Silver Arrows To The Heart by @evermorepeyton (137k WIP)- this one is a duplicate from the other list but there might be a few on here, ignore that<3 anyway this fic is AMAZING!!! dan and phil formula 1 drivers au- they're both on Mercedes and lots of awesome teammates to lovers hijinks ensue<3 this one gets a special shoutout for having some fantastic female characters (who are dare i say just as intriguing as dnp themselves?) and also bc the author is a beautiful human who i love<3 a super fun fic and very in character for both of them (somehow lmao, you wouldnt expect it with racecar drivers but somehow it works so well)

dancing on the blades (you set my heart on fire) by kishere (123k)- imagine all the 2009 phan lore but if dan and phil were figure skaters. yep, it's a yuri on ice au where dan scores a spot in the famous Lester training gym and meets phil, who is one of the most well known figure skaters in england<3 fantastic fantastic fic, such perfect vibes and lots of great lester family cameos<3

Strictly Come Dancing but make it GAY! by @natigail (176k)- the final duplicate from the medium list<3 this fic is AMAZING!!!! this is the one that got me back into phanfic in general afterhaving not read any for about 6 years, it's a strictly come dancing au where phil is a hot pro dancer and dan is a celebrity/gay activist, and they accidentally become the first gay couple to compete in scd<3 FANTASTIC outfit and dance descriptions, i listened to all the songs while reading it and it was honestly so lovely i felt like i could see it so clearly<3 also- the lore references are AMAZING lol i felt like a pro every time i found a little easter egg. amazing fic, i HIGHLY recommend it<3

A Semester Abroad by @everything-is-as-it-was (162k WIP)- this one is really fun!! lots of domestic phouse vibes as it is about an american college student who gets stranded in England after a study abroad housing situation falls through and who gets accidentally taken in by these two random british guys with a REALLY weird house... sooo funny, it's really quite cute and i highly recommend giving it a read! I love outsider pov and this has an abundance of funny moments because dnp are Weird

Broke, Gay and New in Town by @natigail (347k)- do you want the softest, cutest, most magical and compelling story to ever exist??? literally look no further because right here is the dan and phil stardew valley au and it is SO CUTE!!! dan inherits a farm from his grandfather and decides to ditch his boring life to go and run it, and he has so many adventures along the way. oh yeah phil is there too and hes SO CUTE and they fall in love :3 seriously so cute, also you don't need stardew valley knowledge to enjoy this it is independently perfect (i have never played the game and actually learned what it was From this fic so ur good lol)

linger on by dizzy, waveydnp (184k)- this one is so so so sweet... non youtuber au where 33yo phil has been living with his parents, but when his dad dies his mom decides to sell the house and phil has to find somewhere new to live. so ofc he becomes roommates with some guy called dan, and ummm they fall in love? honestly they are SO perfect in this fic, i adore it<3 highly recommend

L'Histoire Française by danfanciesphil (105k)- suuuuper fun teachers au! phil is a history professor and dan is his TA. this fic is SO FUN!!!! genuinely adore it lol, it's one of the first phan fics i ever read and it has stayed with me forever<3

So Many Stars by transdimensional_void (152k)- another teachers au :) dnp meet when they both become english teachers at a school in japan and this is VERY cute <3

Not sure if I'm supposed to keep this to just asking questions, but I needed to gush and I'm not good at ao3 comment etiquette.

I stumbled across TTB on complete accident after seeing this meme and picked it up just for the heck of it, and BOY WAS I IN FOR A HECK OF A RIDE(R. haha, get it?) OR WHAT? But I felt a little out of place and like an outsider because

I entered the Phandom for the first time exactly 31 days ago and my only knowledge comes from the >5 episodes I watched before I got bored and dropped it years ago (and promptly ejected from my brain), and then fanfiction I have been VIOLENTLY AND CONSISTANTLY CONSUMING LIKE A RABID VACUUM for the last month when I got interested in it again.

I had literally never heard of Alex Rider before this fic.

I like SCP, but all my knowledge comes from a podcast I listen to but they're going numerically and they've only gotten up to SCP-123, oh and and Markiplier.

THAT BEING SAID, I didn't need to worry because this is one of the best fics I've ever read. It has LITERALLY been keeping me up at night staring at the ceiling because I couldn't freaking stop thinking about it.

It stands out in a crowd, and out of the all MANY crossovers I've read in my time, TTB is one of, like, four fics that I can confidently say feel like their own original fiction, one cohesive world that's well blended, each media and character perfectly meshed and interacting with eachother and the lore like they always belonged together.

Deadass, I sent the fic to my sibling immediately after I finished it because I needed someone to scream about it to even though they understand even less of the source material than I, and we've decided to watch the Alex Rider show together and they told me "I'm going to be sad when we watch this and Danny isn't canon".

Fantastic work, massive kudos for making one of the best feels-like-it's-not-a-crossover crossovers. I was hooked by the first few paragraphs, so suspenseful, on the edge of my seat the entire time, and I lost so much sleep and sanity to this masterpiece. Y'all rock.

