Chapter 28 - If you playing me that mean my home aint home
The flight took less than 5 minutes from the boat to the shore, and in that time Spider had taken 102 breaths and Quaritch had informed him of the key details of the upcoming raid. Spider appreciated at least having a rough idea of the plan this time.Â
âIf the Oloâeyktan refuses to talk, we threaten the Tsahik, just like last time. But if thereâs someone younger, more vulnerable, expect them to get caught up in it as well,â Quaritch warned.Â
âKids?â Spider asked, the alarming thought crossing his mind suddenly.
âWeâll only threaten,â Quaritch answered.Â
Spider shook his head in disbelief at the RDAâs cruelty. âShit.â
They landed on the beach just as they had that morning, only now the clouds were darkening overhead. It would be dusk soon.Â
Spider leapt off without waiting for Quaritch, landing agilely in the sand and standing up to a sight of complete deja vu.Â
They made their way forwards, right into the heart of the village it seemed. Soldiers had already been in and corralled most of the onlooking Taâunui. They were being held back by a cordon of armed marines carrying raised rifles and flamethrowers. The humans were having to fire regular warning shots to keep the villagers at bay, and as Spider and the recoms passed them, a couple broke free from the line, about to attack, before being jabbed by the electric rods that Spider had first seen yesterday. When the Taâunui man was struck by the baton his whole body convulsed and spasmed as he fell to the floor, screaming.Â
Spider gasped, tears welling in his eyes. Fuck.Â
The Oloâeyktan and Tsahik were waiting for them near one of the shelters that rested near a mangrove. They were bound and kneeling, just as the pair from the morning had been.Â
â<Take them out!>â the Oloâeyktan was crying, and to Spiderâs horror, he caught sight of what the man was referring to.Â
Crying at the back of the shelter were two Taâunui children, who couldnât be older than four or five. To Spider, they looked like twins. Their faces were certainly an exact mirror of terror and fright when the recom squad walked in. Spiderâs heart plunged to the floor.Â
âShut up!â a human with a stun gun yelled fiercely at the man in response.Â
â Mawey ,â Spider called over to the kids. His voice broke. â<Be still, everything will be alright.>â He tried to sound confident, but he thought it just came out desperate.Â
All eyes turned to him as he addressed the children, and their small eyes peered up at him in fear and confusion when they realised this alien could talk to them.Â
Catching on, their parents capitalised on this quickly.
â<Please! Please take the children out! Donât hurt them, weâll do anything you ask!>â The Tsahik addressed Spider directly, and he was so shocked to be spoken to as if he was the one in charge, that he momentarily forgot how to speak.Â
â<It will be okay,>â Quaritch allowed Spider to continue. â<These people just want to ask you something,>â he glanced towards Quaritch, who seemed to take that as a cue to begin the interrogation.Â
âJake Sully. Toruk Makto. <Where is he?>â Quaritch started, as Wainfleet passed him the screen showing Jakeâs face.Â
The leadersâ eyes widened. â<We donât know!>â the Tsahik replied. â<Please, you have wasted your time. We have never seen him before!>â
At Quaritchâs look, Spider translated. âThey havenât seen him. Weâve come to the wrong village.â
âNope,â Quaritch replied confidently. âI think they just donât understand.â The man crouched down, so he was at eye level with the kneeling Oloâeyktan. âLook,â he began again. His voice seeped with feigned sympathy. â<I donât want to hurt you. We donât want to hurt you. But. We need the information. When you tell us, we leave.>â
Ordinarily Spider would have been impressed with the level of Naâvi that Quaritch was able to use now, but his gaze was trained on the cowering children at the back. They were a boy and a girl, clinging to each other. Two humans stood over them, electric rods raised and ready to strike if they moved.Â
âTell him as soon as they tell us, we leave.â
Spider was brought back to the clan leadersâ attention as he closed his eyes to translate the words.Â
â<We do not know!>â the Oloâeyktan repeated, as the woman beside him wept.Â
Spider looked at Quaritch despairingly, pleading with his eyes for them to back off now.Â
âHmm.â Quaritch was quiet. He was considering something.Â
The whole assembly held their breath.Â
âBring me one of the tykes,â he told one of the soldiers guarding the kids.Â
No.
