Former tennis star Patrick Zweig and up-and-coming actress cozy up at intimate dinner

On Friday, the pair grabbed Italian at a notoriously hard-to-get-into restaurant. The couple shared dishes and drinks and seemed to be enjoying each other’s company. 

Zweig, 29, recently retired after a season that ended in injury. His retirement came after a series of scandals, most notably being a risqué leak of his camera roll. 

At 29 herself, she is coming off the heels of a very busy award season. Taking home her first Best Actress Emmy and BAFTA awards, she also recently received her second ensemble cast award.

The two seem to be an interesting pair, having finished wrapping a movie they were both working on in late October. The unlikely friendship comes on the heels of murmurs about a potential relationship.

“They’ve been enjoying their newfound friendship. It's rare for her to find someone with similar life experiences that she can genuinely bond with,” an insider told us.

Tension at the world premiere?

This weekend marked the world premiere of a film that has been generating a lot of Oscar buzz. The first reviews have been mostly positive, despite the very large elephant in the room.

The average onlooker couldn’t help but notice the physical distance between Zweig and the principal actress in the film during the premiere. Despite both being there, neither were photographed together throughout the entire event. The distance feels particularly charged, considering the pair made a movie of their own not too long ago.

It’s so funny you say this. I have a friend who works for the production side of one of those really big entertainment magazines who does those roundtable for actors who are in talks for receiving awards. His girlfriend was just in one, and my friend told me that he was there and super supportive the whole time. Like, bringing her coffee the way she likes it, hyping her up during the photoshoot, and everything in between. Obviously we saw the worst of them a few months back, but they’re a pretty cute couple. None of this is fine tuned but it’s the basic of whatever I got. I changed some stuff to suit my needs so…so I’m sorry if it’s a bit confusing but here we go!

This is a version of her specifically meant to know Wukong before BMW events. (Other versions of her like modern au or whatever I need her for don’t follow this but have similar things)

She is an immortal, one birthed of fire, chaos, destruction, (rebirth if you think about how fire culls the land for new life to grow), the embodiment of the roaring fires on the sun basically.

So in her younger days she is not exactly well liked, shes strong and was someone who didn’t like to held down. She didn’t outright disobey or was rebellious but if something wasn’t right or if she felt slighted/felt someone was slighted she would make that shit known. Quick to anger.

Because of this she had pissed off the wrong person, they placed a curse on her - (again not fine tuned) and it basically is like a black tar root that starts from her heart and starts spreading and coiling around her body the more emotion she feels, specifically negative ones like (seen negative) anger, hatred, fear, all those kinds of emotions.

She can heal, but the pain and the curse will spread to such agonizing levels that if she pushes it too far it will take over her body and encapsulate her/put out the fire in her which keeps her immortal. She of course tries to break the curse but there isnt anything that works. It’s like a spore that is attached to her heart that has molded to her and wont go.

Unfortunately this makes her shut down emotionally, she doesnt have a support system so as much as she tries to fight the agony gets worse and worse. Her fire dims, not dead, just dims. Kavara at this point just does her duties, keeps to herself, and represses all emotions whatsoever. She’s free of pain and honestly doesnt have to worry about shit, so it becomes her new norm.

In comes Sun Fucking Wukong.

The charming egotistical chaotic monkey yaoguai that wants to play immortal. She hears of him mostly, but remains indifferent. Until one day they finally meet.

Probably the worst thing that happens to a lot of people actually…..because Sun Wukong is the first to make her laugh. Ever. Not one of those “haha i am victorious” laughs she might have had when fighting back in the day. No, a full on belly aching laugh. Tears down her face and a wide pretty smile, something she honestly wasn’t capable of/thought she had. (She’s beautiful but never thought about it I guess)

This is the first time she realizes that HAPPY or positive emotions dont make the curse spread.

Wukong of course takes this as his sign to KEEP making her laugh (when he isnt being a little shit in heaven and to others).

Over time they do become friends, he learns of her curse, she learns of his goals. Unfortunately for everyone else Wukong influences her to stop being an emotionless doll and she becomes his partner in crime. Best chaotic duo ever.

THERES MORE BUT THIS IS JUST SOME OF HER STORY!!!

I didn’t wanna give the WHOLE lore, if you want more let me know. It’s quite a bit and a mix of angst & happiness.

Same with a version of her that meets Destined One. It’s a different AU and one that is a bit on the angsty side but I will ALWAYS give a happy ending.

Even though our younger days are gone, we’re also glad that those darker days are left in the past. At an older age, we’re confident enough to fulfill those wishes of our younger selves while stronger enough to challenge those who wish to kick us back into hiding. Let’s just bring back the fun retro stuff instead of the bad stuff that shaped the past.

This picture dates back to 2007. I was barely a teenager during this time period and my signs of being trans were also starting to be noticeable. One of those signs is feeling jealous of girls like the ones in the pic. I didn’t know what gender envy was while my knowledge of transgender was limited to gender bender transformations at best. While their fashion sense wasn’t really the best, I had a soft spot for these girls and in my mind, I really wished I woke up one day transforming into one of these girls.

Nowadays, we have much more knowledge of what being trans means and HRT access is more readily available today than in 2007. Trans people born that year will finally become adults in 2025 and unfortunately a lot of them are currently unable to take even basic HRT due to a flood of anti-trans laws being enacted in several states and counties to people under 18. There have been horrific spikes in $uicide attempts among trans kids since these laws have been active. I don’t even want to know what post-2025 will look like for trans people in general, regardless of age.

It sucks because I can recall how bad my dysphoria was as a kid. I would spend an unhealthy chunk of my free time looking at gender benders on DeviantArt, YouTube, or stuff like Mashiro’s Castle wishing it would happen to me one day. It wasn’t until the early 2010s that I had a better idea of what being trans was. But by then, I was already becoming an adult. I survived, but unfortunately I can’t say the same for other trans kids and trans people that are no longer with us.