I’ve had so much fun with you all this year, had to join in on the end of year sappy posting! I wish I had the talent to make gifs (maybe a goal for the next year 🤔) but alas, here is my top 5 phandom moments of the year in screenshots:

5. Phlonde

HUGE cultural moment. TIT wouldn’t be the same without blond Phil. The Sister Daniel x blonde Phil art was so good, and then Dan rolling his eyes so hard at how blonde Phil isn’t a persona it’s just Phil, how dare we ship his boyfriend with someone who isn’t the Real Dan. So many wonderful photos of Phil have come from this important endeavor. But most important of all was learning that Dan fainted and punched a lamp when seeing phlonde for the first time, and Phil thought he was doing some celebratory twerking. Absolutely iconic, no one is doing it like Phillip Lester.

4. The WAD broadcast

I didn’t really start getting into the phandom until the gaming channel return (I’m so new, I know 😆), but I wasn’t that active posting on tumblr until this year, and the WAD stream was the first phandom Event I felt like I was really present for! It was so fun getting dressed up, ordering a pizza and some dips, and live-blogging with everyone that day. I know it wasn’t the most impactful event for the phandom landscape this year, but it was a big day for me :). I think that’s the first time I posted phandom analysis! Plus the “remote crisis manager of it all,” omg.

3. No But Seriously…

I know this is a top moment for almost everyone, but it’s a classic for a reason omg. Not just the video itself, but the fact that they were willing to make it for us! Fulfilling a tumblr prophecy just because we said pleeeeease. I was working on a school assignment till late that night, and I kept periodically refreshing tumblr anyways and enjoying reading everyone’s theories as we hoped. They love us so bad <3

2. The RPF tournament

It was so much fun checking in on the polls on my lunch break in the weeks of the tournament, campaigning with you all and keeping our title as the most annoying fandom on the internet, but like in a camp way now 😆. And then to have Phil reblog it in the final hour? Jaw drop moment, took me hours to recover. The Dan reblog the next morning followed by multiple mentions in interviews and videos was just *chefs kiss* dads supporting our interests <3

1. Red Bank TIT

Seeing TIT in Philly was already amazing, but I feel so lucky that I was able to see it twice! I was so overwhelmed by the content of the show the first time, I’m so glad I went again and got to take the time so talk to several lovely people. I’ve never been the best at being social, so thank you to this community for being so wonderful and always feeling like such a safe place, online and IRL! That day was one of my overall best days of the year, even with the 5 hours of driving I did 😆

Truly, thank you all for such great 2024! My top 5 dnp videos or top 5 most insane dnp actions would be a different post; I wanted to highlight all the moments shared with you all that made this year so special. I love posting analysis and reading all of your tag thoughts in response, and I’m so happy to have posted my first fic in nearly 4 years this month :). Here’s to another phantastic year 🧡🧡!

hiiiii dear mutual! thxgiving has been okay ish, im currently eating food in my sisters room feeling a lil under weather but its okay ^_^ i rewatched what dnp text each other 4 like two ish days ago and it's been on my mind since... they're so silly and i can't WAIT for wdapteo 5!!! we haven't seen a wdapteo with them both being on tour since the original one, and also now they're like loudly gayer. i'm wondering if we'll see behind the scenes of calendar or no but seriously imagine it... etc. i dunno im just rambling but yeah ^_^

all im doing today is im going to finish this food go to my room, play some pokemon stuff while watching another content creator's vod. and then at like 9 pm i'll spend 4 hours in a frenzy writing phanfic again :)

im starting to hope theyll go on tour again in the future bc i do actually want to meet them with every passing day, but i cant believe i got to see them at TIT at all! that's so cool! im also wondering what they're going to do for the holidays? i hope not a full gamingmas that sounds like wayyyy too tiring for them, but! insta stories... maybe dan tags along to another lester thing...

HELLO MY BELOVED MARETUAL <3333 this is the exact kind of ask i wanted tysm for the yap :3 wdapteo 4 was literally my most rewatched video this year according to youtube lmao so it's safe to say i LOVE it, absolutely solid rewatch choice and i also cannot WAIT for wdapteo 5!! they're just suuuch good videos with silly bants/insight into daily dnp shenanigans obviously and i think there will be good tidbits this year maybe with tour planning and stuff?? and it's like the one video we're pretty much guaranteed at this point (i remember last year when i had lost hope we would get it and then we did! with a mention of "next installment") so yeah that is also defo keeping me going rn.

that sounds fun i hope the food is yummy!! i'm excited to see what you're working on, that's a solid fic writing time i also was sat in front of a doc from 9pm to like. 3am last night (that sounds like i was absolutely grinding away but a lot of breaks to curate my playlists and stress so very little actual writing lol) but gonna try again today. i literally go to sleep thinking about them and then dream of them the phannie brainrot goes crazy but it's also fun :3

i feel the same way omg, sometimes it's still sooo hard for me to conceptualize that i actually saw them irl?? this year?? they're real?? didn't get to meet them but would also love to one day, they're so pretty even from a distance. even with all the tit discussions we have on here and seeing so many friends/moots/whoever on here describe their experiences i try not to forget just how grateful i am for still being here in the phandom that i got the opportunity to see such an incredible show, them as their happiest and most open and free selves, it's so cool<33 with the way they've been talking in interviews i have soo much hope about the future, that there's fun stuff coming after the tour too and just. how cool is that!! i honestly hope they just have a relaxing break with their families they deserve it, but yes insta stories would be everything and im still hung up on that story of phil's mum giving dan snowballs while he was editing at their house at christmastime like dan and the lesters is so dear to me <3

