Fic Idea Adoption!
i have way too many ideas for fics and i know i won't ever get around to writing them all so i'm putting some ideas up for adoption!! i may or may not write these eventually, but they're too good of ideas to leave sitting in my notes app forever, so i'm releasing them to the void! anyone and everyone is welcome to use them, and feel free to be as ambiguous with the prompts as you want! no particular order but nsfw ideas are at the bottom for anyone who wants to avoid them!
(if you do use any of these, i would love to read the fic!! you definitely do not have to but please feel free to send me anything you write off this list!!)
-john takes rodney to earths moon
-john and rodney find the ancient equivalent of speed. they do Everything
-au where ronon gets earth to repeal dadt bc john tells him it's why he can't be with rodney and ronon goes I Must Fix This (he enlists teyla and lorne and maybe cadman)
-rodney asks ronon to go with john to earth (outcast coda)
-rodney goes on bill nye saves the world after stargate declassification
-evans biggest fear is having to shoot john (and maybe getting a promotion bc of it?) and john finds out
-rodneyâs âtorture too hideous and intimate to recountâ is him being tortured, just for them to realize that torturing his team is a better way to break him
-teyla living out âthe chosen oneâ trope
-what happens to sora after the eye
-au where meredith(female!rodney) comes to atlantis instead of rod and not only is rodney horribly disturbed, heâs furious (and strangely confused) as to why everyone apparently likes him more as a woman
-todd is weirdly obsessed with this strange human he meets, and is determined to get closer to him
-the team is most excited about catching up with todd when they get the confirmation atlantis is going back to pegasus
-everyone complains about rodneyâs moods bc no one can complain about the infinitely worse in every way sheppard bad moods, that make everyone on the base wish they were on a hive ship being eaten by two wraith at once
-au where ronon ends up on athos at the same time the wraith come and he sneaks through the gate with the intention of just sneaking away on the next planet but whoops itâs atlantis (ronon pov)
-rodney keeps a memorial for every single scientist lost in his lab and radek shows it to new scientists who start complaining about rodney not caring and risking their lives
-reaper au whereâs heâs fed the fuck up with these two stupid men who never actually die when theyâre supposed to and itâs more annoying than anything now bc he still needs to show up
-au carson comes to atlantis and is HORRIFIED by becketts retrovirus research and the hoffan drug bc âdoes the hippocratic oath mean NOTHING here???â
-au where rodney canât admit to himself what john means to him, until something happens that brings all the alternate rodneyâs that have lost their johns to atlantis, and they all fall apart when they see john alive, and john and rodney have to have a Conversation (mcshep? maybe ambiguous? idk yet)
-rodney sees john as three separate entities: the Colonel, who is Professional Important Official Man; sheppard, who is his friend/team lead that he hangs out with and goes on missions with; and john, who heâs always seeming to have very intimate moments with that make him question a lot of how he feels
-early days in the city, elizabeth is sick of the marines shitting on the scientists for not being tough and the scientists for shitting on the marines for not being smart so she makes them try to solve a fake crisis from the other side and everyone is like aww shit this is harder than it looks
-that thing where tough men pretend they donât care much about someone but then the person gets hurt and Tough Guy go a little feral and then holds them close and whisper pet names (sweetheart, baby, darling, etc) but itâs john and/or ronon after rodney gets injured
-the more important something is to john, the harder it is for him to talk about it, and rodney starts to realize how hard it is for john to talk about what rodney means to him
-a bunch of au sheppards get brought to atlantis and one on them is terrified of flying
-rodney has always said biology was beneath him, but then ford almost died, and was⌠different, from the wraith. and rodney knew he had to find a way to help ford, maybe find a way to fix his mental problems while keeping the physical benefits. rodney and carson find a way to save ford and sheppard is so thankful he kisses them both
nsfw ideas:
-ronon suggests some planets for trading when they get low on supplies that have an interesting trade system. it seems too good to be true and they wonder why telya hasn't taken them until they find out that they trade goods for sex
-au where john is hired as a spy for atlantis and he seduces people in pegasus to get intel for the city
-sometimes rodney just grabs john (by the hair, throat, back of the neck, chin, etc) and asks who he belongs to and john instantly melts
-rodney decides to be a tease on a mission and teyla and ronon think mckay is just really pissing sheppard off when he pulls mckay away for âprivacyâ but really heâs just super horny and wants to fuck (or, teyla and ronon donât realize that their fighting is foreplay)
#and to think this isn't even 1/4 of that list#god it's insane lmao#i have too many ideas about this damn show#oh well#there can never be too many sga fics#fic ideas#fic prompts#fic suggestions#sga#stargate atlantis#idk how to tag this lmao#fic idea adoption#should i do one of these with my song based fic ideas#i have an entire playlist of songs that i could write fics about#and i doubt i'll write most of them#maybe i will if people want it idk

fic
Accepting a Complement by WonkyElk | 1k, g, mcshep He wasnât sure exactly when he and Sheppard had become âthose twoâ or âyou twoâ or âthat pairâ to so many people. But, now that the phrase had jumped up and bit him, so to speak, he was very aware that he had heard it too many times to count. exposed by dedkake | 1k, m, mcshep Two moments in time: then and now Or, No matter the fact that his subconscious has been keeping the score for him, itâs clear as day what it all adds up to. Missing by Goddess47 | <1k, t, mcshep "Stupid gate!" Rodney whined. "Come on! You should work!" He banged a fist on the inside of the DHD. Transporters: or Itâs All Fun and Games Until Someone Sets Your DNA to âShuffleâ by WonkyElk | 2k, t, mcshep Elizabeth had been a little dazzled by the transporter technology at the start - it was difficult not to be - but there was so much to do, and to think about, that they had quickly been downgraded in her consciousness to little more than remarkably efficient elevators. Constantly tripping over her own child-like wonder would hardly have been conducive to a strong and effective leadership. Nowadays, the only time that they really registered as anything out of the ordinary was when they went wrong. When the Moon Hits Your Eye by portlandwithyou | <1k, g, mcshep Sheppard and McKay are stranded on a distant beach. Exploring by Goddess47 | <1k, t, mcshep Pegasus was more black and white than gray, John quickly learned. Youâve been the North Star (where the lightâs from) by puddlejumperpilot | 2k, t, rodney / john /radek Rodney never thought he'd be dating two people at the same time. aka Rodney muses over his partners and how exactly they ended up there. Further Adventures in Maple Syrup by WonkyElk | 2k, t, mcshep John woke to a high bright sun battering its rays insistently through the window, the ungentle pouncing of cats, and the clatter of a frantic vampire. Of snakes and safe harbours by Mas_Pebbles_Sharp | <1k, m, multi Elizabeth scratches a couple of itches. short notice by dedkake | <1k, t, ronon / teyla / rodney / john Two week suspension from active duty. Mandatory leave for mental health; off base. Follow-up required. or, instead of splitting up during Brain Storm, the team take a trip to the mainland together. a two nap kind of day by dedkake | <1k, g, mcshep The blankets shift violently, parting to reveal Johnâs impressive bedhead, rumpled uniform, and colossal scowl. âIâm tired.â or, John's found a new place to hide out. Helping Hands by halestrom | 2k, g, gen Post-Trio, Rodney needs some help even if asking for help is the last thing he wants to do. Thankfully, he doesn't need to ask at all. Two Truths and One Lie by melagan | 2k, g, mcshep During an off-world ceremony, AR-1 is asked to reveal one lie each. Backup Plans by LogicGunn | 4k, g, gen For TwoTales, who had thoughts about a Laura Cadman and Rodney McKay High School Tap Dancing Competition AU.
