Read down below for my thoughts on people pulling this shit

Before I start, maybe pick up a book from school and practice how to read a narrative and learn content analysis,

it’ll really help because I don’t know what the hell else to say to people who are bad at reading subtext and putting context into practice at this point

I see the sentiment of “Kabru is actually evil because he actively murders people-“ as if the story isn’t actually like super nuanced and complex in its’ dynamics between races

and y’all can only really see a man that has personally gone through nothing but tragedy have a proper reaction to not having that tragedy handled properly and go “because he is a brown man he is inherently violent and therefore bad for my white man because of these story beats” with the type of stupid white person reaction.

The subtext went out the window huh, he gave the viewer ample context and reason as to why it happened he was going to kill the body retriever group, WHO WAS TRYING TO SAY TO HIM THAT THEY WERE GOING TO MUG HIM. AND KILL HIM AND SPLIT THE MONEY THEY MADE FROM GAMING A SYSTEM THEYVE BEEN EXPLOITING, WHICH HE DIDN’T DO.

Dying to monsters is one thing but someone like a retriever artificially upping the amount of people who die in a dungeon while also actively disrespecting the rules that the dungeon has by doing that fits perfectly into Kabru’s moral compass and motivation. Do you think that wouldn’t bother him? Sure, he has learning to do himself in regards to monsters and all, but do people really think he’s a monster actively incapable of change, when he’s stated in text that he believes himself to be a monster due to the things that have happened to him? Do you think he doesn’t blame himself and have survivors guilt from what he went through? Or do we think because Kabru lies and he warps and he cheats only to start realizing that the Kabru we’re shown doesn’t even know where he himself starts or ends. This is not trying to justify his actions. I am explaining his thinking. Of course He’d kill the retrievers.

And I think he would kill the Canaries if he had the chance to. I think the Retrievers were an active stand in for his feelings towards the Canaries.

When you build a life speaking lies after your previous status quo crumbles, how the fuck are you supposed to differentiate your own behaviors from the lies you grow into saying to make sure you don’t get close enough to people to be hurt as badly as he was as a kid. He is a sole survivor of a tragedy, and he reacts accordingly, and you all just want to antagonize him.

Did we forget who we’re talking about in comparison here, or are you guys that focused on justifying a man who clearly was used, exploited, and literally lost his mother because some group who thought themselves to be higher than due to their longer life cycles decided to destroy his whole life because it created a slight inconvenience

god you lot are truly fucking insufferable and can’t let characters be complex without woobifying or flanderizing them to be more digestible.

Let characters be complex.

You don’t have to like them all the time, You don’t have to agree with their actions.

You don’t have to agree with a character all the time for you to like a character’s writing.

Throwing a new scenario at you have you ever thought about what if ford kind of took advantage of stans spotty memory to start a deeper relationship with him? Just implying this is something theyve been doing already and stans simply forgotten and stan (not that ford is aware of this) hesitantly believes it because he has memories of looking at ford in a way he shouldn't. /thinking/ about ford in a way he shouldn't so maybe he just hasnt recovered those memories of acting on those thoughts yet

But as time goes by he'll ask ford for like. More details to try and jog his memory and ford gives him vague, general things (because well. Never actually happened) and stan is getting more suspicious and freaked out

He starts questioning his reality and if ford is just going along with this because it's what /stan/ wanted and ford felt guilty for the mind wipe so he went along with it so he starts pulling away and ford is getting a little panicked because he thinks stan has figured out his lie and is about to leave him (guess what ford? Gaslighting your brother actually can backfire crazy right?)

Hell maybe ford got the idea because sometimes stan in his relapses DID get confused about their relationship and commented on fords attractiveness or something so ford was like. Well. What's the harm? It's better to not stress stan out in the relapse and make him panicked about finding his brother attractive. Clearly it would be easier for him to just act like this was pre-established!

oh absolutely! i also swear i saw someone else talking about a similar situation the other day that i just loved (and i wish i could remember WHERE i saw it so i could link it). like the darker spin of "ford convinces stan they were closer than they were" on purpose is definitely interesting. but i really love the idea of it being a little bit of ford leaning in and a lot of stan not having a great grasp on what he was repressing. so you've got ford blurring the lines on purpose but then you've got stan blurring the lines because he's always wanted to so okay yeah that tracks, he just wishes he could remember how they got there, who made the first move, how long they've been open with each other about this.

i also really love the idea of stan thinking that ford might just be putting up with him, because it's almost always the other way around when i've seen it. stan agreeing to (or maybe not necessarily agreeing to but not fighting as hard as he should against) letting their relationship go further than he's comfortable with because it's ford. and if that's how he can keep ford in his life, he'll make it work. but i haven't seen a lot of the reverse, of stan feeling like he's the one that's pushing them over the line and ford may only be going through with it to keep him happy or out of some sort of obligation after weirdmaggedon.

so here you have two fucking idiots, basically, who both just refuse to outright admit their feelings for each other. and yeah, ford has a heavier responsibility here being the one with all his facilities in better working order, sure, but god forbid they just sit down and talk about it when stan is lucid enough. i actually just recently was introduced to this fic, which you have probably seen already but if not, HIGHLY reccommend! because i really do love the idea that when stan has his memory lapses he just. immediately starts hitting on ford. like every time that trope comes up it thrills me.

but okay lol, this is a sharp left and not at all in line with the complicated, angstier edge of things we've been talking about, but lean with me for a second, 🐶. let's assume they've sorted their shit out, they're both up to speed with their mutual affection, and this kinda lapse happens frequently enough that they need a contingency plan of some sort. but when he does lapse, stan has a wildly high rate of immediately clocking ford as "hot as hell" and someone he wants to horizontal tango with.

well what if stan just...gave ford permission to go along with it if he wanted to? it's like an absolutely buckwild sort of pseudo-one-sided roleplay, but they can debrief when stan's back to rights, and it's a nicer way of navigating the situation. stan sure as hell prefers coming back to himself with Ford boneless in bed beside him rather than wringing his hands and looking like the guiltiest man that's ever lived. like there's obviously a fantastic opportunity for angst and drama and emotional fallout with stan's memory ish, but i also think they deserve to make the best of the situation once in a while. as a treat!