i yapped SO much in return omg lmao but im okay! very unexciting non holiday day for me over here lol, went grocery shopping and that's pretty much it. i'm looking for a job rn so the stress of that is kinda always lingering in the back of my mind and it's driving me a liiitle crazy but hopefully something comes up soon! i need a phupload to distract me from the horrors </3

a year on from this i thought i'd add some new info that is kinda interesting (didn't look back into everything since this took bloody ages before and i cba to go into that much detail again lol it's just a few highlights lol):

so most of the data hasn't changed much other than there being more fics (the general rpf tag went up by about 110k which is honestly incredible impressive like amazing work lads lol!!!!)

some things that have changed that i found intriguing are:

greg davies x alex horne have surpassed 1k fics woop woop! (they were on about 700 this time last yr)

in general i think it was a p good year for british comedy rpf! taskmaster and wilty still being the top fandoms! also nice to note that there nearly are as many david mitchell x lee mack fics as david x charlie brooker (which i'm STILL confused by) fics so i'm counting that as a win lol!

seems to have been a poor year for spn rpf since it only went up by about 200 rip... jensen is still the most written about actor tho so congrats lol

chinese actor rpf went up by 3k proving yet again that chinese fans are the rpf GODS and we should all bow down to them lol

in terms of wlw a lot of the stuff seems to have remained the same (still a lot of male characters in the f/f categories) BUT there are two new ships that i discovered in some of the tags including love x milk (two thai gl actors) and karina x winter (members of the kpop group aespa) which is honestly kinda exciting!!! neither have a tonne of fics to their names but it's still amazing to see!

ok so something weird was that when i looked up the phandom it seemed that only 700 more dnp fics were written in that year which i KNOW is a lie so i think i must have gotten the number wrong last yr? idk how i made such a big mistake and i'm DEVASTATED now my data is inaccurate waaahhh

one thing i did find w/ dnp is that there are now 106 extra fics that only feature dan and not phil lol

i didn't look back into the sports data cos... i can't be bothered lol...

i'm assuming things haven't changed that much tho lol

not much has changed in the music rpf section except now the 2nd most popular fandom in the f/f category is a band called BINI from the Philippines which honestly i am 100% here for <3 hell yes! (they also feature heavily in the characters and ships, though taylor swift is still number one here lol...)

but yeah that's about all i can be bothered to do rn lol it's lunch time and i'm hungry

but as i said in the original post i know this is like a silly ridiculous thing to do that literally no one else is probably interested in, but i just kinda like looking into this what can i say!

ok so i spent yesterday looking through and collecting data from ao3's rpf (real person fanfiction) collection (for no reason other than 'i was intrigued' lol...)

and i thought i'd go through some of the interesting finds!

(this is probably interesting to nobody but me but hey when has that ever stopped me lol!)

starting with a disclaimer that this is a judgement free zone! i may make a few jokes about things from time to time on here, but i am firmly of the 'ship and let ship' mindset so no hate meant in any of this at all lol <3

first interesting fact is that kpop is the highest rpf tag (with over 650k works!!), bts are obviously the boy group with the most fics, with twice being the highest girl group!

speaking of girls... so for every category i tried to find what the top f/f ship was and for a couple of the tags (most notably actors and music), the top f/f ships were actually male characters (which confused me until i saw the additional tags were genderbend and genderswap lol)... there are also a lot of fandoms where the top characters when you take out m/m ships is actually original female characters (or reader)!

unsurprisingly, taylor swift is the solo artist with the most fics written about her (many shipping her with various celebs, both men and women), but what i found interesting is that there are 140 of her songs and albums that are featured in fics, which is more than any other musician's work (even hozier lol!)

other music tag info is one direction as the non-kpop band with the most fics, with larry stylinson being the top ship (no one is shocked at this) and the highest rating being explicit! which is a bit surprising since most of these fandoms have either general or teen and up ratings as the top one... the only other umbrella rpf fandom that has explicit as the top rating is actors... oh and porn (duh)

my chemical romance deserve a mention as the band with the most fics under the rock music tag (and in the bandom tag), with gerard as the top character (good for them!)! queen also rank pretty highly, with a lot of the fics being specifically linked to the 2018 film bohemian rhapsody rather than specifically the band themselves (so it's like... rpf of rpf lol?)

i think the beatles are the oldest band/musician to have a lot of rpf about them but it's honestly a little hard to tell so don't quote me on this... they are also at the top of the 60's music scene, where the rolling stones take 2nd lol...

the rpf section that i went into the most blind was the sports tag, since my knowledge of sports is .......... yeh that's about all i know lol

men's football and hockey have a similar number of fics each (a little over 30k), though the top character in the sports tag is max verstappen who is actually a racing driver so ??? confused noises lol

anyway idrc about the men (this is a joke ofc @ men i love you), what i DO care about is that women's football (and this is specifically the soccer kind not the american lol) has the highest femslash fics, and i looked up tobin heath (who was the top character in this section) and lemme just say that i Get it lol...

