When DID Can Form

Based on my extensive research, I believe DID can develop between the ages of 6-12. This is wide range is due to a multitude of factors, including neurodivergence, I've found. Autism and other such things cause someone to have a low stress tolerance and/or get stuck FEELING a certain age subjectively/mentally due to the stress in their life and/or the Autism. This would explain why the physical age range is so wide.

(personal trauma mention; non-extensive talk) I know this is true due to the fact that we are Autistic and have gone through several bouts of stunted mental age, AND it causes a very low stress tolerance. Our most major traumas didn't happen UNTIL we were bodily 10-16. We had some other "smaller" traumas before that, and we were essentially emotionally neglected by both parents for the entire duration of childhood and beyond. For someone with a low stress tolerance, though, this is enough to prevent a full personality from developing. Especially considering we weren't even really being taught how to have a personality (see "emotional neglect" and "Autism" haha).

Everything stated here is based on extensive research and personal experience. We're not professionals (but we certainly could be considered such at this point).

We completely agree with all of this. Sometimes, when everything is quiet in the brain (like it is right now ;-;), we wish we had someone to talk to and hangout with as if we don't have a system already >< And we absolutely had imaginary friends growing up, at least one of which I'm pretty sure ended up being a part.

So yeah, if someone wishes they were a system, there is absolutely something much deeper going on in their head/life that needs attention!

Whenever I see someone saying they “wish they were a system,” I don’t think: “Oh how DARE they try to mock this shit that debilitates me every day!”

I think, “I wonder what in this world could make them feel like they need to have multiple voices in their head.” I think, “Are they lonely..? Did they even have any friends whilst growing up..? Were they neglected..?”

I understand because I also felt this way as a little kid, elementary school age (5-10). **I** wanted to be less alone as a kid, so I created imaginary characters that began to separate and distinguish themselves from one another. While yes, I had some major events of trauma, my trauma was what I thought as “monotonous” or “insignificant.” I just wanted someone to talk to, someone to confide in. I didn’t feel safe telling an adult what I went through, so it was stored in another alter.

You guys are so quick to jump at someone you have no information on in any way. You don’t know how educated this person is on the complexities of DID, and you don’t know what the person went through at all.

Please stop being so harsh and aggressive towards people figuring themselves out.. you would want that grace too..

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I'M BACK! The hiatus is over, though I do admit that a week ago I thought I would never pick this fic up again. My heart wasn't in it anymore. But you know that feeling when you read something so amazing, especially if it's written by a friend, that no matter how low you feel it will drag you right back to the surface and help you emotionally reconnect to the thing you were disconnected from? This happened to me. As soon as I finished reading I went back to work.

So I offer this chapter as a thank you to @ambeauty and the last chapter of OTR. Literally brought me back from the dead. I know how you love these two together so I hope you'll enjoy it!
