I still think about how on my flight to India me and my family where the only white people.
They served us tikka masala (a British curry) and sticky toffee pudding with custard for our main meal.
The family next to me looked very mad and upset.
I think about this daily

Day 2: Saturday 21st September, 2024 [Auckland]
Breakfast: Coffee & a biscuit Lunch: Fish tacos, chips & a glass of wine Dinner: Curry: lamb saag, butter chicken, beef vindaloo & all the trimmings
We woke up early this morning after a shocking sleep and got ready to explore Auckland. We’d booked a 10am tour of the Wētā Workshop Unleashed and were looking forward to seeing some cool Lord of the Rings style miniatures and weaponry. We stopped at a tiny coffee shop called Stolen Summer for a coffee and I was a bit underwhelmed with how average Auckland was - the city centre just looked like a shitty version of Sydney. There were lots of construction sites, a surprisingly large homeless community and lots of chain stores that we have in Melbourne.
The Wētā Workshop was very cool but I was initially a bit disappointed that they did not showcase LOTR items but instead props and sets of 3 made-up films that they had designed just for the exhibition. The films were called Fauna (Horror), Age of the Ever Clan (Fantasy) & Origins (Sci-Fi) and all had very distinct models and characters. We had a lovely tour guide who had a very dry sense of humour but was British and didn’t have a Kiwi accent. My favourite exhibit was the ‘bigature’ fantasy castle that looked like Rivendell from Lord of Rings. The level of detail was mind blowing and the lighting was beautiful.
After our tour it was time for lunch. We walked down to the Viaduct Harbour Waterfront and had lunch at the Reign & Pour for a wine and pub food in the sun. Amara and I shared some tacos and fries, Tim had a burger & Jane had a noodle salad. Everything was a delight.
Amara then went to scope out the ferry situation and we bought a $16NZD return ticket to Devenport via a 15-minute ferry ride. The ride over was beautiful in the sun and I got some beautiful photos of the cityscape. Davenport was a beautiful beachside town bustling with people enjoying the sun. We walked to the Devenport Chocolate Company but didn’t buy anything because an American tourist was taking up all the focus of the one shop assistant. We then walked down the main strip to get ice cream and ate it in the park. The sun was glorious but we were all spent from the travel and decided to head back.
We got the 3:15pm ferry back to Auckland city and then hired a scooter to get back to our apartment. I was a bit apprehensive, as I’d fallen off a scooter in Canberra earlier in the year and badly hurt my hands, but I got back on the horse and didn’t fall off! Woohoo! We stopped at Woolworths for snacks then had a nap when we got home. We snoozed for 45 minutes then had some chips and chats before heading out for dinner.
We headed out for dinner at 7pm and headed to the Indian place a quick walk from the apartment called Spice Club. We all chose a curry (lamb saag, butter chicken & beef vindaloo) with some rice, garlic naan, onion bahji & samosas. A real white-person curry buffet. The food was delicious and we left stuffed! Amara was showing signs of wanting to go home, but Jane wanted to see the nightlife, so we went for a walk back towards the waterfront.
The nightlife was dead and it was a bit disappointing. My first impression of Auckland is that it is very quiet and a bit industrial - not really what I was picturing. It was bananas to me that on a Saturday night, where the All Blacks were playing, the bars were quiet and we walked past multiple closed restaurants. Maybe there was a holiday or cultural observance that we missed?
While we were walking Jane randomly stopped a woman and asked if she was from New Zealand. She said yes and was super happy to recommend a cool bar called Caretaker that had an underground, Speakeasy vibe - exactly what we wanted! We walked down and had to wait 10 mins for a table, so we went to their neighbouring venue Rocketman for a drink - I had a freshly squeezed apple juice with rum, something I wouldn’t usually pair, and it was delicious! We got called 15 mins later and went down to the speakeasy where there was no menu, but the waiter asked what kind of drink we usually liked and then made something for us. Neil was a gun and made me a “risky business” with gin, orange & bitters. It was delicious, but very sweet. Amara was researching karaoke bars, but I hit a wall and suggested we go home instead. There was a curfew for scooters, so we walked home (4 mins) then shared pictures from our day and then hit the hay.
I am SO excited to go to Hobbiton tomorrow!!!!

The Warm Reviews Continue To Flood In ForManthan’s “Authentic” And “Stellar” Indian Culinary Experience - Manthan Mayfair
Here at Manthan, we certainly like to talk up all the things that make our stylish Maddox Street eatery so special. However, we also know that it’s probably not only us you would like to hear from before making the decision to dine with us.
That’s why it may interest you to read two recent reviews of the experience provided by our high-end Indian restaurant. It is fair to say the critics were enamoured of our commitment to, and execution of, gastronomic innovation across a wide range of quintessentially Indian, street-food-style dishes.
So, what did some of the most discerning of London’s professional diners have to say? Let’s take a look.
Home-style Indian food that “doesn’t disappoint”
In its recent rundown of the UK capital’s most romantic restaurants, the premium British food magazine Olive chose to feature Manthan on the strength of our “quality Indian street food in a romantic setting”.
The magazine stated that “with a pedigree like chef RohitGhai’s” – referring to our Michelin-starred chef – “expectations of the food at his new Mayfair restaurant are high – and it doesn’t disappoint.”
Olive was complimentary of the “romantic” vibe of our establishment, describing the dining room as “long and wood-panelled, adorned with beautiful paintings of exotic flowers. Even at lunchtime it feels romantic, and the sharing dishes reflect that vibe.”
Working through both ourGalikakhana (street food) and Rassedar (curries) sections, the magazine had plenty of praise for dishes ranging from our “plump and tender” ghati masala prawns and jackfruit tacos that it described as “a revelation”, to – on the dessert menu – “the Classic Trip of sweet laddoo, sticky gulabjamun and creamy srikhand.”

“I rated Manthan very highly”
Looking over to the TripReporter website, writer Andy Mossackwas similarly forthcoming in his approval of the Manthan dining experience.
Describing our venue itself as a “narrow but deep townhouse swathed in gold and dark wood with plenty of soft banquette seating and wall art”, Mossack characterised the ghati masala prawns as “a very tasty starter”, and the ram laddoo as “very impressive”.
The cafrealmachhi, meanwhile, was hailed as “an absolute banger of a dish” with its sea bass accompanied by Goan spices and a burnt tomato. As for the artichoke with white turmeric and a strawberry jus, Mossack saluted it as “another stellar display”. The sauce of fenugreek, tomato, and Kashmiri chilli in which the chicken tikka masala was bathed was also described as “very moreish”.
The TripReporter writer concluded: “I rated Manthan very highly for not only Ghai’s authentic culinary wizardry but also for showing how you can eat very well in Mayfair without slapping on a stellar price point.”
Now, it’s your turn to experience Manthan
Have the excited and enthused words of the professionals got you curious about how we would rate among your own favourite places to eat in Mayfair, or even in London as a whole?
If so, you would be very welcome to make a reservation with us for a time that suits you and your visiting party, so that you can immerse yourself in the Manthan magic resulting from the hard work, skills, and imaginations of Rohit and his business partner AbhishakeSangwan. We would be delighted to see you!

Alright intriguing results but,
The lot who chose Base British/Harry Hadden-Paton...... 100%.... wrong.
Those very few who chose Base American/Jon Curry...... 50%.... right.
The 12% who chose None of the Above are technically the most correct. He has no accent, and while it's Jon Curry in the game, I actually claim Kevin Kline as his canon voice. You may be more familiar with him as Tulio in Road to Eldorado, Pheobus in Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame or the Pirate King in Pirates of Penzance.
This was interesting though! I love to subvert expectations 😂
I'm curious to know, if those of you who are familiar with him:
don't expect to get a lot of answers, but I'd like to know! I DO have a canon voice for him, but I won't say what/who it is until the poll is over 😉

