should have in making games.
When you compare Super Mario Bros regularly voted by game designers as one of the greatest games ever to others on the market, it is easy to recognise the difference in intention.
Adam Saltsman, who produced an acclaimed indie game called Canabalt in 2009, has written extensively about the ethics of game design. Many of the predatory games of the past five years use whats known as an energy system, Saltsman said. Youre allowed to play the game for five minutes, and then you artificially run out of stuff to do. The game will send you an email in, say, four hours when you can start playing again. I told Saltsman that the system sounded pretty good to me it forces gamers to take breaks and encourages kids to do their homework between gaming sessions. But thats where the predatory part comes in.
Super Mario Run was primarily designed by its creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, to be a game he enjoyed playing Photograph: PR
According to Saltsman: Game designers began to realise that players would pay $1 to shorten the wait time, or to increase the amount of energy their avatar would have once the four-hour rest period had passed. I came across this predatory device when playing a game called Trivia Crack. If you give the wrong answer several times, you run out of lives, and a dialogue screen gives you a choice: wait for an hour for more lives, or pay 99 cents to continue immediately. Many games hide these down-the-line charges. Theyre free, at first, but later you are forced to pay in-game fees to continue.
If you are minutes or even hours deep into the game, the last thing you want to do is admit defeat. You have so much to lose, and your aversion to that sense of loss compels you to feed the machine just one more time, over and over again. You start playing because you want to have fun, but you continue playing because you want to avoid feeling unhappy.
A game in which you always win is boring. It sounds appealing but it gets old fast. To some extent we all need losses and difficulties and challenges, because without them the thrill of success weakens gradually with each new victory. The hardship of the challenge is far more compelling than knowing you are going to succeed. This sense of hardship is an ingredient in many addictive experiences, including one of the most addictive games of all time: Tetris.
In 1984, Alexey Pajitnov was working at a computer lab at the Russian Academy of Science in Moscow. Many of the labs scientists worked on side projects, and Pajitnov began working on a video game. Pajitnov worked on Tetris for much longer than he planned because he couldnt stop playing the game. Eventually Pajitnov allowed his friends at the Academy of Science to play the game. Everyone who touched the game couldnt stop playing either.
His best friend, Vladimir Pokhilko, a former psychologist, remembered taking the game to his lab at the Moscow Medical Institute. Everybody stopped working. So I deleted it from every computer. Everyone went back to work, until a new version appeared in the lab.

Tetris spread from the Academy of Science to the rest of Moscow, and then on to the rest of Russia and eastern Europe. Two years later, in 1986, the game reached the west, but its big break came in 1991, when Nintendo signed a deal with Pajitnov. Every Game Boy would come with a free game cartridge that contained a redesigned version of Tetris.
That year I saved up and ultimately bought a Game Boy, which is how I came to play Tetris for the first time. It wasnt as glitzy as some of my other favourites, but I played for hours at a time. Nintendo was smart to include the game with their new portable console, because it was easy to learn and very difficult to abandon. I assumed that I would grow tired of Tetris, but sometimes I still play the game today, more than 25 years later. It has longevity because it grows with you. Its easy at first, but as your skills improve, the game gets more difficult. The pieces fall from the top of the screen more quickly, and you have less time to react than you did when you were a novice.
This escalation of difficulty is a critical hook that keeps the game engaging long after you have mastered its basic moves. Twenty-five years ago, a psychiatrist named Richard Haier showed that this progression is pleasurable because your brain becomes more efficient as you improve. Haier decided to watch as people mastered a video game, though he knew little about the cutting-edge world of gaming. In 1991 no one had heard of Tetris, he said in an interview a few years later. I went to the computer store to see what they had and the guy said, Here try this. Its just come in. Tetris was the perfect game, it was simple to learn, you had to practise to get good, and there was a good learning curve.
Haier bought some copies of Tetris for his lab and watched as his experimental subjects played the game. He did find neurological changes with experience parts of the brain thickened and brain activity declined, suggesting experts brains worked more efficiently but more relevant here, he found that his subjects relished playing the game. They signed up to play for 45 minutes a day, five days a week, for up to eight weeks. They came for the experiment (and the cash payment that came with participating), but stayed for the game.
One satisfying feature of the game is the sense that you are building something your efforts produce a pleasing tower of coloured bricks. You have the chaos coming as random pieces, and your job is to put them in order. The game allows you the brief thrill of seeing your completed lines flash before they disappear, leaving only your mistakes. So you begin again, and try to complete another line as the game speeds up and your fingers are forced to dance across the controls more quickly.