wwe and formula 1 are some other sports that have a significant number of fics in the, filled with people i've never heard of before pfft... i will say that most of the sports have general as their top rating, except for hockey which has explicit (i feel like theirs some kinda joke i could make here about playing with sticks but i'm not gonna lol... especially since most sports already play with balls so?)

anyway enough about sports lol, let's return to something i'm much more comfortable with: youtubers!

youtube is actually the 2nd most written about category (next to kpop, with nearly 280k fics) with minecraft youtubers (the top character being tommyinnit) being the most written about!

what i found most fascinating about this is that 8 out of the 10 top ships in this tag are platonic (and 1 is actually just the 'no romantic relationships' tag lol... the top ship overall is still a slash pairing, but it's still interesting that such a big fandom has mainly platonic pairings!)

also even though the phandom have nowhere near the amount of fics as minecraft youtube, i found it kinda funny that there are (as of writing this) only 95 more fics featuring dan than phil (essentially saying that literally nearly 99% of the fics feature the both of them lol... phandom really said 'co-dependency' and i respect that lol)

moving on to actors, which i expected to have a lot more fics than it does given a lot of rpf involves the actors of characters in popular fictional ships (i mean there are still a lot, over 130k lol...) and supernatural takes the crown of having the most fics of this category! j2 is the top ship, though the 3rd top ship in the actors tag is actually tom hiddleston x original female character! i think because of this british actors are the highest subsection of actors, followed by chinese actors!

i think i did expect the chinese actors to have more fics, but i'm guessing the smaller number is because of the whole xiao zhan ao3 drama from a few years ago... wang yibo x xiao zhan still make up the most popular ship, plus there are plenty of other c-dramas and other chinese shows that have a big number of fics that don't fall under the chinese actor umbrella tag (so the number probably would be a lot larger if i went through and counted them... but i'm not gonna)... similar thing with thai actors, which only has a couple thousand fics in the tag, but there are a whole lot more fics dedicated to rpf of specific actors on specific shows (from a quick glance i think tharntype and kinnporsche are a couple of the highest fandoms? but i didn't go through everything cos i'd already been doing this for a few hours and i was getting sleeeeeby lol...)

one thing that intrigued me was the british comedy category (which is the top comedy category lol! we did it lads we finally came top with something!), where would i lie to you and taskmaster were the top fandoms! david mitchell was the top character and, kinda bizarrely imo, david x charlie brooker was the top ship (i feel like i'm missing some kinda big thing in the british comedy fandom ngl lol... but like really? you ship david with charlie brooker when robert webb, his actual comedy partney, is RIGHT there? or even lee mack i'm ??? ok ok i'm getting off topic pfft...)

oh greg davies and alex horne are also a popular ship in this category ofc (though they have less than 1000 fics lol!)

the final umbrella category of rpf that i could find was historical, which is the tag with the least amount of fics (under 20k), with alexander hamilton and various other american specific historical figures making up the bulk of the popular historical fics (these are mainly tired to the musical hamilton btw)!

the top characters and ship when narrowed down to just the f/f of the historical tag is mostly original female characters btw!

there are also fics of other public figures, like politics, porn, journalists and chefs, and probably the most intriguing facts i found from this section are that hillary clinton is the most popular character in the 21st century us politics section, joe biden and donald trump are the 4th most popular ship (with the reoccurring additional tag of 'crack fic' lol), and though it isn't in the top stats, when i went into the pundit and journalist tag the first few fics to pop up were ben shapiro x matt walsh explicit stuff which was... uh... interesting lol

final thing i'll note is that i stuck mainly to ao3 for this because though i know places like wattpad have a large rpf collection too, but it's so bloody HARD to find data about fics on that site pfft... though i think one thing that would be shown by looking into wattpad's rpf community is that whereas ao3 has a lot of shipping content (obviously), wattpad has a lot more reader x celebrity (but like take this with a pinch of salt since i've not actually done the research for this part pfft...)

Chaos Dragon - works are split between (sometimes mature) Danny/Sam and some of the hardest hitting tragedies I've read in the phandom

Cordria (ao3) - The Place To Begin!!! Several hundred fics once you factor in the oneshot collections, covering literally every genre under the sun and angst that will change you forever

Danny Phantom SG-1 - the author who taught me that fanfiction was designed to be a vessel for angst, will bash you over the head with your own feelings

HaiJu (ao3) - one of the most polished and highly recommended authors in the phandom for a very very good reason

Laora (ao3) - one of my favorite authors of all time, and creator of Empty Promises (ao3) aka the angstiest fic in the phandom

Nylah - fantastically atmospheric angst that I literally have not been able to stop thinking about since I first read them

Phantomrose96 (ao3) - All Of The Angst. Also "it's not gay if he's dead." And no matter where it falls on the angst-to-crack spectrum, it's excellent

Shenzuul - such well written, grounded fics that I keep coming back to read them over and over again

surelysilly (ao3) - incredibly evocative writing style that immediately paints the atmosphere, some really great creepy angsty stuff

Everything else under the sun (including more angst!)