For your little Send Me A Character thing and you already know who it is... OVERLORD!!!
Tumblr media
you know me so well. and/or it’s not too hard to tell. probably the latter tbh bdhsbdbdbfbddv
Tumblr media
Answers below cut!
First impression: Funny thing is that I had two first impressions of Overlord: one before I knew what IDW was, and the other after I did but before I read MTMTE and LSOTW. My very first impression was through a yt video and I was honestly really unimpressed. Like, wow nice character design, that looks so dull and boring! Where are the cool vehicle parts? Smh. I also heard that Overlord was supposed to be this super scary and murderous bot, but I never did research and just thought that that still meant he was probably a boring villain. Like, ANY villain can be touted as super scary and murderous, that doesn’t mean they’re actually good. But after I discovered what IDW was, and read a few things about OL (including fics and comic dubs that helped introduce me to his character), I immediately took everything back. Like OKAY, never mind, this guy sounds AWESOME. As someone who loves villains, I had a feeling he was right up my alley.
Impression now: Gotta be one of, if not my most favorite Transformers villain ever. While I'm unsure if he's in my top five favorite transformers characters, he's definitely in an echelon on his own, unbound by such a simple list. Overlord makes me inexplicably happy. He's a horrible, horrible person, and does horrible, horrible things, but he's fun. He's aside from almost every other TF villain; he doesn't need a sad backstory or heaping dumps of complexity to himself. He practically chose to be irredeemable and henceforth revels in it. Of course he has some things that you can feel bad for, but compared to other TF villains? There's not much. My personal lack of sympathy for him is what makes him all the more enjoyable to follow. Not to mention, he's a lot of fun to draw; I thought his design was lame at first, but it's quickly become one of my favorites. It's also easy and fun to draw, and the color choices are (at least in IDW's case) bright and colorful and fit my personal tastes! Overlord is just someone I love to hate. Every moment with him is as thrilling as it is terrifying. Again: fun. I could honestly break down into a novel on why I like him so much but that's for another day...
Favorite moment: I can't choose but honestly I really liked it when he burst through his restraints on the lost light. Not only was that shot amazing, but his reasoning was token to his character: he could've broken free at any time, but he didn't feel like it until he learned that Megatron was alive. What a freakin DRAMA QUEEN. I also liked his dumb quarrel with Tarn and their back and forth about who Megatron likes more.
Idea for a story: Overlord deserves to be the main villain of SOME transformers media. I have a couple of story ideas myself but since they're actually headcanon-fics, I couldn't get into detail about them here. But one of them is the entirety of Super God Masterforce but remade for the modern day, which I've been thinking of sharing sometime soon... [but also I want a whole spinoff of MTMTE where it's him, Tarn and the DJD, and Deathsaurus's crew lost on the other side of space, and they have to tolerate each other and be a dysfunctional family while they find their way back. Also another story with Overlord as Megan trying to understand wtf human life is like on his mission to be a politician. I have a lot of thoughts as you can see,,,]
Unpopular opinion: I really don't like that southern accent on him. They should've made Patrick Seitz use his Dio voice. TBH my voice claim for him is Tim Curry with like, the slightest of a british accent. So like the lord of darkness from Legend but a little less growly. Also why do people ship Overpan/Overmax it's really uncomfortable...
Favorite relationship: Him and Tarn. They're so chaotic and whiny, and it's fun to watch them bicker like children. Good lord put them in day care
Favorite headcanon: I did like this whole thing for PWT where I explained through a meme why Overlord was worthy of the Unicron matrix like an anti-prime, and I am STILL clinging on to it as part of my personal canon. Also, I feel like if Overlord hadn't gone the way of a gladiator, he would've used his perfect frame and his theatrics to be an actor or someone in whatever the Cybertronian equivalent of the beauty/modeling industry is

hii its bougie <3 if you're still taking hc requests, i was wondering if you'd have thoughts on something that's been on my mind for a while. i was interested in the nuance to english culture due to regional differences. eg.,dinner being called "tea" in the north of england, rugby being more popular in the south, the difference in how scones with jam and cream are enjoyed in Devon and Cornwall?? or how certain english accents are perceived as... "less attractive" i guess (the black country accents are unpopular apparently?) -- you'd probably know more about these particularities than me ;u;
i was wondering how these cultural differences might map onto hws England's character, and how they might influence his attitudes and behaviours. because there's such a clearly defined stereotype of the english that i think shape people's expectations of what the english are like, i usually think that Arthur usually consciously acts according to what counts as positive interpretations of himself. however, i love nuanced and somewhat subversive interpretations of his character, and am very curious if you might have any ideas on how these kind of internal regional differences might shape him.
--------------------
Bougieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee <3
I’m not gonna lie this sent me down a RABBIT HOLE of thoughts, so hang on tight cos we're gonna get messy.
Accents:
Let’s start with my personal favourite, so excuse me whilst I geek out for a second. I’ve gone into this area already in this headcanon, but I personally see England being a very proud little dragon regarding English accents, those both native and non-native to the British Isles. Focusing just on accents within England for this post, the way Arthur himself sees them, (regarding class and general preference), comes a lot down to how I see him feeling about language and the unification of England in general.
England is a tiny country. It’s really teeny, compared to some, and yet holds an incredible number of regional accents and dialects (from digging about the internet for a good source, I keep finding numbers ranging from 37 to 43). There are a number of reasons for this, but the one that I love the most is that accents are influenced by the previous/ influential other languages spoken in a given area. Accents on the East of England are more influenced by Viking invaders, both phonologically and via the dialectal words used, and accents/ dialects in the West are more influenced by Welsh, for example.
Accents and dialects tell the history of a place, all who ever came there and influenced it to some degree. The map of English accents is a patchwork quilt of old cultures and people now lost to time, but their ways of speaking have been preserved in the modern tongue. The old English kingdoms might now be mere counties- Kent, Essex, Sussex, East Anglia, etc- they may not have their own influence or language these days as they used to, but their old ways have been imprinted on their people of today whether they know it or not and they carry pieces of the past in their words and how they speak them. Older speakers of the Northern English dialects liek the Yorkshire dialect still use ‘thou/thee’ where this has fallen out in other areas, the Midlands and parts of the South-East still keep the ‘-n’ ending for possessive pronouns (‘yourn’ instead of ‘yours’, ‘ourn’ instead of ‘ours’), and there’s even some linguistic research into how Brittonic, the ancestor of Modern Welsh, influenced English structure and phonology (for references, see notes at the end).
Back to England the person (to contain myself slightly), his regional accents are a story of himself, his history being kept alive in all of its variety every day. He doesn’t hold a classist view of a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ accent because he knows why they’re all there- what languages and people influenced them and how these events affected him- the older generations now lost and forgotten being kept alive in the smallest of phonemes.
Every dialect, every accent, and every language tells the story of a people, from the smallest phonological marker right up to a language as a whole and England takes comfort and pride in his dialects and accents’ longevity and variety. He is as much of the North as he is the South, as much of the East as the West and a patchwork man born of patchwork cultures it makes no sense for him to favour one particular accent over another.
That being said, he is aware that there is a common cultural stance on accents as well as an opinion regarding ‘ugly’ ones, ‘common’ ones, and ‘classy’ ones, but he himself doesn’t partake in these ideas. I like to think that a nation takes on the speech of the people and the area they’re in, matching the person they speak to or the area they visit to relate to their people. So, for me a Chav Arthur exists as much as a Brummie one does, or a Scouser, or a Geordie, or a Cockney. They’re all English, and thus they’re all a part of him.
Class
I have to include this one, if only to touch on it lightly regarding accents and dialects. Class does influence which words you speak, arguably just as much as which accent (this is known as a sociolect). Although I said that England adopts the accent of whatever area he’s in, or whomever he’s talking to if they’re English, the class people are will also affect which words he choses to use.
Here’s a short example from here:
'It is pudding for the upper class. Dessert is sometimes used by upper middles, but afters and sweets very clearly put you below stairs.'
Have some more!
Upper class: Spectacles, Lavatory or loo, Die, Napkin, Sofa
Middle class: Glasses, Toilet , Pass on, Serviette, Settee or couch
(Working class is a mix but harder to find sources for).
This is where England treads a fine line. It could be that he again adopts more of a class lexicon regarding who he is speaking to, matching his people word for word. However, England is not unaware of the affects of class, regardless of how he himself feels, and also although class snobbery and divide frustrate him, he cannot deny using this understanding to benefit himself, which also conforms to how his own people behave. (I myself have, many times, diluted and filtered my speech to be seen as ‘better’).
Want to be seen as more reliable and powerful? Want to be taken more seriously? RP and Estuary English (a lot more so these days), hold undeniable sway and England is not above adopting a manner of speaking to come across ‘better’ or more polite, or a more ‘common’ accent to fit in with the working classes. I think of England as leaning more towards a working-class mindset- he’s very hands on, very up for and used to manual labour and this particular English class has always made up the bulk of his population. It makes no sense for a nation, who represents all of their people, to have a snide view or a preference for a particular group and England as a person I see is someone who does not enjoy the foppery and false airs of aristocracy.
That being said, England is an intelligent man. He knows how to work a room and use a crowd to his advantage, knows what must be done and what he needs to do to achieve a goal and if this entails courting the upper classes for a time then he will do so. He’s adepts at switching himself like a chameleon, blending his behaviours, accent, and dialect to match who he’s talking to to achieve a goal or to fit in with someone’s perception of him, or to gain influence or prestige. He also doesn’t hate his upper classes- they are of him too, and the middle and working class have their own prejudices and ideas against the others. But he doesn’t adopt a stereotypical distain of lower classes because to him, it really doesn’t make much sense.
Abroad, this need to cultivate a particular perception defiantly comes under greater pressure. RP and Estuary English are more well know, more heard and taught, and more recognisably ‘British’, and so these are what he uses when speaking English to other nations or foreigners, either wanting to uphold an image of himself (more so in the Victorian/ Edwardian period than nowadays) or just for the ease of being understood.
Regional Differences
Okay, this one is a lot more fun. Does England put in his milk first or last when making tea? Does he put jam first, or clotted cream when having a scone? Does he have chips with gravy, or curry sauce? Does he have dinner at 6, or 9? To marmite, or not to marmite.
Ah, that is the question, and England does not know the answer. Does he do what he does because that’s what he likes, or because that’s what his people do? He didn’t grow up with these habits, after all, they’re all relatively recent in his lifetime, and so these habits are defiantly things he cultures for a particular audience.
I’m not really sure if the above preferences are class based, (well, milk first when making tea is argued to be, but I can't find any sources I'd consider entirely credible. I put the ones I did find in the notes below, in case any one's interested), so it’s hard to get a sense of which one to use. Overall, it doesn’t matter which you do and neither is right or wrong, but the English feel strongly about them, one way or another, and often Arthur the man isn’t sure at all which one he himself actually thinks is better.
Food in another sense though is something he can be surer of. A Cornish pastie not from Cornwall is not worth eating, nor is a Bakewell tart outside of Bakewell. England can be very particular about this sort of thing and enjoys maintaining and supporting the ‘original’ flavour or recipe of a thing where he can, considering this to be the ‘best’. Sally Lunn Buns from Bath, Gypsy tarts from Kent, Eccles Cakes from Eccles.
England wants to preserve his food and culture and has what could be considered a snobbish view on the ‘best’ way of creating or eating his national foods. Some things he is more lenient with: he will eat cheddar cheese, whether or not it is from Cheddar, same from Cumberland sausages not from Cumbria. But he certainly has a preference and he is not afraid to voice this when asked for his opinion.
Okay, we're done
Phew! This had me digging out my old linguistic student brain. To anyone who has made it this far down, gosh golly miss molly thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed the ride, and especially @prickyy who was kind enough to want to hear my opinions about all of this <3