The only thing I can do now is keep going and fulfill any possible void I can at an older age. Just to give you an idea, these girls aren’t teenagers. They’re over 27 years old in this pic and they’re currently well into their mid-40s. Yet, their outfits definitely seem like the typical teenage stuff I saw growing up. It isn’t strange to see girls in their late 20s-early 30s today looking like teens due to their looks, clothing, and sometimes personality. Those of us at that age range tend to inspire the younger generations and create something even bigger. In my case, I rather do this my way and become the best trans girl (or woman) I dreamed of being. So what if I’m a little too old to wear an alt outfit? I’m going to wear what I want!

If you’re reading this long rant and flashback Friday moment of mines, I just want you to know to keep going. It isn’t the end yet. It’s just the beginning of something new.

Hongjoong: 

It’s common practice for Hongjoong to admire you after you get ready to go out. Looking you up and down with a soft smile, holding your hand and asking you to do a spin for him. Hongjoong adores fashion, personalising clothes and unique accessories, so seeing your outfits he always knows just how to elevate them. Running to his room to grab you a jacket of his that would match well, or a necklace that suits your shirt. He loves sharing these things with you and you almost always have a piece of him with you through clothing/accessories. 

Seonghwa: 

Animal Crossing is hands down Seonghwa’s favorite pass time aside from building legos. His switch was easy to bring on tour with him and it was just a cozy and comforting game. So it was no surprise when he asked you to come design a little part of his island with him, something to remind him of you when he’s far from home. So you sat together and designed a little part of his island together, frequently changing it a redesigning it together when new items are placed in the game. He really likes it because it’s such a fun way of spending time together, often with a nice warm drink and cozy blankets. Bonus points if you also have Animal crossing and have a Seonghwa section on your Island

Yunho: 

Yunho loves trying new games with you. The man is a gamer down to the core, be it board games or video games he absolutely adores them. He never buys a game without you in mind and while cozy games aren’t his cup of tea, if you like them he’ll get them all for you to play together. If it isn’t multiplayer it isn’t for him. He wants to lay down on his bed with you, playing video games with or against you at all hours. Even if you guys are apart, he’ll call you and you’ll play together from a distance. It’s always fun to him to try new games and figure them out, meet and make fun characters etc. He loves it so much. 

Yeosang: 

When all of Ateez designed Hehetmon’s Yeosang couldn’t help but wonder what yours would look like. It was his signature thing after all, if you had one it would have been cute. So he asked you to design one and since then he had it made into a plush and a phone case design together with his hehetmon. He always personalizes thing with it for you, because he finds it so adorable. He also has the plush on his bed together with his own and he takes it with him on tour. Creating the hehetmon is just a sweet memory to him and every time he sees it, it reminds him of the fun time you had together. 

San:

One hobby is not enough, San is the type of person to enjoy trying anything for a hobby. Though he might be hesitant sometimes, he loves trying new hobbies with you. You want to take a ceramics class? Yes, he’s there. He saw a crochet video of a cute stuffed animal, he’s buying enough yarn so that you both can try. There’s an interesting work out class being advertised? Hell yeah, he’s signing you both up. He loves trying new things with you, so much. Especially the more cozy hobbies like crochet, coloring, or photography. It’s fun to him for you both to sit down together and do something fun. 

Mingi: 

He’s not shy about his love for any type of music, especially however rock/alt bands. Mingi is a sucker for good music and some of the most least known bands have the best music. Something you two often do is go on a youtube/spotify/soundcloud deep dive, looking for new music and new bands to listen to. You guys can sit for hours, watching music videos, listening to albums and watching concert videos for artists you didn’t know existed until 10 minutes prior. It’s always so fun. You also make playlists for eachother when you’re apart, to fill eachother in on things you found when you weren’t together. It’s important time spent together.  

Wooyoung: 

Wooyoung loved to cook. It filled him with so much joy but nothing filled him with more joy than people enjoying his food. Food is a way for people to come together and he loved that, but your opinion mattered most. IT wasn’t rare that the dorm would be full of the members and you, waiting for your meal and Wooyoung would run at you with a spoon or a fork. Ignoring all the other members and letting you taste his food first. If you said it was missing something, he’d figure it out. If you said it tasted perfect, he’d tell everyone the meal is served. He also runs at you enthousiastically as well, happy for you to taste it. 

Jongho:

It was ritual and something you both cherished deeply despite it being really mundane. Getting ready in the morning was Jongho’s favorite time of the day, standing next to you doing your hair as he brushes his teeth, or you showering as he does his skincare. Every now and then if one of you is still tired and groggy, you’ll eachother. Helping Jongho get his hair just right or him helping you put on moisturizer and sunscreen, but his favorite is when you’re both really awake. Making fun faces at eachother through the mirror and poking at eachother as your getting ready.

i wanted to write poly rookvil x mc fics and general headcanons because i have anime boy rabies (life threatening) but i need mc to be fucked up irrevocably. like you. like me. like so many seyx sexy bastards out there. what do YOU think of alt!yuu x rookvil <3333333333333333333333

You think I’m fucked up irrevocably? Goodness, I’m honored! <3

But I love the idea of alt!yuu and RookVil. Frankly I think the mc of all of my fics is going to be alternative because that’s just. How I am and my writing is nothing if not self indulgent! I’m of the belief that both Rook and Vil have at least somewhat alternative tastes in fashion. At the very least they both enjoy the subversive! I know in my experience at least, my outfits are very methodically planned out and so is the time I allot to getting ready for the day! There’s a lot of thought and love that goes into alternative fashion- which I think Rook and Vil would both respect regardless of your precise subculture. As for headcanons, I have several!

