i haven't heard of university abolition before, and if you are willing, i would like to hear what it's about. what is the university abolitionist image of a better alternative to universities? should learning still be centralized?

University abolition, as with any other form of abolition worth its salt, understands the role played by the institution of the university under capitalism in sustaining the conditions of capitalist-imperialist hegemony, analyses the institution accordingly, and recognises that the practices that the university purports to represent (that of intellectual production, the sharing and developing of knowledge) will undergo a fundamental overhaul and reconstitution under communism. This means looking at the university not merely as an organic institution wherein we study and develop ideas, but asking what ideas are developed and legitimised, and who is afforded the opportunity to do so, and why the university exists in the first place; we are taking a materialist rather than idealist approach. 

Simply put, the role of the university is to restrict access to knowledge and knowledge production, and to ensure the continuance of class divides and hierarchised labour. These restrictions come about in a vast number of ways; the most immediately obvious is the fact that one must meet a certain set of criteria in order to qualify for entrance in the first place, and this criteria tends to require compliance with the schooling system (itself another such arm of capitalist governance), a certain amount of wealth (and/or a willingness to accrue debt), and an ability to demonstrate methods of intellectual engagement compliant with the standard of the academy. Obviously, there are massive overlaps in this set of criteria; those who come from wealthier backgrounds are more likely to have had a good education and thus can better demonstrate normative intellectual engagement, those who can demonstrate that engagement have probably complied with the schooling system, and so on. The logic behind the existence of private schools is the idea that sufficient wealth can near-enough secure your child's entry into the university and therefore entry into the wealthier classes as an adult, with the most prestigious institutions overrun by students from privately educated backgrounds. Already, you can see how this is a tactic that filters out people from marginalised backgrounds; if you’re too poor, too un[der]educated, too disabled, not white enough, &c. &c., your chances of admittance into higher education grow slimmer and slimmer.

Access to the university affords access to knowledge; most literally through institutional access to books, papers, libraries, but also through participation in lectures and seminars, reading lists, first-hand contact with active academics, the opportunity to produce work and receive feedback on it, the opportunity to develop your own ideas in a socially legitimised sphere. As I explained above, who is afforded access to such knowledge is stratified and limited; the institution is hostile to anyone deemed socially disposable under capitalism. Access to the university also affords access to a university degree, with which you can continue down the research path (and thus participate in the cycle of radical knowledge-production being absorbed and defanged by the academy, and water down your own ideas to make them palatable to institutions which tend to balk at anything with serious Marxist commitments), or gain entry to better-paid, more stable, more prestigious jobs than those which people without degrees are most often relegated to. In this sense, the people who are more likely to be able to meet the access criteria for the university and then successfully participate in it are able to retain their class position (or else promulgate the myth of social mobility as a solution to mass impoverishment) and thus gain a vested interest in maintaining the conditions of hegemony. Those who gain entry into the middle class have done so after undergoing a process of stratification according to means; which is to say, class, race, [dis]ability; and tend to lose interest in defending a politic which seeks to destabilise their relatively privileged position in the pecking order.

Success in a research career, too, depends upon liberties afforded by wealth; can you afford to go to all these conferences, do low-paid and insecure teaching work in the university, churn out research, and support yourself through a postgrad degree without going insane? Not if you don’t have independent means. In the UK, the gap between undergrad and masters funding is absolutely wild—obviously there are scholarships afforded to a limited number of people (another access barrier—the whole institution runs on the myth of artificial scarcity), but broadly speaking, it’s pretty much impossible to put yourself through an MA with just the money you get from SFE unless you work a lot on the side to pay your bills (this is what I tried to do; I went insane and dropped out, lmfao) or have independent wealth. Establishing oneself as an ‘academic’ is simply easier when you have financial security. In this way, the people who make it to the very top of academia (the MAs, the PhDs) tend to be people who come from privileged backgrounds; people who are less likely to challenge hegemony, who will maintain the essential conditions by which the university sustains itself, which is to say the conditions of social stratification. These people often tend to hold reactionary positions on class—the people who are outraged at how little a stipend postgrad students get tend not to think twice about the university’s cleaners being paid minimum wage, or think of working-class jobs as shameful failstates from which their academic qualifications have allowed them to escape (how many people have you heard get absolutely aghast at the thought of ‘[person with a BA/MA/PhD] working a typically working-class job’?). Academic success tends to engender buying into the mythology of academia as a class stratifier and class stratification as indicative of one’s value, even amongst people who probably call themselves academic Marxists.

