okay the neuroimmune talk at dysautonomia international is really cool.
(it's also extremely nice every year to hear a bunch of researchers and clinicians affirm that the medical institution needs to do significantly better than they are now, because they are actively contributing to worse health outcomes in patients. i want to make all my doctors sit down for a lecture.)

DPXDC prompt. Dead on main. Someone who knows you better than you know yourself.
Perhaps Fentons are not able to recognize their child, despite the fact that they hunt him day after day. But for childhood friends, who saw each other in absolutely ridiculous situations that parents are never allowed to know about, just one sneeze and a bored sigh is enough to realize that this weirdo fighting next to him is the same guy with whom you tasted soap and then stood looking at each other from different corners and giggling.
And so, the dialogue after the battle with the creatures of Infinite Realms, to which Constantine had to invite a potential ally not yet approved by the League:
Phantom: Well, mom always said you were bad news...But a crime lord, seriously? What happened to your plans to become a literature teacher? Red Hood: Hey! For Gotham, this is a very high-paying in-demand job. And I don't want to hear anything from Casper. At least I have my own business. What kind of part-time job do you have? Are you selling sheets to your buddies from this green goo? Phantom: This is ectoplasm. And they're not my friends, and anyway… Constantine: King Phantom, do you know Red Hood? Phantom: Do I know him? Ha! This street rat was Splinter of my beginnings until my family moved out of Gotham.
Red Hood: Wait, wait a minute. Phah...Holy shit. I thought I was the best example of what it means to be a disappointment to a family, but you beat me here. Oh, man, only you...The ghost king who is the son of the ghost hunters? Seriously? Hahah! I thought your rebellious phase ended the moment you told your father that you wanted to be an astronaut and not inherit the family business.
Danny*groans and covers his face with his hands*: My life is over.
Red Hood: Literally~ No, of course I always knew that your parents' disregard for safety in the laboratory would someday kill someone, but I didn't really expect this? Like, wow… Phantom: What makes you think it was an incident in the lab? I mean, there are so many possibilities around. It's ridiculous and…hah Red Hood: Dude, look me straight in the face and tell me I'm wrong if you dare. Phantom:…Fuck you, stupid bookworm. Red Hood: Stubborn nerd. Phantom: Red bucket! Red Hood: Pale toadstool! Nightwing: Um, can you guys please stop fighting? Red Hood: What are you talking about? This is how we always communicate. Phantom: Yeah! Well, in our defense, my sister always thought we both could use a therapist. Oh, man, he made me lose my train of thought. Where were we, J? Red Hood: Since when are you able to think? And I complimented your new hair and skin color. Phantom: Right, right… But, hey, not all of my parents' hypotheses really have a right to exist, and you know it! Hm, did I mention that you're built like a fridge and how does this leather jacket suit you? Red Hood: I believe not. And who's talking about your parents' work? You were an airhead when you were alive too to be honest. And as I see it, not much has changed. Why the hell are you still starting a fight with puns? Stop telling your opponent your position. This is terribly stupid! Phantom: Oh, please, these ghosts are definitely not a threat to me. What's wrong with having a little fun? The fact that you don't have weapons to handle something stronger than a blob ghost is your problem not mine, loser. But let's get back to our greetings. Red Hood: Sure. Then listen here…
~~~~~
Nightwing: Jay, why didn't you say right away that you knew Phantom? We've wasted so much time wondering if it's worth summoning him, and you just stood there and said nothing. Red Hood: Pfff…Because I didn't know that until today. He used to be human. And we haven't seen each other for a long time. So how was I to know that he would take such a ridiculous pseudonym? Nightwing: Then why the hell didn't you feel worried about teasing this creature? Red Hood: Why should I? It's just Danny.
~~~~
Tucker: Oh man, 84 murders, attempts to kill Joker and to much fights with Batman and Black Mask and… Danny: Yeah, yeah. It's all very interesting, but it's not what I asked you to find. Get to the point, Tucker. What I will wear to our dinner tonight depends on this. Tucker: Seriously? As far as I'm concerned, whether he's single or not is less important than all this shit. Aren't you afraid to show up at his house? Danny: I'm invited. And for that matter, I'm Amity Park's former public enemy number one. Which one of us should be worried, hah? So he's not dating anyone, right? Don't try to distract me. Tucker: Dude! Danny: Ugh, in my experience, when he acts like he's lost his mind, he usually has good reasons for it. And if not, given some of the events of my alternative future, I have no right to judge him, so…

Growing Up Too Fast!~ Part 2!
The wind was now crisp and slightly cold as the waves were audible. The sun was just nearly starting to set as you has just been minding you’re own business in your crop top with a soft smile while you heard Brook playing the violin for the distance. ‘At least he doesn’t have anything to say about me growing up…’ you thought to yourself as a soft sigh escaped your lips.
You just couldn’t understand why they didn’t want you to grow up. Did you look like a toddler still to them? You honestly thought it was ridiculous but didn’t say more and just suspected and assumed they got over it. They wouldn’t bother you about it any more right?
Boy were you wrong.
Little did you know that a certain skeleton was creeping up on you from behind…
“Why hello there Y/N! How are you doing on this fine evening?” A calm and soothing voice said. You jumped slightly and blinked, turning around to realize it was only Brook but being a skeleton did not help to make you not feel less scared, especially when he creeped up on you all the time. You quickly regained your composure and smiled softly up at the 7 feet devil fruit user.
“Oh!…hey Brook..I’m fine how are you..? Your song sounded beautiful back there, I could hear it all the way from here!…did you need anything?”
You asked politely with a smile, standing up from your sitting position to look up at him properly. There you saw the skeletons hollow like holes that were supposed to be his eyes widen slightly, you raised an eyebrow but deep down you know what was coming.
“Um Y/N pardon me but I seem to notice that your shirt..did half of it get ripped or something?” The skeleton asked softly while staring down at you. Your reaction was to sigh in frustration, eyebrows furrowing like when you were always angry.
“No! It’s a crop top..! Why does everyone keep asking that??” You said in a bit of an angry tone but you sighed to calm yourself down.
“Sorry I blew up on you..it’s just everyone has been acting so weird lately..” you said in a softer tone. The skeleton tilted his head and sat down on the floor, which you did as well right beside him. “What do you mean by that Y/N..?” He asked as he picked up his violin and started to play a soothing melody.
You sighed softly and stared out at the sea. The wind blew and a soft breeze hit your skin as you closed yours eyes for a second then opened them once again.
“Well it’s just…everyone just seems to be obsessed with me being a little kid again..when I tried on this dress that was pretty cute, Sanji and Zoro had a big problem with it..” you rolled your eyes. “And just before I came here Luffy was going on about my shirt and how he gave me piggyback rides as a little girl! I don’t get it! I’m literally a teen now!…why can’t they just accept that..?” You then said while looking down at the floor boards with a sigh.
Brook had stopped playing by now and turned towards you. His stare almost intense as he placed his bony hand on your shoulder to calm you.
“Well Y/N you must understand their point of view..when you were just a baby, floating out in a carriage in the sea they took care of you..loved you and fed you..
Just after a day they swore to never give you back..”
He muttered while thinking towards the memories of what the crew had told him. Confused you looked up at him and raised an eyebrow not catching what he said. “Hm?..they what?..” Brook the blinked and shook his head. “Oh nothing..just letting thoughts wonder..but the point is Y/N is that we all love you..and care for you..we just want the best for you..”
“Would you for me to have a talk with them perhaps?..” he asked his voice softening even more. You nodded slowly and disregarded the weird behavior. Smiling sweetly, “Yes! Please…” he nodded and then turned back at the sea like he was thinking of something.
“Okay I will..but Y/N?”
“Hm?..”
“…you can get mad however you’d like but know that you cannot leave..”
..
You blinked. Confused and a bit frightened with how his voice seemed to deepen at the last sentence but before you could even comprehend or ask him what that meant, Usopp then announced, rather loudly that dinner was ready. Brook soon got up, acting as if his sudden change in attitude never happened.
“Oh what pleasant timing shall we go Y/N?” And without a thought he started to hum. Walking away with his cane, you could already hear the noise and chatter coming from the kitchen as you sighed. Not even feeling hungry you thought about skipping dinner but that would only cause then to worry and make Luffy burst through your door.
You sighed softly and mentally prepared yourself. You very much needed the preparation because when you walked into the kitchen the room, you noticed that the noise quieted down a bit. Some were giving you weird looks or frowns and some even glares but you just sighed and ignored it. ‘I’m not going to continue being a little baby for them..’ you thought as you sat down and ate your food silently.
The crew continued their chatter but much silently now. You just kept your head down and ate but then an idea suddenly popped into your head, you’ve never really talked about boys before…except..
~Flashback~..
“Now remember Y/N..if a boy besides us ever tried to talk to you..just tell us okay?..” Sanji said as he was pouring your tea in a small cute cup.Zoro was leaning on the wall with his arms crossed and sharply turned towards you and him.
“Yea..we’ll have no problem kicking their asses..and no dating until fifty, got it?”
He said in a monotone voice, one that sounded authoritative but somewhat soft to you. Before you could even respond though Zoro got a kick to the face with a comically red and angry expression.
“You asshole!! Don’t tell her that! You shouldn’t make things so obvious moss head!!”
You just blinked and shrugged, taking a sip a of your tea.
~End of flashback~
An evil smile crept up on your face as you lazily wrapped your shoulder around Luffy, of course he didn’t seemed to mind and softly grinned at you.
He wouldn’t be grinning for long though..
“Ah…I agree that I’m growing up so fast aren’t I~..? Soon I’ll get a boyfriend..”
“…Y/N..”
“And sooner or later..! I’ll even get married hah!~..Nami and Robin will sure to be my bridesmaids!…I’ll eventually have to move ou-”
Your sentence was interrupted by the table shaking and the sounds of three figures standing up abruptly. Luffy had gotten out of your grasp and had a dark shadow covering his eyes..the rest of the crew were in a silent rage.
Just what were you in for?…
.

Garden of Secrets [17] - Sneak Peek
Tumblr media
If you couldn’t take care of your garden and grow flowers, you were just going to read about them instead.
You were quite certain that this book was rather new, and you had a feeling Benedict had stacked up multiple shelves in the library with whatever book he could find on plants and flowers without telling you. The hardcover was so smooth that for a second you just ran your fingertips over the engraving over it, then made yourself comfortable by resting your feet on the other side of the bench, leaning your back against the arm of the bench. You placed the book on your legs, the peaceful sound of the water fountain in the evening surrounding you, making you heave a sigh. Your eyes stole a quick glance at the lit-up window of Benedict’s study but then you frowned and opened the book, ready to lose yourself in the illustrations and the information about flowers.
You were so engrossed by the book that after hours you still hadn’t even looked up once, and it was only when you heard someone clear their throat that your head shot up. Benedict shot you that crooked smile, crossing his arms and leaning sideways to the entrance of gazebo.
“Riveting read?”
“Quite so,” you said as you held up the book so that he could see the title, then motioned at the window of his study. “Have you already finished Charlotte’s illustrations?”
“Oh she told you?”
“Mm hm,” you said. “She even said I could read some of her completed stories.”
Benedict raised his brows. “She must really like you,” he said. “I had to beg her all those years ago just to read one of them.”
You shot him a grin. “Perhaps I’m stealing your best friend.”
“Looks like it,” he played along. “How was the park?”
You thought for a moment, Charlotte’s question about your parents echoing in your ears before you cleared your throat.
“It was fine,” you said. “Less so when I heard Bess is the Locusta of plants.”
“She poisons her plants?”
“In a way yes,” you said. “Apparently she watered her roses three times a day.”
“I’m guessing from the tone of your voice and the appalled look on your face that it’s the wrong thing to do?”
You shot him a lighthearted glare. “Good guess.”
Benedict chuckled and nodded in the direction of the house. “Are you coming or?”
You hesitated for a second, then shook your head.
“You go ahead,” you said. “I have a feeling that sleep will evade me tonight.”
“Why?”
You tried to ignore the shiver shooting through you upon remembering your nightmare, and after today’s conversation with Charlotte about your parents, you just knew you would not be getting a good night’s sleep tonight.
And it wasn’t as if you could just keep waking Benedict up, that had to be annoying for him you were sure.
“Just a feeling,” you shrugged your shoulders. “You should go to sleep though. I heard you barely left your studio the whole day, you must be exhausted.”
Benedict pulled his brows together. “Who told you that?”
You narrowed your eyes at him, then grinned.
“The housekeeper likes me better than she likes you I suppose.”
His jaw dropped. “Mrs. Alton…” he said with a shake of his head. “There I thought we had something special.”
You scoffed a laugh and his eyes searched your face, his smile slightly fading.
“Are you alright though?”
You bit inside your cheek and nodded.
“Sure,” you lied. “I’ll just um—I just need some distraction I guess. I mean here is peaceful but…” you trailed off. “Inside my head is not, sometimes.”
“I could tell,” he said softly and you took a deep breath.
“One of those nights,” you said. “I’ll be fine.”
He thought for a moment, his gaze on you as if he was trying to decide on something, then he cleared his throat.
“A distraction, you say?”
You nodded your head and he tilted his head, that mischievous smile curling his lips again.
“Do you want to go to a party?”