Who are your fave and least fave fkmtverse characters?

the first that came to mind was hyoudou senior i just dont enjoy seeing him on screen very much and i think hes boring & annoying as a character. hes fine in middle management blues tonegawa cause then its a comedy manga & we poke fun at him but like as an Antagonist in Best Gambling Manga Ever Made Kaiji Part One its like. i just dont want him ever having the spotlight for more than than a single plotbeat at a time. im less scared thinking about "what if the ending of kaiji ruins all of my analysis so far?" than when i read people talk about hyoudou being the final antag of part 7. this is my 1 singular fear but this being said, im fine with hyoudou existing. hes not that bad. the one in zero was worse and by "the one in zero" i do mean theres at least 3 (?) of them and theyve merged into 1 singular existence in my memory. im sick of them. can we stop? it makes me appreciate how fucking awesome washizu is when i see fkmt utterly fail at writing any other good character w this archetype. what did he put in washizu that made him awesome? mahjong?

i typed too much about hyoudou but i still wanna mention some absolute FLOPS of fkmt characters like the protagonist from RUDE 39 (the pachinko manga fkmt did) katagiri yuuji... whys he named the exact same thing as the protag of t*m*dachi game? RED FLAG. i actively rooted for his ruin the entire time i read that one. i dislike him greatly. can we kill him? in a similar vibe i just cannot like nikaido of hell golf fame. initially i wanted him put in a death game cause thats just what i like reading about but it progressively grew into a need to see him suffer horribly on screen. i need him tortured and NOT mentally the psychological torture of being a loser is NOT enough for him i need him in REAL ACTUAL HELL. im still keeping w the nikaido chapters tho

my blogging may sound like i hate miyoshi greatly also but thats all in jest & good fun hes a good antagonist and a good punching bag. its very fun and enjoyable to go "miyoshi sucks miyoshi should die me and my friends wouldve killed miyoshi with hammers" which makes him a GOOD character i enjoy. hes awesome. hes my singular favorite example of hte trope of "the protags friend betrays them in the death game" its so masterfully pulled. miyoshis awesome. & i love how they wrote him in life in tokyo ichijou LOL hes also very important for kaijis depth of character- heres a guy he saved who then backstabs him. does he still believe in trust? is he still incapable of (direct) violence? and paves the way for part 4+5. miyoshis awesome. hes not top 3 favorites tho. hes just an honorable mention i guess

as mentionned i love washizu also hes my grandpa and i love him. also i love akagi hes my one singular favorite fkmt character its not even close no elaboration needed. i enjoy & love & think about all the akagi characters, banger after banger, urabe u are so funny, and so on. one year ill remember to celebrate yukio day properly. lets move on

SAHARA i love sahara an abnormal amount ive just made up so much shit about him that is real to me n then i read part 1 again n i dont notice that theres very little supporting my vision. but im RIGHT. he begged to be in the death game. he BEGGED to be in the DEATH GAME over being a WORKER. this dude rocks. i know in my heart that he loves gorey movies and he laughs when the characters die & his favorite movie is funny games but he disagrees w everyones analysis of it he just thinks its a fun movie? its a fun time? i also love endou & have similarly made shit up about him to meeeee he got broken up w between part 1 and 2 and htis explains literally everything about him. the way he yells at kaiji in the bathroom is just him projecting his frustration & anger he had with his ex. its NOT about kaiji. it simply makes sense.

uhm this is already too long but i didnt even get to ten. i love ten dearly. i also enjoy mamiya greatly as a character shes funny & a very interesting protagonist for a psychological, hot mahjong action work. her kinda character would be more usually seen in comedy slice of lifey mahjong (like penchan!) so its interesting. its fun. its new

in conclusion i like the characters that are good and dislike the ones who are suck

5. Killing Bullseye that one time

so, technically this didnt ACTUALLY happen (or itd be my number one lmfao), it was in a dream Matt was having while he was dying. but listen, okay, mike was still so real for this. bullseye was this close to killing Matt and Mike comes outta nowhere, declares his love for Karen Page, and boom shoots the guy right off a fuckin skyscraper how could i NOT talk about this, okay?

4. Being thrown to the ground

listen, he looks good a little roughed up, alright? what are you, a fuckin cop or somethin? aint it my right as a living, breathing, human being to enjoy pretty boys being thrown around a lil sometimes? damn

for reference: the first photo was when he was pretending to be Matt, trying to deal with some mob bosses. one of them got angry and pushed him down. the second was when mike was first introduced in the soule/noto run. bad guys bust into the bar hes at and matt throws him behind cover lmfao

3. this EXCELLENT reintroduction in the 2020 annual

the 2020 annual is when we get mike's whole backstory and THIS is the first panel we see him in. this is genuinely poetic. mike murdock wouldnt exist without first being made-up by matt (and matt pretending to be mike). we all know the story of matt losing his eye sight, he pushed a person out of the way of a van that was carrying toxic chemicals, blah blah

well. here we are yet again. except everythings flipped on its head. mike is pretending to be matt. he's jumping in front of this van to make the guys think theyve hit him so he can help rob them. he isnt saving anyone but he sure as hell is putting himself in danger. it sets the tone for his whole character. its just. yeah. this was fantastic, honestly.