Universities are also tangible forces of counterinsurgency. I live in the UK, where universities are huge drivers of gentrification; university towns and cities will welcome mass student populations, usually from predominantly middle-class backgrounds and often coming to cities with significant working-class and immigrant communities, neighbourhoods formerly home to those communities will be effectively cleaned out so that students can live there, and the whole character of the neighbourhood changes to accommodate people from well-off backgrounds who harbour classist, racist feelings towards the locals & who will assimilate into the salaried middle-class once they graduate. More liberally-oriented universities will tend to espouse putatively progressive positions whilst making no effort to forge a relationship with grassroots movements happening on the streets of the city they’re set up in; student politics absorbs anyone with even slightly radical inclinations whilst accomplishing approximately fuck-all save for setting a few people off on the NGO track; like, the institution defangs radical potential whilst contributing to the class stratification of the city it’s set up in. 

This is without even touching on the role played by the university in maintaining conditions of imperialism and neocolonialism, both through academic output regarding colonised regions (from ‘Oriental studies’ to the proliferation of white academics who specialise in ‘Africa’ to the use of the Global South as something of a playground for white Global North academics to conduct their research to the history of epistemologies such as race science as transparently fortifying and legitimating the imperialist order) and through material means of restricting access to and production of knowledge based on country of origin (universities in the Global South are significantly limited in what academic output they can access compared to those in the Global North; engagement with Global North academia relies on the ability to move freely, something that is restricted by one’s passport; language barriers and the primacy of English in the Global North academy) keeping knowledge production in the Global South dependent on the hegemony of the North. Syed Farid Alatas has termed this ‘academic dependency,’ as a corollary to dependency theory; academia in the GS is shaped by the material dependence it has on the West, which in turn restricts the kind of academic work that can be undertaken in the first place. Ultimately, all institutions under capitalism must ultimately reroute back to the conditions that favour capitalism, and the university is not an exception.

This is just a very brief overview of an expansive topic; I would recommend going away and examining in greater detail the role played by the university under capitalism, and what the institution filters out, and why. What sort of research gets funding? What sort of knowledge gains social legitimacy? What can the university absorb and what must it reject? Who is producing knowledge and to whom are they accountable? etc.

Revival Mulder Was Diagnosed with the Wrong Depression

In My Struggle I, Sveta reveals Scully diagnosed Mulder with "endogneous depression", which is a type of major depressive disorder (MDD, also known as clinical depression.) However, the clues provided in canon don't quite add up.

According to healthline: "Endogenous depression occurs without the presence of stress or trauma. In other words, it has no apparent outside cause. Instead, it may be primarily caused by genetic and biological factors. This is why endogenous depression might also be referred to as “biologically based” depression." And verywellmind explains: "People with endogenous depression often feel that their symptoms occur “for no reason”—at least in the sense that there is no apparent��external cause.... For example, a person with a family history of mental illness may be more likely to develop depression."

From the get-go, those descriptions don't fit Mulder; but they make less sense when compared to exogenous depression.

Again, according to healthline: "Exogenous depression happens after a stressful or traumatic event takes place. This type of depression is more commonly called “reactive” depression." And verywellmind further clarifies: "Exogenous (or reactive) depression is triggered by an outside stressor such as the loss of a loved one, getting divorced, or losing your job. People who experience or witness a traumatic event may develop depression as a direct result of that exposure."

(Although current thought lumps both "types" of depression together by their similarities rather than their differences, the show went out of its way to highlight which depression it picked. It chose... poorly.)

The cherry on top? Scully didn't have the expertise to diagnose her partner with endogenous depression, regardless. healthline: "To be diagnosed with MDD, you must meet certain criteria listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). This manual is often used by mental health professionals to diagnose mental health conditions." And verywellmind: "Your primary care doctor may evaluate you for depression in the office, but they might also want you to see someone who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental illness, such as a psychiatrist." (Even though Scully also "diagnosed" a side character's mental state in Founder's Mutation, the fact that she was unqualified to do so in either circumstance remains.)

Lastly, verywellmind gives us a clinching little tidbit: "Another difference is that people with exogenous depression don't always have the physical symptoms of depression, like having trouble sleeping or change in appetite, which is common in other forms of the condition." (Which would fit Mulder's seeming "normality" during the early Revival episodes. Mulder already had odd habits to begin with, anyway-- it would be easy to tuck away his symptoms from casual observers.)

So, we're told that Fox Mulder-- a man who only canonically displayed depressive symptoms after a traumatic event; and who had, apparently, no recollection whatsoever of a predisposition towards depression before Samantha's abduction-- collapsed inwardly due to... biological or genetic factors? Rather than collapsing because of, I don't know, the countless losses and failures he suffered through the years (which would be in-line with his pre-established trauma response?)

Sigh.

I haven't done any writing on Closed Position this week. I know! I'm sorry. There were a few details I was still thinking through that happen later on and I wanted to be sure I was on the right path to get us there. However, I have been working to nail down those details and fill in my outline with the important stuff. I think I have a pretty solid path set at this point, so I feel a little more confident going forward with writing.