Opposite to Blue by WonkyElk | 1k, g, mcshep The first time that John had met Rodney McKay he had been brightly, regrettably, orange. Searching for Sleep by Tazmy | <1k, g, gen Rodneyâs on day 14 of little sleep. Ronon has a plan. Can be read as either Rodney & Ronon or as Rodney/Ronon. Your choice. 200 words for the SGA server birthday bash Youâre the reason I donât want the world to end by puddlejumperpilot | 7k, t, mcshep Two missing scenes from the second episode of each season. aka McShep over the years. Stop Talking! by Tazmy | 26k, t, multi Rodney knew better than to mess with the Ancient counseling device, but talking to a hologram version of Heightmeyer helped him feel better. Now, drugged by the device, Rodney is compelled to share his innermost secrets to those nearby, and his thoughts are much darker than anyone expected. Response to birthday bash prompt. There are two ways this can go: (1) Rodney must both share his feelings for John and admit the truth about his darkest thoughts or (2) The device will destroy him. Operation Retrieve Johnâs Heart by Tazmy | <1k, g, mcshep John's always been lonely. Two chapter story, each chapter a double drabble for the SGA fanart server birthday bash! Keeping Secrets by Goddess47 | <1k, t, mcshep It wasn't the sort of talent that one showed off, Chuck had learned as a small child. It was something personal, secret. Doctorâs Orders by Goddess47 | <1k, t, mcshep "You needed to abstain from coffee!" Carson said firmly. "Dinna you understand?" There was Only One⌠Waitâ Two Beds? by pinkoptics | 2k, g, mcshep A bit of silly fun at this tropeâs expense. Dear prompter, I hope you like it! The one where Rodney freaks out that there are two beds instead of one.
The Second Name by scifi_dancer | <1k, g, mcshep How the hell had Rodney gotten the printout? Chuckâs Intergalactic Delivery Service and Confessional, A 5+1 Fic by MalihiniMoon and Tazmy | 4k, t, mcshep A 5+1 fic. once again, mcshep fic recs
(I don't remember which "even more" we're on and am too lazy to check)
I've been doing a lot of rereading stuff from my bookmarks lately, but here are some I've collected in the past month and a half or so!
1)
Cool Hand Luke by fiercelydreamed | ~1.5k, rated E
Excerpt from an IM conversation earlier today: fiercelydreamed: this is the weirdest shit i have ever googled for a pwp fiercelydreamed: only in sga fandom fiercelydreamed: would you ever google "tens unit voltage," "prosthesis," "chemical composition of semen," and "factorial function" all for a fic under 2000 words
Basically: John loses a hand. Rodney builds him a better one. It works for both of them. Ohhhh this is just good. It's hot, yeah, but it's also just so perfectly right in that shivery way that a good idea can be, where you just know that this is how it would go?
2)
How Many by cathalin | ~700, rated T
Rodney actually does know how many times John's almost died.
I don't generally think to rec fics of this length, but this had me wanting to SCREAM with how perfect it was. The amount of FEELINGS that are packed into this small amount of words, just, holy shit. I'm a sucker for stuff about the way their experiences have changed them, hurt them, made them frightened and desperate and clinging to each other, and this does that so wonderfully and satisfyingly, I loved it.
3)
Top of the List by Helenish | ~2.6k, rated E
Rodney tries hard.
"So I like it a little rough," Sheppard said. "Sometimes."
There's, I think, a nice little sub-genre of McShep which is "Rodney Finds Out Something About John" (my own butterfly tattoo fic being a personal entry into that canon) which I think is just wonderful because of who Rodney is, as a character. He's stubborn and obsessive and analytical, and pretty much canonically fascinated by John, so of course Finding Something Out About John will make him spin his mental gears till he goes nuts with it in wonderful, tension-breaking ways. Along with that, the idea of John liking it rough, wanting to be thrown around or smacked around is, like super hot in that way that I think only fanfic can be hot, where the sexiness comes from the verisimilitude; with the accuracy of the characterization layered on top of these appealing textual descriptions of sex acts. Anyway!!! This is just very good.
4)
Entanglements by Barb G | not rated but Iâd give it an M, ~8k
John falls down, and gets rescued. One is worse than the other.
This is very untagged, I actually only found it due to clicking into a remix of it (which was also good), but anyway! Let me just state plainly here that I have a real thing for fics about John and Rodney having to survive torture and/or imprisonment together. Call me a romantic! I love beautiful descriptions of suffering and the unspoken comfort that they can give to each other just by being there, just because of that immense amount of trust that they share. I love John surrendering his body to abuse because he secretly thinks he deserves it, and doing it without a second thought because he thinks it will keep Rodney safe.
5)
Ride Into the Sun by Cesare | ~14k, rated E
John's fantasies do a lot for him: they restore his sense of control, express his defiance, celebrate his victories, and connect him with feelings he can't access other ways. He never thought they'd get him what he wants.
God this is just fucking brilliant, masterful characterization for John. The inner voice is absolutely perfect, and the explanation for his fantasies, the way heâs conceptualized his own desires, his own submission, in a way that gives him back control over the horrible things that happen to him is justâŚoh itâs amazing, I love it so so much. And the resolution with Rodney is so good, so incredibly satisfying after what has gone on before in the story!! Just amazing. Iâve read this many many times before but every time I reread it Iâm floored by how good it is.

20 questions for writers! Thanks @sga-owns-my-soul @frostysfrenzy
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
5 works
2. What's your total ao3 word count?
116,241, mostly between the two novels.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Stargate SG1 and Atlantis, MCU Avengers Steve Rogers, (unpublished: Saving Hope, Daredevil, Supernatural).
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
The there are only 5 on Ao3 so far đ
You and Me (Stargate SG-1, Daniel Jackson x gn reader, đ)
What was Lost (Marvel, Steve Rogers x OFC đ)
Fetish (Captain America, Steve x Peggy)
Worlds Colliding (Stargate SG-1, Sam x Martouf)
Capturing Samantha (Stargate SG-1, Sam x Martouf)
5. Do you respond to comments?
YESSS!! I live for comments, and reblogs, all the interactions!!!
