all names, characters, places, incidents are fictitious,
i'm sorry if there are mistakes,
a little bit creepy story (i watched too many horror movies lol),
pictures are edited in an online editor,
random names.
POV:
Chai and Prin are friends and co-workers. It's vacation time. Chai (1) is relaxing on a remote island called A, and Prin (kh) is on a business trip in Korea. They communicate via online mail. This is how they tell each other the latest news.
[1] Chai:
Hello, my dear friend. My holiday is going great, although it is a pity that you are not here. I think you would like to visit this place too. The local food is so delicious. The nature is so beautiful. I have attached a photo of the lighthouse we visited today. It is a very interesting and mysterious place. Actually, the guide did not want to take us here because this place has a bad reputation. But we persuaded him to come here (it was a difficult task). He did not want to.
picture 1:
This place has a bad reputation because people often disappear here. The last case happened just two months ago. A newlywed couple just disappeared. It's so creepy. But we still wanted to visit this place.
There are many rumors about this place. Some say that this lighthouse is some kind of portal, someone says that it is an entrance to another worlds, someone says that it is an entrance to another dimension, someone even insists that it is some kind of wormhole and through this lighthouse you can get to other galaxies. I have never visited places like this. I was so excited.
[2] Prin:
Hello, dear friend, I received your letter. I am glad that you are having a good time. We are doing well, we are discussing and agreeing on the strategy of cooperation with the company S, everything is going well, and it is quite boring. The story about the lighthouse seems very interesting, I would not mind visiting it too. Maybe next time we will go on holiday together?
By the way, I also encountered something unusual and mysterious, no, I'm kidding. You know, I had such an interesting dream, in this dream I seemed to have passed through many different worlds and even met a cat. So funny. This dream excited me so much that I asked a local artist to draw a couple of pictures based on my dream. I am sending you these drawings.

[3] Chai:
Hello, friend. I'm glad everything is going smoothly for you. Please try to have fun. I also like your suggestion for the next vacation.
I looked at the pictures you sent me, they are quite interesting. As for me, I don't dream anything.
I feel a little weird because our guide suddenly disappeared (it's so strange). He didn't tell anyone about his plans, he doesn't answer his phone, no one in the company knows where he is. I'm a little worried about him. We're leaving soon.
[4] Prin:
Hello, friend. I feel sorry for your guide, and I hope he will be found soon. I am also leaving Korea soon, we have almost finished the negotiations on our cooperation project. I think everything will be fine.
Actually, I had another interesting dream and you were in this dream too. I was so excited and happy. We visited so many different places together. I am sending you some pictures. Maybe I think about you too much and that is why I dream about you, I am joking of course. But it's true that sometimes I feel lonely, especially when the evenings are so foggy.

picture 3:
[5] Chai:
Prin, this is so creepy. But it seems to me that you dreamed of the place where I am now, I recognized these places immediately. It's so strange, because I only sent you a photo of the lighthouse. And how did you know about the other places, can you explain? Did you find and look at photos of other travelers, and that's why it stuck in your memory? My friend, I have goosebumps, please admit it that you've already been here. I'm waiting for your answer.
[6] Prin:
The fog is dangerous, human. Throughout the centuries I have tried to warn ships and people that the fog is dangerous, but they do not listen to me. I'm so lonely.
[7] Chai:
Well, that's funny, you're scaring me on purpose, my friend, hahaha. Are you pretending to be a lighthouse, what a funny joke. Okay, I'll write to you tomorrow when you're more serious.
The next day, Prin did not respond, nor did he answer his phone. Chai was worried and sent email to his company's director to find out how to contact Prin in Korea.
[8] Company director:
Hi Chai, whatâs going on? I was so shocked when I got your mail! Please let me know where exactly you are! Itâs been three months since you went to that damn place for a vacation, and whether you know it or not, you and your fellow travelers have disappeared. And Prin has disappeared too. He asked me not to tell you back then that he wasnât going to Korea because he wanted to surprise you, so he followed you to that island. We havenât had any news of him since. We havenât been able to contact him or you on your phones. Please call me or someone else and let us know how to find you. Iâm sending you all the contacts you can use to report your whereabouts.

MASTERLIST
After constantly meeting with Sukuna for several months, he invites you over to his place following an early dinner and you found out that he has a cat. It was grumpy just like him with black fluffy fur and luminous eyes that seemed to follow your every move with human-like intelligence as if it was judging you. It stayed close to its owner, slinking its body against his leg and later sitting on his lap like nobody's business as if to tell you, "He's mine. Fuck off."
It didn't like you.
At least the cat was clear about its feelings towards you. Its owner, you couldn't be too sure. You don't even know why he invites you out, his intentions as vague as how this whole thing between the two of you started. One day, you met through a common friend who was obviously setting the pair of you up, and when you thought you wouldn't see his face again â a fair assumption after he behaved rather rudely, saying he wasn't interested â he somehow got your number and eventually asked you out.
You chalked that up to him being apologetic after you called your friend out for subjecting you to Sukuna again, the choleric jerk that he is, but then promised on his mom's grave that he only gave your number to Sukuna and that was it. Everything he did was of his own volition, and you were torn about it. Maybe he found you attractive, just that he didn't like the idea of being set up. Maybe he wasn't really absolutely rude and wanted to make it up to you for giving you that impression. Who knows? You weren't that much interested, but you gave him a chance.
Well, he was attractive in an acquired taste kind of way, built impossibly tall and broad, hair in short, wavy tendrils that was the color of rosy dawn, rough around the edges, almost brutal in the way he says and does things. Strangely, you liked looking at him enough to actually spend time with him.
None of your speculations were proven. Ryomen Sukuna wasn't apologetic, not even remotely. He invited you to dinner, didn't put up much of a fight when you insisted to split the bill in half, and he wasn't overly polite either. He spoke in that same uncouth manner without putting up much of any pretense in front of you, not that you were offended. He's a potty mouth, you already knew that, but you'd rather have him speaking his mind in all honesty.
You didn't think he was all that attracted to you. Interested, probably, but that was difficult to decipher, too, at least the manner in which he found you interesting. Your so-called meetings were rather quiet with either of you refusing to say more about yourselves. It was torture for the first three times with your longest sentences to each other being three words long. You would say hello to each other, eat in silence with occasional comments about the food and then he would walk you to your car and bid each other good night. Everything felt forced and it was torture.
But to your surpise, he would invite you out again just when you thought there wouldn't be a repeat to whatever it was that you had going on. Why? You didn't know. Until it became a routine. And then you found yourself spending more time with him, mostly over meals on random days or just convenience store coffee when it's too late in the night to do anything. Both of you were busy after all.
Which brings you to your current situation. In his high-rise apartment that didn't look lived in. On a Saturday night. With his very possessive, very grumpy cat.
But you saw a very different side to Sukuna with his little pet. He didn't smile, he smirked. But with his cat, which he fondly called Ume, he did just that, gently scratching at its belly and talking silly with it. You sat there awkwardly, feeling like you've intruded on something private.
"You can pet her," Sukuna told you, making you go stiff on your spot when he looked at you as if you were an afterthought. He seems to be in a playful mood even prior to the whole cat scenario, smiling more, acting more gentlemanly, not that he wasn't on most times you spent together. It had you confused even if it had been going on for the last several times you've met with him. Or more precisely since that day you started saying more than three words to each other, conversing normally.
"I...don't think I should," you told him, eyes intent on the black fluff on his lap. Ume sat up as if it understood what you were talking about, eyes narrowing into slits from how they've been round and wide from its owner's attention.
Sukuna scooted closer to you, close enough for you to see cerise flecks in his dark irises. "You don't like cats?" He asked that question as if you were a walking red flag if you responded incorrectly according to his standards.
You shook your head. "No, it's not that. Ume doesn't seem to like me."
He looked at his cat then at you, brows furrowing. "Well, that's a problem," he deadpanned.
Was he fucking serious? You didn't want to delve into the intricacies of his statement as he continued to run his fingers through Ume's fur. But to say you were offended was an understatement, and you wanted nothing but to get the hell out of his house. So much for warming up to the idea of progress where your odd relationship was concerned.
Without thinking, you stood up from the couch, trying your best to keep your expressions neutral albeit taking herculean effort. "I think I should go."
Sukuna solemnly nodded, looking down and biting his lower lip, making you frown. He looked contrite, but you did see a ghost of a smile there, or perhaps you just imagined it. "I'll go get my keys."
"I can call a cab," you stated, your petulant mood seeping through your words, but he didn't wanna argue about that and insisted on driving you home. Why you didn't drive separately like you usually did was beyond you. What were you expecting anyway?
The drive had been quiet and you were annoyed that he was grinning, even letting out a chuckle here and there even if you were blatantly ignoring him. You just endured it until you arrived in front of your apartment complex.
But instead of getting out of his car, you just sat there. You glared at him when you saw how he was suppressing a smile as he reached over and undid your seat belt for you.
"What's so funny?" you demanded.
"You are."
Oh, okay. You scoffed. This was definitely the last time you were going out with him. You pursed your lips, trying to keep your frustration at bay. "I guess this is it."
Sukuna arched a brow at you, looking pissed yet oddly more charming that way. You hated that about him. "What?"
You rolled your eyes at him, not having any intention to lose to his temper. "I'm going. Bye â" You managed to open the door, but he reached out and closed it again, trapping you on your seat with his muscular arm.
"I don't think so, sweetheart," he stated, looking amused of all things.
"Sweetâ Let me out."
"No."
You shrugged, lacking the energy to argue. "Go back to your cat, Sukuna."
He smirked at you then. "Are you jealous?"
"Offended is more like it."
Silence followed your words as you just watched Sukuna pushing his tongue against his cheek before chuckling again, his deep voice filling the car. "Damn, if I knew it would be this easy to see this side of you, I would have taken you home sooner."
You spun on your seat, shooting him a dirty look. "What?" You were beyond confounded. You wanted to reach out and smack him on the head, anything to release the sudden burst of emotions you didn't even imagine you would feel towards Sukuna in all those times since you've first met, let alone in a span of minutes and a few choice words.
"I don't get why you kept taking me out despite the fact that we couldn't fucking communicate properly with each other â"
"You agreedâ"
"âand you think the fact that your cat hates me is a major problem?" you finally exploded. "And you're doing this on purpose, too!"
At that, he burst out laughing.
"It's not funny!"
He sighed, letting up on his mischief as he tried to reach out and touch you, but you slapped his hand away. "Come now. Don't be mad, sweetheart."
"I'm not your sweetheart."
Sukuna took your hand in his, placing it against his cheek. You flinched, feeling his warmth against your palm, but he didn't let you pull it back. "I'm sorry. I just couldn't help teasing you all this time."
"Trust me, you did more than that." You made a face at him.
"It's just so hard to get any reaction from you. You're too damn quiet and I can't get a read on you. I can't even tell if you like being with me or not."
You let up on the barb, your anger fizzling to slight annoyance at the thought that he was puzzling about your intentions towards him as much as you were about his.
Sukuna gave your hand a gentle squeeze. "At least now I can tell you care enough to be offended at the prospect of me rejecting you because my cat dislikes you." He then tucked your hair behind your ear. "I want to see more. See what makes you tick. See more beyond my precious arctic sprite."
You were flustered by his words, the possessive way he addressed you, making you squirm on your seat, but in a good way. "Well, you'll get more ice if your tactic to get to know me better is to piss me off."
Sukuna cupped your face with both hands. "Knowing what you don't like makes it easier for me to know the opposite."
"You're a jerk."
"I know, baby. But you don't dislike me, do you?"
It was your turn to keep a serious face as you looked away from him and said, "That depends on my dog."
He smirked at you. "You have a dog?"
"No."
"So..." He scratched placed his hand at the back of his neck and you understood it as embarrassment from small talk, belated after months of knowing each other. "Do you like cats or dogs?"
"Spiders."
Sukuna looked taken aback but he just nodded. "Cool."
Suddenly, and for the first time in front of him, you started snickering much to his astonishment. You were giving him more than he's asked for in one go, and it was overwhelming him in ways he didn't imagine.
And then you said, "I like cats, too."
Just then, he placed an arm at the back of your seat and leaned towards you. "There's something else I want to know whether you would like or dislike."
You turned your head towards him. "What's that?"
"This." He closed the remaining gap between you, his lips dipping to find yours in a kiss, albeit quick was enough to hot-wire your brain and for blood to rush under your cheeks. "So?"
"I don't â"
Kiss. "How about now?"
You're much to dazed to say anything.
Kiss. This time, he lingered a tad longer, moving to coax your lips to respond, but he pulled away much too quickly, grinning when you moved forward to chase his lips, your hands shooting out to hold him in place, savoring his warmth and the way he felt against you.
Safe to say you liked it. Very much.

Little Thief (Part 2)
Part 1 Part 3
Summary: Red Hood has a new informant, and nobody likes it. Two of the bats meet them. Itâs not what they expected.
Trigger Warning for starvation and animal/child abuse. Read at your own risk.
Also, there is angst, but I promise it will get better soon đ
I'm Dyslexic, and don't have a beta, so spelling mistakes are likely to happen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Red Hood had a new informant. One he would not name. And nobody liked it. This mystery individual had given him the location of Cobblepotâs new scheme a month ago, a warning about a big bank robbery two weeks later, and a tip to look into what the Black Mask was doing five days ago. It was good information, but Batman (being paranoid as he was) didnât trust it, and neither did anyone else. It was likely a trap, but Jason protected his informant with such passion that nobody could get anything out of him. At least, not until today.
Jason was out of commission for a week, and Gotham was in deep trouble. The Joker had broken out of Arkham and despite thoroughly examining every inch of every abandoned or rundown theme park, amusement center, and playground in Gotham, they hadnât found a trace. It took a mix of bribery, black mail, threat of bodily harm and a significant amount of painkillers for Jason to agree to give them instructions on how to get the information they wanted. Which is how they ended up on a random rooftop with a bag of fast food.
~~~
Two figures made an unwelcome arrival at your designated meeting place. Instead of a single pair of feet softly falling on to the roof, and the air being filled with the familiar scent of sweat, gunpowder, and campfire cologne mixing with deep fried chicken, the wind sent a wave of overpowering floral detergent, mint shampoo, and citrus no-tear soap to assault your senses. The sounds of two individuals landing harshly on the roof stabbed at your sensitive ears, and even though the moonlight glowing from behind them obscured their appearances, you could price together who had intruded upon your night.
They both scanned the roof from their vantage point, and you crouched closer to the ground and leaned against the brick box that functioned as an access point to the roof, hoping the shadows would hide you long enough to make an escape plan.Â
After seeming to confirm there was no human in sight, the taller of the two figures turned to examine the surrounding buildings, and the smaller crossed his arm over his chest and huffed.
âI donât trust this,â the smaller one petulantly mumbled, quite enough you werenât sure the man behind him could have heard, âEverything about this is suspicious, the secrecy, the location, the set up⌠who trades information for a burger of all things.â
âI heard you the first seven times Robin,â the taller of the two answered, dropping a familiar looking paper bag on the ground before arching into a handstand, âbut this is the best â and currently the only â shot we got.â The words hung in the air for a moment before he added, âand itâs not a burger, Jay was very particular about thatâ
The boy huffed in frustration and looked ready to lose his temper, but with the cargo confirmed as food, your plans of a quick quiet escape were all but abandoned. Even with the smaller one â Robin â facing away momentarily to glare at his upside down companion, the temptation of food was just too strong. You hadnât seen Red Hood in three days, nor had you eaten in just as many, and your stomach ached with need. Under better circumstances you could have dove between the two and stolen away with the food, but the past several days had been brutal, and every movement hurt. You opted to stay where you were, in hopes a better opening may present itself.
The taller of the two righted himself to his feet, and looked around at the surrounding building again, before lifting one hand to his ear, âyou sure we got the right place? I donât see anyone⌠no I checked, Iâm sure. What do you want us to do, just wait around? For what?! Yes⌠Yes! I understand that, but is this really â no, I promise. And whoâs fault is that?âŚâ he spoke heredity and harshly, and with all the standard Gotham street noise closer than it could be, it took you a moment to register the mumbling of another voice. You scooted closer in hopes of hearing the other side of the conversation, but due to a mix of pain and exhaustion, you stumbled, disturbing some of the debris around you, and while the taller of the two remained seemingly oblivious to your presence, Robinâs piercing eyes locked on you your location, still obscured in the shadows.
He grabbed hold of the sword on his back, and confidently stepped forward. You hesitated for a moment, before carefully extracting yourself from the dark, staying close to the ground in hopes of seeming as small as possible. Robin froze for a moment upon first impression, though his face was unreadable. He slowly sheathed his sword, and in turn you rose from the ground to stand. He took a soft step forwards, and you did not back away. He took another slow step towards you, lowering himself slightly, trying to appear less frightening, and in turn you made a small shuffle forward. By this point Nightwing had fallen silent, watching your careful dance with his companion. A delicate back and forth until you were three feet apart.
âWhat are you doing here thalabun?â he asked softly, more rhetorical than anything. You weren't sure how to answer the boy, how to explain your relationship with crime ally's guardian, so you stayed there, looking at him, examining is spiky hair and soft skin, familiarizing yourself with the citrusy smell that wafted off him, listening to his faint, controlled, rithmic breaths.Â
âGive me the bag,â his voice was sharp and stern again, head aimed at his elder.