Since I don't have any snippets to offer this week, I bring you a mood board of things to come. Each image represents an event that aligns with some part of the plot.

Behind the Scenes

In addition to working on my outline, I've also been doing A LOT of research, as I always do. That includes details on hotels and prep/filming schedules for tv shows to really nail down the 'behind the scenes' aspect of things. I'm even making song choices for Dieter & Kat’s performances based on the beat count required for each dance.

Believe it or not, these types of details do help form the plot of the story. Sometimes those small details will spark an idea for putting the characters in situations I wouldn't have thought of otherwise. While it does seem a little crazy to do, it does actually help me in writing...but it does make me a little slow sometimes. 😬

New activity and character rules are now in place for all players! Please read carefully as this is in effect from 1st October.

Activity Changes

Players must be active on all their characters at least twice per month, on two separate weeks. (For example, posting on the 1st week of the month and the 3rd week of the month). This will be checked at the end of each month, and a warning issued to those who have not posted within this time span.

You must have an interaction with at least 2 other players (not characters) on each character. If you are seen to only be interacting with certain players (bubbling) and not reaching out to anyone else in the RP you will be issued a warning. You will be notified if you have been inactive on individual characters.

Please keep on top of the threads you owe and don’t drop threads after the first or second interaction. Reply to the starters people make for you, and reply to the replies you get on your open starters. Reply to open starters!! I will be checking reply counts on threads. Reply to your replies and communicate with your partner if the thread isn’t working.

If you’re going to be gone for between two weeks to a month or more, you must ask for a hiatus. You do not need to give a reason for the hiatus, but you are asked to check in with us at the end of your hiatus if you need an extension or are returning to the dash.

Muse posts do not count toward activity. Completing tasks does, as long as you have also been active at least once in the month.

Other Rules

In the interest of diversity and making our group as welcoming as possible to all writers, your 2nd character’s faceclaim must be either a Person of Colour, Body Diverse or Gender Diverse (or meet multiple criteria). If your 2nd character is not a person of colour, then your 3rd character must be a person of colour.

As our upper limit has been extended to 10 characters, we ask that no more than 4 characters are white & cisgender. This means that 6 characters must be diverse in some way, meeting at least one of the above criteria.

Starters are your friends. Please reply to at least two open starters before posting your own, and remember to post an open starter at minimum every few weeks so all players have a chance to interact.

So I know you have read and understood these changes to activity and character diversity, please reply to this post with your least favourite colour.

Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease vs Dilated Cardiomyopathy (Part 1)

Hope you are ready to do some learning today! I didn't want to bog down Nadia's post too much so I figured I'd do something a little more in depth, separately. I also hope that the information here might help anyone seeking information about either disease. Might want to go and make yourself a drink and/or a snack because this will be a long read.

What is MMVD? Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease also called Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease is the most common cardiac disease affecting dogs. It is an acquired disease (aka "adult onset") that is most typically seen in small breed geriatric dogs. It is characterized by a progressive thickening of the Mitral valve, which is the valve on the left side of the heart - in other words, the valve that connects the left ventricle (LV) to the Left Atrium (LA). The thickening results in it becoming more rigid and overtime it loses the ability to close properly, causing a leak (or regurgitation) from the left ventricle to the left atrium. Over time, the valve has a tendency to become so fibrinous that the leak becomes more important with time, and for some dogs with very advanced MMVD the valve may not even really close much at all anymore.

Because of the leak, over time the left ventricle and the left atrium will enlarge. When the left atrium becomes severely enlarged the patient will progress to congestive heart failure. Because of the stiffening of the valve the chordae tendineae that hold it together are also at risk of rupturing as the disease progresses. When a dog ruptures a major chord, they are at risk of an acute episode of CHF without dilation of the left atrium (because the left atrium does not have a chance to adjust or adapt to the sudden backflow) and patients in this situation will often require critical hospitalization care for 24-48 hours before normalizing. In some very uncommon or rare cases the disease can be self limiting. We have seen it in one or two patients where the dog actually improved after being in B2, with the heart reducing in size because the mitral valve thickened so much it started plugging the leak again. What causes MMVD? It is unknown what exactly causes this process. In certain breeds there is a very strong genetic, hereditary and familial component like in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Dachshunds, Cocker Spaniels, Yorkies, Pomeranians and others. It mostly affects small breeds, but any dog breed can get MMVD. How is it diagnosed? MMVD can only truly be diagnosed exclusively via cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography) by a cardiologist. It can be listed as a differential with the help of other diagnostic tools like x-ray, auscultation (presence of a heart murmur on the left side), age/breed of the patient and clinical symptoms (late stages). There are other diagnostic, clinical tests but they are non-specific blood tests that can merely serve to further refer out to a Cardiologist. Can you treat it? Yes. The primary treatment for MMVD will be the administration of Pimobendan once the disease progresses to moderate stage MMVD classified as ACVIM B2. Because it is so prevalent in dogs there is empirical data on it, and one in particular the groundbreaking EPIC study has helped establish very specific guidelines for the classification of Moderate Stage MMVD and the early (pre-clinical) administration of pimobendan. In order to be classified as B2 and qualify for early administration of pimobendan the dog must meet 4 criteria:

Grade III heart murmur or higher

Left Atrium/Aortic (LA/Ao) ratio of 1.6 or higher

Left Ventricle Internal Diameter in Diastole Normalized for weight (LVIDDN) of 1.7 or higher

VHS (Vertebral Heart Score) of 10.5 or higher on xray

Where an echo is not possible, in order to qualify for pimobendan, it is recommended to wait until the the VHS is equal to 11.5 or higher. What is miraculous about the EPIC study is that it offers proof that administering Pimobendan to a dog in B2/moderate MMVD will slow down significantly the progression of the disease. The median time it takes for a B2 moderate MMVD to progress to a Stage C heart failure is 766 days without the administration of Pimobendan. With pimobendan that median increases by 60% 1228 days. Once a dog reaches CHF typically the prognosis is 6-12 months post diagnosis of CHF. With pimobendan it adds about 10% overall time without clinical signs or quality of life issues. Some Cardiologists will also prescribe an ACE Inhibitor (Angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors) alongside Pimobendan even while still in Moderate/B2 stage, while others will prescribe it rather only once the dog progresses to a Stage C (aka severe stage with congestive heart failure). Once the dog reaches Stage C, typically a diuretic will be added to the treatment. Management can include adjusting dosage of the medication and on occasion adding in additional diuretics, or if exhibiting new cardiac symptoms, adding additional medication. For example in large breed dogs you can see Atrial fibrillation, and in some individuals you'll also see Ventricular Premature Contractions (VPCs or PVCs which doberman people will be familiar with due to its role in DCM) so medications can be added to control these aspects too. Now what is interesting with MMVD is that there are currently two surgical procedures/interventions with very limited availability. One is an open heart surgery that is curative and consists in repairing the Mitral Valve. There is the JASMINE Animal Referral Hospital in Japan where the procedure was developed by Dr Uechi Masami, who has then gone on to train teams in the UK at the Queen Mother Hospital Royal Veterinary College as well as a team in France at HOPIA. Currently Dr Uechi is performing mitral valve repair procedures at the University of Florida in the USA, with the goal to try and train as many teams in the USA and around the world. The likelihood of this surgery ever becoming widespread or common place or even accessible to most people is fairly low, given the high demand, and how resource intensive it is both in equipment and specialized teams. The other very recent intervention is the TEER mitral valve repair, a minimally invasive procedure that consists in installing a clamp on the mitral valve to bring it back closer together and thus reduce or eliminate the leak. Can I do anything to prevent it? While there's nothing you can do to prevent MMVD from occurring, if you intend to purchase a puppy from a small breed or medium breed, especially one of the breeds known to have high prevalence of the disease, it is imperative to ask the breeder if the parents have been screened and are being monitored for cardiac disease by a cardiologist, whether that's with a yearly auscultation or a yearly echocardiogram (because MMVD is always associated with a murmur, for regular owner it is acceptable to auscultate yearly, and only do an echo if/once a murmur is heard). Ask about the pedigree also. I strongly encourage you to start screening/monitoring for it when your dog reaches 4-5 years for at risk breeds. Breeding animals should be screened before being bred and then yearly thereafter. If you are unsure whether your breed is considered at risk, you can check the recommended tests for your breed on the OFA website. If you adopt a pup from a rescue or shelter with an unknown genetic background, I would strongly encourage you to ask your vet to properly auscultate during your yearly vet visits and physical exams, and I would request a referral to a cardiologist (if required in your area, our cardiology department doesn't per se require a referral anyone can call and book) even if your dog only has a Grade I-II murmur.

Hello! I have just a teeny tiny amount of questions regarding blood.

Is there a list of possible blood grades? Is so, is triple A the highest highest one? That must mean Oliver really is the top shelf. Is the lowest grade low F?

Does a human's blood grade determine if they will be an erased thralll or a sentient one?

If so, what's the minimum grade for not getting erased, low B maybe? Is there also a minimum grade for edible blood? Is there blood so bad or digusting a vampire cannot digest it?

If the grade of the blood is not the sole factor, then what other factors are there? Natural strength? Natural level of obedience? Are there grades for that?

Human blood farms, what grade are the people there? Is there a certain point in the blood grade list that a human just cannot be sold to a farm because they're blood is too valuable? Do some vampires keep thralls as pets but not too drink from and have another thrall just for drinking.