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
You and me is the angstiest in general. It gets very emotionally dark.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
What was Lost has the happiest ending so far... but it may be overtaken by You and Me, we'll have to wait and see đ
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I was once told my mystery was too mysterious đ¤Ł
9. Do you write smut?
Sort of, I write romance đ so it's bound to happen đ
Okay, yes. Yes, I do.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've ever written?
Not yet, never say never.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
We all have, everyone who's been on Ao3 for a while. Don't steal my shit 𤏠I'm pretty mad about chatGPT scraping everyone's works. Disgusting bunch of thieves!!!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope! I think most writing loses its essence in translation.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic?
Yes! It was so much fun!!!
14. What's your all time favourite ship?
Probably Daniel/Sha're, or Daniel/Vala (Stargate) but also partial to Steve/Nat (MCU), and Matt/Elektra (Daredevil). But X reader fics are the most fun you can have đ
15. What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have a dirty Daredevil X reader languishing in my wips. Might get around to it when I watch the new season.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Character voices and attentions to detail. People usually comment on those things. I'm also good at bringing the Dramaâ˘ď¸. There may be some screaming, crying and throwing up đ
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Keeping it short and sweet, my slow burns really are slow burns. I have to pay specific attention to pacing and linking scenes well. I do way too much Researchâ˘ď¸ .
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I would if I had a native language speaker to proof read it for me.
As a reader I find it annoying if I have to keep moving back to the chapter notes to check translations. It interrupts the flow.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
The X-files but I was a kid, does that count? Supernatural is probably more relevant.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
Honestly, I love my two novels, I'm pretty attached to them 𼰠they've been such a journey, personally and in terms of developing my writing skills.
tagging @i-am-morrigans-apprentice @jgem87 @darsynia @figsandfandoms @rightbrainboredom @riverageleis @sarcasticsciencefictionwriter @cuillere @courtforshort15 and anyone else who's interested!

Thank you, @wonkyelk, for the tag :)
How many works do you have on AO3?
289.
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
764 464.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Right now mostly SGA, but other fandoms I've written for in the last year or so include Firefly, SG1, The Old Guard, some tiny/non-existent fandom stuff (Echoes, Who is Erin Carter, etc), some original fiction. Various one-offs (Hot Fuzz, ST:PIC).
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
The Perfect Bride (SGA)
A Uniquely Dangerous Opportunity (SGA/The Old Guard)
Season's Greetings (SGA)
How to Succeed at Corporate Sabotage in Five and a Half Easy Steps (SGA) [note - I love this title so much]
In the Wind (SGA/The Old Guard)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I dooooooo! I love comments, they make me so happy, so I want to make sure the commenter knows that. And sometimes there's a nice chat that happens too, so that's exciting!
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
For SGA, it's Failsafe (still one of my favourite things I've ever written). For Firefly, I think it's Assessment, at least, based on the comments I got when I first posted it to...oh gosh, I think it was to a listserv and then the Firefly's Glow old archive. For SG1, it's Grey Skies, Ashen Ground (I also love this fic so much).
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I don't know. I do write a lot of pretty happy endings, and a lot of humour, so it's hard to say.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Generally, no. I do remember getting a bit of snark about a few things I've written over the years, but that was way back pre-LJ.
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I dooooooooo. I think I write a fair amount of E-rated stuff (PWPs and otherwise). What kind - I guess mostly m/m. My most common smut-related tags are blow jobs, dubious consent, and getting together. So I guess I write a lot of dubious consent oral sex romance or something :')
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Sometimes! Craziest one is probably Travel Light (SGA/The Littlest Hobo) (we need more dogs in Stargate, okay??) (yes, this is a niche fic with a small audience, but it is deeply hilarious to me). Or maybe Village of the Y-arrrggg (Anna and the Apocalypse/Hot Fuzz). I love both of these fics so much.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I have no idea!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I don't think so.
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
Heck yes, I have! Quite a bit over the years, and more recently a couple with @wonkyelk and four or five with @chaos-monkeyy. It is so fun!!!!
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
I tend to prefer characters over ships (I will ship that favourite character will alllllllll kinds of people), but probably if I had to pick, I'd say Jayne/Simon (Firefly), just because I think they're the most frequent ship I've written.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
I don't know, really. I tend to forget about my WIPs and then find them again later and remember.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I write humour pretty well! And I think I'm pretty good at writing porn. Maybe. I don't know. I can and will make train puns (shock, gasp, surprise).
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I can't sustain long stories. Most of my stuff falls in the 2000-5000 range, and the longest thing I ever wrote was just shy of 10 000 words. I just don't have the capacity to write long stuff. Also, if I don't get most of a fic down in a sitting or two, I'm unlikely to ever finish it.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I'm pretty sure I've never done this. Can't say I have any profound thoughts on it.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
OZ.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
This one is too hard. And whoops, it turns out I've already mentioned a bunch of stuff I like. I guess I also really like the way Pieces Tossed Aside (Firefly) worked out (I had to think about a few different things for that one), and also, Of winsome mood and disposition (SGA) (it made me laugh so much to write this).
no pressure tagging, if you're into it: @chaniis-atlantis, @cuillere, @cordeliaperry, @chaos-monkeyy, @colonelshepparrrrd, @dedkake, @sparrowsarus

Okay. Babe. My mutual in closest proximity. Talk to me about Stargate Atlantis pls.
OHMYGOD. okay. okay. i accidentally wrote you an essay. i'm not sure how much of it is coherent. i love u thank u for sending me this it made my night. <3
disclaimer: i'm so new. many people know much more than i do. and i still have about a season and a half left; i've been watching with a bestie so i've been forced to pace myself more than i would otherwise.
plot/premise: SGA is a spinoff of a movie (Stargate) and another show (Stargate SG-1). i was told, repeatedly, to watch the others first, but i'm impatient...i was a little confused but i got the gist eventually. ANYWAY. it's like...the lost city of atlantis has been located, except it's in another galaxy, and a group of scientists and military fools are going there for an expedition to like...explore/learn things? they're kind of in space, but it doesn't feel like that too muchâby my standards, at least, and i am a known hater of media that takes place entirely in space. there's a team, they're a family, they get into Situations...u know the drill.
why i, specifically, enjoy the show:
john sheppard. JOHN. SHEPPARD. babe, i have not been this down bad for a character since DEREK HALE. im NOT KIDDING. i wanted to say more about him but i don't feel qualified enough to have my own thoughts yet. (or at least, i still feel shy about saying them out loud on the internet. i can and will go on and on about him in private, though.)