â Kehe! â The parents wailed as the soldier standing nearest to them began to reach for the little girl.Â
Lots of things happened at once. Mansk and Savine moved closer to hold the clan leaders down as they struggled to break free. Wainfleet and Fike quickly backed them up, ensuring the Oloâeyktan and Tsahik were firmly pressed against the floor. Spider lunged forward, pushing over the human who had grabbed the Naâvi girl. He hissed as he pushed the child behind him. The other human immediately moved to overpower Spider, brandishing the electric rod, sparks flying. The sound sent cackles through the air, and Spiderâs eyes widened. That shit looked painful.Â
âShit!â he exclaimed, now finding himself in a stand-off between the human marines and the Naâvi children. He had no weapon, just his bare hands, which were held aloft in front of him against the soldiers.Â
âOkay.â Quaritch held his hand out to calm the situation. âLetâs everybody just take it down a notch.â
âNo one touches the kids,â Spider announced firmly, not taking his eyes off the soldiers in front of him.Â
The rest of the recom team were too occupied keeping the Oloâeyktan and Tsahik on the floor. He had the upper hand.Â
â<It will be okay,>â Spider whispered behind him.Â
âAlright, I hear you Spider, okay?â Why did Quaritch sound preoccupied? Something was wrong.Â
Spider had realised a second too late. Fike had left the team holding down the Tsahik, and was standing right behind the kids, out of Spiderâs line of sight. The man lunged for the little girl, grabbing her in one fluid motion as Spider spun around.Â
âNo!â he cried, pouncing forwards to protect, but something struck him from behind. Something cold. He had no idea he had been stunned until he hit the ground.Â
His whole body seized up, he couldnât move - he couldnât breathe. His muscles spasmed and cramped agonisingly for seconds that lasted years. âAhh!â he screamed, as soon as his body relaxed, crawling away from the source of the attack. âFuck!âÂ
âThatâs enough!â Quaritch roared, grabbing hold of the marine who had shocked Spider, and picking him up in both hands, completely lifting him off the ground before slamming him down to the floor with as much force as his powerful arms were capable of. But Quaritch wasnât done. The Colonel picked the soldier up again, and this time threw him completely clear of the shelter. The man crumpled to the ground ten feet away on the sand, unmoving.Â
Spider could do nothing except try and force shuddering breaths in while his body recovered.Â
âPlease, not the kidsâŚâ he begged.Â
Quaritch looked him over, and Spider did his utmost to sit up, still gasping slightly. He hated the way the manâs eyes were filled with concern - soft around the edges and open, searching for signs of injury. Hypocrite .Â
Quaritch seemed to decide something after a moment, because he moved away, back to the little girl struggling against the marine.Â
â<Hello,>â he bent down to get as close to her eye level as possible. She was clearly terrified. â<My name is Quaritch. Your mother and father have been very bad. This man - Jake Sully, Toruk Makto, Oloâeyktan of the Omatikaya. Where is he? He is in this village?>â
â<Get away from her!>â growled the Tsahik. The Oloâeyktan let out a string of curses and threats, some of which were unintelligible even to Spider.Â
The girlâs eyes overflowed with tears as she shook her tiny head, braids swinging.Â
âYou got what you want!â Spider called. âNow let her go!â he scrambled over to the little boy, and surprisingly no one stopped him. He touched the boyâs arm, trying to comfort, not wanting to scare him further. â<It will be okay, it will be okay.>â
The boy whimpered before him.Â
Quaritch growled. âMove out!â he roared, once again commanding the burning of the village.Â
Spider saw the little boy and girl returned to their parents once the recoms backed off, but had to turn his back as the sobs of the reunited family triggered something deep down in his bones.Â
The squad moved out, only the one other human stopping to check on his fallen comrade. Spider didnât hang back.Â
As he followed Quaritch along the beach, he did his best to just not think about it. If he ignored the last half an hour, pretended it never happened, it couldnât affect him, right?
So Spider cleared his mind and focused instead on putting one foot after the other. The sand was soft and more difficult of a texture to walk on. It didnât help that his calves already felt like they were on fire, and his thighs burned with the effort to keep up.Â
As they returned to the ikran, the smell of burning filled Spiderâs mask like a poison from the flaming village, which was illuminating the now dark sky. He coughed, trying to clear the mask of it, but it was useless.Â
Hopelessness bubbled up his throat, threatening to overcome him. But Spider was strong; he pushed it down forcefully. He would not break again.Â
He reached Cupcake before he realised, stopping short. Quaritch came up behind and before he could react, had lifted him up with both hands onto the animal.Â
âYou alright kid? You hurt?â Quaritch asked once he was also mounted.Â
Spider shook his head in response.Â
What a lie.