Putting this under the cut because I want to be able to talk about the series but I also don’t want to get harassed
This is a collection of my thoughts as I watched episode 1 of Anne Boleyn (2021)
This depiction of Jane Boleyn already makes me sad. What did she ever do to warrant such hatred?????
I’m very intrigued by this version of Jane apparently being, like, a wolf in sheep’s clothing
Anne: You had the winning hand all along — Jane: I didn’t understand the game. — Anne: Then you shouldn’t play; little on the nose but okay
I like hearing Anne talk about the Reformation and calling Cromwell a dog. Honestly that 10 seconds of dialogue was better than like anything The Tudors gave us re: Anne’s role in the Reformation
Why are Anne and Henry having sex? Anne is pregnant. That’s a big no-no in the Tudor period.
Anne looks WAY farther along than 3 1/2 months...but I guess I have heard that some women start showing sooner with subsequent pregnancies
Also so I guess this version of Anne is supposed to be born in 1501? 🙁 That makes me sad
😱 DID ANNE REALLY JUST MAKE A KIND GESTURE TO MARY???? Am I living in an alternate universe? I never thought I’d live to see the day where Anne isn’t portrayed as an evil step-mother.
...and it’s immediately followed up by her implying that she’s only being kind to curry favor with Henry 😑
I still don’t love these costumes (especially that yellow one from the first scene) but this dark blue one actually looks better in the show than it did in the pictures
Some of these British commercials are literally the exact same commercials we have in the US except the narrator is British instead of American lol
Okay this scene where Jane is reading from the English Bible...I actually kind of love the lowkey vibe that Anne chose her specifically just to make her uncomfortable (because she’s still a devout Catholic). That kind of subtle cruelty is the way I’ve always imagined Anne to be. Like she isn’t outright aggressive, she’s clever and subtle. I wish that got portrayed more rather than like the version in Wolf Hall or The Other Boleyn Girl
”And without my support, you can forget about his” That’s the kind of Henry/Anne dynamic I like to see
Are the writers really trying to make us think that Anne and Jane (Seymour) were like best friends or that Anne really liked/trusted Jane. Like you can have a scheming/cunning Jane without making her relationship with Anne out to be more than it was???
The subtlety in this writing is...nonexistent.
Also I’m sorry but the Queen (whose pregnant to boot) is allowed to walk around with only a single lady-in-waiting accompanying her?
So I didn’t say anything about the shoulder touch, but that kiss? What in the actual fuck??
Wasn’t this show marketed as a ‘psychological thriller’? When does that start because I haven’t been getting those vibes at all so far?
If you’re not American, you have no idea how refreshing it is to not have commercials about medication. Literally every other commercial in the US is about some type of medication and it’s just...ugh it never ends
Okay this set looks more like a manor house rather than a palace. So it’s not just the costumes that lack any opulence then. Did they just not have a very big budget? I hope that’s why rather than just laziness or a total lack of understanding of Tudor culture.
Okay blowing past the whole choking thing...literally at the beginning of this episode Anne and Henry had sex while she was pregnant. But now suddenly they can’t have sex while she’s pregnant because it’ll harm the baby? BUT THEY HAD SEX EARLIER
Why does no one bow when Anne walks past? i know it might sound crazy but that’s like a pet peeve I have when characters in Tudor dramas don’t show proper decorum to the monarch because, like, that was such a big part of court: the hierarchy.
Oh shit she caught him wrenching...and then immediately has the miscarriage. Couldn't wait like five seconds?
So...she’s having this miscarriage and what does she do? Put on her B necklace of course!
Also why do they show the title before each commercial break? Do they think you’re gonna forget what you’re watching?
Henry didn’t confront her post-miscarriage? Really?? If this is supposed to be a psychological thriller, you’d think that would be the perfect scene to include.
Well that was...pretty much exactly what I expected it to be. Kind of mediocre. Actually, all the acting was great, it was really just writing that was kind of meh.

Interesting National Symbols From Around the World
National symbols play an important role in a country’s global identity. Not only do they represent the ideals, tastes, or history of a nation, but they also create a sense of community for the population. Around the world, different emblems like animals, foods, drinks, dances, flowers, and trees are chosen as national symbols in an attempt to define the country as a whole.
Sometimes these symbols are decided upon by the sovereign state as a way to create a cultural sense of unity. Other times, a country’s symbol is chosen by default, and while it may not bear official status, it represents the nation nonetheless. Either way, the result is a wide variety of national emblems that range from surprising to mystical.
Unicorn (Scotland)
Tumblr media
Visit Scotland and it’s likely you’ll notice an abundance of unicorns displayed throughout the country. This is because the mythical creature is Scotland's national animal. You can find unicorns depicted on castles, fountains, cathedrals, coins, and even tombs. According to Scottish legend, the unicorn is both pure and powerful, and almost impossible to tame. King William I chose the unicorn for the royal coat of arms in the 12th century, as did King James VI of Scotland in 1603, and it has been a national symbol ever since.
Tikka Masala (England)
Tumblr media
A plate of fish and chips likely comes to mind when you think of traditional English fare, but the country’s favorite dish has roots on another continent. Tikka masala, a flavorful curry that most often features chicken, is equally beloved across the country. Purported to be “a true British national dish,” tikka masala was introduced to the nation by British citizens of Indian descent. The dish is a popular take-out item and considered to be the ultimate British comfort food.
Gumboot (South Africa)
Tumblr media
All you need to perform South Africas gumboot dance is a sense of rhythm and a pair of Wellington boots. The national dance began as a form of communication between Black miners during apartheid — all of whom wore tall rubber boots in flooded working conditions. Verbal communication between workers was restricted, which prompted the miners to “speak” to each other by slapping and stomping their boots. These movements eventually transformed into the gumboot dance, which now serves as a visual representation of the nation’s oppressive history as well as its work towards reconciliation.
Oak Tree (United States)
Tumblr media
The majestic bald eagle is widely known as a symbol of the U.S., but there is another national emblem that is just as stately — the oak tree. The mighty oak was voted the national tree of the U.S. by the Arbor Day Foundation in 2004. Selected over 21 other North American species such as maple, redwood, and pine, the oak was chosen because of the strength it represents, as well as its ability to grow from a tiny acorn into a powerful tree.
  Kumis (Mongolia)
Tumblr media
Kumis, the national drink of Mongolia, is a fermented beverage enjoyed by many throughout the nation. Although the drink is traditionally brewed with the milk of a mare, kumis can also be made from cow’s milk. Known for its slightly acidic flavor, the dairy beverage becomes carbonated during the fermentation process. It also has a relatively low alcohol content, which can range from one to three percent, and is most often served chilled.
  Quadrille (Jamaica)
Tumblr media
Originally a formal dance performed in court, the quadrille was first brought to Jamaica by Europeans. Over time, enslaved people adopted the quadrille for themselves, morphing the traditional dance into three new varieties: the contra, the ballroom, and the camp style. Of all three, the camp style is the most lively interpretation. This Afro-Jamaican version of the formal quadrille still employs partner dancing, but requires more rhythmic hip swings and footwork.
 Dodo Bird (Mauritius)
Tumblr media
The dodo bird has been extinct for centuries, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be celebrated. Native to the island nation of Mauritius, this large bird vanished from Earth in the 17th century. Since it couldn’t fly and had little fear of humans, the pigeon-like creature was easily caught by Dutch sailors for dinner — a repeated event that eventually led to its demise. As the national symbol of Mauritius, the dodo bird is still celebrated in spirit, and its image is found in shops throughout the country.
 Palm Wine (Malaysia)
Tumblr media
Palm wine, also called toddy, has long been a traditional drink of Malaysia, with roots dating back to 1886. Named for the tree from which it is procured, palm wine is extracted from the unopened flower of a budding palm fruit. After it’s tapped, the liquid sits for 48 hours so that it naturally ferments and becomes alcoholic. It can be consumed chilled or at room temperature and is often mixed with stout beer, fresh chilies, or onions.
 Guinea Pig (Peru)
Tumblr media
Although the cute, furry creature is beloved as a pet elsewhere around the world, the guinea pig is actually considered to be a delicacy in Peru called cuy — and is most often found on a dinner plate. Served since Incan times, roasted guinea pig is a popular dish enjoyed throughout this South American country.
 Caesar Cocktail (Canada)
Tumblr media
You won’t find a Bloody Mary on a menu in Canada. Instead, you’ll find a very similar substitute — the Caesar. Similar to a Bloody Mary, a Caesar cocktail contains vodka, tomato juice, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. However, the addition of clamato juice, which is made from clams, is the secret ingredient that transforms it into the national drink of Canada. The drink is beloved by many and said to be a hangover cure. Canada even celebrates National Caesar Day annually in May.
Century Egg (China)
Tumblr media
Although the process doesn’t take 100 years as the name implies, making century eggs is certainly time consuming. This Chinese egg dish has been around for centuries, ever since a farmer found a naturally preserved duck egg in the mud and decided to try it as a snack. Today, century eggs are soaked in a solution of clay, salt, and ash for weeks. The result is the national dish, a blackened egg with a jelly yolk that is eaten by itself or with the addition of pickled ginger.
 Palo de Mayo (Nicaragua)
Tumblr media
Palo de Mayo is a vibrant, colorful tribute to the African goddess of fertility. The Afro-Caribbean dance is most often performed at the Palo de Mayo Festival, a four-week event that takes place in Bluefields, Nicaragua, throughout May. The high-tempo dance is often performed in brightly colored costumes to celebrate the vibrancy of the Caribbean culture, while also welcoming spring and the possibility of new life
  Spiral Aloe (Lesotho)
Tumblr media
A tiny country located within the borders of South Africa, Lesotho is home to the Maluti Mountains, the only place in the world where spiral aloe grows. This rare plant thrives in thin, rocky soil and blooms pink and red flowers during spring and summer. Named for its mesmerizing spiral shape, this variety of aloe is endangered and therefore illegal to harvest, but beautiful to behold.
 Gallic Rooster (France)
Tumblr media
National symbols play an important role in a country’s global identity. Not only do they represent the ideals, tastes, or history of a nation, but they also create a sense of community for the population. Around the world, different emblems like animals, foods, drinks, dances, flowers, and trees are chosen as national symbols in an attempt to define the country as a whole.
Sometimes these symbols are decided upon by the sovereign state as a way to create a cultural sense of unity. Other times, a country’s symbol is chosen by default, and while it may not bear official status, it represents the nation nonetheless. Either way, the result is a wide variety of national emblems that range from surprising to mystical.