Like let's say a human's blood is not exactly appetizing, but they are very cute (atleast in the eyes of a vampire) and docile or they have a really pleasing personality so they're kept around like a lap dog? (i'm thinking of Emily and betty, Emily is a low B, so she can't be that tasty, but I'm thinking Jessica keeps her around because she likes her looks and personality. Meanwhile I imagine Betty being a B plus or even a low A, but she's more like a blood source than pet)

Are there some magical foods that can gradually change the taste of human blood, like berries or some meats? Are they toxic to humans but vampires don't care? Let's say they do work, I imagine it would just be some superficial or even worse change? Kind of like, hmmmm... Trying to replicate the autentic taste of fresh vanilla from expensive vanilla beans, but using some 50 cent vanilla flavor you found at the dollar store

The blood grades are indeed triple A through F. Oliver and Fitz were both the top of the top shelf. F would be considered undrinkable.

There isn't a perfect correlation between blood grade and allowed sentience. At the auction house, humans with high quality blood are almost never erased, because erasure is difficult and time consuming to reverse. For the expensive merchandise, it's better to keep them sentient and then offer erasure as an option after purchase. This is why Jameson is complaining about the thralls, since all of the thralls that meet his criteria for blood quality are conditioned to be servants and pets. 

There's no minimum grade that will allow a human to escape possible erasure. If Jameson had bought Oliver, he would have paid for erasure after purchase. 

Minimum grade for edible blood depends on how picky or desperate the vampire in question is, but F grade generally refers to blood considered inedible. This usually happens when a human is diseased or poisoned.

There aren't official grades for other factors that can affect a thrall's price, especially since those tend to be largely subjective. Outside of the vampires who erase their humans fully, most vampires choose based on a variety of factors. You're right that Jessica chooses her thralls for looks as much as for blood quality. Many vampires keep more than one thrall, so it's common to have one for primarily drinking and another for primarily being a servant or pet.

There aren't really foods that can magically make a human's blood a higher grade, although you're probably right that scams like that would exist. The general prevailing wisdom among vampires is that fresh meat, vegetables and fruits are best for feeding your thrall. Seafood, spices, and other pungent foods are sometimes avoided, but this varies greatly from culture to culture.

I don't think every thrall gets a special word, I think Lily just does that to her favorites.

Hello hello and welcome and hi. This blog has been up for A While now but we never really had the balls to interact with fellow systems before aaaand long story short I'm changing that now (I blame the medicine that I'm currently on because I am more than a little bit Zooted, LMAO). Basically if you're a DID-centric blog or just someone who's plural do you mind interacting with this post and maybe possibly also sliding into our DMs? We've been DYING to meet other systems and at least TRY to make some new friends. Some information about us/our blog just so there won't be any misunderstandings:

Please read our pinned post before interacting. If we're not your cup of tea we don't care that you block us and move on, we just wanted to be completely open and honest about ourselves and some of our stances before trying to befriend other people. No hard feelings there!

We prefer not to interact with minors for personal reasons, it just makes us extremely uncomfortable. Nothing against you if you're a minor of course, it's just a personal preference like I said. Sorry!

We post extremely dark themes on our blog and most of it is just our own way to process our own trauma but we understand that it can be a deal-breaker for some. Sorry again!

“When was the last time that you saw your husband, Mrs. Skinner?” Tara asked the woman sitting on the couch. She sniffled and wiped her eyes with the tissue in her hand.

“Um, we came down the elevator. I went to talk to the man at the counter,” She wiped some more tears, a sob escaped her lips, “Um, I’m sorry, some of Artie’s clothes were missing when we came back from breakfast.” She explained. Tara nodded.

“Can you tell me what clothes were taken?”

“Yes, yes, a, uh, white button up… I think he was missing a tie as well...” She sniffled again.

“When did you realize he was missing?” Tara asked

“The man told me they would check the security cameras in our hall and told us to make a police report. I turned around to get back to him and… and he was gone. I looked everywhere and… That’s when I called him and I found his phone on the floor and…” She sobbed again, burying her face in her hands.

“Was there anyone else in the lobby? Anyone who looked suspicious?” Tara offered her some more tissues.

“No, no I don’t think so… I didn’t… I wasn’t paying attention.” She sobbed harder. Tara squeezed the woman’s hand.

“My team and I are very good at what we do. We will find your husband.” She said. The woman looked up at her.

“Please, Dr. Lewis, please find him…” Tara stood up,

“We will, would you like me to have an officer drive you home?” The woman nodded. Tara walked her out and spoke to one of the officers before going to the conference room.

“The wife said that some of his clothes were missing when they got back to the hotel room. The unsub could’ve taken them beforehand.” Tara told the team.

“Did she say what clothes were taken?” JJ asked.