2. his reaction to butch assualting hammerhead

okay so this was the moment in vol 6 that genuinely caught my complete attention. this was the moment i realized just how different and special mike was.

murdocks are known for, well, violence. jack was a boxer, he wanted matt to grow up and be nothing like him. he didnt want matt to fight only for matt to become daredevil later in life. we are led to believe there's almost this inherent violent streak to being "a murdock"

this is after a mob boss meeting, mike is watching hammerhead (a boss) from the shadows, helping butch keep track of him. he lets butch know where hammerhead is. butch proceeds to threaten hammerhead, bash his head into a car, yell at him, then gouge one of his eyes out.

and, well. this was mike's reaction.

this is the first time we are given a glimpse of mike's morals, his values. besides how much he cares for the people close to him, we find out he has an aversion to violence. he's a career criminal, i'm not saying he doesnt know how to throw a punch, but he goes out of his way to avoid it.

he's repeatedly shown to be a voice of reason, a mediator, and every time a violent solution is brought up, he immediately protests and wants to figure out a different way. that's fascinating to me.

he's breaking the mold of being "a murdock" in the most unexpected way. we think he must be so much like jack to so easily get involved in crime (with even jack saying so himself), but here we are shown that's wrong.

i wish we could've gotten his and butch's convo directly after this. also, another thing, mike's reaction to people he cares about doing something he doesnt approve of isn't to get angry, it's to worry. which, again. fascinating. admirable, even.

when he finds out matt's "in rehab" he's worried, and yeah a little angry, but mostly concerned for his brother. even after this incident, we are seen mike being very worried later. he's concerned for butch's mental state and wants to stop him from making any rash decisions (ie killing someone)

but, yeah. sorry for the damn essay (and heres another) anyways

trying to save wilson fisk from being assassinated

christs sake hes so fucking gorgeous. also ignore matt being an asshole here because that's all he ever did when mike was around.

this was another very interesting moment in which we see mike's strong morals on full display. we are repeatedly told mike isn't the kind of person to be trusted, he doesnt take things seriously, he's morally ambiguous yada yada. and yet.

as soon as he finds out butch is planning to maybe (which he later find out he's correct about) put a hit on wilson fisk, wilson fuckin fisk, he wants to stop it. mike is under the impression that killing someone is not a line you can cross and come back from. he's deeply concerned about the path his friend is headed down.

In this scene, he's coming to visit foggy in the hospital to talk to him about maybe getting butch out of jail while also hoping to catch daredevil there. he does, obviously.

his full intention is to team up with daredevil to try and take fisk down. mike thinks if he can take fisk down it'll stop butch from trying to kill him.

him going to daredevil also shows his ability to extend his compassion to others. he has no fuckin reason to trust daredevil. daredevil has done nothing but insult mike, yell and argue with him, and even rough him up a couple of times. and still, mike decides to reach out because he knows daredevil is supposed to be a good guy. he also knows daredevil is supposed to be matt's close friend.

he brings it up more than once that the reason he trusts daredevil is because of matt being his friend (despite mike and matt supposedly not being close).

so, yeah, i got a little off-topic, but that's why i love this scene so much. it shows not only how deeply mike cares for people, but also his compassion and aversion to violence. he's trying to take care of his best friend and trust daredevil despite their differences. he's showing how good of a person he is and how dedicated he is to his cause of a "bloodless" coup.

so in my au shawn tells jules he isnt psychic a Lot sooner so what happens in deez nups (thanks episode titles) goes Very differently ! mainly in that there isnt rlly,, a fight ?

like ok. the entire time shawn is a Bachelor hes at a Bachelors Party and hes a Guy and hes wearing a suit that feels like its choking him and his dad is having a talk with him about being a Spencer Man and not continuing the cycle. the entire day shawns been having this,,, feeling that Wont go away and all of this only serves to make him feel worse.

so he chugs the prosecco and comes back to jules, and just sits there kinda miserable while she talks. she notices theres smth not right w him and tries her best to pry it out of him, but he just. cant. she goes on abt how if he rlly doesnt wanna tell her he doesnt have to, but that she Does love him and he can always come to her for anything. things have been changing a lot recently, what with marlowe and lassie and rachael and gus, but she assures him that they all still love him, and that hell always be their boyfriend-

shawn breaks at that and as jules tries to figure out what she said that went wrong, shawn tells her that gus will want to dance w her, and he leaves the party early.

then in right turn or left for dead shawn kinda,, avoids jules.

(shawn knows by this point that shes trans. theyve known video for years and while vids made a couple jokes abt shawn being nonbinary (mostly spurred on by shawn saying out of pocket things abt gender) they never like,, made her feel like she had to be anything. shawn appreciates it but now she wishes shed asked for help because oh god,,, she wants to get to know herself better and actually feel comfortable in her own skin but she is Terrified that jules and lassie and gus are going to leave her. shes known gus her whole life and the change might be the straw that broke the camels back, lassie is. well. lassie, and jules... shawn wants to Marry jules, as much as That thought scares her. shes sure shes the one and the idea of her leaving Hurts.)

so shawns out here concussed, dysphoric as all hell, covered in blood, and preemptively heartbroken. havin a time!

they dream of a scenario where the night had gone differently, where theyd told jules and shed been incredibly supportive. the girl is dead, sure, but hey, shawn can be nonbinary!

jules, on the other hand, is trying to talk to shawn but they keep avoiding her and she doesnt know why. she thinks they might want to break up with her, which hurts like hell, but if thats what they want, who is she to stop them? if only theyd Tell her.

so after the case is solved and jules saves shawn, she all but Drags them home to actually talk.

jules just straight up tells them: shawn, if you want to break up with me, do it. its okay.

and shawn just,,, breaks down Sobbing. they tell her Everything, how scared they are of losing her and how Awful theyve been feeling and aaagh. they say that they go aaagh

but jules scoops them up in her arms and assures them she wont leave them,, she loves them sososo much gender and all :'] <3

aaaurgh they make me happy. i hate how seasons 7 did them (NOT THAT I HATED THE BREAKUP IT WAS SOOOO GOOD BUT LIKE. i hated how shawn acted afterward,, season 6 and onward has Not been it for characterizations at all i fucking hate it)

ok gush sesh over more lore: idk how the rest of the episodes breakup era would go considering theyre together in my au but erm,, w jules and videos help (she comes out to vid next whos like "i knew,, but im proud of you ily") shawn comes out to everyone else and tries out new pronouns and expressions and a teehee :]] theyre all so happy and trans and gay and its great

some details about one of my one piece ocs, Z here i should like draw proper ref of Z soon bc i think abt the little guy often. if i do talk about him more and draw him, i may just reveal his real name eventually

anyway theres really nothing happy about this boy from what i shared and i still have nothing happy. however the reason he even still holds onto life is because of books. he loves reading about adventures, whether the tales are from real journalists or something made up. it inspires Z to continue living on despite being chained down in hell

thats not what i actually wanna talk about, i just wanna talk abt something more lighthearted. while Z does appreciate all the strawhats, the ones hes most particularly fond of are luffy, nami, and robin

not that any of them told their stories, but that those four can really sympathize with Z. nami especially can relate with how Z believes he needs to shoulder everything himself to save his island considering hes only 13 enduring all this pain and suffering-- how he even refused to ask for the strawhats help until things were extremely desperate and that he had to accept that he really was powerless to do anything.