skam brighton season 5 music analysis
hello :) i’ve gone through all the songs on previous seasons of skam brighton and explained why i used them and i thought i would do it for season 5 now that it’s over.
tw for disucssion of addiction, racism, pedophilia, transphobia and homophobia
trailer
we begin with a bang with “don’t blame me” by taylor swift. now it has been said about me that i am a swiftie and it is true. and nick braxton is a reputation era bitch. this song has quite literally it all for nick’s character - we got christian themes, reference to drug addiction and an unhealthy devotion to someone. this trailer has gone through many songs to find the perfect one, but i decided on this one because of the themes, and also because of the line “they say she’s gone too far this time” - which, in regards to nick, can be read in many ways. we got the nick going “too far” with his love for james in subtly trying to break liz and james up, nick and their drug addiction, and nick and their relationship with their gender identity - going too far in both the masculine and feminine directions. also it bangs your honour.
episode one
we!! begin!! with!! saturday night’s alright for fighting by sir elton john!!! because it is saturday night and, as we’vee seen, nick isn’t afraid to get into a fight or two. this song specifically was chosen because of the movie rocketman, which i drew a lot of inspiration from, with the themes of drug addiction and sexuality. also, once again, it simply slaps.
we then get “ymca” by the village people playing in the background over the rest of the party scene. i chose this song because it is a very stereotypically gay song, and a lot of what i wanted nick to deal with was self-perception in regards to stereotypes. he is very stereotypically flamboyant because it’s both the way he is and a defensive mechanism - leading to his bisexuality being erased and being seen as gay a lot of the time. he ‘s pretty much the opposite in regards to his asian identity, with him not being academically intelligent and outspoken and being very british in their speaking patterns. it’s about the balance and duality and all that stuff.
then, as we are formally introduced to nick’s devotion to james, we get “where dreams go to die” by john grant. thank you to my friend katya for recommeding this song as a nick song because it is just. crazy. every line makes me want to scream. especially “this is like a well-oiled machine / could i please see that smile again? / it's all that makes me feel like i am living in this world”. like that just shows the extent of nick’s love - because sometimes you’re just in love with the idea of being saved rather than seeking help. is that poetic or am i just pretentiously talking about my trauma? who knows.
we then get “overprotected” by britney spears - because britney has been a nick staple the whole series. i first heard the song in the musical & juliet and i was immediately like “oh nick core”. the song opens with: “ i need time (time) / love (love), joy (joy) / i need space (love) / i need me (action!) / say hello to the girl that i am / you're gonna have to see through my perspective”. because we are literally seeing from nick’s perspective. i also wanted to introduce the gender dynamics early - including in the trailer, where nick refers to themself with she/her pronouns - and her nick is referred to in the text of the song as a girl. it’s also a very sad song about not having any control over your life with a fun pop backing track, which is very nick braxton.
we then get another party scene, that opens with “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored” (by ariana grande) covered by sam fender. i chose this song because 1) i love the cover and 2) god is it a nick song. literally nick has so many wants (to be loved by their family, to get sober, to succeed in school, to explore their gender freely) but he focuses on wanting james and wanting james to leave liz because there are less achievable and thus safer. also the song fucking slaps.
we close with “happy little pill” by troye sivan, a mlm classic. a staple of 2014. i chose this song because 1) drug in title, easy get, and 2) it’s actually a really good song???? it’s about the dissociation. it’s very similar to the scene with bree in season 4 episode 1 where “chandelier” plays as she’s clearly not doing well but she’s pretending for the sake of her friends. nick and bree are narrative foils and i love them.
episode two
the first song of episode 2 is “be great” by lolandre and jeremy pope after we see nick and his dad’s dynamic for the first time. and it’s really something huh. it’s about how christian does want nick to be great, but christian has a very narrow idea of what success and happiness looks like.
the next bit of media we get in this episode is nick watching the first episode of euphoria. when preparing to write various seasons of skam brighton, i watched a lot of teen dramas to get a good feel for the vibe i was going for. euphoria was one of them and it’s a show i have a lot of mixed feelings for - i think it’s very well crafted and extremely interesting but i also do have issues with the sexualisation of teenagers on screen, even if it is mostly realistic. i chose this scene specifically because nick and rue are very similar characters, in regards to their relationships with their parents (i believe nick is more of a jules kinnie but more on that later). they both just want to be a good kid and make them happy, but they can never seem to do it. gia, rue’s younger sister, is also a parallel to nick’s brothers.
we then get “old eden” by honeywater which is just simply a song i like very much that had the vibes of the scene. also the lines “i want love / but i don't just want love, i want you / i see the beach house, your sweet mouth / but the terrible news / is that love is not how it seems on the screen / yeah, real love has problems / but it's what's in-between that's the best” is simply just nick braxton huh. ambiguous disorder.
we then get “generation why” by conan gray as nick storms out of their house after a fight with their parents. i chose it very simply for the vibes because i only listened to this song once and thought “i do not wish to listen to this in my free time but it is a nick braxton time”. it’s just the angsty indie pop main character walking down the street vibes.
we!!! end!!! with!!! a song i love very much - “sex drive” by austin mckenzie of dwsa fame. this song plays over nick getting “rejected” by james and resorting to grindr to feed their want for human affection - which is where the parallels to ms jules euphoria come from. i chose this song specifically because it begins with the lines “who’s driving?” on repeat, which calls into question who is in control in the scenario. as seen on screen, nick is the one who initiates the “date” but, at the end of the day, nick is an underage teenager and the person he’s on a date with is an adult man. also the song is simply a fun bisexual time.
episode three
we open with “hurricane drunk” by florence and the machine, a song that has been decidedly nick core since 2018. like “i’m in the grip of a hurricane / i’m going to blow myself away”...... nick braxton you crazy little person
“yours” by greyson chance plays over nick and james driving out to the woods to skip school together….. it is quite insane. “no matter who i'm with, it's you that i adore / if you're not sure / baby, i'm yours” like i scream and shout nick braxton has always been in love with the concept of james cohen
“myrtle ave.” by mxmtoon plays as nick is feeling isolated from his friends…. like they just vibe with the song and the lyrics so hard. nick is just. i have no words other than i love them.
we close with “st jimmy” by green day because. goddammit isn’t he. like james just comes out as bisexual (just like st jimmy in american idiot the broadway musical) and nick is like “you are like a saint to me, i worship you, i will do anything for you”. like it’s a song about drug addiction but it’s also about being bisexual but it’s also about the performance of masculinity and the performance of being a “rebel” that james and nick both do i love them so much.
episode four
we begin with “lucy in the sky with diamonds” by the beatles. i do not listen to the beatles but i think the song is about drugs and the beatles is a james cohen band in canon so it has the connotations babey.
we then get “seventeen” by troye sivan as nick goes on grindr to seek out adult men. it’s genuinely such a nick song - once again, the fun poppy music in the background and the deeply upsetting lyrics. also, as in season 4, i chose this song to emphasise the fact that nick is seventeen and a minor and should not be doing these activities.
we then get “dancing on my own” by robyn as we’re at the vaguely halloween-esque party. it’s once again about the boppy music and sad lyrics and like. nick voice i’m in the corner watching you kiss her ohhhhhh i’m right over here why can’t you see me ohhhhhhh i’m giving it my all but i’m not the guy you’re taking home ooooh i keep dancing on my own. like he’s fucking insane (he is both me and nick)
and then!!!! we get a scene very personal to me. nick watching rocky horror for the first time at a shadowcast showing and watching “the time warp”. i first saw rocky horror when i was about 10/11 because i saw it on glee and wanted to watch the real movie and it made me so so transgender and homosexual. it is such a non-binary little movie and the time warp is just an absolute bop.
