What's your favorite cryptide? Attach a picture if you can/@i-send-you-random-asks
Oooo, this is a really fun one! My favorite cryptid is called the "Manananggal". The name is derived from the word "tanggal" which means "to separate" because of its ability to detach itself from its lower half at night

My mom has this awful friend, Cynthia. My loathing goes deep enough that I’m not even going to change her name. If she ever finds this she knows what she did.
On multiple occasions my mom asked this horrible irresponsible chicken brained woman to watch after our animals while we were away. I don’t know why once wasn’t enough, because the first failure was so spectacular that anyone in their right mind would know she couldn’t be trusted with any level of responsibility or direction following.
You might be thinking to yourself, FFS, this level of antipathy is surely unwarranted! But you’d be wrong.
To set the scene, we were living in downstairs of our house when I was about fifteen. My mom has always wanted more animals than can reasonably be kept indoors which is how we ended up with three cats. When she wanted to kick them all outside I protested, and so all three cats lived in my bedroom with no access to the rest of the house.
That really wasn’t great, so in an attempt to give them options we made a window cutout with a cat door in it to give them access to the outdoors. Looking back on this as an environmentally conscious adult it’s wretched, cats should be indoor only, but at the time I was desperate to give them some freedom because one bedroom is too small for three cats.
So my parents and I went on a week long trip to visit family out of state. We told Cynthia to come feed and water the cats, and to scoop the litter box. Most importantly, don’t lock the handle of the door, because we only have the key to the deadbolt.
I’m sure you can see where this is going.
Cynthia locked us out. We arrived home after 12 hours on the road, desperate for the comfort of our own beds. We were met with an unyielding door. With a sigh I volunteered, “I can punch in the cat door and climb in the window.”
I slipped behind the bamboo outside my window and pushed in the cutout. A horrible insidious reek wafted out at me. I paused, prickling with foreboding. But I had a job to do, and by god I’d see it through. I hefted myself up into the window and my hand immediately landed in something wet.
Skin crawling, I pulled myself up and surveyed the darkened room as a miserable odor of decay and suffering poured out of the room around me. I could see dark shapes littering the carpet and it didn’t take a genius to guess that the cats had taken up hunting in a big way during my absence.
I pulled my hand out of the pile of vomit it had landed in and dropped into my onetime bedroom turned now into a hellpit of decomposing wretchedness. I turned on the light. I wished I had not turned on the light.
My eyes scanned across the floor, tallying as they went. Two dead birds, a dead baby rabbit, five dead mice, and one dead snake. I paused on my alarm clock, perplexed to see a stain of white on it. I stepped closer and saw a furtive movement.
The tally suddenly contained also: one live bird that had shit in several places, probably in pure terror to find itself trapped in a room littered with decomposing woodland creatures, which honestly, fair. I coaxed it out the window and finished the survey with five discrete piles of vomit.
I unlocked the door and let my parents in. They exclaimed in disgust at the horrible smell. We stood together in my doorway floored by the magnitude of neglect. The unscooped litter box was a subtle footnote in the tangible reek my living space. I disposed of the parade of ecological disaster, cleaned vomit, and scooped the box after a brutally long day on the road. The cats were fine, and happy to see me. They had a huge dish or food and water so Cynthia’s neglect at least hadn’t harmed them.
Then I slept on the couch while my bedroom aired out, the windows flung wide to dispel the uneasy ghosts of the hunted. I spent the whole night cursing Cynthia’s name for this evil she’d visited upon me. When my mom asked her, "Cynthia, didn't you see the dead animals?"
Cynthia responded, "Yes, they smelled so bad, I just ran in and out as fast as I could." I fully don't believe she did any caretaking, and I'm personally of the opinion that she locked herself out on the first day and never came back.
The next day my room had returned to a habitable level of smellscape and I gratefully crawled into my bed that night. I stretched out and froze as my foot brushed something cold and wet?
The final indignity: one last dead snake, inside my very sheets.
Fucking Cynthia.

I need people who are saying that caitlyn would not miss the shot to understand that yeah, we know she would not miss jinx, she would not miss Isha either BECAUSE THE KID WAS USING HERSELF AS A HUMAN SHIELD AND THEY MADE SURE WE SAW JINX'S HEAD WAS ALIGNED WITH HERS... caitlyn was going to shoot, she was not going to miss and we would have 2 dead kids instead of just one (because people forget jinx is around 17-18yo according to them)
I love caitlyn, but she WAS going to kill Isha as a consequence and vi knew it

