Had a particularly deep Hetalia thought come into my head yesterday, it just speaks to me.
So over the last year, I discovered Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, which is a beautiful Russian opera all about unrequited love. Tatyana is a young woman in the countryside, born into good family, very bookish and introverted. When she meets Onegin, a new neighbour who is looking after an ailing uncle, she is instantly head over heels for him. She writes him a letter telling him her feelings, only for him to reject her and tell her that love and passion are too frivolous for adults to bother with. Years later, he returns after travelling for years (after killing Tatyana's sister's betrothed in a duel), and discovers that Tatyana married a prince and is now a societal beauty, and finally realizes what he missed out on.
In terms of Hetalia, the novel by Pushkin was published in the 1820-1830's, while Tchaikovsky's opera premiered in 1879. This was knee-deep in the era of the Russian empire, where Lithuania and Belarus were firmly stuck in Russia's house as his subordinates.
Lithuania in particular used to be a European power as part of his commonwealth with Poland, but has now lost all that. Over the years, through what I've read on Wiki about their mutual history, Belarus was controlled by the Commonwealth for significant amounts of time, when she wasn't controlled by her brother. As such, when they're both part of the Russian Empire in the 1800's, the only constant from Lithuania's past that is still at his side is, well, Belarus.
As we all know from Hima's canon, Lithuania has pined for Belarus for years, but that affection is unrequited. Belarus has pined for her brother for years, but that is also unrequited. And while not addressed in canon explicitly, we all know there is tension between Russia and Lithuania, where Russia wants to be closer but Lithuania does not.
So, here's the deal: I think all three of them relate to Tatyana. I also think they are each other's Onegin.
Lithuania is the Tatyana to Belarus's Onegin.
Belarus is the Tatyana to Russia's Onegin.
Russia is the Tatyana to Lithuania's Onegin.
This story resonates with all three of them. Sure, the conclusion where Onegin eventually comes around and figures out what was missed before is unlikely to happen, the eventual requiting does not fit this triangle at all.
Perhaps an even hotter take, if anyone flies by it at all, is that Belarus once admired Lithuania during the Commonwealth times, when she was a much younger (and a bit naive) subordinate of his, but that faded away quickly once she grew up and Russia gained power. That would also make Lithuania more of an Onegin, as he reflects on what could've been after he's lost everything and has to watch her fawn over her now-powerful brother.
Long story short, you can't convince me that these three do NOT love this story and this opera, and that all three of them have definitely cried whenever a soprano sings Tatyana's letter scene beautifully enough. (As much as Lithuania will deny his appreciation for any Russian art, this is the one exception.)

"You hurted yourself. Again."
"I guess I should say: I am deeply sorry."
"Do not act so reckless, Alfred."
"—Promise. And you should take a rest, you look tired."
"I am fine. Do not worry about me."
I have MANY pending books to read, whether diaries, reports, story books, Brazilian Pracinhas and Nurses and much more. But to save time, I decided to just read a few quick articles to prepare this post.
All pointed here is in a historical view.
Brazil was officially the only South American country to send troops to the conflict under its flag.
Historically, Brazil's actions prevailed in Italy. It was where Brazil sent its troops, and its participation in the war was delayed as Brazil wanted to maintain its relations with both sides and remain neutral throughout the conflict. After German and Italian attacks suffered by Brazilian ships, Brazil gave up its neutrality, siding with the Allies.
American military bases were built in the Northeast region of Brazil and Brazilian troops received American training.
"In 1939, with the beginning of the Second World War, Brazil remained neutral, in continuation of President Getúlio Vargas' policy of not defining itself by any of the great powers, only trying to take advantage of the advantages offered by them. Such "pragmatism " was interrupted at the beginning of 1942, when the United States and the Brazilian government agreed to transfer air bases on the island of Fernando de Noronha and along the north-northeast Brazilian coast to receive American military bases (if negotiations had not result, with Vargas and the military insisting on maintaining neutrality, the US had plans to invade the Brazilian northeast, codenamed Plan Rubber).” (WIKIPEDIA)
"Natal, the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in northeastern Brazil, has a very important strategic global geographic position. This fact made the city host the two main American military bases during the Second World War: the Naval Base and Parnamirim Field – at the time it was the largest US Air Force base on foreign territory.” (WIKIPEDIA)
// Getúlio Vargas flirted with the Fascist ideology even tho, he went to ALLIES' side. 💀
HCs: (don't take them too seriously)
⚠️ Remembering the following content: we are still talking about Hetalia, so my HCs and lore are not absolute truth, but my perception of my oc's participation during the conflict. Even though it has a historical basis behind it. And also, this is historical fiction (ofc, it's hetalia). WWII is an extremely sensitive topic to many. I ask for caution, I will be careful with what I have to say.
