Hi! :D I heard you were having a rough time, so I just wanted to pop in and say I always enjoy seeing your name pop up in my notifications and though we haven’t interacted much I know you are kind and considerate and care about others. I still remember an ask you sent me months ago about my writing and it makes me smile. You deserve all the hugs and love, school can be such a pain in the butt and absolutely terrible for your physical and mental well being. I hope you’re able to take a breath and take some time for yourself to try and make everything stop spinning for a while. Either way, we’re all here for you ❤️
Honestly, tumblr and everyone on here has been helping me combat the issues school gives me. I think I might have developed a dependency on it woops. I guess it kinda just shows how wonderful LU and the Zelda communities are if you've helped me this much.
I'm not sure why people have suddenly flocked to check up on me coz I'm kinda just a lurker that posts about Four every so often, but I'm really glad that you all have. It's been rough the last few weeks and it's really brightened up my day.
#ask russ#there's been so many people i look up to who've checked in on me today and i'm baffled#it's a bit intimidating at first but in a good way#i like you guys#i'm just a bit anxious to reach out and tell people how cool you are most of the time

Blorbo Spotlight: Commander Pepa
Today in the spotlight we have a character from Ellie @hawkepockets (he/him.) Ellie has been playing GW2 since Season 1 and draws cartoons. Go check out his blog!
(art by @hawkepockets)
Who do we have the pleasure of speaking with today?
The Commander. Pepa.
What's your background? Where do you come from?
Rata Sum, same as anyone! Statics was home for a while. Then the Priory - 17 years as an Explorer! But you know what we asura say, time's an underground river. Fast, cold, hard to see ahead, and always liable to plunge you into a long lightless, airless tube with smooth rock on every side. I guess it's been rushing me along from place to place for a long time now!
What are some important relationships in your life? (romantic, platonic, familial, etc)
Oh, I'm lucky enough to have a few. Taimi, my protege - don't let her hear me call her that. My partners, Teek and Tarakk. Gorrik is... hm. I guess that's up to Taimi. Don't let her hear me say that, either. And of course, the whole guild is really dear to me. My family is still out there in Rata Sum, too! ... I should comm them, shouldn't I?
Have you done anything you'd like to brag about?
If you're asking the Commander? Nothing you haven't heard before. If you're asking ME? Well, I try to stay humble about it but Taimi let me write a foreword to her treatise draft! Or, she let me put forward a draft for her consideration. I think she asked some other asura too. Ones who've been more recently involved in academia. I bet Zojja wrote one. I bet she liked Zojja's... Drat.
What's your profession? What does a typical day look like for you?
I'm a spectre, obviously. Haven't you read... Oh, you. You mean like a job, don't you. Well, I'm. You know. I'm the Commander.
What are some hobbies you enjoy?
It's been a long time since I raided Stone Summit tombs and lost ratas for the Priory, but I still love collecting artifacts. Things that tell you about the habits and priorities of long dead communities. It sounds sad, but some of the toys, tools, and adornments I've found make me smile whenever I handle them. So many millions of people came before us. And now that the Cycle is ended, I know there will be so many after. I also like that human game, tennis.
(Note from the creator: Teek is @pyroengi's OC, and Tarakk was co-created with @antariies!)
-
That's all for today! If you're an UWU guild member and would like to put your character in the spotlight, use this form!

Pen and Paper Planning
Maybe you like me are endlessly drawn back to pen and paper. I have often felt more at home in a good notebook. For a long time I thought there just weren't many options for notebook systems in comparison to "productivity" apps but over the years I've collected a number of them that I pull inspiration from for my own system. I've been told my little compilations are helpful so I thought I'd share what I've found here with some notes about each.
Bullet Journal
The OG. I think bujo has gotten a bad rap by people who've only every interacted with it via aesthetic routes like instagram. I found out not to long ago that there are people who don't know what the original system entails at all so I thought it was worth mentioning here.
Check it out here.
I recommend it less as a "productivity" system and more as a style of rapid/micro journaling. Does journaling feel like it takes forever and just isn't worth it - this is the system for you. When you go into it with that mindset, it's a lot easier to get the benefits. Wouldn't really recommend it for full blown tasks management and planning but the creator is upfront he never really intended it for that.
Everbook
This is more of a folio style as opposed to a notebook system but I think there are aspects that translate nicely to notebooks. It's definitely more of a productivity system too - very GTD influenced according to it's creator. I like it for it's modular approach to tasks, inspiration, and tracking.
Check it out here.
I recommend this if you like multi-notebook systems and are focused on getting tasks done more so than reflection/introspection.
Analog by Ugmonk
Basically a glorified notecard but this one has been a real game changer for me with regard to my daily tasks. I keep my today card clipped to the cover of my journal. You don't need to buy their fancy system for it at all and lots of people have hacks of it. Easy to combine with 1-3-5 Lists and the Bento Method as well.
Check it out here.
I recommend it for people who prefer a more flexible way of planning their days than what traditional planners offer.
Strikethru
I've not gotten to try many aspects of Strikethru yet but there are some I'm definitely looking to incorporate in another journal. Strikethru is a much more task oriented system than a bullet journal. It features a "live list", "dump" "vault" and calendar. I think it best replicates what you do what many to-do apps. They have their own journal you can buy but it can be set up in your own notebook.
Check it out here.
I recommend this for people who are doing large projects with lots of moving parts.
Theme System by CPG Grey
I love CPG Grey's ideas about yearly and seasonal themes. He created a notebook to compliment those ideas. It basically is composed of a section on fleshing out your themes, daily reflection pages, and habit tracking. I like the light direction while still being freeform enough for most goals.
Check it out here.
And here.
I recommend it for people who's primary use case is self improvement oriented. If you're looking to move the needle forward in some area of your life, themes are a great way to start.
Commonplace Book
I think the best way to think of a Commonplace Book is that it's a sketchbook for ideas. I think too often with digital systems it's easy to get caught up in worrying about capturing all of our ideas or optimizing them to be found again - which only really adds stress and unnecessary complexity. What I like about a commonplace book is not only it's usage throughout history but it's simplicity.
Check it out here.
And here.
I recommend this for people who are looking to do a lot of creative or intellectual work and don't want to get distracted by screens to capture what inspires and moves them. Also for people who prefer to refer to their inspiration in a more tactile way.
Maurice Moves' Notebook
When I first found this method, it had very few views. When I went to look it up again, it had taken off. I'm so glad because it feels like an underrated system that can be easily paired with some of the other. It's basically a series of pages he uses to work through goals or just directions he wants to move in life. I've never see a system that's both so orderly and thorough. I especially appreciate is way of working backwards from his desired results to develop his plan.
Check it out here.
I recommend this for people who are trying to achieve big things but aren't totally sure how to get here. Seems very neurodivergent friendly too depending on what you personally excel with.
1-3-5 Lists
I first learned about a similar concept from Esme Weijun Wang's ebook "Productivity Journaling with Limitations" but I can't seem to find it on her website anymore. This website has one version of it but the version I've been using is slightly different.