Firstly, Vil is going to help you dye your hair (if you dye it, ofc). It’s a non negotiable, and frankly he’s the best person to trust with the task. He’s methodical, experienced, and nothing short of a perfectionist. It’s going to look incredible (as if he’s capable of producing work that’s anything less than impeccable).

Now, we’ve talked about blood vials and such on this blog before. I do think Vil would find the premise interesting- I mean he’s a brilliant potions master, and the blood of an individual is one hell of an item to have a hold of. That’s a lot of power you’re willing to give him, which he’d undoubtedly find attractive. The idea of relinquishing some of his own power to another person (someone he loves deeply) also sounds enticing. However he’s WAY more thoughtful about the process than Rook, who would be almost dangerously gung ho about it. I can also see Vil preferring a ring over a necklace- idk it just seems like that would be his preference.

So much makeup. Like, an insane amount. The three of you get ready together in front of Vil’s massive vanity. It’s almost like a ritual- before any event, the three of you gather to get dressed and do your makeup side by side, ofc aiding one another if need be. It’s an important kind of bonding activity that all three of you are extremely particular about. It’s also exclusive to the three of you- nobody else is privy to these pre outing activities.

Overall there’s just a lot of very intense closeness between the three of you. Sometimes others describe being around you three as being excluded from a conversation they aren’t even fully aware of. The way you exchange silent glances and affirmative nods makes it abundantly clear that there’s some form of communication nobody on the outside of your relationship could ever understand. Of course you all have your individual lives and hobbies, but that doesn’t negate the fact that when the three of you are together you’d like to live under one another’s skin. You aren’t one organism per se, but instead three very distinct people who are deeply intertwined and seem to be on the same wavelength regardless of the situation. You know each other so well, and it’s a relationship built on an equally spread layer of trust and mutual understanding. The lines between friends and lovers definitely blurred organically here- there was no particular definition for your relationship until Vil very matter of factly referred to the three of you as a polycyule. It was never a Formal “what are we” discussion- the three of you love one another, and never really questioned motives beyond that.

Finished Ayaka and Yoimiya quests on my alt, which means I’m ready to start Inazuma act 2.... the one you can’t do without an archer. 

I will admit that I didn’t pay particularly close attention to the two story quests, but it was still interesting to see them a second time. I’ve grown more fond of the characters, so my impression isn’t quite as negative as when Inazuma came out, but there’s still some things to mention. 

As a reminder, Ayaka’s and Yoimiya’s story quests are mandatory between Act 1 and Act 2. 

Looking at it charitably, there’s two things this does. First, the quests both mention the political situation, particularly Sakoku, to some degree, so if these quests aren’t locked to here, they’ll look quite strange if you happen to play them later, after Act 3 or worse, after Raiden chapter 2. 

Second, it might be intended to provide some padding to the archon quest. Playing through Mond, you are almost certainly going to do the Amber, Lisa and Kaeya quests somewhere in the middle, which helps to give some breathing room to an otherwise quite rushed story. These characters also have very little presence in the actual archon quest but they appear at the very end, after the hilichurl invasion, so having their story quests here lets you feel like you know them better. 

Now, the Mond starter quests aren’t hard-locked to anything from what I recall, but you’re going to need to raise your AR, so you’ll probably do them during that period. And I think the Ayaka and Yoimiya quests might be intended to have a similar effect. 

Unfortunately, it doesn’t necessarily work that well. 

One problem they have is that, well, there’s two of them. Both of them end with you going to the festival island, and there’s some overlapping things they bring up, like an emphasis on how the Traveler should consider Inazuma their home and always feel free to return there. Doing them back to back (as you’re forced to, in order to continue the archon quest), it feels repetitive in some ways. 

Additionally, Ayaka’s quest in particular doesn’t really fit in here, imo. It’s a personal story with a much more laid back tone. We’re in the middle of a very tense situation, and Ayaka deciding to go look for her mother’s theoretical old friend, including preparing a new outfit and gifts... it feels quite weird and out of place. There’s very little linkage back to the main story, and it’s really just about Ayaka. 

I think both quests would have benefitted from tweaking Ayaka’s to leave out mention of Sakoku and just letting it not be mandatory. 

Yoimiya’s also has a more lighthearted tone in places, but the main plot line is about Sakoku and people affected by it. It’s also more similar to the archon quest, in that it’s focused on Inazuma as a nation and the people who live there. There’s quite a bit about what kind of place Inazuma is, and in particular what kind of place it is outside the current wartime situation. 

I like it more on the second playthrough for a few reasons, like Yoimiya’s JP VA being extremely charming, and just being more receptive to the concepts being conveyed because I’m not trying to get to the next act, like dang, I just had to sit through Ayaka’s date, and now this too? Can’t I just get on with it?? It was so frustrating when Inazuma released. 

One interesting thing to note about Ayaka’s quest is that she occasionally frames her struggles and situation from specifically her perspective as a woman. She relates to her mother, she doesn’t seem to feel like these are feelings she might share with her brother, despite them being in roughly the same situation, etc. She even says “as a woman” a couple times, iirc. 

This stands out a bit because I don’t recall any other character doing this, and it falls into a pattern of lowkey... sexism?... in Inazuma, with it also being the only nation where a female character was explicitly told she can’t do something because she’s a woman and with the negative framing of marriage from the woman’s side with Chisato in Ayato’s quest. 

I’m still not sure what to make of all that.

Duty swept Ayaka away a while ago, leaving you in the Masquerade Hall alone. You’ve got a vice-like grip on the once-pristine glass you’re holding that’s now riddled with sweat from your clammy palms and squished fingerprints from your constant fidgeting. You haven’t taken a single drink from it the entire time, instead holding it just to feel more like those around you. This was a bad idea from the start. And the worst part of all is that you knew it was a bad idea, but couldn’t bear the thought of turning Ayaka, your newfound best friend, away.