— Alfred used his charm and charisma to make Mayara fight alongside him (Good Neighbor Policy). What worked and they formed an alliance based on a mutual exchange of interests.
— Mayara had developed a strange feeling that intensified for Alfred (something between admiration and wanting to be like him, a complex feeling, which perhaps was confused with platonic love and which sought certain privileges in that alliance), even if she was reluctant to give end her neutral stance towards the conflict (something similar to what happened in WWI). She would later do this after torpedoing of vessels by German and Italian submarines, retaliation due to Brazil's accession to the Atlantic Charter; thus, she broke ties with the AXIS and declared war on Italy and Germany.
— In my universe, Mayara also served as a nurse, and spent most of her time with Alfred, often tending to his wounds. Sometimes just chitchatting together or learning about militarism and things like that. He trained her. He was the one who supported her.
— I changed my conception of another topic, which was May's direct participation on the battlefield. I think that Mayara, in addition to serving as a nurse, also fought on the front line when necessary (due to the fact that she was the representative of Brazil) and needed to be on the front line. In my former HC she didn't go to the front. (I disagree with the 2021 me xd).
— I don't believe that Alfred reciprocated any kind of feelings for May. She was an important piece for him, and so he courted her, to secure a new ally. It was a benefits relationship.
— Besides Alfred. There were FEW times where dialogues with England took place, this was due to the participation of Anglo-Brazilians on the English side (if I'm not wrong, in the area of aviation, but I need to delve deeper into the topic). An almost tiny interaction compared to the prevalence of Alfred's actions, which was immensely greater and also generated impacts.
PS: I don't ship BrAme/AmeBra, they are just friends. However, Mayara, as I said, had strange feelings for him at some moments in history (I was reading an article about diplomacy 🇧🇷-🇺🇸, I realized that Brazil had a greater interest in getting closer to the USA for economic and regional power, that is, an admiration that aimed for benefits/just as the US aimed for strategic support/Mayara would support Alfred in anything, as she thought she would get support in return).
I used the word "courtship" as it was stated in this old History book (which I no longer have). Alfred... used his charm against May. Lol.
Evidence of a strange obsession with Alfred:
Meet the United States of Brazil:
(I showed this damn flag to my dad he got disgusted lmfao)

Hi, I've been having the biggest Hetalia brainrot ever...
Sooo, even if you aren't taking uh.. Recommendations or things, I just wanna swoosh this idea into your mind just incase you feel like writing Hetalia content...
Just a warning that this is like a reader x Hetalia post, so, just be warned.
The Allies or Axis are getting frisky with the reader.. And suddenly the reader like pushes them away and says 'We can't, I didn't shave.'
You get it? My brainrot? Yeah...
You don't have to write this I'm embarrassed to even request it it's stupid I know
Hello! No need to be embarrassed about sending this in. I don't mind in the slightest. I think we've all had these types of what ifs. I decided to put them on a scale since I personally can't see any of them really caring about extra hair. I hope you like what I've written for you. 💜💜
CW: highly suggestive, gn!reader, fluff, headcanons/scenarios
Remains confident
France: Whether or not you shaved wouldn’t make a difference to him. He adored you either way. Showering you with compliments and affection was a given, but it was amplified when you lacked confidence. Besides, this could lead to a more intimate setting. If you let him, he’d like to do it for you.
Italy: He wasn’t sure what the big deal was. The two of you had already seen each other’s bodies, so how would a bit of extra hair change anything? He reassured you, telling you how beautiful you were and laid soft kisses on you to help ease your embarrassment.
Russia: A twinge of protectiveness came over him when he saw your flushed cheeks. Smiling at you sweetly, he went to hold you. He whispered how lovely you were and that such trivial things wouldn’t change how he saw you. Light touches and soft kisses accompanied his kind words.
America: Blinking at you, he kind of cocked his head. He wondered where this shyness was coming from but didn’t want to rock the boat by asking about it. There was a lot of reassurance that he didn’t care and that you were desirable either way.