i did go into this for john sheppard. i will fully admit that. (i had a few mutuals who'd put him on my dash every so often and i could just tell he was gonna do me in.) HOWEVER. i am falling in love with nearly every single character. the character development is genuinely some of the best i've seen, and the way the team gradually turns into family who have each others' backs no matter what?? I'M EATING IT UP. (here is a video of the team, i CANNOT talk about each of them individually, i'd be here all night.)
john and rodney's dynamic is DELICIOUS. they're both obnoxiously intelligent (and they're both obnoxious, but in different ways). they annoy each other. they delight in each other's presence. they're teammates. they're best friends. they keep each other alive they'd do anything for each other they know each other better than they know themselves. (AND I KNOW I'M ONLY SCRATCHING THE SURFACE OF IT MYSELF, BECAUSE I HAVEN'T EVEN FINISHED THE SHOW.......)(here is a video bc there's no way my words are gonna do it justice.)(also here are more words.)
the fic is SO good, too, and it's been especially fun bc the authors of a lot of my fav sterek fics had also written for sga back in the day, and getting to read stuff from them that i hadn't read yet....aughhhh. i love fandom.
the dialogue is hilarious, the situations are WILD (cannot tell you how many times i've been like WHO WAS IN THE WRITERS ROOM HOW DID THEY COME UP WITH THIS), and generally i'm just having such a great time.
in conclusion (bc i'm cutting myself off here), i'm never really sure whether i should recommend things to people or not bc my own tastes are basically just whatever happens to hit the unpredictable switch in my brain, but GENUINELY it's just SO FUN. i'm having the time of my life. i cannot shut up about it. <3
#i meant to answer this in a quicker time frame but sometimes hyperfixation medias are so hard to talk about...#it's consuming my thoughts it's all i post about but if someone asks me about it i suddenly have never had a single thought in my life??#anyway. i really don't think i did sga justice here but if u ever watch it....or if u ever want to know more...PLS. I AM ALWAYS HERE.#also kate argent is in it briefly. that threw me for a fucking LOOP. can't believe she's canonically tortured two of my best guys.#kitkatpancakestack#bestie mail <3

Thank you @ctrsara for the tag! I'm pretty sure I've done this one before but why not! \o/
How many works do you have on AO3?
96! But I have a lot of stuff on LJ that I never moved over to A03 and I recently discovered I put up a few fics on FF.net that I never moved over either, haha.
Whatâs your total AO3 word count?
1,249,703!
What fandoms do you write for?
In my fanfic career, I have written: Marvel Comics, X-Men, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Supernatural, Torchwood, Stargate Atlantis, Marvel (Irondad), Heartstopper and a few misc ones in other fandoms.
I recently found a Boy Meets World fic I wrote like 15 years ago, so that's fun. Have no memory of writing it!
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Five Time Faculty Members Had to Call Peter's Emergency Contact + One Time He Shows Up Anyway
Five Times Tony Stark's Fabled Intern Just Showed Up + One Time He Was Invited
The Hero of Our Own Story
There Is Always One Last Light To Turn Out
For We Are Bound by Symmetry
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes, all of them! It's usually just a thank you <3 but I will talk to people if they talk back.
Whatâs the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Hm, I think it's If You Find That You Feel Lost, I'll Be Your Ticket Back.
Whatâs the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
lol, I mean, all of them end pretty hopeful, yeah? That's the best I can do.
Do you get hate on fics?
On a few of them, yeah. People can think what they want, I know sometimes I walk a thin line when it comes to the "happy" bits or I sometimes make characters a little more unlikeable (I mean I consider it more realistic) but I sometimes get push back on it. Usually it's when I'm doing Irondad and they are like aren't father/son within seconds of seeing each other, lol. Opps, sorry I like realism in my superhero fics!
On Edge of Your Name, some people found Charlie unrealistic but I didn't think so at all.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yes! Slash mostly but I've done het and femslash in the past.
Do you write crossovers? Whatâs the craziest one youâve written?
Not really! Maybe one day I'll consider it
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
A looooooooong time ago, someone poached a SGA fic I wrote and posted in, get this, in an LJ community I posted it in originally, lol.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
YES! Oh my god I was so excited, two fics of mine are in RUSSIAN. HOW COOL?
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! Me and @royalhearthuff did a chapter in their, Through The Years Narlie fic and me and @brbrbeatrice are hovering around a Narlie colab right now too. <333333
I'm also open to collabs!
Whatâs your all time favorite ship?
Ugh, so hard to answer this because I have so, so many OTPs, lol. I mean McShep is always at the top of my heart, but Narlie since it's fucking canon and oh yeah Ineffable Husbands will never not make my 12 year old heart beat faster.
Whatâs a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Hm, there are a few. I've got an Irondad that's a Tony presumed dead that I'd like to get finished but it's so hard to keep Tony Stark presumed dead and not escape wherever he's at.
I've got a Charlie at uni fic that I really want to eventually finish but I lose steam on it everytime I try!
What are your writing strengths?
I think I can do dialogue pretty well at this point, I think I've mastered the flow of it.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Everything else? Ha.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I don't, lmao. I mean, I have but it's only small things that I can google.
First fandom you wrote for?
I think it was honestly something like Rainbow Brite or X-Men comics, to be honest. I also may have written self insert Power Ranger fics and Inspector Gadget lol oh and Captain Planet.
Don't judge me lol I was writing fic before I really understood what I was writing. I just liked adding myself into adventures with my favorite characters!
Favorite fic youâve ever written?
I dunno, it's so hard to pick sometimes. I really love my SGA Disaster It Strikes On a Daily Bases, for Irondad it's always Just An Intern and I think I'm obsessed with my Narlie, And You Know For Me It's Always You.
And I tag whomever wants to do this because tagging people gives me anxiety.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
tagged by @rmd-writes. Thank you!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
31 (apparently? seriously? it doesn't feel like that many)
2. Whatâs your total AO3 word count?
451,541 - which is an oddly pleasing number.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
911 Lonestar
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Long Story Short (5 Ways Carlos's Family Could Have Met TK + 1 he met TK's)
a home isn't always the house we live in (Judd's POV on TK and Carlos)
It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes, or bags! (Christmas (and Hanukkah) fic)
Always Wear Your Invisible Crown (high school reunion fic - also one of the only stories I've ever written from TK's POV)
When the sun came up you were looking at me (S2 Interstitials)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I love comments, and I try hard to respond to all of them.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don't think I've written anything with an ambiguous ending, or an angsty ending. Although @wtfuckevenknows says the end of Knave 3 made her cry (it has a happy ending, I promise. But, apparently it's happy with a side of emotion?)
7. Whatâs the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
All of them. No really. All of them.
I guess maybe It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes, or bags! has the schmoopiest ending.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Only once so far. [fingers crossed, knock on wood] Not looking forward to more.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yes. It took a while, but I got there.