avearia (ao3) - soooooooo many good fics omgggggg

CoronaIgnis - leader in the Ghost King Danny trope, really amazing world building

dpluver - Queen of Snarky Danny and some of my favorite funny and/or fluffy fics in the phandom

KicsterAsh - wonderfully feel-good series about Danny becoming an astronaut

Lacey52 - really well developed trio-focused series with incredible characterization, Danny/Sam

Lynse (ao3) - so so many good fics that it blows my mind (and all sorts of crossovers)

mabel-but-slytherin (ao3) - really intricately thought out theories and premises and crossovers

MsFrizzle - great oneshots and fics with canonically Jewish Sam

MyAibou (ao3) - incredibly well crafted fics and series that explore all the things that the show could have been, it's amazing

pearl84 - author of the biggest fics in the phantom like Checkmate and Dawning of the Sun

PixieGirl13 - so many nice long action-packed fics with some of the best Danny and Vlad interactions out there, some of my absolute faves

PuppetMaster55 (ao3) - angst and romance and crossovers (oh my!!)

sapphireswimming (ao3) - 100+ gen works including plenty of angst, hurt/comfort, friendship, humor (and superphantom crossovers)

SRL541 - not too many fics but every single one of them is so good??

Looking back, I'm really glad I decided to sign up for @invisobang last year as an artist from the perspective of a non-traditional-artist. I honestly wasn't even going to sign up for it at first because I, like many others, had a lot of self-doubt about 1. skills, and 2. "no one will want this for their fic." It was only after a lot (and I cannot stress enough: a LOT) of back and forth with @kinglazrus, @bibliophilea, as well as others participating in invisobang that I signed up for it at all. And I'm so glad I did!

I won't say that all my fears went away overnight, but as soon as I got the courage to really take that plunge into the work, I realize that all my insecurities were kind of silly. Because it was really REALLY fun!

Making music for fanfiction was incredibly cool. I've never done it before, so it was challenging yet ultimately very rewarding. I got to play around with different instrumentation, chords, and soundscapes. I was able to reflect on symbolic things, such as, "What does space sound like? What do stars sound like?" and "Does this capture the mood I'm trying to portray?" I got to take different elements and characters like Clockwork, Vlad, Danny, fear, hope, etc., and bury their themes and ideas around the different pieces. I thought about things like tension vs release, the expansion vs compression of sound.

Did I nail everything perfectly? Was I The Best Composer That Ever Did Compose A Piece Of Music? No, of course not. I'm not some amazing, professional composer/conductor like Hans Zimmer, nor do I have access to a limitless library of twelve million dollars worth of equipment and instruments. I got what I got, but I was still able to make something that I'm really proud of and that I think represented the fic well.

So as we gear up for another year of phandom events, I hope this message is able to reach some people who maybe are insecure and hesitant to try like I was. Because I went from, "I'd love to but there's no way I'd ever sign up as an artist, I'm just not good enough/traditional/not what a writer would want" to now, "OH MY GOD I CANNOT FUCKING WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE AHHHHHHHKSJDHJDHFBJHBF!"

(Also, as a writer, I should have known my fears were unfounded. I go fucking feral when ANYTHING, regardless of skill, is made for my fics. Assuming my creations would be an exception to this rule and not part of the norm is Not How That Works.)

Do you happen to have any fic recs for the Danny Phantom content you loved?

Oh man, I have gone through so many fics it's kind of hard to pick and choose. The Phandom is wildly creative, and it is really hard to narrow things down.

I can give a few, at least? I'll try to do sort of a tasting menu of different genres. This is nowhere near a full list of my favorites, I'm just trying to show examples of what sorts of stories are out there.

Something's Wrong With Danny Fenton - This is a horror interpretation of the concept, where the ghosts are a lot more ghostly. Starts with Sam and Tucker not knowing Danny or that he is Phantom, and there's (spoilers?) some very sweet scenes when the two learn his secret and accept him as he is. A+ eerie ghost stuff.

Tucker Foley and the Long Arc of the Paranormal Universe - An AU where Tucker is a psychic, Sam is a witch, Danny is a ghost portal, and there's a serial killer stalking Amity Park. The central mystery plot is the driving force of the story here, and it's one of those fanfics that honestly could be a standalone urban fantasy/mystery/horror novel if you filed the DP serial numbers off. Tucker-centric, which I love, and there's some pretty interesting reinterpretations of canon characters. The main trio have an interesting rock-scissors-paper power dynamic that lets each of them cover the weaknesses the others have to various supernatural powers in this universe.

Product Reviews - Danny reviews his parents' inventions on Not-Amazon. Amazing, perfect, hilarious, Wes Weston makes a cameo, I love it.

Improbable, Not Impossible - College-age Danny is caught by his parents, and the only one who could help in time is Vlad. This is a good example of two of my favorite tropes: 1) a villain reluctantly coming to the rescue (while still being kind of evil) and 2) a short story pared down to the bone, presenting an interesting concept and then leaving you to imagine how it plays out. The final line in this story had me actively yelling in my room.

But First, A Word Of Instruction - Danny's having trouble with anxiety, and Clockwork gives him an old book that may have some useful advice. Danny Phantom is famously queer-coded despite...*waves vaguely at the entirety of Butch Hartman*. This story, specifically the passage from the book that Danny was given, made me, a trans person, feel so many Trans Emotions that I actually started crying and had to walk away from my computer for a bit.