China: Not having realized something like that would make you so cautious to proceed, he was kind of taken aback. He didn’t see a reason to be put off by something as natural as body hair, but your reluctance made him feel oddly nervous. Explaining to you how none of that should matter was all he could really think of to help ease your worries.
Germany: He couldn’t care less about you not having shaved. There were countless times when he wasn’t exactly trimmed and “ready” for you, but your embarrassment was making it hard to convince you and had him second guessing himself.
England: He was easy to fluster and when he felt like he was the one to have brought on this discomfort, he felt just a bit ashamed of himself. Wanting to soothe your worries, he gently rubbed your leg and called you pet names as he tried his hardest to make you feel better.
Canada: A hue spread across his face and he hesitated. There was a soft apology for having accidentally embarrassed you. He wanted to be close to you though, so he cuddled you and told you how lovely you were in hopes of easing your self-conscious woes.
Japan: Your flushed expression made him recoil and immediately apologize. He didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. Even if he didn’t mind the extra hair, your discomfort spread to him, meaning he was more inclined to wait patiently until you decided you were ready for him..
Your embarrassment wears off on them

putting this here and leaving for the time being again fr
mid show but with potential = passionate fandom (or shows with too many characters so nobody is explored super in deep)
The Draw of the Hetalia Fandom (and Why You Can Never Leave)
From the perspective of a fan of (technically) twelve years or so.
Something occurred to me a while back, and I wanted to share it to get other people's thoughts. I'll try to add funny pictures and gifs to break up the wall of text so it won't be as exhausting to read.
I made a post the other day about how the Hetalia fandom always draws you back in. This was, of course, based on the joke about how you can never really leave the Hetalia fandom. A joke you can find virtually everywhere you look in fan spaces online.
But this begs the question. Why? Why can't you ever truly leave the Hetalia fandom? What is it about this fandom that consistently draws you back in?
And note that people don't talk about Hetalia itself, but rather its fandom. You could stop watching the show or reading the comics for years, but the fandom is what won't fully leave you be.
(The Hetalia fandom every time you check to see if it's dead yet).
One answer I've heard has to do with the phenomenon known as Associative Memory, where you can learn and remember the relationship between unrelated items.
For example, you watch Hetalia, a series about the countries of the world personified as anime characters. These characters have their own personalities, traits, quirks, etc. And the more you watch the show and get into the fandom, the more you start to associate these things with one another.
For instance, someone can say the word Italy, and I'll start thinking about Feliciano Vargas. Or someone could say the name Matthew Williams, and I automatically associate that with Canada. Or I could see bushy eyebrows and immediately start thinking of APH England. Heck, someone starts talking about Vikings and my thoughts almost always go to the Viking Trio of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. I could go on, but you get the idea.
And there's also the fact that we live in a world full of the countries that the show has personified characters of, which would in turn likely remind you of Hetalia.
But there's something more here going on. I've thought about it for a long while, and I think I've realized one of the biggest reasons why you can't fully leave the fandom.
It's because of how versatile the characters of the series can be in fan content. Allow me to explain.
(Me preparing to explain to everyone the epiphany that came to me one dark, stormy night).
Hetalia is a series with literally no plot. Like, zero. Some episodes may impact each other, but the overall series is episodic in nature. The only episodes you'd have to watch in order would be the ones going over the miniature love story between Chibitalia and HRE. And then there's the sequence of episodes going over the Industrial Revolution in season seven, and then the sequence of episodes explaining the relationship between Czechia and Slovakia. But that's it. And the Industrial Revolution and Czechia and Slovakia episodes aired in the latter seasons, long after the fandom was already very big and well established.
The episodes are largely adaptations from the original webcomic and thus are all a bunch of skits haphazardly thrown together. So I'll reiterate what I said earlier; there is no real, canonical plot to Hetalia. There are canon events and facts about canon characters, but seeing as the show is largely skits, they aren't tied down to any real narrative.
(The Hetalia fandom whenever they're given a piece of canon they don't like).
This leaves a lot of room for headcanons. Which leads to fans sharing their headcanons online. And when headcanons get super popular, they become fanon. And when a piece of fanon gets super popular, where it finds itself getting mingled with fanart, fanfiction, and even fan theories, you'll have people who start to confuse it with actual canon. There's really a lot to be said for the wild fanon of Hetalia, but I'll get to that another day. I need to turn the focus back onto the characters themselves.