10. Do you write crossovers? Whatâs the craziest one youâve written?
I haven't ever written a crossover! I do kind of want to do a 911/Lonestar crossover, but that is just so many characters.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not as far as I'm aware
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not a posted one. I have co-written with a friend before for The Old Guard, but we never actually finished and posted it.
14. Whatâs your all time favorite ship?
Nope, nope, nope. I have been around waaaay too long to pick a favorite. I can give you a historical selection.
Fraser/Ray K (Due South), McKay/Sheppard (SGA), Arthur/Merlin (Merlin), Arthur/Eames (Inception), Buck/Eddie (911), TK/Carlos (Lonestar), and a lot of others unnamed
15. Whatâs a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
a bunch of them. I do tend to cannibalize though, and bits of abandoned fics end up in other places.
16. What are your writing strengths?
dialogue? descriptions of internal emotional processing (?) someone else tell me.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I'm going to say plot, and you are all going to laugh at me after 150K of Knave-verse. But, honestly, plot.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I've included words here and there of Spanish, but it's not one of my languages so I'm always hesitant to try and be colloquial.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Published? Lonestar. Unpublished? Merlin
20. Favorite fic youâve written?
Knave 2 (The Knave of Hearts . . . he said he'd steal no more). I think that's easily the best thing I've ever written.
tagging @freneticfloetry, @cha-melodius, @bonheur-cafe, and @carlos-in-glasses in return

20 questions for fanfic writers!
Tagged by @aintgonnatakethis đ
How many works do you have on AO3? 46
What's your total AO3 word count? 213 147
What fandoms do you write for? My big two are stargate (any and all. Mostly sg1 and sga though) and csi. Though my ao3 says my most posted fandoms are smallville and spn, and that's technically correct, from the svnatural crossovers. There's a couple other shows thrown in there too but we won't get into my whole writing history and future rn
Top 5 fics by kudos:
The thing about a fantasy (csi, G, CathRick)
Beautiful disaster (sga, sg1, T, Gen.)
Keep me safe (sg1, G, Sam/Daniel)
Take me back into your arms (sg1, T, Sam/Daniel)
Morning person (sg1, G, sam & daniel)
Do you respond to comments? Not always, but no that if you've left a nice comment I'm grinning like an idiot each and every time I read it. I love them.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I feel like I don't write a ton of angsty ending so I might have to say so much for normal (also my 6th fic by kudos). It ends basically how spn starts, so yeah.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Oh so many but I think the ultimate one has to be take me back into your arms. Nothing like a reunion after coming back to this mortal coil
Do you get any hate on fics? Thankfully no (knock on wood)
Do you write smut? No siree. Not my wheelhouse
Craziest crossover? I basically started by writing crossovers, but the wackiest is definitely the Jason Teague & Dean Winchester are twins fic. Thanks @morrison-the-ii once again
Have you ever had a fic stolen? I hope not!
Have you ever had a fic translated? Not to my knowledge, but I'd allow it!
Have you ever co written a fic? I've bounced ideas with various people, but never actually wrote with anybody
All time favourite ship? I'm not sure tbh. My unhinged svnatural SamLois era was very fun and am still much a fan of Sam/Daniel fics. But one it always seems to come back to writing for me is the brotp between Sara and Nick. They're such a great dynamic to work with and I truly missed writing all csi but especially them so much. Bonus answer Clois, but I don't think I've wrote anything for them. Or at least not anything beyond a ficlet
What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I have this saving hope doc I've had for over a year that was meant to be a role reversal of the series finale (meaning its Alex because I like to be even more depressing apparently). The doc is still empty to this day and I honestly think itll stay that way but let's be real nobody wants that anyway I know I really don't đ. Could also say csi road trip fic but I'm damned and determined to write that one
What are your writing strengths? Characters and dialogue. I love characters and I always feel like I have a good grasp on each of them and can keep them in character as much as possible
What are your writing weaknesses? Any kind of creative descriptors.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language? I doubt I'd personally try it, but I mean if you want to, I don't see a reason not to
First fandom you wrote in? First fic I ever started was Resurfacing (csi, M, gen.) First fic I posted however was the original version of hear it from me (svnatural, G; Clois & Sam)
Favourite fic you've written? Do you know how hard this is? I might have to go with special occasion (svnatural, G; gen.) Just because of how excited I was for that idea combining the best of both worlds. But another one I'm proud of for some reason is just maybe (we'll be alright) (sgu, G; TJ/Young). I don't often feel great about my scene setting and emotion but I like to think I hit the nail on the head with that one
Tagging (no pressure): @sga-owns-my-soul @jencsi @ilkkawhat and @space-helen
But please also feel free to jump on if you see this!
#tag games#sorry for tagging the same people in every writing game i just. can not keep straight who writes and who doesn't

tagged by @chaos-monkeyy and @cordeliaperry for what i didn't initially realise were two separate ask memes đ thank you đ
i'm gonna merge them both into one big list so this is going to be enormous, sorry in advance đđđ edit: it's horrifyingly big, i had to hide it behind the cut for everyone's good
1. when did you post your first ever fanfic?
july of 2020
2. first character you wrote for:
jaskier XD who i have since written. lots. for. đ
3. main character(s) youâre currently writing for:
i feel very unequipped to answer this one XD
4. character(s) you havenât written about before but plan on writing about soon:
....same with this one XD i have a couple of thronebreaker wips and haven't written for that before so let's go with that
5. fandom(s) youâre currently writing for:
picture me looking awkwardly between my quiet ao3 and my tangled jungle of google docs in bafflement
6. platonic pairing(s) you currently write for:
i simply Have Not done that XDD đ i don't tend to read/watch a lot of romance-heavy stuff outside of fanfic and so fic is basically my one outrageously sappy outlet and i take full advantage of that
7. romantic pairing(s) you currently write for:
...see previous fandom question đ
8. your top 3 tags on AO3 (if you post your works on AO3):
watersports
omorashi
wetting
can we all just pretend we're shocked? XD
9. your current platform where you post your works
'tis i
10. snippet of the wip youâre currently working on:
oh no, the thing i'm bad at đ have a unpolished bit of radskier from right at the beginning of that free-use fic
He felt loose and liquid. Something in the wine, maybe. Or, more likely, in the time spent beforehand, with Radovid laying him down on the cushioned table and readying him. Loops of soft rope, wrapped to display rather than confine and, finally, a band of thin leather wrapped around the base of his cock, enchanted so his own pleasure didnât get the better of him too early.
meme the second:
How many works do you have on AO3?