“A white button up, and a tie.” Tara said. 

“The same thing the other victims were found in… Did any of them report clothes being taken before the abduction?” Emily asked.

“Joshua Davids, the first victim, reported a break in a few days before his abduction, but he said he wasn’t sure that anything was taken.” Spencer started, “Second victim, Alexander Fairburn, didn’t make any reports and neither did the third victim, Frank Eccelstone.” He continued.

“Well, it's possible the unsub took the clothes that he was going to put them in beforehand, but why? It's such a big risk.” Emily pointed, “Has the hotel sent over the security camera footage?” 

“When they looked they found that all the files had been erased. Garcia is working to see if she can recover them.” Tara explained.

“Well, then, he must be pretty tech savvy.” JJ said. The rest of the team nodded, “Spence, did you get anything from the geographical profile?” she said, looking at the man who sat beside her.

“He abducted all of his victims from different hotels in different parts of town… But each was found within a mile of a library.” Spencer said. He looked at the crime scene photos again.

“Okay, well so far we’ve profiled that he is angry that he can’t perform with these men, which is why he stabs them… But then he feels remorse and he dresses them up in nice clothes, but why does he keep them for a whole week?” Emily said.

“Well, we know he keeps them alive so… Maybe he’s courting them?” Tara said, “And maybe if they don’t meet his criteria by a certain point, he kills them.” She explained further.

“What’s his criteria, though? And what’s the significance of the library?” 

“What if the man he truly wants works at a library, or frequents the libraries in town?” Spencer said, “We need to get Garcia to compile a list of male librarians, students, and professors who may’ve been to these libraries. We can narrow it down to people who match the general description of the victims and then we have a list of the possible true target.” He finished. Derek was already dialing Penelope. 

While the rest of the team talked to her, Spencer stood up and left the conference room. As soon as he did, Aaron followed him. He hadn’t had a chance to really talk to Reid yet and even though he didn’t want to confront his feelings, he felt a pull to the professor that he couldn’t explain.

“Is everything alright, Reid?” Aaron asked, watching as the younger man sat in a chair outside the conference room.

“I- Have you looked at the victims?” Spencer asked. Aaron nodded, signaling for Spencer to continue, “They’re all in their early 30s, tall, slim… They have medium length brown hair and…”

“They all look like you.” Aaron finished Reid’s sentence.

“Yeah and… I have cards at all of those libraries.” Reid said. Aaron took a deep breath.

“We should tell the others.”

“No- I mean, not yet… It could be a coincidence… Let's just wait a bit and if anything else connects to me then we can tell them.” Reid said, looking at Aaron with a pleading expression. Aaron nodded.

“Okay, but you and I will work this angle, okay?” 

“Yeah, got it.” 

“Why don’t you go home and get some rest. It’s getting late and don’t you have an early class?” 

“Yeah, I’ll see you tomorrow.” He said, standing and starting to leave the department.

“Wait, do you need a ride?” Aaron asked. Spencer paused and turned to look at the older man. They both stared at each other for a moment, Aaron felt  heat rush to his face.

“No… Not this time.” Spencer said before he was gone

The team had just finished up with the LDSK case in Illinois. It had been a lot for the whole team, but especially for Spencer and Aaron. Aaron knew that Spencer understood why everything had happened the way that it did, but he couldn’t help himself from feeling bad.

“Do you want a ride home?” Aaron asked, as he and Spencer walked to the elevators. Spencer thought for a moment, he really didn’t want to ride the metro this late, and it would be faster for Aaron to drive him, so he looked at his boss.

“Yeah, I’d appreciate that.” Spencer said, his boss gave him a smile and Spencer felt as if he may melt. He’d had a crush on the older Agent ever since he joined the BAU, but he knew he could never act on it.

“Okay.” Aaron said, gripping his go bag tighter, “Reid, I just wanted to… I’m sorry, really, I-”

“It’s okay, Hotch, no hard feelings. You did what you had to do.” Spencer said, doing his best to reassure Aaron.

“I know, and… Well, I just hope that you aren’t in too much pain.” Aaron looked at Spencer, who gave him a reassuring smile.

“It’s not that bad, I’ve had worse.” Spencer said, just as the elevator doors opened. Aaron led Spencer to his car and opened the back so they could put their bags in. 

The Drive to Spencer’s apartment was filled with a comfortable silence and the soft sound of the radio. Spencer looked out the window at the buildings that passed. As they pulled up to his apartment, Spencer unbuckled and turned to grab his bag out of the back. As soon as he did, he winced from the pain coursing through his ribs.

“Shit…” He murmured softly, turning back around. Aaron noticed this. He pulled into a parking spot and put the car in park.

“Here, I’ll get it.” He said, reaching back and getting Spencer’s bag out for him, “I’ll walk you to your apartment.” Aaron offered. Spencer bit his lip and nodded.