So you went along with it. You found an outfit elegant enough for the occasion, —the occasion being a Masquerade Ball for nobility and high-ranking government officials from all the nations of Teyvat, held in bustling inner-city Fontaine,—you chose a mask upon arrival (and were stuck with only two options, one being a slightly cracked, oddly colored fox, and the other being the obvious choice of a falcon with intricate, vine-like designs,) and you took a deep breath, hoping to simply grin and bear it.

You’re hardly an individual who can be considered “from nobility.” You come from a family of miners: hard-working, but not exactly high on the list of social status, especially in a place like Inazuma where titles often hold much weight. You don’t exactly fit in here, either. Though you spent a fair amount on your outfit, it’s painfully obvious that yours would be considered cheap if you were to compare it to anyone else’s here. It’s then that you passively start to regret not having let Ayaka have an outfit made specifically for you as she’d offered many times over. . .

“Don’t go to the trouble! Everyone will be focusing on you and Ayato, —not me. The way your outfits look is much more important!” You’d insisted at the time, and even now, you agree with the heart of your assurance.

But everytime someone so much as glances in your general direction, you fear they’re then turning back to their wealthy comrades to snicker about how “unfortunate” you must be to have shown up in something so lackluster. After all, the most expensive thing adorning your body at the moment is your earrings that aren’t even yours to begin with. Ayaka lent them to you as a last minute touch up, happily clipping them to your earlobes while mentioning that she’d never worn them before because they never seemed to match her outfits properly, “but they match yours perfectly!”

You weren’t so certain about that, but again, didn’t have the heart to turn her away.

“Care to dance?”

You nearly jump out of your skin and drop that fairly sullied glass held tight in your hand when Ayato approaches you with that request. He notes the way you flinch and quickly apologizes.

“I’m sorry,” he says, but a dangerously amused smile seems to play ever so gently on his lips just below the hem of the silver, gem-adorned cat mask that rests atop the upper half of his handsome face. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”

To say that Ayato makes you nervous would be a grave understatement. You know much of him, but have spoken to him personally very few times. Of course, being close with Ayaka has afforded you sneak peeks into parts of his life from time to time, but you’re certain that admiring him from a distance and truly knowing him are two completely different things.

It doesn’t help that you have a crush on him, —one that Ayaka thankfully has yet to pick up on, as far as you know. She likely wouldn’t be mad, but as her elder brother, Ayato feels beyond off-limits. You often feel guilty for harboring any feelings for him in the first place, so there’s no telling just how much worse that would get if you ever indulged in that attraction actively. . . Although, you doubt someone of Ayato’s status and admittedly high-levels of handsomeness would ever glance in your direction. There’s distance there that need not be filled, as far as your perception of it goes.

“That’s okay,” you manage a coherent reply before explaining: “I’m a little on edge is all. I don’t come to events like this often.”

But you’re sure he’d already deduced as much from your clothes.

“I try to avoid them when I can,” he admits in return. “The idle chatter is a rather tedious endeavor.”

You’ve heard that sentiment from Ayato before. 

“I imagine it gets tiring being someone of your status at gatherings,” you acknowledge.

“Ah, you know who I am, then?” He says, almost sounding saddened by it.

Huh. . . ?

Did he really think that a simple mask would be enough to hide everything else? It’s not as if he and Ayaka both don’t stand out amongst a crowd. Even with their faces covered, it’s nearly impossible to not notice them each in their own regard. Ayaka’s giveaway is her long, powder-blue ponytail that bounces ever so slightly when she walks, as well as the way she seems to glide across the floor like she’s dancing sometimes.

And Ayato. . . His giveaway is not only his hair that might as well be sparkling under the dimmed lights of the hall, but his voice; so melodic and sweet, but confident all the same. The voice you’ve heard in passing a million times before when he enters the Kamisato Estate and you hear him walking by through the halls from Ayaka’s bedroom. He moves in ardent strides and drips with security. He lives in a completely different world from you.

“. . . Kamisato Ayato,” you say, answering his question.

His amused smile seems to falter into one of melancholy.

“Correct,” he confirms. “Being from Fontaine, I’d just assumed I’d need to introduce myself properly.”

He leaves out the part about assuming your lack of nobility or high status based on your clothing. While he can be tactless at times, he knows much better than to mention something so careless. Just as well, he still thinks you look lovely tonight, even if your outfit hadn’t been hand woven to match your every dip and curve.

“Being. . . From Fontaine?” You inquire further, feeling hopelessly confused.

Although, you must admit that it makes sense he wouldn’t recognize you. He traveled with Thoma rather than his sister after he learned that Ayaka would be bringing a friend along, so he hadn’t a clue what you’d be wearing or what mask you’d be donning. Not to mention the fact that most conversations between the two of you have been quick and in passing, Ayato simply stopping and greeting you to be polite rather than out of genuine interest. He’s busy, always rushing about from place to place, or locking himself away in his office to complete stacks of paperwork that might as well be tall enough to reach the ceiling. 

It makes sense that he doesn’t really know you well enough to pick you out of a crowd, especially with a mask on the upper half of your face. Unlike you, he likely hasn’t memorized your voice. He hasn’t looked on as you grace his presence with your own, heart thumping a little faster.

“The falcon masks,” Ayato elaborates, “they’re quite popular among citizens of Fontaine, no? Perhaps I assumed too quickly.”

You should tell him. You really should. But the opportunity to be someone else before him is just so enticing that it’s hard to resist. Impossible, even.

“You’ve got a good eye,” you tell him.

It’s not really lying if you don’t outright deny his suspicions. Lying by omission, sure. . . But not simply lying.

He laughs, low and charming.

“I must agree,” Ayato answers, but somehow, it doesn’t seem to be the case that he’s referencing the falcon mask’s connotation.

If you didn’t know any better, you’d think he was flirting with you.

“The offer to dance still stands, by the way,” he says, offering his hand for you to take. “If I may?”