Coolness
A/N: Trying to write Aventurine on top of a very energetic OC for the first time was... an experience LMAO. If you happen to enjoy this work, thank you very much. CW: Xiwu gets hit by a car but it's all dandy, brief mentions of alcohol, OOC-ness and not beta read, pre-2.2 release
Before coming to Penacony, Xiwu had no idea that price tags could be so long. But then again, a lot of these clothes and accessories were shinier and fancier than what she normally saw. Such a thing couldn’t be helped, she supposed, though it did make her think about how many centuries of saving credits it would take before she could afford a piece.
What was it that March said? Something like, if it was made completely from scratch, it was bound to be expensive because it means they were… they were… “hot culture”? Sounded close enough. But aren’t all things made from scratch? What’s the difference?
She couldn’t remember how the conversation continued from there.
“Ms. Xiwu?”
“Hm? This voice…” She turned around, and was met with a blonde man wearing a fancy blue-green suit and a pair of gold-rimmed shades. With a cheery grin, she greeted, “Mr. Jinkou!”
The man blinked and awkwardly laughed.
“Ah… pardon?”
Xiwu hadn’t intended to blurt that out. She corrected herself, “Um… Mr. Aventurine!”
With how purposefully she said it, he wondered if “Mr. Jinkou” was his designated nickname… Perhaps he should ask later how she came upon it.
“I didn’t think I would run into you here,” she remarked.
“Neither did I, my friend.” Aventurine then noticed the mess of ice cream at the corner of her mouth. “Maybe I should have expected that even a doctor cannot resist Penacony’s finest treats.”
Seeing her confusion, he tapped his own face with a finger.
“Ah…!” Xiwu hurriedly swiped off the mess with a thumb and cleared her throat, pretending her face wasn’t flushed with embarrassment. “Ahem… so, what brings you here?”
“It seems, after completing my mission, the IPC saw fit to give me the next few weeks off as vacation. I thought I’d start off by visiting the boutiques here. The watches they sell here are one-of-a-kind, or so I’ve been told by many.”
She gasped. With a hand to her mouth, she panicked, “Watches? Is yours broken? We didn’t break it earlier, did we—?”
Aventurine chuckled and waved it off.
“You’re working yourself up over nothing, my friend. It’s still perfectly fine, which is rather lucky with all things considered. But… it doesn’t hurt to add to my collection.”
“Ohh, I see.”
Xiwu sighed in relief.
Her relaxed cheeriness immediately came back, as if their “fight to the death” in the plaza never happened. Aventurine approached her with the expectation that she would warily watch every move he made. Even if she wasn’t the particularly cautious type, she knew nothing about him.
So to be proven wrong like this… was a strange surprise.
“Say, how about you join me for today?” he suggested.
“Hmm…” Xiwu tilted her head as she contemplated the choice. “I’m happy with the offer, but I don’t really know how to… what’s the word… appraise? I don’t really know how to appraise these things. Maybe someone else from the Express could make better company for this.”
“That’s perfectly fine,” he assured her. “I wanted to invite you specifically to relax and chat with me. Such opportunities are rare in this line of work anyway, especially in my position.”
“When you put it that way, sure! I’ll come along.”
With her hands tucked behind her back and large exaggerated steps, Xiwu followed beside him. Her head constantly turned as she looked at the displays. On the other hand, Aventurine seemed much more accustomed to the scenery.
She began to wonder if he was bored already.
“You’re staring at me,” he playfully said. “What’s on your mind, dear Nameless?”
“Oh, well, it’s just that you don’t seem very impressed. I guess when you’re so high up with a company like the IPC, you see these kinds of sparkly things everyday.”
“Perhaps. It’s certainly important to be knowledgable and well-acquainted with the finer things in life to establish relations with the wealthy,” he agreed. “But it’s not like this is all I surround myself with. I did agree to a friendship with you and the Express, didn’t I?”
“That’s true, even if it’s difficult to imagine you… well, somewhere else.”
“Haha! I suppose that’s a compliment.”
Before Aventurine could continue, Xiwu suddenly stopped in her tracks and pointed past him: “Ah! Look at that!”
“Huh?”
She approached the display, hovering so close that her breath left a light fog on the glass. The Stoneheart stood beside her to take a closer look.
“I suppose the craftsmanship is decent… Though I’m surprised something like this caught your eye,” he said.
“Cause it looks like the one you wore when we first met.”
Aventurine inspected it again. It was a dark blue top hat, most likely made of satin—he assumes. The black band was decorated with a matching half-ribbon, a buckle embedded with a bright blue jewel, and two overtly large feathers. Goose feathers? He couldn’t help but wonder if Xiwu rarely saw such hats before to immediately compare this to his.
“Doesn’t it?” she pressed, her eyes large and expectant.
“Ah. I’m… flattered.”
And certainly, there was… some respect, if that was the word he had to use, to be had for how Xiwu could turn conversations as she pleased.
“Why don’t we look inside this one?” she suggested. “Maybe we’ll find a good watch for you!”
She was already running into the boutique, not that Aventurine had a particular reason to refuse. As soon as the store worker noticed the Stoneheart, he quickly bowed low and eagerly greeted, “Welcome, esteemed guest! Please feel free to ask for assistance!”
Of course, Aventurine saw how the worker eyed his accessories so closely. No one could miss such a flagrant flash of gold.
“Certainly,” he said as he nonchalantly handed over a wad of credits.
He didn’t keep exact count, but it was somewhere around ten thousand credits. That was the amount he usually passed out as goodwill.
“Mr. Aventurine, look at this!”
Xiwu gestured at him from the back of the store, where they kept the array of watches for sale in a glass case. Her eyes were focused on a pale yellow watch with green-tipped feathers—thankfully not too bright to look at for a long time. Though if Aventurine had to comment, he was beginning to think that she had come to associate him with all birds regardless of the kind or color.
“An ordinary watch, it seems. Or rather…”
The store worker from before shuffled over to assist: “The madam has a wonderful eye! You see, our Dreamscape watchmakers took inspiration from the Origami birds that helped build Penacony. This watch can be folded and tucked into any place for safekeeping.”
He was watching them like a hawk.
Aventurine redirected his attention to the watch. It wasn’t cheaply made, to be sure, and Xiwu seemed so proud of her find.
He eventually settled with: “A kind suggestion, Ms. Xiwu, but I’m not particularly concerned about misplacing my things.”
She took it well in stride and nodded. She then furrowed her brows as she continued looking over the display, while Aventurine kept her in his peripherals.
The Stoneheart definitely had his fair share of people kissing up to him, hoping for a chance to borrow or even take some of his influence. With those years of observation, he could only say… Xiwu’s attempts, if it could be called that, are comparably… earnest. Why? What was the point of it?
“What about this one, Mr. Aventurine?”
“Which one?”
The store worker realized which one Xiwu had been pointing at and spoke up, “Ah, another excellent suggestion from the madam! It is made to reflect the wearer’s mood, you see. This is a feat that only Penacony’s finest watchmakers can achieve!”
“That sounds cool, doesn’t it!” Xiwu asked, rather giddy.
“Why don’t you try it on for yourself?” the store worker suggested. “Perhaps the madam can go first?”
“Sure!”
The store worker took the watch from the case and adeptly tied the band around Xiwu’s wrist. Within seconds, the case changed colors and the band became sparkling gold.
“It appears that the madam is quite happy,” he announced.
“Whoaa! Mr. Aventurine, look, look! I wonder how they did that… C’mon, you should try it too.”
“Well, I can’t possibly refuse such enthusiasm. If you don’t mind, sir.”
Aventurine himself was becoming curious what the watch would sense in him. He held out his own wrist and the store worker quickly transferred it over. Suddenly, the seconds felt like minutes as he stared at the case intensely. Surely it would say the same thing as it did for Xiwu…?
The case grew dark and the band became a dull silver. As if that wasn’t enough, it felt as though the small clock hands were trembling within the case.
“Ah, um… it appears the esteemed guest is feeling anxious,” the store worker announced after checking several times.
“Hm? Anxious…?” Xiwu repeated.
Laughter filled the corner of the boutique as Aventurine swiftly took off the watch and returned it to the store worker’s hands.
“Perhaps there might be a manufacturing error,” he said. “Either way, it would be much more easier if I were to just switch out my watches.”
“That can’t possibly—.”
Aventurine placed a stack of twenty thousand credits in the store worker’s hands. Yes, that had to be the explanation, he was sure of it. What could he be anxious about in this moment? There was nothing at stake, nothing to be gambled for. The watch had to have been broken someway somehow.
“Thank you for your service. Hopefully, you will re-examine the watch in a timely manner, and I just might return to this lovely establishment another day.” He then faced Xiwu and gestured towards the door. “I’m feeling a bit parched at the moment. Why don’t we go for some refreshments before we continue?”
Xiwu blinked, confused at the change of pace.
“Oh um, okay.”
Aventurine was quiet as they stepped out. His face hadn’t changed at all, but Xiwu couldn’t shake off the possibility that he was displeased.
Could it be…? That she wasn’t a good enough shopping partner?! That had to be it, it must be because her choices were so awful that his mood had been horribly soured beyond repair! He was only saying all those things to be polite! This wouldn’t have happened if it was Mr. Yang or Ms. Himeko! Quick, how would they help him feel better?
“Um… uh, so where did you want to go for refreshments, Mr. Aventurine?” she sheepishly asked.
He must have been deep in thought. It took a while for him to answer.
“There’s a small bar in Aideen Park. I’m sure you’ll enjoy their selections.”
“Oh… bleh, beer.” Xiwu realized what she had said aloud and backtracked, “I mean! Um… it sounds like a… very sophisticated place to be…?”
Aventurine chuckled. It was still difficult to gauge his mood, but maybe he wasn’t as angry as she initially thought.
“You have no need to worry, my friend. Bars don’t only serve alcohol, especially the ones here in Penacony. They’ll hardly mind serving you SoulGlad straight from the bottle.”
He caught onto the way she tried to tiptoe around him. She must still be wary from earlier as expected, and she was only trying to stay in his good graces out of caution.
“Wait, Mr. Aventurine.”
But then again, as he thought back on it, she didn’t look that terrified during the confrontation… How much did it really weigh on her mind?
“Mr. Aventurine?”
Understanding each Express member will help in future collaborations, certainly, but two of the members thus far have proven to be slightly more difficult than Aventurine anticipated.
“Mr. Aventurine, move over!”
He was jarred out of his head when he was pushed forward. He quickly regained balance, but he heard a loud yelp and honking from just behind him.
“M-Ms. Xiwu??”
By the time he turned around, Xiwu was already on the floor. The vehicle swerved around her fallen body and drove off without losing speed. Before he could reach a hand out, she sat up with large tears welling up in her eyes.
“Owww!! That hurts a lot!!” she cried.
“Apologies, my friend. I was… preoccupied and…”
Xiwu gingerly rubbed at her hip for a few moments. She then blinked and slowly stood up, her tears disappearing just as quickly.
“Oh, right… They said things don’t really hurt in this dream world. Phew, but that was a bit scary. At least it wasn’t that big of a car.” She looked into Aventurine’s eyes, so directly he was nearly startled, and asked, “What about you? I didn’t push you too hard, did I?”
“No...? You didn’t.”
“Okay, back to Aideen Park then!”
A genuine burst of laughter unexpectedly left Aventurine’s mouth, earning a stare of bewilderment.
“You’re too funny, Ms. Xiwu! I wasn’t expecting your concern was… for me, I suppose. And I must say… how should I put it? You certainly have a talent for brushing things off.”
Xiwu puffed up her chest as if she was rather proud. Mr. Aventurine wasn’t angry with her after all! Or if he was, he certainly isn’t right now. This made her quite relieved.
“Hehe! I’m very mature like Ms. Himeko and Mr. Yang, right? You see, with age comes wisdom!” she said. “ ‘You mustn’t let grudges ruin the beauty of flowers’! Or… uh, wait… that line didn’t come out right. How did they say it in the drama… Mrgh… I can’t remember…”
Wait... with age? Aventurine repeated to himself. He had no time to properly ponder this new piece of information.
She grew embarrassed again as she struggled with her memory. To fill the suddenly unbearable silence, Xiwu started tugging on his sleeves forward—which he had to note, was not in the direction of Aideen Park.
“Anyways! Let’s go, Mr. Aventurine! Some ice cream will make anyone feel better and then we can go back to shopping until you find something you like! And then your trip won’t be a waste and you won’t regret hanging out with me!”
“Wait, wait, Ms. Xiwu! You’re stretching the sleeve!”

Diabolik Lovers LOST EDEN ー Carla Dark [04]
Tumblr media
ー The scene starts in the saloon
Yui: ( Um...The cover of this book is the same as this one, so they must surely belong to the same series, right...? )
Excuse me...Carla-san? I believe I’m done organizing everything you asked me to.
Carla: Show me. I shall check your work.
*Rustle*
Carla: ...
Hooh. Looks good.
Yui: I see. I’m glad...
Carla: Heh. I suppose you make for a fine assistant.
Onto the next task then, I would like to organize the writings on top of that desk the same way.
Yui: Okay, I understand.
*TIMESKIP*
*Rustle*
Yui: ( I’m pretty sure these belong together... )
( ...I’m sure I would be able to do this quicker if I was able to read Demon language. )
( But this is the best I can do for now... )
...?
( I wonder what kind of document this is? It’s different from the others...It’s rather big as well. )
( Also, there’s a strange illustration on it... )
Hey, Carla-san.
Carla: Yes?
Yui: About this document, it seems quite a bit different from the other ones.
Not only is it large, I have no idea where to categorize it.
Carla: Hm?
ー Carla approaches her
*Rustle*
Carla: ーー Hooh? This one?
Yui: Kyah!
Carla: Hm? What’s wrong?
Yui: N-Nothing. You just caught me a bit by surprise, that’s all...
( I mean, he suddenly leaned over my shoulder from behind and whispered in my ear...! )
Carla: ーー Aah. I see. I suppose I cannot blame you for not knowing.
It’s an old map of the Demon World showing the different power relationships.
Yui: A power map...
Carla: It displays the hierarchy between the different species. Things are quite a bit different now, however.
I suppose there is little point in telling you about the power struggle between the different clans.
However, I suppose it would not hurt you to have some knowledge on the map.
Yui: Since it’s a map, we should be able to see Banmaden on it as well, right?
Carla: Yes. Although it will only be a rough estimate since the map is not very detailled.
Well then, where do you think Banmaden is. Try pointing to it.
Yui: Eh?
( Banmaden’s location...!? I have no clue. )
Carla: Show it on the map with your finger. Come on.
Yui: ...
Selection
→ Point somewhere at random (S)
Yui: ( ...I don’t know anywhere, so might as well point somewhere at random. )
Around here...perhaps?
Carla: Wrong.
Yui: Then...Maybe here?
Carla: Wrong again.
Yui: ( Uu...I guess this won’t work. )
( Right. If only I could get some sort of hint...! )
Um...Carla-san?
Carla: Hm?
Yui: Could I get a hint? It can be something small.
Carla: ...
ーー No. I guess it’s no use after all.
Yui: ...
Carla: Try to figure it out yourself instead.
Yui: ( That’s easy for him to say...But I’ve never put much thought into the Demon World’s lay-out... )
Then...Around here, perhaps?
Carla: No.
Yui: Ugh...
Carla: Heh. You’re surprisingly persistent.
Yui: Yes...?
Carla: If you do not know, simply say so.
I never said I would not be willing to teach you.
Yui: ...
( But he refused to give me a hint. )
( So I figured he definitely wouldn’t tell me either, but I guess that isn’t the case... )
...Tell me, please.
Carla: I shall do just that then.
Say that you don’t know (M)
Yui: ( ...I could look at this map forever, I have no idea... )
( I’ll just honestly admit to not knowing. )
I’m sorry, I have no clue, so could you tell me...?
Carla: ーー Did you try and figure it out yourself?
Yui: Even if I tried to, I wouldn’t even know where to start...
Carla: I wish to help me with my work, I would hope you would hone your deductive skills and ability to judge a situtation a little. ーー Oh well, I suppose it is fine.
Well then, let me show you.
*Rustle*
Yui: ...
( His large hand is wrapped around my own. )
( How odd...All he’s doing is holding my hand, but it feels as if he’s embracing me. )
Carla: Look closely. Banmaden is right over here.
Yui: ...Yes.
( It’s somewhere completely different than I thought... )
Carla: You should have been able to figure that one out when considering the various benefits the location serves.
But I suppose that would be asking a little too much of you. I shall let it slide for now.
...Hm?
...I see. Back then, that place had already beenーー
...Heh. Fascinating. Almost as if it is telling me to go there.
Yui: ( ...I wonder what he’s going on about? He suddenly started mumbling something while looking at one specific spot on the map... )
Carla: Listen, Yui. If you move North from here.
Yui: ...? There’s a small plot of land on the far North.
But what exactly is this...?
Carla: ...You may remain ignorant for now. You shall find out sooner or later, whether you like it or not.
...Fufu. That land, huh?
Yui: ...
( My heart starts beating faster when I can feel his breath against my ear... )
( I have no clue what he’s going on about but... )
( It seems as if something has got him excited...I can’t help but get that impressionーー )

Happy Birthday, Yu and Rei! To celebrate the occasion, I decided to finally post this translation here! (It was previously only available as a Google Doc)

Yu: Yu and Rei’s… dwindling outlets!
Rei: …Lingering regrets.

STORY
Yu: Hey there, I’m Yu! And I’m here… to haunt the pants off of you!
Amitie: EEEK! Don’t just jump out and scare me like that, geez!
Yu: Hey, young lady over there! Won’t you come and join us on our skyward vacation as a whole new ghost!?
Raffina: No thank you! As if I would ever lower myself to becoming something that can’t have these beautiful legs!
Yu: Heyo, nice girl over there! Sorry to just pop in but here comes a POP QUIZ!
Lidelle: Eek! W…W-W…What is it about…?
Yu: What never eats and never sleeps, and yet always stays full of energy and healthy!?
Lidelle: Um… well… That’s, uh…
Yu: The answer is: A ghost! So it’s time for you to become a ghost too!
Lidelle: N…Nooooo! Please, stop it!
Yu: Oho, young man over there!
Sig: GOODBYE.
-
Yu: Whoa, today sure was fun again! Right, Rei?
Rei: Yeah. Sure was.
Yu: Right! So, so, so! Let’s keep at it! Today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow! As long as I’m with you, Rei, life as a ghost will never be boring!
Rei: Hm…
Yu: Huuuuh? Rei, what’s wrong…? You look like you’re thinking about something.
Rei: Yeah, I guess I’ve been thinking… a bit lately…
Yu: Well if that’s how it is! Never fear! For Yu is here! Doesn’t matter what it is that you’re wondering about! I’ll have it figured out in a jiffy!
Rei: So, why… Why are we ghosts…? Is what I’ve been wondering…
Yu: Huuuuh? What’cha mean?
Rei: I’ve been a ghost as long as I can think… But, why? Why am I like this…? I just can’t remember anything from before…
Yu: Hmmmmm….! Wow, you came up with some trivia even I can’t give an answer to!
Rei: Yu…
Yu: Alrighty, let’s go and ask someone who looks like they might know!
Rei: Huh…?
Yu: Let’s go! Go! Ghost step ahead!
Rei: Step… without legs…?
-
Yu: And that’s why we’re here! Hi there, Mr. Bespectacled Knows-it-All!
Klug: My name is KLUG! Gh… What are you here for!? Another pop quiz, perhaps? Or… You aren’t trying to make me into a ghost again are y-!?”
Yu: BZZZZZZZ! Sorry, wrong answer! Today we’re haunting you for consultation!
Rei: …We’re consulting you.
Klug: A… About what…?
Yu: We’re asking: How and why did the two of us become ghosts?!
Rei: How and why…?
Klug: Huh? Why you two became ghosts? Hm… Let’s see… To my knowledge… It is generally believed that a soul is likely to become a ghost if it has strong lingering regrets and attachments left in the living world…
Yu: Oh, I see! So maybe we just left some bread in the oven!
Klug: Regrets, not baguettes!
Yu: Or maybe we never finished sewing all the sequins on that dress…!
Klug: Regrets, not paillettes!
Yu: Or maybe we had a favorite newspaper we never finished reading…!
Klug: REGRETS, not GAZETTES!
Yu: Just a few more of those twilit evenings…!
Klug: REGRETS, NOT SUNSETS!
Yu: Those powerful emotions left by an unfinished business, that tie us to this world!!
Klug: ONCE AGAIN! REGRETS, NOT REGRE– uh. Huh?
Yu: Ahahahahaha! You nailed that punchline, thank you very much!
Rei: Many thanks.
Klug: Argh…! You are driving me insane! I shall excuse myself now, goodbye!
Yu: And thus Klug left, trying to look as smart as possible!
Rei: Because you did a number on him, Yu…
-
Yu: And thus we are now here, with that very certain girl, who probably knows a thing or two about all things occult, and another three or four about how to be just the slightest tad terrifying!!
Rei: Here we are…
Feli: The twin ghosts… What are you plotting? Did you come to let me exorcise you off this mortal coil once and for all?
Yu: Aaaaaaahhh! She’s just as scary as e-ever! But, but! That’s not what we’re here for!
Rei: Yeah. We’re not.
Yu: We come to you on this fine day because we’ve got a question to ask!
Rei: An important question.
Feli: Hm… That’s unusual of you. Very well. I shall let you speak.
Yu: You see! The two of us have no idea why we ended up becoming ghosts!
Feli: And why in the world would I know that?
Yu: Whoa!! Talk about being rebuffed! Um, UM…! Oh! Then, then! Why don’t you try to read our pasts? You’re so good at fortune telling, I’m sure you can make it work somehow!
Rei: …somehow.
Feli: I • Don’t • Want • To.  It is most likely for the better if you don’t know it, anyway.
Yu: HUUUUUH? Why, why?
Feli: Well, let’s suppose you did find out. What would you do with that knowledge?
Yu: Um, well… It’s just that Rei…
Rei: I want to know. It’s… always been bothering me.
Feli: Whatever. Go home. Don’t keep  thinking about these things.
Yu. HUUUUUH? Ah! I get it! You just can’t do it!
Feli: …Heh?
Yu: I’m right, right? You don’t know the truth, AND you don’t have any faith in your ability to divine it, either! That’s why you don’t wanna tell us!
Feli: What did you just say?! …Well, if you are going to insult me, very well! Just watch me! I shall peer into the fate that befell you • In • The • Past…
[magic noises]
Feli: KiiiiiiAAAAAAAHHHH!!!
[magic noises]
Yu: AAAAHH! She’s doing something!!
Rei: She is.
-
Rei: Hey, Yu! Yu! What’s wrong? Aw, why are you holed up back here all on your own again?
Yu: R-Rei… I was just reading a book…
Rei: Oh, c’mon Yu, the weather is so nice outside! Let’s go out and play together! What else do we have so many friends for?
Yu: Um… I… uh… I am more comfortable… back here… where it’s quiet.
Rei: Huh? Really?
Yu: And… uh… The others might just call me… ‘depressing’ again…
Rei: I’m sure they won’t! And if they do, I’ll protect you! I’ll always be by your side, Yu, so don’cha ever worry!
Yu: You’ll… always be with me…? Really?
Rei: Sure! We’re twins! As long as we’re together, there’s nothing we have to be scared of!
Yu: Y…Yeah. You’re right. As long as I’m with you, Rei…
[magic noises. There is a scene transition.]
-
Rei: Huh? Why does my body feel so light all of a sudden? Yu…? Yu, where are you?
Yu: I’m here…
Rei: Yu! You’re floating!
Yu: Ahahah… You’re floating too, Rei.
Rei: Yu… What’s going on…?
Yu: What’s happened to us…? …Well, I don’t mind. Looks like we can still stay together, and that’s all that matters. And… I feel so light now… all that weight has fallen off my heart, too!
Rei: We’re… together…?
Yu: I’m sure as long as we’re together, every day will be fun, no matter what becomes of us! Forever and ever! We’ll be HAPPY foreeeeever now!
-
[magic noises. There is a scene transition.]
Lemres: Feli… FELI!
Feli: Ah!
Lemres: Feli…
Feli (trembling voice): L…L-L-L-LEMRES!! W-Why are you… here…?
Lemres: I was just passing through, that’s all. I think you should stop this reading while you’re ahead. Okay?
Feli: Y…Y-Y-Yeah… E-E-E-Excuse me…
Yu: HUUUH?! So, so! How was it?! What did you see? Tell us, tell us!
Rei: Please tell us.
Feli: Uh…. [she stays quiet for a while] …The divination failed.
Yu: HUUUUH?
Rei: Huh?
Feli: Unrelated memories… disturbed the flow of what I was trying to read…
Yu: Oh noooo…! Hmpf! HMPF!
Lemres: I guess even our Feli can have an off day sometimes. Alright, let’s call it a day! I’ll give you all some niiice, sweet chocolate, so let’s all go home, okay?
Yu: Oh sweet! Now I can’t stay mad. That chocolate makes me melt, like it’s melting in my mouth! …Hey, Rei, are you okay with that?
Rei: Um.... Yeah, I guess…
Yu: Alrighty, with that all settled! See ya next scare! Bye-bye!
Rei: Bye-bye…
[They leave]
Feli: L…Lemres… I saw…
Lemres: Feli.
Feli: Lemres…
Lemres: I guess you saw something really strange, huh? Maybe you still need to train your power more, so you have better control over it.
Feli: … Yes… Maybe that is just it…No, I mean… I’m sure you’re right.
Lemres: Aw, c’mon, don’t make that face. Come with me. I’m taking you out for some dessert.
Feli: …! I’m coming!
Lemres: As they say… chocolate makes you melt… hm…