“Okay.” He murmured, getting out of the car. Aaron followed suit and followed the younger man up to his apartment. Spencer unlocked the door and pushed it open, allowing Aaron to enter before him. 

“Your place is nice.” Aaron said, “Um, where should I put this?” He gestured to the bag in his hand.

“Oh, you can set it by the door there.” Spencer said. Aaron dropped the bag in the spot indicated.

“Do you need anything else? I could get your pain meds for you or-”

“Its alright, Aaron, I’m fine.” Spencer said. Aaron nodded, but he noticed how Spencer was now holding himself, as if in a lot of pain.

“Can- I mean, do you mind showing me?” Aaron asked, his voice quieter than it had been before. Spencer’s face flushed, but he lifted his shirt to show his bruise covered torso. Aaron winced.

“It, um, it hurts pretty bad.” Spencer whispered. Aaron reached toward the younger agent before he could stop himself and gently caressed the man’s skin. Spencer sighed, Aaron’s cold hands provided some relief from the hot pain he felt. Aaron moved closer, running his hands to the doctor’s sides and then rested them on his hips. Spencer let his shirt drop and he looked into Aaron’s eyes.

“Maybe… Maybe I could distract you from the pain.” Aaron whispered. The two stared at each other for a silent moment before they were both leaning in for a tentative kiss. It was slow, but deliberate. Aaron pulled Spencer closer to him and Spencer relaxed into the kiss. They pulled apart when the need for air grew stronger than the need for each other.

“I- I would like that.” Spencer murmured.

Spencer entered his apartment, alone. He hadn’t stopped thinking about Aaron his whole way home. He hadn’t thought about… their first time in so long and it made him want to run back to the police station and take the older Agent right then and there. Part of him wished that he had stayed, that he had admitted to having feelings for Aaron, but it was too late for that.

He set his messenger bag down on the counter and began to fix himself a cup of coffee. As it brewed, he moved to his fridge, inspecting its contents. There wasn’t much, and he figured he would need to do a grocery run soon. He pulled out some lunch meat and he ate a couple of pieces. In the middle of one piece, his phone buzzed, so he sat his snack down to check the email he had just received.

Spencer hummed, thinking ahead. This case was taking a lot of effort, but he still had students to help. He quickly typed a reply, scheduling the meeting for the day the student had requested. He set his phone down and began preparing his cup of coffee.

Back at the precinct, Aaron was reading over some of the files Garcia had sent over on the students, librarians, and professors. He couldn’t stop thinking of the conversation with Spencer, though. The victims all did bear a striking resemblance to the man. He set the files down and dialed Garcia again.

“All the answers you could need are just a click away, so direct my clicks to suit your needs.” Came the dramatic voice of Penelope.

“Listen, I need you to get a list of all of Spencer’s students, past and present.” Aaron said, hoping none of the others would come in and hear the conversation.

“Okay, its a long list… Is there anything to narrow this down?”

“Well, look at males… Are there any that are ages 25-30?”

“That does narrow it down a little, anything else?”

“Can you see if any of them have used any of the libraries near the crime scene?” He heard typing.

“You’ve got 60 names.” She said,

“Okay, send me those files.”

“You got it, boss. They’re sent.” She said before hanging up the phone. Aaron tucked his phone back in his pocket and began going through the files that she had sent over on his tablet.

Aaron and Spencer were both staring at the ceiling, both trying to figure out what, exactly, they just did. They were both still trying to catch their breath a little bit and it was clear that things were very different between them now. Aaron was the first to break the silence.

“That was… Wow…” He murmured. Spencer laughed a bit and looked over to the older man,

“Yeah… Wow… We- We can never tell anyone about this.” Spencer said, Aaron looked at him,

“Yeah, no… This could… it would be bad for both of us.” Aaron said, sitting up. Spencer didn’t think he could sit up if he tried. There was still so much pain in his ribs, even though Aaron had been slow and taken care not to irritate his injury.

“Are you… I mean, you have to get home, right?” Spencer said, hoping that his disappointment wasn’t obvious. Aaron nodded and began gathering his clothes together.

“Yeah, uh, I… Well, we have work tomorrow and I’ll need clothes and a shower and… Well…” Spencer nodded, watching as Aaron pulled his clothes back on. Part of Spencer wanted to beg the older man to stay and hold him and wake up with him and have breakfast and- Spencer shook his head.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.” He offered instead, Aaron turned to look at him, the absolutely beautiful man who was leaning up on his elbows. The sheets covered his bottom half, but his pale bruised skin was on display. Aaron wanted nothing more than to go back and leave some more bruises on the younger man’s neck, preferably using his own mouth, but he pushed the thought away.