doesnt help that Z's "foster family" fed the strawhats too and how charismatic they are- Z thought that they were completely entranced by them so they wouldnt believe a word a bratty kid would say. and when Z felt completely helpless, he had pinned the blame on the strawhats and wished they never met bc things did go downhill for Z since his arrival

with robin, Z would talk about his favorite book and robin adores how he'd light up talking about it. not to mention him getting really excited when robin said she read the book before and gave him recommendations. (and as a parting gift, she gave Z a book she already finished reading. and it's about a kid his age starting their own adventure and writing everything about their exploits as they travel the world)

and with luffy, i'll admit was p hard to think about as hes not an easy character to write... but hes always been good w kids (AAAAUUUGJWHDIWHDK) and how theyve been inspired by him. what makes it harder to think about is how this kid has ace's face and acted similar to a younger ace. luffy felt a bit uneasy and Z just didnt like him at all. though theyre attracted to each other like magnets so kinda impossible to be separated without being pulled apart. when the strawhats went off to do their own things, luffy and Z somehow come across each other and it's like "stop following me!" / "you're the one following me!"

neither share what adventures they had and neither cared enough to ask. though Z was a little curious about who ace was and luffy bluntly says that theres nothing to know now bc hes dead. Z was about to pry bc ace had to be important to luffy but then again why should he care about this guy? he didnt care much about luffy and he was gonna leave soon anyway so they just left it at that. and as luffy gets distracted by a beetle on a tree trunk, Z suddenly disappears.

at some point though, luffy knew there was something wrong if Z couldnt just leave the place and people he claims to hate. and Z was startled by luffy's sudden interest in him and the island. he wasnt even sure if he could trust this pirate (esp when the 'rulers' were previously pirates !!) but he didnt feel ill intentions from luffy either so Z does tell him about the strict laws of the land which pisses him off gravely bc basically all of the people's freedoms are revoked and have to live a certain way if they wish to even live 👍👍

Z: "dunno why you're interested. you're gonna leave and forget about this hell of an island anyway. theres nothing you can do."

and again, Z cant trust others- especially not pirates. but the more time spent with the strawhats, the more respect and trust he gave. but he never once believed that they cared for him the same

hey, been a while, hasn't it? i hope you're all doing well! this is my official coming-back-to-tumblr post, but it's a little different than i had originally planned.

i've decided it would be in my best interests to move blogs after a bit of thinking. i feel like coming back here would just feel too awkward for both me and you guys, especially with my now deleted drama post. i just wanna move on from all this bullshit, especially since i've had do deal with a lot of other shit, including college.

it's still @/evrydaygets-darkr, just moved to a different account. i still like the name, so i'm keeping it for now. this account will still be up for archival purposes, but it will never be active again. i hope you understand. as a general life update, i'm done with my first semester of college!! it's been kinda fun so far! i've made a couple friends here and there, and classes (except for math) were super cool!!! i loved most of my professors, and i am honestly excited for the upcoming semester! ive been artblocked to hell and back though, so i don't have much in terms of new art or writing, but i've been trying my best to get out of it. i also gained a new hyperfixation, which is project sekai: colorful stage (abbreviated as pjsk), so i'll probably be posting abt that quite a bit (btw my fav group is wxs and my fav character is tsukasa :3 ), specifically abt stats and achievements w like song completions, maybe some pulls too!

im also gonna put a few updates on aus and oc stories rq:

for my tmc aus: the big ones i'm working on are getting new masterposts and infodumps for the new blog. i would rb posts from this blog to the new one, but due to some personal stuff i don't feel very comfortable doing that. i havent been able to cook much lore-wise for any of them, but i'll probably get back into the swing of things once i start interacting w you guys again. - for specifically father's duty: i'll hopefully have chapter 3 done soon. it's actually been almost done for a while now, i just need to think of the ending. thank you to those who've stuck with me this far <3 (EDIT: all my tmc aus are discontinued. read above for more info)

4. a story idea you haven't written yet

i have this bisexual!reader x kuroo fic in mind where reader is bokuto's childhood bff so theyve been meeting each other on/off since high school. reader however has since first year been in a relationship with a girl, so kuroos convinced that he'll never have a chance but pines for years and years and years (since reader is genderneutral itll be a bisexual reader, but kuroo thinks theyre [insert gender that the reader seems themselves as and then term for only attracted to women]). he never tells anyone this misconception (only cries about them 'being in a relationship anyway') so bokuto never corrects him.

fast forward to theyre 24-ish? and kuroo and bokuto both live with kenma to save money (it was an arrangement started when they were younger bcos why the hell is he so rich? how does he own a house?) and pay cheap rent to safe up for their own places (also ignore that msby's in osaka and kenma/kuroo is Not. this is my dream house JSJSJS) and then kuroos home alone for the week bcos kenmas out on business and bokutos on family vacation with akaashis family. kuroos been talking about this free week non stop where he'll be cooking himself delicious dinners and 'treat himself all the time'

reader and their girlfriend then breaks up after their like 10 year long relationship (theres a longer story here but im already rambling JSJWJ) and they show up at his door, forgetting that bokuto isnt home. they turn to leave but kuroo in a light pink 'kiss the fish' apron (theres a giant ugly fish on it and he bought it bcos he loves fish and it was funny) asks them to at least stay the night and sleep in bokutos room since its raining and late already.