I'm just gonna put it out there. The Hetalia characters are largely one-note. This isn't to say there isn't some depth to a few of the characters, but these characters are largely the epitome of "what you see is what you get." Especially in the early days of the series. The characters all have a set of straightforward, basic character traits, with their interpersonal relationships often being displayed in a very simplistic manner.
For example, Italy is a pasta-loving coward who's a massive flirt. Germany is strict and authoritative with a no-nonsense attitude. Japan is quiet and soft-spoken, only speaking up when he feels the need. America is a bombastic dork with a hero complex. England is an arrogant stick in the mud. France is a hopeless romantic who flirts with anything that has a pulse.
(Me taking a moment to pause and push away the cringy middle school memories of me shamelessly fangirling in class).
And as I said, their relationships are typically portrayed as simplistic as well. Italy annoys Germany, but Germany doesn't want to get rid of him because he's one of his only friends. England and France hate each other. America is that hyper-extroverted friend trying to get his introverted friend, Japan, out of his shell. Switzerland and Lichtenstein have a sweet sibling dynamic. And Prussia and Austria are portrayed as old friends who like to antagonize one another.
Because of the way the characters and their interpersonal relationships are written, this also lends them open to a lot of headcanons and eventual fanon. Not to mention that most of the characters have canon, human names. So if you want to use these characters in a fanfiction, particularly one where you don't want to depict them as countries (which is most fanfics), you have names at the ready that you can use.
And because of the simple way the characters are written, you can potentially write or portray these characters however you want in fanwork without too many people complaining that someone "isn't in character." There is so much room for your own interpretations of the characters. As long as you keep some of their basic personality traits from the series intact, you can portray the characters however you want. Especially because there's no real canonical storyline to drag them down. Because of the lack of canon storyline, you don't have to worry about fanworks being canon-compliant, canon-divergent, or canon-adjacent.
(Fanfic writers when they realize canon cannot stop them from creating whatever they want).
Do you want to portray Romano as the notorious mafia boss, Lovino Vargas, in the 1930s? Go ahead. As long as you can keep some of his cowardly and stubborn nature intact, you can do what you want with little trouble.
Do you want to portray England as the infamous pirate, Arthur Kirkland, in the 17th century? As long as you maintain his disdain for France, have at it!
Do you want to write a college AU with all of the characters present? As long as you keep in mind their personalities and have a basic understanding of their interpersonal relationships, have fun!
Now you're probably sitting there thinking, "Big deal, people can create all kinds of fanwork, regardless of what its content is, or what property it's for. What makes the Hetalia fandom so special?"
It's special because, since Hetalia is a series with almost zero canonical storylines, and the characters are portrayed in such a simplistic way, both of which lend their way to boatloads of headcanons and fanon, as well as small scraps of canon information that we can choose to either ignore or elaborate like crazy on...
Hetalia is a freaking goldmine for creating all kinds of fan content.
(Hetalians when creating the 2p! variations of the characters, probably).
So much fan content is out there. From creepypastas, to Hetaoni, Dreamtalia, the 2p! characters, historically accurate AU's, school AU's, and so, so much more. All because the canon is just loose enough to allow all kinds of fan content to be created and not seem too far off from the series or characters.
And that fan content ends up being way, way more fun than the actual series itself! Don't get me wrong, I still love the show, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't (or currently don't) have a freaking blast every time I engage with fan content. The creativity is insane, and the fanon is even more fun and entertaining.
The reason you cannot fully leave the Hetalia fandom isn't just because of Associative Memory, but because of the immense amount of fan content and fanon where, because of the nature of the series, you can do, write, draw, and create whatever you want. You can project onto these characters and their stories and interpret them to your own personal tastes. And you know what? That's a heck of a lot of fun.
And there you go, that's my two cents.

Okay hot take but I HATE the latest drawings hima released. The artstyle looks a little too much like those anime drawings attempting to be realistic and it's just uncanny. Hima can draw whatever he wants ofc. Everyone in the comments on posts about them is like "oh they're human now they can be happy!" and it's like. They're fictional, idc if they're happy, I want ME to be happy. And since I like angst and history, that means using the history of the Nations and doing deep dives into the past. Making them just human takes the fun out of Hetalia and the point of the series in general.