Mikhail Kulagin, Pajitnovs friend and a fellow programmer, remembers feeling a drive to fix his mistakes. Tetris is a game with a very strong negative motivation. You never see what you have done very well, and your mistakes are seen on the screen. You always want to correct them.
The sense of creating something that requires labour and effort and expertise is a major force behind addictive acts that might otherwise lose their sheen over time. It also highlights an insidious difference between substance addiction and behavioural addiction: where substance addictions are nakedly destructive, many behavioural addictions are quietly destructive acts wrapped in cloaks of creation. The illusion of progress will sustain you as you achieve high scores or acquire more followers or improve your skills, and so, if you want to stop, youll struggle ever harder against the drive to grow.
Some designers are very much against infinite format games, like Tetris, said Foddy, because theyre an abuse of a weakness in peoples motivational structures they wont be able to stop.
Humans find the sweet spot sandwiched between too easy and too difficult irresistible. Its the land of just-challenging-enough computer games, financial targets, work ambitions, social media objectives and fitness goals. It is in this sweet spot where the need to stop crumbles before obsessive goal-setting that addictive experiences live.

uberASSIST Online Education Course: Assisting with Passengers with Specific Disabilities (3/4)
Tumblr media
Tracy Schmitt: so far, weve pointed out uberASSIST and its advantages. Weve also talked about the way to keep up a correspondence with individuals with disabilities use person first and weve additionally damaged down some obstacles when aiding humans with disabilities, simply by way of staring at, Asking, Listening, and finding out. Next up, we share a couple of tips when working with seniors, or passengers with disabilities. These are going to be additionally to the instruments youve bought already: individual first language, and WALL. Individuals with mobility impairments are like myself. They will have predicament with their palms, they may have mobility concerns with their legs, they may even use a manual folding wheelchair. Or they might use crutches, or they would be any individual thats pregnant even. Up next is a couple of suggestions to support especially with men and women with mobility impairments. So for Watch, its giving the consumer time to make their possess approach. Might be they want just a little more patience. For Ask, its real for every person to no longer contact without permission, its in particular principal for folks with a mobility impairment to no longer contact without permission, more commonly since it might knock them off their steadiness. And for hear, bear in mind, its k if the person says, No, thank you, to not help. And for study, learn what theyve requested. Be trained what theyve mentioned, be taught what they want. If the customer indicated, Please go away the brakes on, then thats the quality factor to do. And which you could be taught for subsequent time, probably my shoppers going to wish go away the brakes on. You recognize, many guide wheelchairs have the option of casting off the wheels. Wheelchairs can fold, and so they arent as heavy as you think. Simply ask a patron, How can i guide you? And they will describe to you how one can fold their wheelchair, or how dismantling their personal chair is pleasant. I consistently say, if you happen to dont comprehend, Ask. Now here’s a video on how you can accommodate a passenger who uses a wheelchair. Simply to improve, riders are to not anticipate you to elevate and a switch them in or out of your car. People that use guide wheelchairs on a day-to-day groundwork will be equipped to lift and switch themselves into your automobile and not using a situation. So lets watch the video. Enjoy. Announcer VO: Passenger with a handbook wheelchair. There are two types of wheelchairs: energy, and guide wheelchairs. Vigor wheelchairs require autos that have a raise or a ramp. Manual wheelchairs come in two varieties folding, and non-folding. Folding wheelchairs are collapsible, by way of disposing of the seat cushion and pulling up the seat, by way of moving a release bar, or pulling a cord. This variety of wheelchair may also be stowed conveniently in a car trunk, or at the back of a seat. Ask the passenger for their recommendation involving the great method to fold the chair. Non-folding wheelchairs can be with ease disassembled for stowage. The colossal rear wheels have a button in the centre of the wheel for removing. Push the button in, keep, and pull the wheel straight out. To exchange the wheel, keep the button depressed except the wheel is in position. Then unlock, and give the wheel a tug, to make sure it’s securely fixed. Invariably carry these chairs by means of the body, on no account with the aid of the wheels, armrests, or footrest.Ask the passenger easy methods to set the brakes. Tracy: next up, we talk about persons with visual impairments, or individuals who’re blind, or even folks who are partly sighted. For the Watch, its extra essential to introduce yourself. As a man or woman who is partially sighted, theyre extra prone to accept the aid of their Uber driver than they are from a stranger on the street. For Ask, everybodys designated and different. If you wish to comprehend the best way to aid someone, its pleasant to assert, How can i support you? Or, How can i guide you? Which leads us to hear and study, style of in a combined