Without fully thinking, you begin to reach up, but stop yourself halfway. There’s a lot wrong with this situation, and you’re beginning to worry that you’re going to wind up in over your head. What if Ayaka sees? Although, that’s unlikely considering that she’d been ushered away by some very talkative businessmen from Liyue to another room entirely, and if her luck were to rear its ugly head, she might well spend the rest of the night getting an earful from them. And you know better than anyone that she wouldn’t be the type to interrupt or easily find a way to remove herself from the situation.

I should tell him.

You open your mouth to make the confession, but another spills out entirely.

“I. . . I’m not a very good dancer,” you say.

For what it’s worth, that is true. In a setting like this, you haven’t a clue how to move your feet or dance with someone else. Ayaka had offered to teach you some simple steps, but you’d insisted that it wouldn’t be of any use, and if not for Ayato’s startling request, you more than likely would have been right.

“I’m not much of one myself,” he notes, almost playfully so, “but I can lead a few choppy steps, if you’d give me the honor.”

He’s persistent, but not pushy. You know you can decline and he won’t be upset. . . But his hand is right there, outstretched to you of all people, and it’s hard not to feel like the luckiest person in the world.

So you take him up on his offer and let your fingers softly grace the flat of his palm. He offers you another smile, although you can't seem to read between the lines of this one, and he places your sullied glass on a passing collection tray. As promised, he leads you in an easy dance, whispering to you the directions you should step the first few times as he seeks to ease you into the movements.

"You're a natural," he compliments, though you're sure he's only being polite.

You gaze up at him through the wide slits in your falcon mask, quickly finding his eyes behind the holes of his own. Even under the shadow cast from his feline disguise, you can see the bright, heart-melting periwinkle sparkle of his irises. You've never before had the opportunity to gaze up at him like this, but you quickly subvert your gaze to the ground, pretending to watch your feet as you move slowly in his wake. He's so. . . Perfect. So much so that it's driving you wild.

To dance with someone like him at an event like this is a dream come true; but in the back of your mind, you know it wouldn't ever truly last. He'll move on, find someone of higher status, whether by way of choice or pressure to do so. He'll never think twice about you once this night has passed.

"Your eyes are beautiful," he says in a low, whispered voice.

Your heart all but palpitates at the compliment. It feels so sincere, —like it's not just something he's saying because he wants to have a fleeting love affair with someone he thinks to be from another nation. This behavior of his, if a bit reckless, is genuine. . . Maybe even devastatingly so.

"I-I don't know about that," you answer with a brief stumble, quickly finding your verbal balance once more, "—but thank you. That's nice of you to say."

His fingers, once loosely hooked around the tippy top of your hip, relax to a semi-firm hold. Like it or not, every touch is melting you down even more, and even the thought of being caught by Ayaka has completely slipped your mind. You don't have the will to fight these feelings away for the time being. It's hard to not live in the moment when every graze of his fingertips electrifies your nervous system and leaves you tingling from head to toe.

As you dance with Ayato to the soft, violin-heavy music that plays in the background, you lose yourself. You can't help it. Everything is too intoxicating, and though you've purposefully avoided all the alcoholic drinks tonight, you've found yourself lost and delirious all the same.

Kamisato Ayato. . . It's all your fault. . .

"If I may," you request softly, "why did you ask me to dance with you? Out of everyone else, I mean."

His answer is quick and concise, as if he didn't even need to consider it. Or, perhaps it was more so that he'd been waiting for such a question all along.

“You seemed to be the only person here who wanted nothing from me at all.”

It’s hardly difficult to imagine all the people that have likely approached him tonight in need of something here and another there. . . Ayaka began dealing with very similar things the moment she entered the hall. You’d been on your own for most of the night, chatting with her in between the exhausting conversations about politics, foreign affairs, and other things you have little to no experience with outside of being her companion. You know little more than the average person even still, as Ayaka prefers to keep business and friendships as very separate endeavors.

“It must be rough,” you acknowledge, “. . . I doubt I could manage even half as well as you do if I were in your place.”

“You flatter me,” Ayato smiles again, “but I’m hard-pressed to believe you. I have a feeling you could manage just fine.”

Again, it’s so genuine that it almost stings.

“Beyond that,” he continues, reaching up with a single hand to push his mask up to the side, revealing his full face to you, “I’m interested to know more about you. What brings you to this event?”

Your sister.

“Um. . . Nothing really in particular,” you reply vaguely, hoping to leave it at that.

He doesn’t press it, though he is curious as to what your answer means. Something about the way your kind eyes flicker up at him, and then quickly away again almost sheepishly, is familiar to him somehow. . . Not that Ayato is any stranger to nervous eye contact.

“Might I ask for your name then?” He inquires.

Your heart begins to race. What are you to do in this situation that you’re completely and utterly unprepared for? If you’re honest, what happens if he recalls the day you introduced yourself to him officially? It’s not much of a longshot to assume that Ayaka has spoken of you to her elder brother, and though he may not know you personally at all, he likely knows of you. But you’re drawing a blank and can’t seem to think of any fake names to offer him that don’t sound completely and utterly ridiculous. The silence between the two of you, while having only lasted for a few seconds by now, seems deafening.

Just when you’ve decided to succumb and let the pieces fall where they may in order to avoid the long-term embarrassment, a saving grace seems to swoop by with slicked back hair and a gaudy suit on. A man you’ve never seen before approaches Ayato and all but pulls him away from you, as if you had never existed in the first place. . . And maybe in their world, the one Ayato lives with the rest of his wealthy, noble counterparts, you never truly did. He’d interrupted you as if you were little more than dirt on his shoe.

“Mr Kamisato, it’s been quite a while! I’ve recently heard news that the state of affairs in Inazuma has been faring quite nicely since you were given a higher position. Though I’m sure the work is tedious, I imagine the results have been pleasing for both yourself and. . .”