I was also exposed to Hetalia when I was in early high school and I'm just now planning to go to school again to focus on history and political science. People can make human AUs all they want, but Hetalia as a way of leading me deeper into history and how people across time interact and tracing it to modern issues is extremely important to me. Your college or coffee shop AUs will always be there, but the original concept as a whole should stay the same. There is endless content to be found by just opening a history book, and as much as I like the Gangstalia arc (mainly b/c everyone is hot lmao) I don't want it to move Hetalia into a more human-centric direction.
hot take over. Definitely want to know other thoughts about this because so far (in my limited dashboard on tumblr) I haven't seen anyone else with this opinion lol.
Anon omg,,, *holds out my hand to you like an anime girl* Let's make heavy-angst historical scenarios for Hetalia together <3
I am quite literally of the exact same opinion when it comes to Hetalia like,, in my 10/11 years of being a fan of Hetalia I have never once had the desire for a human AU, the whole appeal is that these characters are personifications of real nations lmaooo.
Hot take tho, the take this fandom needs but not the one is deserves.
#vulp asks#tbh fair take on the hima illustrations as well#For a long time now I've been separated from the source material so tbqhhhh i dont rlly mind whatever modern hetalia content comes out#bc ik it will never be the historical drama i desire#for that i must use my own two hands !#hehe anyway ty for sending ur hot take 10/10 pls send more#best of luck back in school btw!

Check out our preemptive FAQ here!
Without further ado, here are the answers to your questions from the interest check:
☆ I would like to apply to be an art mod, but my Hetalia fanwork is a bit old and not up to date with my current skill level? Can I submit some non-Hetalia fanwork for my mod portfolio?
If this is the case, submit any work you're proud of, regardless of its relevancy to Hetalia!
☆ What does "spread" and "page" mean?
☆ Where do I sign up?
Contributor applications will be opening July 1, 2024. We’ll make a post with the link to the contributor apps at 3PM EST on July 1, but you’ll also be able to find a link to the apps on our Carrd when the time comes! Right now the button on our Carrd is a placeholder, but if you press it now, you’ll be rewarded with a cool and funky video :]
☆ Will page size/formatting guidelines be given?
Yes! At the moment, there are placeholder measurements in our info-doc. Proper formatting will be finalized before contributor apps open once we’ve onboarded our formatting mods and discussed what sizes are best!
☆ Can my contribution include multiple HetaGirls?
YES!!! Let them interact!
☆ Are ships allowed?
Yes! As of right now, our only restrictions are no Belarus x Ukraine and no NSFW content.
☆ How many contributors will you accept to the zine?
At the moment, we’re a bit unsure! This is both Soph and Arson’s first time hosting a zine so we don’t want to bite off more than we can chew. As of right now, we may accept up to ~30 visual contributors and ~10 writing contributors, but those are estimates. We’ve gotten a ton of support for this zine, but we need to find our footing first! Ultimately, the final number of contributors will depend on what the mod team feels they can handle and how many applications we get!
☆ Why are you putting limits onto how Nyotalia characters can appear in the zine?
This zine originally came to be with the canon women in mind. We want the zine to focus on Ancient Egypt, Belarus, Belgium, Czechia, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Seychelles, Taiwan, Ukraine, Vietnam, and Wy, as much of their canon material treats them as supporting roles to the male characters. We additionally would love to see submissions for Ancient Greece, Kenya, and Zimbabwe!
The Nyotalia characters are understandably very popular because they're a different take on the main cast. While we also love Nyotalia, we worry that very popular characters, like the main 8, will overshadow the characters we created this zine for in the first place. Nyotalia women are allowed in supporting roles because it would understandably be a little difficult for the writers if they were only limited to a specific set of 12-17 characters.
Some examples of work featuring Nyotalia characters would be:
A frying pangle fic where Hungary interacts with Nyo!Austria and/or Nyo!Prussia
A group illustration centering Vietnam’s interactions with Nyotalia ASEAN
An AmeBela illustration where Belarus interacts with Nyo!America
Some exceptions may be allowed on a case by case basis.
TLDR: You can draw Nyotalia women so long as they play a supporting role to one of the canon ladies.
☆ How many OCs will be allowed?
It depends on how many applications we receive! So long as they're a nation & aren't already canon to Hetalia, it's fair game. We want to see ladies from all over the globe!
☆ Why do you want more than one pitch?
We don't want to force people to make work they're disinterested in, but we also don't want there to be a disproportionate amount of material for one girl over another. As of right now, Hungary is in the most demand with 69.2% of responses, but Wy (34.6%) and Monaco (42.3%) have the least amount! We want to encourage more work for the more neglected ladies!
☆ Can I make more than one submission?