Mortified - The Legend Itself. A story that actively tries to hit virtually every popular DP trope at least once. Massive, popular, compelling, directly inspired multiple new fandom tropes. I may be slightly biased towards Mortified.

Okay, I think I’ve finally managed to put my complicated feelings about Danny Phantom into words

So right off the bat i’m gonna say there is good in the show, and I’m glad so many people have found enjoyment and community in the phandom space, absolutely love to see it. But at it’s core, this is a white show. And i’m not just talking about the lead character is white, i mean everything from the character design to personalities to even the vibes it puts off if you think about it for more than 30sec at a time, it just screams WASP and as someone who is very much not that makes it harder to look past it’s flaws. 

Again, I like making content for the show, some of my favorite people I’ve met on this hellsite have come from this circle, but there’s always a part of me that thinks: I keep doing it because it’s the easy road. At it’s height Danny Phantom was damn near a global phenomenon and there are still tons of vocal fans so the engagement is easy and since it’s fanwork there’s not as much pressure (to me, I know some others think differently and that’s why y’all need to be reblogging and communicating with creators more if you want them to continue to create for you). It’s a lot easier for me to go “well i can fix that” with someone elses recipe than to go through the trial and error of building from the bottom, and tbh I’m leaning on that heavy. That only goes so far though, I have tons of fics about Maurice and Angela and Tucker and Damon and Valerie but then i’lll look at the source material and there’s always a flash of “actually, that’s more work for black characters than this show deserves from me” which is a WILDLY self destructive mindset if I want more content for said black characters. 

Also like... there are so many other shows that do more with less and better with the same building blocks, shows I love and want to talk about WAY more and have much more of a connection to but unfortunately didn’t manifest the following DP did (three guesses why)

The Secret Saturdays? Does the “monster hunter parents with monster adjacent kid” thing much better, better character dynamics and comedy and an A to B plot that doesn’t walk back things every other episode

Generator Rex? More consistent worldbuilding, much better creature design, amazing three seasons with fantastic payoff.

Tutenstein? I’m even throwing in Tutenstein since i know you could make the argument than DP is supposed to be more episodic than the other two series but even Tutenstein handles it’s mythology better, often with a much better comedic timing and the episodic flow because it doesn’t try to bite off more than it can chew with a bloated cast.

I could go on (special shout out to El Tigre, MLAATR, ATLA, and Static Shock who also fit in this lil chunk of my brain) but the point’s been made. I love the skeleton of the show but my god is the meat a mixed bag to me.

I apologize if this is an odd question but I'm curious. How did you get into Danny Phantom as a fandom? And what kept you around?

I didn't get into the Danny Phantom fandom. Danny Phantom got me into fandom.

Danny Phantom was my favorite show growing up, and I would still revisit it every couple years even as a teen. I liked playing around with what-ifs for the show in my head, just without knowing other people were doing that too.

When I was like 14, I knew the concept of fanfiction existed, but all of my exposure to it had been "it's all terrible Mary Sues and Self-Inserts." This was before fanfiction.net let you sort by anything beside most-recently-updated.

Then somehow (linked through something?) I found Lab Rat. and my angsty little 14 year old eyes were opened. There was GOOD fanfiction and it came with a metric fuckton of angst? (The very first piece of fanfiction I tried to write was a Lab Rat sequel, it just never really worked). This also led me to discover Cordria and I was hooked.

On a whim, 14-year-old me decided to throw my hat in the ring, and I wrote a gracelessly angsty 80,000 word DP fic based on a Cordria one-shot. It wasn't originally going to be 80,000 words. It was just a chapter or two I'd banged out as a Word doc sitting on my computer that I decided to post, and I was so starry-eyed seeing a handful of people engage with it that I kept going.

Then I kinda chilled for a year or two. In the meantime Phantom of Truth started publishing, which just reinvented all of my standards for everything fanfiction. That fic was extremely formative for the kind of angst writing I like to do.

When I was 16-ish (around 2013), I got back into another of my "rewatch Danny Phantom every couple of years" cycles. This time a friend had recently been trying to get me to join tumblr (not for fandom, just for tumblr), so I had the idea of checking if there was any kind of DP fandom on tumblr. Lo and behold it WAS and it was extremely active.

@kikaiz (ectolime at the time) was spear-heading a lot of the content. For a few weeks I was just silently scrolling the tag and her blog, until I had something I wanted to say about Ghost Speak so I made a blog to chime in.

It was just a really excellent fandom environment to jump into? Tons of fresh ideas being worked through, and always super collaboratively. Someone would coin something, and then a bunch of artists and writers would jump in to contribute. I hadn't written anything in a while, but decided to dust that off and join back in, which was a great time since there was so much interaction and back-and-forth (and a lot of yelling when angst was involved). Ghost Speak. Ghost Hunger. Lancer angst. Bloodblossom headcanons. Dannyversary prompts. Phanniemay. Everything was super interactive and super collaborative and a lot of fun.