The first task is my "win the day task" - if I only do this it was a productive day. It's achievable based on the resources I have that day. On low energy days , the task might be a simple chore like laundry or a health activity like walking. On a high energy day, it's usually something that moves me forward in some way - tackling projects like redoing my room or organizing all of our papers. Most days are inbetween though.
The next three have historically been "to not cause myself further trouble" tasks but I've been experimenting with making them one home/work task, one health task, and one relationships task as mentioned in this Ali Abdaal video (in Part 3).
The next five to six tasks are usually just easy wins - things I can get to if I feel like it but I feel no pressure to complete.
I recommend this system for people who are working with variable energy, health, time, or other resources. I could see it being helpful for folks with children or who are caregivers as well. I've found it useful as someone with chronic illness.
Sorry this section is a bit of a mess, when I originally put it on here I thought I could just link to Wang's ebook but alas. If anyone has the link, please drop it in comments.
Bento Methodology
This is another one that can be paired with another system. While the video I link to is talking about it in terms of an app, I think it's similar to the 1-3-5 system in that you can just use it inside of any other to-do list or task system you might be using. I appreciate it's nudge to do deep work and it's clear criteria for each compartment. I use this when I have more energy and want to use it to the best effect. Whenever I use it I always feel like I had a really meaningful day in terms of my efforts.
Check it out here.
I recommend this for people who want some structure to their day but still want flexibility from day to day to pick what they work on.
And I think that's most of them. I hope something here inspires you to pick up a notebook and get to writing. Best wishes!

It's been a year and a half. Of course Larkspur still hurts, but constant agony has given way to a dull ache most of the time. There are still moments where he breaks down, sometimes when he's reminded, and sometimes out of nowhere, but for the most part, he's able to go about his life almost as normal.
More and more, he allows himself to heal, to accept his reality. He's no longer jealous of his sister or his boyfriend. He's even been able to tolerate spectating most of the Entrails' matches.
Sometimes, the saddest thing to him isn't that he can no longer interact with his Palisman, but that Lark's loved ones can't. Lark can feel the glow in his own chest, but the same can't be said for his friends and family.
Lately, in his dreams, he senses that familiar golden warmth not just in his heart, but also beside him. It's moved slowly outward, as he moves onward. Tonight, the presence is almost staggering, almost tangible.
Then he feels a small creature alight on his shoulder. He doesn't need to look to know who it is, but he does anyway. Of course he does.
You'll see me again, Flapjack had said to him back then. Lark didn't dare to hope that it would be literal, but at least here, now, in his dreams, the bird is as vibrant a red as he was when they first met.
They don't need to say anything. Their shared love is understood. For a time, in that nebulous dreamspace, they just sit and enjoy one another's company.
When Lark wakes, it's with tears in his eyes and a smile on his lips. The weathered carving he sleeps with is as pale blue and motionless as ever, but this morning, it doesn't sadden him. He runs his thumb fondly over Flapjack's crest before rolling out of bed to get ready for the day.
Some weekends, the squad comes with him to the forest. When he isn't carving, Lark helps Willow and Dell tend the palistrom trees with Plant magic. The rest of the group does what they can physically, planting and watering saplings and keeping the area clean and safe.
Everyone socializes with the older Palismen who've yet to find their witches. It would make sense for their numbers to lessen as more of them bond with their partners, but more and more have actually seemed to venture out of the old forests in the time since Belos' defeat and the fall of the Coven system, almost faster than witches can take them in. Which is fine by Lark, really. He's happy that they feel safe enough to show themselves. And even with their magic helping some of the trees grow large enough to harvest a branch or two here and there, the palistrom forest is still so thin that he feels guilty with each cut he takes.
Once all the trees have been checked on, and the wild Palismen are entertained, he contemplates the latest branch. Having carved a couple dozen by now, he has a good idea of how many he can make while wasting the least amount of wood. He stares long enough that he feels eyes on himself as well.
Someone eventually asks what they're all wondering. Is he ever going to carve for himself?
And, as he has each time he's held a block in his hands, Lark considers it. But today, unlike every other time, he doesn't feel an overwhelming longing to do so. He feels lighter, somehow, as if a long-shouldered burden has been lifted.
"No," he answers with both softness and finality. "I don't think I need to anymore. I just want to help other people find their partners... I want to make up for all the damage I caused. Hopefully... put more kindness out there than all the hurt, you know?"
It makes sense, in a way. They've all been there for him since he lost Flap. They've all seen his growth. Luz and Gus as his siblings and Willow and Nico as his partners all have sad but knowing smiles for him, in their own ways.
Just as he sets the branch down to start his cuts, something in the canopy moves. A figure swoops down toward him, and if it weren't for the color, Lark would swear he knows the silhouette. But the old bird-shaped Palisman that lands on his outstretched hand is blue.
They stare at one another for a moment before Lark lifts his other hand to stroke its head. Come to think of it, he does recall seeing this one among the others occasionally, but it's never approached him before now.
"Nice to finally meet you," he says with a relieved, breathy laugh.
Waffles coos in response, and he understands her.
My little Lark, I've been waiting for you.

Is any mention made in Ed's old radio show that he was dating a teenager at the time? If you do a deep dive (and a bit of math) on his now wife's Instagram, she was 17 and he was 24 when they first got together. Not illegal, but I'm not wrong to find that icky, right?
No mention of that, but I'm into April 2010 at the moment, which would be before that started happening. Having checked, though, you do seem to be right, though they might have been 18 and 24, which I guess is better, though still not great. Is there any chance you know from looking it up that it was definitely 17 and not 18?
Yeah, extremely icky, technically legal but I have spent enough time working with teenagers, and with adults who behave inappropriately around teenagers, to know that as soon as you start describing a situation as "technically legal", the older guy in that situation is probably someone you, at minimum, want to stop inviting out to pub nights (example from my real life). Does it also mean you want to stop listening to that guy make dirty jokes on a podcast that suddenly seem less funny if you know he was actually willing to sleep with teenage girls in real life? Yep, probably, to be honest thinking too hard about this is making me feel slightly physically sick so I'm going to stop. Not saying... I guess that age gap is not objectively bad enough so it should automatically make people feel sick. But it does make me feel sick due to experience.
I started a Taskmaster re-watch a few weeks ago, it went well until I got to season 4, which was my favourite season (narrowly nudging out 5 and 9) until a couple of years ago when I learned about Noel Fielding's history with teenage girls as well, so when I got to season 4 on the re-watch and remembered that Noel Fielding who used to be my favourite is difficult to watch now, I just stopped the re-watch for a bit. Picked it back up yesterday and decided I can ignore it enough to watch a Taskmaster season, it's not like I'm hanging out with the guy in real life. Got this message while I was watching Taskmaster and trying not think about adult men sleeping with teenage girls, may have initially reacted defensively especially since I actually tried to calculate the age gap from the start of the Gamble relationship months ago and thought it wasn't that bad, then later today I checked again and it turns out I added it up wrong months ago, and you're right. Maybe. She might have been 18. But still.