it’s followed by a brief showing of “sweet transvestite” because tim curry in that movie is such an experience for anyone involved. like oh to be gender questioning nick braxton and to see that. what a fucking experience. and also to be gender questioning 11 year old me and to see that and then find out my school is doing a kidz bop version of rocky horror. fucking insane transgender times.
we close with “cecily smith” by will connolly as milo and nick walk home together because. it is just such a sweet song. like life is not the things that we do it’s who we’re doing them with. and it is a very nickmilo song and i am the president of nickmilo nation. i love a non-binary romance i do i do i do.
episode five
we open with “halloween” by phoebe bridgers because it is literally halloween. insane. but it is also such a nick braxton song like come on man we can be anything…… nick braxton voice i’ll be whatever you want…… it’s about the people pleasing and the desire to be wanted and needed loved and goodness gracious. also nick braxton fig faeth kinnie for this song specifically.
and then!!!!! we get nick dramatically singing “girl crush” by the harry styles version in his bathroom mirror. because goddammit they do have a girl crush. it’s about the gender and the desire to both be with james and to be liz becausenick is non-binary babey……..
and then!!!!! in such a parallel!!!!! we get milo singing “inner white girl” from a strange loop on their instagram live. “a strange loop” was a big inspiration for this season, with very similar themes fo it (you should listen to it right now) and this song….. quite genuinely we have nick singing a song about wanting to be a white girl and then they hear this song….. like nick does cling to his inner white girl as a way of staying safe - they cling to the safe idea of mlm flamboyancy and humour to hide from their genuine emotions and gender……. like it is insane to me. also white girls can do anything can’t they!!!!!!!
we then get “the people who raised me” by gregory and the hawks after nick has a fight with their parents…. “but i won't mind no time spent to save me / just trying to be good to the people who raised me” literally nick is trying his best to be good but he can’t be and that makes him angry!!!!!! but that anger is born out of a deep, deep sadness that nick has no emotional language to express, but anger is a language he can speak and it is. insane. like it’s about masculinity, it’s about femininity, it’s about everything. fuck.
we then get "search your heart" by george feeny as nick sadly vibes at school…. also this scene does parallel with the liz/mary scene in season 2 where their parents fight. like liz is shitty to her friends but stays for her sister and nick is great to his friends but leaves his brothers behind….. the range.
and then!!!! we get phoebe bridgers’ cover of “friday i’m in love” because it is friday and nick is in love huh.
and then!!!!!!!!!! a moment i have been building up to!!!!! we get “back to black” by ms amy winehouse after nick finds out james has a crush on alistair thee fletcher. and just like. god. this song has everything for nick. it’s a song about depression, addiction, leaving your lover, anger, bitterness, second choice ness….. and also he is literally going back to black with his hair colour!!!!! because he thinks being more masculine is what will make people love him and he views pink hair as un-masculine!!!!! and he’s also going back to his family, so he’s going back to trying to hide himself to fit into their expectations….. like god it is an insane little time.
episode six
we open with “idk if i’m a boy” by blue foster - a song i got on my discover weekly and it was a deeply personal attack. like nick voice i don’t know if i’m a reject i don’t know if i’m a loser but i know that i’ve been feeling feminine since i’ve been teething…. and how the song uses humour as a way to cope with gender dysphoria like it’s nick bay bee.
we then get “green light” by lorde because god it is such a james/nick song i feel insane. like “did it frighten you / how we kissed when we danced on the light up floor?” because james and nick have canonically kissed many times before….. also lorde as an artist just has such intense nick vibes it’s so much fun
we then get "fluorescent adolescent" by arctic monkeys over a party scene because i’ve been told on the internet that it is a british teen party classic. unfortunately the rowdiest party i’ve ever been to is my cousin’s christening so i do not know if it is factual, but it does slap.
we then get vérité’s cover of somebody else by the 1975 because i just simply prefer this version. but like. oh nick braxton. oh it’s about the rori and the james and the nick being afraid of being open and committing to someone but still wanting to feel the sense of being wanted by someone and being the sole person they want….. literally it is very crazy.
and then we end with “sugar we’re going down” by fall out boy!!!!! like it it such a good song nick voice am i more than you bargained for yet!!! i’ve been dying to tell you everything you’ve ever wanted to hear!!!! because that’s just who i am this week!!!!! like it fits so well with his character but also it is so funny that sugar we’re going down plays as they faint at the party……. i am a comedian sometimes.
episode seven
the first song we get in this ep is “demi moore” by phoebe bridgers as nick is detoxing in the hospital. like quite genuinely “i don’t wanna be stoned anymore!!!!!!!!” they don’t want to be alone anymore!!!!!!!!!
then we get “bite the hand” by boygenius. just. like. “i can’t love you the way you want me to” is just. such a statement for nick’s season. like he can’t love james the way james wants to be loved by nick, they can’t love their parents, their parents can’t love them…… it’s all about learning how to love in a way that is felt by all parties involved in the relationship be it romantic, platonic, familial or otherwise. like. it’s so insane it’s all about love
and then we get “relay” by fiona apple - which was a contender for the trailer song at some point. like nick @ alistair is very “i resent you for being raised right etc.” because he knows liz is fucked up and has flaws, he’s seen them, but alistair is easy to project all of his hatred onto. also just like evil is a relay sport thank you ms apple.
we then get “girls just wanna have fun” by cyndi lauper and “dancing queen” and “mamma mia” by abba sung at the lgbt youth club karaoke night because. i mean of course they are. also they are very fun gender songs and i enjoy them :)
and then. my friends. the moment you’ve been waiting for. nick braxton singing alanis morrissette’s “you oughta know”. now this is gonna be a long one.
the you oughta know analysis
first things first, i got the jagged little pill broadway behind the scenes book for christmas and there’s a whole chapter about you oughta know being a song about the queer struggle of being unseen and unheard and i feel so validated like that is exactly what the song is about.
but for nick. oh baby. it is them singing to james, to rori, to al, to liz, to bree, to his parents, to his teachers, to everyone who perceives them wrong. it’s their moment of standing up and saying i am angry and i am serious about this and i deserve to be listened to as a young person. i will now give an in depth analysis of every line i want to.
“the perfect version of me” - bree and nick have had so many parallels throughout the series, which bree can be described as a “better” version of nick. they’re in therapy, she’s taking care of herself, they’re bisexual and it’s accepted by everyone, she’s a good partner to rori, she has parents who love her, and she can be gender non-conforming in a safe way. but this line also applies to al - because nick and al have also been compared this season, with al talking about how he’s comfortable with his femininity and james liking al, who, despite claiming to be more feminine, is still more traditionally masculine than nick. al, bree and liz are all very academically smart. they are all very creatively gifted. liz doesn’t struggle for money. nick, in their mind, compared to all of these people, is a failure.
“so she speaks eloquently / and she could have your baby / i'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother” - this applied to both liz and bree, who both try to be seen as very eloquent speakers, and who are both afab, so therefore can have james’s baby - something nick wouldn’t be able to do. but we have seen in liz and bree’s seasons that they both have sexual trauma, and bree especially is uncomfortable with having children. it’s nick having this idea of womanhood and femininity being something so unattainable and required for james - that it kind of segways into al. because al is also assigned female at birth and could, as he is pre-t, hypothetically have a child, which is playing into some transphobic notions, but nick sees al as both more feminine and more masculine than him - making al just perfect for james.
“and every time you speak his name / does he know why you told me / you'd be there until you died / 'til you died, but you're still alive” - nick changes to he pronouns here, now directly talking about al. we’ve seen james flirting with nick and we know they’ve kissed in the past, and james and nick are incredibly close friends. but james still, in nick’s mind at this point, chose al over him.