You reall~y are a dazzling person.
People that aspire to be idols really are different.
Ren Jinguji: Hm, what’s wrong, My Lady?
When he notices that I was staring, Jinguji-san smiles back at me.
Haruka Nanami: It’s nothing.... Um, well....
Oh wow, he’s too dazzling. The more I look at him, the more I feel as if he's someone from another world, so I turn away.
Ren Jinguji: Oh, stay right there. Don’t move....
Huh?
He puts his hand on my face and gently traces my cheek with his finger.
Ren Jinguji: Your exquisitely beautiful face is marred by this dirt.
Dirt?
Oh, perhaps some got on me when I was looking for the key….
Ren Jinguji: There, perfect. Hmmm. You are indeed beautiful.
While he's staring at me, he smiles.
Select the phrase!
Tumblr media
I am t-truly sorry! (+20 Love +0 Music)
Ren Jinguji: What are you apologizing for?
Haruka Nanami: Ah, well, I troubled you... and for that I sincerely apologize.
Ren Jinguji: Not at all. I would have done it without a second thought.
Haruka Nanami: Ah, um…. You said that too, that moment at the car, when you helped me… I don’t know what to say....
Also when you found and returned my handkerchief… Jinguji-san, you are really kind... I wonder if I can repay your kindness somehow.
Ren Jinguji: Don’t worry, it wasn’t a problem. I couldn’t stand around doing nothing after seeing you being so charming....
Come on, let’s go. We’re going to get scolded by the Boss if we’re late.
As he casually holds my shoulder, we continue to walk.
He gently guides me as a gentleman would escort a lady.
He is a complete natural at this, acting as if this is something normal, however….
Haruka Nanami: Oh, u-um....
H-his hand... i-is resting on my shoulder... my heart is beating so fast... will it ever stop?
Is this really okay…?
Ren Jinguji: What is it, My Lady? Is something wrong?
Wow.... His smile is dazzling.
Haruka Nanami: ... Oh, it’s nothing.
You don't have to walk with me. It’s okay. I want to say that to him, but no words come out.
My heart continues to pound in my chest until we arrive at the assembly hall.
I’ve never been this close to a man before, especially one so gentle... there are so many first times occurring today that it’s making me dizzy.
Jinguji-san.... Not only is he beautiful, but he is also very kind... and his voice....
A unique, seductive voice with a strong presence, but with a bit of melancholy buried within.
I want to hear him sing. I want to feel his music.
Even though you’re not doing anything... your very existence inspires me to create something. You’re an amazing person.
I'm pretty sure we'll never talk like this again.
He is a person whose existence is far beyond my reach.
Nonetheless, I think it’s a miracle that someone with such a brilliant aura would want to talk to someone like me.
Oh, thank goodness! This school has many wonderful things in store!
Tumblr media
After that, the entrance ceremony ends and I find myself walking alone in the hallway....
Tomochika Shibuya: Oh, oh no. Uwa...!
A girl carrying a bunch of flyers falls right in front of me.
Haruka Nanami: U-um... are... you alright?
I hold out my hand for the girl.
Tomochika Shibuya: Yeah. I guess I’m okay. Thanks.... Gosh, how am I the one forced to do these tasks as soon as I get to this school?
Haruka Nanami: Ah, let me help you.
Tomochika Shibuya: Really, are you sure? Thank you. You’re a nice person. What’s your name?
Haruka Nanami: Um... I’m Haruka Nanami.
Tomochika Shibuya: I’m Tomochika Shibuya. You can call me Tomochika. And I’ll call you Haruka.
Haruka Nanami: Okay... then, Tomo-chan.
Tomochika Shibuya: Tomo-chan... huh. That’s fine too. Well? What class are you in, Haruka? I’m in A Class by the way.
Haruka Nanami: Oh... I’m in S Class.
Tomochika Shibuya: Really!? Wow. Are you in that course as an idol?
Haruka Nanami: Actually... I’m in the composition course.
Tomochika Shibuya: You’re joking! Really? You’re even around the same age as me.... Wow, you’re impressive! ...
After that, we talk a lot and I discover Tomo-chan and I are in the same dorm. On that day, we become good friends.
For the first time in my whole entire life....
I actually made a human friend!!
Ah! I’m being blessed by so many happy things! ! I’m glad to be alive. Thank goodness!
From there, we deliver the flyers safely to the staff room. However, while we're walking down the hallway back to class....
Female Student A: Ah~. Jinguji-sama... I just watched that TV special ‘The World’s Amazing 100 Richest People’!
Of course, the interior of your home was beautiful, but I became a fan immediately after seeing you give the viewers a tour.
Female Student B: Ah, about this... I heard Jinguji-sama was enrolling in this school, so I baked you cookies....
Jinguji-san is surrounded by many girls.
Ren Jinguji: Thank you. I’m flattered.
Female Student A: Well, I-I brought a lunch box. If you want, maybe we could have lunch together....
Ren Jinguji: Did you... make the lunch box yourself?
Female Student A: Y-yes!
Ren Jinguji: That’s wonderful. I’m honored to receive your affections. Okay, let’s all go to the rooftop at noon.
Female Student A: O-okay. Thank you very much.
The girl stares at Jinguji-san, mesmerized.
Tomochika Shibuya: Whoa.... Look at that crowd! And in the center of it... Ren Jinguji...? I listened to their conversation and.... Wow.
Haruka Nanami: Tomo-chan, do you know him?
Tomochika Shibuya: Yeah, well, he’s famous. He’s part of the Jinguji Group, right?
Haruka Nanami: Yes.
I think the Jinguji Group is a huge Japanese company whose corporate power rivals the Hijirikawa Group.
Tomochika Shibuya: He’s the third son of that family and incredibly wealthy. Moreover, because he’s good-looking with that demeanor, girls naturally flock to him.
If one’s selling point is being a celebrity, as long as they got good looks, the mass media and the entertainment industry will latch onto them.
Lately, he’s been in specials about celebrities and appearing on TV and in magazines, so he’s pretty popular. That’s why he’s got fans right after he enrolled.
But with family connections, he should just go ahead and debut. Why did he even bother coming here?
Huh? What’s that about? For some reason, she seems pretty irritated.
Haruka Nanami: ... Tomo-chan, do you dislike Jinguji-san?
Tomochika Shibuya: I don’t hate him as a person, it’s just troublesome how girls around him start bickering with each other when there’s somebody like him around.
I've only heard rumors, but he really is impressive. It bothers me that he seems naturally that way.
However, even though everyone knows that there’s no hope if you end up liking that sort of person, people end up getting serious anyway.
In the end, you only wind up with a broken heart and being completely hurt, but of course it usually ends up being my job to comfort for some reason.
I would be fine if it was just that. I don’t mind mediating fights between girls or saying complaints directly to whomever, but....
People called me a meddlesome hag behind my back when I was in middle school and it was just sooooo annoying!
Haruka Nanami: That seems like it was d-difficult.
Tomochika Shibuya: Yeah, it was difficult! That’s why I don’t have a good impression of that type.
And, because they’re kind to everyone, you can't monopolize their time.
If you can enjoy it for what it is, it’s fine, but if you get serious with that sort of person, then you’ll just suffer.
You don’t seem like you would get involved with that type and that’s okay, but I still think you should be careful.
Haruka Nanami: Th-there’s no reason for me to be careful, I am not worthy for Jinguji-san, I feel like I shrink whenever I try to talk to him....
I think Jinguji-san is kind, charming, and wonderful, but....
We come from different worlds. I admire his brilliance and aura, but he is unreachable like the sun.
Tomochika Shibuya: So... you admire him? Everybody suffers because it doesn’t end with just admiration....
Haruka Nanami: ???
Someone appears.
Ren Jinguji: Hi, ladies. You two look like you’re having fun, what are you talking about??
Haruka Nanami: Oh. Jinguji-san. We were talking about you just now....
Tomochika Shibuya: Ah, you dummy!!
Suddenly, Tomo-chan covers my mouth. Why?
Tomochika Shibuya: Er... yes, actually, I was just talking about how Jinguji-san is really popular. Must be hard to be surrounded by girls every day, right?
But with excellent looks and substantial wealth, it’s probably not easy for you, right?
Tomo-chan talks smoothly while putting on a face.
It’s true though. If you are surrounded by so many people then you will surely have no time to relax.
Ren Jinguji: That's not true! It pains me to think that I am unable to pay attention to all girls equally.
Tomochika Shibuya: Hmm. So what you mean is that you love everyone equally?
Suddenly, Tomo-chan's eyes narrow.
Ren Jinguji: Of course. You two as well~.
He winks while saying that. Every single one of his gestures are so beautiful that I find myself gazing at them.
Tomochika Shibuya: When you take your equal love for everybody too far, don’t you get tired of all the trouble that follows you?
Ren Jinguji: I spare no effort to make sure that doesn’t happen. I don’t want to cause unhappiness for any of you lovely ladies.
Tomochika Shibuya: I see…. It seems you’ve been thinking about this, more or less. I guess you’ve got it all worked out for yourself.
Ren Jinguji: Thank you. I’m pleased that you approve. I certainly want to get along well with you both.
Jinguji-san looks at us and smiles.
Haruka Nanami: Eh, ah, well, that’s more than enough. Because Jinguji-san’s existence is... already like a miracle. So, um....
Get along well?! I’m fine just gazing from afar from a corner of a room!!
Haruka Nanami: You have a brilliant aura, especially your voice! Your voice is so lovely… and your singing voice... I think it’s very dazzling….
Your tone is brimming with confidence, sophistication, and is on point, but it’s not just that. There’s a depth there as well, tinged with a little sorrow.
T-this is strange. Usually I don’t talk so much. Now I can’t seem to stop.
Haruka Nanami: From when we first met, there is this melody still playing in my head, so… what I mean is… that you’re just that amazing of a person....
I want him to sing this way. This melody would suit him. These thoughts keep looping in my head.
But I'm sure I won’t be able to make the most of his talent, with my current ability.
However, I am very drawn to him. My wish to create a song for him is unreachable and yet grips my heart.
Haruka Nanami: I’m not the kind of person that should come close to you....
Ren Jinguji: That is completely untrue…. And this is the first time I’ve been praised for my voice. Thank you.
Haruka Nanami: Huh!! Really? Even though it’s such a lovely voice....
I wonder why?
When I tilt my head while thinking that, Tomo-chan looks at me with a strange look on her face.
Tomochika Shibuya: Wow, an ordinary girl would pay attention to looks or the status of being the son of a distinguished family. Rather, people not interested in those things are rare I think.
Haruka Nanami: Well, because, I think voice is important! A voice this wonderful is rare!!
Ren Jinguji: I’m pleased to hear you being so passionate about me. But, is my charm... only in my voice?
Jinguji-san, amused, smiles at me with a slight chuckle.
Haruka Nanami: Of course, that’s not all. There are lots of elements that provide excitement musically, such as your presence, atmosphere, and aura.
I feel like all of these things are part of your voice, and thinking about how many different expressions your voice is capable of is so exciting.
Ren Jinguji: Musically...? I guess the voice is the most important part.
Haruka Nanami: Yes! I don’t understand anything other than music.
Ren Jinguji: Is it possible you don't understand love either?
Haruka Nanami: Love?
Ren Jinguji: If that’s the case, shall I teach you?
He smiles sweetly at me and entwines my hair around his finger.
Select the phrase!
Tumblr media
Yes, please do! (+20 Love +0 Music)
I nodded cheerfully.
Ren Jinguji: You’re rather enthusiastic.
Haruka Nanami: Yes, I’m happy that you’re teaching me things I don’t know. I should listen carefully because you’re going out of your way to teach me. Oh, let me take some notes....
When I take a notepad and ballpoint pen from my bag, Jinguji-san laughs at me for some reason.
Ren Jinguji: I’d rather you write in the notepad of your heart.
He says that and takes the notepad out of my hands.
Tomochika Shibuya: Ah! Erm, u-uh.... We have to go do a thing.
Haruka Nanami: Huh?
Tomo-chan pulls me away to the other side of the hallway.
Tomochika Shibuya: Phew, that was a close one. I told you to be careful earlier and yet that happened. You’re too careless.
Haruka Nanami: Wait? What?
Tomochika Shibuya: To someone that's honest and inexperienced in love, the more dangerous someone like him is....
I think he was simply teasing you a bit, but.... That was dangerous. This is less about him and more about you....
Haruka Nanami: Um... what do you mean?
Tomochika Shibuya: I’m telling you not to fall in love with him.
Haruka Nanami: I’m not in love with him, I just think he’s wonderful. Is it bad that I think that? People with a voice like that are so rare!
Tomochika Shibuya: It depends on the type of love but... it’s probably pointless to say this to you now, but you shouldn’t get too close to him.
Judging by our conversation earlier with him, he’s far more talented than I thought, and well, I guess he’s doing a fine job. I wonder what would happen… when he’s up against an airhead....
Actually, you’re an unknown variable. Even if he plans on going about doing his usual thing, there is a chance that you would fall in love with him unexpectedly.
Well, I hope you won’t get heartbroken....
Haruka Nanami: Thank you, but don’t worry about me. Jinguji-san is such an admirable and dazzling person that I’m afraid to get close to him.
Tomochika Shibuya: Really? We’ll see, but... if something happens, tell me.
Taking care of you is a piece of cake for me!
Tomo-chan pounds her chest while saying that.
Haruka Nanami: Thank you!!!
Tomochika Shibuya: Well then, my class is here. I’ll see you later.
Tomo-chan says that while waving goodbye and enters her classroom.
Haruka Nanami: She was such a nice person…. We’re going to be roommates for this year…. I’m so glad.
As long as I’m here at this academy, I feel like I can finally fulfill my wish to have a normal school life.
Tumblr media
Ryuya Hyuga: Hey you guys, get seated.
The teacher comes in as soon as I get to the classroom.
Ryuya Hyuga: I think some of you already know, but I’m the homeroom teacher, Ryuya Hyuga. I’m currently an active idol.
Well, right now I’m taking more acting roles. I’m not really the type to be an idol to begin with.
He says that with a shrug.
Hyuga-sensei is an amazing person who is also a director of the Shining Office while actively working as an idol.
He is a person with a very strong sense of justice who won’t overlook wrongdoings and slams them down with the hammer of retribution.
And, it is said that a person will not be able to work in the entertainment industry if he dislikes them.
Ryuya Hyuga: There’s a reason I’m not doing singing work now, but I do have a track record as a singer.
Also, I’m familiar with the sound equipment around here, so you can always come and ask questions if you don't know something.
Don’t be shy, and don’t think about procrastinating either. Just confront it head-on.
Your future will be determined by how hard you work this year. Don't cut corners, and put all your power into learning. Got it?
Hyuga-sensei starts explaining about Saotome Academy and how to use the facilities on campus.
Although our school is an idol training school, it specializes in developing idol singers.
That’s how, by providing a composition course alongside, it becomes a way for idols and composers to debut immediately after graduation.
From this time starting in April, composers and idols form a pair, aiming to debut together.
And in most cases after debuting, the idol will sing the songs made by the composer who teamed up with them.
Of course, the composer creates songs, but the singer must produce them.
A person's life will be in my hands. That thought scares me a little.
Everyone who came to this class is highly talented, it wouldn’t even be weird if a lot of them debuted right away.
... Am I really good enough though...?
Ryuya Hyuga: Well, that's enough explanation.
Starting today you should decide on a partner to compete alongside you for this year… no, for even after you debut.
Of course, you won't understand everything about each other after just one self-introduction.
With that, only "luck" can tell if you get along with your partner or not.
However, you can increase the probability of your "luck."
That doesn't mean you can slack off in your introductions. You all have a choice, but don’t forget that you also have to get chosen!
Everyone in the class responds Yes! with a loud voice.
And so, the introductions begin.
Tokiya Ichinose: I’m Tokiya Ichinose.16 years old. My special skill is... well. If I had to pick one I guess it would be singing.
Ichinose-san doesn't say anything that seems to self-promote but only mentions his age and name.
However, immediately after, he sings a song a capella. That song is just too wonderful.
Everyone understands that he doesn’t need to say anything more after his song.
His skill as a singer to firmly captivate the listeners would put even professionals to shame. I think it's strange how he hasn't yet debuted.
And then there's Syo-kun.
Syo Kurusu: Alright. Yours truly is next.
He declares that he will become a big idol in the future and for some reason begins to perform karate.
I don't really understand the relationship between idols and karate, but Syo-kun's movements are still amazing.
At first, Syo-kun shows off his stances by himself, then all of a sudden Hyuga-sensei gets interested and joins in with Syo-kun's movements, so the tension increases.
It isn’t a match, so their moves aren't used on each other.
But….
I think for a moment their fists will collide with each other’s faces if they stop just a second too late.
Everyone in the class gulps as they watch their dueling performance unfold.
The two don't exchange words, but when everything is finished, they smile with satisfaction at almost the same time.
There is a special air between the two of them, as if they were old friends.
And then, it's Jinguji-san’s turn.
Ren Jinguji: My name is Ren Jinguji. I’m an Aquarius, blood type B, 17 years old. My hobby is....
While saying that, Jinguji-san takes the hand of the girl who is sitting next to him and kisses it.
Ren Jinguji: Pleasing women~.
Uwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
High-pitched squeals resonate throughout the classroom.
Ren Jinguji: And my special skill is... the saxophone.
Ryuya Hyuga: Ooh, the sax, huh? Can you play it right now?
Ren Jinguji: Of course. I thought something like this might happen so I brought it along~.
Tumblr media
It is a very sexy performance. Maybe one could say that there is mellowness in the sound?
In Jinguji-san's case, he has an amazing presence and he is naturally sexy to begin with. That is also reflected in every note he plays.
Besides, his face while playing the saxophone is very serious, it's very... very attractive.
His voice is so enthralling too but... the way he makes that sound.
His presence, aura, voice… and this expressiveness and musicality.
It’s as if he was really born to become an idol.
Stealing everyone’s hearts. Like a true idol that everyone can’t help but worship.
Then, as I watch Jinguji-san intently, he seems to notice my gaze and winks at me.