i have all sorts of things planned for that week they end up alone and bonding properly, becoming fast friends. ive been working in this story since i made this blog actually KENDKDKSK 😭🧡 its just. hard to get around to writing it 😔👊🏼 its a super slow burn with not only containing plot from that week, but also from after and how they develop. i really wanna include tons of kenma and bokuto interactions as well; the snarky friendship comments from kenma and the ✨💕 bromance 💕✨ between kuroo and bokuto as big dynamics !! i think the reason its always been at the back burner is because im still undecided on How they end up confessing to each other. theres a few options being accidental in different scenarios and theres also some where its big and intentional and a lot of kuroo running while determined to let his feelings be known after being kinda constipated about them. its a hard knock life !!!

i know that the fandom here are so excited for byler endgame that it can make it seem like byler is a plot twist just because theyre gay, but actually i think the duffers have more respect for gay people than that! theyve told will's story so empathetically, that i think the plot twist would still be a twist if will was a girl and mike chose the girl next door best friend instead of the superhero. the twist is that mike isnt choosing the excitement of a superhero girlfriend over his 'normal' best friend, who could be seen as the sweet but safe option in a heterosexual pair, but that he is choosing a life just as exciting/hard by being with another boy. at least thats how i see it! i honestly dont think byler will be the biggest twist of s5 either, it just feels that way cos most people here are so desperate for byler endgame!

For the time being, i'm choosing to agree that I trust the DB's judgement and storytelling and film making abilities (esp w my boy Matty maybe being... fam lol sssssh I feel embarrassed whenever I mention it). What we've gotten so far has genuinely been wonderful. I cried at Robin's coming out scene. And I cried during the van scene. So.... they do have the chops. (Robin's scene actually hit me harder to be honest but that's - there are reasons haha.) And I guess the Robin reveal was a plot twist, thinking back? The whole season was played to lead up to a Steve/Robin moment and ohhhh was that handled so well. I guess I don't need to view "twist" so maliciously as a concept, really. I think what I mean, is that if it's not given the care and development and is just a gimmick thrown in during the final season then it being a twist is kinda disappointing? But again, I've said before that I think there's definitely enough time to delve into that storyline pretty deep alongside everything else that's going on. I really don't think they'll do that to us. But. You can't be 100%.

We have a waaaaays to go in modern media with queer stories and more vast representation and normalizing things, but this story? A major blockbuster television show? The nostalgia 80s show? Imagine if two boys in the Goonies got together. Imagine if any of the vibes of the Outsiders boys existed beyond subtext. Or the Stand By Me boys. Hell, imagine if IT actually allowed the implications to happen beyond tragedy and that was made like 6 years ago. Stranger Things changing the game. Super cool. Fingers crossed!!!

YOU SENT THIS AT THE BEST POSSIBLE TIME i was just typing up some long ass rambly summary of what i think theyve both got going on since i havent really elaborated in detail on here i dnt think but i drafted it cuz i wasnt sure anyone cared. hang on this is gonna be a long one buckle up

- darvo’s time in the corpus was tumultuous and nerve wracking. he had started off genuinely trying, he really had! but nothing he ever accomplished seemed to be good enough for his father and he started to get bitter and frustrated, so he started screwing things up on purpose.

- as a callback to the first appearance of the concept art that eventually became his design being that of a system boss, his actual “””real””” name was arn etina, and he was originally a proxy engineer before his dad decided to be a cunt and force him into politics because he needed someone to inherit the chairman position.

- another nod to his design being used for the old boss portrait, he actually did some work on the ambulas project wayyy back before glast’s animo system was even considered to have any combat applications, when the proxies were instead piloted remotely by actual engineers. he was one of em, and he worked his ass off - but he didn’t think weaponry was the best use of the technology. he thought ambulas had more potential in search-and-rescue, resource acquisition, and other stuff that involved environments too dangerous to send corpus crews into. while the remotely-piloted ambulas models were definitely impressive, they were outclassed by leaps and bounds by the tenno, who made very short work of any they encountered. thus, the project was technically considered a ‘failure’ and was scrapped against his wishes, despite him being adamant that he could prove it useful if he just had more time. he never got over this. to this day he’s just as furious about what’s become of ambulas as glast is, honestly, though he doesn't let on because his previous identity is a very close-kept secret for several reasons.

- shortly after alad’s first exile from the board, darv was scooted into the freshly-vacated ‘grineer-corpus relations’ position - partially in the hopes that a ‘proper board seat’ would help get him back into line, and partially as retaliation for his perceived “failures” on the ambulas project, and life in general. historically, grineer-corpus relations has been where you end up when you’re on the shit list, as it’s regarded to be an unpleasant job (mostly due to the fact that you’re often in close contact with grineer. yeah. corpus moment)

- despite hating anything and everything politics on principle, he actually doesn’t mind this all that much, and starts to really enjoy it when he realizes that he can use this position to screw with the board’s war profiteering bullshit. on paper, his job is to negotiate and de-escalate potential conflict — most who have held the position just use it to try and instigate in order to serve their own interests. he actually puts in the effort and does his job properly, part out of spite and part because he genuinely doesn’t see the point of wasting time money resources and lives fighting over nothing, and this pisses a LOT of people off.

- there's really no way to sugarcoat it - frohd is an abusive manipulative piece of shit. he takes out all of his frustrations on people who can't fight back - mostly his subordinates, but ESPECIALLY his son. im sparing the detail because i know it can be a trigger for a lot of people (myself included) but he really beats the hell out of the poor guy, and it only gets worse as time goes on and he starts pushing back and trying to stand up for himself. there are a few incidents that leave permanent injuries/scars that he tries his best to cover up to this day

- as if that's not enough, frohd is getting really fed up with this whole groneer-corpus relations position backfiring and making him look bad, so he puts his foot down and starts actively vetoing almost everything darv tries to accomplish in an attempt to intimidate him into backing down. there’s a lot of tension. his negotiations are sabotaged on more than one occasion, sometimes resulting in casualties. to add insult to injury, an attempt is made on his life during some sort of event or something i don’t really remember. he gets shot and the bullet barely grazes his skull. he’s mostly alright but shaken up BAD. he’s convinced that his father put out a hit on him.