Ghosts’ Larry Rickard Explains Why They Chose the Captain’s First Name
Tumblr media
Photo: Monumental,Guido Mandozzi
It couldn’t be a joke. That was one rule laid down by the Ghosts creators when it came to choosing a first name for Willbond’s character. Until series five, the WWII ghost had been known only as The Captain – a mystery seized upon by fans of the show.
“It was the question we got asked more than anything. His name,” actor and writer Larry Rickard tells Den of Geek. “Once we got to series three, you could see that we were deliberately cutting away and deliberately avoiding it. We were fuelling the fire because we knew at some point we’d tell them.”
In “Carpe Diem”, the episode written by Rickard and Ben Willbond that finally reveals The Captain’s death story, they did tell us. After years of guessing, clue-spotting and debate, Ghosts revealed that The Captain’s first name is James. At the same time, we also learned that James’ colleague Lieutenant Havers’ first name was Anthony.
The ordinariness of those two names, says Rickard, is the point.
“The only thing we were really clear about is that we didn’t want one of those names that only exists in tellyland. It shouldn’t be ‘Cormoran’ or ‘Endeavour’. They should just be some men’s names and they’re important to them. The point was that they were everyday.”
Choosing first names for The Captain and Havers was a long process not unlike naming a baby, Rickard agrees. “It almost comes down to looking at the faces of the characters and saying, what’s right?”
“We talked for ages. For a long time I kept thinking ‘Duncan and James’, and then I was like ah no! That would have turned it into a gag and been awful!” Inescapably in the minds of a certain generation, Duncan James is a member of noughties boyband Blue. “Maybe with Anthony I was thinking of Anthony Costa!” Rickard says in mock horror, referencing another member of the band.
Lieutenant Havers wasn’t just The Captain’s second in command while stationed at Button House; he was also the man James loved. Because homosexuality was criminalised in England during James’ lifetime, he was forced to hide his feelings for Anthony from society, and to some extent even from himself.
In “Carpe Diem”, the ghosts (mistakenly) prepare for the last day of their afterlives, prompting The Captain to finally tell his story. Though not explicit about his sexual identity, the others understand and accept what he tells them – and led by Lady Button, all agree that he’s a brave man.
Getting the balance right of what The Captain does and doesn’t say was key to the episode. “It wasn’t just a personal choice of his to go ‘I’m going to remain in the closet’,” explains Rickard. “There wasn’t an option there to explore the things that either of them felt. That couldn’t be done back then – there are so many stories which have come out since the War about the dangers of doing that.
“We wanted to tell his personal story but also try to ensure that there was a level at which you understood why they couldn’t be open, that even in this moment where he’s finally telling the other ghosts his story, he never comes out and says it overtly because that would be too much for him as a character from that time.
“He says enough for them to know, and enough for him to feel unburdened but it’s in the fact that they’re using their first names which militarily they would never have done, and in the literal passing of the baton”.
The baton is a bonus reveal when fans learned that The Captain’s military stick wasn’t a memento of his career, but of Havers. As James suffers a fatal heart attack during a VE day celebration at Button House, Anthony rushes to his side and the stick passes from one to the other as they share a moment of tragic understanding.
“From really early on, we had the idea that anything you’re holding [when you die] stays with you. So it wasn’t just your clothes you were wearing, we had the stuff with Thomas’ letter reappearing in his pocket and so on. And the assumption being that it was something The Captain couldn’t put down, it felt so nice to be able to say it was something he didn’t want to put down.”
Rickard lists “Carpe Diem”, co-written with Ben Willbond, among his series five highlights. He’s pleased with the end result, praises Willbond’s performance, and loved being on set to see Button House dressed for the 1940s. He’s particularly pleased that a checklist of moments they wanted to land with the audience all managed to be included. “Normally something’s fallen by the wayside just because of the way TV’s made, it’s always imperfect or it’s slightly rushed, but it feels like it’s all there.”
Rickard and Willbond also knew by this point in the show’s lifetime, that they could trust Ghosts fans to pick up on small details. “Nothing is missed,” he says. “Early on, you’re always thinking, is that going to get across? But once we got to series five, there are little tiny things within corners of shots and you know that’s going to be spotted. Particularly in that very short exchange between Havers and the Captain. We worried less about the minutiae of it because you go, that’s going to be rewound and rewatched, nothing will be missed.”
The team were also grateful they’d resisted the temptation to tell The Captain’s story sooner. “We’d talked about it every series since series two, whether or not now was the time, but because he’s such a hard and starchy character in a lot of ways you needed the time to understand his softer side I think before you had that final honest beat from him.”
“What a ridiculously normal name to have so much weight put on it for five years,” laughs Rickard fondly. “Good old James.”

Asking someone to eat your body so they and the people they are responsible for don't starve to death in the barren wilderness is probably one of the most romantic things I can think of superseded only by Crozier refusing to do it and also insisting Fitzjames be buried well enough that the others can't dig him up if they find him.

[neverafter episode 9 spoilers]
everything about ylfa's flashback scene made me feel fucking insane. the wolf is death and the ending of stories. the wolf ate ylfa's grandmother because it was time for her story to end. but for whatever reason it's not time for ylfa's end. for whatever reason the wolf wanted ylfa to live. the wolf ate the grandmother so that she could die, and ylfa ate the wolf so that she could live. the wolf wanted ylfa to live, and at the deepest core of herself she wants to live too. i'm scratching at the WALLS. LIKE "i met death and death wants me to live" EMILY SAID IT SO CASUALLY BUT LOWKEY THAT'S THE RAWEST SHIT I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE!
also though you need to eat to live and the consumption of stories to stay alive beyond the end of your own story... i am Thinking...