Haruka Nanami: T-thank you very much!!
Ren Jinguji: You’re very welcome.
Jinguji-san smiles brightly with a slight bow of his head, looking almost like a divine being.
Wow, a supreme smile.
And then.... Finally, it's my turn.

Suddenly, Jinguji-san smiles and stands up.
Ren Jinguji: This Lady is Haruka Nanami. She's a lovely girl who desires to become a composer.
Haruka Nanami: Ah, o-oh no, I’m sorry I made Jinguji-san go through that trouble....

You hit your head and lost consciousness so I got worried. Are you feeling better now?
Haruka Nanami: Y-yes, somehow.... B-by any chance, did Jinguji-san carry me here?
Ren Jinguji: Yes, that’s why I’m in front of you right now.
Haruka Nanami: O-oh, I am very sorry. Thank you very much for that!!
Um. I'm all right now, so we should head back quickly. I mean, there is also the thing about choosing a partner after all....
I don’t want to cause you any more trouble....
Ren Jinguji: You don’t have to worry about that. Because you’re my partner.
Haruka Nanami: Wha.....? What did you just say?
Am I getting deaf? I feel like he just said something really amazing.
Me, Jinguji-san’s partner? No way! No way! No way!
There is no way something straight out of a dream like that would ever happen!
I'm sure I misheard him. That is what I’ve decided.
Ren Jinguji: Idols and composers are of one body and mind. Two as one precious whole. That is me and you.
Haruka Nanami: ... Oh? R-really.... B-but why?
So I didn’t mishear?? Is this really real?
This is impossible.... Jinguji-san and I are like the day and night.
Our entire existence is too different. Standing next to each other cannot be good.
Ren Jinguji: If I had to say a reason then maybe "fate"?
Haruka Nanami: F... fate?
Ren Jinguji: You and I ended up like this because of "fate." You don’t have a reason to object to what the gods have decided. Am I right?
Haruka Nanami: ....
Is there really such a convenient "fate"? I wonder if this is a dream and I will return to yesterday once I wake up.
Ren Jinguji: I have decided on the Little Lamb....
Jinguji-san says this while gently narrowing his eyes.
Haruka Nanami: ....
Why did Jinguji-san choose me? There is not even one thing I have to offer to make this fair....
While I'm deep in thought, Jinguji-san sighs deeply.
Ren Jinguji: What more can I say to convince you to believe me...? While I was carrying you, Ryuya-san asked me what I’ll do about my partner.
Ren Jinguji: So I told him, “I've decided that my partner will be this girl, you know.”
Oh, I see... so that’s how it happened.
B-but, putting that aside, I don't think it's a good idea to decide on an important partner like that.
Not to mention, it was my fault....
Haruka Nanami: T-that would cause a lot of trouble for you... but, you know you can still change....
Ren Jinguji: A man doesn’t go back on his word. You are my partner, Little Lamb.
Besides, I couldn’t just leave you after you had collapsed.
While saying that, Jinguji-san kisses the back of my hand.
Ren Jinguji: And to tell you the truth, you saved me a bit. If we had begun to select partners there would have probably been a fight to a greater or lesser extent.
Seeing a hurt woman is a painful thing. However, if I make the decision before they ask me, then I’m sure they shouldn’t object.
I imagine walking out of a classroom with an unconscious girl in your arms would leave quite an impression. In any case, that should’ve convinced everyone.
Haruka Nanami: But is it really okay if it’s me? Jinguji-san’s idol aura is amazing, so will my song live up to that....
O-of course, I will do my best! But... I don’t have much talent... so I’m sorry….
You could choose a more talented person, if you wanted to....
Ren Jinguji: I don’t care about that actually. I'm not interested in music or idols.
I came to this school because of family circumstances. It was never my intention to come here. It’s fine, even if I don’t become an idol, I don’t care about music either.
So, the Lady shouldn’t worry about me and just write a song she likes.
Haruka Nanami: ....
He doesn’t care? About music?
Haruka Nanami: Um, I can’t do anything other than write songs but.... If you reject music, I think I can't be of any help so….
Ren Jinguji: Don’t say that about yourself. There is infinite potential hidden in you, Lady. You will surely blossom someday.
There is no guarantee that the talent heaven granted you is only one. You should know more about your own charm, don’t you think? Anyway, I look forward to this next year with you.
Haruka Nanami: Oh… I'm an incompetent person, but I look forward to working with you as well.
I reply, kneel and bow while lightly touching the floor with the tips of my hands.
Ren Jinguji: Me too. I have high hopes for you. For all sorts of things… okay?
As he says that, Jinguji-san smiles sweetly at me.
Even so, is it really okay for someone who has such a great presence to team up with me who is so extremely plain?
Jinguji-san told me it would be okay, but I must do my best to not drag him down.
Mini Game
Ryuya Hyuga: Alright, let’s start this private lesson~. That’s right. We’ll test your sense of rhythm before starting the composition class.
For composers, rhythm is the most basic of basics. From here on out, study hard and learn all you can!
First I will show you the pattern. After that, you’re gonna continue.
So, let’s begin.
S Rank
Ren Jinguji: Amazing. I don't think it's mere coincidence that I ended up choosing you. With your compositions and my singing put together, don't you agree that we're unstoppable?
When I tell Jinguji-san about my test results, he's very happy for me. I want to get good results next time too.

Leo:Anzu~! Where are ya?!
Oh, there you are! Uchuu~☆
Mao: H-Hey, why don't you announce your entrance like a normal person?! Look, Anzu jumped out of her skin at you!
Leo: Ah, really? Sorry about that!
Midori: Sorry to bother you out of nowhere, Anzu-san. We couldn’t stop Tsukinaga-senpai with just the two of us…
Eh!? Well… The reason why we’re here, you ask…
…W-why were we here again, Isara-senpai?
Mao: Why're you asking me?!
Uh, well... We wanted to ask you something, Anzu, um... Ahaha, what was it again...?
Leo: Jeeeez, you guys are really beatin' around the bush. Fine, fine! Leave it to me, I'll ask her!
Hey, Anzu! You can't get married this young! Papa's forbiddin' it!
Tumblr media
Mao: You didn't ask at all, Senpai. Rather, you just went right ahead and did the opposite!
You're surprisingly shaken too, huh...
But that's not the point! He's right, Anzu!
I mean, of course I wanna congratulate you... But honestly, don't you think we're a little too young to think of marriage? We're in high school!
Midori: Umm… Anzu-san. Are you perhaps being manipulated by your significant other? And, uhh, who even is your significant other in the first place…?
Eichi: Now, now, one at a time. Don't you think you're causing a bit of a fuss by bombarding Anzu-chan with so many questions at once?
Keito: Haah…
Leo: Huh? You guys came over, too? We're in the middle of askin' her about it directly!
Eichi: Hello, Anzu-chan. I'm sorry about the sudden rush of people.
Hm? You were just about to head my way?
Whatever for?
...Ah, the proposal. So you did end up revising it somewhat, did you? Very well, allow me to look it over once more.
...Mm. I see, I see. So you'd like to incorporate a Shuffle Unit this time?
Well, that would fulfill your desires while keeping your workload the same...
Not only that, but you've managed to keep both the project and budget in mind this time as well.
Yes, this'll do. You've kept your end of the deal, so I will as well — you have my support. I'm certain that the superiors will approve it as well.
Your hard work will be repaid in full. Congratulations ♪
Leo: Ugh... Hey, Tenshi! You can't just go and give her your blessin' all on your own! I haven't given the OK on this marriage yet!
Keito: Eichi, hurry up and explain what’s going on to them. It’s becoming unbearably noisy.
Eichi: Ah, that's right. I nearly forgot. Give me one moment.
Drumroll, please... Ta-da~♪
Leo: Nn? What'd ya take your phone out for?
Mao: Huh? There's something on the screen... Uh... "Gotcha!"...?
Mao & Leo: — WHAT?!
Keito: In short ― you fools have fooled yourselves from the start.
Eichi: That's right. This whole marriage affair you've been vexed about has simply been a proposal that Anzu-chan wanted to undertake.
Recently, we received a proposal to appear at a wedding hall... However, as it would've been unfavorable for us to accept it as-is, it was rejected.
After that, though, it seems that Anzu-chan and the one who'd originally brought the proposal to us hit it off quite well.
As such, Anzu-chan's done all she can to try and make this plan work out.
And now... her efforts have borne fruit: I've given my approval, so all will proceed as planned.
Midori: Umm… Then, Anzu-san’s delighted expression after buying wedding magazines was because...?
Mao: Ah... So that wedding hall was featured in this month's magazine, and you saw ways to improve the proposal through it? That’s why you looked so happy?
Eichi: Ahh, so that’s what started this misunderstanding. It seems as if the two of you must've gotten the wrong idea with no prior context.
Leo: So that's it~ ♪ We just got the wrong idea, huh? Wahaha! What a relief! That's a load offa my shoulders!
Huh? What's wrong with you two? Are you guys feeling hot or somethin'? Your faces are super red.
Midori: …
I want to end it all…
Mao: Dammit...!
Tumblr media
Eichi: Fufu. I've never seen anyone manage that shade before. What a wonderfully fulfilling day ♪
By the way, Anzu-chan... Why have you chosen now of all times to do this proposal? Normally one would think of June for June Brides, so I thought you'd do it closer to then.
Oh? Really? Autumn is the most popular season for weddings?
Ah, I see. So those involved value practicality and comfort over the imagery itself, then?
That makes sense. Now I understand why you chose this season…
...I see. So this proposal takes into account those who'd rather be married right now, and will be aimed towards them.
That'll certainly appeal to those upstairs.
Coincidentally, Anzu-chan, in regards to the revisions you made on this proposal... You’re intending to incorporate a Shuffle Unit into this, correct?
Do you know who all will be involved? I'd like to know how best to support you if so.
...Mm? What's with that smile? It seems familiar somehow...
Keito: I’ve been observing her since a while ago. That smile is the same sinister smirk you have when you plan something wicked, Eichi.
Eichi: Sinister? Wicked? I don't quite like your wording, Keito.
Oh? The five members for the Shuffle Unit are those who've gathered here now?
Leo: Oooh! Really?! It's my time to shine? Perfect! It sounds interesting, so put me in!
Keito: W-wait a second! Don’t drag me into this…!
Eichi: Hm... Well, no one here has participated as a member of a Shuffle Unit, that much is true...
But can you refrain from saying "I'm looking forward to working with you" with such a kind smile on your face?
Mm? What is it?
Hm, true enough. You certainly were lacking a man's perspective when it came to your proposal.
I see. So you only understood this once you'd seen the earnest looks on Mao and the others' faces.
Keito: That’s why you’re asking us, who hold such sincerity…?
Sincerity… I can’t really say I was being that sincere, moreso Eichi certainly was not holding anything like that.
Eichi: But when you saw the five of us together, the image you sought after immediately came to mind?
Ah... I suppose this is my just desserts. I had only wanted to cause a bit of mischief, and now Anzu-chan's taken her revenge.
Is this the taste of one's own medicine, then?