As of right now, yes! So long as everyone isn't doing more than one piece and if the contributor thinks they can handle two pieces during the time frame, we wanna see those HetaGirls!
More on this to come when acceptances roll out and we start working on pitches...
Got more questions? Submit them to our inbox!
Thank you all for the love and support you've shown the zine thus far!

I don't know if you awnsered this or not. But I seen you talk to Unofficial Estonia about how Estonia is portrayed in Hetalia/ the fandom. Do you think how the fandom/Hima portray him nowadays is better? I know there is still some poor taste jokes/ takes/ art that are made by like 14 year olds about Estonia and Russia in the fandom. But do you think his over all portal is better?
By the way I do love your blog and rewrites of cannon. I love learning about other countries and their view of the world.
Oh yeah, me and some of the people behind that blog have spoken before about matters such as how Estonia is treated by the Hetalia fandom and worked together on a few occasions.
I do personally think Himaruya has improved a bit when it comes to his treatment of Estonia. Sure, he still makes the Baltics mostly be about the whole "lil guys next to Russia how scawy" which if you know the Baltic countries and people irl then you know we aren't like the cowards Himaruya has written hah.
What I've noticed in recent times with some of the content I've seen (though I definitely need to catch up) is that Himaruya is less focused about the whole Nordic thing with Estonia, he either has learned that the joke is very outdated and based on something very small, or he decided that he's beat that joke like a dead horse enough times now and found there to be much more that he can do.
I appreciate more Baltic content and Estonia and Finland content we've seen, exploring more about Estonia's relationship with these countries. I especially am glad there's more of Estonia just chilling as a Baltic, considering Hima's awful writing has created a side of the fandom that strongly believe the Baltics are a very divided and uncaring of each other trio with nothing holding them together.
So I do think things have improved, even a little. Now let's hope the rest of the fandom picks up on that too. Though I do think for the most part the Baltic side of the fandom has moved on with only a few individuals here and there having those outdated views on us. I also hope the Nordic fans side of the fandom has less people who sit in that outdated bubble too. I've noticed that the Nordic side of the fandom has a lil more of the people who like to target Estonia specifically, but again only some people here and there with majority either just not giving Estonia any attention or being neutral/respectful about it. Though I do think they too are missing out on some great history by ignoring Estonia, especially Sweden and Denmark fans.
#hetalia#hetalia baltics#hetalia nordics#hws estonia#hws baltics#hws nordics#hws NB8#hws nordic-baltic 8#do we still use the aph tag or are we only on hws tags now?#i sure hope that's the case

How do you deal with the toxicity in the fandom? It's getting hard to be here.
Yeah a lot of people suck. I just don't visit tags at all anymore. I'm going to be honest I haven't since some time last year. I follow people that I like and I know are not drama whores and I get my reblog content from them ethically. I block anyone I see making call out posts or stupid call to actions against people. Or shoving current SERIOUS real life politics into Hetalia (a major peeve of mine. and emphasis on serious because of course jokes on funny current events are fine but it's the serious stuff that really sets a fire in me. Like the current wars for example.) You just gotta do what you gotta do to keep your mental health good tbh. I've noticed some people leaving lately due to people not minding their own business and harassing others, people that I actually liked and that's really annoying. I just don't understand why some people in this fandom have to be so vindictive and insufferable it's sad honestly. Do they not get tired? They have to because listening to some of these people is EXAUSTING! So many people on the outside hate the Hetalia fandom for what some weirdos did 10ish years ago. I don't know why some people feel the need to start drama and fights for NOTHING. That being said if you're a Hetalia blog that is chill and does not start drama reblog this post and I'll consider following you because I need more content to reblog. & or if you are a chill person and like other chill people who enjoy Hetalia & music join my discord maybe? I share my AI covers there and people talk when a conversation comes up but it's not just non stop text walls like some other servers where it's hard to get a word in edge wise. It's pretty small and relaxed. You can share your art, or own AI covers & or au's or fic ideas. No drama is allowed. My discord if anyone is interested in it:

Here's a spicy opinion for you, sort of related to that previous reblog:
That thing where something is super popular and then eventually becomes cringe and the Most Hated thing and everyone is deeply morally opposed to it for [reasons]? That is actually where I think most people's problem with Hetalia stems from, rather than from an actual good faith objection to any of the content within the canon.