- eventually snaps and decides to make a run for it, sneaking out of the medbay wing he was in and stealing the first ship he could get his hands on and just gunning it, not even in any particular direction, just trying to get as far away as possible. the ship is shot down in grineer airspace and he crashes. though no body is ever recovered, it's assumed he couldn't possibly have survived and thus arn etina is legally dead from this point onwards.

clem on the other hand starts off as just... kind of a nobody. runt of his batch, only barely managed to scrape by without being culled and really only made it at all because his superiors in the barracks he was stationed to happened to have a bit of a soft spot for the new guys and wanted to give him a chance. while he's more than capable, he's mostly nonverbal which makes it a bit hard to communicate with him , as well as a bit unpredictable - he's suspected to be defective because he keeps going off and doing his own thing because it 'makes more sense'. but rather than being put down they manage to have him redirected off to an unarmed base somewhere on uhh. god, it's been so long i forget where on the star chart i had him stationed. whatever. irrelevant. point is, this place pretty much existed solely to acclimate freshly de-tubed grineer and get them trained up with as many of the basics as possible before shipping them off to their actual stations. he likes it there! it's bittersweet, because almost everyone he meets isn't there for very long before leaving and they never come back, but because the structure is designated non-combat, they're not subject to as strict regulations and he and the rest of the "security detail" he's been assigned to can kinda just chill in between routine patrols and occasionally checking on things that fall out of orbit in the general facility.

at one point, there's some looming conflict with a corpus settlement on a nearby moon who insist theyre too close for comfort and risk retaliation if they dont relocate their base - but clem's superiors aren't too worried. they've dealt with the corpus before - this has been an ongoing problem ever since they set up a mining operation on that moon, but the corpus negotiator this time around is a decent guy and seems to think this is just as ridiculous as they do, so they're sure he'll take their side again and help get this resolved. except, they get to the meeting point and he's not there. they're informed that the previous head of grineer-corpus relations has "resigned, effective immediately" and that as a result, any offers he's made them are no longer valid and they're essentially at square one. there's a lot of bullshit back-and-forth, but everyone on the grineer side of things is PISSED that the corpus negotiator seemingly flaked out on them for no reason, while the corpus are now refusing to budge where they're at. they don't even have a proper interpreter, and they're getting nowhere.

TLDR negotiations fail and their base is now under threat of attack. despite being non-combat and having almost no weapons, they're ordered to fight back rather than retreat, despite insistence that the tube-fresh in the base won't stand a chance, half of them barely know how to handle a gun, and most of the armed security are there because they've got injuries or cloning defects that make them ineligible for combat deployment anyway - this, of course, includes clem. he's determined to stick around to fight anyway, but one of the higher-ups, one of the guys who managed to put in a good word for him and get him off the kill list, he pulls him aside and tells him to get the fuck out and take as many of the new guys as he can with him. he's a little confused, as that would be directly disobeying the queens' orders for him to stay put, but he trusts this guy and does as he's told.

clem and the handful of new recruits he manage to squirrel out of harm's way are the only survivors. not long after they get out, corpus craft swoop in and basically bomb the place out. he tries to go back in for his brothers, but by the time he makes it in, there's nothing left but rubble and bodies.

the grineer cut their losses. the handful of survivors are gathered up and shipped off to various other barracks in that corner of the system - an attack like this can't possibly go unpunished, and they need all the boots on the ground they can get. clem is shuffled around to another security detail elsewhere, though it's made fairly clear that this is his last chance to 'make himself useful', and if he goes against orders even once he's going right back into the vats with the other rejects. by this point, he honestly doesn't even care. he's disillusioned with the empire and to be frank, the only thing that motivates him to keep moving at all is thinking about the fact that the only reason that everything came crashing down around him was that one corpus bastard who backed out of negotiations at the last second. that's the only reason he's bothering to fight - he doesnt care about the queens anymore, he can't bring himself to become attached to anyone else at this new barracks, not after what just happened -- he just wants to give the corpus hell.

this is where we start to get into around the part that one little bit of writing starts off -- hes bitter and jaded and out for blood, and when they get word that a corpus ship's come down not too far out and they're sending a detail out to secure the wreck, he jumps on it-- but when he does finally find himself face-to-face with the pilot, for whatever reason, he can't fucking pull the trigger. there's something inside him that refuses to hate the poor bastard, stumbling around practically bleeding out and all but begging to be put out of his misery before he's recaptured. so, against his better judgement, he helps him. grabs him and runs, tries to wrap him up as best he can with whatever he can find. doesn't even know why he's doing this, but it just feels like the right thing to do. there's no going back now, anyway - no way in hell he's not getting executed if he shows his face again. they're in this together now, whether they like it or not.

it takes them a while to get their bearings and come up with a way to get off planet - they'd both heard that defectors would retreat to the tenno relays, the only real neutral zones out there, but they've both seen their fair share of tenno and aren't entirely thrilled to be at their mercy if they can help it. it's sort of a begrudging allyship at first - though its helped by the fact that theyve got a lot in common. at some point, theyre going over their sob stories, and neither of them really make the connection as to how closely connected they really are - clem never had a chance to meet that old negotiator, and thus would never recognize him as the man right in front of him. darv was barely conscious with a nasty head injury when their meeting was meant to happen, and someone else was assigned to the job to cover for him. he was pissed, of course, when he finally came to and found out what a mess they'd made of it while he was out of commission, but when the attempts on his life didn't stop he decided he had to choose his battles and eventually dropped it altogether, as it wasn't a hill he was ready to die on just yet.

when they do finally get the hell out of there, there's a moment where they're both sort of expected to part ways, yknow, go off to their respective factions' syndicates and settle in, but darv cannot fucking STAND the perrin sequence, he really cant. not only does he think theyre boring killjoys, but he's reached a point where being around that much corpus tech genuinely makes him anxious as fuck, it's too close to home and he doesn't like it one bit. clem fits right in with the steel meridian, they welcome him with open arms and he really does feel as close to home as he could get, but there's just something missing and he can't put a finger on it. he keeps wondering about that corpus weirdo, what he ended up doing and if he's still around or moved to a different relay. eventually, neither of them can take it much longer and both try to seek eachother out, and they're basically inseparable from that point on.