“are you sure you haven’t seen her around?”
“no,” yaoyao said sadly, “i’m sorry, mei jiĕjie… i asked the other adepti and they also said they haven’t spotted spring bringer in a few days now…”
“i see… and you say you overheard the funeral director saying that the consultant on the parlor is taking a few day offs?”
“mhm! but… why do you ask? are they related?”
“…. you could say that.”
meirin’s frown deepened.
were they perhaps just taking a vacation together? but in that case, why…. why didn’t she respond to my prayers? no, something is definitely wrong here. if anything happened to her, there was no way that person would stay silent, after all.
the young child looked up worriedly as the woman’s expression turned darker, the lines between her eyebrows creasing further. her dainty fingers tugged on the adult’s hand, “…. jiĕjie, have you had lunch?”
“hm? oh, not yet… hey, why don’t we get lunch together over at wanmin? my treat, of course.”
“i was about to suggest that! it's always better to think with your stomach full! ah, but i can pay for myself…”
“no no, consider it thanks for helping me with the information gathering. besides, i’m craving some liyue-style meat-based dishes…,” meirin paused, remembering a certain tale - or, well, it would be more proper to describe it as an incident - which crys had told her before.
“…. yaoyao? after the meal, can you show me the way to the nearest post office? i’d like to send a letter to fontaine before planning my next move.”
if the geo dragon is missing, then i’ll try my luck with the hydro dragon….
...... i hope al haitham has some new information when we regroup later.
“Survival skills like those become very much a necessity when you’re wandering all over the world. The wind can tell us many things including the coming of rain or the presence of danger.”
“I still think it’s impressive! You have very keen senses…”
The pair chats calmly as they eat, this time enjoying a meal at one of the village’s restaurants, sitting side by side at the counter, taking small bites with their chopsticks and enjoying fragrant tea. A ship set to Liyue will sail early the next morning and agreed to take them for a comfortable price (With Crys promising she’d pay Kazuha back ASAP and once again thanking him profusely)
“So, you’ve been to Liyue and Mondstadt before, any other place?”
“I’ve wanted to visit Sumeru for a while… hmm, what about you? Mentioned Fontaine for a… business meeting? And the Ministry of civil Affairs… I’ve heard before of an adeptus working there.”
“Oh! Well… I do… I travel a lot too I suppose. Though I cannot recall much, and specially not being here in Inazuma before.”
“Hmm.” Kazuha remains pensive, statements like those does make it sound like she’s probably important, most likely people will quickly recognize who she is as soon as they steep on the harbor, or at least he hopes so. Or that at least going back to a familiar place her memories would come back easier.
“Oh! I want some of th-”
“Do you think-”
Crys stretches a bit in front of him to pick a piece of sashimi, at that moment Kazuha turns back to her and both end up faces mere inches apart, noses almost brushing.
Kazuha’s cheeks get warm with a healthy blush spread while Crys immediately turns scarlet.
“I-I’m sorry-!!”
“No! i-it was me I-!”
“Um…!”
Both sit back a little apart, Crys practically shrinks into her seat looking at her lap while Kazuha pointedly stares at a wall. There a short silence.
Awkward…
Crys feels bad, her ears droop. “I’m sorry Kazuha, it was my bad.”
“No worries…”
Oh.
Great.
“Well, if it isn’t my favorite diplomat.” A female voice purrs with amusement. “I thought you’d be long gone back to Liyue, dear.”
The pair turns across the counter, there sits a woman with long flowing pink hair, fuzzy ears hanging low adorned with jewelry, and a stylized shrine priestess’ outfit. She rests elbows on the table, chin propped at her crossed hands with a mischievous glint.
Crys stares and blinks.
“Ah… Guuji Yae.” Kazuha murmurs.
“Hm, I thought after your business at Narukami a couple of weeks ago you’d be right back home, how interesting to find you here in such unique company.”
“I’m sorry I… we know each other?” Crys asks embarrassed.
Yae Miko stays silent for a few moments, her eyes sharp and unreadable as she seems to calculate a million things at once. Finally, she speaks again, her tone completely serious. “What happened to you?”
“She’s… lost. She lost her memories it seems, can’t remember a lot of things, flashes come and go in the past few days” Kazuha explains. “I found her passed out outside Chinju forest almost a week ago, Lady Guuji.”
Yae Miko hums, eyes narrowing. “Any aggressiveness? Has she passed out again since then?”
“N-no…” Crys mumbles.
“So probably not erosion. Anything particular?”
“Um… I can’t… remember people close or important to me, their names, faces, my own names… it's like just out of reach, I have them at the tip of my tongue but”
“But,” Kazuha pipes in. “Whenever she does remember a name, other memories seem to come back along with it.”
Miko’s eyes widen a fraction. “I see… allow me, just a moment.” She stands up and gets closer, much to Crys’ nervousness. Her gohei materializes with a glow and she waves it around a couple of times in slow precise movements before almost tapping the illuminated beast on the head.
Her expression turns severe.
“Hm. As suspected.” She sighs and dismisses the item again. “You my dear, have been ‘pranked’ by a powerful youkai.”
“W-what?”
“It’s an ancient and difficult technique, usually meant to… ensnare others and force them into subservience. You’ve had your name stolen.”
“My… name?” How can one steal a name?
“That’s right” She drawls, sitting back again across from them. “Your memories, your experiences, your identity, they are all tied to your name, it’s who you are, and so long as you don’t reclaim it, you’ll continue being lost…” She explains calmly.
Crys pales, she feels anxious, sick.
“Can’t you undo it, Lady Guuji? After all you are… very powerful.” Kazuha clears his throat. Miko gives him a look.
“Unfortunately, only the bearer of the curse can break it you see.”
“B-But-!” Crys stands up, she’s shaking slightly. “Y-You know who I am, you know me, you know my name, my real name… don’t you, Lady Guuji?”
Yae Miko sucks in a breath almost imperceptibly. “It’s been… centuries since you called me that.” She murmurs. Then shakes her head, and Crys’ feels her hope drop. “I have always known you officially as Spring Bringer and for several centuries you have gone simply by ‘Crys’ I’m afraid I am not privy to your true name.”
“That… can’t be…” Crys drops back into the chair, crying. Panic rises in her chest, how did this happen? How can this be? How does no one know? What if no one knows? How does she herself not remember her own damn NAME!!
This time Kazuha stands up, placing his hands on the crying woman’s shoulders trying to comfort her as she sobs. “But then how did some random youkai know her name?”
“Simple, to steal a name you need it to be written down. Literally ripping out or destroying it seals the deal. You must have had some document or letter on you with it perhaps.” She shakes her head. “Regardless, Spring Bringer, listen to me, do not fret. Go to Liyue. The other adepti will know, they will help you.” She reassures.
Yet, the distressed adeptus continues crying.
Kazuha steels himself. At least they now have answers… and a solution.
Lost in the forest, so deep In solitude’s embrace, shroud of mystery A deer wanders, and softly weeps

(But in the end, Japanese-made bread suits Japanese people's tastes the most. Even if you disregard that, the bread from this bakery is a top tier delicacy.)

Hm, but now the stage isn't good enough for your dancing... Then I'll cooperate with Kagehira and change up the decorations...
Hm, yeah. I'll have to use the plan that I thought was too difficult to execute....
Mika: ...
Shu: Huh? Oh, yeah. My apologies. I was lost in my own world for a second.
"Acanthe" is the catalyst of Kagehira's thoughts, as well. So I should ask your opinions on things.
To match your acting, I'd like to include this change in the stage decorations. How do you feel?
Mika: ...Sure.
Shu: Then, you can rest assured I'll be taking good care of the stage decorations. I'll match it to your current acting level, and we'll have the most perfect of performances.
Mika: ...
Shu: ? Kagehira?
You aren't nearly as energized as you usually are... are you perhaps tired?
Hm, to achieve this level of perfection, you must have worked hard outside of practice.
Let's end practice early then. That suits me too, I can properly study how we can change up the current decorations.
Go to your room and rest well, Kagehira.
Mika: ...
Shu: ? Left without saying a word... That's certainly strange. I've never seen Kagehira so quiet.
Aack. I'll go check on him after I wrap up this bit. I'll go back to my room to finish up the performance design and the stage decorations. Ah, right. I forgot the outfits...
Maybe I'll head to the ES clothing gallery for that, I always think clearer there.
Mika moves with an almost robotic animation in his live2D for the duration of this dialouge, he only snaps out of it when Shu shakes him

Owen Woodcutter 2022 SR Card - [Here's A Thank-you Gift For You] - Card Story (ft. Riquet), Episode, Home Screen Voice
Tumblr media
A.k.a. a story of how Owen became a celebrity who got stalked by his newfound fans (sorry)
====== Card Story: Chapter 1 - Where's the thing you're looking for? ======
Tumblr media
(Rustling sounds)
Owen: ……Hm?
(Squeaking sound)
Owen: What, it’s just a squirrel. Did you need something from me?
(Rustling sounds)
Riquet: Ah, here you are! I thought I had lost sight of it…… Ah, Owen.
Owen: Hello, Riquet. Could it be that this squirrel was your prey? Were you planning to roast it whole as your snack or something?
Riquet: T-That’s not it. I helped this little one out when it was caught between the branches just now.
Riquet: Then, it suddenly panicked and ran off in a hurry, so I got a little curious……
Riquet: Is this tree over here its home?
Owen: Nope. It says it looked similar so it was mistaken.
Riquet: ……Speaking of which, you can understand what animals are saying, right?
Riquet: Um, Owen. Please ask the squirrel if it is having any troubles. Because if there is, I would like to offer my help.
Owen: Don’t wanna. What a bother.
Riquet: Why? With your powers, we might be able to help this little one out though.
Owen: What’s the point in helping such a tiny speck of life?
Owen: Ohh, perhaps were you hoping to pretend to be a goodie two shoes? It sure isn’t easy being O' Great Saviour.
Riquet: It’s not like I was pretending to be a good person. Even if they’re small animals, we ought to offer them a helping hand if they're feeling troubled.
Owen: My, is that so. In that case, good luck.
Riquet: ……That’s enough, I get it already. I will help that squirrel by myself!
====== Card Story: Chapter 2 - Where's the thing you're looking for? ======
Riquet: Come here, little one. It’s alright now. Because I will be guiding you—
(Squeaking sound)
Riquet: Ah…… Is there something inside that treehole?
Riquet: ……It seems to have gotten the wrong one. Perhaps it’s this one next to it instead?
Owen: You're so noisy…… It’s irritating to have people running left and right all around you, you know.
Riquet: But, this squirrel seems to be busy entering and coming out of all those treeholes…...
Riquet: It’s looking for something after all, right?
(Squeaking sound)
Owen: Seriously…… What a dolt. If you’re gonna keep searching randomly like that, you’ll never find it even by sunset.
Owen: ……Here, this way.
(Squeaking sound)
Riquet: Whoa, it jumped onto Owen’s hand obediently……
Owen: I hate troublesome things. Let’s quickly get this over with.
(Walking sounds)
—After some time—
Owen: The tree you’re looking for is this one, isn’t it?
(Squeaking sound)
Riquet: The squirrel went inside the treehole…… Wow, there’s so many nuts here……!
Owen: To even forget where it hid its own nuts at, what a dumb one.
Riquet: I see, so that’s why it was searching for a treehole!
Riquet: Even though I can’t understand its language, I too can tell that it is delighted. It’s because you helped it solve its troubles, Owen.
Owen: Haha. There really is no bounds to your naivety, huh.
Riquet: Huh?
Owen: I took the trouble of bringing the squirrel all the way here, so I’ll be taking all these nuts with me.
Riquet: What……?!
Owen: I should get Nero to make me some cakes with these nuts. The ones with a whole lot of sweet honey on it would be great.
Owen: For these things to suffice as the price for making use of me, you should be thankful.
====== Card Episode - The popular person of the forest ======
—In front of the Manor fountain—
Owen: …….
(Sound of footsteps)
Akira: Owen? What are you doing, looking towards the ground like that…?
Cat: Meow…..!
Akira: Whoa, a kitty…..?
Owen: ……Oh my, it ran away. I wonder if it’s because of those violent stomps of yours?
Akira: Ehh!? S-Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare the cat……
Akira: Could it be that you were talking with it just now?
Owen: That guy was the one who came up and spoke to me on its own, that’s all.
Akira: Ah, you can speak to animals, right? The other day, I heard about something from Riquet too.
Akira: He said that at that forest, you helped out a squirrel who was in trouble. Did you talk with the other animals there as well?
Owen: ……
Akira: (Huh, what’s wrong? His expression turned grim in just a split second……)
Owen: It was really annoying. It’s just that I can understand what animals are saying, but it’s not like I’m fond of them.
Owen: That squirrel went around and blabbered on about me to the other animals, you know. Because of that, I got followed around by all kinds of animals.
Akira: (W-Who'd have thought there'd be an animal network……!)
Akira: You sure had it tough……
Owen: I wanted to burn that forest to the ground but I thought, oh well. The nuts that I snatched from the squirrel didn’t taste too bad anyway.
Owen: Entertaining these creatures from time to time might not be too bad of an idea. Though I will be making them pay an equivalent price for it, of course.
====== Home Screen Voice ======
Owen: The other day, I saw a child who was crying because his ice cream melted and dropped onto the floor. It was so pitiful. If that child was a wizard, then even if they were inside a scorching magma chamber, they would have been able to savour it down to the very last bite. Being a human is so inconvenient, right?

liveblog time - here’s the first part of the third trial! OH BOY
-monokuma spends a long time insisting that he does NOT lie about motives and that the dead can be revived, but *only in the ultimate academy*. this...still doesn’t tell us how exactly they’re being revived (character backstory put into a new body VS the og person being put back into the simulation), but it’s at least interesting!
-”i dunno about tenko, but i’m pretty fuckin’ sure kiyo murdered angie!” miu calling the murderer themselves but then proceeding to be completely wrong about *how* the murder happened happens in nearly every trial and it’s always hilarious. love u queen.
-”you mean one of those *two* people! cuz a robot ain’t people, jack!” MIU! after all that maintenence together!?
-again with the ‘no-one could have opened that door but kokichi’! i get why it was written like this, but it’s still such a stupid assumption for the characters to make. they don’t even ASK if the others can lockpick, let alone consider that’s something easily lied about.
-”yeah, i did it. i killed angie.” [...hm.] HPDSHDDGHSGD SHUICHI YOU COULD AT LEAST *PRETEND* TO CONSIDER IT YOU’RE GONNA HURT HIS FEELINGS!! he even pulls out his blank, serious face for this one!!
-can irouma be normal. for FIVE MINUTES-
-”silence, outsider! only the Suspect Rangers are allowed to speak!” HPRGGDGDGDGFHFH. go go suspect rangers cartoon when...
-”it’s not meaningless!” [himiko?] “tenko’s death was meaningless? how dare you! poor tenko...how could you do this to her!?” “h-himiko...” “himiko, stop it with your crappy lies.” “lies...?” “everything you said is total bs. you didn’t give two shits about tenko when she was alive...but now you’re like, “oh no! poor tenko!” after she’s dead. c’mon, really?” “kokichi! enough!” ok first of all the voice acting here is so fucking good. himiko’s first shout before she dissolves into tears made me flinch in my seat, and kokichi is so low and cold and vicious. it’s also personally satisfying to me that’s it’s *gonta* who tells kokichi to stfu here, and that kokichi *listens* - he won’t bring this up again until after the trial, when he’s significantly gentler about it.
-”alright! i’ll put a silencing curse on whoever calls tenko’s death meaningless! the name of the curse is...Death Curse!” “i, um...suppose being dead would silence someone pretty good.” himiko and tsumugi r such a funny duo, they should’ve been besties
-”no, even if it was a different culprit, we need to know how tenko died. if we don’t find out who killed her, we won’t be able to work together. not now, not ever.” kaito is correct here however pls consider: me and tsumugi would really enjoy the paranoia and angst of knowing one of the group is a blackened!!
-”finally, you noticed! geez, you’re so slow...” “huh? did kokichi want us to notice-” FUCK now i really wish i transcribed it, but there was a bit early on in the trial where shuichi proves miu wrong and she claims she was just doing a bit to lead them to the right answer, and gonta says that’s really smart of her - he’s clearly applying the same concept here, and it makes me wonder how often he does so. tracking the thought processes of v3 characters is always so fascinating...
-”let us talk about tenko’s case, then. perhaps that will provide us a clue.” “y-yeah, maybe...” [i don’t mind going over tenko’s case, but...that was an abrupt change of topic. was that...intentional...?] HOLY SHIT WE ARE HALF AN HOUR INTO A FOUR HOUR TRIAL AND SHUICHI’S ALREADY CAUGHT ON. the serial killer backstory is definitely bullshit, kiyo literally cannot hide a murder to save his life.
-”well, that’s probably just a coinky-dink. the most suspicious out of us four is really...kiyo!” i’m starting to feel bad for the guy this is so embarrassing 😭
-”kehehe...it’s appearing before me...ooooh! i can see it clearly! the true identity of tenko’s killer!” bro you are laying it on WAY TOO THICK
-”maybe the floor and the hole have nothing to do with this case.” ”then why was floorboard under tenko lined up funny? gonta think that was so culprit could stab tenko from under floor...” “ooohh! nice observation, gonta! are you finally getting used to the class trials?” “uh-huh. thank you.” no offense but v3′s resident clown act obliterated me and then had a picnic on my grave i would simply quit murder.
-the entire rebuttal showdown is just miu correctly singling out kiyo - again - but being completely wrong about the method, so you have to disprove her. i’m in TEARS.

Kyoko and Makoto - Cross-Dressing
Makoto: Enemies are crawling through this dungeon. Starting to worry that we might be a little outmatched here. Kyoko: Makoto, I appreciate your sternness and sincerity to the mission, but...Why are you wearing that? Makoto: I uh...Well, it’s just us two here, right? And you said you liked it when I did this... Kyoko: Y-Yes, that is true, but...why HERE? If you’re trying to use your clothing to break the tension, I admit that you’ve succeeded. Makoto: Well uh... Kyoko: No...perhaps you’re using it as a means to distract the enemies? I suppose that’s an interesting tactic... Makoto: No, Kyoko, seriously...you’re overthinking this... Kyoko: Well, what is it then? Surely you didn’t wear this thing of your own will just to appease me? Makoto: Is that...really so strange?  [Comms Open] Chihiro: I hope you like it Kyoko. Sayaka’s makeup really was something else, and I spent a lot of time handpicking the outfit. Makoto: GAH!? Ch-Chihiro!? You’re still here!? Chihiro: Well, I still have to be on comms in case something goes wrong. Don’t worry, I’ll leave you lovebirds be and won’t tell a soul. [Comms Close] Makoto: Yeah, he uh...kinda gave me a hand with it. Kyoko: You...took this very seriously. Makoto: Yeah, more than I should have. Is it too much? Kyoko: *blushes* No...To be honest...You look very cute...It’s difficult to look you in the eyes right now. I suppose it’s not the enemies who would be distracted, but me. Makoto: Aw, Kyoko...You should have just said so. Kyoko: Even so, are you sure you’re ok with this? You’re not in the least bit embarrassed. Makoto: Oh, I’m definitely embarrassed. But I’ve done worse. One mission isn’t gonna be the end of me. Makoto: I don’t want to distract you from the goal, but if you need a break to just stop and admire me, admire away. Kyoko: Hehe...Why does dressing like that give you MORE confidence? Makoto: If it works for Chihiro, it can work for me too. Now let’s get a move on!