âNo way,â came a swift response, âwe need it for the informant, remember?â
âI'll only take a little, look at it!â Robin exclaimed gesturing to you, âplus we've been here for almost twenty minutes. I donât think theyâre coming.â
Nightwing seemed to mull it over, carefully examining you, before picking up the bag and launching it at a waiting Robin. Robin unwrapped the chicken sandwich, and pulled off a piece of the patty, tossing it at your feet, where you quickly lapped it up. Nightwing wandered over to where his partner was sitting on the ground and dropped beside him.
âOk Robin. What's next? The informant is a no-show, and we still need to find the joker. Where else could he be?â they both sat in silence considering the question, pondering what â or rather where â they missed. A small, strangled âyipâ echoed into the damp cold of the night, and both vigilanties snapped their attention back to the fox. It yipped again, tail wagging, as if to say ask me.Â
âYou wouldn't happen to know where the joker is, would you?â Nightwing asked, almost sarcastically. He got a yip in response, and a head bob that resembled a nod. That made him pauseâŚ
âYou do?â he repeated, beginning to doubt his vision and sanity. But as if to assure him of both, the creature repeated the gesture. âCould you show us?â
That⌠was a bit more difficult. Your body hurt and you were tired, three days of no food, little sleep, and constant harassment from kids, store owners, and wild animals alike had taken a toll. But you wanted to help. To be useful. At least to pay back the kind souls for feeding you, but also because doing good felt nice. And very little seemed to feel nice these days. So you summoned what strength you had, and launched yourself at them, leaping between, and landing on the hard floor with surprising grace. You pushed all your energy, all your hope, and strength, and thankfulness, into your legs so that they would go, go, GO!
You made it just short of the edge of the roof before your legs gave out and you were consumed. By darkens. By pain. Your back hurt, burning with every cut and bruise you had ever received. Your legs stung and ached. Your stomach clawed at your flesh begging to be filled or released from its prison. You were surrounded by darkness. Deep and unending, it was cold and quiet, yet all too loud, swallowing you, leaving you with nothing but pain. Everything hurt. So, so much. And you were alone, with no one to treat your wounds or hug your suffering heart. There was no warmth to reach for, no soft blankets or squishy stuffed animals. Just you, alone, cold, and in pain.
Two small, steady hands buried themselves beneath you, before carefully leaning you against something soft and sturdy. A kind hand shifted to run from the top of your head to the base of your tail, before repeating the motion. It was soothing, inside and out. Slowly the pain alleviated, and your breathing evened out. The dizzy feeling lifted, and you summoned all of your will power to crack open your eyes just a bit. You were met with the soft concern of Robin, worry visible even though the mask he wore. Robinâs steady breathing softly lifted you ever so slightly, and you focused to match his breathing: in and out, in and out. He smelled clean and strongly of oranges. It reminded you of the girls home you had lived in for six months before it was shut down for feeding the kids expired food. It was not a good place, but it was kinder than many others. You had missed the smell.Â
âHow about I carry you and you point to where we need to go?â he recommended softly, still running his hand down your spine. You basked in his warmth and soft touch for a moment longer, trying to regain your strength, before shifting in his hold and pointing at Gothamâs skyline.Â
âThat way?â You briefly nodded in confirmation, and both boys launched themselves off the roof and into the night air.
You had never seen Gotham from this perspective. Sure you climbed up fire escapes, and sat atop many buildings, but it was nothing like this. Nothing like soaring through the air, skyscrapers flying by. The way the wind licked freely at your hair reminded you for a moment of a trip you had taken with your mother long ago. She was driving on an empty dirt road, heading to the beach. The air was sunny and warm, the breeze swayed the trees in a methodical way, and your mother had let you stick your whole upper torso out the window. Distant street noises brought you back to reality, and looking down you saw the cars and people, they reminded you of Mr. Knoxâs toy train display, the one that nobody but him was ever allowed to touch. They all looked so small from here.Â
Eventually you all landed outside a junkyard with a broken front gate. You led them inside, between piles of broken cars and rubbish, around the sharp metal and spilled oil, all the way to a faded, rusty, ice cream truck. Its hood was dented, the paint was chipped, and it was missing its two back tires, but a distinctive, infuriating, familiar laugh radiated from the inside.
The two vigilantes exchanged a look, before Nightwing turned to you and held out a crinkled paper bag.
âI guess you were Hood's little informant,â he breathed out. You gladly accepted the payment, and retraced your steps out of the junkyard and into the concrete jungle of Gotham.
Once you were long out of view, and hidden in a grimy abandoned back alley, you softly plopped the bag on the ground. Your food was in a bag and wrapped in foil, youâd need thumbs to get it out. You didnât like being in human form, not right now. You were skinny in both forms, but without the fur coat being a fox provided, the wind and cold seemed to sink right into your bones. It didnât help that your small amount of clothing had definitely seen better days. But food is more important than momentary discomfort, so you shift, trading your tail and matted fur for arms and skin.Â
You unwrap your chicken sandwich and sink in your teeth. The bread gives way softly, and a delicious crunch sounds as the lettuce brakes away into your mouth. The tomato bleeds its sweet juices onto your tongue, and as your mouth finally closes around the first bite of food youâve had in days, you realize that by some miracle, despite the hour weight and cold conditions, the center of your crispy, chewy chicken patty was still warm. You barely finish chewing the first mouthful before taking a second, desperate for food and warmth.
You wonder if Red Hood is ok.
Thank you all so much for reading! Let me know what you think đ
Notes:
Nightwing and Robin intentionally landed loader than they normally would in hopes of alerting the informant they had arrived, since they were expecting a human.
Jason, on the other hand, always tries to be especially quiet when coming to meet you because he knows your ears are sensitive.
'thalabun' is fox in Arabic according to google translate. if this wrong please, please let me know, as I intend to use it with some consistency moving forward.

sorry won't cut it â sam and dean winchester
pairing : sam and dean winchester x gn!sibling!reader â⢠genre : angst, hurt/comfort â⢠cw : set in season 8 LOL, sam and dean are kind of/definitely assholes to reader, swearing, arguments, crying, use of kid, kiddo, honey, and sweetheart to refer to reader, only light editing â⢠wc : 4K summary : you meet up with sam to discover that dean is back from purgatory, and both have been keeping secrets from you.
when sam answers your call, it comes as a relief. a surprise, but more than anything, a relief. itâs been two and a half months, almost on the dot, since heâs answered a call. usually itâs just one month. he has a single burner phone just for you, but itâs off half the time, and the other half he never answers.
youâve grown used to his distance, to an extent. it still stings when your phone rings till voicemail sometimes, but youâve just been too tired to argue with him, to ask him to comfort you, make him keep hashing through the pain of looking for dean and finding nothing but trouble.Â
you want him to have the normalcy, the girl who loves him and makes him feel alright. you want to have faith that heâll figure out how to factor you into it all eventually, but you still miss him, and youâre still lonely, so you keep calling, never getting angry or upset when he occasionally picks up. you just act like itâs normal, and you can tell he appreciates it, so you keep it up. in return, he asks you over sometimes, tells you each time how much amelia raves about you after you leave, hugs you tight before you go.
itâs been several months since heâs invited you over, and he doesnât really talk about her anymore. you figure something must have happened, but you never push anything anymore with him.
this call is different. one, because he finally picks up. two, because he tells you to meet up with him, no explanation or normal talk about what you should bring for dinner. three, he asks you to meet at a random address in kansas.
he sighs deep, âjust⌠get here as soon as you can. iâll send you the location.â then he hangs up and it feels like the hunting life all over again.
â˘
itâs a seven hour drive, and youâre tired out of your mind, high-strung and worn out from leaving right after your shift at a diner full of sleezes who donât tip enough. even though this whole thing is strange for the new, hunting-free sam, thereâs relief coursing through you at the thought of seeing him, hoping heâll let your tired feet carry you right into his arms. you pull into a driveway of sorts, no obvious entrance to the unremarkable building in front of you, but your years of hunting and meeting up with your brothers at strange places during strange hours after strange calls help you find the door. it's a bunker, one you've never seen before.
you were always a little bit more like sam, disillusioned to the hunter life and the way your father raised you. you werenât a fighter like him, but you slipped away at eighteen to go to college and found somewhere near stanford so youâd be able to visit sam often. he loved that, always so glad that you got out too. but you were barely gone a year before dean came back to collect you and sam to look for your dad. you came easier than sam, less attached to your new place and always finding yourself missing dean.
thatâs what youâd been doing this past year. missing dean, and painfully. so when you knock on the door, calling out, âitâs me, sammy,â you freeze when it opens several beats later.
because the person behind the door isnât sam. but it is your older brother. just the one whoâs been stuck in purgatory for the last year or so, the one youâve endlessly searched for to no avail.
âdean?â your voice is small as his name slips from your mouth.
his eyes go soft, the way they rarely get, and the slight smile on his lips is half pained, half pure relief to see you after so long. âhey, kid.â
you launch yourself into his arms, and he catches you easy, right there in the doorway, and you have to fend off tears that you know wouldnât put up so much of a fight if you werenât so exhausted. but you were raised tough, and winchesters donât cry all that often, at least not where someone else can see. so you swallow hard and tough it out, letting dean pull away from you and lead you inside. he moves through the house with a sort of ease heâd only have if he felt comfortable and safe there. this raises questions, along with the fact that he's here at all.
youâre speechless, but not for a lack of anything to say. endless questions stream through your mind, each one pushing to be asked, even more desperate to be answered.
but the only thing you can figure out how to say is âhelloâ to sam when he greets you in the living room. he pulls you into a hug, letting you linger for a moment before you know you have to ask all of the hard questions. something in his face is unreadable to you, which is rare when it comes to your brothers. if you didnât know any better, youâd think it was a hint of guilt. that rings alarms in your mind, but you brush your nerves aside when dean takes a seat on the couch.
you relax a bit when you sink down next to him, curling into his side a little. it makes you feel a bit childish, but you need it after everything this past year. he doesnât hesitate to wrap his arm around your shoulders and pull you a little closer. sam sits down across from the two of you and you heave a sigh, wondering where to start.
opening your mouth and forcing words out is like a crack in a dam. everything comes out slow at first, but that lasts mere seconds before the flood.
âhow did you⌠dean, how did you get out? i mean, i triedâ i tried everything,â your voice breaks at that word, the weight of it meaning something only you understand. you look at him, brows taught and youâre confused by the surprise on his face, as if he didnât expect you to say such a thing.
âwhat do you mean, you tried everything?â he asks, voice suddenly gruff and severe. you recoil from his side to get a better look at him. you donât miss the look he shoots sam. this is already departing from what you expected, which is probably exactly what you should have expected. itâs just that, when dean hugged you back and he was solid and real and alive, when he sat on the couch instead of a chair so you could sit next to him, you thought that maybe, just maybe, youâd be able to stay tucked safe into his side as they told you what happened, as they asked you to stay with them.Â
âwhat do you mean?â you shoot back. âwhat, did you think iâd just kick back and call it someone elseâs problem?â
âthatâs what sam did. thatâs what sam said you did.â his voice is accusatory and when you whirl to look at sam, utter bewilderment evident on your face, you can see him physically grimace. which means deanâs telling the truth.
âsam did what?â the question sounds like itâs targeted for dean, but youâre staring the younger down.
âlisten, iâ no, you know what, iâm not going to explain myself on this again. what do you mean you did everything, you said you were going to school?â sam looks irked and defeated all at once.
âthat is completely beside the point, sam, you lied to me?â you ask incredulously, âbut youâre not going to explain to me why? why you lied to me or why you apparently didnât look for dean, i mean are you crazy?â deanâs hand on your shoulder prevents you from standing as your voice grows louder.
âlisten, kid, sam and i, weâve already hashed this out, okay? itâs uhâ itâs fine, alright?â with the way he says the word âfineâ, you know that it still bothers dean, so you canât understand why heâd say so. âweâve got things to discuss here,â dean tries to reason with you before sam can respond. heâs no peace maker, but a full blown fight between the two of you could have an ugly ending.
âthings to discuss?â you repeat, in disbelief of the audacity. knowing them, that means they need something from you, which begs the question of why sam asked you over in the first place. you donât even want to think about them having ulterior motives outside ofjust wanting to see you, so you brush it off angrily. âwell, iâm glad to hear that you two have hashed it out, but i havenât yet, so we can discuss whatever that is later.â you shrug off deanâs hand, trying to focus on the things youâre already angry about instead of asking the even bigger question nagging at you now. when the hell did dean get back that those two had time to hash out something that major? you turn your anger back to sam, thinking about what it was like when dean first disappeared. âyou told me you looked. you told me you did all that you could, that you tried everything in your power. now deanâs telling me that you did jack shit?â
sam sighs heavily. âyes, okay. listen, iâm sorry i lied to you, alright? but i just wanted you to try and live your life for once. i figured if i told you i did everything i could, that, i donât know, maybe youâd give up and try to move on? go to school, do something you love, have real friends, maybe find someone?â he throws his hands up in the air, a defeated gesture because he knows you donât agree, while he still thinks he did the right thing.
you scoff, because, god, he really has no idea. arms crossed and face the kind of calm that says run to anyone on the other end of your anger, you nod in false understanding. âyeah, what good that did,â you say, your tone so sarcastic and dry that sam just clenches his jaw and deanâs face turns from concerned to full-blown worried. he wonders if he should ask what that means, because whatever it does, itâs certainly not âgood.âÂ
but you pick up again after a moment of thick, dripping silence. âyou know, sam, you have absolutely no idea how this past year really was for me. iâm not saying it was easy for you, because i know it wasnât. though now i know you also skipped the trouble of looking for your stuck-in-purgatory-brother and really, actually lived that hunting-free life you wanted.â sam cringes at the venom in your voice. âall iâm saying is that just about nothing has been all, i donât know, rainbows and butterflies like you think,â your voice is practically scathing, a tone so rare to both of your brothers that neither knows what to say, âand you know what, sam? itâs looking to me like iâd be a lot better off if youâd just decided to tell me the goddamn truth.â
sam says your name, tentative like heâs testing hot waters, âi thought you said things were going well. you said you liked school, that you were making friends there? just explain to me what you mean so we can figure this out.â
âfigure it out,â you repeat under your breath, sticking your tongue against the inside of your cheek to keep from saying something too harsh. âsam, things were going well! they were!â now youâre feeling desperate to make him understand, âbut that night you told me there was nothing else we could do, nothing else to try and that i should just do my best to move on? i couldnât, sam, i couldnât do that. there had to be something more we could do, so i gave up on the things you said you did and i went further. i let you think i was fine, that i was doing what you wanted for me because you always sounded so tired. you always sounded like one more thing on your plate would make the sweet little life you built with a girl and a dog come crashing down, so i made sure you wouldnât have to worry about me.â
deanâs voice is uncharacteristically soft when he does his best to make his interruption gentle. he doesnât want to upset you more, but you can hear the tension in his voice when he asks, âkiddo? what do you mean by you âwent further?ââ
suddenly you shrink in on yourself, your lower lip caught between your teeth and your eyes shining with fresh tears. âdeanâ,â your voice breaks before you can even say anything else. his hand is on your back, meant to be comforting, but it only makes you feel worse about it all. you know how much dean would hate the lengths you went to to try and get him back. âi canâtââ you shake your head, âi canât right now, but maybe⌠maybe if youâd told me the truth, sam, if iâd just started by reading through all of bobbyâs books like you said you did, things would have worked out differently.â
âwell, maybe if you told me you were going to keep trying, i could have helped you!â sam fires back.
you let out a strangled, frustrated noise as you stand, unable to keep sitting down. âwould you? really? because i really donât think you wouldâve! you were so focused on moving on from losing dean that you distanced yourself from me, too! you barely picked up, never called, only talked about dean in three word sentences to tell me a lie about how you tried and failed to find anything to help! maybe if you paid any attention to me, gave any indication that you wanted to help or see me or be a major part of life like i wanted of you, i would have opened up to you!â it makes you even more angry when your voice turns teary, âand for once, i wanted to try to be the one to take care of you two. i kept my secrets, i never let on how fucking lonely i was, just so you wouldnât worry about me!â a stunned silence falls over you brothers, samâs guilt beginning to overrun his natural response of anger, and dean making up for that fading anger with his own. your chest heaves with laboured breath as you stare sam down.
deanâs tone is icy as he breaks the silence, âsam, is that really how you treated them while i was gone?âÂ
sam exhales hard, ignoring dean in favor of looking at you, âi was just doing what i thought was the best for both of us. i didnât know, okay, iâm sorry.â
âare you kidding me?â you exclaim, voice turning shrill and growing louder by the second, âpeople got hurt, on my account,â you have to force that part out through gritted teeth, âi got kicked out of school, and i spent three months running from hunters!â both sam and dean want to interrupt at that, but you keep going, your voice quieter now, but harsh and trembling, âbut you were doing what you thought was best for both of us? try what was best for you. dean was gone, and i needed you, sammy, i needed you and the second you said you needed to get away, alone, i knew i didnât have you.â
that shuts him up, has him deflating and his guilt taking over, and you can see it and you hate it. you almost wish heâd get angry instead because that means you can keep shouting at him to try and make him understand. but all you get are his clenched jaw, his sad eyes, and his guilty silence that tell you he knows he fucked up but he canât figure out a way to make it better since sorry sure as hell wonât cut it.
itâs dean who cuts into the heavy silence again. âsam.â his name hangs in the air, weighed down with unspoken words. âweâll talk about this later,â you guess is the message. you can feel how angry dean is without even looking at him. you know all he ever asked of sam if he was gone was to take care of you, and now dean knows he didnât. then his attention is back on you. he says your name, clear and careful. âiâm gonna need you to tell me what you did, okay?â
you wipe at your face angrily as you whirl to face dean. trying to keep the ever present tears at bay, you tap right back into your anger. but it's more tired this time, less convincing with your voice taut from unshed tears begging to be released.
