"Stupid Fucking Bird" show #673
If Anton Chekhov could see Aaron Posner’s Stupid Fucking Bird, a modern adaptation of The Seagull, I think Chekhov would smirk and scratch his head a bit. This off-the-wall dark comedy takes the premise and like names from The Seagull and places them in actress Emma’s lovely home. The love duos, triangles, and other shapes that take form throughout the play culminate with a heavy look into one’s life and how it pertains to creating art. Director Kirsten Brandt has breathed a fresh energy into the relatively new play, allowing for the audience interaction and tenacity of the cast to truly reach a height of theatrical persuasiveness that is palpable from first line to final blackout.
(Jacob Marker (Con) and Sarah Haas (Nina); Photo credit: Taylor Sanders)
Jacob Marker plays Con, the central figure/narrator-of-sorts, who is a troubled playwright attempting to redefine how theatre is created and perceived. The overshadowing pain he feels from being the son of Emma, a renowned actress of the stage, who is dating a pig of a successful author, Trig, causes Con to have a mostly negative, self-deprecating outlook on life. Mr. Marker’s performance of this angst-y young man comes across as strong in emotion and weak in action, a good thing for the volatile Con. His several breakdowns and peaks of joy catapult Mr. Marker’s performance into an all-out intriguing turn. Sarah Haas plays Nina, Con’s one-time girlfriend who loves his art more than him, apparently. Miss Haas brings a wide-eyed, enthusiastically optimistic outlook to Nina’s journey from well-meaning actress to a young seductress of Trig. The arc from innocent young actress to young woman who knows what she wants and how to get it is well-developed and extremely well-paced. Tasi Alabastro is a hilariously passionate Dev, all-around “normal” guy who comments on the actions as they happen. However, Mr. Alabastro’s depiction of how in love Dev is with Mash is devastatingly heartbreaking, a love story the audience is rooting for from the first scene between the characters. Sharon Shao delivers a wonderfully tuned Mash, making the most of her slow burn scenes and giving a hauntingly authentic energy to her intoxicated Act Two rant in the kitchen.

April Green delivers a beautifully calibrated, brooding Emma, mother to Con and girlfriend to Trig. Miss Green, from the early scene when Con’s “play” is being performed, exudes the dramatic diva-like qualities that, at first, give the impression of a heartless, uncaring artist who is above the rest. However, Miss Green capitalizes on the audience judging her book by its cover with a gut-wrenching outlook on why she and Trig should still be together, even after she walks in on an intimate moment between him and Nina. Andy Cooperfaus is a loveable brute, playing Trig with a smirk, an intelligent frame, and a very comfortable presence that exudes literary genius without apologizing for it. Mr. Cooperfaus has a nice timbre in delivering his smart-aleck retorts to the various characters who call him out on his bullshit, which makes him all the more relatable and egotistical. Finally, Stefan Fisher delivers a genial, warm Sorn, the doctor who only gets bits and pieces to let the audience in on how he truly feels. Otherwise, Mr. Fisher makes the all-wise, embracing doctor a character that draws in the audience’s affection from the very start, and rides that wave of commitment all show long.

The technical designs are nice and simple, which is pleasantly appropriate for this play. Ron Gasparinetti’s scenic design is a lovely backyard with a ready-to-go kitchen that shows Emma’s wealth without overdoing it. Nick Kumamoto brings an effective lighting design to the stage when the moments call for it, allowing Miss Brandt and the actors to truly do the work in creating the intensity and nuance in the majority of the scenes. Stupid Fucking Bird may not be the most alluring title of theatre; in fact, it may turn you off to even seeing it. However, Mr. Posner has written a delicious adaptation of this Chekhov classic, a play that is sure to entertain, make you ponder your life choices, and really leave you affected by the material. Go see this show.