i've got 15
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
47,634
3. What fandoms do you write for?
so far i've only written for the witcher and sga but who knows what the future holds đ
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
poached, reunion, got you on my mind, hold that thought, distractions
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
oh absolutely every time!! putting fic out there is vulnerable and terrifying and it means the world to me when someone takes the time to comment đ and, having been on the other side of it, i know how nerve-racking it can be to leave a comment đ so even if it takes me ages, i like to say something back and let them know they're appreciated
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
oh god XD maybe this one? i'm a sappy fuck
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
....pretty much all the others XDD due to aforementioned sappy fuckiness
8. Do you get hate on fics?
i don't think so, at least, no one's ever put any where i could see it. i think i tend to fly pretty under the radar in fandom spaces and i normally stay in my nice damp niche
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
fuck yeah đđ although i often lean more into kink than outright smut đ¤ it's all horny shit, which is what counts XD
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
i haven't yet!! maybe someday, although i think i lean more fusion than crossover (disclaimer: i have written neither XD)
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not as far as i know
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
that's another no
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
i have not, i'm not sure i'd be any good at that XD
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
i have never and could never be able to choose đ
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
hmmm, i try to leave my options open and never fully count out a fic đ¤ but there's more than one i kind of lost confidence in and am now too scared to open the google doc for đ sigh
16. What are your writing strengths?
i don't think i can answer that
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
i sort of mentioned this before but i think a lack of confidence? sometimes, often, i talk myself out of a fic before i've really given it a try, or i get too bogged down in self-doubt and end up struggling to get any of the actual writing done. double sigh
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
hmm, it's never really come up for me. i would say, unless it's a fictional language or a super common, easily translatable phrase i'd probably avoid outright writing in another language unless i could check it with a native speaker. just in case đ
19. First fandom you wrote for?
the witcher <3
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
i think i'm a little biased towards my first published fic? just because it was huge for me to finish and post something and i'm still amazed i pulled it off XDđđ

Thanks for the tag @massharp1971!
How many works do you have on AO3? 34
What's your total AO3 word count? 70,187
What fandoms do you write for? Currently, Top Gun: Maverick (in progress), Stargate Atlantis, a little SG-1, and MASH. Also wrote one thing for Good Omens and will probably not revisit. Oh, I also forgot I wrote a crossover SGA/Person of Interest fic.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos? The McMurdo Chess Club (SGA, McShep) I would never dare (Good Omens, Ineffable Husbands) Autopilot (SGA, McShep) Dear Rodney (SGA, McShep) Class A's (MASH, Hunnihawk)
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? I always try to because I personally love it when people reply to my comments :)
What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? This was actually difficult to choose, but I think There's no one I would rather be lying beside (Stargate, Sam/Janet). Runners up are Dear John (but Dear Rodney fixes the ending) and I've bit my tongue too long to hide the blood I'm covered in.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Gosh, so many of them are so happy because I love happy endings. I'm gonna go with You've done a number on me.
Do you get hate on fics? Nope.
Do you write smut? If so what kind? Yes. I guess it's mostly happy people getting to have many orgasms? Sometimes a little kinky, usually not very.
Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? Once. SGA/POI for the angstiest crack I could think of - they have the same name and can't have the people they love, but they understand each other. I've bit my tongue too long to hide the blood I'm covered in
Have you ever had a fic stolen? That's a thing that happens? I'm gonna go with no.
Have you ever had a fic translated? No, but that would be very neat.
Have you ever cowritten a fic before? No. Could be fun.
What's your all-time favourite ship? That's a ridiculously hard question. Might be Shoot (Root/Shaw, POI).
What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? My super sad fic where John dies while Rodney is on Earth trying to do the whole normal thing with Jennifer.
What are your writing strengths? Uhhhh. I have pretty decent grammar. And I write a good love letter.
What are your writing weaknesses? Getting from point A to point B. So, transitions, I guess? I often have ideas for a few scenes, but connecting them can be a struggle.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I would only attempt it in Spanish. But probably just wouldn't.
First fandom you wrote for? Technically, I wrote some roleplay stuff for Harry Potter when I was very young, and I think the comic I wrote with my friend when we were 12 could be considered Sammy Keyes self-insert fic, but the first thing I wrote and actually acknowledged was for Good Omens.
Favourite fic you've ever written? I love so many of them, and I rotate through them as my favorites. But at the moment, I think my first McLorne fic, The Young and the Reckless, is my fav. I'm having a smoking and leather jackets in the 80s moment.

New tag game! Name nine fictional crushes (option to include photos)Â
Summarize it and/or let your followers drag you for your type :)Â
Thank you @acydpop for the tag! IDK that i have crushes of the twu wuv kind, but! i've definitely imprinted on some fictional characters harder than others. Here's a selection! Also, i cheat ;-) If you, yes YOU, would like to be tagged, then yes! You're tagged, come and play along !
1/ SPOCK!1!1!1!!! (Star Trek: TOS and the subsequent films only; the constant retconning of the new versions is... not for me, but kink tomato and everything). First saw the original show dubbed on TV as a pre-teen; Spock was me, Spock was aspirational, Spock was who my best self could be. Small me trained in front of a mirror to be able to raise one, and only one, eyebrow. It worked (but i only trained one eyebrow). This was before i knew of fandom and of course slash, and the internet was barely starting; i wouldn't even have heard about it. It may very well still have been the Cold War, or at least the death throes of the USSR. (Kirk/Spock forever!)
2/ Saint Seiya!! Not Seiya himself (lol nope), but otherwise... Max Whump (Hyoga and Scorpio? i MEAN! A quick look-see on Youtube showed me only dubbed versions, too-short versions, or WHAT THE FUCK is this video-game reboot or something??? ANYWAY) Central! Our Heroes keep being Mega-Whumped, but the Power Of Friendship etc etc. And when i say mega-whumped... From Shiryu who keeps blinding himself, to Shun and his many, many issues with self-worth, to that fight i mentioned with Hyoga still crawling forward even as Milo (Scorpio) keeps wounding him... And Ikki and his Tragic Backstory TM and sacrifice for his baby brother. DON'T start me on the gold saints and the ladies, k? (Yeah, i know, misogyny etc)
3/ Methos from Highlander Ooooh boy. He's sarcastic, self-serving, detached - or is he? Is he? (Yes, Methos/Duncan forever. What can i say? i'm basic) First fave in the morally grey area for this list... but not the last ;-)
4/ Daredevil/Matt Murdock *points at all the fic on my AO3* Yeah, so. Yeah. Nuff said. Picking this gif because crucifix + blood. Taking off a bloody shirt, the crisp white kind he'd wear in a court room as a lawyer, in a church: quintessential Matt Murdock. i just *clenches fist* Have Feelings
5/ Root (and the whole Person of Interest team) She's unhinged <3 Picking her because out of the whole team she's probably the one with the most compelling arc, IMO.