method. All people is unique. Some people could say, i will consultant myself, thank you. Some folks could say, Please take my back. Am i able to take your shoulder? No person will ever ask you to take their arm and drag them. If they do ask to be guided, they could potentially say, can i please take your elbow? Lets watch the video, that demonstrates how that works. Announcer VO: Passenger who is blind or low imaginative and prescient. Passenger with a service animal. A person with service animal should invariably be allowed for your auto. Correctly educated carrier animals will likely be readily guided into the back seat of the automobile, and onto the ground of the back seat. If it is raining, or there’s inclement weather, it’s useful to have a blanket or beach towel for your trunk. When guiding any one who’s blind, situation yourself next to the blind passenger, and enable them to take your arm. Do not snatch the passenger, just enable them to frivolously grasp your elbow. Be sure to be very descriptive as you guide them into your vehicle. Familiarizing blind passengers with their surroundings is welcome aid. Tracy: So, observe two major takeaways from the video. One was about guiding, and one was about provider animals. So in terms of guiding, realize how the female Uber accomplice provided her elbow. She didnt drag the person; the character took her elbow. So the 2d takeaway from the video is that service animals are allowed in each car.Its the legislation. You even risk being removed from the Uber platform in the event you do deny someones service animal. And the interesting factor about carrier animals is that theyre not only for supporting a individual with a visual impairment, or who’s blind, carrier animals will also be for different matters, like nervousness, or helping any one in a manual chair. Some thing the dimensions of your vehicle, if it fits a man or woman, it matches a service animal. Carrier animals are trained to sit on the ground, no difficulty. So, to stroll you through assistance for our passengers who are Deaf or tough of listening to, weve brought in my buddy Shafiul, who is also Deaf. Hes going to share what his experiences are, as an Uber driver accomplice, as well as an Uber rider. Shafiul (Interpreter VO): firstly, I simply want to say thanks so much for collaborating in uberASSIST. Youre making the lives of the Deaf group so a lot better. In my view, when your passenger is rough of listening to, there are three tips to furnish them with 5 megastar provider.First tip: find the satisfactory solution to keep up a correspondence with the aid of first commencing eye contact. 2nd tip: switch to a visible word taking if necessary, for instance, pen and paper, texting. 0.33 tip: Be patient, and procedure them with a smile. Stacy (VO): An principal tip that I learned working with Shafiul is that he uses touch to catch his concentration. For illustration, a faucet on the shoulder. And one other tip that I realized, is to speak straight to Shafiul, to speak immediately to the purchaser, and not the interpreter, or no longer the help character. And that thats real for myself as well sometimes i’ve somebody aiding me, and that you simply nonetheless speak to myself instantly, and now not my aid person. Now for any person who would have a speech impairment. Be patient. Ask sure/No questions, when that you may. Dont interrupt. Most importantly, having one incapacity doesnt presume you may have another incapacity. So, you probably have a speech impairment, it does no longer imply that you have an intellectual impairment. Lets evaluation some recommendations about passengers who will have an mental, developmental, or psychological impairment. All three of those may be invisible you could now not even be aware of. Maintain in intellect, its not ever right to ask what type of incapacity anyone has. Its a confidential query for pals and household handiest. Our job as uberASSIST partners is still door-to-door service. And this doesnt simply alternate if a individual has an intellectual, or psychological, or developmental incapacity. Its nonetheless the WALL. Watch, Ask, pay attention, gain knowledge of. For Watch, say hiya! And hold in mind, individual first in perception and language. Ask. Ask, How am i able to help you? And for listen, and learn, bear in mind that people with an mental or developmental disability are nonetheless adults. So admire what their answer is, and study what it is that they state they want. So if they are saying, Im pleasant with my seatbelt, thanks, we trust that theyre k. Whether or not or not a rider has dementia, or Down Syndrome, or another type of intellectual impairment, if the rider is aware of their end destination, thats all thats imperative to us. We are not scientific gurus that can check whether or not a person is in a position to travel on my own or no longer. Our quality wager is that they be aware of where theyre going, have been completely happy to present them a experience. So, seniors. Seniors would collect a mobility impairment, or have dementia, no matter what, its still individual first in perception, and its nonetheless breaking down the barrier utilizing the WALL, and most importantly, a little of persistence and understanding goes a ways. Lets work collectively to make Uber the most secure, most comfy, most trustworthy alternative out there for the quickest-developing segment of the population. Simply think that older passenger being your mom or your dad, or any one to your circle, and treat them as you desire to your household and pals to be handled. .