Honestly combining it with the Taskmaster re-watch is weirdly making me feel like this might be less likely to ruin the Peacock and Gamble podcast for me, just because it sort of gives the impression that if you'd like to avoid men who've slept with teenage girls when they were adults, you basically have to avoid all comedy. Hence the feeling vaguely sick and finding this depressing. But yeah, you're right, very icky, it'll probably be a couple of days before I can tell whether this has actually ruined my ability to enjoy listening to Ed Gamble talk shit. God fucking damn it. I don't know, it's probably not even that objectively bad, I do have a particular trigger point for the issue of adults sleeping with teenagers, because of the work I've done in my life. But of all the things to get disproportionately triggered about in life, I don't think that's a horribly unreasonable one.
It's not even about the action for me, not the part of it that makes me find it viscerally icky. It's the mentality. It's because I've worked with so many teenagers and see them as young people that I want to protect, and then knowing that other adults can look at them and see someone to want to have sex with, that makes me feel sick regardless of the specifics in a situation. It makes me feel like it tarnishes everything I've done with my life. Like actually people are right to be suspicious of adults who get personally close to teenagers.
Sorry I thought you were wrong at first and made a post to that effect (which I've now taken down so hopefully you just didn't see it), I just wanted you to be wrong. Fuck.
Quick question, just in case I find that my ability to listen to Ed Gamble's voice without feeling sick does not recover within the next couple of days so I need to listen to something else instead. Does anyone know whether any members of Pappy's Fun Club have, to the very best of all public knowledge, ever slept with a teenager while being an adult? Just fucking tell me now, don't let me find out ~85 episodes into a really funny series of podcasts.

This is not at anyone here. This is at the U.S. healthcare system, particularly as it relates to neurodivergent trans people. Rant below the cut.
So, back in April, I asked my med manager for a referral to get evaluated for autism. Said med manager does not do it herself since she doesn't do diagnoses, and neither does the facility she works at, so she referred me out. I was then told that the place will be in touch with me to get me scheduled, and this may take up to 6-12 months as they have a waiting list. But, I can check on that referral at any time by calling them. Cool.
More background information: I started taking Effexor more than a month ago (probably close to two months now) since Zoloft, my old anti-depressant, wasn't really working. I noticed that, on the 75 mg dose of Effexor, I sometimes experienced brain fog, muscle weakness, and other things I associated with my seizures. Effexor worked, but I felt it was also lowering my seizure threshold. Med manager, who prescribed the Effexor, told me to contact my neurologist about it since my neurologist handles my epilepsy. Fine. No problem. That usually isn't an issue.
I couldn't reach my neurologist. I called her office at least twice and had her medical assistant call me back, who promised me my neurologist would call me back. That never happened. So, I tried another method, which was MyChart. I sent a message to my neurologist there on July 6, and I never heard back. Nothing. I don't see her until the end of November, so now I need to try and basically move up my appointment just to get a basic question about a prescription answered. I schedule my appointments with her a year in advance, so I don't know how much luck I'll have there.
So, that's one fail of the U.S. Healthcare system. Let's move on to what happened yesterday and today.
Yesterday, I meet with my med manager to go over a few things. I bring a list with me because not only has it been about a month since I last saw her, but I wanted to get the ball rolling on a couple other things. I wanted to see if an evaluation for ADHD was separate from the one I was getting for autism, and I wanted to get a referral letter for top surgery. For those who've known me for a while, you've known I've lived with gender dysphoria since 2016-17. It's been a long time. I want to get that started now and not keep waiting around.
What she ended up telling me: an ADHD eval is part of the autism one I'm going to have since it's a full neuropsych eval. Okay, that makes sense. Cool. I move on to the next subject: top surgery. She tells me to go to a place in the city to talk to them about surgery. They don't do anything with top surgery. Yes, they do gender affirming healthcare, but I was specifically asking for a referral letter. I looked into what I needed for top surgery in my state before this appointment (not directly before, but days before). I need at least one letter from a mental health provider for it. Why did my med manager refer me to somewhere that doesn't do that and will likely just tell me to go back to her?
She said that she or my therapist, who works in the same facility, could write the letter, but still. STILL. She sent me to another place first. I am a trans person who doesn't need hormone therapy. I need top surgery. My gender dysphoria is well documented in their system. I checked. It became abundantly clear to me in that moment that she doesn't have many trans patients. At all. That facility in general probably doesn't considering the last med manager I had there was transphobic. Anyway.
Today: I called this morning to check on the status of my referral for the neuropsych eval. It turns out that they couldn't accept my referral because they don't have a specialist, so they sent it back for my PCP to handle (same facility as my med manager and my therapist). My med manager didn't see this at all. I'm not even sure she was looking at my chart to be honest. If she did, maybe she would've saw this and said, "Oh, I need to refer you to somewhere else or have your PCP do it." But no, I get to be back at square fucking one again. Because I couldn't ask my med manager to get that referral for a neuropsych exam. I had to go through my PCP to do it. Make it make sense.
I am so goddamn frustrated with this system. I'm just trying to take care of my health and be somewhat proactive about it, but I fucking can't. At this point, I don't know what to do. I might leave this facility all together and start over with a new PCP, new therapist, and new med manager. But, then I run the risk of not being in therapy for months, not seeing a med manager for months to a year, and not seeing a PCP for months to a year as well. And I'm in the middle of a med change too. Not only that, but I don't want to be a difficult patient or someone who just quits doctors or places willy-nilly. This is my third med manager, fourth therapist, and fourth PCP since I moved here nearly 10 years ago.
I don't know what to do. What the hell do I do? I want to cry, scream, rage. I hate this healthcare system so much.

TEN Levels Enter
TEN levels also leave, after having their fill of tea and cakes. C'mon, we're not running the Thunderdome over he-ah.
youtube
b-coli's a creator i knew way in the back-and-back, and when he dropped a comment on one of my episodes, it was, like, "oh, yeah! b-coli! Gotta grab one of his." This might not have been the best of the lot, but it was his first, and that's kind of special, isn't it? It's clearly designed for multiplayer, wiv one player handling the driving, and one the shooting, and two sleds for teams. Unfortunately, that does make for a bit more of a slog going through solo. Still, it's got that first level enthusiasm, and i always love to see that.
youtube
Talked about this one a little when we talked about Platforming Perils, but it is really, really good. Just enough of a challenge to make you sweat a bit, but not really anything that's going to stress a player out. Like in PP, there are a number of classic, HARD(tm) obstacles in a much more forgiving form, and i could see it being good as learner level for that kind of play.
youtube
i don't really get all that invested in how many views any of my episodes get. i've been doing this long enough that if that was a driving force for me, i'd have given up long ago. That being said, sometimes you run into a level that you really want to get eyes on, and the video sits at, like, 4 views forever. i just want to be, like, don't watch it for me, this is actually really cool, you gotta check it out! This is one of those kinds of levels. i was only really familiar wiv yomi-yomi through their association wiv Japan Music Collabo (who you should really check out, they did very solid music in LBP), and one level i played for the old series called "Cooking With Clumsiness." It was, if i may be perfectly honest, kind of shit. Imagine a level completely built wiv no glue, so everything is stacked together like Jenga. It was deeply, deeply frustrating. This one, tho'. It's a bit confusing at the beginning, figuring out just what yomi'd wanted me to do; but once i got the ball rolling, it was hella neat. Tons of little mechanical interactions, which always make my day. There are a few bits where some of the hiragana characters didn't load in, but otherwise, everything seemed to be working no problem. It's all just deeply cool.