Hajime and Mahiru - Getting down to Business
Mahiru: You look nice today Hajime. Very neat and tidy. Hajime: Thanks, I’m glad you like it. Decided to take your advice and clean up my act a little bit for today’s mission. Mahiru: You know I only said that in jest. Still, it’s a shame. This outfit looks nice on you, but it’s likely to get dirty while out here. [Comms Open] Chiaki: It’d look a lot better on your floor though Mahiru~ Mahiru: CHIAKI!? Who taught you that one!? Hajime: Yeah, don’t steal my lines! Mahiru: Exactly-Wait WHAT!? Hajime: Look, just keep an eye out. I’ll call you if I need you. Chiaki: Got it. [Comms Close] Mahiru: Wh-What is THAT supposed to mean? Hajime: Well, I am wearing business attire...so how about after we’re done here...you and I get “busy?” Mahiru: Hajime you are...! ...making me cringe honestly... Hajime: Yeah, I heard that leave my mouth and almost immediately regretted it...I’m starting to think I’m not good at these pickup lines... Mahiru: Funny that. Still though... Hajime: Hm? Mahiru: *blushes* It’s not like I’m about to say no to that offer... Hajime: Huh? Mahiru: N-NEVER MIND! You didn’t hear that! Ugh! Let’s just go already! Hajime: Haha...Ladies first~

Shuichi and Kaede - Submissive Bunny Boy
Kaede: Hey, Shuchi? Shuichi: Here it comes...Yes Kaede? Kaede: Quick Question? Is there a way we can momentarily deactivate comms and eye in the sky for a moment? Shuichi: What? Like...shut it all down you mean? Kaede: Just for a bit. I’ll turn it back on before we actually move out. Shuichi: Um...There should be a way...Give me one second. *Shuichi deactivates comms. Shuichi: Alright, communications are down. No one can hear us. Kaede: Can they still see us? Shuichi: You want to turn that off too? Kaede: Yes! Shuichi: Why!? Kaede: Just do it, you’ll see! Shuichi: Fine... *Shuichi deactivates satellite. Shuichi: Now no one can see or hear us. What are you trying to-MPPH! Kaede: Mmmmgh~ Shuichi: Mah! Ngh! K-Kaede!? MMRPH! Kaede: Mpha! S-Sorry Shuichi...I hit my limit...! Mngh~ Shuichi: Ka-Kaede...Mmgh~ Kaede: HOO! Glad I got that out of my system! Shuichi: OW! *After vigorously making out with him in his bunny outfit, Kaede drops Shuichi. Kaede: Right then! Mission time! Now that all distractions are out of the way, I’m more ready than ever! Oh and uh...you can turn comms and satellite back on Shuichi~ *Kaede exaunts, leaving Shuichi lying on the ground. Shuichi: *smitten* I love her...

Toko and Komaru - Idol under the Spotlight.
Toko: I still cannot believe I am doing this. Komaru: It’s just for one mission Koko-chan. You can put up with it. Toko: Stop calling me that! My name is Toko, not Koko-chan! Komaru: But all idols need a stage name, don’t they?  Toko: Yeah, but I already know that if you give me some dumb nickname it’s gonna stick with me forever! I don’t wanna be called Koko, or Toki, or something stupid like that! Komaru: Hey! You said you liked Toki! Toko: When did I say that!? It’s a stupid nickname, you literally just changed a single letter! Komaru: You know what? That’s a good point... Toko: *sigh* Komaru: *puts hand on Toko’s shoulder* Hey, Toko. Thanks for doing this for me. Toko: If I lose a bet, I’m going to go through with the conditions of the god damned bet.  Komaru: Yeah, but even so. You didn’t HAVE to do this for me. Toko: Well, I guess not. It’s a bit too late to change anway...Besides, as much as I hate to admit it, this is surprisingly comfortable despite it’s...intricacies. Komaru: Well, no point giving idols something stuffy and uncomfortable when they’re jumping up and down on stage all the time. Toko: This seriously sucks...Ugh...Guess I just need to kill a bunch of Monokuma’s to take my mind off of these. Komaru: Sounds good to me! Let’s put on our own special performance for them! Let’s go Koko-chan! Toko: UUUUUUGH!
Tumblr media
Kuripa and Kibin - THAT one.
[Comms Open] Rantaro: Kuripa...is that outfit what I think it is? Kuripa: Oh, you like it? It’s perfect for a stealthy operation  Rantaro: Suure...Stealth... Kuripa: What, WHAT!? What’s that supposed to mean!? Rantaro: Nothing...Just...make sure you get this done as soon as you can. [Comms Close] Kuripa: Uuugh! Why did I do this!? Kibin: Hey! I wore the erotic spandex on our last mission. Fair’s fair. Kuripa: Yeah, but like...Still! I knew he’d see through it! Kibin: Are you...embarrassed? Kuripa: N-No! It’s just...well...this outfit doesn’t offer much in terms of protection, does it? I kind of feel exposed. Kibin: And you actually care for once? Kuripa: I have SOME dignity! Look at me! I look like a freak! Kibin: You ARE a freak. Kuripa: Not the kind of freak who goes out at night molesting people! Seriously, what exactly are you getting out of this? Kibin: Oh believe me Kuripa...I’m just biding my time. Kuripa: For...what exactly? *Kibin leans in close to his ear. Kibin: I’m just waiting to find the perfect spot on this mission...somewhere we’ll be out of eye and earshot of any and all allies and enemies... Kuripa: Uh...!? Kibin: Once we are, I promise you...I will partake of you to my leisure, and play with you to my heart’s desire...I’ll make you feel things that you’ve never felt before... Kuripa: Mpph...! *Kibin takes Kuripa’s hand. Kibin: That black mask doesn’t hide your blush Kurafto. Now that your horny little mind is motivated, let’s get to work~ Kuripa: Y-Yes ma’am...Hehe...

//I haven’t done Sora and Yoruko because I couldn’t think of a single thing for it without repeating what was said with Hajime and Mahiru. For now that’s all I’ve got.

"BUE BUE! BUE BUE LIVES!
Hm, I wonder where on earth Elladess Enel is? I was like what do you mean you’re connected to Enel ? Like how he is connected to Nathan ? But you’re not a tall noodle redheaded boy … But now I wonder if she can sense those affected by Walter’s Curse because she made it. Or perhaps she has another curse set up to check up on the health and welfare of Hollingsworths. Maybe she has an Enel-specific one, since he is a crazy noodle boi and runs a higher risk of getting into some ridiculous accident than the average person. Or maybe breaking legs connects people. At first I thought Avidan was sad about Enel and was like aw, he really does care! But then I remembered that boat also had his cousins on it. But given he’s holding Bue Bue, maybe he really is sad about Enel. Man, I really want those guys to be bros again someday. He wants to tell Velvare! Oh, what a thing to say! There’s a lot to unpack there but I don’t think I am going to right now. um girl?? uM GIRL !! Melete what are you doing MELETE !!! When I picked this face six years ago, I didn’t know that she would be doing stuff like this! Girl, stop!! What!? Every page I hope Melete will explain and apologize and do better, and every page she keeps doing stuff like this! She’s just digging the hole deeper! She’s as reluctant to apologize as Velvare, isn’t she?? I guess I shouldn’t have expected a woman who literally cursed herself to be immortal in order to avoid her husband to be anything less than uncompromising in any other area of her conduct. To make a decision that extreme and that permanent, and to not regret it even a little bit, 800 years later? Yeah, why would she change her mind on anything small? Why would she admit fault for anything she’s done? Why take responsibility for doing a poor job when you can just blame and curse your way out of it? Some of this was probably out of her control, especially once Ayran entered the picture, but not all of it! There’s so many things she could have done to make this journey go better. Maybe she’s got some old Nedarian jewelry she could've passed out so everyone would be safe from weavers if they fell off the boat. Maybe she could’ve teleported to the Novalog and hid there, just in case something went wrong. Just camp out in Enel’s candy cane barrel or something, ready to jump out and do her magic stuff if needed. Maybe just not be so secretive about whatever this Aetius thing is? He threw an anchor at them, and they don’t even all know who he is, or why he’s after them, or anything. Could’ve been helpful if she’d told the Novasquad a bit more about who’s on Shippy McShipface. Oh, hey guys, before you embark on this perilous voyage, just fyi, Avidan contacted me and asked to keep you safe! So I will do that! By the way, that ship that’s after you? There’s this guy named Aetius, and here’s the beans on that; Noah, he’s got Ruya; and also Apen, your dead baby brother? He isn’t actually dead he’s on that ship and Aetius is using him to curse people! Alright, good talk, see you if things go wrong! Why do I get the feeling that she made this promise assuming everything would be fine and that she wouldn’t have to do anything, and was totally unprepared to deal with even the slightest mishap I sincerely hope that Melete is not Bad, just Bad At Life.
I have been loving the arts, whenever they appear! I can’t wait to see Nathan and Enel interact in-comic. It’s gonna be chaos."