âall that, and thatâs what you take away from this? really, dean? youâre gonna need to know what i did? i donât need you to tell me to know thatâ that it was wrong and i donât need you to make me feel any more shitty than i already do right now, okay?â
itâs his turn to wear a look of guilt on his face, but it only sits there for a flash before he keeps going. âkid, thatâs not what iâm trynaâ do here, alright? i just wanna understand so i can keep us safe, yeah?â he puts his hands out in a peaceful motion, but something else unresolved floats back up into your focus.
âno. dean, no! because thereâs something else here, something both of you have been avoiding this entire time!â thereâs a sudden change in the air, like both of them are holding their breath, silently begging you wonât ask the question. âdean, how long have you been back?â
his hesitancy to answer tells you everything. âkid, listen, thatâs not impââ
âdonât you dare say itâs not important! did you hear anything i just said, dean? anything about how shit my life has been since youâve been gone, how lonely iâve been?â
âyouâre right,â sam relents, forging on before dean can stop him, âheâs been back for three months now. itâs my fault we didnât tell you. itâs all my fault, and believe me, i am so sorry.â you collapse into a chair with your head in your hands as he continues, âi know that does nothing to fix things, but i am sorry, and i promise i will spend the rest of my life trying to make it up to you, kiddo. iâm all in now, and i did it all so this wouldnât have to be your life, but youâre here now and we want more than anything to have you around, okay?âÂ
you lift your head up to stare at him. âthree months.â your voice is dangerously quiet. âyou twoâŚâ your tired mind canât think of words strong enough, âdrive me insane, you know that? dean, you justâ you just went along with that and decided, let me guess, that it was best for me? because i was at school, living a normal life and away from the danger of this one? is that it? itâs best for me not to know my brotherâs alive? because, you know, that reminds me of something. hm, maybe the time sam hid from us that he was alive for a year because he didnât have his fucking soul? oh, yeah, it must be that.â you let out a short bark of laughter, but it and your voice are completely devoid of any humor. dean visibly recoils when you mention that. heâs thought of it, and still decided to keep you in the dark. âcome on, dean, you know how that feels and you go and do it to me again? really?â
youâve beat him too. âhoney,â he sighs, âiâm sorry. we were wrong to do that to you, okay?â
finally, you think you might be out of things to say, to be hurt about. your voice is quiet and fragile now, and the dam holding back your tears is fractured in a million places, more than ready to break. âi missed you so much. both of you,â you whisper. you meant to make a scathing comment about how âsorryâ and âwe were wrongâ donât even begin to cover it, but you find that youâre not in complete control of the things coming out of your mouth. youâre just too goddamn tired. dean is crouching in front of you in an instant.
âi missed you, too, sweetheart. so much. iâm so sorry.â he takes it as a good sign that you let him place his hand on your knee. you want to flick it away, maybe shove him away too.
âand i was so, so lonely. i was so scared,â you sob out, wishing you didnât have to cry when you got angry. âand iâm so mad that you two did this to me.â
âi know, kiddo, i know. iâm sorry.â gently, slowly, he tugs you towards him and into his arms and you slide onto the floor and cry into his chest, shaking and unable to say a thing. you want to tell him this doesnât make it right, but dean hushes you gently when you try. âshhh, itâs okay, just let it out, alright? i got you. i got you,â he comforts. itâs true that this doesnât make it right, but itâs almost all you need in that moment.
âsammy,â you choke out, still so angry with him, but wanting him near anyways, knowing that heâs too scared to come close to you after coming face to face with all of the things he did wrong. his hand is on your back a moment later, hesitant at first, then strong and soothing moments later when you blindly grab for the fabric of his flannel to keep him close.
âokay. okay, iâm here. iâm sorry. iâm here now, i promise,â he whispers, silently letting a few of his own guilty tears fall.
utterly exhausted, you stay slumped on the floor in dean's arms when your tears dry up. you can barely keep your eyes open and your breathing is soft and slow.Â
âletâs get you to bed,â dean whispers, hoisting you all the way into his arms and up as he stands. âsamâll grab you a glass of water.â you sigh an imperceptible sigh because you know that dean is still pissed at sam. rightfully so, youâre more than just pissed at both of them, but youâre too tired to care in this moment, and the last thing you want is for them to be angry at each other. thatâs your job for when you wake up hours from now.Â
dean sets you down in a foreign bed pulling the blankets over you, and sam is back moments later with the promised glass of water and tissues for your face. you curl up and tug at the covers slightly, eager to fall asleep.
âsee you in the morning,â you mumble, effectively dismissing them with your voice hoarse from crying. you close your eyes before either of them can say a thing, but your words are also a whisper of the beginning of forgiveness.Â
âgoodnight, kiddo,â dean says, his voice full of a familiar affection that he only uses for his little siblings as he presses a kiss to your hairline, before disappearing out the door.
you drowsily register the sound of sam setting the glass of water on the night stand by your head. âiâm right across the hallway if you need anything.â a moment, then, âgoodnight,â and a gentle hand on the side of your head before a kiss to your temple.
you fall asleep coming up with a list of petty ways youâll have them make things up to you. neither sam nor dean will be pleased to hear that youâre calling shotgun in the impala for the next three months, minimum. sam for obvious reasons, and dean because heâll know that means youâll be taking your job as youngest sibling to annoy the living hell out of him very seriously.

-
Years later, after a long engagement and an intimate backyard wedding, flight school and master's programs, TOPGUN (the first time,) and a handful of deployments and moves, Bob and Y/N Floyd now lived in a cottage-style home not far from the beaches of North Island. Well, they did for the past few months, since Bob got his call back to TOPGUN. Y/N didn't mind, she knew what she was signing up for when she married a Navy man, she only missed Bob now more than ever. She occupied her time by walking their dog, visiting her Dad who lived only a ten minute drive away, and rewatching her favorite TV show while she waited for Bob to come home at night. This mission had been different from the others, not that Bob nor her Dad could tell her much, the details had been fairly secretive. Y/N only knew that Bob left early in the morning, almost always before the sun, pushing his glasses up his nose and kissing her forehead. He'd return home after the sun had set, reeking of jet fuel and sweat. He'd be exhausted and dirty, but he'd make sure to take his sleeping wife from the couch to their shared bed before going to shower the day off of him. He'd be gone by the time she woke every morning, but there was always a post-it on her coffee mug in his scratchy handwriting:
Love you, miss you, mean it.
Y/N knew about his new teammates, the cocky Hangman, the kind and charming Rooster, the pranking, jokester duo of Payback and Fanboy, the smooth talking Coyote, and of course the infamous Maverick, who she knew better as Uncle Mav. Maverick had been in and out of her house throughout her whole life, which Bob was somewhat shocked and also unsurprised to know. She knew every time he was about to go into the air, accompanied by his new partner, Phoenix, who he talked about most of all. Y/N would hear her phone ding with a message, checking it quickly to see Bob's name flash across the screen.
In the air with Phoe, love you, miss you, mean it. x
The phrase that had started as an inside joke had slowly become a term of love that she looked forward to every day. It gave her something to look forward to, a sign that he was okay, that at least for a brief moment in time, he was okay.
After a week or so into his new training, Y/N began to notice some differences in her husband. He was still mostly himself-quiet but talkative in her presence, talking about his day with an upbeat attitude, but any mention of their present mission would send the corners of his smile downward a bit. Y/N didn't fully understand why, but with the amount of talented pilots and WSO's on this mission, she knew it was a dangerous one.
Several days later, Y/N woke up feeling...out of place. She had woken earlier than normal, considering how late she had stayed up waiting for Bob to get home. She felt uneasy, but blamed it on her lack of sleep. She continued her routine like normal-coffee, breakfast, walking the dog, starting the laundry-but every time she started a new task her mind began to wander. She knew she was likely overreacting, her mind playing tricks on her. When she came in from her walk, she immediately checked her phone, her thoughts taking over. She breathed a sigh of relief, there were no terrible messages or missed calls, only random notifications from her installed apps. Y/N still feels shaky for reasons she can't explain, so she reaches for the one person she always calls when she feels this way. It rings for a few seconds before the call picks up and her father's voice fills her ears.
"Hey, pumpkin! What's going on?"
Y/N sighs, biting her lip.
"Hey, Dad, sorry to bother you at work, I just, I've got a bad feeling I can't shake...I-I don't know what's wrong with me."
"Hey, hey, none of that. Nothing's wrong with you," her father's voice was calm and comforting. "Remember what we do when you have thoughts like this?"
Y/N was about to respond when her phone beeped with another incoming phone call from an unidentified number. Y/N's eyebrows furrowed, she recognized the local area code.
"Dad, let me call you back, I'm getting a call."
Her father signed off quickly, and Y/N's heart hammered as she answered the other number.
"Hello?"
"Hi, is this Y/N Floyd?"
"Um, yes, this is she. May I ask who's calling?"
"Mrs. Floyd, this is the Naval Medical Center of San Diego. You've been listed as the emergency contact of Lt. Robert Floyd-"
Y/N's ears seemed to flood with water, unable to hear anything the nurse on the other line was saying as she sank onto the nearby chair, forcing her brain to tune into the words coming through the speaker.
"He is in stable condition, he is alert with no serious injuries. We would just like to keep him overnight for further observation."
"O-Okay, um, thank you. Am I allowed to see him?"
"Of course, he's in room 431, just visit the desk before to get a visitor's pass."
"Thank you."
Y/N hung up the phone and collapsed against the back of the sofa, her chest heavy and eyes overwhelming with tears. Her phone beeps, reminding her that her father was still on hold. She takes a deep breath, wiping away her flurry of tears before pressing the button and rising form the couch, in search of her keys.
"Hey, everything alright?" Her dad's soft voice entered her ears.
"Uh, no, no," She couldn't keep her resolve, her tough facade faltering quickly. She knew that Bob was fine, that he hadn't been hurt, but the phone call had terrified her. "Bobby and his partner had to emergency eject, he's at the hospital. I-the nurse said he was fine, but it scared the shit out of me, Dad."
She pulled her keys from the bowl by the door, all but racing towards her car as her father tried to calm her, reassuring her everything was fine.
-
Bob leans back against the pillow on the hospital bed, his few scratches and cuts already bandaged. Phoenix had been the same, the dark haired pilot now sitting in a chair next to her backseater's bedside.
"My wife is gonna kill me," Bob's quiet voice finally broke the silence, his eyes toward the ceiling.
Phoenix wasn't an idiot-she knew that her partner had a wife. Bob was quiet, private, especially with the other members of the squad, but Phoenix was incredibly observant. She noted the gold band on the chain around his neck under his flight suit, and the Polaroid picture of him and a girl tucked into his chest he glanced at from time to time. She'd never press him to talk about it, but she noticed.
"Doubt it," came her reply. "She's probably freaking out though. Not a common occurrence that your loved ones have to eject a fighter jet."
Bob's eyebrows raised, "When your father is the Commander of the US Pacific Fleet, you get used to it."
Phoenix's eyes widened, her jaw dropping. "Holy shit, Floyd! You married an Admiral's daughter?! Iceman's daughter, no less! I never would have thought that. Innocent little Bob, with an Admiral's daughter."
Bob chuckles lightly, sitting up with a slight groan. Footsteps sounded behind them, Y/N appearing before both of them. She had been crying, Bob noted quickly, her clothes disheveled as if she had simply ran out of the house.
"Baby," Bob's voice came, Y/N saying nothing as she approached him, doing nothing but wrapping her arms around his torso, her head tucked into the crook of his neck. She nearly cried at his familiar touch, his familiar smell-jet fuel, sweat, the lingering scent of his cologne. Any other time, she would've pushed him off lightly, telling him he needed a shower, but now, she wouldn't have cared if he smelled like rotting food. Bob's muscular arms held her tight, kissing the top of her head.
"Robert Floyd, you scared the living shit out of me. Never do that again."
He knew his wife's words were in jest, she had been shaken by the news of his ejection, but was thankful he was okay. The couple broke apart, Y/N's hands pushing Bob's hair that had fallen in his face, his hands on either side of her hips. Y/N turned to the girl in the chair, her face clouding over with embarrassment.
"I am so sorry, I completely barged in without even speaking. You must be Phoenix. I've heard so much about you, it's so great to meet you. I'm Y/N."
Phoenix smiles, "Natasha, itâs great to meet you too. Although I canât say the same, Bob here keeps all intel about you on pretty tight lock. Donât blame him though, the others would probably give him hell for snagging an Admiralâs daughter.â
Y/N blushes but laughs heartedly at Phoenixâs jab, the two quickly falling into a conversation with one another. Bob sits back and watches, his thumb rubbing his wifeâs diamond ring and wedding band where their hands intertwined. As he watched the two women bond, he began to think of the rest of his found family. He wanted to introduce Y/N to the other Daggers, for his favorite people to finally all know one another.
-
The perfect opportunity presented itself in the form of the Daggersâ recognition ceremony after their successful mission. All of the Daggers and their respective families would be present, and of course, Ice would be there as well, as long as numerous other Navy personnel.
Under the summer sun of North Island, each of the Daggers sported their dress whites, their families in chairs in the crowd. Bob sat next to Phoenix, the pair exchanging knowing glances when people they knew arrived, or when certain family members arrived in a sort of over-the-top fashion. Phoenix had nudged him harshly with her elbow when Y/N arrived, dazzling in her sundress, sunglasses over her eyes as her arm was interlaced with her fatherâs.
âSince when was Ice Spice married?â Roosterâs voice sounded amongst the small crowd the Daggers had formed. âI swear I saw rings on her left hand. I mean I havenât actually seen her since we were like sixteen, but I didnât know she got married.â
âIce Spice? The hell are you talking about, Bradshaw?â Hangmanâs southern accent responded, eyes squinting as he looked into the crowd. âYou mean Admiral Kazanskyâs daughter? âIce Spiceâ whereâd that come from?â
âIt was her nickname, we grew up around the same people, most of the kids nicknames were extensions of their Dadâs call signs. Baby Goose,â he gestured to himself. âIce Spice.â He gestured to Y/N. âI didnât even know she had a boyfriend though, God Iâm out of the loop.â
Bob couldnât help but grin to himself, almost glad heâd not told anyone other than Phoenix, whose brown eyes were piercing the side of his head, as if to say âare you gonna say something?!â
âSheâs gotta be married to someone here, though, right?â Coyoteâs voice sounded. âNot like sheâs coming to all her Dadâs events for shits and giggles. My moneyâs on someone higher up, some other Admiral or something.â
Fanboy scoffs, âWho? Cyclone?â His voice is laced with sarcasm.
âNo fucking way,â came Paybackâs reply. âSheâs way too good looking for someone like him. Way too young too, heâs ancient next to her.â
All Dagger eyes were locked on Y/N from across the pavilion, her smile wide as she spoke with another Admiralâs wife Bob couldnât quite remember the name of.
âIâm gonna go with Javyâs theory. Nobody under Ice would be man enough to try to date his daughter. Iâm a cocky son of a bitch, but one look from Iceman makes sweat roll down my back.â Hangmanâs response was honest.
âHeâs not so bad,â Bradley spoke. âBut youâre not wrong, heâs one hell of an intimidating man. Youâd have to have balls of steel to approach him about dating his daughter, especially if youâre under him.â
Bob smirked, remembering just how nervous he had been on Tom Kazanskyâs front door at seventeen years old.
âWhat about you two? Where are you placing your bets?â Mickey looked over at Bob and Natasha.
Phoenixâs smile widens into a sly grin, the one she gets when she proves Rooster wrong, or gets one over on Hangman in the air.
âGirl like her-gorgeous, high-ranking father, everyone seems to love her. My guess is on someone youâd never expect, someone out of left field.â
Hangman nods, contemplating. âWhat about you Baby on Board?â
Bobâs eyes widen beneath his glasses as he scrambles for a thought. He looks over at his wingman, Phoenix giving him a look that undoubtably means to play along with it.
âUh, I gotta go with Natâs theory.â
âCourse you do,â Coyote jokes. âSo $100 on the bets, winning team take all?â
The Daggers agree unanimously, Phoenixâs grin almost slimy with satisfaction.
âFloyd,â a slap on Bobâs shoulder jolts him into sitting straight before turning to look at where the voice came from. âGood to see you, man. Havenât seen you and the missus around much lately.â
âAdmiral Jones, good to see you,â Bob shakes the older manâs hand with a firm grip. âTheyâve been keeping me busy. I think weâre coming to the barbecue Sunday, you and Mrs. Jones enjoy Boston? How were the grandkids?â
The Daggers watch intently as the most reserved member of their group chats animatedly with an Admiral that theyâd only seen in passing, Phoenix stifling a chuckle at the secret only she seems to know. The Admiral walks away after a moment, and Bob turns back to the group, who all look at him as if waiting for an explanation.
âNeighbor,â came Bobâs short reply.
âMissus?â Roosterâs voice speaks, his whiskey colored eyes shooting down to Bobâs hands, his wedding band glimmering in the sun. âIâve never seen you with that.â
âOh, no, probably not,â Bob starts. âWear it on my dog tags when weâre in the air.â
âBobâs married, and weâre all bachelors? Never saw that coming.â Hangmanâs voice pipes up.
âItâs always the quiet ones,â Paybackâs retort is the last chuckle as the ceremony begins.
