(Southern Vangard) Breeze Brewin - Southern Vangard Radio Interview Sessions
BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the BREEZE BREWIN interview session! Yeah you read it right, Vangardians. Where do you even start - wait, how about this - “HINDSIGHT”, Breeze’s debut solo LP, is finally out everywhere and it’s a BURNER like you knew it would be! Breeze gives us the behind the scenes goods on the making of the album, why now is the right time to drop and the incredible support he’s been getting since released, including from a close friend who just happens to be one of the best MC / producer’s on the planet, the only and only El-P. We also rap about Brewin’s often-looked over prowess behind the boards, what he’s working with technology wise from a production standpoint and when we might see more production work from him in the future. You know we crack open the history books - JUGGAKNOTS, FAT BEATS, PRINCE PAUL, CAMU TAO (RIP), COPYWRITE, J-ZONE, the list goes on and on, you can imagine the stories. However, not to get stuck in the past, we also hear about the newly formed MATIC ENTERTAINMENT and how its roster is remerging in a big way - from CARTA P and RAY FOGES recent albums, QUEEN HERAWIN making serious feature rounds, and oh - how about an Breeze & SEBB BASH project that might just be around the corner? Alright we’ve given y’all enough, it’s time to press play, cop HINDSIGHT today and tell a friend it’s nothing but that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK

Chapter One
"Y'know, you're kinda cute for a cop."
I rolled my eyes. This was the third time she had tried to engage me.
Driving a bus to a Federal prison in the middle of nowhere is pretty boring. Occasionally I get an interesting person. Some extremist or whatever. The sociopaths make the best people to talk to during the 90+ minute drive. Other times I get someone who is crying or in shock. Some people think they're bigger than they are. Some people get caught up in the crowd mentality during a demonstration and think they're one of the people who can go to jail and have it matter. As soon as they get on the bus, they realize their incarceration will be meaningless and they start to panic.
“Why don’t you wanna talk, big boy?”
How did I feel about all of this? I didn’t care. These people meant nothing to me. This was a job I got paid to do and I didn’t question anything as long as the money was coming in. Plus, I didn’t want to end up on the wrong side of this bus.
“Aww, come on. I’m not that intimidating!”
This one was a special case. She came with a special warning: DO NOT COMMUNICATE was written in bold letters on the docket. I hadn’t gotten one of these in a while. I sighed as I read it. It would be a long drive with nothing to entertain me, since that protocol included no music and no talking to people on the phone.
“So whatcha do before you got this jo- OWW!”
Shock collar, automatically included with the protocol. If she got too yappy, I was allowed to use it until she passed out.
She quieted for a bit. This drive was long and I didn’t need it to be harder on both of us. Eventually, she spoke up.
“Alright, I won’t try to talk to you. But can I least just talk aloud? It gives me something to focus on. I’m gonna go mad otherwise.”
I grunt in response. I almost immediately smack my head. I had engaged, even if it was a guttural sound. Not like anyone would know, but I prided myself on professionalism.
She smiled. “Good! Hopefully I’ll entertain you as well.”
She got out of her seat and started walking around the bus. How did she get out of her cuffs, I wondered. No matter. There’s three different locks protecting the door to the cabin. She’d never get through before I shocked her into submission.
“Where do I begin,” she said in her singsong voice. “Hmm, I know! My name is Sunny but my friends call me Sundancer, on a count of my ballet training. Your bosses have said I’m the leader of the revived Weathermen. I admitted to nothing, obviously, but that doesn’t mean anything to the people who put me on this bus. Nice bus, bee tee dub.”
I appreciated that. Again, I prided myself in my work.
“I have the perfect name for that group, huh? Anyway, I should tell you how I ended up here. I was meeting my book club. We were drinking tea and talking about Les Misérables. The original book, not the musical. Did you know that Eponine was way more creepy than the musical makes her out to be? Super obsessed.
“Back to my club. So we were talking about the book, right? When suddenly we were rudely interrupted! Doors kicked open, windows smashed, the whole shebang. It reminded me of the Operation Hammer tactics the LAPD used back in the day. It was pretty scary.
“Anyway! The start yelling contradictory things at us. ‘Ged down!’ ‘Hands up!’ ‘Don’t move!’ ‘Get over there!’ I had no clue what to do! Eventually, they ziptie us and throw us in a van. We couldn’t see anything. Eventually, I get marched out and thrown on your bus. Just like that, no trial or judges or anything. No clue what happen to my other book club members”
That sounded wrong. Even with the new regime, we still had due process.
She’s trying to trick me, I thought. I’d pushed the doubt out of my mind.
“Have you ever questioned the government? Like, really questioned how we got here.”
No, I thought.