P5R: Rebel Girl (A FeMC Story/P5R Rework) Chapter 129: ...Till Dusk
Sae was busy working on her cases. As her boss had told her, everyone else was being pulled away in every direction to account for the sheer chaos the day had brought. She didn’t mind. As helpful as her coworkers could be in any given situation, there was always something of a gap between them and her.
There was a knock at her door. “Come in!” she said.
Riko opened the door. “I brought you that file you asked for.”
Sae sighed. “This is the third time I’ve told you, if it’s just you, you don’t need to knock.”
“Well, I think it’s just good manners,” Riko replied. “You could be frustrated and not want me in here.”
“I suppose you’re right,” Sae replied. Riko handed her the file. “Thanks.”
“No problem,” Riko said. Her stomach growled. “Heh heh,” she laughed nervously. “Sorry.”
Sae’s stomach growled at the same time. Sae grew embarrassed as well. “I suppose we should both take a break to get something to eat.”
“Good idea,” Riko said.
Sae looked at Riko. She remembered her boss’ words. “I know it’s not your strong suit, but do try to make her feel welcome.” Sae did want to make her feel welcome (and also prove her boss wrong). “Say, why don’t we eat together?”
“Are you sure?” Riko asked.
Sae nodded. “We’re both hungry. And also, this could be a good opportunity to get to know each other better. After all, this was kind of a surprise. At least for me.”
“Well, I can’t argue with that…” Riko agreed.
“So, is there any place you like going?” Sae said.
“Oh,” Riko exclaimed, put on the spot. “I thought you’d decide where we go.”
“Well…” Sae said. She was hesitant. “The truth is, I’m so busy with all my work that I can’t focus on much else. Especially since this whole Phantom Thieves thing. So I just go to wherever’s close.”
“I see,” Riko said. “Well, that’s sort of why I’m here, isn’t it?” Sae nodded. “In that case, I know a great Korean Barbeque place not too far from here.”
“Lead the way,” Sae said. Riko nodded, and the two women headed off.
They had arrived and placed their orders. “Ah. I can’t wait,” Riko said.
“You must really love this place,” Sae said.
“Totally,” Riko replied.
Sae gave her an inquisitive look. “Do you know a lot of good restaurants in the area?”
Riko nodded. “Yeah. Not just around here, but all over the city.”
“I see,” Sae smiled. “Perhaps you can take me to one of them the next time we do this.”
“Eh heh,” Riko laughed, nervously. “I’m glad you believe they’ll be a next time.”
“Of course,” Sae said. The waiter came over and delivered their food. “Thank you.” Riko started eating hers. Sae took one bite. A wave of flavor washed over her, and she was stunned. “Wow. This really is excellent.”
“Hm hm. Told ya!” Riko said, cheerfully.
“I had no doubts,” Sae said. They two continued eating. After a little while, Sae gave Riko a curious look.
Riko noticed this. She finished swallowing her food. “What?”
“I’m just wondering something,” Sae replied. “Tell me: How do you feel about the Phantom Thieves?”
Riko was surprised. “Um, why do you want to know that?” she asked nervously. “I mean, you’re investigating them, right?”
“It’s because I’m investigating them that I am asking,” Sae said. “If I want to succeed, I have to take everything into account. I’ve talked with people who say they were saved by the Phantom Thieves. Understanding how they are perceived gives me a leg up when investigating them. So I will ask again: How do you feel about the Phantom Thieves?”
Riko was a little surprised. She took a deep breath. “Well, um, I guess to be honest, I actually really like the Phantom Thieves.”
“Oh?”
Riko nodded. “Based on everything I’ve seen, they seem to really care about the people they’re helping. Besides, a part of me likes the fact that they aren’t marred down by anything and get stuff done. Ah, I don’t mean to diminish the work you do. I think it’s just different. You have to go through all sorts of things to make sure you have everything right. I mean, as helpful as the Phantom Thieves may be, they can’t process the sheer volume of crimes your office does.”
Sae took a sip of her drink. “Our office,” she corrected. Riko was confused. “You work here now too, remember?”
“Oh, right…” Riko said, slightly embarrassed.  “Eh heh.”
“It's fine,” Sae assured. “You’re still getting used to everything.” She took another sip. “But I will say, you have taken to the job quite well so far.”
“Thanks,” Riko replied.
“Getting back to the matter at hand,” Sae said. “I appreciate the words of kindness for our department. However, I will say I do sometimes wish I had the ability to get stuff done as quickly as the Phantom Thieves. But we must play with the hands we’re dealt with.”
“Right…” Riko said, slightly disappointed.
“However,” Sae continued. “That doesn’t mean we can’t reshuffle things. We just need to figure out how.”
Riko smiled. “Right.” They continued eating.
Once they finished, Sae said “I have to say, this has been one of the best lunches I’ve had in a while. Thanks for recommending this place. I have to remember it for later.”
Riko smiled and blushed. “Thanks.”
“And thanks for being such good company as well,” Sae continued.
Riko was blushing a little harder now. “Th…Thanks…” They paid and headed back to work.
As Ren was on her way back from lunch, an announcement came over the intercom. “Ren Amamiya, please report to the teacher’s room.” Ren was a little unsure, but headed over.
When she arrived, she was greeted by Miss Kawakami. “Hi,” she said.
Ren relaxed a little. “Hi.”
“Hm hm,” Kawakami chuckled. “I just wanted to tell you something.”
“What is it?” Ren asked.
Kawakami looked around to make sure no one else was around. “I told the Takases I’m not paying them anymore!” she whispered excitedly.
“Really?” Ren wondered. Kawakami nodded. “Well that’s great!”
“I know!” Kawakami said. “Finally, I can get back to being the teacher I want to be.”
“Um, Miss Kawakami!” a voice said. “A Mr. and Mrs. Takase are here to see you!”
“WHAT?!” Kawakami gasped.
The Takases stormed over in a huff. “What is the meaning of all of this?!”
“It’s like I told you, I believe I paid you more than enough,” Kawakami said, standing firm.
“You’re putting a price tag on our son’s life?!” Mrs. Takase shrieked.
“Of course not,” Kawakami said. “Nothing I do could bring him back. But I believe I’ve done everything I can to honor him.”
“That’s NOT for you to decide!” Mr. Takase snapped.
Kawakami steeled herself. “I think Takase wanted me to be a great teacher to help others like him. And I intend to hold myself to that.”
“How can you speak for our Taiki?!” Mrs. Takase screamed. “You killed him!”
Kawakami felt that sting, but pressed on. “I disagree.”
“WHAT?!” Mrs. Takase shrieked.
“What happened to Taiki was unfortunate,” Kawakami said, “but it was an accident.”
Mr. Takase grew mad. “Listen here! You think you’re so high and mighty! You should have had your teaching license revoked! Although, I imagine the process will be fast when we tell the school you’re a sex-worker on the side.
Kawakami broke. “WHAT?!”
“Heh I knew it,” chuckled Mr. Takase. “Your teacher’s salary isn’t enough to pay us!”
“P-Please…” Kawakami begged.
“I’ll consider not saying anything IF you drop this nonsense of not paying us,” Mr. Takase said.
“...Fine,” Kawakami replied.
“That’s it,” Mr. Takase said. He turned to Ren. “Oh hey. It’s you. I bet you put her up to this.”
“And if I did?” Ren wondered.
“Psh,” Mr. Takase grumbled.
“We know you’re just trying to help someone,” Mrs. Takase said. “But trust me, she’s beyond redemption.”
“Really?” Ren said. “Because that sounds more like you two.”
The Takases were shocked. Mr. Takase raised his hand. “You LITTLE BI-”
“STOP!” Kawakami protested. “You leave her out of this! I’m the one you want!”
Mr. Takase stopped. He put his hand down. He stared down Kawakami. “We’re expecting your next payment soon.” The Takases walked out.
Kawakami resigned herself. She sighed. “Are you alright?” Ren asked.
Kawakami tried to smile. “Yeah.” Her smile broke almost immediately. “No.” She sighed again. “Maybe I am beyond redemption. I can’t do anything right.” She put her head in her hands. “Ugh! I’m such a failure.”
“That’s not true,” Ren tried assuring her.
“It is,” Kawakami said. “I can’t even break away from my past. My shame.”
“Uh, you don’t really work as a sex worker though, right?” Ren asked.
“I might as well, as far as the school is concerned,” Kawakami replied. “And I might have to now…” Kawakami sighed. “I wish someone could help me. I’d ask the Phantom Thieves, but after ignoring everything with Kamoshda, I doubt they’d help me…”
Ren grew a little determined. “Say…” Kawakami looked at her. “What are their names?”
Kawakami was stunned. “Their names? Why? Are you going to tell the Phantom Thieves?” Kawakami slumped over. “Well…I don’t really care, I guess. They’re names are Toshio and Hiromi Takase. I’ve had to write so many checks their names are burned into my memory. Just…be sure to not get involved yourself… You’re on probation as it is. I’d hate for you to get arrested again.”
Ren nodded. “I understand.”
Kawakami sighed and said “Take care…”
“Thanks,” Ren said. She left. Don’t worry. So long as my mask doesn’t come off, I should be fine.
During the afternoon classes, Ryuji messaged the group.
Ryuji: So, where are we meeting?
Makoto: What did I say about paying attention in class?
Ryuji: I am!
Futaba: TBH, I don’t think it would help much…
Ryuji: HEY!
Ren: I think the cafe will be fine.
Ann: Are you sure?
Ren: Sojiro said he had some business to attend to.
Ren: I don’t know if he’s back or not though.
Futaba: He’s not.
Yusuke: How can you be sure?
Futaba: Cameras.
Yusuke: Right.
Jose: Will you tell us if anything changes?
Futaba: Sure.
Futaba: If anything changes, just come over to my place.
Lena: Sounds like a plan.
Sumire: Can’t wait!
Ren put her phone away and went back to paying attention to class.
After school got out, Ren and Ann started to head out to meet the others. Before they could get far, they heard a sharp “HEY!” They turned around, and to their surprise, it was Yumeko Mogami: the weird stalker girl whose heart they changed. “I wanna talk with you!” She pointed at Ren, sending a jolt up her spine. Yumeko softened up. “Um…please?’
Ren and Ann were still surprised. “Uh, just a second…” Ren said. They huddled up. “What should I do?”
“Well…” Ann pondered. “We did change her heart. How dangerous could she be?”
“I guess…”
“Tell you what:” Ann said, “You can go with her, and I’ll stay behind. Just message me if things get too extreme.”
Morgana popped out. “And I’ll be there in case things go sour right away,” he said.
Ren smiled. “Thanks. You’re good friends.”
Ann nodded. “So are you.”
They got out of their huddle, and Morgana returned to the bag. “Alright then,” Ren agreed.
Yumeko got even more sheepish and said “Th-thanks…”
“So, do you want to talk here?” Ren asked.
Yumeko became more alert. “NO! … I mean…no…”
Ren was perplexed. “Um, alright…
Yumeko grew more serious. “Follow me.” She started walking.
“Alright then…” Ren said. She started following Yumeko.
As she was following Yumeko, Ren noticed her phone was going off.
Ann: Ren and I are going to be a bit late.
Ryuji: But she has the key!
Ann: Something came up.
Sumire: Oh no. Are you alright?
Ren: I think I’ll be fine.
Ren: I’m still a little nervous.
Ann: We have this under control.
Ryuji: Fine.
Futaba: I also have a key.
Ryuji: For real?!
Futaba: Yup!
Futaba: Although don’t tell Sojiro.
Yusuke: What do we do if he returns?
Futaba: I’m tracking his location through his phone.
Futaba: We can get out of there before he gets back.
Ryuji: You’re scary sometimes.
Futaba: I will take that as a compliment.
“Hey,” Yumeko asked. Ren looked up to see she was looking back at her. “Who are you texting?”
“Oh, just some friends,” Ren answered. “I was going to meet them when…”
“I see…” Yumeko said. She faced forward again. “Sorry…”
Ren smiled nervously. “You’re fine.” Their walk continued.
They eventually made their way to the room before the entrance of the roof. “And here we are.”
Ren was curious. “So, what’s this about?” Yumeko showed her her phone, and immediately Ren was paralyzed. It was a picture from earlier in the day where she and Sumire were in the middle of an embrace after lunch. Ren tensed up. “What do you want?” she asked, angrily.
Yumeko was a little frightened. “Um…advice…?” Ren was confused again. She turned her phone back to herself. “Based on these pictures, I can tell you two are something special… And I want that.” She put her phone away. “So I’m asking how.”
Ren was still a little tense, but let go somewhat. “I see…”
“I was kind of hoping we could sort this all out…” Yumeko said. “But… if you have friends to meet…”
Ren was still a bit on-guard. “Just to be clear, you have no problem with the fact that I’m dating another girl?”
“Huh?” Yumeko said. “No? Why would I?”
“Well…not so much you specifically…but you as a perfect stranger…” Ren explained.
“Oh… Right…” Yumeko said. “Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!”
“Hey hey now,” Ren said, trying to calm her down. “Relax. I think we’re OK here.”
Yumeko calmed down a little. “Sorry… Thanks…”
Ren relaxed herself. “No problem.”
Yumeko sighed. “It’s just… I’ve been living in this dark vortex for some time. I only really broke free of it recently. But…I still haven’t adjusted to living a normal life and trying to get the boy I like normally. So I was hoping I could get some advice.”
Ren understood her concern well. “I see. Well, for starters, I don’t think this is a good way to try and talk to someone. And spying on someone definitely isn’t something that you do if you want to curry favor with them.”
Yumeko sighed. “Right…” She was starting to get agitated again.
“BUT,” Ren said, “once you explained things, I grew more open.”
Yumeko seemed intrigued. “Huh.”
“So what does that tell you?” Ren asked.
Yumeko thought about it. “UGH!”
“Hey, it’s OK,” Ren said. “It’s just you, me, and the floorboards here.”
Yumeko calmed down again. She continued thinking. “That I should be more open…?”
“See? You got it!” Ren said.
“But how?” Yumeko asked. “Everyone sees me as this…weirdo! How can I open up to someone who might shut the door on me?”
Ren really felt the pain in the question. She decided to respond honestly. “So, I wasn’t always that girl you see in that photo you took.”
This interested Yumeko. “You weren’t?”
Ren shook her head. “I had to work to get to that point.”
“I see,” Yumeko said, fully invested.
“And if I can do it, so can you,” Ren said.
“Are…are you sure?” Yumeko said.
“Positive,” Ren replied.
Yumeko looked at the ground. “I…guess it couldn’t hurt.”
Ren giggled. “And if you ever want to talk, just message me.”
Yumeko looked at her. “You mean it?” Ren nodded. “Does…does that mean we’re friends?”
“Yup,” Ren answered. “Friends.”
I am thou... Thou art I… Thou hast acquired a new vow...
It shall become the wings of rebellion that breaketh thy chains of captivity.
With the birth of the Charity Persona I have obtained the winds of blessing that shall lead to freedom and new power.
Charity-Yumeko Mogami: Rank 1
Yumeko cheered um immensely. “Yay! I made a friend.”
Ren nodded. “Now, just remember what I told you, and I’m sure you’ll make more friends.” She checked her phone. “I should get going.”
“Oh, right,” Yumeko said. “Your other friends.” She started waving enthusiastically. “Bye!” She charged down the stairs.
Ren waved more calmly. “Bye.” She headed down the stairs herself.
As she was heading down, Morgana popped out again. “Why did you help her?”
Ren grew a little solemn. “She…kind of reminded me of me…”
“I don’t think you went as psychotic as her,” Morgana said.
“Yeah,” Ren agreed. “I went in the opposite direction though. I regressed.”
“I see,” Morgana replied.
“I know how much I could have used a friend,” Ren continued. “So I think she could use one as well.”
Morgana smiled. “That’s such a you sentence.”
Ren giggled. “Thanks.” Just after she got all the way down, she almost bumped into the girl with the watering can. “Oh, sorry…” she said.
The girl laughed. “It’s quite alright. Nothing happened.”
“Right,” Ren said.
“Although, I have to wonder,” the girl said, “did…you go to the roof?”
Ren shook her head. “Just before.”
“OK then,” the girl replied. “I’m just asking because the roof is closed for everyone except club members.”
“And you’re one of them?” Ren asked.
The girl nodded. “I’m a member of the gardening club.”
“I see,” Ren said. “I should have been able to piece that together.”
“Well, I imagine you have a lot on your mind,” the girl said. “I sometimes get forgetful when I’m lost in thought.”
“Right,” Ren agreed.
“I’m sorry,” the girl said. “I didn’t mean to keep you waiting.”
Ren chuckled. “It’s fine. So, I’ll see you around then?”
“Yeah,” the girl said. Ren could detect a trace amount of hollowness in her voice. “See you around.” She walked up the stairs to go take care of her club duty.
Ren was curious about this girl, but couldn’t act without more information. She decided to put it on the backburner for now and got out her phone.
Ren: I'm on my way down now.
Ann: Sweet!
They switched to the group chat.
Ren: We’re on our way!
Jose: Alright!
Makoto: We can finally get this ball rolling.
Ryuji: I’m still concerned…
Futaba: Relax, Sojiro isn’t anywhere near here.
Ryuji: Well, if you say so.
Lena: I think that’s just who Ryuji is.
Futaba: Probably.
Ann: Definitely.
Ryuji: Why d’ya gotta be like that?
Ann: I think it’s sweet.
Ryuji: Well…if you think it’s sweet…
Jose: So flattery from Ann works on Ryuji, huh.
Ryuji: …
Ryuji: I’m just gonna shut up now.
Ren: Like I said, we’ll be there soon.
Ren put her phone away. She met up with Ann, and they headed to Leblanc.
On their way, Ann asked “So, what did she want?”
Ren was a bit embarrassed. “She…wanted a friend…”
“Huh?” Ann said.
Morgana popped out. “She needs help dealing with her change of heart.”
Ann was alerted. “She knew you did it?”
“No!’ Ren assured her. “She…called me out for…other reasons…”
Ann was confused again. “She hadn’t let go of everything as much as we’d like…” Morgana said.
“I see…?” Ann said, still a bit confused, but decided not to press on. “Anyway, I can’t wait until we get there.”
Ren nodded. “Right.” They continued on their way.
Meanwhile, there was a knock at the door to Dr. Maruki’s office. “Come in!” he called out. The door opened and Kawakami was standing there. “Oh. Miss Kawakami. What a surprise. How are you doing?”
Kawakami closed the door, walked over to the couch, flopped onto it, and screamed into the cushion. “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”
“I…take it you’re not doing great,” Maruki said.
Kawkami lifted her head. “THAT’S an understatement.”
“Eh heh,” Maruki laughed nervously. “Well, I’m supposed to be here for the students…” Kawakami glared at him. “But I can’t turn down someone in need.” Kawakami sighed. “So, how may I help?”
Kawakami sat up. “Well, you know my secret…”
“Right…” Maruki said.
Kawakami groaned. “I don’t do that just for kicks.”
“Then why do you do it?” Maruki asked.
“Well, that’s the thing…” Kawakami said. She explained her circumstances.
Maruki was shocked by every detail. “Oh my!”
“Ugh, I know!” Kawakami said. “The worst thing is I feel like I’m in the palm of their hand. I hate that. I wanted to be something more. But… I can’t…”
Maruki was chilled by her harrowing story. He smiled hollowly. “You know… It’s times like this that I wish I could do more.” Kawkami was surprised. “But alas, all I can do is listen and offer support.”
“Well…” Kawakami said, sheepishly, “that’s not entirely a bad thing.” Maruki was surprised. “Just…having someone you can rely on means a lot. It’s…why I came here…”
Maruki smiled. “Right.”
Kawakami sighed. “I mean, when Amamiya-chan found out, I felt better just talking about all of this.”
“I see,” Maruki replied. He grew a little curious. “So, do you just want me to listen, or would you like some advice as well?” he asked.
“Hm,” Kawakami sighed. “Well…” She looked up at him. “Uhhhh…” She looked into his eyes, got a little startled, hung her head, and said “I don’t suppose any advice could hurt.”
“Hm,” Maruki responded. “I guess that’s true as well.” He began to think. “Hmmmmm. Well, I’m not entirely sure what to do. But it might help if you took a break from moonlighting like say once a week.”
Kawakami shook her head. “The Takase’s are very demanding. The only way I could afford to do that is if I…escalate my services...”
“Oh!’ Maruki said, surprised. “I…see…” Both of them got a little embarrassed. “Um, anyway… Hmmm. Well, I guess I could loan you some money.”
Kawakami was shocked. “WHAT?!” She looked away. “N-No…I couldn’t ask that of you…”
“Well, I’m offering,” Maruki explained.
“Still…” Kawakami moaned. “They’re bleeding me dry. I don’t want to owe money to someone else.”
“Well, what if I didn’t expect you to pay it back?” Maruki asked.
Kawakami was shocked. She frowned again. “I still couldn’t accept. I don’t want to drag someone down with me…”
“Hmmm,” Maruki said. “I know you said advice wouldn’t hurt…but we seem to be at an impasse.”
“Ugh,” Kawakami groaned. “I know…”
“Hmmm,” Maruki pondered. “Well, let’s try something from left field.”
Kawakami looked up at him, curious. “Like what?”
“Well, what if you asked the Phantom Thieves for help?” Maruki suggested. “They might be willing to intervene.”
“Oh…” Kawakami said, dryly.
Maruki was curious. “Ummmm, something the matter?”
“Well,” Kawakami said, “I think Amamiya might have that covered.”
“Huh?” Maruki asked.
“I mentioned earlier that I tried breaking it off with the Takases,” Kawakami explained, “but they came here and threatened me further.”
“Right.”
“Well, Amamiya-chan was with me during that,” Kawakami said. “And in my weakness, I suggested that. But it seems like she’s running with it. But still, that’s a maybe at best…”
Maruki was puzzled. “What makes you say that?”
Kawakami folded into herself. “Because of the whole Kamoshida thing.” Maruki was more confused. Kawkami looked up. “I mean, he was their first target, right? The Phantom Thieves might see me as someone who helped facilitate his behavior. I can’t say I blame them.”
“Did you?” Maruki asked.
“Not…really?” Kawakami said. She buried her head again. “Ugh. It’s so confusing.”
“Well, we have time,” Maruki said.
Kawkami looked back up. “Mmmm.” She remained silent for a bit. “I…had heard things…but when I went to Principal Kobayakawa, he told me things would be OK. And I believed him. And with what’s been happening with the Takases and I, I…couldn’t make time to make sure that that was true.”
“Hm,” Maruki reacted.
“And…there’s something else…” Kawakami admitted.
“Which is?” Maruki asked.
“Well…before his arrest, he and I had a really good rapport,” Kawakami said. “I…sort of developed a little crush on him.”
“OH!” Maruki said, surprised.
“I mean, if you didn’t know that side of him, he was an affable guy,” Kawakami said. “He’d always offer advice. And it was kind of easy to talk to him. In many ways, he reminded me of my high school boyfriend. But like my high school boyfriend, he turned out like that.”