honestly, i personally feel like darv would be a lot more inclined to align with the meridian of any syndicate - i think it would be funny if he was just There. no corpus allowed, but we'll make an exception for this guy because clem really likes him and we just can't say no to clem. i guess he's alright. yeah okay he's technically an agent, but -- no yeah he covered up some of his old corpus tattoos with the insignia, pretty cool huh? yeah i dunno where clem found this guy but hes a weird one. hes funny though like obviously hes kind of stupid i mean hes corpus but we like him anyway. i guess he and glast have beef, i dunno why but he's not allowed on perrin property anymore so cressa just decided to let him chill here because it makes them really fucking mad and she loves it. i guess he's a decent shot too but like that's not too impressive, it's more relevant to us that he still can't fucking handle grineer alcohol after who knows how many years hanging around here and he always coughs and splutters like a little bitch every time and its fucking hilarious. oh hes a wanted criminal??? siiiiick. anyway were gonna go set shit on fire to see what explodes -- yeah of course hes gonna be there. what did he do before defecting? i dunno man he used to be an engineer or whatever i think, he doesnt talk about it much, but he can hotwire a dargyn in about thirty seconds and he helped us build a claymore roomba the other day for a prank so he's cool in my book bro

The more i think about it, the more baffled i become at the people saying this campaign feels significantly more railroaded than the others.

I mean, i can see why people might think that. At a glance, its like, “wow, Matt’s really pushing hard for this moon plot, like everything’s connected to it and they have this date to meet and they cant get anyone else’s story in!” But i feel like thats such a surface level analysis, and is likely born from people who have never dmed before. As an avid dungeon master myself, the Ruidis plot reads quite clearly to me as a set piece - This is an event fixed in time, fixed in the world, and the villains orchestrating it will do what theyre gonna do no matter what. Its actually quite similar to the chroma conclave arc in C1, or even more poignantly, the whitestone arc with Percy as the “main character” focus for an extended period of time, an arc that was anchored to a set place and a set time because thats what the villains were doing.

When you DM, one of the key things you learn is that when the players arent engaging with a plot thread, that thread continues to run its course in the background. Its what breaths life into the world, its what makes it feel real. Its also what nudges your players to engage with the world. When you telegraph this to them, they pretty quickly learn that if they hear of something bad thats gonna happen, and they choose not to engage for whatever reason, then that bad thing is Going To happen, and they will then be playing in the consequences.

The other part of this misperception of c3 being railroaded i think comes from the players having a much stronger and more cohesive sense of morals. The c2 gang was characterized by a rag-tag group of miss-fits with nebulous morals and motivations and histories, and who were much more self serving in their group goals. None of this is bad!! It made for a very interesting game to watch, and even more interesting characters. But this is very different from the way ive seen Bells Hells act as a team. BH has been seen to be at least somewhat altruistic in their motives - maybe individually theyre more self-serving - but as a team, theyve consistently made decisions that benefit “the greater good” without much question of whats in it for them (giving up Treshi to the government and helping the Greenseekers in the mines come to mind). So of course theyre going to chase the Big Bads when they hear about a world ending plot!! And this doesnt even factor in that like, as players, why the fuck wouldnt you want to chase the evil moon plot? The campaign i run is explicitly a sandbox, and yet my players have latched on to the main intrigue and have been following it as if “on a railroad”. When your main intrigue is constructed well, the players will want to follow it, because this is a game to be played for fun, afterall.

With these two facts in mind, this isnt Matt forcing them down a particular path, nor have the Bells Hells been bound to it by him at any point in the campaign. At any moment they could jump off this thread and go do something else. And maybe you’d say “but if they dont stop Ludinus, then the world will go to catastrophe!!!” Yeah. It would. Thats dnd, baby. That outcome would be just as beautiful as the Bells Hells success.

As an aside, i could see several paths this Apogee Solstice day could go. Everything could go off without a hitch, BH destroys the key, crashes the missile ship, and gets out unscathed. Or they could completely fail, Ryn destroyed, Predathos released, TPK. Or they fail in stopping Ludinus but manage to get out alive and have to deal with the consequences. Or they succeed but Ludinus and his lackies live and chase the Hells through to the end of campaign with an eternal burning hatred. There are endless possibilities here because Matt is a good DM who clearly values player agency and choice.

i tried so hard to like this game. i should like it. its got bugs. its got atmosphere. its got worldbuilding and multiple endings. but god i hate platformers. i hate metroidvanias. this was painful to play and i will not be playing any more.

10: project diva future tone (ps4) (2017)

its a rhythm game so it really cant go any higher. i like it more than megamix (plus using the playstation is better than the switch i think) but yknow. i cant say its got great characters or story yknow? but the songs are good and its fun

9: final fantasy x (2001, switch remaster 2019)

i wish i liked this game more… its good but so watery. such old graphics. idk i just couldnt get into it even if the ending was really good

8. tales of phantasia (1995, gba version 2006)

very surprised at how well it holds up. its a tales game so it ranks higher than it probably should for me, but the characters are fun, the gameplay is fun, and its the first game in the series, so its iconic as hell. the old graphics and lacklustre combat knocked it down a few points (as did the goddamn mines…) but the enjoyment i got from it won out. good game. i played the gba version

7. splatoon 3 (2022)

sorry for not playing the other splatoon games this shit is FUN. salmon run is so good, yall. i put more hours into salmon run alone than most other games ive ever played. stream deep cut

6. ys viii (2017)

im actually still playing this one but MAN is it enjoyable. killer soundtrack. cool time mechanics. challenging combat. nice well rounded cast of npcs (and theres like 20+ regular ones!). makes me wanna try the rest of the series. even tho im kinda peeved that theres like no content for this game here but WHATEVER its good. play ys viii.

5. pokemon scarlet (2022)

yes it had bugs & ur correct to say i shouldnt have bought it. but theyve really perfected pokemon games with this one. open world is the way pokemon is meant to be played. the new pokemon are really good designs. the story was actually riveting at the end, the rivals are up there with sun and sword for how well done they are, koraidon’s one of my new faves, and holy god the soundtrack is good. the literal only thing that would improve it would be if it had a bigger dex and wasnt made in such a rush. i wish this game had come out next year or the year after bc then itd be perfect.