You’re out of earshot before the man finishes, having slipped out of Ayato’s grip and back into reality. With murmured apologies, you slip through the crowd and into another room altogether, spotting Ayaka in the far corner. You can tell her smile is strained, but there isn’t much you can do to help her. In fact, there’s really nothing you can do at all. So instead, you slip out onto the balcony of the building, desperately in need of some fresh air.

It’s cold out here, and though lots of people are mingling inside, you feel alone, —completely isolated in your own little prison. You slip the mask off your face and hold it in your hands, trying your best to hold back tears as you crane your neck to look up at the sky. Stars seem to twinkle amongst the inky expanse above, but their joyous concert falls on deaf ears. A small sob bubbles up your throat.

To make matters worse, you reach up to hastily wipe away your shameful tears, only to find that one of your earrings is missing. One of Ayaka’s earrings. You know you have to find it, but you can’t will your legs to move. Even more so, you know you don’t exactly look your best right now, and the thought of letting anyone see you this way is completely humiliating. 

You resign yourself to huddling against your knees, back pressed to the wall in the far corner where you can’t be seen from the inside. There, you let yourself cry for a few minutes, —allowing yourself to feel every inch of sorrow and discomfort, thinking maybe it’ll make you feel better. It doesn’t. . . At least not really, anyway. So much had been right, and then so much had been wrong. Or, maybe everything had been wrong the entire time and you were just too caught up in the moment to realize it.

By the time your tears stop flowing and you’ve leveled your breathing out, someone has joined you on the balcony.

“Y/n?” 

His voice is familiar, almost comforting in the moment. You draw your gaze up to meet his eyes from where you’re sitting.

“Thoma. . .”

“Is everything okay?” He inquires, softly adding: “if there’s something you need to talk about, I’ll be glad to lend an ear.”

You give a bitter laugh, mostly at yourself. He’s just being kind, as he always is, in true Thoma fashion.

“I just don’t think I belong here,” you tell him.

“All the fancy clothes and all the jewels, —all the people with more Mora than I’ll likely ever see in my entire lifetime. People who’ve lived most of their lives well off, doing things I can only do now because of my friendship with Ayaka. . . And even then, it’s clear that I just don’t fit in. The divide between myself and everyone else is wide enough to swallow me whole.”

Thoma gets it, probably more than you might expect. With how well he’s integrated himself into the Kamisato siblings’ way of life, it’s almost too easy to forget that Thoma is much like you. He often accompanies the two on various trips, aiding in their schedules, sometimes taking care of the finer details. His official title is that of a housekeeper, but he does much more than just that behind the scenes of it all.

“I understand where you’re coming from,” he tells you gently. “I really do. It’s not easy sometimes, even for me, and I’ve been to dozens of events like these.”

“Could’ve fooled me,” you reply with a soft smile, “you look the part, and I’m sure you play it well enough.”

“I certainly didn’t at first. I was completely overwhelmed, and probably feeling a lot like you are right now. Completely lost and afraid to make any mistakes, worried that everyone was judging me no matter what I was doing, as if everyone could see right through the nice suit I was wearing and the smile I was trying so hard to keep plastered on my face.”

“And it’s like everyone just knows somehow that you’re not meant to be here, that you’re not cut out for this kind of environment, and they’re all just standing around waiting for you to mess up and completely humiliate yourself or something,” you add bitterly.

“At the same time though, you seem to be invisible,” he continues. “People maneuver around you and disregard your existence sometimes, —as if you’re so insignificant that they couldn’t be bothered to give you the time of night.”

“Exactly,” you sigh deeply.

“But,” Thoma says, optimistically so, “a lot of that is all in your head. Most people don’t come to these kinds of events to poke fun at others, and the rude people only stand out because you’re already focusing on all the negatives. At the end of the day, someone like you. . . People like us, —we have just as much a right to be here as anyone else.”

“I do believe that’s true,” you acknowledge.

“I just. . . Wish that everyone else believed that it was true as well.”

“Well, whether certain individuals like it or not, here we are,” he says candidly.

You smile.

“Thank you for talking with me, Thoma,” you say.

“My pleasure,” he replies, eyes slitting into little crescent moons as he gives you another smile.

Just when he’s about to comment on how chilly it’s gotten as the night has deepened and suggest that the both of you head back inside, another man steps out onto the balcony.

“Thoma,” Ayato says, “have you seen Ayaka by any cha—”

He stops himself mid-sentence when he realizes that you’re sitting in the darkest corner of the balcony, arms wrapped around your knees.

“Nevermind,” he withdraws his previous question, “. . . would you mind giving us a bit?”

Thoma asks no questions, simply nods his head and does as was asked of him. He slips back inside and moves away from the entrance to the balcony, just to be clear that he has no plans of eavesdropping on whatever conversation is about to take place.

You have a hard time even looking up at him now, nonetheless meeting his eyes. It’s far too late to pull the falcon mask over your upper face again, so with no hope of hiding your appearance now, you take a quick breath in and resign yourself to whatever outcome is waiting on the horizon.

Ayato seems as calm, cool, and collected as he always does. It’s almost intimidating now.

Before he speaks, he offers his hand to you for the second time tonight. Once more, you take it. It’s warmer the second time around. . . He helps you to your feet and doesn’t mention that your eyes are puffy or that your face is a little tear-stained.

“It’s a bit cold,” he notes, slipping the jacket of his suit off in order to drape it over your shoulders.

It smells like him, and you don’t have the will to hand it back. Your shaking hands grip at either side, pulling the jacket around yourself a little tighter.

“Thank you,” you say in a voice barely above a whisper.

“I suppose I did presume too quickly that you hailed from Fontaine,” he comments.