youtube
i wish so hard that Zookey had set these up to be rideable wiv one player. i can see how that might have been difficult in LBP1, but still. As it is, they look neat, and i'm sure they're fun, but as a gallery level, it winds up feeling a bit lacklustre. At least they made a The Zipper. i used to love The Zipper when i was younger, and sometimes i have a hard time convincing people who've never experienced one that they actually really do (did? are they all gone now?) exist. i swear they're, like, specifically designed to sound like they're going to come unbolted at any second and kill everyone on board. Fucking loved these babies.
youtube
Eh. We talked about Rock Fire last Friday, and it continues to be Rock Fire today. Shame that.

i suppose i didn't have to play the full slate of these, but the servers were being a bitch, and i really needed to balance the playlist numbers, and, honestly, i was having a good time wiv them. i really liked the conceit of setting up a discrete set of levels that would all teach one particular gameplay bit, that would all tie together in a final level. The elemental theming was an obvious one to go wiv, and i think the levels pull off the presentation side of that quite well. That being said, i do think actual gameplay side of things wound up a bit lacking, and that was a shame. Like, it would have been easy to string together a number of different sections for each level, and really get the player cozy wiv what you were doing, and also just give a more robust experience to a player who might only bop into one of the levels by chance. As it is, unless you were set from the outset on playing the lot, i don't feel like any of the learning temples really sells the rest of the set. Still, it's interesting to see a creator grasping towards a concept that Sumo would eventually make good on wiv the Adventure Maps in LBP3.
--------------------------------------------- So that's our TEN this go about. i've really enjoyed spending some solid time wiv the real old school stuff these last few weeks. As much as i love LBP1, i probably spent the least time wiv its community levels, so this has been an experience. Once we finally pass episode 300, we'll probably starting seeing TENs weigh more heavily on LBP2 and 3 again. Gonna have to put a sticky note on the telly not to give LBP1 too short a shrift. The levels just get banged so hard by translation, and wiv the servers being a whole thing recently... i really, really hope Sumo gets its shite together, 'cause none of this bodes well.

Today I fixed up a steamer/vacuum which will probably go to the second hand store, attempted to clean and revive an old Siemens pre-smart phone.
Got a Fidgie Friends head and took measurements of the eyes and replaced them with something less glarey. (ultimately I think it's simpler repaint the ones they come with to have bigger irises and might make a tutorial for that) - pics tomorrow.
I impulse bought a Beauty Cuties arriving next week- i know i know. Head the size of a football, neck peg 1/6th size so rebodying on a large doll is not only an engineering puzzle but finding a skin tone match from the mostly white disney animator dolls is going to be rough.
But i'm not feeling guilty about still engaging in the doll hobby and bringing in new stuff that's hard to flip though because it's keeping me sane until I can find something else. Turns out something that doesn't engage the shoulders and isn't strenuous is not easy to find. Keeping me busy and using knowledge has it's own value, I'll worry about the clutter later.
I left a repaired VIP pets at the phone box library a kilometer down the road this weekend and she was gone and not trashed the next day. 😁 A trial balloon for rehoming dolls when the local 'toys for tots' type charity takes new in box only.
I'm also planning to visit the upcycling and second hand shop this month and maybe I can offer my services wiping or repairing devices (can't do the fiddly work of screen replacement or anything with my hands but I'm quite happy to do the tedious work of scanning, formatting and installing). Idk.
Lily the dog is feeling better, her arthritis flare up is calming a little though she's still a little stiff in the back legs. She's back to mischief which is a great sign, she had me so worried when the pain was making her lethargic. I've looked at various harnesses in case she needs long term assistance getting up and being carried down stairs.
Turned off anon again. Don't want to end up between proshippers and antis when my argument is for critical creation and 'consumption' (I hate that word but reading, listening watching is a mouthful) not purity culture. I believe horrible things have their place in fiction because life has horrid parts but they have to be well handled not just there as a narrative device or shock value.
I can see a whole spectrum ranging from people protecting healthy representation of real life horrors from blanket censorship to folks who just feel entitled to write whatever they want without thought of its impact because right now they find that as exciting and for some it's exciting in the same way as saying the n word.
How about we have some introspection about how open honest discussion in the bedroom seems so improbable and cringey to many people that they'd rather imagine a mind reading lover who doesn't ask... and if writing fiction to normalise having so called 'awkward' talks that 'interrupt the passion' might work as well as all the folks who've successfully turned the condom from annoying formality into sexy foreplay.
Whether we're examining the widespread misconceptions about torture that spread via fiction and have become part and parcel of the carceral and military systems or having complex conversations about whether to put sexual assault or suicide in a story and how to handle it with the utmost care...
My life has been changed for the better by stories that handled dark subject matter respectfully with the weight it deserves. So my argument isn't pro or anti. It's let's do something constructive: the way we ask people to unlearn racism and learn anti racist thought: how about the guidelines on death by suicide in mass media, how about we ask people to apply that to their fiction and get to tag their work as tw: suicide but with a second tag that it's been checked for that guideline compliance.
I want to open the scope from whether or not AO3 should exist into how we can help eachother engage in more thought-through creations and more importantly real long term support networks for all sorts of survivors with all sorts of messy ugly thoughts.
But any time I write a post it's a whole ordeal to dare press send. I really hope folks know that it's always a 'yes and' or 'I wish this were true but it's debunked/mislabelled'
Just realised I didn't get anything on my to do list for today done. Eeesh. Well, that's tomorrow's problem. 😅

Hello! Sorry I haven't participated in the last couple of SNSs I've been really out of it lately and mentally errywhere, but today I come with gifts of amazing writer goodness!
So I have officially started a Writer of the Month thing and the person that is this month's WotM (dontcrywrite) has an AMAZING story!
Her story is about a female knight that's a member of the LGBTQ+ community, that is inspired by Lord of the Rings and other epic fantasy stories. She goes on an epic quest in which she faces many foes - both physical and inner foes. She comes to terms with things and faces many creatures while doing so.
It is a great story that I am so excited to dig more into at a later date! I am so, so excited about this WIP :D
You don't need to apologize, Hannah, this isn't an obligation or anything. Just a fun, optional event for people to sing their writer friends' praises in. I totally understand people not having the spoons or time to join in ^^
It sounds like there's an amazing story cooking over at @dontcrywrite =D An epic fantasy with a female knight as the main character? Physical and inner foes? Inspired by other awesome stories? Sounds like the makings of a great story right there ^^ I know have a lot fantasy fans, and specifically lgbt+ fantasy fans, who've been looking for some good stories following me. If this sounds like it's up your alley, please go check it out! ^^
Thanks for stopping in, Hannah, I hope you have a day/evening as lovely as you are ^^

Wattpad & Twitch?