4. triangle strategy (2022)

this is the first strategy game in the genre that ive played, and i enjoyed it! i played it 3 times in a row to get all the endings + ramping up the difficulty made it such a good challenge. npcs couldve been a bit better developed, and the roland/benedict endings were bad to play, but the overall enjoyment of the gameplay and different paths puts it so high to the top.

3. pokemon legends arceus (2022)

i know i said scarlet perfected the series but whatever. ive always preferred catching to battling and arceus did a better job of that. between that and the way your character could actually get involved in things its probably my fave pokemon game ever ehehe 😅

2. tales of arise (2021)

i dont care what anyone says this was a REALLY good entry to the series. i liked the story and the twists. i loved the characters. combat was excellent (law main ↖️) and exploration was more fun than other tales games. might not be my favourite tales game but its better than (almost) everything else from this year!

im gona take this as an opportuntiy to dump about general worldbuilding and shit. win. sorry this is gonna be long

so this entire ocverse (as most of my ocverses do) spawned from a dnd campaign, it was supposed to be my first time dming and i did for one session but then covid happened so like. yeah. but i still had this entire world id made and this story so i was like fuck it ocverse NEOW

the basic setup is kind of like. noir film esque vibe mobsters, based in one city (think its called grand tybury iirc), split up into 5 factions with a big river down the middle. each faction is governed by a god who is also a gang boss because i had a fucking mafia spin when i was 13 and by god i wasnt letting it go

theres two Original gods, the gods of life and death called lustris and ylta, and these two are kinda just like. fucking shmucks who like doing whatever the hell. if they get bored they yoink a random dying mortal and make them into a god and see what happens. so thats how you get four other gods who used to be mortal. respectively phiadia of knowledge/justice, birch of freedom/nature, answered riddle of trickery/luck and tempest of the water

the city is obviously not doing very well because theres fights for territory, most of the gods are horrible people aside from tempest who just hides in a boathouse and doesnt talk to anyone and birch who spends all their time high and tending to plants.

so she does what any sane person does and she kidnaps a baby and raises them as essentially a child soldier, grooming them into the perfect right hand to eventually kill the other gods. as she made the other gods Gods she also has the power to take it away, and she curses these brass knuckles that she gives to eklyre telling them that all they have to do is punch a god and theyll be rendered mortal again. then she sends them out into the world (after theyve been sheltered by her their whole life. theyre like 25 at this point)

she sends them to phiadias faction where eklyre successfully infiltrates her gang and works their way up the ranks until theyre her most trusted right hand, of course with the believed intent that theyll kill her. and they will, just not for the reasons youd expect. cause see yltas plan sorta kinda completely backfired and now eklyre is irreparably traumatised with a huge resentment towarsd their "mother" and from the decade theyve now spent quote unquote free from her theyve realised everything is her fault and their society is inherently unfair so theyve resolved to killing the gods themself to establish a new and equal society

and that is. essentially what they do. theres other characters that are actually the protagonists cause eklyres kinda supposed to be like an ally turned surprise secondary antagonist where the plot twist is they were never on phiadias side and want to kill everyone but then the protags get radicalised by them and everyone lived happily ever after

Yeah I’m currently studying atm and honestly have been failing every single year since 2019, so my student loan is already pretty high lol. I’m doing social sciences and whilst I do love them, idk…I don’t think I’m cut out for actually studying them. I actually did think of going to vic uni as well, but I always chickened out just cause welly is so far from my parents. I started at Auckland uni which I did enjoy, the year was just horrible, and now I’m at Waikato uni which I’ve grown to appreciate. Moreso appreciate the fact that it’s smaller so you know your lecturers a lot more, as well as it being cheaper and easy to navigate, hate the fact there aren’t as many options or opportunities in a lot of subjects here

I know that feeling. Auckland is pretty intense, from what my datacom/sci friends who went up there to study tell me. I don't blame you for needing to leave. I'm glad Waikato is suiting you better, I can absolutely see why it would be a nicer experience with a smaller crowd. Fucking sucks about the lack of subjects though. For me I went to vic because I needed that wide range to keep me invested and interested. But I do not miss the commute. $8-10 a day on a bus that only came every hour and took 45 minutes back and forth was hell. And when I lived in a hall, it meant walking up the terrace and mountain for 20-30 minutes every day to get to Kelburn campus or waste $2 going up the hill. It's what made me start exercising, actually. I was sick of wasting $2 every morning just to walk down the hill again hours later and i wanted to get the stamina to get up there faster. I got it down to 15-20 minutes but it still wasn't pleasant arriving at my courses sweaty and out of breath. That was back when. I was doing in person courses, covid changed that of course and the sudden flexibility about in person courses and tutorials was a blessing when my chronic issues flared up and i was unable to get out of bed.

Lecturers literally make the university. Part of shy I continued classics for so long was because the classics department at vic are the most wonderful, fun people. There was only one lecturer in my time who was an asshole about my illness, (a media lecturer) and I dropped her courses pretty smartly after that. Everyone else was exceedingly chill. Special shoutout to my media lecturer Peter who taught my policy course and has written so many awesome papers about media in NZ and was super understanding about my illness, my poetry lecturer Anna whose anthologies I buy whenever I see it on shelves and who had a lovely voice and gave me As on all my poetry, she's the reason I still write. Also Harry, fantastic NZ poet with multiple publications and taught out shakespeare and popular lit course. I had the honour of attending his final lecture before he retired and it was wonderful.

Final special mention Dougal, who scared me in 2018 when shouting "RED CARDIGAN. STOP" at me for talking in a narrative lecture like it was a power word kill spell. It put the fear god god in me. Funniest lecturer I have ever had, he once went on an 30 minute rant about how much he hates Avatar as a sci fi text and white saviour narrative. Taught my sci-fi lit course and my post-colonial lit course. Devastatingly intelligent and strong willed. He's the head of the union for the lecturers and thank god for that because theyve been going through some shit with the current govt. Most impressively to me, he held a stand in protest with a palestinian-jewish coalition of students at the university when they allowed two IDF soldiers who participated in a raid that killed civilians to give a talk on their campus years back. Never in my life have I been so intimidated and impressed by a man.