There’s no hint of bitterness in his voice, —in fact, there’s little more than a silent understanding. You’re not certain of how much he’s been able to grasp from your brief interaction, but you have a sneaking suspicion that your feelings for him are no longer a complete secret. Which is embarrassing, of course, but. . . It could always be worse.

“I’m sorry,” you apologize, nearly choking on the words as they bubbled up from the back of your throat. “I know that I’ve put you in an awkward position, and that truly wasn’t my intention, I just. . .”

You trail off, uncertain of what to say. You don’t really know what happened. It was like you were being swept away, completely overtaken by the way his warmth seeped from his palm to the tips of your fingers. Selfishly, when you had the opportunity to touch someone you’d long thought to be out of reach, you couldn’t manage to turn him away.

“There’s no need for you to apologize,” Ayato assures you. “I’m the one who asked you to dance, after all. It was my mistake not recognizing you much sooner. You did feel familiar to me somehow, but I couldn’t seem to place it.”

You stay silent, unsure of what you’re supposed to say in reply, or even if you’re supposed to reply at all.

“Ah,” he says, as if a lightbulb has gone off over his head, “that reminds me.”

His long, lithe fingers fumble around in his pocket for a moment or two before he removes them and holds a dangling crystal between them. Your eyes widen a bit at the sight of Ayaka’s earring, —one half of the pair you thought you’d lost for good.

“I realized who you were after you’d rushed away,” he explains. “These earrings were a gift from a member of Liyue’s Qixing given to Ayaka last summer. I recognized this one the moment I saw it on the floor at the tip of my shoe. The pieces came together easily after that.”

Ayato turns to the side, bringing the earring close to you.

“May I?”

You nod in approval, and he says nothing more, instead reaching out to brush a few loose strands of hair out of your face and tucking them behind your ear. He then clips the earring to your earlobe before pulling his hands away and returning them promptly to his sides.

You swallow the lump that’s formed in your throat.

“I really am sorry,” you tell him, “even if you don’t think I have to be. The truth is that I was happy when you asked me to dance and once I realized you didn’t recognize me, I thought that if you knew who I was, you’d have taken the offer back. So I didn’t say anything.”

“I wouldn’t have taken the offer back,” he says firmly.

“When I told you that I wanted to dance with you because you were the only person in the room that I didn’t feel wanted me to do something for them, I meant that. And I meant it when I said your eyes are beautiful as well, —because they are. Especially now. They reflect starlight like the surface of the ocean.”

You clam up in the face of such a bold compliment. Ayato makes it hard for you to breathe sometimes. And as if to emphasize his points, he offers his hand to you for the third time that night.

“Would you like to dance with me? No masks, no interruptions. . . Just the two of us and the waxing moon.”

With your heart pounding like a drum, you take him up on his offer yet again. It feels much more intimate now that you’re away from everyone else, his hands stationed along your hips and your hands resting on his shoulders. You decide then and there that when this party ends, you’re going to be honest with Ayaka about your feelings for her elder brother. Whether this goes anywhere between you and Ayato is one thing, but not telling Ayaka the truth is another, and she’s likely deserved to know all along. Avoiding it has given you a lot of grief, and with these sudden and fully unexpected developments happening as they are, you know it’s better to be honest with her now and not blindside her with this later if things end up getting serious.

Hopefully, everything will turn out okay in the end.

You have a feeling it will.

But for now, you’re content where you are, dancing with Ayato under the light of a thousand stars.

In another round of Interesting Details Flouting Around Possibly Worthy Of Notice — Hunter’s hands

Other people have noticed this as well — Hunter grabs his hand after high fiving Gus and grabbed it earlier when it was shaking. The aren’t the only times attention was given to Hunter’s hands, though they’re the first ones I can remember off the top of my head. This, combined with the fact he’s Never shown without gloves in the show, has made people wonder if something is up with his hands — if he’s hiding scars or is missing fingers under his gloves or something

But outside the show…

These are by TOH’s crew, and while that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re canon — just because someone works on a show doesn’t mean they can’t have fun and make silly art, after all. The top two are very clearly non-canon from how Hunter is dressed — but consider for a moment this: the top two were drawn by Dana Terrace, the creator of the show, and even featured pretty consistent scarring that we haven’t seen on the show yet (Terrace draws Hunter with a scar on his left arm both times. The scar seems to be high enough on his arm that his short sleeve outfit could conceivably hide it), and the bottom one is a behind the scenes showcase of how Hunter almost looked in Labyrinth Runner. And the all show Hunter without noticeable scars or limb differences in his hands. And they show his hands at several different angles, too — front, back, palms up and down.

Again, these drawings aren’t canon, but they were either done by the person who created Hunter or were almost canon by almost appearing on the show. It’s possible Dana Terrace could be pulling an Alex Hirst and deceiving us with her art, but honestly that doesn’t seem like her MO. Likewise, it’s possible that the Hunter designs were discarded specifically because they showed his hands ungloved, but I’m pretty sure that given the focus on Hunter’s hands in the past, the designers would not be left in the dark when making alt outfits for him (and the derby outfit just held more narrative weight than if they made Hunter a new outfit completely)

So if Hunter doesn’t have anything visually different about his hands, why does the camera focus on them repeatedly and why hasn’t he appeared without gloves on the show yet?