It's actually kind of surprising how... uniquely good it is for that kind of engaged fandom experience? Many other fandoms I've dabbled in have been much more stand-offish, or isolated, or focused too much on canon or too much on shipping, or have only a handful of people producing all the popular content that everyone else silently consumed, (or one side of the fandom gets mad at the other side and tries to rip them apart by the throat not that thats ever happened to me nope. three year hiatus whom?).

I kinda come and go in the Phandom, and I think the Phandom itself waxes and wanes through periods of activity, but the fact that it's still going strong is amazing, and in a pretty similar spirit just with different darlings now (Wes, focus on the Casper High kids, Wes, cool redesigns, Wes). I definitely fell out for a period of time when things got super meme-y since that's not really my style, but I'm basically a cat, just leave the door unlocked and I'll wander in and out at my leisure. There's just such a hard-hitting passionate creativity that Phandom people throw into their content and like, nearly every day I see something new cross my dash that just slaps me across the face.

Also a ton of my closest, long-time friends are people I met through the Danny Phantom fandom way back in the day. As I'm typing this I'm watching Discord notifications pop up from the author of Lab Rat talking about her fish tank, all very full circle!

So here I am, bored out of my mind at work, and my brain travels across the ether of zoning out...

And a Crossover idea stuck!

So, do you Phans remember that animated movie that came out in 2009 called "Astroboy"?

[I mean this one.]

It was my first contact with the Astro Boy series and while I never explored the latter further, the movie amazed me and made me care (read: fear, empathize and ache) for the protagonist in ways that any other movie couldn't along with the first "How to Train your Dragon". (That's an accomplishment since after reading/watching many things I unfortunately became somewhat desensitized to plots in general. (╥﹏╥))

That being said, let's get back to the topic:

You all know how the movie premise is that Astro is the robotic replica of Toby, the professor's dead son?

What if we spin a bit of Phandom in it? <(꒪꒳꒪)>

There could be three ways to do this:

The first two have more or less the same trope = (post-movie) Natural Portal Shenanigans make either Danny or Astro cross dimension and Astro has Toby's ghost following him along for fun and only Danny can see him because he's an halfa.

The third take is the Fusion AU =

Danny as Toby dies in the same canonical accident, but the two cores instead of blue and red are green and pink/magenta ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

Phantom as Astro. In this Danny and Phantom are two different persons, but instead of "normal" superpowers/weapons, he's half-robot/half-ectoplasm entity (it's different than being a ghost, I still stan that ghosts are the post-mortem manifestation of the deceased's soul and you can pry this from my specter's cold hands) (Meaning: Phantom is not Danny's ghost in this).

Jack and Maddie as Dr. Tenma. They form an amazing team and something so trivial as an absentee single parent in Astro Boy canon won't stop me.

Frostbite as Dr. Elefun. I contemplated briefly Clockwork for this part, but the "supportive wise mentor" fit better with our favorite Yeti than with our cryptid stopwatch, not counting that he has already medical and technological knowledge in DP.

Jazz as Orrin (the robot housekeeper)? This one doesn't fit as well as the rest of the cast, so maybe there's no Jazz or she's in another city as studying-abroad-big-sister.

Sam as Cora. Rebellious girl with wealthy parents, who fights for her rights? Sign her in. (Not counting the teased romance between her and Astro/Phantom, that's only a plus.)

Tucker as "himself" (AKA not any particular role, just one of the orphans of the Surface). Techno-Geek that repairs robots for the Robot Fights and bonds spectacularly with Phantom.

Dani as ZOG. I know it's strange, but hear me out: ZOG was revived by Astro's core and it still keeps part of that energy, making it virtually both Astro's sibling and child! Ring a bell? Plus ZOG is a little shit when it's able to, so it's only a natural decision, really! (≧∇≦)

Cujo as Trashcan. Yep, the trashcan dog deserves the puppy counterpart.

Now that should be everyone! ...Or should it? Oh! Right! The Villains:

Freakshow as Hamegg. Who would be a better showman/ringleader than the insane circus owner who controls robots ghosts?

Vlad Masters as President Stone. Of course it was going to be him. Old friend of the protagonist's father? Check. Power hungry? Check. Wants the protagonist for one of his machinations? Triple check.

Plasmius as Peacekeeper. Pink/Magenta core explained! Who would have thought about that? (≧∇≦)

Skulker as General Heckler. Vlad's second in command and enforcer of his commands, it feels only natural.

There are so many other characters to assign, though at the moment I can't come up with what to do with the robot trio of the Robot Revolutionary Front or Valerie Gray, but this discourse made me want to re-watch the movie, so I'll probably add something tomorrow.

What do you Phans think? Is this worth considering for Danuary? (≧∇≦)

same anon as before and like. idk i just feel like the phannies here on tumblr are holding onto dnp more out of nostalgia than genuine entertainment and i get it, i did too, but at some point you gotta let a dead thing go... dnpg hasn't posted in what? 3 years? 4? dan posts once a year and the projects aren't good enough to justify it (no shade! they would be ok for a video that takes a month to make, but not a year). i just wish ppl would switch fandoms cause tbh talent is being wasted. amazing fics don't get half the interaction a shitty fic in another fandom would, AMAZING art gets 20-30 notes, I've *seen* a lot of it with my own 2 eyes and it just makes me sad for the people that are left. Personally I'm having so much more fun since i switched fandoms, my fics are doing better than ever, idk man. it makes me mad that dan and phil somehow still have those people that create for them, few as they are, without putting out much of anything. anyway sorry if my initial anon came off as aggressive, it's just a sensitive topic for me ig since i was heavily involved in the phandom for over 5 years lol

No don’t worry I think a lot of us are very passionate.