Admiral Kazansky opens the ceremony, introducing Maverick and the other members respectively, honoring them and finishing out the ceremony as quickly as professional. As the service ends, the Daggers distribute but keep close quarters, looking to see who the Kazansky girl ends up running to. Meanwhile, Phoenix watches as Bob interacts with nearly every member of high-ranking in attendance. He goes from bumbling, awkward Bob, to some other version of himself that makes dad jokes and has a firm handshake.
âWell Phoe,â Rooster speaks as he sits down in the chair next to her. âThe only person Iâve seen her hug is Mav, and I know itâs not him. Should I just ask her myself?â
Phoenix face breaks out into a full blown smile as she watches Y/N make a quick sprint through the crowd of Navy uniforms to get to her husband, her arms thrown around his neck as her smile could blind.
âWonât be necessary, Roo. I think the mystery has been solved, and Iâm about to be $300 richer.â
Roosterâs eyes cut to his childhood friend embracing his teammate, Bobâs hands resting respectively on her waist, his blue eyes locked on his wife.
âHoly shit. Bob? And Ice Spice? Jesus-you-â he turns to face Natasha. âYou knew!â
âTheyâre high school sweethearts. Got married right after he finished the Academy, been together ever since. Live in one of those cute cottage houses by Pennyâs, got a Corgi named Solo. Frequent guests at most Navy personnel barbecues, birthdays, weddings-it was Bobâs story, didnât seem right for me to tell.â
Rooster sighs, standing to tell Coyote who stood talking with his sister. Javyâs eyes widen, looking over at the couple who is now talking to another Admiral and his wife, Y/Nâs laugh fading into the crowd of voices. Javy nudges Jake talking beside him, Jakeâs cocky grin fading as Mickey and Rueben have both already noticed. Their looks of shock fade momentarily as Bob pulls Y/N towards their direction, a smile plastered onto his face. Y/Nâs smile is bright, her arm intertwined with her husbands, her pastel purple dress blowing in the sea breeze.
âFloyd! Got somethinâ youâd like to tell us?â Hangmanâs shit-eating grin faced Bob.
Bob letâs out a chuckle. âY/N, meet the one and only Hangman.â
Y/N smiles, nodding, âPleasure to meet you, Lieutenant Seresin.â
âThe pleasure is all mine,â Hangman gives Bob a wink as Bob flips him off in response.
âIgnore him, baby.â Bobâs voice is full of good-natured humor, used to the teasing. âThe tall one is Coyote, next to him is Payback, Fanboy, of course you know Phoe, and R-â
âBradley Bradshaw,â his wifeâs voice speaks. âHow long has it been?â
She approaches Rooster with her arms wide open, Bradley reciprocating her hug.
âToo long, Ice Spice. Howâd a nice girl like you end up with our Bob here?â
Y/Nâs eyes furrow, her smile never faltering. âUm, when Dad and I moved, Bobby and I went to the same high school, been together ever since, high school sweethearts.â Her eyes sparkled as they met Bobâs sapphire ones, her arm going back around his arm. âWhat can I say? Heâs a charmer.â
The Daggers hovered for nearly an hour, all taking turns swapping stories with Bob and his wife, getting to know one another. They mostly told stories to embarrass Bob, jabbing at him and his âballs of steelâ for not only dating, but marrying an Admiralâs daughter. Commending him on his royal stupidity for hiding his wife from them, all commenting that she was infinitely cooler than Bob himself. Bob took them all in stride, giving Y/N a kiss to her head before Phoenix began chatting with his wife. Standing in the center of the big group of people he considered family, his wife on his arm, charming them all, his heart swelled in his chest, warmness blooming, the same warmth he had felt when he spent time in the Kazansky house-true familial love, understanding someone without having to say a word.
As the Daggers split off one by one, leaving only Bob and Y/N, he pulled her close, hand on her waist, the setting sun and light breeze a picturesque backdrop for their night.
âHey, Floyd?â His wifeâs sweet voice reached his ears.
âYeah, Floyd?â He chuckled back, pulling her in closer, leaving a kiss on her temple.
âWe should have a celebration of your successful mission. A real one, not a formal one like this. We could invite everyone, all the Daggers, and their families. We haven't had Nat around at the house yet, and Dad would love it, would give him and Uncle Mav more time to conjure up how to terrorize the Navy even further.â
Bob nods, âI like that idea. Sounds good, Iâll text the group, see what weekend works best." His voice turns serious. "Thank you, baby, youâve always been my biggest supporter, feel like I donât tell you that enough.â
His wife is quiet for a moment, her focus on her shoes walking on the ground. She looks up at him, her expression serious.
âIâm proud to call you my husband. Always have been, but just thought I should remind you. And as much as Iâve missed you through this special training, itâs nice to see you have other people who take care of you, appreciate you like I do.â Sheâs quiet before she starts again. âAll that to say, love you, missed you, mean it.â
Bob laughs loudly into the air, stopping to pull his wife into a proper kiss, one a tad more inappropriate than the chaste ones heâd given her after the ceremony. The two finally break after a need for air arises, their pupils blown wide as they stare at one another.
âHow long do you think we have until your Dad notices weâre not at his place for dinner?â Bobâs voice is deeper, sultry.
âLong enough,â his wife replies. Bob smiles and picks her up into his arms bridal style, her laughter boisterous as he races her back to his trusty pick-up truck parked close by, his chest so full of love for her he simply canât contain his wide grin filling his face.
As he starts the truck and peels out of the parking lot, he looks over at his wife, her curled hair blowing in the wind from the rolled down window, her pastel purple dress highlighting her best features. Heâs hit with a wave of nostalgia, a younger version of his wife in this same truck-her hair a bit longer, her eyes still wide with new love, a purple corsage on the same hand where a wedding band now sits.
âWhat?â She giggles, noticing his stare on her as theyâre stopped at a red light.
âYouâre beautiful.â She blushes pink, just like she had at the bottom of her childhood homeâs staircase, the night Bobby had uttered those words through a shaking voice.
He thinks of seventeen-year-old Bobby, the version of himself who had said those words for the first time, more in love with Y/N now than he was then. If only seventeen-year-old Bobby could see him now, maybe he wouldnât have been shaking with nerves, sweating through his rented tux. Bob smiles to himself as Y/N leans to turn the radio up, a folk song they both love.
He shakes his head, maybe itâs best his younger version didnât know the outcome. The nerves were good, healthy. Even shaking, stammering teenage Bobby had more nerve than he thought. After all, he was there to pick up an Admiralâs daughter.

đ˛đ¨đŽđŤđŹ đđ¨đŤđđŻđđŤ đ˘đ§ đđđ 19. attention seeker
welcome to the second act. warnings for this chapter include depictions of alcoholism and family issues
'BEING AN INFLUENCER WAS A REAL JOB THAT REQUIRED A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF WORK.'
Yeah, right.
Shin Yuna heard phrases along those lines all the time. Whenever she watched other people's content, a good majority of the influencers would rant about how difficult their life was, or how stressful their workload was when it came to recording and editing.
Sure, it took some effort to edit and upload new content. Yuna allocated several hours a week to do so, but all she had to do was set up a livestream for the cash to start rolling in. Wear something skimpy. Bat her lashes at the camera. Pout a little. Play up the damsel in distress act. It was simply too easy.
princessval***: omg girl pls stop drinking đ onlyyuna03: she's so messy i love her luvyuna***: you're back already? i thought you were taking a break onlyyuna03: @luvyuna*** you must be new LOL she always does this
But thisâthe flood of comments that poisoned her screenâwas the curse of putting herself on the internet.
It wasn't like this during her first year of streaming. Back in high school, Yuna's parents were fighting every day, and since she didn't have any friends to talk to, she turned to the internet. She would stay up all night in random Discord servers, chatting with strangers and confiding in them about her family issues.
Naturally, these chats turned into voice calls, which later turned into video calls. Initiated by her, of course. No one else had their cameras on, though; Yuna quickly grew comfortable being in the spotlight, basking in the glow of praise from strangers. Comments like 'you're so gorgeous' and 'you should be a model' made her forget all about her family issues for a split second. Like that, it became like a drug for her.
Yuna, who was starved of attention, relished in the validation she got from online strangers. Strangers who wouldn't even share any personal information about themselves, going by fake names and hiding how old they were.
Soon after, she made her own Discord server, inviting everyone who wanted to see her get in front of her camera and talk about her day. She knew how to play her angles well, acting as if she was everyone's girlfriend while using them to satisfy her need for attention. It was a classic marketing strategy: Yuna knew her asset was her beauty, so she used it to her advantage.
All she had to do was send a picture of herself or talk in a cute voice, and everyone would fawn over her in seconds. In a life where Yuna's own parents neglected her, she found people who cared. Maybe their intentions weren't in the right place, but they were present and ready to listen to whatever she had to say.
She got ambitious, deciding to start live-streaming to a wider audience. Yuna started on Twitch, playing various games like Overwatch and League of Legends. She didn't have to be very good as long as people liked her face and stayed for her reactions.
As she grew a following, she moved to YouTube and TikTok, doubling her follower count in only months. Before, she would be talking to an audience of around 20 people, but now she was racking in thousands as soon as she went live.
Of course, there came drama, too. And Yuna found it exhilarating.
If someone called her out on something, all she had to do was come up with some sob story about how she didn't deserve to hear that, and everyone would come with pitchforks to defend her. She was very calculative in that way, knowing exactly when and how to turn the tide if it wasn't in her favor.
For some reason, that never seemed to work with her parents.
"You're a disappointment," her father spat at her the day she showed him her Yale acceptance letter. She had sparkles in her eyes and a bright smile all day, only for her to feel completely crushed. She couldn't understand why; it was her father's dream for her to get into Yale, after all. "This is the only acceptance letter you've got, huh?"
Yuna hesitated. The competition for all of the Ivy League schools was rough this year; she had been getting rejections left and right, but she thought her family would be satisfied with Yale. After all, it was her father's alma mater.
"Yeah," she answered in a small voice. She looked down at her acrylic-damaged nails, neglected from years of biting the skin until they bled. "I thought you'd be happy with Yale."
"Happy?" Mr. Shin barked out a laugh. "You didn't actually get into Yale on your own, you know that, right?" He scoffed when Yuna gave him a confused look. Then, Mr. Shin slammed his phone against the dinner table, causing his wife and daughter to flinch. "Five hundred thousand. I paid five hundred thousand to get you in. Mr. Nakamura only paid two to get Kazuha in, but I had to pay five. That's how useless you are."
"Sunoo? You know my old boss's son?" he would provoke her for the rest of dinner. "He got in all by himself. You know Hyejin's sonâAntonâhe got into Yale and Brown on his own, too."
"You need to work hard, Yuna," Mrs. Shin said before stabbing at her salad. "Your dad could only get you in as an undeclared major. You need to get into pre-med on your own."
Tears prickled her eyes, but she stayed silent. Even her college acceptance was a fraud; she had done nothing out of her own hard work.
Except her skyrocketing career as an influencer.
The high of her fame only lasted a short while, though. During the summer before her freshman year of college, Yuna's parents discovered what she had been getting up to on the internet.
Shameful, they called it, as if Yuna was committing a crime.
Yuna's parents were surgeons, and rather good ones at that. They both got their undergraduate degrees at Stanford, and then their doctorates at Harvard. The two of them became neurosurgeons after their residency and board exams, and then transferred to Mercy Health where Mr. Shin became the Chair of Neurological Surgery, which set the bar a little high for Yuna.
She was never spectacular. She was always more interested in makeup and clothes instead of science and medicine. Yuna would've rather worked toward a career as a fashion designer, often dreaming about fashion shows she could design for. She knew she would make it far, tooâeven Donatella Versace told her backstage during Paris Fashion Week that she had an eye for fashion, and that she could go far.
The few times she visited your house, she remembered meeting your mom, a well-known fashion designer herself, and showing off her sketches. Yuna distinctly recalled her words of approval, and she had to bite her tongue whenever your mom would offer to take Yuna on a tour of her studio, only for her parents to turn down the offer.
Her parents were so adamant about Yuna following their path to becoming a surgeon that they threw away all of her sketchbooks and colored pencils when she showed them her work. Even when she got the opportunity of a lifetime to be taken under Vivienne Westwood's wing, her parents crushed her dreams under their heels.
From a young age, she knew that hard work was only determined by her parents. Her true efforts were simply considered a waste of time.
Naturally, Yuna let out all her emotions when she live-streamed. It just so happened that her parents found out through the families of people who knew her. First, she would be grounded. When that wouldn't work, she would get all of her devices taken away. When she found a loophole around that, she would have to endure her father's rage.
Halfway through her first year at Yale, her parents disowned her.
She was on academic probation after her first semester. While she was trying to file a restraining order against someone who was stalking her (who claimed to be a fan), her grades managed to slip until she failed most of her classes. The worst part was, she had been expecting her parents to worry about the stalking incident, but they only cared about her GPA. Casting Yuna away was just protecting the Shin family's shiny status.
Everything was gone. Yuna was no longer part of the world you and Sunoo lived in. All her connections to the medical field, all her connections to the fashion industryâall out of her grasp. Still, maybe it was her flickering hope to somehow please her parents that kept her on the path to become a doctor. Not that it something she was genuinely interested in, but she knew it was the only way her parents would take her back.
Now she had to keep up her influencer career to support herself financially. There was no way she would be able to pay off tuition, even if Sunoo had generously paid the deposit for her small apartment. She had to keep up with bills, rent, and utilities all at once, and it was all too much for an eighteen-year-old to handle.
She got used to accepting help because of that. You helped foot some of her bills, Sunoo helped with tuition, Anton helped make sure she was eating, and the money she got from streaming and posting videos was enough to cover the rest of her expenses.
Even with an outlet to express her concerns to her fans, though, Yuna was struggling with barely making friends. You, Sunoo, and Anton were the only ones who lent a shoulder and an ear for her to dump all her pain and worries to. But she still had to hold them at arm's length. After all, all of their upper-crust families were in close contact with each other.
And then there was Lee Heeseung.
He was a new face in the socialite scene. No one had heard of him or his family before. Heeseung was probably Yuna's ideal typeâhandsome, intelligent, popular, and someone who hadn't been sucked into her world yet. Although he was alledgedly close to you and Park Sunghoon, no one else had any idea of what his family did.
Over the years, Yuna was terrified that she had built a reputation among the rich families that were in her circle. She could feel the disdain in their eyes when she was at social events, steering clear of every adult that looked as though they wanted to probe her for information about her college admissions.
Heeseung, however, was like a breath of fresh air. There was no judgment in his eyes when Yuna spoke to him, and that might have been the very moment she fell for him.
He was different. He didn't have any expectations of her nor did he feel uncomfortable when he found out she was a streamer. She liked that he came from a humble background, and he never judged her from where she came from. Even when Yuna confessed that she had been disowned, Heeseung never looked at her with pity in his eyes. He simply told her that he would be there if she ever needed him, and he left it at that.
She tried her best to get close to him, but the closer Yuna got, the more she saw under the surfaceâthe more she realized she was heading toward heartbreak. It was clear as day that Heeseung was deeply in love with you, and it seemed as though he had no intention of considering any other woman. Even Yuna could tell he would give up everything in a heartbeat for your sake.
Yuna did her best to avoid conversations about Heeseung with you. She figured that if they never brought him up, then you wouldn't start to feel differently about him.
To her relief, you started dating Park Sunghoon.
Yuna used Heeseung's vulnerability to her advantage. As much as she liked him, he was a coward when it came to his own feelings; Heeseung could only bring himself to come clean about how he felt for you after you started dating another man. Of course, he was turned downâignored, even. In your mind, you just wanted to keep up the fantasy of having a close childhood friend to the point where you had Heeseung bottle up everything he felt.
Yuna thought you were cruel back then, but she was even more so.
She knew that Heeseung couldn't do anything about his feelings no matter how much it ate at him, so Yuna pretended she wanted to listen to him go on and on about how miserable he was. It was all because of you, and, for a period of time, Yuna despised you for it.
Months rolled by, and Yuna found herself going over to Heeseung's dorm room nearly every day. They talked about anything and everything, and then the conversation would eventually shift to you. Yuna felt something chip at her heart every time he mentioned your name, but she braved through it all.
"Thanks for coming over," Heeseung murmured, running a hand through his already-messy hair. Yuna could smell the alcohol on his breath when she sat down next to him on the floor. Heeseung laughed. "One-month anniversary. Y/N always told me she found those stupid."
Yuna pressed her lips into a thin line. She remembered walking to class with you last week and hearing you gush about everything you bought Sunghoon for your one-month anniversary as a couple. She thought it was sweet back then, but hearing it come from Heeseung made Yuna feel sick.
"You don't have to thank me," she said, hugging her knees to her chest. "I just wanted to be here for you."
The first time she tried to kiss Heeseung was that night.
The first time Heeseung rejected her was right after he stopped her.
"I can't," he said at the time, drawing away from her. "I'm sorry, it's justâ"
"You're not over Y/N," she finished for him with a twinge of bitterness.
He shook his head, saying nothing. Yuna felt a surge of misdirected anger.
Yuna knew from the moment she met you that people like you were the shiny gold coins that everyone wanted to have, and people like her were rusted-over pennies on the sidewalk to be stepped on and forgotten. She was a fool to think that Heeseung would see past that.
"I know that." Her tone was sharp as she got to her feet, and Heeseung followed suit right after. "But I suggest you get over her soon because it's not gonna happen."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Exactly what I said. Y/N would never go out with you. She already turned you down, anyway."