6/ Rodney McKay and John Sheppard and Ronon Dex (SGA) Ăber-nerd McKay was my first fave (yes, he's a jerk. Your point?), but also-Ăźber-nerd Colonel Sheppard and dead-pan Ronon Dex were faves as well <3 (AND RADEK!!!!) (Yes, Ronon Dex is Baby Jason Momoa before he grew huge muscles, and he is quite charming!)
7/ Sherlock Holmes (ACD or Granada versions mostly) He, too, in unhinged :D i probably don't need to introduce him, right? In the larger fandom, i also have a soft spot for JOAN Watson, in Elementary.
8/ Loki (and Cap and Iron Man, yes it's cheating) (so you're getting a two-fer in the gif) We shan't mention the various character assassinations that occurred in the MCU, k? There's an arc that shows change and growth, and then there's inexplicably ignoring huge bits of previous motivations, backstory, or characterization. But i digress
9/ Severus Snape So it's a bit hard here, because Rickman!Snape has never been my Snape, and i've only watched... idk, maybe the first... three? films? So i can't really provide a pic that fits. Anyway, loved the character from the start (he's funny, what can i say?), and when his childhood was revealed i was extra-sold. The social commentary behind his very poor origins, how he didn't fit and was bullied and grew bitter, and everything else... i discovered fandom at the time i started reading the books, around the time Goblet of Fire was published, so i first gravitated towards two fandoms: Star Trek and Harry Potter. Hence those two characters bookending this post ;-)

Fanfic Tag Game
I wasn't tagged by anyone but I saw this game and I loved it. So I'll be the one tagging others... And just to encourage people, I'll start answering myself...
1. How many fics do you have on AO3? 41
2. Whatâs your total AO3 word count? 513,790
3. What fandoms do you write for? Stargate, The Musketeers, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, mostly. I've writen for other fandoms in the past and sometimes I write short stuff from other fandoms but I've yet to go over the folder where I put that to organize it and post it.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
The Kirk Myth (SGA): John Sheppard/Cam Mitchell
Friends and Lovers (SGA): John Sheppard/Cam Mitchell
Booth's new life (Bones)
Vacations in paradise (SGA): John Sheppard/Cam Mitchell
Genetics (SG1): Sam Carter/Jack O'Neill
5. Do you respond to comments? Yes, always (at least I think I always do. If I don't answer, I've probably missed the comment or thought that I've answered but not). I love interacting with the readers.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? No, sorry, I don't end the fics with angst. The ending can be sad but I always leave room for hope of things getting better.
Enough sad stuff around. My "fun writing" is served with happy ending or hopeful ending.
7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? IDK, many of them. Any of my John Sheppard/Cam Mitchel fics.
8. Do you get hate on fics? I've never gotten hate in my fics. I remember getting a few comments complaining about "adult" stuff in fanfiction.net but since I moved to AO3 I've gotten none (and I've been there since... IDK... 2012
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes, I do.
Not sure how to answer the "what kind" question. I tend to queerficate my characters so even when the couple is m/f, I often make one of them bi, so my smut is always queer. I sometimes do kink but not too heavy... My smut often includes oral sex and explicit consent is super important to me.
10. Do you write crossovers? Whatâs the craziest one youâve written? Once. I did that once. It was a Bones/SG1 crossover in which I made Pelant a goa'uld... I just hated that Bones storyline soooo much because it made noooo sense from the beginning and it just got worse and worse and worse... and it lasted so long. So I just wanted to make fun of it.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? No, fortunately that has never happened.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? No. Though, I write in english even though is not my native language.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic? No, but I once took inspiration from one and wrote a "sequel" of shorts (with the author's permision, of course and using the "inspided by" feature).
14. Whatâs your all time favourite ship? Sam/Jack (SG1) and Sheppard/Mitchel (SGA and SG1). Though, not the only ones.
15. Whatâs a fic youâd like to finish but donât think you ever will? Never say never! I'd really like to finish "The Kirk Myth" but it's second in the list. By that I mean that I organized by WIPs in line and started to work on finishing them as I write the new stories. Focusing on one old WIP at a time (and 1 new story) is actually helping me to get real progess in finishing them. So, even though, I get the urge to write some other WIPs, I'm not.
16. What are your writing strengths? I think worldbuilding. I love thinking about how stuff works and I love filling the gaps the show leave about that.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? I think loosing focus and writing 3 million things at a time resulting in never finishing them.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic? I think is cool, if the character speaks that language it sometimes feels more natural to see it writen in it. Even when I don't understand it. Most authors write a translation in the notes or somewhere.
19. First fandom you wrote for? SG1 but I started posting for Bones. Remember what I said about 3 million proyects at a time... that's the reason
20. Favourite fic youâve written? IDK, I don't think I have a favorite fic of my own fics.

Hi! I hope this isn't too out of left field, but you're one of the fandom creators I've followed the longest (since SGA's heyday,) and one whose work I really enjoy/respect. It seems like fandom as community is kind of... dying? In favour of cash/influence motivated content creation? Do you have any tips on how to contribute to/preserve the community aspects (aside from the brigades/crusades against "insert problematic content here" that seems to band ppl together) of fandom? So much of it seems to just be throwing comments into the ether, and I'm not sure how to contribute.
I've been thinking about this ask for a while, but I don't think I'm any further along towards giving a good answer now than I was a week ago when you sent it.
There are so many aspects to answering this -- not just answering it but answering it as me. I will always be of fandom; I've spent roughly thirty of my forty-three years in fandom. But I haven't had a single specific fandom for a couple of years now. The last time I posted any fanfic of meaningful length was 2020; I've done shortfics since, but mainly for fundraisers and to prompts, and in the meantime worked on my own stuff. Generally, between about fourteen and thirty, I would find a specific canon, write for it for about two years, and then move on to a new canon. Marvel was an exception in that I think I was in it for about eight years, roughly 2012-2020; Good Omens was too in that I left the fandom and came back to it, something I've never done, but even then I wrote a couple of fics in 2020 and not really anything since.
Additionally, I'm, you know, here on Tumblr, I'm not really anywhere else. Fandom is so massive and our experience of it so subjective that it's difficult to say "where" fandom is; it was on livejournal and moved to tumblr but I think realistically since that move it has fractured significantly, to the point where it is spread across tumblr, twitter, tiktok, discord, and dreamwidth. I am on one of those. :D And nobody really knows what percentage of fandom is where. It goes back to the problem of how to define fandom and how to track a generally self-reporting, semi-closed community.
There is, I think, a growing movement to monetize hobbies in general, and separate from that to Create Content rather than just Post Shit. And social media platforms, for the most part, are designed to push specific content, so those capable of "gaming" the algorithm tend to rise to the top and be most visible, and that's a very homogenized set of data, generally speaking. It is the new Mainstream Culture.