I saw the term Writeblr. Am I a Writeblr? Is Writeblr a page or a person? Well, this Jon Snow has been dipping their toe into the wide world of Wattpad. Any other writers on there? Drop your links! I've been reading stories live on Twitch, and it's been a lot of fun! There's a lot of lost talent there, as with all writing spaces, but it definitely needs some help finding air to breathe.
Why did I decide to read Wattpad stories live on Twitch? Read more. (I hope I'm using this feature right.)
About two and a half years back, I decided that it was time to stop dragging my feet and get traditionally published. (Well I try to get trad pubbed.) I knew that Twitter would be the place to promote and Wattpad would generally be the place to share, but I also knew those places would be full of competition. November was coming up so I thought, "why don't I live stream Nano? That'll be fun." It wasn't.
As much as people don't want to read, they definitely don't want to read while an author is writing. Twitter had a very small writing community then and I haven't seen it get any more popular. Which isn't to say it couldn't get popular, but I don't think it works as a way to GET an audience. I could talk about those who've found moderate success, but if I'm going to do that I'd like to talk to them and maybe interview them. Something I've considered putting on my ghost town of a YT channel.
Regardless, I was on Twitch for about a month. I never gained any kind of following and every viewer I saw on those channels were people like me, those who were trying to promote their own writing. So, yes, I could gain followers of other writers, but I couldn't build a brand that way. I had too much experience with similar platforms to think otherwise. If I wanted to get readers, I needed to be on the platform that readers were using.
That lead me to more or less wasting two years on Twitter. I mean, I met some cool people while on there and had good interactions. But was it good for my brand? Did it help me find readers? I'd say a resounding "no" on both parts. The funny thing about Twitter is that it's great at making you think that people care about you. Shit post about a bad day? Hundreds of replies. Link to a blog going into detail about that bad day? Now you're starting to see how little people actually care. At some point I can go into the nuances of my time in the trenches of Twitter, but the point is that it didn't help my writing career.
For me, the biggest problem with Twitter was the same problem with all writer-centric spaces: we are sellers without customers. I like to describe these spaces as towns of vendors. We each have our vendor stall set up, and see lots of people walking. This is great! That means there are customers! Except all of those people walking on the street are also vendors. They're only there to sell their own wares. Yes, there's mutual inflation and reciprocal commerce, but writers make a poor basis for a readership. If someone is selling eggs, they want to sell to bakers, cooks, and the common man, not their fellow ranchers.
Regardless of fame and fortune, I want a readership. I write for myself, yes, but once those words are on the page, I want someone to read those words. I've been writing for over twenty years by this point and during that time my perspective has almost always been, how do I get readers? It's a natural question to ask, but it's driven by selfish desires at its core. I think for the writers of today, the bigger question might need to be, "how do I get people to read?"
The larger problem with readers, is that there aren't that many of them. If there are ten billion eggs in a town of a hundred, most of those eggs are going to rot. And even though most everyone knows that the general public doesn't habitually read, there seems to be this stigma against talking about it. Ever since I started writing, the talking point has always been "people thought comics would destroy the novel, but it didn't."
Okay, so, there are still readers, but could you say that a majority of the people read? Comic books, television, movies, and video games all offer more senses than the written word. They offer experiences that books never can, so why would anyone choose to read a book when they could instead watch that same story play out on screen?
Well, the written word can actually offer things that other media can't. In general, novels are closer to the emotional landscape of the story. Books invite the reader to be a part of the creation process, rather than a passive observer. The lack of a spoken word or portrait lets the reader construct whatever voice or face they desire. Beyond all of that, readers tend to spend more time with a book than any other media. (I'll hold off on a thorough debate of the narrative quality of iterative gameplay loops in video games for the time being, but I'd be hard pressed to find someone who enjoyed Preston Garvey's procedurally generated missions more than any of the designed quests in Fallout 4.) The point is that the written word is not without value, simply that its qualities are losing appreciation.
That's where the idea of reading stories came about, not as a way to increase my visibility, but as a way to increase the number of readers in the world. Opera single handedly created a boom in book sales by doing little more than talking about books. I think that modern entertainment can take interest in reading farther. Podcasts and Twitch streams are filled with content that is actually dead air, but people will tune in and listen. They connect with the player, the streamer, the speaker, and they are content to be apart of somebody else's discovery. A big part of what makes Twitch successful is simply watching these personalities react.
Wattpad is literally an endless supply of new stories that are available for free online. For some, anything that isn't traditionally published is a book not worth anyone's time. But there are hundreds of thousands of people submitting entire novels to literary agents every single year. Statistics alone supports the idea that great books are not going to get the representation they deserve. What are those thousands of unpublished authors supposed to do with their novels, wait patiently for exterior validation?
I don't think there's any shame in self publishing a novel and Wattpad and platforms like it are a perfectly reasonable way of putting out that content. Is there under edited content on Wattpad? Of course, but can anyone in good faith say the same isn't true of all published works? Yes, some writers are just starting out, and they dump their content onto Wattpad, but I don't understand why that's immediately a reason to balk. The writers liked the idea enough to bring it to life. Sure, finding a way to manifest those ideas is complex and difficult, but I honestly believe that a first body of work can still have an unironic entertainment in them.
I've been streaming on Wednesdays from 10am-noon pacific time. I might change that moving forward, but right now it's looking like I'm only going to be adding more time. If you're interested in joining me for story time, check me out on Twitch.

hi, im working on a short story set during the witch trials in scotland and england, (shortly after the reign of james i) and there's going to be characters who've been tortured with "piniwinkies" a type of thumbscrew, which was common at the time. now, the documentaries and things ive read haven't been specific about the results of the injuries from these, but i have a fair basic background in anatomy, and had some of my fingers minorly crushed as a kid so i have a basic idea of the results 1/2
(piniwinkies 2/2) in a very mild form, but i was wondering if you could recommend any sources to describe more specific results of the use of thumbscrews, hand/finger crushing, or if you know of any results of this torture that might not be 'obvious' i know many peoples bones were crushed and they were left with permanent disability, and im familiar with the skin splitting/ tearing from the trauma/ pressure, but i think more accurate knowledge is a better foundation. thank u for the work you do!
Thisis the kind of question that in the old days I’d have gone to @scriptmedic for a check on.
Idon’t know the injury patterns in much more detail then what you’vejust described. Part of the reason for that is this is so rarely usedtoday. Which I’m grateful for, the death of any form of torture isa cause for celebration.
Butit does make finding out the exact effects harder because rather thanmodern medical reports we’ve got what people felt like recording inthe 1500s, or wrote about their slaves in Brazil.
Iknow this torture was used against enslaved people in Brazil upuntil, well horribly recently. Darwin describes it in his journalfrom the Beagle voyage. I’m sure there must be more descriptionsfrom the region but I’m unaware of any more detailed descriptionsin English.