I've talked a little bit before about how a lot of the objections I see to Hetalia and its fandom are kind of weirdly nonspecific or really outdated or just factually incorrect in a way that suggests that the critic's only real familiarity with it is from their memories of other people's complaints, but I was thinking a little bit about the heyday of the fandom and what the atmosphere was like at that time and how that relates --
It's easy to forget (or to not have been old enough to be present within fandom spaces then, as the case may be), but Hetalia was wildly fucking popular in its time, rivaled in many places at that specific time only by Homestuck... And people in general hated Homestuck to just about the same degree they hated Hetalia, and in fact did so to the point that the fandoms went from "rivals" to building a weird little bond of solidarity over being The Worst.
I'm not saying there aren't or weren't valid reasons to dislike Homestuck canon or the fandom, but what I am saying is that I'm incredibly fucking skeptical of the idea that the general backlash against Hetalia comes or came from a sincerely held belief that it is an irredeemable pile of nazi fujoshit, when I saw a very similar level of venom for people who wore gray body paint at cons at about the same time.
I know I just said a few days ago I hated that people feel the need to constantly qualify their comments to preempt arguments but I'm gonna do it now anyway: This is not to say that I don't think there are valid objections to be raised about Hetalia canon or the fandom and that people can't take real issue with it. I absolutely do, and if you'd like to know more I invite you to come chat with some of us here, because nobody tears up the shit parts of a canon and fandom like people who are really really into it. (So f you come in here to tell me all the totally reasonable reasons you hate it i will bite you because I already fucking said.)
But I am saying that I think a certain amount of people who have to loudly tell everyone how gross they think it is every time it comes up (or who do so totally unprompted) are not doing it out of a real deep sense of moral concern but either out of a need to justify their cringe reaction to it and to be seen doing so, or because they've seen other people doing it and also want to be seen doing so so that people know they don't enjoy the Bad thing and feel an appropriate level of scorn for those who do.
#hetaposting#hetalia#I was never into Homestuck but at one point literally all of my friends were#and BOY HOWDY were people fucking mean about homestuck#also using fujoshit ironically obviously as i am and will continue to be A Fan#of fujoshit

Hetalia Human Names
NOTE: This is my personal interpretation and the names may diverge from canon and established fanon. Also I might update this every so often to make it more accurate, depending on the information I find.
Table of Contents
The Main Characters
Western Europe
Northern Europe
Eastern Europe
Southern Europe
Western Asia
South Asia
East Asia
Southeast Asia
Oceania
Micronations
Former nations
The Main Characters
Italy Veneziano: Feliciano Vergano
I chose the name Vergano instead as it keeps the essense of the original surname, but is actually Italian.
Italy Romano: Lovino Vergano
Germany: Ludwig Beilschmidt
Japan: Kiku Honda
Prussia: Gilbert Beilschmidt
America: Alfred Franklin Jones
I like the headcanon of his middle name being "Freedom", but Franklin is my personal favourite.
England: Arthur James Kirkland
I came across this in a fic a while back and never looked back. This man needs a middle name.
France: Francis Bonnefoy
Russia: Ivan Braginsky
China: Yao Wang
Canada: Matthew Williams
Western Europe
Austria: Roderich Edelstein
Belgium: Laura Janssens
Liechtenstein: Erika Vogel
Luxembourg: Henri Janssens
I've also used the name Gabriel before, but it doesn't seem to be used much in Luxembourg, so Henri would be more fitting.
Monaco: Louise Bonnefoy
The name Louise and it's masculine variant, Louis, appear a few times in the Monaguesque royal family.
Netherlands: Willem Janssens
Willem appears a few times in the Dutch royal family, and it sounds a bit older than other suggested names, which reflects his age and general vibes imo. I really like this name.
Switzerland: Sebastian Zwingli
Personally I see his name "Basch" as a nickname for Sebastian. It's also easy to adapt to his official languages: Sebastian/Sébastién/Sebastiano. The Romansh variant would be Bistgaun, but the archaic version seems to be Bastgaun, which is more similar to Basch. I headcanon that he goes by the name "Basch" in all languages to make it more cohesive.
Northern Europe
Denmark: Mathias Rasmussen
I'm from Scandinavia myself and I don't know if it's widespread, but I've heard people say "all Danish people are named Rasmus" more than once, so I like to incorporate that into his surname.
Estonia: Eduard Kaasik
Around 50% of Estonia is covered in forest, and one of the most common tree types is birch. Kaasik is a common surname and means "birch forest".