“Isn’t it funny? It was just one or two loonies in low-level positions at first. When the first one got into Congress, a lot of people laughed. But he was popular. He was insane, but his mannerisms earned him a lot of support. Eventually, his buddy also gets elected. And then their buddy. Soon they got enough sway in Congress to start pushing their plans. No one questioned their intentions, since they were so popular. Promises of a brave new world and all that jazz. People really ate that shit up. As soon as that first guy ran for President, the rational people thought he’d never get in! History proved us wrong, though. Soon as he got in, him and his buddies started pushing through whatever they wanted. He was so popular that the outspoken eventually got voted out of office. Eventually those of us who opposed him were forced to become quiet to avoid getting yelled at.
“One law went too far, though. They wanted to make all the papers state-run to “ensure they avoided the corruption of big corporations.” A lot of us weren’t ok with that. Freedom Of The Press, after all. So a bunch of people got together to peacefully protest the law. I was there, too! So was my brother. It was peaceful at first, but then the cops showed up. They looked like stormtroopers. The Nazis, not the Star Wars characters. The crowd got really restless as they surrounded us. Then they started firing at us! A lot of people died, including my brother. The papers said the next day that we got violent and instigated it, but they lied! Y’know what I saw they they didn’t want me to see? I saw some cops violently kill some other cops. Those pictures were all over the papers. We couldn’t get people to believe us that they faked it.”
That… was concerning. I remember those pictures. Something seemed off about them.
“After that, the government declared protesters enemy of the state. They started cracking down on the protests. Suddenly anyone speaking out got arrested for domestic terrorism! Pretty crazy, huh?”
She was bluffing. I’ve heard some crazy things in the past from criminals. Lies were the least of them. But this… was getting to me. I disagreed with the violent crackdowns, but I was a small fish in a big pond. I didn’t want to risk going to jail.
“Apparently the reason the regime got so popular so quickly was blackmail! They made a bunch of people vote for them. It was an odd coincidence that the districts they won were the most violent in the country. As soon as they got in, the violence in their territory almost immediately stopped! Crazy, huh?”
She was right. Shit, she was right. This had to be wrong. It had to be.
“Have you ever questioned the government? Like, really questioned them. I just wanted to know why my brother had to die, y’know? He was my best friend and he died so needlessly. I joined the book club to make it hurt less. They helped me understand what happened. I saw a lot of the hit-and-run attacks on the government. I didn’t take part in them, obviously, but I saw all of them! I liked to travel and it was an odd coincidence that violence seemed to follow.”
Ok, she was under my skin for sure. God help me, I supported these people. She was a criminal, sure, but her story makes my bosses seem like worse people.
“Why haven’t you stood up? Have you ever done it? Questioned your boss and all that jazz. I bet you haven’t. You letting me talk was probably the most extreme thing you’ve done in a while!”
She was right, of course.
“I don’t know if any of this influenced you or not. But I’d like someone to hear my story before I disappear. You know they’re going to disappear me.”
“... They are.”
The words hung in the air like a hangman's noose before a crowd. She got me to say something. No wonder they wanted me to not communicate with this kid. She was going to disappear. At least if she died in public, her death might mean something to someone.
I didn’t speak for a long time. Neither of us did. We were about half an hour from the prison.
“I don’t want to go to jail,” she said softly. I noticed an overwhelming tone of fear in her voice. “I want to go home and hug my mom and play with my cat. If I’m going to die, I want to say goodbye first and die fighting for something. Not in a place where no one will know. I guess you’re my legacy, huh. Well, thank you for listening.”
As soon as she said that, I swerved off the road. Our bus crashed, turning over and over as we hit the field. She saw what I was doing an instant before I did it and managed to brace herself for the crash. I don’t think either of us anticipated the crash being this violent, though.
Once we stopped, I waited for a few moments before I got up. The locks had emergency openings from my side, so I busted through them to reach Sunny. She was banged up, but nothing serious.
“Wha… what the hell was that for?”
I picked her up and carried her out of the bus. Once we were clear, I set her down. She got up and eyed me suspiciously.
“Why’d you do that?” She breathing heavily when she said that.
“I don’t think you’re telling the whole truth, but you shouldn’t be going to prison without being convicted.” The lie was for my sake more than hers. If she was right, I wasn’t going to let the leader of the only group that could do something wind up in a body bag in the desert.
“Uh huh,” she said after managing to collect herself. “So what are we going to do now?”
“You tell me, kid. This is your story, after all.”
“You got a phone? One that isn’t government issues.”
“Yeah. Make your calls. Let’s get out of here.”
She made her call as we started walking towards the nearest town. Neither of us were in a talkative mood, especially after I essentially committed political suicide.
“We’ll be picked up soon,” She finally said. “I didn’t catch your name.”
“I never gave it,” I responded simply, “But you can call me Butch."
