More Maverick and Ethan being twins

The little idea of them being twins has infested my mind along with the Seresin twins. I’m also fighting off a cold by searing my throat with tea so this might be considered fever thoughts.

I just like dragging a character through the multiverse and throwing them at themselves in another world like “YOU’RE RELATED NOW!”

✰ Both of them are really chill with each other doing dumb shit. As long as they don’t die they’re good. They also can’t argue about it because it’s pot calling kettle black.

“Yeah, I jumped a bike off a cliff.”

“I got shot down by some SAMs, you have a chute?”

“Of course I had a chute.”

✰ Maverick keeps a trauma kit in his house for when Ethan drops in unexpectedly, he’s used to him bleeding in some way.

✰ Ethan is the only person who can call Mav, Peter.

✰ Ethan had to change his last name when becoming government property because they didn’t want him tied and tracked by Pete doing Pete things and vice versa.

⤷ Pete finds the last name Hunt very funny.

✰ They like to race on their bikes, Ethan almost crashes each time. They have the need for speed.

✰ Ethan gave Carol and Goose a heart attack when they first met him because he just appeared and they thought he was Mav.

✰ Very few people can tell them apart, even if they wear completely different styles. Benji and Luther can pick out Ethan and so can Bradley.

✰ Penny was also a victim of the Mitchell jump scare. So was Ice. They find it hilarious so they keep doing it.

✰ Pete was color coded red and Ethan was blue.

✰ Pete was born first.

✰ They are extremely competitive, things will be thrown, trash talk will be talked.

hot take maybe but the only reason most show runners/producers/writers/etc. age up the (female) characters from book to show adaptation is to overtly sexualize them and not face mass amounts of scrutiny for it.

put 13 year old daenerys next to 30 year old drogo and the audience understands that daenerys is a victim to him and not an equal. put 22 year old emilia clarke as daenerys next to 32 year old jason mamoa as drogo and they’re seen as a budding romance with a tragic ending (by the general audience) due to their on screen chemistry.

flash forward to today, and now we’re dealing with 21 year old milly alcock playing rhaenyra from 14-19 and how her relationship with (28 year old fabien) a mid twenties criston is seen as -morally acceptable- and not a result of a degenerate pedophile taking advantage of and grooming his charge. “ser criston protects the princess from her enemies, but who protects the princess from ser criston?” rhaenyra was 14 when rumors started speculating that she slept with an almost 30 year old criston. a criston who had know her since she was 8 and had been her sworn shield since she was 9. obviously seeing a teenager in the early stages of puberty next to a fully grown man would emphasize rhaenyra being THE victim, as opposed to the show having an 18-19 year old explore her sexuality and seek out ‘consensual’ sex with her peer bodyguard. the discourse has even reached the point where certain stans try to paint the much younger woman as the perpetrator and aggressor of this event, who forced the unassuming man into having sex with her.

i’ll even take this a step farther, and bring up how if they had shown a 19 year old alicent abusing a 10 year old rhaenyra it would be identified and mutually agreed upon as a reprehensible act on alicent’s part. instead they’re of similar age, so people can attempt to paint the picture as two women of equal standing hating each other, and not a much older woman bullying a motherless child. once again however, some stans even go so far as to try and paint alicent as a victim of rhaenyra, and not the other way around. further cementing this is how both versions of alicent are younger than both versions of rhaenyra, AND how criston is still played by an actor who is younger than older!rhaenyra despite his character being the same age as daemon in canon.

they know exactly what they’re doing too, considering they aged alicent down to give her that innate compassion one typically feels when seeing children being abused on tv (something that can no longer be applied to rhaenyra). despite that never being her story; *she* was the abuser, and rhaenyra was her victim. criston’s victim. it’s a nasty cop out, and i wish more people would call out how sickening it is to flip the switch and attempt to make abusive individuals more sympathetic than the *actual* victims of said abusers.

And well, since the twins were born some years after the NRC, I’m not sure they’d stayed in touch with everyone so let’s just pick the major ones.

Sure Rook asked them a million times to be their godfather and Leona utterly refused a million times too. Ruggie obviously offered his services as a nanny while Jack acted like a nanny during Vil’s pregnancy because (one among so many other points) no way Vil would stop his usual training. Leona tried to talk some sense into him but Vil gave him a severe dressing down that he never tried again.

hey friends I’m looking for some reading recommendations!

I’ve just been rereading old favorites, which is a joy, but I’m hankering for something new to surprise me and capture me. I’m open to anything but have particular soft spots for:

- narrators or POV characters with distinctive, atypical voices, perspectives, or assumptions who make an ordinary or extraordinary world more interesting by being seen through their lens (ex. Martha Wells’ Murderbot, owlet’s This, You Protect)

- clever, precise plotting and storytelling such that final conclusions or reveals click together like delightful, unexpected but perfectly predictable clockwork— the sort that you can see obviously in the first chapter but only after you’ve read the last page; stories where the authors trust the reader to pay attention and figure stuff out (ex. Megan Whalen Turner’s The Queen’s Thief series, The Westing Game, Pamela Dean’s The Secret Country)

- worldbuilding with depth and texture — it feels explorable, immersive, like you could study it, like you could get lost, like other stories are going on just off the page (The Secret Countey gets a second honorary mention here, great book, I highly recommend)

- characters you can root for, especially ones that are slowly, quietly, unregretfully tearing themselves apart for something they care about (Kip Mdang from Hands of the Emperor, Newt from Designations Congruent with Things, Nico D’Angelo from the Percy Jackson books, Arthur in rageprufrock’s Presque Vu)

I like stories with momentum, stories that swallow you. I like beautiful things. I like stories that surprise me and make me think. Help a gal out? What stories have captured you?