Alot of places seem to have stuck with using twisted string around thethumbs cutting off circulation (a different torture that I describemostly under ‘finger milking’). I’m guessing that’s justbecause it’s simpler than building a thumbscrew device.
Scottquotes a few historical sources from the place and time period ofyour story but they don’t describe the torture itself in muchdetail. They say it occurred. The most detailed account in Scott’sHistory of Torture is this one from Bishop Burnet describingthe torture of two men called Spence and Carstairs:
‘Whenthe torture had its effect on Spence they offered the same oath toCarstairs. And, upon his refusing to take it, they put his thumbs inthe screws; [] and drew them so hard, that as they puthim to extreme torture, so they could not unscrew them, till thesmith that made them was brought with his tools to take them off.’
Innesgives a slightly more detailed quote from the same source, but againthere isn’t a description of injury exactly:
‘thelord chancellor commanded the baile to cause theexecutioner to put him in the torture by applying the thumbscrews onhim, which being done, and he having for the space of an hourcontinued in the agony of torture, the screw being space and spacestretched until he appeared near to faint,’
Mostof the contemporary sources I’ve found simply record thatthumbscrews were used against a particular person and pay moreattention to the details of the victim’s ‘crimes’ then they doto the torture they endured.
Theywere used in Britain against people accused of treachery and inScotland against people accused of witchcraft. In one of the sourcesI’ve got they were used against a child whose mother was accused ofwitchcraft (Alison Balfour of Orkney circa 1596).
Thereare contemporary eyewitnessaccounts, many of which are in English. But I’ve yet to find onethat actually describes the injuries inflicted on victims.
Myinstinct is that this is to do with the reasons these incidents wererecorded in the first place and poor literacy in the period. Just aswe lack accounts of daily life from ordinary women, disabled peopleand ethnic minorities at this time we also lack accounts fromsurvivors of judicial torture. The people recording their abuse weremuch more interested in the alleged crimes committed then thevictim’s health.
Ifound a brief account from one male survivor called Johannes Junius(1628). He says in a letter to his daughter that ‘And then camealso- God in the Highest Heaven have Mercy- the executionerand put the thumbscrews on me, both hands bound together, so that theblood spurted from the nails and everywhere, so that for four weeks Icould not use my hands, as you can see from my writing’(Via the Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology, R H Robbins).
Againthat book has multiple accounts of torture occurring (and some verybiased views about what it could achieve) but little in the way ofsurvivor accounts or description of injury.
Youcould try looking up accounts of Scottish witch trials. A lot ofaccounts survived and some of them are pretty detailed.
ButI think the kind of information you need would beeasier to get from a medic then anyone else.
Sorry I couldn’t be more help.

Learn how to Construct and Scale a Excessive-Efficiency Advertising and marketing Group, In line with Leaders Who've Accomplished It
New Post has been published on http://tiptopreview.com/how-to-build-and-scale-a-high-performance-marketing-team-according-to-leaders-whove-done-it/
Learn how to Construct and Scale a Excessive-Efficiency Advertising and marketing Group, In line with Leaders Who've Accomplished It
In 2020, I began utilizing Headspace.
And, because it seems, so did everybody else.
The meditation app, which was first launched again in 2012, initially generated roughly $30 million in income and, as of 2017, had 40,000 subscribers.
At present, the app has over 2 million customers, and is valued at $320 million dollars. How’s that for progress?
However, when any firm scales that rapidly, it begs the query: Will the enterprise survive, and even thrive underneath its newfound success? Or will it crumble?
Maybe your organization is experiencing related progress, and your marketing group is feeling the rising pains. Or, perhaps what you are promoting is model new, and also you’re targeted on successfully constructing a robust marketing group for the primary time.
Whichever the case, the challenges that come together with constructing or scaling a marketing group could be detrimental to a company if dealt with poorly. Which is why I sat down with marketing leaders at Google, Microsoft, Wistia, Canva, and Typeform to study their ideas for efficiently constructing or scaling a group — so that you just’re prepared when it is your time to develop.
Let’s dive in.
Suggestions for Constructing an Efficient Advertising and marketing Group
1. Rent with variety, fairness, and inclusion in thoughts.
There are numerous advantages to variety within the office – as an illustration, do you know organizations with a various management group have 19% greater income on common than firms with much less various leaders?
Or, how about the truth that diverse teams can solve problems quicker than cognitively related individuals?
Suffice to say, variety issues.
When constructing an efficient marketing group, it is important to think about variety, fairness, and inclusion from the very starting.
As Google’s World Head of SMB Partnerships Advertising and marketing, Elana Chan, instructed me, “Hiring is the most important thing you’ll do as a leader — and that also means you need to think about DEI. It’s easy when we’re running fast to just ask people in our own networks to apply for open positions, but it’s worth it to diversify. Every study and even my own experience has proven that diversification and different points of view are important.”
Chan provides, “It takes longer to hire people who are outside of your natural network, but it’s worth it. You’ll get the right people for the job and also set the right tone across your organization. It’s important to walk the talk when it comes to DEI, not just when it’s convenient.”
While you’re first constructing out your group, you may wish to make sure you incorporate DEI into your recruitment plans. To do that, think about writing inclusive job descriptions, promote roles by means of various channels, and standardize your interview course of.
You may also strive utilizing recruitment expertise like Greenhouse Inclusion to scale back the dangers of unconscious bias when interviewing.
2. Rent people who find themselves hungry sufficient to strive something.
In the event you’re simply beginning out, you do not have limitless price range to rent a slew of entrepreneurs who concentrate on varied marketing actions. As an alternative, you probably solely have the price range for a handful of entrepreneurs — or even perhaps only one.
So … how do you make that one rent rely?
Above all else, Wistia co-founder and CEO Chris Savage believes it is necessary to think about how pushed your first marketing rent is.
He instructed me, “You want to find someone who is extremely hungry, and can make their own things — whether that is video, written content, or audio. Whichever assets your team needs, if you can find someone who can be both the creator and manager of those assets, then you unlock the ability to try things much more easily.”
“At Wistia,” he provides, “I hired a lot of misfits who were so hungry that they were willing to try anything. Maybe on paper it didn’t make sense, but in reality, it was incredible.”
For example, maybe your marketing group has recognized YouTube as a viable alternative to achieve new audiences and convert these customers into leads. If that is the case, think about hiring somebody with expertise creating video — together with a robust need to study rapidly, and take a look at new issues.
three. Rent a marketing buyer expertise (CX) chief.
When requested what probably the most essential early rent on a marketing group is, John Cosley, Senior Director of World Model Advertising and marketing at Microsoft Advertising, instructed me: “Two years ago, I would have said a marketing data scientist — someone who can analyze datasets and help their organizations better understand their customers and identify future opportunities, as well as advise on marketing tactics and analysis methodologies.”
“Fast forward to today,” He provides, “And I would say that the marketing customer experience (CX) leader is the most crucial early hire in scaling a marketing team. Consumer journeys have increasingly become digital and multi-modal and expectations have increased around privacy and trust, personalization, and quality.”
In the event you’re eager about making a buyer expertise technique for what you are promoting, check out Learn how to Outline a Buyer Expertise (CX) Technique.