“it was a slap in the face / how quickly i was replaced / and are you thinking of me when she fucks you?” - the conversation about how all the skam brighton characters relate to the line between sex and love is so interesting to me. it is also the reason i do not allow my parents to read this show. but anyways - nick does feel so genuinely replaced by everyone in his life, like there’s always a newer, better version waiting just around the corner. what nick doesn’t know is that that is how everyone else around him feels as well. and the line “are you thinking of me when she fucks you” is such a pointed line because it’s not a line of confidence or a joke. nick knows that no one thinks about them like that because they feel repulsive but try to play it off as a joke.
then we get the “i” section, which is, in the script, more “ayes” and “nahs”, but i wanted to change it to be the word “i” specifically because so much of the season is nick existing for other people. for their parents, for their friends, for their clients, for james. in this moment, they are choosing themself. they are standing up and saying “what i feel is important and i fucking matter”
“'cause the joke that you laid in the bed, that was me / and i'm not gonna fade as soon as you close your eyes / and you know it” - because nick’s sexuality and nick as a romantic partner is treated as such a joke throughout the show’s run, and james has been trying to turn every time he kissed nick into a joke that will go away, but it’s not going to go away because nick remembers it. even if james tries to deny his sexuality to nick’s face, nick is always going to remember that james was, at some point, attracted to men enough to kiss him.
“and every time i scratch my nails / down someone else's back, i hope you feel it / well, can you feel it?” - every time nick has sought out sex with strangers it’s because they feel rejected and insecure in themself. they seek out this sexual validation as a way to feed their want to be loved and noticed by people and he wants james and rori to feel hurt by it - he wants to have the power, he wants to have the control.
“and i’m here” - this line is just. so powerful to me. because it’s a line of defeat - after all this time, nick’s ended up at some crappy youth group with his little brother babysitting him, and he’s been dumped and cheated on and overdosed and everything is so awful. but then it becomes a line of celebration. of “yeah, all that shit happened to me, but i’m still here, i’m still standing, and no one can take away the fact that i am here and i am alive and i deserve to be respected” - something milo taught them when they talked about their tattoo
“to remind you of the mess you left when you went away” - nick himself is the mess they all left - because they feel so abandoned and alone and like they are just a mess to be discarded, but he’s here to remind everyone that he’s here. it’s a call for help.
“it's not fair, to deny me / of the cross i bear that you gave to me” - this line i always saw as directed at his parents - they gave him this cross of being the perfect eldest sibling that ended up crushing him, and they deny that it ever happened. but nick knows it did. the same way he knows james like guys. the same way he knows rori didn’t like only him. the same way he’s been denying himself of the cross he bears of being non-binary, the cross of being an addict, the cross of being a mentally ill neurodivergent person. this song is him finally letting go of that denial.
“you oughta know” - he’s talking to everyone with that line. everyone should know about his pain, about his emotions, about what he’s gone through, because he’s kept it so bottled up for years. it’s not fair for him not to share it because he deserve to.
they don’t call me isaac tumblr user yououghtaknowmp3 for nothing.
episode eight
we open with “seven” by taylor swift as nick reads a letter they wrote to their younger self. like. “i used to scream ferociously any time i wanted” is such a line about being neurodivergent as a child and then being forced to mask as you grow up….. also the bridge is just james and nick core…. you should come live with me and we could be pirates…..
we then get “nonbinary” by arca because i feel like at this point nick would be trying to listen to more nonbinary artists because they want to see themself reflected rather than running from it!!!!
we then get “heather” by conan gray as nick and liz accidentally meet at the local mentally ill teen zone. because i am just fucking crazy like that. and yes, i chose that song before it got big on tiktok. but i think it’s funnier because it is a famous song.
we then get “falling” by harry styles as nick is being emo in their bedroom because nick is just the type of person who will dramatically listen to harry styles in their bedroom whilst being sad. it also completes the full circle of sad taylor swift to sad harry styles, but with no vehicular manslaughter.
we then get “400 lux” by lorde after james and nick have their big conversation because like it is just a them song. like you buy me orange juice. it’s also about the james/nick having a gansey/ronan dynamic in the way that nick is devotedly in love with him and james is just being homoerotic for the jokes. but not most other ways. honestly i haven’t thought about the skam brighton versions of these characters in trc….. many thoughts head full
episode nine
we open with “pink rabbits” by the national as nick redyes their hair back to pink. and i’ll be honest. i only chose this song because it has pink in the title. but it does still vibe with nick though.
we then get “be your own 3am” by adult mom as nick is dealing with some bad cravings. it’s just a very pretty song for listening to alone at night in your bed in that weird space between sleep and awake. i love it.
we then get “i am not a robot” by marina as nick walks down the street because nick is a marina bitch!!!!!!! and “you've been acting awful tough lately / smoking a lot of cigarettes lately / but inside, you're just a little baby / it's okay to say you've got a weak spot” is such a nick @ james line it makes me insane
also rich’s entire character and backstory is directly lifted from skins gen 3 because i am niche and make content just for me
we then end with “rager teenager!” by troye sivan because i have listened to that song exactly once, decided it had nick vibes, and just stuck it in an episode somewhere.
episode ten
we open with “strange torpedo” by lucy dacus because it is just. such a nick song. it is insane. i am insane. like it is about nick wanting someone but not being sure who or what it is because he just wants to be loved and discovers that sometimes being liked is better than being loved…….
we then get “used to you” by mxmtoon and like….. “tell me what i can say / and i can say it / tell me what i can do / and i can do my best / tell me who i should be / and i can change it” is such a nick early s5 lyric…… and how the song is kind of a love song but the line “now i’m just kind of used to you” is very nick about his feelings towards james
we then get “gay street fighter” by keiynan lonsdale as milo gets their sexy slow mo that all of the love interests get at some point. they deserve it.
and then “to be alone with you” by sufjan stevens plays as milo and nick have their first kiss in the pool because i always wanted to include that scene and thought “hey here is good”. and like. they are alone with each other a lot and they like spending time with each other….. they are friends, they are teens, they are falling in love a little <3
we then get “creep” by lena hall as nick has a little gender moment at school. lena hall played yitzhak in the broadway revival of hedwig and the angry inch and she just has so much gender. creep has always been a nick song and this cover just…. it’s them.
we then get some ambient guitar music during the nick/rori scene and i chose some songs from “your city gave me asthma” by wilbur soot because it is a fucking great album and nick is canonically a mcyt stan so i simply had to. we end with “your new boyfriend”, which is a funnier, happier wilbur soot song and it is simply a fun time.
episode eleven
we open with “gender is boring” by she/her/hers which is just an absolute banger. like “gender never really meant that much to me / til' people started telling me how it was supposed to be” is such a great line and it is very nick braxton because. like. it’s just gender babey everything is about gender except for gender which is about having fun.
“dorothea” by taylor swift plays as james and nick have their final big scene together and like. it is such a homoerotic and fun song i love it so much thank you taylor friend of the show swift. “and if you're ever tired of being known / for who you know / you know, you'll always know me” is just……. god.
we then get “i do (end credits)” by kevin abstract as we open on the final scene of the season because a) it has end credits in the title and b) it is just another song i think nick would enjoy listening to.
we then get “they/them/theirs” by worriers as we get another little party montage because it’s a vibe time and like. i do love a they/them pronoun moment. it’s a very good and fun pronoun to use.
and finally we get “prelude” from next to normal as al comes in late to the party and awkwardly stands at the back. i chose this song because. well. you’ll see :)
thank you for reading my analysis that no one asked for, i just love having fun and talking about my silly little show :)