"Is that so?"
When Yuna turned around to look at Heeseung, his expression was like stone. Something ugly was twisting its way around her heart, squeezing out every semblance of affection she ever had for you.
"Yeah," she replied with a simpering smile, "because she's just too nice to choose the guy who broke her friend's heart."
"Brokeâ?"
"And," she said louder, cutting him off, "Sunghoon doesn't know, does he? Wouldn't he feel really betrayed if he found out?"
Heeseung kept his face impassive, but Yuna could tell he was seething. She cornered him quite well.
She kept that farce up for years. It was easy keeping Heeseung in line when you only had eyes for Sunghoon, and Heeseung was just so easily discouraged by Yuna's words. It was almost like he had no hope that you would take his word over hers, and that sent Yuna on some sort of power trip.
Her relationship with you was strange. Maybe it was at that moment when she realized that she was someone important to you, and that made her feel invincible somehow. She could do anything as long as you were on her side.
She liked drinking. Not because she particularly liked the taste of alcohol, but she loved the feeling of forgetting all her responsibilities. Every rotten memory of her parents would bury itself under the sand for the time being, and all she could feel was adrenaline pumping through her blood.
But she was never exactly in control. It only took a year to slip up in front of her friend group (thankfully when you weren't around), so she begged Karina, Yeonjun, and Giselle to keep quiet about her crush on Heeseung. They weren't even extremely close at the time, but they knew better than to tread on a situation between you and Sunghoon, whose parents were far more influential than theirs.
"It's only gonna cause more problems if she finds out," Yuna told them through choked sobs. "If Y/N finds out, things will never be the same between us, and Sunghoon doesn't even know that Heeseung has feelings for Y/N." As Giselle stroked her hair gently, Yuna said, "I can get over him on my own. Just please keep this from Y/N."
Karina and Yeonjun exchanged nervous looks before they reluctantly agreed. She had always been wary about Karina. Giselle was overly-empathetic to her situation, Yeonjun was a good listener because he thrived off of drama, but Karina had always seemed more skeptical.
And, as Heeseung knew, Yuna always found a way to silence people who she felt she couldn't trust, so she played dumb when she outed Karina on live.
It was a stupid move on her part, to be fair. Yuna deeply regretted it as soon as she realized what she said. Karina iced her out for months, and everyone else was on the colder sideâeven Sunoo, who had been her close friend for so long. She always felt strangely jealous of Sunoo, who got the approval of her father when she couldn't, but seeing him give her the cold shoulder nearly sent her over the edge.
"I apologized so many times!" she cried to him. Sunoo kept his guard up, but he always heard her out when she needed him. "I just don't know what else to do. I keep fucking up."
Sunoo frowned. "Do you even feel bad about what you did, or do you feel bad because you were caught?"
Yuna didn't respond to his question, but she knew exactly what the answer was. Was she pathetic? Probably.
She ruined everything. She always ruined everything.
Maybe it was just easier that way. Yuna knew that if she tried her best to please everyone, it would still never be enough. Hurting them before she cared too much was just a defense mechanism, as selfish as it sounded. If you chopped down the tree before it grew too tall, it wouldn't hinder the plants under its shade from growing.
The thing was, Yuna received blow after blow all her life without any acts of mercy. She was struck over and over again, and no one delivered the final coup de grâce.
Naturally, Karina came around and forgave her. Another missed blow. It was like Yuna was drunk off the drama itself because if she kept acting out and causing all these problems, then she could keep everyone's attention on her.
And then she wouldn't have to be so alone.
But the cycle went on and on, so when Yuna found herself texting Jay and Sunghoon in her drunken stupor, she hardly considered the consequences when she mentioned the long-kept secret of Heeseung's first love. You trusted her to keep your conversation with Jay about breaking up with Sunghoon to herself, but she violated that as soon as she could, too. She wasn't sure what it was, but whenever she looked in the mirror, all she saw was that she was as bad as her parents.
Yuna was fated to fall into the same destructive cycle over and over again until it stabbed her in the back for good. Until she bled out, though, everything was fair game.

The Caged Bird Still Sings Part 12
Welcome to act 2. These are going to be a rough set of chapters for Steve. I hate to do it, but I've got to get him low, to have Eddie build him back up.
If you've been following along to WIP Wednesday, you'll know (or at least suspect) that I'm nearing the end of act 2 and the return of Eddie.
Then I'm not sure how much longer it's going to be. It could be a couple of chapters. But it might be several.
Here we have Jeff teasing Steve and Eddie. Steve decides to spend all his money on movies and popcorn, and at last a wild Birdie appears.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7Â Part 8Â Part 9Â Part 10Â Part 11
~
It took a month before Clint Harrington gave up on his crusade to chase his son out of town. That didnât make Steve safe, per se, just safer. But he took what little comfort in that that he could.
The kids were jealous of the Sunbird, Mike finally admitting that yes, some mysterious benefactor had come in and swept Steve off his feet. He was a kept man.
Steve squirmed at the term. He was going to start looking for work. Just as soon as the dust settled. There was no point in looking when Clint Harrington was just going to come in and throw his weight around get him fired again.
Mike just rolled his eyes when he explained it to the kids, but Max was of the idea to milk for as much as it was worth.
âSeriously, Steve,â Max huffed, âif I could live in a hotel and swim whenever I wanted and order as much food as I wanted, Iâd never want to leave.â
He scoffed. âThatâs because youâre like ten and actually have friends your age or did you all forget that my dad chased all my friends off?â
âOoh,â Lucas said clicking his tongue and shaking his head, âyeah, man. Thatâs rough. And it doesnât help that this place has one movie theater, an arcade, and a handful of specialty shops none of which scream fun times for teenagers.â
âYeah,â Will said from the couch, âJonathan has been complaining about it all summer. Thereâs Bloomington or Indy, but considering you donât know which direction your parents went, youâre pretty much stuck in Hell.â
Steve waved his hand at Will. âSee? Will gets it.â
So all the kids got their heads together will Claudia and Joyce and tried to plot out something for Steve to do so that he wouldnât have be staring at the same set of walls every day, no matter how gorgeous those walls happened to be.
Which is how Steve became cinaphile. He started just picking random movies to see at random times of the day during the week. His favorite time to go was Tuesday afternoons before the middle school got out. Not enough time for high school students to evade the place, but later than the moms taking their small children as a way to beat the summer heat.
It also allowed him to find new genres he liked and through all this Eddie stayed his constant phone companion. He loved listening to Steve talk about the plot and how hot the actors were. It was fun.
Steve was also starting to make friends with the rest of the band. He found out who the other person that picked up before thinking it was his phone that was ringing.
âHey, is Eddie around?â Steve had asked, calling the mobile phone.
âHe just stepped out for a minute but heâll be right back,â the person said. âIâm Jeff by the way, Iâm the one that picked up before.â
âOh hello!â Steve said in surprise. âYouâre the other guitarist, right?â
Jeff laughed. âYeah thatâs me. Thanks for not saying âthe black oneâ by the way.â
âHappens a lot?â he asked with a grimace.
âAll the time,â Jeff deadpanned. âAll the god damned time.â
âThat must be shitty,â Steve commiserated. âI guess itâs not quite the same as saying the blond one or the tall one.â
âYeaaaahhh, no,â Jeff said. âThe other two are neutral attributes while being black carries a certain disdain to it.â
âOne of the families I used to babysit before this all went to hell,â Steve said, âwas a black family and I didnât realize all the little shit they go through each day. All the snide remarks and sneering glances all the for the crime of existing in the grocery store.â
âYeah,â Jeff agreed. âOh wait, your lover boy is back. Hey Ed, itâs Steve.â
âLittle Canary!â Eddie said excitedly upon being given the phone. âJeff didnât spill any of my secrets did he?â
Steve heard Jeff laugh in the background. âI didnât know there were secrets he kept... Iâm going to have to pump him for information next time.â
âNo, no, no,â Eddie whined. âNot allowed! Shoo Jeffy. Mine! Shoo!â
âDonât worry, Eddie,â Steve giggled. âYou can tell all your secrets yourself the next time youâre in Hawkins.â
âYeah,â Eddie said softly. âI think Iâd like that very much.â
âYouâre just a gooey marshmallow, arenât you?â Steve said with a giggle. âA perfectly roasted marshmallow. Hard on the outside, but all melty and gooey on the inside. Sweet and sticky.â
Eddie burst out laughing. âYou really had me going there until the sticky part. Yeah, baby. Iâll be your marshmallow and youâll be my little Canary.â
âYeah, Eds,â Steve said, âIâd really like that.â
They talked for a little bit longer before Eddie hummed.
âSteve we have to talk about the last month of the tour,â he said seriously.
Steveâs blood froze in his veins. Eddie rarely called him âSteveâ. It was a petname like baby, sweetheart, or honey, or little Canary, or maybe even Stevie. But never Steve. âOh yeah? What about?â
âWeâre going to be in Canada,â Eddie continued. âIâll still be able to call, but only from hotel rooms. I donât get good service there.â
The ice in his veins turned to lead in his stomach. âSo while youâre on the road, you wonât be able to call me?â he asked, his voice small.
âOh, little Canary,â Eddie said sympathetically. âIâll try to call from payphones when we stop for gas, but yeah. Itâll be pretty sporadic. But Iâve gotten Chrissy to promise that sheâll take good care you.â
âShe still doesnât like, you know,â Steve said, âshe thinks Iâm distracting you from doing your job.â
âWhich is fucking ridiculous,â Eddie assured him. âI shake my ass on stage and sing and play my heart out. I never skimp on that, and never walk out one meet and greets with the fans. Itâs her job to worry, but itâs not your problem. Itâs mine. Plus I have my little elf in play who will be plying you with as many little bird gifts I can find.â
Steve couldnât help but smile at that. He had gotten in addition to the necklace that he only took off to shower, a couple of graphic t-shirts with canaries on them. A keychain as well as one with his name on it. Three little ceramic canaries and a glass one. All brought in by Eddieâs little elf.
âYeah, okay,â he huffed. âI canât wait to see what you come up with next.â
âWell, Iâve got to go, babe,â Eddie murmured, âIâll talk to later. The change wonât happen right away, but Iâll tell you when the date gets closer, okay?â
âRoger that,â Steve said with a sigh of relief. Then they hung up and he flopped on the sofa like a fainting Victorian maiden. In a couple of weeks, he would go back to being as lonely as fuck.
He didnât even know who the little elf was or why they never showed themselves. All though, knowing Eddie, it was probably just because he thought it was cute. Which it was. It was also a little on the creepy side. He had gotten to know the porters, bellboys, and cleaning staff very well, so he didnât mind them coming in while he was out or even in the shower.
But a mysterious person whom he knew nothing about? Yeah that was a problem. He didnât know if they were male or female, how old they were, were they friendly or just doing their job.
To say it drove Steve nuts would be an understatement.
It had been six weeks since his dad chucked him out for making out with Tommy on the sofa and all that time he hadnât seen hide nor hair of the bastard or any of their friends. It was just then his luck ran out.
He had accidentally spilled almost his whole bottle of shampoo and had to go and get more. He spoke briefly to Joyce and chatted with her about Will and how Jonathan was adjusting to being newly graduated and turned around to run directly into someone.
âShit!â Steve hissed as the basket he was carrying slammed into his stomach. âIâm sorry, I didnât see you there.â
He looked up, right into the green eyes and freckled face of Tommy Hagan.
âSteve!â
âHey, Tommy,â Steve said with a fake smile. âHow have you been?â The unasked question of âwhy did you leave me?â hung in the air between them.
Tommy reached up and rubbed the material of Steveâs shirt between his finger and thumb. âThatâs some pretty fancy new getup youâve got there. Where you get the money for such nice things?â
Steve took a step back and crossed his arms. âIâm surviving. Like I always do.â He hated how he was already put on the defensive.
âMhmm...â Tommy purred. âPretty little slut like you, I bet youâve got yourself a sugar daddy youâve spread your legs for.â
Dread immediately pooled in Steveâs stomach. That wasnât what Eddie was? Was he?
He smacked Tommyâs hand away. âJealous that someone is fucking me better than you ever could? Maybe I have someone paying my bills or maybe I just have a trust fund. Iâll never tell you jack shit.â
The thing was is that he probably did have a trust fund. He just wouldnât get it until he turned twenty-one. He had two years of running on empty he would have to do first. At least he had until Eddie came home anyway.
âNo,â Tommy agreed, âyou were always more of a screamer than a talker.â
Steve rolled his eyes and scoffed. âAt least I didnât run like a bitch when my parents walked in on us fucking. You find another dick to ride or did you go back to Carol like the coward you are?â
Tommy scowled. âYou keep her name out your dirty mouth, Stevie boy. You donât want to see what will happen if you donât.â
âYeah,â Steve said with a snort, âyouâll go running back to Daddy to protect you, like always do. Now pardon me, I have better things to do.â His eyes flicked over Tommyâs body. âIf you hadnât been the only option, I wouldnât have picked you.â
He pushed passed him, bumping their shoulders together as he did.
He quickly bought what he needed and about as much junk food as he could get hands on. Joyce looked as though she wanted to ask if he was okay, so picked a different line to go though, hurrying out to his car. He looked around to make sure Tommy wasnât waiting for him, but he didnât see his car.
He drove back to the hotel, ready for a junk food night in front of the TV. He ordered room service and turned on the shower to wash off the slimy feeling of the interaction with Tommy. He had removed his shirt when he realized he had left the shampoo out there.
He opened the door and stopped in his tracks. Because there putting a couple of boxes on the end table was a girl with choppy blonde hair and boxy clothes. She was definitely not staff.
âSo youâre my elf.â

( đ ) y/n things every atiny should know !
ââââ a list of things that every atiny ( or yn-inator ) should know about y/n or random headcanons that i think you all should know.
you're fluent in three langauges; english, japanese, and korean.
you think that if you didn't become an idol, you would have gone into game development.
after you left sm ent., you stayed at a boarding house with four other girls (mostly college age). you lived in the house up until a few months before kq fellaz was officially announced, and then you had moved into the dorm.
you were involved in several clubs during middle school and high school.
you went to an all-girls high school and was able to get in because of your high exam scores. you were also popular among your peers, often getting letters and small gifts.
you have a total of six tattoos, the most out of all the members who have some.
your parents and childhood friends use to call you a "disney princess" because of how many times you could get wild animals (mainly cats) to come to you, especially when they wouldn't go to others.
this cares into how you accidentally brought home a small fox, thinking it was just a weird cat. your parents made you take it back to where you found it.
you like to joke that the small fox returned to you in the form of wooyoung.
you are close friends with several sm artists, but especially close with nct's yuta who fans have spotted you hanging out with several times.
you also have a yuta picket that you got from an nct 127 concert and can still be seen in the background of your room during some lives.
you're a big fan of gravity falls and have even done a cover of "disco girl" a song from the show on a live (which is a parody song based off the abba song "dancing queen"). alex hirsch, the creator of gravity falls, even retweeted a clip of you singing onto his twitter account.
you've rewatched gravity falls at least 56 times. you like to watch it when on tour, but also like watching it with the members. the member that has rewatched it with you the most is mingi.
the boys often call you their "fix it girl" because you are often fixing things around the dorms.
you once did a livestream where atiny watched you replace a light fixture in the kitchen.
you have a large trinket collection of different figurine brands and you often try to buy one whenever you go to a new place.
you love video games, especially indie games or ones with cool graphics or complex stories. you often try to update atiny on what games you've been playing, having it be a mix of indie and triple a games.
in 2019, you took up the hobby of journaling/bullet journals and always have a journal in your bag with you when you travel.
you also have a digital one on your ipad that you are often seen working on in the background of logbooks.
you were the third trainee at kq, joining about a week or so after yunho did.
you have the most random livestreams out of all the members; this is often because of the time you go live or what you are doing during your lives.
when hongjoong got his laptop stolen, you and jongho helped re-record all his vocal guides.
as a result of all the livestreams, kq once banned you from going live for about two month; however, that didn't last as you still went live behind their backs.
you revealed in an interview that the member you are the closest too is wooyoung.
you used to share a room with wooyoung and yeosang at ateez's first dorm, then you and mingi shared a room, and now you have your own room but share a dorm with yunho and yeosang.
during fireworks era, you wore several bob cut wigs and had basically the whole atiny fandom believing you actually cut your hair.
you have went viral several times because of your stage looks, often starting popular trends for other idols. you'll usually be cited wearing something or having a specific hair color and then a few months later, other idols will do the same thing.
you also tend to go viral for your airport fashion as well, many atiny and netizens in general always waiting to see what you are going to wear.
you were the voice actress for final fantasy vii remake character eileen for both the japanese and english releases of the game. you also came back for the 2024 release of rebirth. eileen is a made up character and not actually in the game.
you made your acting debut in 2021 with the thriller drama "gothel" that aired on netflix. the drama did exceptional well and your acting in it was so well received that atiny are hoping for you to act again.
there has been rumors recently going around that you are rumored to star in a sci-fi, psychological horror movie, but nothing has been confirmed.
in 2024, you were invited to new york fashion week by both sandy liang and selkie along with paris fashion week by vivienne westwood.

summary: nearing the end of your pregnancy, you and jamie are stuck with the difficult decision of choosing a name
warnings: pregnant!reader, talks of accidental pregnancy + out of wedlock pregancy (idk if that needs to be warned but wtvr), one curse word
word count: 1.44k
Jamie shoved his keys into the lock, pushed open the door and stepped into the quiet home, a welcome change from the raucous rink heâd just left. Jamie called out your name but was met with silence. The house was unusually quiet, an almost serene atmosphere that made him curious. He dropped his bag at the door, the soft thud of it hitting the floor echoing slightly in the stillness. He ventured further into your home, glancing into the bedroom and kitchen, finding them both empty. Entering the living room, he finally spotted you on the couch, fast asleep.