“Of course.” Aaron said, “See you tomorrow.” and then he was gone. Spencer heard the door of his apartment shut and he considered locking it, but the pain in his body stopped him and he was soon asleep.

On Tuesday, Spencer woke up at 7 am. His first class started at 9 am. He took a quick shower and brushed his teeth, then moved on to getting coffee made, then he grabbed a banana and his coffee cup and he was out the door by 7:45. 

Spencer lived only a 20 minute walk from campus, so that’s what he chose to do for the day. It would give him time to think about the case that he was helping on. Spencer thought about the current victim… He felt like he should be doing more to find the man, but he also knew that the 7 best profilers were on the case. 

He approached the building where his classroom resided, and he saw a box sitting on the bench close to the door. He looked around for anyone who could’ve left it and he thought maybe he should turn it in to the lost and found, but then he say his name scrawled on a piece of paper taped to the top. He picked up the box and carried it back to his classroom.

Once in the safety of his classroom, Spencer carefully opened the box to find a deep red tie inside under another note. The note was folded into the shape of a heart  and done on a deep red paper to match the tie. Because of the case, he grabbed some exam gloves out of his desk drawer and put them on before lifting the note and carefully unfolding it.

“Hotch?” Spencer asked, as soon as he answered.

“Yeah? Is everything okay?” 

“No, no you need to get down here and… Oh god… The unsub sent me a heart in a box.” Spencer said, choking a bit on his words.

“We’re on our way.” Aaron said, quickly ending the call. Spencer pulled out his phone and sent an email to his students, informing them that class for today would be canceled

A couple of things that have stood out to me after reading this essay (which if you haven't read yet, please do). While watching both seasons I kept drawing parallels to the Bible (thanks religious upbringing, at least now you're worth something!). I just can't shake the feeling that the clues for what's going on are there. Warning, there will be spoilers and Bible shit below!

Why is Metatron editing The Book of Life? Why is he fucking with certain events?

Babes. He says it himself: "We call it the Second Coming".

Okay, please hear me out. The Bible is pretty clear on what events must occur in order to bring about the Second Coming of Christ, and I think that this holds the key for how weird this season was.

1. There will be someone that impersonates Christ

Matthew 24:5 "For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many."

To me this means one of two things.

1: The Antichrist as a false prophet, who we have already seen.

2: We will at some point, if we haven’t already, see someone fully impersonate the Son of God.

2. There will be wars, famines, pestilences, and deaths.

But wait, isn't that just The Four Horseman? Yes. Specifically, Matthew 24:7 states that “all these are the beginning of sorrows”, so we already have this checked off our list of criteria through the events of S1.

3. The Word of God will spread globally

Matthew 24:14 “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”

In S2E3 we see Aziraphale being extremely preachy about the body-snatching, determined to put Elspeth on the path of righteousness. He also states at the end of E6 that “Heaven, well, it’s the side of truth, of light, of good. If I’m in charge, I can make a difference”. Perhaps in S3 he will further lean into this promotion of God’s Word?

4. There will be signs in the Heavens

Matthew 24:30 “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”

I'm not sure if there's anything in S2 yet as I'll need to watch it again, but we are looking for some heavy symbolism.

5. The dead shall rise from their graves

John 5:28-29 “Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.”

Look, I get that I could be reaching, but to me this explains A LOT of weird shit. In her essay @ariaste mentions that "The Resurrectionists has to be meaningful as a thing", and then later that ridiculous zombie plot is "taking up so much space that is has to be doing something".

THIS IS THE SOMETHING.

Metatron is editing this particular bit of history in order to meet this certain criteria point of the Second Coming. The dead have been resurrected.

Other Bible Verses I think are Important™

Matthew 24:31

"And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other."

Four winds: Michael, Uriel, Saraqael, and now Aziraphale. 

Matthew 6:12

"And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors."

I just think this is interesting in correlation to Aziraphale forgiving Maggie's rent debts tbh. But why does Aziraphale need forgiveness?

Matthew 24:28

"For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together."

In the opening credits, in the first scene portraying the events of Job there is a crow sitting very close to an animal skeleton. In the opening credits the novel The Crow Road is shown TWICE on two seats at the magic show. In one seat sits a rabbit statue and on the other appears to be a green hat. Later, Muriel is reading this book. Aziraphale is nearly shot in said magic show, which would discorporate his body (a carcass?!).

Matthew 24:40

"Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left."

This particular verse in the Bible outlines some smaller things that will occur during Second Coming. Aziraphale has been taken back to Heaven, Crowley has been left behind.

Conclusion

I think Metatron has been specifically manipulating the Book of Life throughout Season 2, and potentially Season 1, in order to facilitate the Second Coming of Christ. But because Metatron''s writing is sloppy, he made things like Nazi zombies to check the criteria off his list to make it happen as soon as possible.
