Jing Nyan

Yukong feels so lonely after her daughter left the house for college, she wants a company and someone to take care of.

She is happy to feed you, a stray one, and you officially become hers when she managed to put on a collar on you.

However, she is ill-informed about taking a stray as a pet and never crossed her mind to spay you.

Resulting her kitty to be missing for days, only to come back with filled belly.

On the other side of the neighborhood, Fu Xuan has this healthy fat cat, she foolishly thought her cat is so lazy as long as he is inside, it will be okay.

Oh how wrong she is that Jing Nyan is determined enough to meet up with the stray cat walking outside their house.

Imagine the surprise on Fu Xuan's face when she sees the status from her neighbor about the oh-so-familiar looking kittens.

The meeting started with both women apologizing for not spaying their cats, and ended up with Fu Xuan roasting the hell out her own cat.

how silly does futo sound in japanese? most translations make her talk in really overblown faux-shakespearean english, which is kind of a pet peeve of mine because it turns her into a joke character - but I don't know to what extent this is supported by the original. is she using old-fashioned language correctly, or is it supposed to sound funny? and how old-fashioned is her speech compared to how she's translated? like is it the equivalent of 1500s english or is it older/newer? thankyou!

Futo's speech is way more exaggerated in many English translations than in Japanese, yeah. Personally I tend to vary it depending on the tone of the story, how extreme the author is doing it (in the case of doujins) and the feng shui in the room, but I honestly kinda struggle with the issue too.

Futo basically speaks "period drama Japanese". Doesn't really even matter which period, everything pre-Meiji is mostly interchangeable as far as the trope is concerned – it's not really supposed to be an accurate representation of old Japanese, which would be much harder to understand. It's actually a lot less extreme than, say, Mamizou's manner of speech, but intended to convey "old-timey" rather than "old-timer". Where Mamizou speaks in the stereotypical manner of a country grandpa (more so than a grandma, really), Futo speaks like a character who's literally from the past. Or maybe a yakuza or hammy cartoon character. Not even an especially fancy court official, and also not a samurai (which its own trope de gozaru).

Problem is, in Japanese, verbal tics like that are easily conveyed by things like choice of pronouns and sentence endings. Those are things you can consistently stick in almost every sentence without really altering them or even being all that grating (the tics here being more like "zo" than "kupo", "nyan" or even "desu"). In terms of actual vocabulary or verbose loquaciousness, Futo doesn't really stand out from anyone else.

This is different in English, where to convey things like "medieval speech" we don't have easy shortcuts like "the old-timey sentence ending" and are instead dependent on vocabulary, grammar and wording choices to turn the whole sentence "Shakespearean" (which of course is anachronistic too) in pretty ridiculous ways. The Ten Desires translation manages to turn very basic and short lines into "Thou who hast prais'd my resurrection: Speak anon, and name thyself." Of course, the small ways that the pronouns, particles and overall phrasing convey tone in Japanese is hard to explain directly, just like it's hard to translate English tone to Japanese. English sentences also tend to be longer in general than Japanese ones, but that difference is just widened even further.

In a sense, you could say that English has no choice but to go to those much greater and more annoying lengths to make Futo's way of speech "as obvious" as it is in Japanese. But while Futo's whole thing is also silly enough in Japanese for the fandom there to acknowledge and make jokes about it, I do sometimes feel like it's gotten out of hand and become kinda self-sustaining on the English end, rather than actually based on the original text anymore.

In theory, my preferred way of writing Futo is to make her sound slightly stilted in some less grating ways, like avoiding contractions and very obviously modern words, throwing in the occasional archaic one if I feel like it fits, and kinda chewing the scenery a bit. Maybe even the thee/thou stuff, especially if the work is more comedic. But the execution varies on my part, and sometimes I just sacrifice the whole idea at the altar of legibility.

A/N: I haven't written in a bit and I needed to get this idea out my head. Wally not knowing how to kiss gives me cute-aggression.

Wally had insisted on taking you to this large apple tree in the meadow. You glance over it, thinking that it was indeed a great place for reading or napping in the sun. You lay down the blanket and get comfortable sitting next to Wally in the shade. The two of you had been spending more time together and you found yourself developing feelings for him.  For the moment you had decided to keep those feelings to yourself, not sure of how Wally would react.

You were excited to continue the book that you had been reading to Wally for the last few hang outs. As you read aloud you feel a nervous energy coming from Wally. He can’t seem to get comfortable, shifting around constantly.  

You see out the corner of your eye, Wally’s face coming closer. You feel your face flush as this moment you were waiting for is finally happening. Suddenly you feel Wally’s face collide with your cheek, he pulls back with a “Mwah!”

You freeze for a moment, confused by the sudden bonk on the face.

“Wally, what…was that?”

“A kiss, silly!”

You’re not sure if you should be blushing or laughing, you feel like doing both. “Wally that is…not…a kiss,” you say hesitantly, you didn’t want to embarrass him. “Oh?! Then how does a kiss work?” Wally says as his face lights up in curiosity. You start to wonder if he can even feel embarrassment. You certainly can though as you feel a blush creep up your cheeks while you think through how to explain to Wally how kissing works. You try to quickly push through an explanation to Wally, he seems eager to learn but you’re not sure if he understood a single thing you said. You finally accept that you would have to show him. “Here Wally, like this…” you say as you lean in, giving him a kiss on the cheek. Wally’s eyes fly open and you swear you saw his pupils get massively larger for a second.

“Oh, neighbor, that was amazing! Does that mean we’re together now?”

“Wait what?....What?” You feel your brain become overwhelmed, so many questions and revelations happening so quickly.

“You know since we kissed and all. I thought that’s how people in a relationship act? Eddie and Frank kiss all the time.”

“I mean they do Wally but, they kiss on the lips? That’s more of a romantic thing and that was a kiss on the cheek I wasn’t sure what…” you find yourself rambling. You then realize that Wally has repositioned himself kneeling in front you. You start to question him when he springs forward, colliding with you at such force that you fall back a bit, catching yourself with your forearms behind you. You’re surprised at how quickly Wally has learned as his lips press against yours, this time in an actual kiss.  You feel his lips and the weight of him leaning on you lift as he sits back. “How was that?” he asks. “That was…perfect, Wally,” you say as your face turns pink.

“So we’re together now, right?”

“Wally was this whole thing a way to ask me out?”

“It was, neighbor! I asked Barnaby for some tips but I came up with most of the plan on my own.”

You giggle to yourself, of course he did. You reach over and grab his hand, you notice a light blush on Wally’s face.

“So does this mean I can kiss you whenever I want, neighbor?”

I am writing a teen!Nanami X Reader LOV fic (Just One Bed!) and there's something important for you to know, if you are but a small baby to me (likely 24 or below).

A great many years ago, when the mountains were young, and you were but a twinkle in your Mothers' eye, we had GameBoys which we played Pokémon on. To trade Pokémon, it necessitated a cable to connect the two GameBoys.

The days of the internet were young (our cats went nyan, and our salad had fingers), and it had not yet made its way to our tiny pixel kingdoms. Pikachu had not yet been put on a diet, and obtaining a Gengar, or a Machamp, or a Golem, required a friend and a cable of legend.
