A long time ago, I was having writing block and I decided I was going to try an exercise of putting together two genres of things I really liked and wanted to write and see what I could make out of them.
One of the phrases I ended up with was "Arthurian Noir".
I liked that idea a lot. Arthurian romance and Noir mystery are such different genres, but I felt like there was a spot they were compatible and that was in the person of the disgraced knight. Arthurian knights are supposed to love their queen. It's part of the job description. But that love is supposed to stop at a particular point and if it goes past that, they've put their lives and knighthood in danger. It's the classic Lancelot story. But if it was a noir story, the idea that made sense was for this knight to have been disgraced, sent away, and then called back into the fray - surrounded by people they hated and a queen/lover who had abandoned them. That story, I thought, felt like it could have teeth.
And I thought it was even more compelling if that central relationship was a queer one between a female knight and her queen.
That's how "The Cold Ever After" was born. Sir Noelani Mahi'ai was pulled from her parents and her island to train to be the Holy Champion as a child. She was taken in by the church and trained to be the sword of the king, to do his will and to win any battle. She was shown no love and tenderness, only pain and strength. Until one day she was dispatched to save the woman who would be the queen from terrible danger.
She succeeded. But what no one counted on is the knight and her queen falling in love. She was always by the queen's side, often in her bed, and once the princess was born, the knight helped to raise the princess as if she were her own daughter.
But then things fell apart, she's never been clear how, and the knight was dismissed and sent back to her home. It's been ten years.
Now the queen has come looking for her help again. The princess has gone missing the night before her wedding to a rival king. Now the entire kingdom is in danger of being burned to the ground if the princess is not produced in the next seven days. But not everything in the kingdom is as it seems and if the knight isn't careful, she may lose the only things she has left.