Finally, a buyer expertise is about placing the client first. As Cosley instructed me, “Shoppers usually tend to worth a model that values them, so it has develop into crucial for manufacturers at present to prioritize the client expertise right through the buying funnel.”
four. Rent early.
Hiring as you are scaling could be a bit like attempting to construct a airplane when you’re flying it.
It may be troublesome and messy to get new hires up-to-speed on the identical time you want them to carry out optimally so your customers do not feel the friction. To reduce these challenges, think about hiring months forward of if you’ll want sure roles crammed.
As Francois Bondiguel, Canva’s World Head of B2B Advertising and marketing & Progress, instructed me, “A big challenge that many face as they scale is getting the organizational structure and strategy right. This includes hiring the right people, and ensuring they have leaders in place to guide them through this transformative phase and help them remove roadblocks so they can move fast.”
“On that note,” Bondiguel provides, “it’s important for key hires to be brought in early to ensure they are properly onboarded prior to projects ramping up. This helps avoid placing unrealistic pressure on new team members as well as the broader group.”
To do that successfully, check out your group’s long-term imaginative and prescient, and brainstorm which function(s) will must be crammed to get your group to the following stage.
5. Use one knowledge set to information your total division.
While you’re first beginning out, I am prepared to wager your lean startup group understands the significance of creating data-based choices … however they probably additionally work in silos.
Perhaps you’ve two content material strategists who concentrate on lead era numbers. Then, maybe you’ve one other social media marketer who focuses on cost-per-acquisition.
The problem? “While you’re working in silos, there are additionally knowledge silos,” Chan tells me. “Which means you can never pull the same number across teams. That’s a mistake. If you start off providing your team with a unified data set, then it’s easier to grow together. It’s much harder to merge data sets later, and then it becomes politics to determine the right numbers to use.”
To repair this, guarantee you’ve a unified system for accumulating and analyzing knowledge even when your group is small. Think about using a CRM to retailer your knowledge in a single place, or making a division dashboard in Google Analytics.
Regardless of the case, it is vital you present your group with a centralized location so your knowledge processes can develop with you as you scale.
6. Deal with buyer retention at first, reasonably than simply buyer acquisition.
While you begin to see your record of shoppers rising, it may be tempting to need extra, extra, extra.
However as a startup, you must watch out. In the event you focus completely on buying new prospects, you overlook certainly one of your strongest weapons — your present prospects.
As Typeform’s VP of Progress, Jim Kim, instructed me, “Many SaaS-based startups … focus exclusively on customer acquisition and tend to neglect customer retention until they see issues with the customer base size growing.”
Kim provides, “By focusing early on efforts to engage and retain the base of customers already acquired, the startup develops a more holistic understanding of the customers they serve, and can gain insights into the things customers really care about that can then be added to the acquisition activities.”
To forestall buyer churn, you may wish to construct out an unimaginable buyer help technique that allows your present prospects to get their wants met. Moreover, think about the way you may present worth past the acquisition, or create a customized buyer expertise so your prospects know you care about them.
As Kim factors out, “It’s an obvious point, but in my experience, it’s hard to remember that retention can actually be a faster way to grow the customer base than new acquisition and usually has a higher marketing ROI, since it’s (generally) cheaper to keep a customer than find a new one.”
Suggestions for Scaling Your Advertising and marketing Group
1. Do not stifle the power of a startup.
As you start to scale, the office inevitably adjustments. Earlier than, conversations occurred casually throughout workplace desks, or when grabbing a cup of espresso — now, there are formal conferences with agendas.
And, when you might beforehand take a look at out a brand new thought with out essentially requiring buy-in from management, now you are anticipated to comply with stricter processes, which limits the experiments you may strive.
And but, one factor should not change as you scale.
As Chan places it, “It’s important not to stifle the energy of a startup. That’s the exciting part of being where you are, and I think the acknowledgement that you’re building the car as you’re driving it is okay — and fun.”
Chan provides, “At Google we have a saying: ‘Operating at the edge of chaos’. If you imagine a frontier, one side is not enough chaos, and the other side is too much chaos. If there’s too much chaos, no one knows what’s happening, and nothing gets done. But if there’s not enough chaos, then there’s no innovation and you’re not moving forward.”
“It’s your job as a leader to operate as closely to this frontier as possible, and I think in a startup that’s even more true.”
While you start to scale, you are going to have to implement extra formal processes. However these processes should not limit your staff from taking dangers, testing out new concepts, and pushing the boundaries of your marketing efforts.
Think about, as you scale, how one can defend that “startup energy” in any respect prices.
2. Stick to what’s working.
As you start to scale, you are in all probability on the lookout for new progress alternatives. And, at this level, it would really feel just like the sky is the restrict — what you are promoting is quickly rising, so why not take some dangers?
However, whereas sure dangers are inevitable, it is not a good suggestion to increase too far past what’s already working.
As Savage instructed me, “In the event you’re a startup that is making progress when it comes to bringing in prospects and getting them to make use of your services or products, then it is easy to suppose, ‘Okay, I’ve one channel that is working … now let’s add a channel on prime of that, and one other channel on prime, and that is how I am going to scale.’ Like, PR is working, why not add paid promoting on prime?”
The error, Savage says, is that there are sometimes one or two channels you find yourself underestimating when it comes to progress potential. In case your content material is performing exceedingly effectively and driving leads for the enterprise, it is not essentially a good suggestion to pivot away from content material. As an alternative, you wish to ask your self — How rather more can we increase with our content material?
“There’s good advice in personal finance,” Savage says, “which states that most wealth is built through a concentration of risk, and it’s maintained through a distribution of risk — so, basically, if you want to become wealthy, you need to take just a few big risks.”
“It’s the same thing when scaling customer acquisition … There are a few big things you can do. It’s very important to go big on the things that are already working.”
Somewhat than investing in social media, digital marketing, video, PR, and running a blog suddenly, think about which channels drive probably the most leads for what you are promoting. These are the channels that acquired you this far, and people are probably the identical channels that may get you even additional if you happen to focus your efforts.
three. Deal with your tradition as a enterprise precedence.
It is easy sufficient to foster and keep a robust tradition if you’re a small group. However, as you scale and increase your group, it could get tougher to guard the tradition that attracted staff to your workplace within the first place.
And whereas tradition may simply sound like a buzzword used to switch beer backyard and yearly ski journeys, it is not.
In actuality, tradition is important to what you are promoting’ success — in actual fact, firms with robust cultures are 1.5X more likely to report average revenue growth of greater than 15% over three years.
As Cosley instructed me: “In any growing organization, the key to success is embracing and honoring the culture to which you aspire. It’s likely what made your company a great place to work and attracted the high-quality talent that is driving your growth.”
Cosley provides, “It isn’t arduous for core values and cultural priorities to erode and even get misplaced throughout growth if that work will not be made a precedence. As you scale, you may wish to suppose and act deliberately about how your tradition grows with you, the way you outline and memorialize it, the way it impacts your hiring and onboarding, the way you prepare your management, and the way you consider efficiency.”