Your swollen belly rose and fell gently with each breath, a book propped open on your stomach. Jamie took a moment to appreciate the scene, the soft afternoon light casting a warm glow over you. The sight of you resting so serenely, nurturing the life within you, brought a smile to his face. He felt a wave of affection and protectiveness wash over him, stronger than ever before.
Your falling pregnant had initially been an accident. Neither of you had planned for it and the news had come as a surprise. After consecutive mornings filled with nausea and random cravings for pickles, you brought up the prospect of potentially being pregnant to Jamie. He went out and bought pregnancy tests, with you taking them later that evening. Jamie remembered when the positive sign appeared on all four tests, your hands trembling with tears spilling down your cheeks â a mix of shock, fear, and an underlying sense of joy.
Jamie took you into his arms, whispering reassurances even as his own mind raced with thoughts of your future. The initial shock soon gave way to overwhelming excitement. Jamie had been on the fence about potential parentage, but the sudden reality of it had him more excited than ever.
You were now eight months pregnant, your lives slowly changing and adjusting to the impending rhythm of parenthood. Jamie watched with admiration as you embraced all aspects of the journey head-on, the good and the bad. Your resilience shone through even during the difficult days, which often included waking up with severe nausea and constantly feeling sore all over. Jamie also marveled at the way your body transformed, the pregnancy glow becoming a very real thing for you.
The house gradually filled with preparations for the baby, whom youâd come to learn was a girl. Gifts had come from those in your lives such as your families as well as Jamieâs teammates who had been nothing but supportive in your journey to parenthood. There was a crib in the corner of your bedroom, tiny clothes folded neatly in drawers, soft toys waiting to be loved.
In quiet moments like these, when he found you resting, he hoped to extend the peace for as long as possible. He knew that the stark reality of parenting would inevitably bring many late nights and hours filled with crying. These brief time-outs from life were precious, a refuge from the relentless demands that awaited. He wished to shield you from the exhaustion and overwhelm that he knew would plague you. Your due date was set right in the middle of the season, the both of you realizing that the first four months of responsibility would fall on your shoulders.
Jamie slowly and quietly approached you, reading the front cover of your book. 100,000+ Baby Names. Jamie chuckled softly as he bookmarked your page and placed it on the coffee table. The name of your daughter was something that you had been discussing since you found out about your pregnancy. Youâd each thrown out a couple of names, but nothing seemed right.
Jamie moved to kick off his shoes but accidentally bumped into the empty laundry basket on the side table, sending it careening to the floor.
âFuck.â Jamie said under his breath.
He glanced at you on the couch, hoping that the sudden noise had miraculously not woken you up, however, you stirred awake, blinking your eyes open and adjusting to the sunlight that flowed through the open windows. You spotted Jamie across from you, offering him a sleepy smile.
âHey you,â you whispered, stretching your arms above your head and sitting up.
"Hey yourself," Jamie replied, coming to your side and kissing your forehead softly, brushing a stray strand of hair out of your eyes. "Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you."
âItâs okay, I wasnât really sleeping anyways, just resting my eyes,â you tell him. With the baby being particularly active at night, you find your sleep schedule getting messed up and afternoon naps become a habit.
Jamie took a seat next to you, pulling you into his chest, and relaxing back onto the couch. âSo howâs my favourite mom-to-be?â he asked.
âTired as usual. No nausea though,â you said, Jamie offering his hand out for a high five, which you slap with a smile on your lips.
You nestle into each other's embrace, Jamie sticking a pillow under your belly to relieve some of the weight.
âSo, any new contenders?â he asked, motioning to the book on the table.
You sighed, shaking your head. âI donât think so,â you said. âI mean I read Sadie, which is cute but Iâm not totally sold.â
Jamie reached over, picking up the book off the coffee table and flicking open to a random page, scanning the names.
âHow about⌠Chloe?â he suggests.
You pull a sour face, shaking your head. âI knew a girl named Chloe back in grade school, and she was a bitch.â
Jamie chuckled, flipping through more pages. âSophia?â
You sighed, shaking your head once again. It felt like no name was the right one for your daughter.
âYâknow, Trevor called the other day. Told me that if we were still stuck on a baby name, we could always name her after him.â Jamie told you.
You snorted, shaking your head at the idea of naming your baby girl Trevor. âAbsolutely not. I do not need two Trevorâs in my life.â
Yours and Jamieâs laughter blended together, as you imagined naming your daughter after his friend. âYeah, we donât need to give Trevor even more of an ego boost,â Jamie said. âHeâs already declared himself an uncle.â
You and Jamie once again went back to reading names before you spotted one that caught your eye. You placed your finger on it, stopping Jamie from flipping pages. âHow about Darcy?â you suggested. âIt means dark-haired one.â you read from the page, reaching behind you and running a hand through Jamieâs black locks.
âDarcy,â Jamie repeated with a satisfied hum in his voice. âI like it.â
âDarcy it is then,â you said softly, placing a hand on your bump. âHi, little Darcy.â
Jamie placed the book of names on the coffee table and wrapped his arm around you, pulling you close. "Darcy," he said once again softly, the name finally feeling like the right one as it came off his tongue. "I can't wait to meet you."
You curled into Jamie, the warmth of his embrace and the sound of his heartbeat creating a comforting rhythm. The room filled with a peaceful silence, as your mind began to wander to the future. As you nestled closer, Jamie's hand found its way to your bump, resting there with gentle protectiveness. "Do you think she'll have your eyes?" he asked, his voice a soft murmur.
You smiled, imagining your daughter's tiny face. "Maybe. I think sheâll have your smile and your hair."
Jamie chuckled, the sound vibrating through you. "As long as she's healthy and happy, that's all that matters."
You nodded, feeling a wave of contentment wash over you. The future, once a vague concept, now felt more real with a name to hold onto. You could almost see her growing up, taking her first steps, saying her first words.
You and Jamie continued to talk about all the things you want to do with your daughter â reading her bedtime stories, teaching her to skate as you inevitably know youâll maintain a hockey family. His excitement was infectious, and you found yourself lost in the vision of the family you'll soon be.
The room grew quieter as the evening progressed, the soft glow of the lamp casting a gentle light around you. Jamie's voice became a soothing lullaby, and you felt your eyelids grow heavy.
"You're going to be such an amazing mom," Jamie whispered, his lips brushing against your temple. "I love you both so much."
You managed a sleepy smile, your heart full. "I love you too," you say before your eyes close and you drift into sleep.

Seconds Chances
A Cassian x Reader Imagine
The day that Rhysand saved you from the Autumn Court ranks up there with some of the best days of your life. Also up there is the day that he introduced you as a member of his Inner Circle, and your eyes first lay on Cassian.
You didnât think there was a single person in all of Prythian who would deny Cassianâs beauty. He was in an entirely different league to any male or female you had met before. What started as lust developed into a crush and, over the centuries, turned into feelings you couldnât quite describe. Although really, they could be summed up quite easily. You had fallen in love with Cassian.
You were sure Cassian did not return those feelings, but you truthfully didnât mind. You didnât want anything to risk destroying the friendship that you had with him. Cassian was the first there to pick you back up when you fell, to dry your tears and make you laugh again, to support you and encourage you to be the best version of yourself. It wasnât a surprise that you ended up falling in love with him. He cared for you in a way no one ever had before, and you were so grateful to have him in your life, even if you knew it would never be how you truly wanted him.
That was why, when you were walking the streets of Velaris after dropping off a letter for Rhysand, you were ecstatic to lock eyes with a blonde male and feel the snap in your chest as the bond clicked into place. After a brief exchange, you agreed to meet for dinner that night, and you rushed back to the River House to get ready.
-
âI found my mate!â, you screeched, running through the River House door. Feyre caught your hands and steadied you.
âYou what?!â, she replied, eyes wide.
âI found my mate!!!â, you repeat, practically bouncing in her arms with excitement. Feyre grinned and pulled you into a hug as several bodies appeared behind the pair of you.
âYour mate?â.
You looked over Feyreâs shoulder and straight at Cassian. His face was contorted slightly, almost like he was in pain. You quickly raked up and down his body looking for injuries, but you couldnât see anything obvious.
âThat is wonderful news!â, Rhys smiled, reaching over to pull you into a hug. âI knew the Night Court was the right place for youâ. He winked as he let you go, and your friends took it in turns to share their congratulations and shower you with hugs and affection. Cassian approached, a forced smile on his face as he pulled you in for a bear hug.
âIâm so happy for youâ, he said. He sounded genuine, but there was something empty about it. You knew that he had hoped a few females over the years had turned into his mate, including one of Feyreâs sisters, but the Mother hadnât yet blessed him. It must be hard for him to see his friendsâ mating bonds snap and not his own.
âThank youâ, you smiled, breathless from all the love of your family. âIf youâll excuse me, I need to get ready for a date with my mateâ. You beamed as you bounced up the stairs, closely followed by Feyre and Mor who insisted on helping you get ready.
-
Your family waved you off as you left for your date. You chuckled to yourself. They were almost more excited for you than you were for yourself!
As you approached the restaurant, you saw your mate standing by the door. The closer you got, however, the more you felt a deep void in your chest. You tugged the bond as you approached him, a gasp leaving your lips as you realise your figurative hands come up short, the bond no where to be found. Your raise your head to meet his, and his eyes hold an evil gleam.
âYou must be stupider than you look if you thought I was going to accept a bond with youâ.
You freeze. This wasnât the same male you spoke with this morning, was it? Seeing your confusion, he takes a step towards you, looming over you in a way so intimidating it made you whimper.
âLook at you. I would be the most foolish man alive to saddle myself with you for all eternityâ.
Whilst you did still stick out at the Night Court, quite clearly heralding from different lands, you knew you werenât unattractive. At least, you didnât think you were?
You couldnât bear his smirk any longer. You tried to pull the bond one more time and he noticed.
âItâs gone. Maybe now the Mother will realise the error of her ways and give me a second chanceâ.
Your heart broke.
You turned on your heels and ran for the River House.
-
Your family were not expecting you back from your date so soon, so when they heard you come thundering through the front door they all stood abruptly from their chairs. You looked in at them, faces full of concern and sorrow, and couldn't bear the pity. You fled up the stairs to the guest room and slammed the door behind you.
It was only a few minutes later that you heard someone knock at the door and Cassian's scent flooded in. He didn't wait for your reply. He walked over to the bed, sat, and pulled you onto his lap. You leaned into his chest and sobbed.
"What happened?".
"He broke the bond. He said only a foolish man would want to be saddled with me".
Cassian's heart hurt as he held you cried harder, soaking his shirt with your tears. He held you closer, trembling with anger that some male you met on the street could reduce you to tears like this, could take advantage of your kind heart, could throw away the one thing that he had prayed to the Mother every night could be his - your heart. He had wished for centuries for you, for your love, to be yours. This male had it in the palm of his hands and had thrown it away.
"What's wrong with me?", you asked quietly, avoiding his gaze.
"Nothing. Absolutely nothing. You are perfect", Cassian replied back softly, pressing a kiss to the top of your head.
"Then why didn't he want me?", your voice broke as you whispered the question.
Cassian had no answer. He only held you closer and let you cry in his arms.
8 months later
With the help of your family, you had slowly begun to heal. Your heart was mended piece by piece with each bit of love and care they showered you with. Cassian was by your side every spare moment he had, doing everything in his power to make you smile, laugh. It was music to his ears. You had also resumed your duties to the Night Court, after Rhys had insisted you take a prolonged vacation to focus on yourself and your healing.
It was at one of these Night Court meetings that your life changed forever.
You were characteristically late to the monthly Inner Circle meeting, having spent far too long in the library that morning. You ran into the room, out of breath, giving a sheepish and apologetic smile to Rhys. You went to take your seat beside Mor when you heard Cassian's sharp intake of breath. You looked up at him and felt it. The snap. It was so powerful you could have sworn the entire room heard it. Your eyes locked with Cassian's as you heard Feyre gasp, realising what had happened.
"Looks like the Mother gave you that second chance", Rhys smiled, pulling Feyre into his side as they watched the pair of you process what had just happened.
"My mate", Cassian whispered.
"My mate", you replied, breathless.
Within seconds, Cassian had cleared the table, swooped you into his arms, and walked out the room with you.
"I take it we need to reschedule, Cass?", Rhys called after the pair of you, amused.
Neither of you replied, simply gazing at each other as he carried you up the stairs.
"I prayed to the Mother for you every day for centuries", Cassian confessed, tears filling his eyes. Yours mirrored, as you reached up a hand to hold his cheek.
"I prayed for you too, Cassian".

One of President Donald Trumpâs first actions after taking office last month was to sign an executive order freezing foreign aid, much of which flows through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), an independent agency that represents less than 1 percent of the overall federal budget. The administration later said that âlifesavingâ work was exempt and could continue. But USAID employees and officials from nonprofit organizations say they are still being blocked from doing vital work on ending the global HIV/AIDS epidemic.
The consequences may be dire: âAt a minimum, 300 babies that wouldnât have had HIV, now do,â one current USAID worker estimates.
WIRED interviewed eight current and former USAID employees and contractors for this story, several of whom directly work on the agencyâs HIV and AIDS programs. They were granted anonymity due to fears of retaliation and because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the agency. USAID did not respond to requests for comment.
Elon Muskâs Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Service has plowed through several government agencies since President Donald Trump took office last month, proposing sweeping changes to federal infrastructure. But no agency has been gutted as thoroughly as USAID. A cadre of young DOGE agents have been stationed in USAIDâs headquarters since last week; after reportedly wresting control of USAIDâs secure systems and placing key personnel on administrative leave, the DOGE team began cutting off staff email accounts on a rolling, seemingly random basis, with no guidance or explanation, employees claim. âItâs been absolutely hellish,â says a current USAID employee who lost access to their email on Monday morning.
âWe spent the weekend feeding USAID into the wood chipper,â Musk said on social media Sunday. âCould [sic] gone to some great parties. Did that instead.â
One popular program implemented by USAID, however, has already been granted an âemergency humanitarian waiverâ to keep operating: the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR.
The global health program, which was founded by former US president George W. Bush and is overseen by the State Department, has saved an estimated 26 million lives since its launch in 2003. Itâs implemented by a handful of government agencies, including USAID. While in theory the Trump administrationâs waiver allows the program to resume some of its activities while the foreign aid freeze is still in effect, in reality, sources tell WIRED that much of its lifesaving work remains paused.
"Your money is being unfrozen but you canât contact the people who actually froze it," a senior official at an HIV/AIDS organization told WIRED. "Thereâs a bigger communication blockage that is frustrating even the efforts put in place to free up the lifesaving work."
Large numbers of USAID employees have been placed on administrative leave or locked out of their emails and work servers in recent days, including those working on a variety of what they say are critical public health missions. USAID staffers say this demonstrates that the emergency waiver application process is ineffective and isnât ensuring that aid workers can continue serving vulnerable populations.
USAID staff who still have access to their email accounts received a notice on Monday evening from Ken Jackson, the agencyâs assistant to the administrator for management and resources, saying that the agency âwould likely undergo a reorganizationâ and be integrated into the State Department. âAs we evaluate USAID and ensure it is in alignment with an America First agenda, the President Trump Administration, and the efforts of the State Department, we will focus on ensuring every agency dollar is delivering targeted and results-driven aid,â the email read.
In countries like Zambia, Nigeria, Haiti, and Mozambique, medical equipment ranging from antiretroviral drugs for treating HIV to pre-exposure prophylaxis and condoms that can prevent transmission of the disease are currently sitting in limbo, according to the same USAID worker who warned of a drastic uptick in the number of children living with HIV. The aid is unable to reach its destinations because the USAID workers tasked with logistics have been placed on administrative leave.
âWhen a baby is born, you do an early infant diagnostic test, and if it comes back positive, you can blitz them with retrovirals, but you canât do that if you donât have retrovirals,â the same USAID worker says. âItâs an absolute disaster.â
In Haiti, an aid worker confirmed that HIV/AIDS medication from USAID remains inaccessible. âWe cannot touch the medication,â they say. âEverything is on hold.â The worker added that nobody from USAID had answered their phone calls for days.
âThe Trump administration is playing with tens of millions of people's lives, and Haiti is just one consequential example of that in our hemisphere,â says Asia Russell, the executive director of the international HIV advocacy group Health GAP.
While PEPFAR is the most well-known HIV/AIDS program implemented by USAID, the agency has a number of additional projects devoted to the issue. One current USAID worker whose research focuses on prophylactic devices primarily for women in sub-Saharan Africa says that their work has been interrupted, too. They say members of their team were abruptly cut off from their work emails this afternoon. âWe hadnât yet applied for a humanitarian waiver,â they say. âWe donât even have a way of contacting IT.â
Democratic lawmakers and dozens of USAID employees protested in front of the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC, on Monday after they were denied access to USAIDâs offices. âThis illegal, unconstitutional interference with congressional power is threatening lives all over the world,â said Maryland representative Jamie Raskin.
A current USAID employee shared an email with WIRED they received from the agency on Monday night, informing them that USAID buildings in Washington will remain closed tomorrow. âWe will continue to provide further updates as they become available,â the email reads. âThank you for your cooperation.â

I have some random hatchetfield character HCâs (forgive me if any of these are repeats or already mostly canon haha) sorted by musical for ease.