Here’s a couple ideas:

A) they’re a way to show vulnerability and isolation

Hunter looks at his hands in almost confusion after high fiving Gus, and given how he didn’t understand being hugged later in the episode (and his overall isolation from other teens), he might not understand what a high five is. He might have even been startled by it, going off his reaction. And when his hand shook, it was after watching a stone bird crumble while he held it — he was probably thinking about Flapjack, whose life he has reason to worry about, given Belos’s stance on palismen

A lot of people start to shake from anxiety, fear, and exhaustion, too, and given Hunter’s trauma and implied sleep deprivation it isn’t surprising that he’d show physical signs of them

The TOH crew could also just be using gloves to symbolize being separated from the rest of the world, like how in Frozen they were used to symbolize hiding and lies. Given that Hunters arc includes him forming healthy relationships when he was abused and isolated in the past, there could be a huge Elsa moment coming up where he rips the gloves off for good

B) While Hunter might not have physical scars, his hands could still be damaged

Hands are incredibly sensitive, after all. They’re full of nerve endings and are pretty darn fragile all things considered. Hunter is a child soldier, and even though he was given a magic staff by Belos, it’s stated he didn’t get it until after he had become Golden Guard — he, as a non-magic child had to go through the same gruesome training teenage and adult witches had to. There’s also the fact that Belos is all but outright shown to physically abuse him.

Odds are he’s broken fingers or damaged nerves in the past, and while he’s shown to be pretty dexterous, he could still have flare ups of pain (something that could also be triggered by trauma) or might just not be able to physically feel things the way someone with undamaged might feel — they could be hypersensitive or numb and the gloves provide him with a layer of sensation dampening or could help him with his grip

The Owl House is not a show that shies away from disability in its main characters, metaphorically, fantastically, or literally — Eda’s curse is played completely one for one as a metaphor for chronic illness, and Luz is written as neurodivergent. Hunter is already written as someone with PTSD and anxiety, and his magic staffs could be seen as mobility aids. I could totally see TOH showcasing someone with an invisible disability by having a character have not-visibly different but still not completely abled hands

C) hands are a minor symbol for either the Emperor’s Coven, or for the abuse Hunter has endured. Specifically humanoid vs non-humanoid hands

We’ve seen Belos grip Hunter’s shoulder tight enough to at least be comfortable while Belos’s was, essentially, falling apart.

Belos has also struck walls in front of Hunter hard enough to crack them while Hunter turned away, and even nearly cut Hunter’s face, while in similar gooped up states

And while Hunter isn’t exactly popular in the Emperor’s Coven, Kikimora is debatably the one in the coven who hates him the most, even trying to outright kill him at points, and her entire thing is being a hand demon

Lastly, Darius

Darius in second went from being just another adult who mistreated Hunter to being one of Hunter’s biggest allies and positive parental figures. And it’s visually shown in how his hand went from a monster’s to humanoid’s

While not every character with inhuman hands is evil on this show, the focus on Hunter’s hands vs his enemies and allies could just be simple visual contrast.

D) it could be foreshadowing to a future injury

Granted, I don’t have as much evidence for this one, so it’s just speculation, but like. The audience’s attention is only drawn to Hunter’s hands because it’s meant to be on Hunter’s hands. What if what we’re supposed to take notice of is the fact that Hunter’s hands, though hidden by gloves, are what you expect from hands — unscarred, unhurt, and paired off. Hunter currently has a bounty on his head, after all. Him being killed off just feels kinda unlikely, but I can see him being injured, maybe with a gory discretion shot (not gonna name the show, but we do know Disney is willing to go there)

Maybe a scene of Hunter without his gloves to really bring the audience’s focus in, followed by him being hurt or even losing a hand

@rudeboimonster To be honest, no idea, it’s a lot of trial and error usually. Finding a style for characters is very difficult, it’s a process sort of akin to designing an OC. But if it’s any help at all, I take into account many factors: first sort of being the vibe I want to capture, emergency exit (for example) is intended to be grungy “salmon run” with inspirations from hiphop and heavy metal, (the baggy pants, the camo print, the caps + the leather , spikes, / latex + the tape, the use of orange and overalls loosely resembling grizzco uniforms, etc.) sort of leaning into these genres sort of made it easier for me to design outfits for these characters, I learned that when you seek out “outfits” you sort of lose the initial touch and stray from the genres, so instead I searched directly on what artists who dedicate themself to these genres wear, I assume this was the process done while designing some of (CANON) Pearl and Marina’s outfits as well, lol, seeing that you could point at clothing items and draw a connection with irl hiphop artists, SAME W FRYE AND SHIVER FOR THAT MATTER, with the cultural influences.

Another thing: drawing Inspiration from concepts rather than clothing, I think in the context of dressing up idol characters: this is plenty more fun. I for sure have a few (not yet posted wips) that I really do enjoy because they incorporate things that aren’t clothing recreated AS clothing items, like I think if you stared at an object long enough you’d be surprised what you could draw from it. I also tend to include some personal aspects of fashion I really love: the skirt/pants combo, baseball caps, transparent visors… all that crap lol. You’ll notice I tend to give my characters white tshirts gym shorts or baseball caps and this is for the sake of simplicity but it’s also just, fashion I enjoy. I’m sure you’d also see this with other artists, maybe theirs are hoodies instead lol.. Though. I’m.. A bit of a maximalist so anything decora or crowded usually grabs my attention.

I think staying away from (this part here is personal opinion, I don’t do this every time, but to me this helped me better develop a style) Pinterest aesthetics or “outfit inspo” helps. Only because I think Pinterest outfits tend to be a watered down version of the product you’re searching for, since they try and be a bit more “fashionable” or easily digestible. That isn’t to say Pinterest is a bad place to find inspo, but I really did notice certain fashion genres aren’t very present there. I, instead look at online personalities, I do this only because you can better get a glimpse at what people- who dedicate themselves to fashion or certain ideas— wear casually outside of a collage of colorful vaguely match-y clothing. Following alt spaces or socials saved my lifeee.

Some examples I’m proud of: Pearl’s oversized jacket, the holes in the side of her shorts, the fact she’s got a price tag still on, Marina’s layered set, the checkered print bandanna around her tentacle, the mad-chemical punk aesthetic Callie has, the spikes the tubes the allusion to her canon outfit. All that stuff.

Sometimes I grit my teeth and stare at an Oc that isn’t mine and go, “I could dress them so well,” but unfortunately it’s not my toy.
