I've been writing fanfiction since I was young enough to realize I could write about two girls kissing in the safety and privacy of my notebook. That being said, I didn't start seriously posting fanfiction until I was thirteen, and I started writing Warrior Cats fanfiction. I eventually got popular enough for my work to get reposted to other sites and the moment people started bugging me for updates I dropped off the face of the earth and decided that I didn't enjoy the pressure of an audience. (gestures at my content now) Anyway.

I recently went on a very extensive deep dive on Victorian gas lamps and how they operated/when they started using electricity instead.

Oh man, @playcaroplay, what a fantastic bunch of questions. I really had to think about this and it spawned a large conversation with @vixenofcourse over what her personality is built on and her love languages. Thanks for asking!

If Kit had to choose between wearing a style of clothes that’s entirely outside her fashion taste for a whole year OR wear only one plain outfit for a year, which would she choose?

I think Kit would wear a plain outfit. She'd not only prefer to be comfortable, but it would also keep her from feeling like a stranger in her own skin with clothes she doesn't choose. Which is interesting because she's faced with a lack of choice in her clothing in her current predicament and it likely isn't helping her feel secure.

Would her sense of self be affected by it?

Yes, as mentioned above, her lack of choice in clothing impacts how secure she feels. I think Kit is pretty confident, but it would add a layer of feeling as though the clothes are wearing her, instead of vice versa, and thus feeling less like herself. It's going to play a part in further disorienting her in this place and making her feel like she doesn't belong.

What is her sense of self built upon?

Great question and one I had to think about. Her sense of self is built on her relationships, which due to her absentee parents, helped make her feel seen and valued (in the words of @vixenofcourse), as though there was a reason to her being born after all. This plays a huge role in how self-sacrificing she is when it comes to Cora being in danger because she doesn't feel that she has many relationships, but she cherishes what she does have.

Knowing she’s in a new world, how’s her sense of self changed?

Now this is interesting because of how her sense of self is built on her relationships, once she's in a new world, those relationships are gone (aside from Cora). This leaves her floundering a bit, but she also finds value in deeds and acts of service (to quote @vixenofcourse "Acts of service have always been part of her character and she'd be surprised I think to know she is deeply missed"). This, incidentally, helps her build new relationships with the people here, even if she doesn't necessarily realize that she's making them. When this is pointed out to her, (Kyojuro: "have you considered that you're a person people like?" Kit: "absolutely not") she grieves, fearing that she's replacing her relationships from home with the community she's building here.

One of my biggest nitpicks in fiction concerns the feeding of babies. Mothers dying during/shortly after childbirth or the baby being separated form the mother shortly after birth is pretty common in fiction. It is/was also common enough in real life, which is why I think a lot of writers/readers don't think too hard about this. however. Historically, the only reason the vast majority of babies survived being separated from their mother was because there was at least one other woman around to breastfeed them. Before modern formula, yes, people did use other substitutes, but they were rarely, if ever, nutritionally sufficient.

Newborns can't eat adult food. They can't really survive on animal milk. If your story takes place in a world before/without formula, a baby separated from its mother is going to either be nursed by someone else, or starve.

It doesn't have to be a huge plot point, but idk at least don't explicitly describe the situation as excluding the possibility of a wetnurse. "The father or the great grandmother or the neighbor man or the older sibling took and raised the baby completely alone in a cave for a year." Nope. That baby is dead I'm sorry. "The baby was kidnapped shortly after birth by a wizard and hidden away in a secret tower" um quick question was the wizard lactating? "The mother refused to see or touch her child after birth so the baby was left to the care of the ailing grandfather" the grandfather who made the necessary arrangements with women in the neighborhood, right? right? OR THAT GREAT OFFENDER "A newborn baby was left on the doorstep and they brought it in and took care of it no issues" What Are You Going to Feed That Baby. Hello?

Like. It's not impossible, but arrangements are going to have to be made. There are some logistics.

🥪 Lunches are usually quicker for her unless she's eating with someone; Wraps, bentos, pinwheels, etc.

🍛 Dinners are the most decadent meal of the day; if not out with a date or having a show, she's having a family style banquet with her sister and brother in law. Sometimes the meals are themed, sometimes not.

🍸 Chiasa likes a good frozen margarita, as well as a mimosa. A Pink Lady is pretty great too.

☕ Chiasa likes herbal tea above all plain, and likes a few different coffee drinks... And takes her coffee with milk and a little bit of sugar.

😊 Chiasa has pretty much achieved her career goals; being able to have a successful fashion house after severing ties with the Hunger Games peacefully. Otherwise, she hopes to live a long and fulfilling life and make sure the people she loves are safe and happy.

People generally assume if someone's lying about themselves they're trying to look better but sometimes they're trying to look worse. They attribute agency to where they had none, add intent to accidents, try to convince everyone that this is something they did instead of something that happened to them.

I was hanging out at the karaoke bar, chatting with a beautiful woman, and we were really hitting it off. I threw a couple of flirtatious comments her way. She giggled nervously, but abruptly stopped and looked at the floor.

She told me that she was too nervous to hit on people because she's trans and worries that people will view her as a predator and that she might get hurt.

My heart sank. I let her know that she could hit on me in whatever way she wanted and I would LOVE it. We spent the rest of the night hanging out and flirting. We ended up making out. It was great.

But I can't stop thinking about how that wasn't the first time a trans woman has said that to me. About how unsafe it is for some women that they feel the need to give out fucking disclaimers to have normal interactions with people.

We have GOT to make the world a safer place for trans women. It pisses me off that there are men at the bar who are openly predatory towards me without fear of consequence, yet a trans woman is too scared to even fucking call me pretty. And that's because she IS more likely to face worse consequences for lesser things! Like what the fuck!

You need to always check on your internalized biases. Being queer yourself doesn't absolve you of transmisogynistic thoughts and behaviors. Being bi/pansexual doesn't mean you don't hold those biases either! If you feel differently about a trans woman hitting on you than you feel about a cis woman or a man hitting on you, you need to evaluate that.

Trans women, I love you so fucking much. You should be able to express attraction and love as freely as everyone else. I hope you can always feel safe around me. And I'll never stop fighting until you can feel safe period.