Sadly for Spider, Quaritch attempted conversation as they flew back to the waiting ship. âYou know, I never wanted you to get hurt.â
Spider ignored him. He couldnât be bothered to entertain this. Heâd been pushed, grabbed, drugged and shocked, all with only a couple of hours sleep the night before. It felt like years ago that he had asked Quaritch to stay in his room with him while he struggled to recover from that nightmare. Night terror , Quaritch had called it. Spider laughed a short, sarcastic laugh. Add that to the day ones.Â
Quaritch misinterpreted this. âYou do know that, donât you kid?â
Spider groaned. âEnough!â he said. âI donât care! I donât give a shit what you believe, if you were any type of father youâd listen when I told you I would always hate you.â
Now it was Quaritchâs turn to fall quiet. Thank Eywa.Â
Night had fallen in earnest by the time they landed. Artificial lights illuminated parts of the deck, but the lack of any plant life to bioluminesce made the place feel creepy and dead.
Spider thought he had never been in a place so dark before, stranded out at sea.Â
He climbed off the ikran as the rest of the squad swooped down.Â
âWe camp out on deck tonight boys,â Quaritch stated. The squad went off to retrieve their packs from wherever theyâd stored them while the ikran screeched goodbye by flying off into the night.
Where did that leave Spider?
Quaritched seemed to have the same thought. He turned the boy. âItâs 18:34, you stick with us until later. Then you can sleep inside the ship if I think youâll be cool.â
Spider let out a disbelieving laugh as he shook his head in annoyance. He needed to be babysat, even on a boat in the middle of the ocean. Of course.
They moved towards the starboard side of the deck, which was a large, clear area. Slumping down to sit at the railings, he swung his legs over the edge and watched the water. The ship was travelling further out to sea, but the wind wasnât strong. The water glowed where the edge of the ship cut through the waves, but other than this and a flood light on deck, it was completely dark. Despite his repressed terror at being alone on the vast ocean, he dangled his legs down and began to look for creatures in the waves.Â
He had expected to see animals resembling dolphins or whales, perhaps leaping out of the water like heâd seen in old Earth TV shows, but there was nothing.
The sea was empty and black. Spider shivered. He wondered if this was normal, or whether the sea creatures just knew to stay away from the alien ship.
The noise of chatter and laughter brought his attention back on board. He turned around to see the recoms lighting a fire in some sort of container, and setting their packs around it for the night.Â
âHey kid,â Savine called over. âYou wanna try the game again?â
Spider turned and shook his head. He was so tired.Â
Another wave of pent up emotion coursed through his insides, but Spider had become skilled at pushing these away. Like earlier, he pressed it down, focusing on the here and now. He realised his head was starting to get dizzy from tiredness. He couldnât stay where he was in case he drifted off and fell overboard, so he picked himself up and moved to slump against a wall near the warmth of the fire. He just wanted to close his eyes. He knew sleep was coming, fast. He was almost embarrassed about it.Â
He lay his head against the hard wall, and brought his knees up to his chest. He closed his eyes, so ready to escape this reality.Â
âNah-ah, youâre not falling asleep like that.â Quaritch had spotted him. Spider opened his eyes to see the man rummaging in his pack for his jacket, from which he also pulled out Spiderâs own spare clothing and a nutrient bar. âEat this first,â Quaritch ordered.Â
âIâm not hungry,â Spider said without any emotion, but he was betrayed by the rumbling of his stomach.Â
He sighed, irritated as Quaritch smirked at him. He grabbed the bar and managed to eat it by only taking his mask off twice. It was such an annoyance.Â
âYou happy now?â Spider growled harshly. He did nothing to soften the hatred in his voice.Â
Quaritch handed him the clothes as a pillow and threw the jacket over Spiderâs abused body.Â
As soon as Quaritchâs back was turned, Spiderâs eyes closed. He didnât even think to check his oxygen before he passed out completely.Â

⌠I canât imagine that we actually watched the same show. Like I REALLY AISNSOSNWKMEJDND
hold on Iâm gonna need to calm down.
Let me just make a list of why I disagree and at least organize my anger. Long post incoming.
Vander was friends and had a deal with Grayson. The sheriff. Idk what else to even add to that
Caitlyn is more than a cop and Arcane isnât copaganda. Genuinely donât know what kind of progress some of these people are looking for. Real allies are a necessity for real progress.
SILCO IS A CLASS TRAITOR. HE FUNNELLED DRUGS INTO THE UNDERCITY AND PUT POOR KIDS IN FACTORIES FOR THAT DRUG FOR PROFIT!!! HE PAID THE ENFORCERS TO LET HIM DO IT WITHOUT CONSEQUENCE
Vi is not as much as an activist as you would like to believe
WHY IS EKKO NEVER EVER BROUGHT UP IN THESE CONVERSATIONS????