Special Delivery 3
I’m going to start with an apology here. This is not great literature, it’s just an exercise in writing about what I know and wrapping it up in a fluffy romance that will never happen. It’s pure self indulgence, but if you’d like to read some fluff with a bit of British culture thrown in for good measure, go ahead and read. If you want me to take you off the tag list, please ask, no offence taken. If any of the words or terms are unfamiliar, please ask, as I make no changes to suit American readers.

Fabio and I visit the local fish and chip shop, and I explain what’s on the menu.
Warning - mentions the death of a parent.

3 Takeaway my heart...
Once parked outside my terraced house, I unlocked the door and Fabricio helped bring our rucksacks in. He left his boots and jacket by the door, which opened straight onto a room that had once been two small rooms, now knocked into one large one with the stairwell exposed. I was looking forward to moving to a place that had a porch where wet and muddy clothes could be left, although I was fond of my cozy little house. I went to the kitchen to unpack the lunch boxes after directing Fabio upstairs to the bathroom. He was soon back downstairs as I let myself sink into the couch by the window that looked out onto the street.
‘You have a nice place.’ he said ‘It’s small, but this room is…’ he searched for words and gave up ‘I like it.’
‘I chose it a few years ago.’ I answered. ‘It was hard making enough money to get a mortgage, but my parents helped’
‘Ah yes. They are - not here any more?’ I shook my head.
‘No, Dad died just after I bought it. If I hadn’t got this place I might have moved in with Mum, but I think we would have driven each other crazy, much as I loved her.’
‘Family is muy importante. Mi madre, mi padre - I love my parents, they have helped me so much.’
‘Me too.’ I smiled ‘Mum passed away a few months ago. I can pay my house off now, and I’m going to rent it out for a little more income’
‘Passed away?’ he asked.
‘Uh - she died.’
‘Oh, I’m sorry. You said before. You are sad?’ his expression changed to one of concern.
‘It’s okay Fabio, she was getting older and a little confused. I was just beginning to think of moving in to look after her, but I went to visit one morning and she’d passed away in her sleep – very peaceful.’
‘I think we would all like to go like that.’ he said. ‘Now, you are hungry, yes?’ he patted his stomach.
‘I am.’ I replied ‘Tired and hungry, but I really enjoyed our trip.’
‘Yo Tambien – me too.’ he smiled ‘It is difficult to travel, there are not many busses’
‘It is easier if you have a car.’ I admitted ‘But sometimes it gets very crowded with visitors.’ He nodded.
‘There are some takeaways near here?’ he asked ‘Perhaps we should not have pizza this time.’ he grinned.
‘Yes, there are two fish and chip shops and a couple of Indian curry houses, but we can ring them.’
‘Oh.’ his eyes lit up ‘You can tell me what to order in a fish and chip shop. My friends and workmates are not English.’ I smiled, and the thought of going into my local chippy with him suddenly overcame my aching feet and stiff legs.
‘We can go together’ I suggested ‘Perhaps a cup of tea first, and I’ll be good to go’
Tumblr media
Walking along the narrow high street with Fabio got me a few curious and envious glances, and together we walked into my favourite chip shop. I went there sometimes as a treat, but too many visits and I would soon be overweight as just about everything they sold in there was deep fried. The shop was long and narrow, and a high stainless steel counter stretched for about three quarters of the length of the shop, the remainder of it being a normal height counter where customers paid and picked up their orders. The air was warm and humid and smelled of the hot fat and frying chipped potatoes and other savouries. Various pieces of battered and fried fish, sausage and other savouries were on display in the glass cabinet.
We entered at the back of the shop to queue. A young couple were in front of us, waiting for someone to take their order, and an older man sat on a ledge in the front shop window, obviously waiting for his. Fabio looked at the food sitting out for display as one of the shop employees, dressed in a white coat and white hat, got a wire basket of cut potatoes and lowered it into a vat of hot fat. Sizzling sounds filled the air and a great cloud of steam went up as the basket was shaken to get everything evenly distributed. The employee, Chris, looked up at the queue of people waiting as another woman with a small child had come in behind us. Fabio made a silly face at the child, who hid behind his mother’s leg, sticking his thumb in his mouth.
‘We’re just waiting on chips.’ Chris explained as Fabio nodded to the woman behind us.
‘You go first.’ he said ‘I don’t know what to have. It’s my first time.’
‘Oh, thanks.’ the woman smiled warmly, and gave me a wink as she squeezed past us, the child trailing after her and staring up at Fabio with wide eyes. He stuck his tongue out and the little boy grinned self consciously. Fabio looked back at me.
‘He’s just like my sister’s boy.’ he said fondly ‘I miss mi familia’ He nodded his head at the glass cabinet ‘So, tell me what all this is.’
‘Okay, this all cooked in advance – if it’s out here it’s not spoken for – it hasn’t been ordered. You’ll want chips of course; I’ll get a large portion to share…and you need some protein – some fish or chicken or sausage, and maybe a salad.’ I pointedly looked at his belly ‘You’ll need to work it off afterwards.’ He laughed, the corners of his eyes crinkling.
‘You look okay.’ he said, looking me up and down, making me wobbly legged again. ‘Do you eat here a lot?’
‘Oh no!’ I said I’d be the size of a bus if I had chips all the time. I just have it as a treat every now and again.’ He laughed.
‘Size of a bus?’
‘It’s just a saying’ I explained sheepishly. ‘I do use a lot of them, sorry if it’s confusing.’
‘No no, is good to hear things like that.’ he insisted. Again he looked at what was on offer. A huge board behind the counter formed a menu with prices clearly marked.
‘Okay, not all chip shops serve the same – here they serve not just fish, but sausage, pies, chicken, burgers and patties. It’s all fried apart from the chili con carne, which is probably the closest you’ll get to the sort of thing you eat at home – I think.’
‘What are you having?’ he asked.
‘I’ll have cod, if it’s big we can share it. I love curry sauce but it doesn’t really go with fish.’ I noticed he was frowning in concentration ‘Perhaps if you have a piece of chicken?’ I suggested. ‘You might like chicken breast, or you could try the sausage’
‘Okay, Chicken breast, and we share’ he decided
‘Right, we can have a side of salad or baked beans, or mushy peas’ He looked even more confused, and I had to suppress a laugh ‘Okay, I don’t like mushy peas or beans with chips anyway. Salad it is. Oh, we can have the curry sauce on the side and dip our chips…’ This time I couldn’t help chuckling as he looked completely lost. ‘Don’t worry, I know just what to get.’ I said reassuringly.
When I ordered the food, Steve told me it would take an extra ten minutes to get the chicken ready, so I took my visitor to the off licence a few doors down to look at the beer and wine available. I picked a couple of bottles of real ale for him to taste, and he chose a bottle of white wine, pleased that they stocked a passable bottle of Argentinian Sauvignon Blanc. I wondered if he would be walking back to his flat that night when he had eaten and drunk what we had bought.
It wasn’t long before we walked out of the chip shop with one bag that clinked and another full of food, heavy and fragrant with the scent of oil and potato and fish. We got back and set out the boxes and packets on the table. I heated up some plates, got out some knifes and forks, and Fabio started opening up the boxes. I put out the chips, and divided up the fish and chicken. He looked at it askance.
‘This is a lot of food.’ he said.
‘I know’ I sighed ‘Chris was very generous with the chips, and the fish and chicken…’ I patted my stomach, recalling the way Chris had shovelled chips into the polystyrene tray and wrapped it up in paper. ‘We don’t have to eat it all, you can take some home.’ He sat up straight and seized his fork, his expression grave.
‘Okay, let’s do this.’ He started to attack the meal, and I did too.
‘Mmm the fish is good.’ he said with relish ‘This is – batter?’
‘Just flour and water. They dip the fish in batter before frying it. It goes crispy and keeps the fish hot. You saw them doing it, remember?’
‘Mmm’ he said, swallowing, and took a gulp of the beer I’d bought ‘Deliciosa – tell me some words you would use.’
‘Okay – you can say the fish is tasty, or delicious – or yummy, or scrumptious.’
‘Scrumptious? I like this word.’ he said before trying the chips.
‘You can put all sorts of sauces on the chips’ I explained ‘Hold on, you can try some’ I went out to the kitchen and returned with some bottles ‘Now I like their curry sauce’ I opened a pot they had given me, and dipped one into the pale brown substance, and held it out to him with my fingers. He took a bite and rolledit around his mouth appraisingly.
‘Not so bad.’ he said. I showed him the tomato ketchup and the brown sauce, and offered him vinegar.
‘Lots of people like to have vinegar put on the chips straight away’ I said ‘but I think it makes them go soggy. I like them crisp.’
‘I like this.’ he pointed to the brown sauce when he had sampled them all ‘It’s spicy but not too much. It’s yummy.’ I nodded.
‘Your English is good’ I said ‘You just mix up the order a little, but I suppose I’d do the same if I tried to learn Spanish. He grinned.
‘I teach you’
‘You should say I will teach you or I’ll teach you’
‘I will teach you, Lisa.’ He waved a chip in the air ‘Say after me Fabio es muy guapo’ I narrowed my eyes at him.
‘That’s a word I see a lot on your Instagram feed in the comments’
‘Say it’ he challenged me. I sighed.
‘Okay, Fabio es muy guapo.’ He laughed, flashing his white toothed smile.
‘Is it a rude word?’
‘Nooo.’ he laughed. ‘It means you think I’m handsome.’ I rolled my eyes.
‘Fabio, you’re a model, of course you’re handsome.’ I tapped away on my phone ‘Okay then – Fabio me engañó, él es travieso’ He laughed harder, shaking his head.
‘Yes senora, I tricked you and I am’ he furrowed his brow, then tapped the word into his phone ‘Naughty - that is a strange word in English. Did I say it right?’
‘Almost perfect, but I went for ‘mischievous’, it means the same.’ I replied. ‘How about me – is my Spanish good?’ He put his hand palm down in mid air and waggled it from side to side.
‘A little not good.’
‘Not so good, or so-so’ I corrected him. ‘We’re close to France here, so at school we learn French – I know in the USA they learn Spanish rather than French, so I don’t know a lot. A lot of British people go to Spain on holiday, but I haven’t.’
‘My parents made sure I learned English.’ he explained ‘It has been useful for work – around the world many people speak it, but British English is different to American English.’
‘Our cultures are very different too, but American culture is taking over a little.’ I said. ‘It’s sad some things are changing or getting lost.’
‘You can show me what is different.’ he smiled ‘If you like – if you have time.’
‘Of course, though moving house is going to be difficult. I’ve taken time off my classes.’ He looked at me in query. ‘I teach Yoga.’ I explained ‘I drive to villages and take classes. It doesn’t pay a lot, but I enjoy it, and I manage. My parents helped me out, and they’ve left me the house and some money, so I can relax for a while. Renting this house will help too, and I might have enough to buy a flat too.’
‘I help you move.’ he frowned and corrected himself. ‘I will help you move – is that right?’
‘Yes, you’re learning fast.’ I said. We carried on eating until Fabio declared he couldn’t eat any more. We hadn’t managed to eat everything, but to do so would have been painful. I heard the catflap slam shut and my ginger tomcat came in to investigate the smell of fish.
‘Ah, el gato!’ Fabio exclaimed. ‘He is yours?’
‘Hello there Ginger, about time you showed up.’ I greeted him. He froze in alarm and stared at my guest, who leaned down, flicking his fingers and making little kissy sounds. After a cautious sniff, Ginger decided he wasn’t too much of a threat and approached him. When Fabio reached out and scratched his ears, he had a new best friend as Ginger melted, just like I had, and fell at his feet, rolling over and exposing his belly.
‘He’s cute.’ he smiled. ‘Ginger.’ he made more clucking noises and carefully stroked the cat’s belly. Ginger writhed on the floor, completely under Fabricio’s spell, but like the typical cat he was, he suddenly decided he’d had enough and leapt to his feet, shaking himself. Fabio took his hand back swiftly.
‘It’s okay, he doesn’t scratch or bite – or hardly ever.’ I said. ‘Come on Ginge, let’s see what’s left in your dish.’ I went through to the kitchen and gave him a fresh dish and a handful of kitty kibble. He set to eating it, noisily crunching, and I straightened up with a groan, my full belly announcing its discomfort. Fabricio stood in the doorway.
‘I will go home.’ he said.
‘You can find your way? I’m sorry, I’ve drunk too much to drive.’
‘Is okay, is not far and the walk will be good.’ he replied. There was an awkward silence and I remembered his promise not to touch me with some small regret. He shifted uncomfortably. ‘Thankyou Lisa, I’ve had a very English day.’ My heart skipped a beat as he leaned forward and kissed me on the cheek. As I blushed, he stepped back ‘Like a brother.’ he said gravely. I took a shaky breath and followed him to the front door.
‘See you tomorrow.’ I said as I opened it and he stepped out onto the street. He made a mock salute.
‘Hasta mañana, Lisa.’ he grinned, and walked off to his digs.