Consider — whether or not or not you’ve got actively fostered it, your organization already has a tradition … it simply won’t be a robust one. And powerful cultures can each entice and retain staff for the long-run, so it is an necessary enterprise initiative to take the time to create one which aligns together with your values and objective.
Moreover, Cosley notes, “Culture is not one-dimensional. You need to consider it across areas such as retention and hiring, diversity and inclusion, and employee engagement. And culture is contagious. Not only does it deliver more positive outcomes and business results, it helps with critical talent retention, and can lower the cost and time to acquire new talent.”
“Treating your culture as a business priority is essential. Without doing so, it could be detrimental to your organization’s potential.”
To make sure your tradition grows together with your group as you scale, check out HubSpot’s Final Information to Firm Tradition.
four. Institutionalize key values in your group.
To construct a robust group tradition, Chan recommends institutionalizing key values.
For example, maybe you worth autonomy, empathy, adaptability, or mental progress. As a pacesetter, it is vital you utilize these values as foundational constructing blocks on which your group can develop.
Chan instructed me, “For me, learning and intellectual curiosity are really important, so I say to my team, ‘You’re responsible for making the person next to you smarter’. And that creates the onus on bringing your own best game because everyone around you is so incredibly talented — so how are you being additive, collaborative, and innovative from within that culture? You owe it to each other to be your best.”
5. Reward what’s proper … and punish what’s mistaken.
As soon as you’ve got recognized the values that matter to your group, it is vital you encourage these values in every of your staff.
When offering efficiency critiques, as an illustration, take the time to establish the place staff have demonstrated key group values, and the place they may nonetheless be missing.
As Savage instructed me, “The way you scale it is, you praise the right stuff and punish the wrong stuff. It’s that simple — most culture is modeled. You need the most senior people to act the way you believe you should be acting, and if you do that, it permeates the building.”
For example, to illustrate you worth risk-taking in your group. If that is the case, you may wish to reward your group after they take dangers, and even reward the failure that may outcome from these dangers.
Alternatively, if you happen to’re in a mode the place you are risk-averse and on the lookout for optimization of processes, you’d wish to reward actions that exhibit threat administration.
6. Rent for the longer term — not simply at present.
Lastly, if you’re scaling, you wish to think about who you may rent at present that may proceed to fulfill the wants of what you are promoting whilst these wants change over time.
For example, after I was first employed at a startup, I used to be employed to create weblog content material. Quick-forward six months, and I used to be moreover tasked with making a podcast, and rising the subscriptions to an electronic mail publication. Because the enterprise scaled, my function modified rapidly. So it is vital you rent with the longer term in-mind.
When requested concerning the largest problem leaders face when scaling, Kim instructed me, “[It’s] the problem to steadiness long-term and short-term hiring. For a bigger, extra established enterprise, scaling a group will not be as difficult. The roles are already clearly outlined, and there’s probably already somebody doing that job. It is easy to rent for a task like this.
“But,” Kim provides, “when the team is trying to scale, the roles may be less clear and transitory. What you think you need today could be wildly different tomorrow. Balancing the needs of today, while keeping an eye out on how things might change in the future is something that’s extremely hard to do.”
Hiring and recruiting is not a simple activity, however to make sure you’re hiring for the longer term, you may wish to take the time to find out somebody’s work ethic, flexibility, and skill to shift roles because the wants change. And, as talked about above, you may wish to discover somebody who’s hungry to be there.
7. Create processes for efficient communication.
As your group scales, it turns into much more necessary to make sure you have processes in-place to make sure truthful, efficient cross-team communication.
For example, maybe you’ve got observed your conferences have develop into alternatives in your most extroverted staff to share their successes, whereas nearly all of your group stays silent.
To fight this, think about creating a gathering agenda or slide deck, so individuals know what they should share, and when.
As Bondiguel places it, “Another challenge is communication. You need to put good processes in place (access to documents, meeting cadence, etc.) to ensure the entire team has all the information and context they need to perform and do their best work. This has never been more important as teams adapt to hybrid work environments.”
And there you’ve it. Whether or not you are formally within the scaling section or nonetheless within the startup section, the following pointers ought to allow you to make sure you’re constructing a robust basis for the longer term.

Episode 017: An Encounter with XXcott
Joining me today is XXcott, a member of the Untamed Collective, and arguably one of the most niche artists covered here so far. There are tracks certainly worth checking out by the man, but I will say I have to share some light criticism here. I enjoyed what I enjoyed, although there is a level of consistency and set style that left me wanting more. The potential is there and granted some of it is older work, but moving forward it would be nice to see a more consistent style. I'm happy to cover XXcott, and I would like to see more from the guy. As always enjoy the interview below!
RH: Mind sharing a bit about yourself for those reading?
X: I am an introvert who enjoys making music, mostly emo rap, but I'm able to do almost any type of rap there is, I practice a lot.
RH: What made you get into rapping? How long have you been doing it?
X: I've been rapping since I turned 12. I was always picked on and bullied in school so I needed a way to fight back I took about 6 months to really study old school rap like Eazy E, krs one, and Eminem. I practiced a lot and when I returned to school all the kids who wanted to fight me, I challenged them to rap battles and just made them look stupid after a while no one really gave me much shit anymore and I actually became popular.
RH: When did you formally start recording and putting out tracks? Were you ever nervous about making your work public?
X: Around 2013 to 2014 but I didn't really like the sound I was going for then or had. Like I've adapted so much since then I wasn't nervous I knew it would immediately be trashed because it was so different at the time but looking back I'm not even sure what I was going for.
RH: How'd you come up with the name XXcott? Have you always run with that name?
X: Too many rappers have the word "lil" in their name. I wanted something different, and I saw that there weren't too many people with the letter x in there name so I took my middle name (scott) and replaced the "s" with an "x" but Becuase of the two "t's" it looked weird so I added an extra "x". No to your second question by the way, I have had so many names since I started. I think I have lost count of all the names I've had but I think something like 8 or 9. The dumbest name I have had is dodge block.
RH: What are your goals for this year?
X: My goals for this year get Untamed bigger as well as myself. Do some features with some people that are bigger than me but in my same niche. I really like what some other artists are doing, it's very inspiring to people like me.
RH: Who would you like to see yourself work with?
X: A lot of people have told me that Yung Van and I would destroy a track and I'm totally up to it. I've actually mentioned us working on a track together, he seemed interested but I never really got a yes or no, but I hope me and him could work together by the end of the year. thebreathingbackwards, me and that guy would kill it as well.
RH: Before we close, I wanted to ask what you hope to see from your music. What's your endgame look like?
X: I want to inspire people like how I was inspired by Peep. That's the ultimate goal and I would love this to pay my bills that's the dream.
RH: Got any final words or shoutouts to share?
X: Yeah man. To anybody reading this, always believe in yourself and be yourself, also shout out to every member of untamed. They are really dope people who've been with me before anybody else was. Also thank you for the interview it meant the world to me bro.
RH: Pleasure's been mine man, thank you for your time.