But there are two problems with this new mainstream culture: first, it's insanely fragmented compared to ten or twenty years ago. It is possible to put your content out in front of literal millions of people on YouTube and still not be a cultural phenomenon in the way that a TV show with the same viewership would have been on network television in the 1990s, because you're just one of a million options. I knew who all six Friends were even when I didn't watch Friends, but I don't know who the top influencers on YouTube are, because there's like thirty thousand of them and they're all super niche and none of them appeal to my interests, and unlike in the 1990s when I had five TV channels, I have all of the internet I can look at instead.
I say this is a problem, but in many respects it's not -- at least it means alternate viewpoints that don't need to care about network executives or ad revenue are getting out there....somewhere. It's merely a problem in that we can no longer really establish a firm idea of where we are, culturally.
The second problem is more germane to us: fandom has always been a counterculture. Fandom is tightly engaged with disrupting the narrative of dominant culture, with telling the stories that dominant culture won't using the products of that culture to do so. Most countercultures eventually either die out or become mainstream, but fandom has proved slippery in that sense because it is always in reaction to established culture. When part of fandom becomes mainstream, the rest shrugs and moves on. The first time we've really seen that shift is in the monetization of things like gaming and nerd culture, which is a pretty recent phenomenon.
But I don't know what the extent is. I would imagine these days it's harder to find the real weird gritty countercultural stuff, because the "friendly" neutered nerd content gets pushed to the top, but I feel like once you've got an in, you can find the rest of it. So I don't know if it's that fandom is dying, it's just being split into two halves: the very visible dominant-culture-friendly stuff and the less marketable and thus harder-to-find countercultural stuff. And in any case I'm not super qualified to talk about that split because I don't honestly see it that often. I know it's there, but I'm at a remove from it because of my particular status in fandom as a long-term, well-known fan with a relatively large following. (Relative to the norm. Relative to like, anyone on tiktok, I'm nobody.) So my vision of fandom is eternally skewed by the fact that I'm the Spiders Georg of fandom.
So I don't really have any answers because I don't even properly have my arms around the problem. I'm not sure anyone does, or knows the size or severity of it, whether it's a non-issue or a major one. I'm not sure anyone can. Fandom is huge and weird and invisible and hard to predict. And that's okay; part of what makes us fandom is our ability to adapt and integrate and make things our own, so we just...keep doing that in the best way we're able, I think, and trust the rest will figure itself out and present itself to us as either a fun new opportunity or a problem to be solved.

đŚ, đ§, đ¨, đ§ Rodney McKay, đ,
and ⨠(you really do!)
for the fanfic writer emoji ask
(you see, I'm curious, and insatiable... feel free to drop any đ)
TIA!
Hiiiiii! Thank you for asking :) I love that you asked for so many! They really made me think about things!!
đŚ What's the sweetest fic you've created so far?
For SGA, it's definitely Maple Sugar, No Lemon, the Farmers' Market Lorne/McKay AU. Seriously the schmoopiest thing I've ever written, I think. Another contender would be The Pastry Caper (Firefly) - because it contains actual pastries!
đ§ Do you spend much time researching for your stories?
Yes and no! Sometimes I do. It depends on the topic. Sometimes I just wing it, or make assumptions about how things work based on what I've seen. For Seven Weeks I did look into the routes/offerings of luxury trains, since I hadn't been on them (fun websites!). @sparrowsarus pointed me in the direction of some of the options for that (thank you!). Sometimes though I get so into the researching that I lose interest in the story and ditch it. I have ~3 stories like that (at least) - I'll never go back and finish them because the process of researching them just made me doubt myself. So it's a fine line for me.
đ¨ How do you feel about fan art of your stories?
Oh, I love the idea of it! @mific made fanart for a podfic that she did of one of my stories and I love it (and the podfic) so much, I can't even tell you. I was pretty inarticulate about the whole thing. So much happiness. If people like my stuff enough to make fanart, or a podfic, or a remix, etc, then I am totally, utterly floored and happy by that!
đ§ Pick a character, and I'll tell you my favorite headcanon for them (Rodney McKay).
I don't really think too much about character backstories/head canons. I know this is ridiculous, but it's true. I like to see where other people take them/what they explore, but I don't have firm backstories or anything. I'll go with the flow for a specific story. But one thing I absolutely 100% think is that the science staff have a lot of sex, because hey! Atlantis is high stress and they need to find ways to work that out and also sex is great for thinking through problems, and yes. I firmly believe that Rodney McKay can get around. Good times, no-strings, everyone respects each other (at least in terms of the sex, if not necessarily in terms of their science, lol) fucking.
đ What leads you to consider a fic a success?
If I'm happy with the way it turned out, and if people enjoy it (like, if it's humour, it makes them laugh; if it's smut, people think it's hot; if it's more about feelings, it gets emotional reactions). I love knowing the reactions to things I write because it helps me know if I did a decent job of it, you know? But also, I want to feel happy with the final structure, voices, characterisations.
⨠Give you and your writing a compliment. Go on now. You know you deserve it
This one is awkward for me because I prefer to compliment other people. But I guess I'll say that I think I write humour pretty well. I mean, it makes me laugh (aka cackle), anyway!

as a fellow fandom Old, curious about what you think about the current generation's focus on headcanons and having a "correct" way to interpret a character. i don't remember this kind of focus existing in older fandoms like sga, characters could be gay in one story, bi in another, etc etc with different kinds of backgrounds and identities. these days there seem to be so many arguments about whether a character is being read with the correct hyperspecific identity
I mean, it's not and was never my sort of fandom, and I never really understood it. To me, the pleasure of fandom is doing it differently, and having others do it differently, each time: that's the fun and the whole point. WHAT IF this? WHAT IF that? I have people asking me about my head canons all the time and I always say that I don't really have them or WANT them--I'm literally trying to do it differently each time, and typically if the characters get too settled in my head I stop writing--like, when I can't think of interesting variables to change. That includes sexuality but more broadly, psychology, setting, and backstory. (It's also why I don't typically write fic or a lot of fic for really quality pro-fic, where what they've done is so pleasing or convincing that there's no fun imagining it differently.)
But it's also part of two trends that worry me: 1) not understanding that fiction is fiction (uh, these characters aren't real? so they don't really have sex lives or sexuality? which is why btw they can't "really" be straight either?) and 2) giving wayyyyy too much power to TBTB (when, honestly, their drafts of the characters and events are often the worst of the thousands of stories. Who would esteem Age of Ultron over 95 percent of the fiction in the AO3?) I don't recognize the authority of any professional storyteller over my imagination! :P
That said, I suspect that what's really at stake is a profound personal identification with a character to the point that the headcanon becomes a sorting mechanism for "finding your tribe" or whatever. Which is fine, fandom can be that for people! And it works, too--the world is wide enough for Hamilton and me. But the most convincing arguments IMO are always artistic: you can argue til you're blue, but create a compelling Fanon and you're golden!