Silco was not good for the Undercity
Silco was not a great guy. Ekko had to build an entire separate hidden community for the people he hurt and stepped on for his own benefit
Caitlyn is ignorant and naive. Thatâs ok. Thatâs what character development is for.
Loving imperfect characters like Silco and Jinx then hating characters like Vi and Caitlyn is peak media illiteracy to me
FOR THE LAST TIME: VI DIDNT ABANDON POWDER!!!!! Silco literally wanted Vi DEAD for trying to stop him from killing Vander??? How could you possibly say silco was there for jinx when Vi refused to be???? SHE WAS IN PRISON BECAUSE OF HIM???
Silcoâs manipulation is working wonders on yâall
Embracing all the outrage without at all looking out for the people harmed by bigotry is not activism
SILCO IS A CLASS TRAITOR x929282929394
Caitlyn was the first person in years to show Vi kindness and care. She listened and stuck by her and took care of her after Vi was locked up for years and beat up by cops (i wonder what led her to be thrown in there?). Cait being a cop stopped being a point of contention once Vi recognized her naivety and genuineness.
NUANCE NUANCE NUANCE. ITS NEVER EVER BLACK AND WHITE
The only way I can see Vi touching âclass traitorâ in season one was the shimmer raid. Guess who the hell put those kids in there in the first place.
Just hanging out with Caitlyn isnât being a class traitor if Vanderâs allowed to be friends with Grayson.
Critical thinking is very necessary for watching shows like Arcane
What the hell did Silco really do for the Undercity???? What changed over the 7(ish) years he was basically in power of the place? All Iâve heard was he made the air cleaner, which would be great except for, you know, shimmer and the child factory workers
Jinx is unwell and feeding into it like this in a fully serious manor would not help Arcane as a show at all
What do you want Arcaneâs message as a full show to be? âScrew copsâ? Thatâs a little boring and unproductive isnât it?
CAN WE TALK ABOUT EKKO AND HIS IMPACT PLEASE???? x9382728283
Caitlyn is trying to make Piltover and Zaun a better place. Is that not allowed? Am I missing something?
Caitlyn and Viâs arcs have only just started. Season one is basically fully set up except for characters like silco and Jinx. This is far from the end.
Genuinely think Vander would appreciate Vi for being friends (using this term loosely because they are in love) with Caitlyn considering he was the one who was opposed to war and Vi wasnât.
Silco should NOT be your idea of Undercity independence and respect. He oppressed the Undercity the same way the Council and the Enforcers did. He helped no one but himself, his team (barely) and Jinx.
Youâre allowed to like and dislike any character you want but pretending like Silco is better for the Undercity than others is just so ridiculous to me. Everyone is of course completely allowed to like Silco, but we canât pretend like heâs this stand up guy. If you have to pretend like he was, maybe you donât like him as much as you think.
âBecause Caitâs prettyâ is also incredibly incorrect. Go check point #14.
Vi never stopped loving and caring for Powder. Powderâs mental health issues were amplified and utilized by Silco because he couldnât even heal himself.
If all of your opinions of Caitlyn and Vi start and end with âcops suckâ and âclass traitorâ then you genuinely donât respect Arcane as a show enough to show you nuance.
The misinterpretation of characters is just so ⌠itâs like you go out of your way to love and/or hate characters no matter how much they show you who you are.
Your closed mindedness is clouding your judgement and making you out to seem like you donât actually want the Undercityâs triumph, you want Silco and Jinxâs, even if it means ruining the Undercity. And that would be fine because father/daughter evil duo but trying to say youâre all for this duo because you want whatâs better for the Undercity when they continue to hurt it is simply not correct and very harmful (to fictional characters in a fictional universe đ)
Only being able to understand how Silco and Jinx were oppressed and therefore should be able to not just destroy Piltover but also Zaun is not the eat you think it is
Why is Viktor never called a class traitor? I think he's great (I also think Silco and Jinx are wonderfully written) but we hardly saw him in the Undercity/ interact with people from the Undercity plus he killed someone (Sky) from there (accidentally)
EDIT TO ADD ANOTHER POINT: Caitlyn has shown little to NO malicious intent and has no real negative impacts other than Jinxâs attachment issues and insecurities being amplified by her mere existence. Again, this is her story and development. Throughout the season she is exposed to reality and recognizes her and her peers/ families wrongs. I have no idea what you want from this character. Should Piltover just be gotten rid of in the story? Then what? Should Caitlyn have just never gotten involved and continued to embrace her privilege? Should she have left Vi in prison and stay ignorant?