“Oh my!” Maruki said, shaken to his core. “Um, pardon me for asking, but if your high school boyfriend was like Kamoshida, did he ever…?”
“Huh?” Kawakami said, surprised. “Oh, no! He wanted to leave me ‘pristine’. Well, he said he wanted both of us to be ‘pristine’, but he went around doing whatever and whoever he liked,” she said bitterly.
“Oof,” Maruki said. “He…sounds unpleasant, if you don’t mind me saying.”
“I said worse to his face when I broke up with him,” Kawakami replied. “The worst thing is, even after I broke up with him, people still blamed me for not keeping him in check. And…part of me thinks they’re right… Ugh! I feel so worthless.”
Maruki felt Kawakami’s pain. He stood up with determination, walked over to her, put his hands on her shoulders. She looked up at him, and he assured her “You are not worthless. You are not responsible for other people’s shortcomings. You are a kind and caring individual just caught in horrible circumstances. Believe me, you are perfect just the way you are.” Kawakami was surprised, and blushed. Maruki reacted with surprise and a blush of his own. He let go of Kawakami. “Eh heh, sorry. That was maybe a little forward of me.”
Kawakami calmed down. “No… I think I needed that. Besides, I’ve been putting up walls left and right. It’s only fair that if you wanted to get through to me, you needed to break out the wrecking ball.”
“Eh heh,” Maruki laughed nervously.
Kawakami smiled. “Well, I guess this doesn’t fix everything, but I’m glad I came here.”
“Eh heh, thanks,” Maruki said, slightly embarrassed. “Oh, and about whether or not the Phantom Thieves will help you, I don’t think you’ll need to worry about that.”
“Hm,” Kawakami responded. “Well, as much as I’d like to believe that, especially since you’re saying it, only time will tell.”
“Right…” Maruki said, wanting to keep his lips sealed.
Kawakami stood up. “Well, as much as I’ve enjoyed this, I should get going. I don’t want to be late.”
“For what?” Maruki asked. Kawakami gave him a puzzled look. “Oh, right. Sorry.”
Kawakami sighed. “It’s fine. Take care.”
“You too,” Maruki said. Kawakami left. “Hmmmm,” he wondered to himself. “I know the kids have been saying similar things, but it feels different coming from one of my peers…”
Meanwhile, Kawakami was on her way out of school. She was a little flustered herself. “What…what happened just now?” She continued on her way out.
Back in Sae’s office, she was looking through some documents. She was looking for something, anything, that could help unravel the case. Just then, something caught her eyes. She began looking into it a little further. “Hmmmm,” she pondered. She looked at her door.
She opened it to face Riko. Riko jolted up a little. “Uh, hi.”
“May I speak with you?” Sae asked.
Riko settled down. “Oh. Of course.”
Sae nodded. “Step into my office,” she said. Riko did. Sae sat back down in the chair. She gestured to one of the other chairs. “Please, have a seat.”
Riko sat down. “Erm, so Miss Niijima, why did you call me in here?”
“I just want some advice,” Sae said.
“By all means,” Riko said.
Sae nodded. She looked back at her laptop. “I’ve been going through some data, and I think I found something.”
“OK,” Riko said.
“The issue is that I don’t know if it’ll amount to anything,” Sae continued.
“Why is that?” Riko asked.
Sae sighed. “Because this whole mental shutdown-Phantom Thieves thing has been confusing from the word go. There’s not a lot of evidence to go off of. Not only that, but one mistake could tank this whole investigation, and me with it. I just want to make sure I have everything in order.”
“I see,” Riko said. “Well, what have you found for starters?”
Sae turned back to her laptop. “I was looking through the list of victims of the mental shutdown attacks, and I found one where a rather powerful person benefited from the attack. I continued looking, and found a few more.”
“I see,” Riko replied.
“I think if I keep searching, I’ll find more,” Sae said. “But investigating them will be tricky. Like I said, they’re powerful. And if I come at them with only a fraction of evidence, things could get messier here than they already are. But I feel like I’m heading in the right direction.” She looked back up at Riko. “What do you think I should do?”
Riko looked back at her. “That does sound a little tough.” She thought about it. “I agree that pursuing this thread when there’s so little of it is a high risk.” Sae nodded. “But sometimes you have to go all in on something to make it count. This situation especially, considering the nature of it.”
“So, you’re saying I should go for it?” Sae said.
“It’s either that, or do nothing,” Riko said. “And personally, I’d rather do something.”
Sae nodded. “I see. Thank you.”
Riko stood up and nodded. “Thank you for asking me.” She started heading out.
“Hey,” Sae called. Riko turned back. “I’d prefer it if you just called me Sae.”
Riko was stunned. “Oh no, I couldn’t do that Miss Niijima.”
“I’ve been calling you Riko,” Sae countered.
“Well…that’s…” Riko said, nervously. “I mean, you’re my boss.”
“Hm,” Sae grunted. “Well, if it’s too hard for you, then you can call me Miss Niijima in front of company. But I’d prefer you to address me as Sae when it’s just the two of us.”
Riko bowed. “Thank you Miss…I mean, Sae.” She became a little more flustered.
“Hm,” Sae smiled. “Thank you.” Riko went back to her desk. Sae continued her research.
Renn, Ann, and Morgana arrived at Leblanc. “Finally,” Ryuji said.
“We didn’t keep you that long, did we?” Ann asked.
“Nah,” Morgana said, popping out. “Ryuji’s just impatient.”
Ryuji growled. “Grrr. You little…”
“Um, let’s just get down to brass tacks,” Makoto said, trying to reign everything in. “So, let’s go over what we know.”
“We know Futaba’s mother was involved in the research into cognitive psience,” Yusuke said.
“And we know someone stole it,” Jose continued.
“And they killed Futaba’s mother to do it…” Sumire said.
“And I’m gonna make that bastard PAY!” Futaba said, slamming her fist on the table.
“Eh heh heh,” Makoto laughed nervously. “While I admire your enthusiasm, let’s keep things calm for now.”
“Sorry,” Futaba apologized.
“Don’t worry,” Ren said. “Makoto got pretty worked up herself when she first joined.”
“Really?!” Futaba said.
“That’s…” Makoto said. “...I did it in the right context.” Ren chuckled. “Shut it!”
“Sorry,” Ren said, not really sorry.
“Mmmm,” Makoto pouted. “Anyway, let’s continue.” Everyone nodded.
“So, whoever has the cognitive psience data is using it to trigger the mental shutdowns we’ve been hearing about so much,” Morgana summarized.
“But we don’t know who that could be,” Ryuji said. “And finding a lead is like finding a needle in a haystack.”
“We need something to give us the edge,” Ann said. “But what?”
They all gave it some thought. “Wait!” Ryuji called out. “Makoto, isn’t your sis like a prosecutor or something?”
Makoto sighed. “Yeah.”
“Right,” Lena said. “She’s working on the Phantom Thieves case, isn’t she? She might have some information that we don’t.”
“Yeah,” Makoto answered.
“Do you think we can get anything out of her though?” Morgana asked. “I doubt she’d be willing to spill any kind of secrets with you.”
“You’re right on that front,” Makoto said.
“Heh heh heh,” Futaba chuckled. “Does she have a computer?”
Makoto was stunned. “Well…she does have a laptop from work she brings home from time to time. Why do you ask?”
Futaba placed a flash drive on the table. “This contains the Futaba special. Just plug it it, and I can extract all of the data from it!”
“Uh, w-won’t she notice?” Makoto asked.
Futaba shook her head “She won’t notice a thing.”
“Hmmmm,” Makoto pouted. “I kind of hate to do this…” She picked it up. “But I don’t have much of a choice. I mean, whoever stole your mom’s research is doing monstrous things. And we’re the only people who can truly stop them!”
“That’s the spirit!” Ren said.
“Heh heh,” Futaba chuckled. “I like it when you get excited.”
“So, when can we expect the data?” Ryuji asked.
“Oh,” Makoto said, deflating. “Well, she doesn’t bring it with her every night.”
“Oh,” Ryuji replied.
“But with things heating up, I imagine it’ll happen sooner rather than later.”
“Well, if it’s before the 6th, I suggest that once you give us the data, we head into Mementos as well,” Ren said.
“Good idea,” Ann said. “It can also show that we’re still doing stuff after defeating Medjed.”
“Um, if it doesn’t happen before the 6th, you can go on without me,” Sumire said.
“Nah, we’re a team,” Ryuji said.
“Ryuji’s right,” Morgana added. “We’re all in this together.”
Sumire smiled. “Thanks guys.”
“Besides, we only leave a day later anyway,” Lena said. “But we wouldn’t do it without you.’
“Hm hm, thanks Lena,” Sumire said.
“Well, I imagine that this is as far as we’ll get for now,” Yusuke said.
“True,” Ren replied. “But we seem to have a plan going.”
“True,” Yusuke responded.
“Plus, I think with the information we get, we’ll be this much closer to our goal,” Jose pointed out.
“Also true,” Yusuke agreed.
“However!” Makoto interjected. “We also need to watch out for Eris.”
“Right…” Ryuji said.
“With most of us gone, she could strike,” Ann said. “And that would be unpleasant.”
“That’s putting it lightly,” Morgana said.
There was an air of despair in the room. Ren clenched her fist. “Well… We’re doing all that we can! I’m sure whatever Eris throws at us, we can handle it.” Everyone cheered up.
Morgana nodded. “Right! Well-put!”
“Well, should we get out of here then?” Yusuke wondered.
“Unless you want something to eat,” Ren said.
“Always,” Yusuke said.
“I dunno,” Jose said. “I feel like we’ve taken advantage of Boss as it is.”
“Well, we’ll just pay for our meals today,” Makoto offered.
Ryuji sighed. “There’s the honor’s student for ya.”
“Alas…my poor wallet,” Yusuke said.
“We’ll cover for you,” Ann said.
“Why thank you,” Yusuke said.
“Alright,” Ren said. “Just tell me what you want.” They gave their orders to Ren. “Alright. I’ll whip it up in a jiff. But first, I gotta go change.” She went upstairs. She came down a few minutes later wearing some casual clothes and an apron. She headed over and began cooking.
“You know, I’m surprised Boss hasn’t shown up,” Ryuji remarked.
“I kind of am too,” Futaba said. She checked her phone. “He’s still out and about.”
“Huh,” Ryuji said. “I wonder what he’s doing.”
Sojiro had just arrived at the diner on Central street. He had spent all day looking at possible schools for Futaba. He would have been returning by now, but he had an unexpected detour. He took a seat, and placed an order for himself.
A few minutes later, Coach Hiraguchi entered. Sojiro spotted her and waved her down. She noticed and stopped by. She looked at the drink he had. “A soda? No offense, but I thought of you as more of a coffee person.”
“Well,” Sojiro began. “I am. But I’m very particular about coffee. I don’t really trust it unless I brew it myself.”
“I see,” Hiraguchi said. She sat down.
“Do you want anything?” Sojiro asked.
“I might grab a water,” Hiraguchi said.
“I see,” Sojiro said. “You know the food here is pretty good. It would be rude not to try some.”
“I’ll think about it,” Hiraguchi said. “Now, let’s discuss Shujin.”
“And here you go,” the waitress said, setting down a big plate of fries.
Sojiro and Hiraguchi stared at each other. “I’ve been out all day. I’ve gotten pretty hungry. But if you want, I’m willing to share.”
“I see,” Hiraguchi said. She turned to the waitress. “I’ll have a glass of water.”
“Certainly!” she said. “That’ll be right up.” She left to get Hiraguchi’s water.
Hiraguchi grabbed one of the fries and ate it. Sojiro gave her a look. “I’m a bit peckish too.” Sojiro nodded.
“And here you are,” the waitress said, giving Hiraguchi her water.
“Thank you,” Hiraguchi said. The waitress left. She took a sip of her water. “Now, the reason why we’re here.”
“Right,” Sojiro said. He ate some of his fries. “So, what do you think of Shujin?”
Hiraguchi waited for a moment. “I think it’s a pretty solid school. I mean, it has its flaws, but so does every school.”
“True,” Sojiro said. “I’ve been to my fair share of schools today, and they all had their strengths and weaknesses. But my biggest concern with Shujin is the Principal.”
“Right…” Hiraguchi said. “I can’t say I was there during Kamoshida’s tenure, but he does have a certain air about him. It feels like he respects power and power alone.”
“Well letting that Kamoshida guy do as he pleases because he was an Olympian certainly proves that,” Sojiro said, eating some more fries.
Hiraguchi took another fry. “I see you’re quite clever.”
“My old job called for it,” Sojiro said.
Hiraguchi nodded. “Still, I feel like most of the teaching staff are decent. There is one person who’s a little on edge, but even he’s not terrible. I feel like it’s the administrative side that’s the issue.”
“Well, that’s a big issue,” Sojiro said. “Certainly not one I can overlook.”
Hiraguchi nodded. “I understand.” She ate some more fries, and then finished off her water. “Well, I guess that’s that.” She stood up. “If you change your mind, I wouldn’t mind having her as a student.” She started to leave.
Sojiro was confused. “Wait!” He called out. Hiraguchi turned back to him. “Um, well, while our discussion about Shujin may be done, I was hoping that, if you were interested, we could turn this into a casual affair.”
Hiraguchi paused for a moment. She got into Sojiro’s face, and said “I don’t DO casual affairs.” Sojiro was surprised. “When it comes to romance, much like everything I do, I play to win.” She backed off. “And until you want to play to win, I won’t be interested.” She started to leave. “But you have my number once you do.” She left fully.
Sojiro watched as she left the diner. He ate some more of his fries. He sighed. “Should have known that wouldn’t have been easy.”
Meanwhile, the girl in the gardening club entered the door of a spectacular mansion. She was greeted by the staff as she came in. She headed to the living room where she was greeted by the sound of two men laughing. A young man in a white tuxedo noticed her first. “Ah, Haru, how nice of you to join us.”
An older man in a black suit turned to her. “Oh, Haru,” he said. “I didn’t hear you come in.”
Haru nodded. “I just got back now, father.”
“What’s keeping you so late?” her father asked.
“I just had some club activities,” Haru answered.
“I’m sure you could have ignored them,” her dad said. “It feels like I’ve been seeing less and less of you as of late.”
The feeling is mutual… “Um, it’s fine. I enjoy helping out.”
“Hm,” her father said. “Well, I don’t mind it so much. But once you start living at his house…”
“Oh, I don’t mind at all,” the young man said. “She’s so kind and generous. I quite like that about her.”
“Well that’s good to hear,” Haru’s father replied. “See? It won’t be much of a difference.”
“I see…” Haru said.
“We were just discussing some of the details,” Haru’s father said.
“I was hoping to do this as soon as possible,” the man said. “But your father, well, he can’t bear to see you go. Not that I blame him.”
“Right…” Haru said.
“But it’s not like we won’t visit often,” the man said.
“I know, I know,” Haru’s dad said. “I just find it hard to part with my only child.”
“Right,” the man said.
“Um, if it’s alright, I’d like to go to my room,” Haru said. “I’ve got some homework I need to do.”
“Why don’t you save it for after dinner?” Haru’s dad asked. “I have the chefs making something just simply exquisite for our guest.”
“Oh, Mr. Okumura, you shouldn’t have,” the man said.
He really shouldn’t.
“Well, only the best for my future son-in-law,” Mr. Okumura said. He turned to Haru. “While we wait for the chefs to be finished, why don’t you tell us about your day?”
Haru nodded. “Very well…” Haru proceeded to talk about her day with the two men she was supposed to feel close to, and then had dinner with them. Once dinner was over, she returned to her room. She resigned herself to her sorrow.
Sae was preparing to leave for the day. She finished her notes up for the time being, and then powered down her laptop. She closed it, and walked out of her office. Once she left, she was surprised to see Riko still there. She was surprised. “I thought you would have gone home already.”
“Well, I am your secretary,” Riko said. “I don’t leave until you leave.”
“Are you sure about that?” Sae said. “I tend to pull some really long nights. Sometimes, I don’t even go home.”
“Well, that is a little extreme,” Riko said. “But I don’t mind. If today’s any indication I think I’m going to enjoy working here.”
Sae smiled. “Well, it looks like your coworkers were right about you.”
Riko panicked. “What did they say?!” she asked, nervously.
Sae was surprised. “Um, the director told me that everyone he spoke to said you were kind, efficient, and very organized. That you were the perfect fit for the job.”
“Oh,” Riko said, relaxing herself. “Well, eh heh, truth be told, they were probably saying that to get me to leave.” Sae was shocked. “No one else at the court liked me all too much.”
“Why not?” Sae demanded.
“Well, I guess, I was just different,” Riko said. “I was just ostracized from the group. That’s part of the reason I don’t mind staying over. Because I have no real friends. Or really, anyone who’s expecting me…”
Sae furrowed her brow. “Well, even if it was said to get you out of the picture, I still believe it to be true.”
Riko was a little surprised. “Really?”
Sae nodded. “You’ve been such a great help to me today. And with the chaos of both what’s happening in this office, and with the cases I’m working on, I could use someone like you.”
Riko cheered up. “Eh heh. Thanks.”
Sae nodded once more. “Well, we should get going. See you tomorrow.”
Riko nodded. “Good night Miss… Sae.” Sae smiled. The two of them then left the building.
Sae arrived at her home soon after. “Sis?!” Makoto said upon seeing her home. “I…didn’t expect you home so soon.”
“Hm,” Sae replied. “Well, things are heating up at the office. I might not be home now and then for the foreseeable future.”
“Right,” Makoto said.
“You’ll be fine, right?” Sae asked.
“Huh?” Makoto said. “Of course.
Sae smiled. “Right. I presume dinner is in the fridge?”
Makoto nodded. “That’s right.”
“Thanks,” Sae said. She went to get her dinner. Of course Makoto would be fine without me. She’s always been the stronger of the two of us. But I know what this society does to powerful women. I know Makoto is strong, but… Well, it’s not like she’ll have to face that kind of discrimination. Once I’m through overhauling the system, Makoto can spread her wings and be as free as she wants to.
Sae sat down and began eating her dinner. “Um, sis?” Makoto asked.
“Yes?” Sae replied.
“Did something happen today?” Makoto asked. Sae was confused. “It’s just, you seem a little different.”
“Hm,” Sae replied. “Well, I don’t know if you heard, but the current government dissolved.”
“Right…” Makoto said.
“My office is going to get really busy,” Sae said.
“Are they giving you more work?” Makoto inquired.
Sae shook her head. “I’m working some of the biggest cases already. They understand adding more to my plate would distract from that.”
“I see,” Makoto said.
“However,” Sae continued, “they did give me a secretary.”
“Oh?” Makoto said, intrigued. “And how is that going?”
“It’s actually going quite well,” Sae answered. “She’s the perfect fit for the job.”
“Huh,” Makoto said. “She sounds lovely.”
Sae smiled. “She is.”
“Well, I hope you two continue to get along,” Makoto said.
“I hope so too,” Sae said. She finished her dinner.
A little later, after she finished getting ready for bed, Sae laid down on her bed and continued to think some more. Riko is such a kind and caring person. To think she was just expelled like that because other people didn’t like her… Well, I guess I need to fight for people like her too. “Hm,” she chuckled to herself. “Just another reason to close this case.”
Meanwhile, Ren was getting ready for bed herself. Once she put on her shirt she wears to bed, she heard Eris say “Turning in for the night?”
Ren turned to meet her. “Did you come in here to watch me change?”
“No, of course not,” Eris said. “I may be a lot of things, but I’m not some Peeping Tom.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised,” Ren snapped back.
“Aw, come on,” Eris said. “How awful do you think I am?”
“Do you really want me to answer that?” Ren asked. Eris laughed playfully, ignoring Ren’s response. “What do you want anyway?”
“I’m just coming to check in on you,” Eris answered. “You and your little team are hoping to get closer to finding the fiends abusing the metaverse, right? I want to have front row seats to that match.”
“You can,” Ren said. “If you don’t mind looking up six feet.”
“Oooo, feisty!” Eris replied. She chuckled some more. “But do you really think you can take me on before you deal with your enemies from this side?”
“We’ll see,” Ren said.
“You know you’d miss me,” Eris teased.
“Not really,” Ren responded.
“He he,” Eris chuckled some more. “Well,” Eris propped Ren’s chin on her finger, “as much as I enjoy our little back and forth, I have something else I need to share.”
Ren pushed Eris’s hand off of her. “What is it?”
“You don’t need to worry about me doing anything while you’re on your little vacation,” Eris told her.
Ren was surprised. “Why not?”
“Well, there are a few reasons,” Eris answered. “First off, the perfect candidate won’t be ready until afterward anyway. But more importantly, I’m doing all of this to test you. Why, if you weren’t here, where would the fun in that be? I can break most people because they are weak. But breaking you? THAT’S what I want.”
Ren grew serious. “People are stronger than you think.”
“You keep telling yourself that,” Eris said.
“And you keep telling yourself that I’ll join you some day,” Ren retorted.
“Aw, come on,” Eris said. “As much as I like sassy Ren, I want to see friendly Ren.”
“You’d have to be my friend to see that,” Ren shot back.
“Aw, I get it,” Eris said. “You’re not ready. But when you will be, I’ll be there. Besides, I can enjoy friendly Ren from a distance.”
“Whatever,” Ren said.
“You know, I’ve been helping you a lot,” Eris said.
“So?” Ren replied. “I don’t owe you anything.”
“Hm,” Eris said. “Well, sooner or later, I’m sure we’ll get along just peachy. But I guess our little game of cat and mouse will just have to suffice.”
“Trust me, I can’t wait until it’s over either,” Ren retorted.
“Well, let’s take this one day at a time,” Eris said. “Let’s see if you’re ready for the next stage in this game. I’ve got something really good here.”
“Bring it,” Ren said.
“You’ll have to wait,” Eris reminded her. “But I can assure you, it’ll be a doozy.”
Hunger-Eris: Rank 6
Eris disappeared. Ren, feeling the strain for that conversation, and the day in general, got under her covers. Morgana heard that. He turned and jumped down on the bed. “How come you didn’t tell me you were done changing?” he asked.
Ren sighed. “I’m too exhausted now. I’ll tell you in the morning.”
“Well, alright then, “ Morgana said. “Good night.”
“Good night,” Ren replied. The two of them fell asleep.