TGWDLM :
-emma kills every house plant she touches but she doesnât know this because pauls like a savant with plants (plant daddy) and takes care of them without her knowing
-bill and alice used to go to an afternoon tea place every sunday after church. It was their special daddy/daughter activity until alice turned 10. Whenever Alice is feeling down she stops by the shop and grabs a scone. Sometimes sheâll leave one at her dads place before shes taken back to her moms.
-ted was rarely in petes life growing up. By the time pete was old enough to remember him, ted was already moved out. He knew pete looked up to him though, and loved it. He would visit home, tell tales of his conquests (lies), and give pete just the shittest advice on how to pick up chicks (pete was 7).
-charlotte was the badgirl cheerleader in high school. She looked like sandra dee but acted like Rizzo. Thats when she got involved with sam. At her lowest point when she was 26 (having to be saved by the coast guard after a night of partying had her stealing a boat and losing the paddles shortly after, leaving her adrift for several hours) she found the church and changed her ways. This initiated the divide with sam who didnât like this new version of her.
Black friday:
-toms favorite time of year was the first week of school. The kids were still squirrelly as they adjusted to class periods again, everyone was dressed in their best ready to show off their brace-less teeth or their new haircuts, there was a hum of excitement even as the kids groaned when they got their first piece of homework, and he got to play his favorite âaccidentally chopped his thumb offâ prank with all the freshman.
-Lindas always had âfriendsâ because of her extravagant birthday parties but there was only ever one that actually knew her. During her 11th birthday, after her father had mocked her pig nose in front of everyone during the cake photo, linda hid in her room, and no one noticed she was gone- except for one boy, who came to see if she was okay. They became close after that. It wasnât until months later that Linda learned he only came to ask because his mother made him (she was trying to find a way to lindas dad). She was so hurt that she had her dad pay off his parents to transfer him to sycamore.
-the first thing Lex ever bought was a bag of those shitty glow in the dark stars when she was 9 using the money sheâd saved by scrounging for cans. Sheâd wanted them for months after she saw them in a friends house but her mom refused. She kept them up for years, even though they didnât really glow anymore, because it reminded her that she could get things done on her own.
NPMD:
-steph is a huge gamer. She is frequently the highest scorer in any game she plays but her specialty is shooty games. Sheâs been known to seek revenge, often killing players she feels has wronged her over and over, hunting them down until the mods have to get involved. (I dont play games like that is that how it works? Lol)
-no one wanted to be the mascot. In fact, the kid who used to be the mascot quit the moment he heard max joined the team. The coach told them they needed one though so max grabbed the first dweeb he saw (richie) and shoved him inside. Richie had no choice but to roll with it, so even though it meant he was a target of maxs more often, it became worth it when people actually started cheering when he showed up. For him, its like cosplaying being popular.
-Ruth writes âfriend fiction.â Each chapter is a different scenario on how her and another classmate could become involved. Pete and steph both have multiple chapters. Richie has none (simply because its never crossed her mind.)
-grace was kicked out of debate club because she ended every argument by saying it was gods will

Hi, you were looking for people to send you asks reguarding the show, so here I go. Well I unfortunately don't have any questions about Inanimate Insanity as I havent seen it, but I have questions about hfjONE, as I havent found anyone to talk to about the show with.
What is your favourite character in ONE?
Favourite moment in the show?
What did you think about Airy's death, did you think it felt natural for the show, or do you think it should of gone in a different direction?
What do you think about the investigation mini-series that followed after? Also your doodles of the characters including the ones from Inanimate Insanity are adorable.
OH JOY TIME TO YAP!!!
Fav ONE character: for like "serious" favs Liam, Bryce and Airy. Love Amelia too, but I'll explain my thought process with why i picked those 3. First i fear i constantly fall in love with the main characters of shows, but to me Liam is different. It can be so easy for him to be characterized as the always caring wants to help everyone main character. But he just isn't that, he gets mad, he gets frustrated, he argues back with Bryce. And i really love that??? He has a heart of gold but he will beat the fuck outta airy if he gotta, and he did. With all of that and him being our main character he's still mysterious, like I'm going to be thinking till the day i die about why he didn't see anyone in The Waiting Room. For Bryce, if I'm being honest I'm not always a fan of asshole characters but he has so much depth in my eyes it makes me not well. He can, like Liam, could easily just be "always the asshole one that hates everything" character but he really isn't like that at all, he's immediately caring to Bryce and Amelia, he just puts his foot down to the obvious upsetting situation he was forced in. he left ONE like it was a bad dream and tried to move on like it was one, he found purpose and he moved on, he wouldn't have known that they were still in there after a month or so. he didn't see stone write those notes, after he finally has stability (if it is just running a fast food place) then more then half a year later some random fucking "dream" guy knocks at his door telling him to do things. And omg don't get me wrong Bryce is still an asshole, just a understandable asshole, and only one cause of the situation he was forced in. For the themes of the show, i love that he is a little selfish, people aren't perfect, people can and will be selfish sometimes (that also goes back to airy's character but i look away). his development out of any character was amazing, the "I'm not in the suburbs anymore" line makes me scream and cry every ONE rewatch. Airy is just the perfect villain for a show like this, i can go on about how the writing of the "people" characters are so rich and have several layers of depth that my little autistic brain wants to pick. But this is already long and i have 4 more questions. for a show that has a concept theme of life and emotion, the villain being one that lacks emotions is just SO good it makes me want to claw on the walls. Still with that he still has SOMETHING, he helps Liam, but he also was the one that trapped him. Is he good? is he bad? well for a show that actively tries to NOT put characters in a box of "the nice one and the mean one" those types of questions are very shallow. did airy deserve what he got? was there a better way? well there's always a better way when you're looking from the outside, but inside, airy was just broken (literally haha). there's no forgiving, why would you, what airy did was awful. but you can understand, if only a little. the last line in the whole show being "when you got nothing better to do you'll find anything to occupy yourself" was so good i can keep writing paragraphs about airy but I NEED TO MOVE ON OMG. (fav non-serious characters are atom, subway seat and whippy creamy)
Favorite moment of ONE: For s1, it has to be the end of episode 4, but not the part of stone leaving, Amelia snapping at Airy. First time watching ONE i actually started tearing up at that scene, and it made me realize "oh shit this show is something different". All i wish is that the show explored Amelia more, even though i know that's the whole thing with the show, leaving things up for the audience to figure out. but i feel she got a little TOO much for us to figure out and basically nothing on her. For s2, it has to be the intro on ep 18. Every single time i watch that scene i tear up a little, Bryce's voice actor did AMAZING during that scene (and that says a lot cause the voice acting is amazing through out the whole show). The dread of already knowing what's gonna happen, the music, Bryce basically yelling at airy like he's an angry god. like OUGH it makes me freak out every single time i watch it.
Thoughts on airys death: When i first watched it i was definitely shocked, but i trusted the writing enough to know that it wasn't just "oh random shock value" moment. I love how bitter sweet it is, i love that he went back to the Waiting Room and now it looks like the exact place he trapped other people. He got his karma for what he did, now he has to sit and basically start over, fine another place or sit there and rot like toothpaste had to do. i like to think about if it was an accident or on purpose a lot, obviously it was an accident (at least to me), but was he thinking about it? why did he make the bridge so unstable? he's been there for 10 years, he made a whole house, but not a safe bridge? was he actively being careless? my friend pointed out to me that he does have a very new injury, that might have messed up his brain (even more), or his vision. I just love bitter sweet endings, i love thinking about "what next", and getting to see it, lets my brain start running.
Thoughts on investigation mini-series: OH I LOVED IT, it's more story building but it leaves the ending the same. more stuff about Taylor (the mini-series made me love her more), and background characters. it's just more of cheesyHFJ flexing his character writing and i'm here for it i will EAT IT UP!!!
Thank you so much for the questions! my GOD this was longer then i wanted, call me the yap master (im not)
heres a doodle of my fav ONE characters just for fun ^__^

Maybe this is a dumb baby question but, How do you know if a spell works? Iâm investigating different practices and all the spells are like⌠focus, luck, etc, like things that are supposed to either influence my interior state or encourage certain events to occur. But I canât help but think that if magic was ârealâ it could do things that are obvious or immediately observable. Have you ever done anything you think was undeniably magic? How did you know?
Not a dumb baby question.
It works if it works! And you can test this.
Broadly speaking we can divide all practical sorcery into two categories: verifiable and unverifiable.
It's really hard to know if an unverifiable spell works. E.g., a spell for focus could often be explainable by the placebo effect. (Or, this lovely Guardian Animal Shielding exercise, which is a fun and relaxing thing to do).
But a verifiable spell is something that you should be able to test and see if your magic did or didn't work.
A good way to find sources of verifiable magic in your life is to observe relatively stable patterns in your own life which have been going on for months, and then cast a spell to directly change it.
An example might be always getting a bad parking spot at work - and then trying to get a very good parking spot.
Either you get to work and have a great place to park even though the whole lot is normally full, or you don't. The spell worked, or it didn't.
Yes, I've worked magic that is obvious and immediately observable. I've worked so much of it and some of it is so miraculous that I don't talk about it publicly because practitioners have a lot of hangups about what kind of magic they think is allowed to exist.
But more importantly I think that while wanting magic to be real, and sorcery to work, are very valid, just chasing that realness alone is probably going to lead you to a path of misery. Here are some of my thoughts on this: On witchcraft as spirituality
Here are some random stories:
At one time there were many arguments in the household due to home renovations (stressful!). I cast a spell to cause one person in the household to be more mindful of the situation. I cast the spell and stepped outside of my practice space. That person was, surprisingly, in the yard and started asking me questions about the exact issue I had just cast on. We ended up having a very long conversation and after that the arguments stopped.
Some years ago the neighbor was causing horrible ruckus and giving my partner awful anxiety, as he could clearly hear it through the old, thin window. I found a bit of thread and "tied up" the neighbor's loud sounds into a knot, and weighted it down with a rock on the windowsill. At this time I wasn't living with my partner, so I came back some weeks later to see the knot. I thought I'd get rid of it, but when I moved the rock my partner stopped me.
"You know what's strange? After you put that there, the neighbor stopped being loud."
I looked at the disrupted rock, which was to "weigh down" the spell, and immediately the neighbor started yelling. I put the rock back, and about 30 minutes later he piped down again and stayed quiet.
Years later, after many calls to the police from many people in the neighborhood with no traction at all, I used the Justice tarot card in a spell and that neighbor was permanently removed from the home within a couple of weeks.
At one time, I was trying to do a distance energy reading for someone. But something was wrong; I couldn't see clearly. In fact it looked like they were consumed by a black void... then presently a lighter blue color was around the blackness, then white, then dark blue. It was no energy I was familiar with and I double-checked with the person that they had no magical protections to stop me from Seeing them.
"Oh, the only ward I didn't take down was my nazar." đ§żđ§żđ§żđ§ż
I have Very Silly Tendons, and in the morning I usually have a painful limp for several minutes until my foot stretches out. That is, of course, unless I remember to do a very simple energy exercise the night before. Then my foot is as loose and supple as a bowl of buttered noodles.
Once, I cast a spell using the planetary energies of Mercury in order to secure a good deal on a used van. I put in very specific requirements, and asked that if I tried to buy a van that didn't meet these requirements, that the elementals would stop me and not let the deal go through. Immediately after I cast the spell I found a van which was disqualified from the list, but I reallllly wanted it. I contacted the Craiglist seller, who didn't respond for a couple of days, but the listing stayed up.
The next morning my friend contacts me. She says she had a dream that yellow tornadoes came and told her to give me a message; that I was making a mistake.
Well if you know Mercury, then you know yellow airy energies are really his thing.
I immediately set up the spell again, retracted my requests, and apologized for going against what I said I wanted.
The seller contacted me within the hour, and I got the van.

sorry won't cut it (rewrite) â sam and dean winchester
cw : gn!winchester!reader, angst, hurt/comfort, barely different from the original but slightly adjusted to fix some canon details i got wrong and adjust to my changed perspective of the whole purgatory situation, sam and dean did reader wrong, swearing, arguments, crying, nicknames (kid, kiddo, honey, sweetheart), 4.1K words.
summary : since dean disappeared, sam has been distant. when he calls you and you find out dean's back, you also find out that both of your older brother's have been lying to you.
MOVED BLOGS TO @sammyluvr !! no longer active on this blog! all fics can be found there!
when sam answers your call, it comes as a relief. a surprise, but more than anything, a relief. itâs been two and a half months, almost on the dot, since heâs answered a call. usually itâs just one month. he has a single burner phone just for you, but itâs off half the time, and the other half he never answers.
youâve grown used to his distance, to an extent. it still stings when your phone rings till voicemail sometimes, but youâve just been too tired to argue with him, to ask him to comfort you, make him keep hashing through the pain of looking for dean and finding nothing but trouble.Â
you want him to have the normalcy, the girl who loves him and makes him feel alright. you want to have faith that heâll figure out how to factor you into it all eventually, but you still miss him, and youâre still lonely, so you keep calling, never getting angry or upset when he occasionally picks up. you just act like itâs normal, and you can tell he appreciates it, so you keep it up. in return, he asks you over sometimes, tells you each time how much amelia raves about you after you leave, and hugs you tight before you go.
itâs been several months since heâs invited you over, and he doesnât really talk about her anymore. you figure something must have happened, but you never push anything anymore with him.
this call is different. one, because he finally picks up. two, because he tells you to meet up with him, no explanation or normal talk about what you should bring for dinner. three, he asks you to meet at a random address in kansas.
he sighs deep, âjust⌠get here as soon as you can. iâll send you the location.â then he hangs up and it feels like the hunting life all over again.
â˘
itâs a seven hour drive, and youâre tired out of your mind, high-strung and worn out from leaving right after your shift at a diner full of sleezes who donât tip enough. even though this whole thing is strange for the new, hunting-free sam, thereâs relief coursing through you at the thought of seeing him, hoping heâll let your tired feet carry you right into his arms. you pull into a driveway of sorts, no obvious entrance to the unremarkable building in front of you, but your years of hunting and meeting up with your brothers at strange places during strange hours after strange calls help you find the door. it's a bunker, one you've never seen before.
you were always a little bit more like sam, disillusioned to the hunter life and the way your father raised you. you werenât a fighter like him, but you slipped away at eighteen to go to college and found somewhere near stanford so youâd be able to visit sam often. he loved that, always so glad that you got out too. but you were barely gone a year before dean came back to collect you and sam to look for your dad. you came easier than sam, less attached to your new place and always finding yourself missing dean.
thatâs what youâd been doing this past year. missing dean, and painfully. so when you knock on the door, calling out, âitâs me, sammy,â you freeze when it opens several beats later.
because the person behind the door isnât sam. but it is your older brother. just the one whoâs been who knows where and presumed dead, for the last year or so. the one youâve endlessly searched for to no avail.
âdean?â your voice is small as his name slips from your mouth.
his eyes go soft, the way they rarely get, and the slight smile on his lips is half pained, half pure relief to see you after so long. âhey, kid.â
you launch yourself into his arms, and he catches you easily, right there in the doorway, and you have to fend off tears that you know wouldnât put up so much of a fight if you werenât so exhausted. but you were raised tough, and winchesters donât cry all that often, at least not where someone else can see. so you swallow hard and tough it out, letting dean pull away from you and lead you inside. he moves through the house with a sort of ease heâd only have if he felt comfortable and safe there. this raises questions, along with the fact that he's here at all.
youâre speechless, but not for a lack of anything to say. endless questions stream through your mind, each one pushing to be asked, even more desperate to be answered.
but the only thing you can figure out how to say is âhiâ to sam when he greets you in the living room. he pulls you into a hug, letting you linger for a moment before you know you have to ask all of the hard questions. something in his face is unreadable to you, which is rare when it comes to your brothers. if you didnât know any better, youâd think it was a hint of guilt. that rings alarms in your mind, but you brush your nerves aside when dean takes a seat on the couch.
you relax a bit when you sink down next to him, curling into his side a little. it makes you feel a bit childish, but you need it after everything this past year. he doesnât hesitate to wrap his arm around your shoulders and pull you a little closer. sam sits down across from the two of you and you heave a sigh, wondering where to start.
opening your mouth and forcing words out is like a crack in a dam. everything comes out slow at first, but that lasts mere seconds before the flood.
âwhere⌠dean, where were you? i mean, i triedâ i tried everything, i looked everywhere,â your voice breaks at that word, the weight of it meaning something only you understand. you look at him, brows taught and youâre confused by the surprise on his face, as if he didnât expect you to say such a thing.
âwhat do you mean, you tried everything?â he asks, voice suddenly gruff and severe. you recoil from his side to get a better look at him. you donât miss the look he shoots sam. this is already departing from what you expected, which is probably exactly what you should have expected, given your brothers. itâs just that, when dean hugged you back and he was solid and real and alive, when he sat on the couch instead of a chair so you could sit next to him, you thought that maybe, just maybe, youâd be able to stay tucked safe into his side as they told you what happened, as they asked you to stay with them.Â
âwhat do you mean?â you shoot back. âwhat, did you think iâd just kick back and call it someone elseâs problem?â
âthatâs what sam did. thatâs what sam said you did.â his voice is accusatory and when you whirl to look at sam, utter bewilderment evident on your face, you can see him physically grimace. which means deanâs telling the truth.
âsam did what?â the question sounds like itâs targeted for dean, but youâre staring the younger down.