THE SHERIFF AND GUY OF GISBORNE
uh. try to stay with me for a second. so incest motifs are a huge part of medieval lit. you see it in arthuriana cycles, you see it in romances, it's a whole thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Incest and the Medieval Imagination, Elizabeth Archibald
so robin hood. both adaptions and the text itself, tend to get interesting with guy of gisborne. and I will say that while I found the media being discussed in this text absolutely fucking insufferable to watch, the discussion on it was delicious, impeccable, show stopping
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mouvance, Greenwood, and Gender in The Adventures of Robin Hood and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Brian J Levy and Lesley Coote
and with regards to discussions on the origin text (which I love and adore forever)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Horseplay: Robin Hood, Guy of Gisborne, and the Neg(oti)ation of the Bestial, Stuart Kane
we're. getting to the point, I promise. guy of gisborne and the sheriff in my own "adaption" are not cousins, but brothers in law (fucked up brothers in law are my thing over on my other blog. brutus and cassius? I'm there. caligula and lepidus? all over that, baby!) because I'm aiming for an adjacent transgression.
on the topic of adjacent transgressions and guy's comment in this comic about cannibalism: there's an overlap in various genres of literature, predominantly in branches of horror and tragedy: between cannibalism and incest. (additionally! a lot of texts will take on christian subtexts and allusions, so there's a bonus homoerotic cannibalism discussion happening wrt communion that I'll get into in the future) it's about. chomping. the teeth, you know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Managing Monsters, Marina Warner

Statius and Virgil: The Thebaid and the Reinterpretation of the Aeneid, Randall T. Ganiban
there's a 100% chance I will revise the sheriff's design at some point, but I wanted to draw the flowers exploding out of the spine so bad
AND FINALLY, the neck focus on guy is half due to his fate in his origin tale (beheaded) and half my own invention: I girl-with-a-green-ribboned him. a little narrative necromancy, if you will.

tbh i just love the trope so imagine a scenario where in order to stop the boys from defeating them a villain turns one against the other effectively possessing them whether literally or by a spell and they choose charles whos got all this pent up rage and fear of it
So they have charles turn into his worse fear someone who brings nothing but pain eyes whited over as edwin and crystal try to approach him to ask if hes okay only for charles to quickly turn trying to get a hit with his bat at one of them edwin pulling crystal barely out of the way both looking shocked every step they take back charles takes forward the need to get to whoever to break the spell or totem or whatever so edwin whispers a plan to crystal hell take charles on if anything charles cannot cause real harm to him as he can crystal so crystal runs one way charles turns to follow before edwin calls his name snapping charle back to him and as much as it will pain them both in the end edwin straightens and laces his voice with as much condensation and acids he can making remarks and calling charles names
till charles is chasing after him through halls and walls missing swings as edwin dodges or turns a corner faster and breaking whatever his bat lands on but its charles a part of him knows edwin and soon its turn against him hes able to cut edwin of and hit him with a blow so hard its like getting struck by lighting all consuming bright light and sesring pain as edwin is flung back through three walls
this goes on for a bit edwin taking quit the beating at the hands of charles who in some ways seems like hes enjoying it edwin whos hair has become ruffled and clothes a bit torn is glad for his high pain tolerance which someone lets him still spit cruel words to keep charles on him hes not even sure if crystal is close to winning
its only when hes thrown over another table landing on his back even if they literally cant he still feels the pain of broken ribs shards travel through his veins like shards of glass it doesnt help when charles stomps on foor down hard on it pinning him to the ground anxiety creeps up and edwins aware of the feeling prey whos been caught and the torture that follows he doesnt know to beg for charles to come to or play his role if he doesnt what happens to crystal charles would never forgive himself of he did anything to her but edwin cant help but feel fear hes been here before if not charles then some other demon ghoul or witch all leading to worse terrors so all he can do is whimper out a plea for what hes not sure
As charles flourishes his bat having the blunt end land just above edwins throat edwin cant help but grip into charles leg holding him hes not even trying to push him off pathetically trying to seek comfort from his friend in any way he can shaking hands and fingers digging in so tight if they were alive he sure charles would bleed hes not sure what will happen if charles does decapitated him he won't die but there are worse things like experiencing the pain of a blunt object being the thing use it wont be a clean cut to if hell be able to put his head back on carrying it around is not ideal all thoughts running through his head as charles raises the bat as high as he can breathing heavily bringing his weapon down fast and all edwin can think to yelp is charles name eyes squeezed shut
but no pain comes charles is still above him the pressure on his chest never letting up so edwin slowly opens his eyes charles bat resting centimeters his neck frozen in place following the length of it he finally meets charles eyes and they are still whited out but they are different something is they are flickering like hes looking for something and then suddenly tears are welling and spilling over and edwin cant stop himself from realsing his grip on charles leg to reach up an to grab charles sleeves still gripping the handle letting him know its okay its alright hes here he cant help but jump at the gasp charles lets out as he seems to come back to himself stumbling back from edwin he cant get a full sentence dropping his bat like it burns breaking down stuck between pulling edwin closer or bolting and edwin decides for both of them pulling charles down and wrapping himself around charles tight and soon they are both gripping eachother with tearful apologizes