Finland: Timo Väinämöinen
Iceland: Eiríkur Steinsson
Steinsson means "son of Stein (given name meaning stone)",. Also Emil isn't traditionally Icelandic, but it's widely used. Personally though, I prefer the name Eiríkur.
Latvia: Raivis Bērziņš
The surname Galante corresponds with the modern Latvian opera singer Inese Galante, but I couldn't find anything to suggest it's commonly used or that it's Latvian at all. Bērziņš is one of the most used Latvian surnames and means "birch tree", like Estonia's surname. Personally, I don't see the Baltics as siblings, but I think this would be a cute reference.
Also, based on what I read, surnames became common in Latvia around the 19th century, with Bērziņš being one of them. Latvia could have picked up whatever the people around him (Estonia) was using and made it his own.
Lithuania: Tolys Laurinaitis
Norway: Sigurd Bondevik
Sweden: Berwald Oxenstierna
Eastern Europe
Belarus: Natalya Arlovskaya
Bulgaria: Mihail Petrov Isporov
Isporov is the family name and is derived from an alternative name of Asparukh, the first king of the First Bulgarian Empire.
Czech: Tereza Novakova
Hungary: Erzsébet Héderváry
Moldova: Marcel Popescu
Poland: Feliks Łukasiewicz
Romania: Vladislav Popescu
Slovakia: Jozef Novak
Ukraine: Iryna Chernenko
Southern Europe
Greece: Herakles Karpusi
Portugal: João Silva Ferreira
Spain: Antonio Fernandez Carriedo
Western Asia
Cyprus: Stasinos Karpusi
Stasinos was one of the first European poets who wrote the epic poem Cypria.
Turkey: Sadiq Adnan
TRNC: Tarkan Adnan
South Asia
India: Rajesh Thakur
East Asia
Hong Kong: Leon Wang / Wong Kulung
Macau: Chen Wang
South Korea: Im Yong-soo
Taiwan: Mei Lin
Southeast Asia
Thailand: Prasert Chakri
Vietnam: Lien Nguyen
Africa
Cameroon: Emmanuel Mawdo Ahidjo
Many of the most commonly used forenames in Cameroon are of French or English origins, such as Emmanuel.
Mawdo means ‘elder’ in Fulfulde.
Ahidjo refers to the first president of Cameroon.
Egypt: Gupta Muhammad Hassan
Seychelles: Michelle Mancham
Americas
Cuba: Carlos Machado Rodríguez
Oceania
Australia: Daniel Kirkland
New Zealand: Zachary Kirkland
Micronations
Hutt River: Christopher Kirkland
Kugelmugel: Leopold Edelstein
Ladonia: Erland Oxenstierna
Molossia: Jacob Jones
"JJ" :)
Sealand: Peter Kirkland
Seborga: Romeo Vergano
Okay listen. I have no explaination, I just really like this name. Also, if the names of the trio is Peter, Wendy, and Romeo, they're all named after characters from literature. I think that's fun.
Wy: Wendy Kirkland
Former Nations
Ancient Egypt: Neferure
References the only biological child of Hatshepsut.
Ancient Greece: Helene
Ancient Rome: Marcus Valerius Maximus
Marcus is the praenomina (given name) and refers to how Romulus and Remus were said to have been twins of Mars, the god.
Valerius is the nomen gentilicium (hereditary name) and means “to be strong”.
Maximus is the cognomen and means “the greatest”.
Germania: Alaric
Holy Roman Empire: Otto Beilschmidt
Personally I like the idea that HRE and Germany aren't the same person, but share the same body.

i’ve always loved gerfra but been hesitant to like make content because i don’t know how irl german and french people would react to it so i was actually kinda surprised that an actual french person would ship it too. funnily enough i’ve always thought irl people would hate having their nation shipped with another nation even if it was in hetalia.
I mean it was weird at first to me to see my own country getting shipped but now I'm used to it. Plus it's easy to see them as individual before nations as they do have a canon personality (that's influenced by stereotypes yes but is still is it's own, unlike countryballs/humans), so there's that.
Also, why would you be surprised that an actual french person ships it ? We literally created a whole ass tv channel together :') I think it could be insensitive if you played with WWII era gerfra in a certain way but even with that war, most content I see about the ship is mmmh... okay ? (Not in a pejorative way, but idk how to express it in English rip)
But hey, don't hesitate to make gerfra content :D We need to invade hetalia with gerfra niark niark