Idk for me and what I create be it art gifs other creative things. I don’t really care about how many people see it. If it only gets 90 notes which is pretty average that’s cool with me. I feel like that’s where a lot of people are now that still make fanworks. It’s not really for the interaction but because it’s fun and enjoyed with a small group of friends

I do think tumblr is holding on a bit stronger but I also think that’s mainly because it’s easier to find things here.

Tbh I have joined some other fandoms but I have other places I post non dnp things so if I joined another fandom people might not notice

What was it like being a phan in the day? Nowadays there's so much to do in the phandom, online roleplaying, fanfiction etc. So what did phans do before the internet was widely popular?

Ooh, good question (and sorry for taking so long to log in and answer, and if my answer is very rambling, as my brain still isn’t working right).

...And my internet went down in the middle of this reply, so it’s twice as rambling as the first version I typed up...

For me it was a mix between pre-internet, and early internet. My first year or two of being obsessed with Phantom, I literally didn’t know other phans existed, so my fandom activities were about tracking down any information or version of Phantom I could, which pre-internet wasn’t easy. The novel wasn’t even in most bookstores! I eventually found another phan via penpal adverts, then met someone else at the theatre. In many ways, starting a fan club was just my way of finding other fans to connect with. I know a lot of people got penfriends via phanzine ads too, so I think a certain amount of phandom happened in people connecting and enthusing together one on one in letters. It was truly an amazing feeling back then, even to discover other people who loved Phantom, who cared about Erik, who had all these feelings I’d initially thoughts I was utterly alone in.

There were fanzines back before mine, most notably Phantom Notes in the US from the late 80s to early 90s, and people were publishing fanfic by mail back in the day too. It was just harder to find until you discovered such things existed, and a whole new world opened up. I wasn’t so much into fanfic, but there were a number of phanfic anthologies in the early 90s, mostly from people in the US. So once you’d discovered a fanzine, you could get into the fanfic scene, but you had to pay for fic, as whomever was publishing it had to pay for the photocopying and distribution. 

The early zines had a lot of discussion amongst fans, like the early email list and message boards, on all aspects of the show and story, but there wasn’t room for things like roleplaying, or the wider kinds of fandom creativity the internet enables today. Most obviously because with a quarterly newsletter, you were waiting months between seeing your letter published, and reading people’s responses. On the other hand, it did make every little thing way more exciting, as it was so much more time and work to track down!  

I think what phans did also depended how near a production we were, as the stage door was another area we could meet and hang out with other fans (and queuing for returns, when tickets were sold out). There were some get-togethers in the early days, often around anniversaries or fundraising events for Broadway Cares, sometimes including theatre tours. The second ever Phantom fan I met was someone I spotted during the intermission who had a Phantom tattoo, so of course I went and started talking to her (and she turned out to be on her 98th show!). 

The early internet days were similar, in that I pretty much connected immediately with the first few Phantom fans I met online - which where through the rec.arts.theatre.musicals newsgroup. I can actually remember the names or screennames of numerous fans I met back then, in about 1995. Then Karin W started the Phantom email list, and various of us most “online” phans spent a lot of time on the #phantom IRC channel (where we didn’t talk about Phantom much, it was more a social gathering space for people who were all phans, and it was a lot of fun though also had its times of fracturing into extreme drama, because we were young and internet etc). People also began publishing a lot more fanfic back then of course, as there were plenty of free webhosts. I don’t think the roleplaying really got going until later on in the internet era, although I think there were attempts at it earlier... Actually I used to get some pretty weird emails from people RPing as “the Phantom”, which I rolled my eyes at at the time, but I look back on it and realize they just wanted someone to RP with, and there weren’t really any forums for it at the time. 

This is an incredibly rambling and disorganized answer (thanks Jack Daniels). I suppose phandom for me back then came into a few areas... First was just my passion for Phantom/Erik, and searching every resource I could find for any information. Then there was actually seeing the show, the stage door experience, getting to talk to the cast and squee over my faves, as well as sometimes meeting other fans. But just as important was having people to write to about it all - initially penfriends, then a couple of people I met, then people subscribing to and writing letters to the fanzine. And the joy of uncovering information - discovering things like the links between Christine Daae’s story and Christina Nillson’s for the first time, for example, which is now well known but was thrillingly exciting 25 years ago. 

Okay, to go back to the original question, what did phans do before the internet was widely popular? Searched for information and thought we were alone in our love for Erik; gradually discovered others who shared our love, and wrote embarrassing teenage confessions to our penfriends, full of our sex fantasies about Erik and certain Phantom actors, causing us to have to get our letters back from them when we later mutually fell out; found or founded fanzines, sharing our views with more phans, and finding fanfic zines; um I think this entry is long enough now so I’m posting it.