European experience on Tumblr : seeing people and posts and memes calling European cuisines bland and tasteless because apparently Europe is only made up with England who has a notoriously bland cuisine .
Ι think that even British people use forms of seasoning most of the time. I am not super familiar with the British cuisine though. The English also colonized India so something tells me they are aware of the different spices that come from there. Maybe they chose not to use as much or maybe a lot of them do. They call the spicy foods “curry“ if I remember correctly because of the influence of the Indian cuisine. Traditionally their dishes may be considered “bland“ but, tbh, if the dish is tasty then I don’t care how many spices it has.
Many spices create a different taste, for sure, but you cannot accuse the people of England of not eating like South Asians. The climate and herbs are very different. How ““superior““ a culture is is not measured by the amount of herbs they use. As long as a dish is tasty, it doesn’t matter.
Isn’t there in the Japanese traditional cuisine where it’s considered art to create simple dishes with a few ingredients? The average English person in the old times had limited ingredients but they tried their best to make dishes that their family would enjoy. So, I don’t know why someone would bash the English for doing it while praising the Japanese for it. Ah yeah, let me guess why. Because white people are stereotypically bland and with no culture!
The worst thing is, the British cuisine has a poor international reputation because of the food rationing policies put into place by the British government during the wartime periods of the 20th century. The mid-20th-century British style of cooking emerged as a response to the depressing food rationing that persisted for several years after the Second World War, along with restrictions on foreign currency exchange, making travel difficult. So, people judge the English based on a cuisine they developed during a time of struggle and poverty.
The truth is Anglo-Saxon England developed meat and savoury herb stewing techniques a looong time ago. Plus, they always traveled - and conquered - so they were no strangers to spicey cuisine. In fact, they used elements of foreign cuisines when it was possible. But, as all people, they use what ingredients are availiable at the time and they want the most tasty stuff.

Hey howdy folks!
I would like to share with you this little fanart I did yesterday but I couldn’t post, because I finished it too late at night. It’s a little
Fun fact, the first time I watched this show was in spanish from mexico, I watched a couple of the episodes because they voices in spanish from mexico  were cool. But I had to quit watching it because I just couldn’t stand the drawing style! It was too ugly and odd for me! XD In my opinion at least.
But then sometime later, when I presented my characters from my webcomic Nature’s Guardian, one of my watchers on deviantart told me my character Laura looked a lot like Eliza from the Thornberrys. I said “no way!! Can’t believe it!” and I laughed a lot, and then I went to give an eye to the show again to see if it was true, but I only found it in English, so I watched it in english...
And you can’t imagine my surprise when I realized the voices in english were as cool as Spanish from mexico’s one! Plus, it was totally other world! Thanks to the british accents I felt like I was watching a completely new show! hehe
I don’t need to say after that I preferred to watch the show in it’s original version in English because the british accents were awesome!. I felt in love specially with Darwin’s and Nigel’s voice. MON DIEU! they are incredible!!
But I didn’t know Nigel’s one was Tim Curry until I researched about it cos I wanted to know who was the owner that extraordinary voice. And it suprised me a lot! Because it was totally different to what I have seen from him before; for example, I have seen him in It as pennywise, and also I heard him on a villian role as Hexxus (Fern Gully the last rainforest) and the skull on Bartok the magnificent. But not very much on the role of the good guy. So it was refreshing! ^^
He’s really cool as a good guy! I remember the first time I heard it in english.
I chose the episode of the Giant Pacific Octopus because well, if I have the choice I’ll always go for my most favorite animal. And despite the episode itself wasn’t much, there’s no joy and excitement on earth that can be compared to hearing him saying "OH A GIANT PACIFIC OCTOPUS!!” with all that feeling of amazement in his voice and that wonderful and hot accent he’s got!
Since then I fell head over heels for him! XD And I though to myself “that’s how ‘Giant Pacific Octopus’ should be pronounced! I will pronounce it like him forever and ever! ”
And I still try to do it. And I'm still fan of the character! :D
I think, what I liked the most about this character, along with his voice of course, it’s his personality. He’s a very loving and caring person, a guy who enjoys adventure and loves wildlife, who is genuinely devoted to search and to know more about nature and animals. Also it’s a very tender and understanding father! A good guide to young. Someone worth to take as role model and to look up to.
He was firm but not too strict, and he knew when to be indulgent and to not be too harsh about their children’s mistakes. Thing that my father didn’t had...
When I was a kid I always wanted a dad like him.
Now as a grown up adult I want a husband like him!
I’ll probably never find it, but at least nobody can say it’s bad to dream with a fictional character, and giving him some appreciation. hehe
Oh also! I never understood why Debbie complained so much of her family’s lifestyle! I would have given anything in my life to have parents devoted to science and animals and be able to go on an adventure on a super van like that one, and travel arround the world to know a different wildlife enviroment every day!

Is your allergy/intelorance to spices why you went to live in Britain for a while?
I-  NONI WHYYY (i’m laughing so hard  but also, THE ABSOLUTE DRAG) Anyway....  I WISH!!!  but sadly....not the reason I chose England I already knew i was going to enjoy the food because no condiments anywhere ever (well, they do use a lot of black pepper for...reasons, and it is still not ideal) But the sad part is that they have a lot of traditional food from all over the world, and I tried some real Korean, polish, Vietnamese, Mexican, Greek food...but i couldn't handle it :’) (shout out to all my friends who just let me try a bit without me having to buy it) I’ll never forget that African restaurant we went at the end of the year, it smelled so SO good..and that i couldn’t take a single bite, by the smell alone i knew i should Not attempt to eat it. A friend changed her very plain rice with me so i could eat something .A very sad day. I have several stories of different times I tried spices and did not end well tbh. I try to remember all because...it is necessary to remember what things can potentially kill you lol. The worst one was when i tried curry , i was young and still didn't accept how bad my allergies could be. A bit graphic but just...after eating it the skin of my face started to gets very red and very dry and just fall off and, let me tell you, it itches Like Hell ... maybe it is the worst one because i wasn’t very aware it could happen. I’ve had...very different reactions to several things including starbucks, very specific oranges and even water!! (more how they treat the water, but still) It seems evolution did a very mediocre work with me. It could be worse tho! At least I know how to cook and I like how I cook (and i can promise is a bit better than common british food)