âlisten, iâ iâll explain it to you later. what do you mean you did everything, you said you were going to school?â sam looks irked and defeated all at once.
âthat is completely beside the point, sam, you lied to me?â you ask, voice tired and bordering on distressed, âbut youâre not going to explain to me why? why you lied to me or why you apparently didnât look for dean, i mean whatâ whatâs up with that?â deanâs hand on your shoulder prevents you from standing as your voice grows strained.
âlisten, kid, sam and i, weâve already hashed this out, okay? itâs uhâ itâs fine, alright?â with the way he says the word âfineâ, you know that it still bothers dean, so you canât understand why heâd say so. âweâve got things to discuss here,â dean tries to reason with you before sam can respond. heâs no peace maker, but a full blown fight between the two of you could have an ugly ending.
âthings to discuss?â you repeat, in disbelief of the audacity. knowing them, that means they need something from you, which begs the question of why sam asked you over in the first place. you donât even want to think about them having ulterior motives outside ofjust wanting to see you, so you brush it off angrily.Â
âwell, iâm glad to hear that you two have hashed it out, but i havenât yet, so we can discuss whatever that is later.â you shrug off deanâs hand, trying to focus on the things youâre already angry about instead of asking the even bigger question nagging at you now. when the hell did dean get back that those two had time to hash out something that major? you turn your anger back to sam, thinking about what it was like when dean first disappeared. âyou told me you looked. you told me you did all that you could, that you tried everything in your power. now deanâs telling me that you did nothing?â
sam sighs heavily. âyes. okay, listen, iâm sorry i lied to you. but i just wanted you to try and live your life for once. i figured if i told you i did everything i could, that, i donât know, maybe youâd give up and try to move on? go to school, do something you love, have real friends, maybe find someone?â he throws his hands up in the air, a defeated gesture because he knows you donât agree, while he still thinks he did the right thing.
you scoff, because, god, he really has no idea. arms crossed and face the kind of calm that says run to anyone on the other end of your anger, you nod in false understanding. âyeah, what good that did,â you say, your tone so sarcastic and dry that sam just clenches his jaw and deanâs face turns from concerned to full-blown worried. he wonders if he should ask what that means, because whatever it does, itâs certainly not âgood.âÂ
but you pick up again after a moment of thick, dripping silence. âyou know, sam, you have absolutely no idea how this past year really was for me. iâm not saying it was easy for you, because i know it wasnât. though now i know you also skipped the trouble of looking for dean and really, actually lived that hunting-free life you wanted. andââ you pause a moment, purposefully not looking at dean. âand itâs notâ not bad that you got that, sam, all iâm saying is that just about nothing has been all, i donât know, rainbows and butterflies more like you think,â your voice takes a scathing edge, a tone so rare to both of your brothers that neither knows what to say, âand you know what, sam? itâs looking to me like iâd be a lot better off if youâd just decided to tell me the goddamn truth.â
sam says your name, tentative like heâs testing hot waters, âi thought you said things were going well. you said you liked school, that you were making friends there? just explain to me what you mean so we can figure this out.â
âfigure it out,â you repeat under your breath, sticking your tongue against the inside of your cheek to keep from saying something too harsh. âsam, things were going well! they were!â now youâre feeling desperate to make him understand, âbut that night you told me there was nothing else we could do, nothing else to try and that i should just do my best to move on? i couldnât, sam, i couldnât do that. there had to be something more we could do, so i gave up on the things you said you did and i went further. i let you think i was fine, that i was doing what you wanted for me because you always sounded so tired. you always sounded like one more thing on your plate would make the sweet little life you built come crashing down, so i made sure you wouldnât have to worry about me.â
deanâs does his best to make his interruption gentle, though heâs not the best at hiding his frustrations sometimes. he doesnât want to upset you more, but you can hear the tension in his voice when he asks, âkiddo? what do you mean by you âwent further?ââ
suddenly you shrink in on yourself, your lower lip caught between your teeth and your eyes shining with fresh tears. âdeanâ,â your voice breaks before you can even say anything else. his hand is on your back, meant to be comforting, but it only makes you feel worse about it all. you know how much dean would hate the lengths you went to to try and get him back. âi canâtââ you shake your head, ignoring your oldest brother, âi canât right now, but maybe⌠maybe if youâd told me the truth, sam, if iâd just started by reading through all of bobbyâs books like you said you did, things would have worked out differently.â
âwell, maybe if you told me you were going to keep trying, i could have helped you!â sam fires back.
you let out a strangled, frustrated noise as you stand, unable to keep sitting down. âwould you? really? because i really donât think you wouldâve! you were so focused on moving on from losing dean that you distanced yourself from me, too! you barely picked up, never called, only talked about dean in three word sentences to tell me a lie about how you tried and failed to find anything to help! maybe if you paid any attention to me, gave any indication that you wanted to help or see me or be a major part of life like i wanted of you, i would have opened up to you!â it makes you even more angry when your voice turns teary, âand for once, i wanted to try to be the one to take care of you two. i kept my secrets, i never let on how fucking lonely i was, just so you wouldnât worry about me!âÂ
a stunned silence falls over you brothers, samâs guilt beginning to overrun his natural response of anger, and dean making up for that fading anger with his own. your chest heaves with laboured breath as you stare sam down.
deanâs tone is icy as he breaks the silence, âsam, is that really how you treated them while i was gone?â
sam exhales hard, ignoring dean in favor of looking at you, âi was just doing what i thought was the best for both of us. i didnât know, okay, iâm sorry. i really am.â he looks sorry, and sad, like this is the opposite of what he wanted. under your anger, you know itâs true that he never wanted this. you know that sam thinks people are better off distant from him. but it hurts that he let you be one of those people.
âare you kidding me?â you exclaim, voice turning shrill as your composure slips further and further. âpeople got hurt, on my account,â you have to force that part out through gritted teeth, âi got kicked out of school, and i spent three months running from hunters!â both sam and dean want to interrupt at that. but you keep going, your voice quieter now, harsh and trembling, âbut you were doing what you thought was best for both of us? try what was best for you. dean was gone, and i needed you, sammy, i needed you and the second you said you needed to get away, alone, i knew i didnât have you.â
that shuts him up, has him deflating and his guilt taking over, and you can see it and you hate it. you almost wish heâd get angry instead because that means you can keep shouting at him to try and make him understand. but all you get are his clenched jaw, his sad eyes, and his guilty silence that tell you he knows he fucked up but he canât figure out a way to make it better since sorry sure as hell wonât cut it.
itâs dean who cuts into the heavy silence again. âsam.â his name hangs in the air, weighed down with unspoken words. weâll talk about this later, you guess is the message. you can feel how angry dean is without even looking at him. you know all he ever asked of sam if he was gone was to take care of you, and now dean knows he didnât. he tried, the way he thought was right, but he didnât. then his attention is back on you. he says your name, clear and careful. âiâm gonna need you to tell me what you did.â
you wipe at your face angrily as you whirl to face dean. trying to keep the ever present tears at bay, you tap right back into your anger. but it's more tired this time, less convincing with your voice taut from unshed tears begging to be released.
âall that, and thatâs what you take away from this? really, dean? youâre gonna need to know what i did? i donât need you to tell me to know thatâ that it was wrong and i donât need you to make me feel any more shitty than i already do right now, okay?â
itâs his turn to wear a look of guilt on his face, but it only sits there for a flash before he keeps going. âkid, thatâs not what iâm trynaâ do here, alright? i just wanna understand so i can keep us safe, yeah?â he puts his hands out in a peaceful motion, but something else unresolved floats back up into your focus.
âno. dean, no! because thereâs something else here, something both of you have been avoiding this entire time!â thereâs a sudden change in the air, like both of them are holding their breath, silently begging you wonât ask the question. âdean, how long have you been back?â
his hesitancy to answer tells you everything. âkid, listen, thatâs not impââ
âdonât you dare say itâs not important! did you hear anything i just said, dean? anything about how shit my life has been since youâve been gone, how lonely iâve been?â
âyouâre right,â sam relents, forging on before dean can stop him, âheâs been back for three months now. itâs my fault we didnât tell you. itâs all my fault, and believe me, i am so sorry.â you collapse into a chair with your head in your hands as he continues, âi know that does nothing to fix things, but i am sorry, and i swear iâm gonna spend the rest of my life trying to make it up to you, kiddo. iâm all in now, and i did it all so this wouldnât have to be your life, but youâre here now and we want more than anything to have you around, okay?âÂ
you lift your head up to stare at him. âthree months.â your voice is dangerously quiet. âyou twoâŚâ your tired mind canât think of words strong enough, âdrive me insane, you know that? dean, you justâ you just went along with that and decided, let me guess, that it was best for me? because i was at school, living a normal life and away from the danger of this one? is that it? itâs best for me not to know my brotherâs alive? because, you know, that reminds me of something. hm, maybe the time sam hid from us that he was alive for a year because he didnât have his fucking soul? oh, yeah, it must be that.â you let out a short bark of laughter, but it and your voice are completely devoid of any humor. dean visibly recoils when you mention that. heâs thought of it, and still decided to keep you in the dark. âcome on, dean, you know how that feels and you go and do it to me again? really? you gonna tell me you came back from wherever the hell you were without a soul next? whereâ where even were you?â you ask shrilly.
youâve beat him too. âsweetheart,â he sighs, âiâm sorry. we were wrong to do that to you, okay? iâ i was in purgatory. i can explain the rest later.â
finally, you think you might be out of things to say, to be hurt about. your voice is quiet and fragile now, and the dam holding back your tears is fractured in a million places, more than ready to break. âi missed you so much. both of you,â you whisper. you meant to make a scathing comment about how âsorryâ and âwe were wrongâ donât even begin to cover it, but you find that youâre not in complete control of the things coming out of your mouth. youâre just too goddamn tired. dean is crouching in front of you in an instant.
âi missed you, too, sweetheart. so much. iâm sorry.â he takes it as a good sign that you let him place his hand on your knee. you want to flick it away, maybe shove him away too.
âand i was so, so lonely. i was so scared,â you cry out, wishing you didnât have to cry when you got angry. âand iâm so mad that you two did this to me. three monthsâŚâ
âi know, kiddo, i know. iâm sorry.â gently, slowly, he tugs you towards him and into his arms and you slide onto the floor and cry into his chest, shaking and unable to say a thing. you want to tell him this doesnât make it right, but dean hushes you gently when you try. âshhh, itâs okay. iâm here now,â he comforts. itâs true that this doesnât make it right, but itâs almost all you need in that moment.
âsammy,â you choke out, still so angry with him, but wanting him near anyways, knowing that heâs too scared to come close to you after coming face to face with all of the ways you were hurt. his hand is on your back a moment later, hesitant at first, then strong and soothing moments later when you blindly grab for the fabric of his flannel to keep him close.
âokay. okay, iâm here. iâm sorry. iâve got you, i promise,â he whispers, silently letting a few of his own guilty tears fall.
utterly exhausted, you stay slumped on the floor in dean's arms when your tears dry up. you can barely keep your eyes open and your breathing is soft and slow.Â
âletâs get you to bed,â dean whispers, hoisting you all the way up as he stands. âsamâll grab you a glass of water.â you sigh an imperceptible sigh because you know that dean is still pissed at sam. rightfully so, youâre more than just pissed at both of them, but youâre too tired to care in this moment, and the last thing you want is for them to be angry at each other. thatâs your job for when you wake up hours from now.Â
dean leads you to a foreign room and foreign bed, and you sink down onto the edge of it. sam is back moments later with the promised glass of water and tissues for your face. you cave to your exhaustion, climbing all the way into the bed. you curl up and tug at the covers slightly, eager to fall asleep.
âsee you in the morning,â you mumble, effectively dismissing them with your voice hoarse from crying. you close your eyes before either of them can say a thing, not wanting to look them or your remaining problems and anger in the face.but your words are also a whisper of the beginning of forgiveness.Â
âgoodnight, kiddo,â dean says, his voice full of a familiar affection that he only uses for his little siblings as he presses a kiss to your hairline. he lingers at the doorway before
you drowsily register the sound of sam setting the glass of water on the night stand by your head. âiâm right across the hallway if you need anything.â a moment, then, âgoodnight,â and a gentle hand on the side of your head before a kiss to your temple.
you fall asleep coming up with a list of petty ways youâll have them make things up to you. neither sam nor dean will be pleased to hear that youâre calling shotgun in the impala for the next three months, minimum. sam for obvious reasons, and dean because heâll know that means youâll be taking your job as youngest sibling to annoy the living hell out of him very seriously.

surprise!
vanessa shelly x reader
tw: none really, slight mention of william afton killing kids
a/n: this is really random but i love the way vanessa says "frickin'" in the movie so i included it in this fic
================================================
You scanned the room around you one last time, checking that everything was in place as planned.Â
Gold and white balloons adorned every corner, streamers hung off the ceiling, and a romantic candle-lit dinner was prepared on the dining table. The only thing missing was the subject of celebration, who you suspected should be arriving any moment now.Â
"Happy birthday!" You cried out as Vanessa finally stepped through the front door. She was immediately taken aback; however, her expression quickly became one of joy.
"What is all this, Y/N? You didn't have to!"Â
You knew that Vanessa didn't like to make a big deal out of her birthday. Hell, you weren't even sure if she remembered that today was her special day, with the way she never mentioned it (in fact, the only reason you knew her birthday was because of that singular time it slipped into the conversation when you were just a month into dating).Â
"Nessa, babe. I know you have a hard time celebrating yourself, but today is your day, so let me help you feel special, m'kay?" You helped her out of her work gear and guided her to the dining table. Arranged was a variety of all her favourite dishes, alongside a vase of roses. You gave a shy laugh; the food had taken you several attempts before it was satisfactory. "I'm not the best cook, but I tried my best."
"God, I don't even know what to say," Vanessa couldn't suppress the grin that stretched across her face. "Thank you so much, my love. You are the sweetest frickin' angel ever."
One hand cupped your cheek and the other found its home on your waist as she pulled you in for a kiss, her cherry flavoured-lips fitting perfectly against your own. She smelled amazing, like an elixir of vanilla and jasmine that you had now associated with warmth and comfort.
"How about we eat before the food gets cold, and continue this later?" You whispered when you finally pulled apart for air, your face a centimetre away from hers.Â
"You're right. I gotta see if I should make you do all the cooking from now on."
Dinner was filled with laughter, flirty exchanges, and your girlfriend complimenting your culinary skills. You swore that your face was bright red by the end of it, with her praises and the way she made you giggle till you couldn't breathe.Â
"Alright, alright, if you thought the steak was good, just wait till you see the cake," you got up and proudly made your way to the fridge.
"There's cake too? You're going to put me into a food coma!"
"Wouldn't be a birthday without a cake. Made it myself too," the excitement in your voice was evident as you set down a colourful cake on the table. Vanessa gasped as she took a closer look.Â
On the cake was your best attempt at drawing you, Vanessa, and the four animatronics in icing. You were definitely not a professional artist, but your years of art lessons as a kid paid off, if you said so yourself. It was a depiction of your girlfriend's favourite picture: one taken at the pizzeria while the six of you danced to music, Vanessa in your arms as the animatronics looked on with joy (as best as they could, in their robotic ways).
You looked to her for approval, but were alarmed when you were met with her tear-streaked face instead.
She caught you staring in concern and buried her face in her hands, shoulders trembling as she sobbed. You had rarely seen Vanessa cry like this, not even after almost getting murdered by her own father.Â
"Vanessa? What's wrong, sweetheart?" You wrapped an arm around her, thumb rubbing her shoulder comfortingly.
"I'm sorry," she lifted her head to look up at you with teary eyes. It was astounding how beautiful she looked, despite her smudged mascara and red puffy eyes. "I'm not sad, I promise. It's just, as cheesy as this sounds, no one has ever made me feel this important before. I think you're the first person in this world that has ever loved me like this."
"Baby," you kissed her forehead, on the verge of crying yourself.
"And I can see that you put in so much effort to learn all these little details about me, not to mention the time you must have spent putting this whole thing together. Y/N- fuck, I feel like I don't deserve you."
You rested your head on the nape of her neck, your hand finding hers to interlace your fingers together,Â
"The last time I had a birthday party, I was eight," she continued with a sniffle. "And,"Â
A sigh interrupted her sentence, and you could guess that this next part was hard for her to say:Â
"You know, when thereâs a bunch of unsuspecting, innocent children around, my father...h-he takes advantage of that. I begged him to never have a birthday party again after that, because though I might not have been able to stop him, I couldn't bear to be an accomplice to his crimes."
Vanessa's father really messed her up----that much you knew----but it still broke your heart every time you heard her speak about it.
"What he did will never be your fault, Nessa. I love you more than you know, and I need you to know that you deserve nothing but the best."Â
She cracked a weak smile. "Okay, okay, enough sob stories. I want to be in a good mood when we cut this gorgeous cake of yours."
"You know what, I have something else that may be able to cheer you up." You shook your head in amusement. "Don't you wanna see the presents I got you?"
From behind the living room couch, you grabbed a large gift bag and presented it to her.Â
And oh did she love it. She couldnât stop squealing in excitement as she opened your present: a book that was on her reading list, a candle with her favourite scent, a gold necklace that you caught her eyeing at the jewelry store, and a photo album filled with pictures of the two of you.Â
The cherry on top was a heartfelt card that brought tears to her eyes, once again.
âAnd also,â you began to unbutton the top of your blouse, allowing her to catch a glimpse of the hot pink lingerie underneath. âA bonus gift.â
âHoly shit, I really am spoiled!â
